Parr is amazing and loves what she teaches! Attendance isn't technically mandatory, but some grade points do come from the lectures. There are a lot of different activities so that your grade won't solely depend on tests. There are also group tests (randomly assigned), but they aren't as bad as they seem (they actually boosted my grade).
Dr. Parr (Pucko) is a nice and enthusiastic person but as a professor she failed to teach her material in an objective way. Her test questions were confusing because she writes them based on made up scenarios and the reasoning behind choosing an answer is sometimes arguable. Compared to 1107, the material is a lot easier.
Pucko/Parr is a great lecturer but literally hardest class ever. I got an A in ochem and significantly struggled in this class. Her exams are super challenging, along with homework. People who do well in this class only because of their learning style. If you are a visual or kinetic learner, this class is not for you.
Shes so sweet and cares about her students but thats it. She teaches at a basic level, but the tests are so much harder. I was more worried about this class than ochem. She has a lot of homework assignments and quizzes thatll boost your grade. I only recommend her if you are ready to work.
Tests can be a bit difficult if you aren't a good test taker and don't read the questions carefully, otherwise a fairly straight forward and enjoyable class. Definitely glad I took her
Definitely an underrated professor. Her class really isn't that hard. Just go to every class, commit everything she says in lecture to memory, and you'll make an A.
Pucko(parr) is soo amazing!! She is such a great professor and makes lectures very interesting and fun. She does a good job helping us learn the material. Her tests are hard, so make sure you understand everything. There are extra things in class that help cushion your grade. Allows retaking tests for an average score. No cumulative final.
I think that Pucko is an awesome person and definitely knows what she's talking about, but her tests are unreasonably difficult. I feel as if she is testing us on her level of knowledge instead of ours, and it requires an incredible amount of attention to detail to do well in this course. She is not a bad choice, but be prepared to study a lot.
Pucko is great and makes her lectures interesting. Her tests are definitely on the harder side, so make sure to pay attention to the homework and SimBio. The group projects, homework, TopHat, and SimBio will help your grade. She lets you retake some exams at the end of semester, so that's a plus.
While attendance is not technically mandatory, you have to answer at least 90% of all Top Hat questions to get 100 for participation. She is a very sweet, caring professor. Very good at lecturing. The only slight I would give is that her tests will seem difficult because her lectures generally don't prepare you for the test. Easily the best option.
She's a really good lecturer. 4 tests (not cumulative). Other grades to help your grade if you put in the work.
I loved her! She loved what she was teaching, and she truly cared about the students. Study hard for the tests!
First, Dr. Parr also goes by Carrie Pucko, and I recommend checking that page for more reviews. Secondly, this class is difficult (even though an A is achievable), and at times, I questioned if the extra assignments were helping. The indv. tests are difficult because of made up scenarios in which you don't know what to take into consideration.
Professor Pucko/Parr's class was overall doable. The tests and quizzes were tricky, but there were a lot of other factors that go into your grade. If you attend office hours and ask questions in class enough so that she knows who you are, she is more willing to help. Her lectures were very interesting and I learned a lot in the class.
This class was enjoyable, but it requires a lot of work to be put in. As a non pre-med it was a huge time commitment. With work, you can easily get an A. Tests are worded very strangely, and your grade is composed of so many different things. We had to transition to online, and it was super difficult because our work tripled. She's very caring!
Because of COVID, we only have one mandatory live zoom class a week and the rest of the days are taught through videos. She seems to really love the content she teaches and is always available in office hours. Tests and review quizzes can be a little tricky, but they are doable if you really think it through. Tests were open note this semester.
So nice and caring and makes the material interesting. One zoom class a week, the rest are lecture videos that you have to complete by the next zoom class. Its not really a big time commitment like other people are saying, just keep up w the lectures and take good notes. The tests/ quizzes are very fair. She makes an A easy, but earned.
The tests are extremely difficult compared to tests I've had in biochem, ochem, etc. The questions are mainly situational and are never like anything you've seen before. The homework and quizzes are extremely easy compared to the tests so its hard to prepare for it. She's very nice but I would not recommend taking her...
Tests were not very well written. Part of the test is a group test and the other part is individual. She tells you that the group prepares you for the individual in terms of difficulty, but individual is significantly harder. Workload became nearly unbearable when we went online. Good lecturer though and very interested in the topic/class
Dr. Pucko was a really nice professor and the class was easy during COVID because all of the exams were open note. Only downfall is that there is a TON of homework. If the tests weren't open note I would imagine this class would've been much harder because of the sheer amount of content.
I loved Dr. Parr, not sure what people dislike. If you actually enjoy biology, her class will be fine. She is passionate and discusses a lot of interesting information. The class is definitely time consuming, but I found myself enjoying it most of the time. The quizzes and tests are difficult, so actively review and use her strategies to study.
Professor Parr is a great choice for any bio class at UGA. She is passionate about her job and made biology interesting. Her class is time consuming though (I had her during COVID so we had two or three 20-40 minute lectures twice a week in addition to class). Tests and quizzes are difficult too. If you put in the work you should be fine though.
professor parr is a nice teacher, but she takes forever to post lecture videos and grade assignments. and we had to do and outside presentation during a tornado watch so that wasn't cool. great prof in nice weather though!
The test and quizzes can be hard but Dr. Parr is a very passionate lecture which makes me want to go to class. You can tell she is an amazing person and that translates into her teaching
Pucko is very enthusiastic and honestly her personality reminds me of a middle school teacher. She obviously cares and is super passionate. I enjoy her class. However, shes not that accessible outside of class and her lectures are all over the place. Its really hard to make connections between test material. Weekly quizzes hard for no reason.
She honestly cares so much about Biology in general and it's clear she cares about teaching. You have to go to class and pay attention to lectures if you want to pass, but honestly that's about it. Take notes and review them and you should be fine. Lectures are also interesting and she's a funny enthusiastic person. Honestly a great professor!
Overall Dr. Parr is a really great professor. You can tell she really cares and is actually interested in teaching biology. You don't have to worry about reading the textbook in class she actually teaches. The tests can be tricky so paying attention in class is a must.
Overall good professor. Online weekly quizzes can be a little tricky with wording. Very lecture heavy so you have to take good notes every class. Tests are on the easier side, so if you take good notes and do a decent bit of studying it is not too difficult to get an A. The best way to do well in her class is to really pay attention during lecture.
Dr. Pucko was a solid professor, while her online quizzes were somewhat tricky they are good applications of what you learn in class so going to class is KEY. If you want to succeed in this class going to class and going to office hours Is the secret. Tests aren't terrible if you study and go over your content. Final project and retakes offered.
I did not like Dr. Parr as she seemed unprofessional and disconnected from her students. She made her class hard for a general biology class- you would be taught high school content but quizzed on a college level. She made me very frustrated as she NEVER answered emails. When she taught, she would teach in a zig-zag manner which was hard to follow.
Her lectures were never taught in chronological order, it felt almost as if she hit shuffle on her slides before she presented. She was not transparent with her students that stayed after for help and rather dismissed their concerns. She felt rather unprofessional, but if you never are one-on-one with her, you won't find an issue. - average teacher
Pucko was a great lecturer, however, she was hard to approach and tended to seem passive aggressive when I asked questions in her office hours. Her slides and exam review guides are extremely unorganized, but she's very passionate about what she teaches. If you struggled in 1107, this class will be much easier, but you still have to put the work in
She seems nice, but is completely inaccessible outside of class if you cannot attend office hours. I found her lectures disorganized, which is especially frustrating when she wants us to piece it all together to see the "big picture." Her slides are also very vague and she goes through them quickly during class (does not post them before either).
I really enjoyed her lectures and the content was interesting to me. The tests were not terrible, but some of the questions were worded really weird. You NEED to come to class and listen to the lectures if you want to do well. lectures are super unorganized. everything is all over the place.
This class with Dr. Parr is not difficult at all, and she does a good job of presenting the content. She sometimes seems a little disorganized, but it never really causes a huge issue in class. Just don't skip any of the online assignments and study for the exams and you can get an A.
Ms. Pucko lectures like a hamster that did crack. Don't get me wrong, she's a super nice person, but she rarely has a complete thought in lecture and instead goes in 17 different directions, making the tests incredibly difficult to know the material. She isn't a bad teacher, but she is certainly not my favorite.
Pucko made class interesting but had a habit of veering off-topic. Weekly quizzes were moderately easy but required critical thinking. Instead of memorizing material, she made it so we had to apply it to real-world situations on quiz/exam questions, which was very helpful! I attended class every day and averaged a B on exams. Much easier than 1107!
She seems really invested in her lectures, but they can be all over the place and very hard to track. Also, her lecture slides have questions in them but don't have the answers, so if you happen to miss the answer or miss class, you won't have the answers which are not useful for studying. If you're more of a visual learner, do not take her.
The only negative thing about this class is the amount of busywork she assigns. It can get pretty annoying and usually is not too helpful for the tests. However, she is very nice and her lectures are very interesting. DO NOT SKIP THE LECTURES. She gives little quizzes that can benefit or harm your grade during class.
Listen, she's a great person. Super nice and clearly knows a lot about biology. She's always willing to help, BUT. But, DO NOT take her if you are unorganized. Because she clearly isn't. Her lectures are like trying to follow a crash course video on 2x playback while high. Be aware that Pucko is like the granddaughter of chaos.
She's a sweet person but heavily unorganized. I spent the majority of that class rearranging my notes, so they made sense. Her exams are 50% of your grade, so study. She offers retakes as finals, though. Also, study up on chemistry because she loves testing on it even though it's not a prerequisite. Honestly, get a different prof.
I recommend taking Dr. Pucko's class, but if you do, don't miss lectures (if you can help it). She is very lecture heavy and her powerpoints can be confusing without context. However, overall, she is a good teacher. She gives clear expectations of what she wants us to know for exams. She is very accessible after class if you ever have questions.
Dr. Pucko is definitely knowledgeable about biology, but is quite unorganized when instructing. The way the class is structured, paired with the 50 slides that she goes through each class makes this course harder than it should be. There's lots of opportunities to boost your grade at the end of the semester, though.
Dr. Pucko was a very nice professor. She cares about her students and was always open to answer questions. Beware- this course is very lecture based so I would recommend going to each class. Her lectures can be very disorganized sometimes and it's hard to connect topics but other than that, she was great. If you took Armstrong 1107, take her!
She is super nice. I recommend going to lectures for in class questions and just because everything is based off of them. She gives lots of opportunities for grade boosts at the end of the year and is super understanding.
She's such a fun professor! Does in-class activities for grades on random days so skipping is strongly discouraged. Tests are easy if you pay attention in class and study. Lots of opportunities to bring your grade up as well. Clearly very passionate about bio and her students doing well. Love her!
Pucko was an amazing professor and taught me a lot. Easy A for a science class. Take her.
She is lovely and bubbly in class but I feel like she's secretly a supervillain or something. She is a super sweet person! She's fun though I liked her I would take her class again
very nice person but lectures don't match difficulty of tests. if you miss a class and don't have someone to get notes from, good luck because lecture slides have no info on them. she'll focus on something for 3 days and it will hardly be on the exam and vise versa. in class questions happen often so don't skip.
I have mixed feelings about Pucko. Her tests would test something she would lecture in class and her slides were mainly just pictures, so going to class and listening to her was a must. However, she is a super fun professor and her units are really interesting. She ties biology into topics that are intriguing to learn about. I would take her again!
Isn't really a bad teacher, but sometimes seemed like she was annoyed when you ask her questions to get help in her office hours. Her tests can be really wordy and hard to understand, but she does retakes for the final. Her grade scale is 50/50 so assignments balance out the test grades if you do well. Overall not too bad
Overall not bad. Lectures are difficult to follow at times and she goes fast. Does in class participation points so even though class is not "mandatory", you still have to go to help your grade. Group project at the end of the year, kind of dumb for a giant lecture class. Harder than it should be.
she was such a fun professor and she kept the class engaged w/ whiteboard activities and her high energy. she does occasionally do in-class quizzes (for completion) and is pretty good at explaining some complicated topics so i suggest going to classes. there's weekly hw but it's all manageable. she's so fun to chit chat w, i really liked her
would not recommend, Lecture is very disorganized and heavy. Even during office hours, she is very passive-aggressive and seems unwilling to truly help you. She does give you extra credit and an opportunity to retake your exams for the final, but she averages them out, making it hard to even get an A in her class. Would not take her again.
Pucko was an okay professor. She was very disorganized, rushed through lectures, and came off passive aggressive in many situations. She also seemed frequently annoyed when you asked for help. She gave study guides for the tests days before which to me was too late. Tests aren't too bad, but they are difficult. I would go with another professor.
lectures were very disorganized, hard to understand notes and lectures if you don't go to class. she does a lot of in class questions on elc which are counted towards ur grade. in my opinion, the tests were very hard and i was never able to get above a B on an exam regardless of how much i studied. extra credit is offered
I personally do not believe that her lectures went in-depth enough on all of the test material, and a different professor would be best for the course. However, the final project was very easy to make an A on, which I did. She is caring and did provide me comfort and a private discussion about a bad test grade, so I will at least give her that.
Dr. Pucko's class isn't easy because it's not meant to be; she helps students grow in their understanding of biology by challenging them. If you keep up with the work, it shouldn't be a problem. The course load is entirely possible, and she makes class enjoyable with real-life case studies and a passion that's evident in everything she does.
I loved Pucko! She's super sweet and makes class enjoyable. The class is lecture and note heavy, but as long as you study them, the tests are super simple. Final exam is a group project. Explains everything throughly and lots of extra credit opportunities!
She is a great professor. Her lectures are very good and you learn most of class just by paying attention. However, her tests are so much harder than the other bio professor ( the other bio professor has a test and a group test which inflates grades) . On the other hand she gives tests retakes which is very beneficial if you messed up.
DO NOT TAKE! She is the only bio 1108 teacher that does not allow group test. Also test will take up 50% of your grade and the class average is usually low 70s.
Dr. Pucko made BIOL 1108 much harder than it was supposed to be. All her exams were extremely hard, and I felt like her lectures did not align with what we were tested on at all. Everything about her class was so difficult, and quizzes and exam retakes were all averaged out. Please avoid her at all cost. Take Barbs instead.
She was actually awful. Her lectures were so unorganized and her PowerPoints were confusing and hard to understand. I would avoid her at all costs. Definitely my least favorite class so far at UGA.
Dr. Pucko was sweet and really was excited to be there! She made a boring class interesting. There was no homework which was great but her tests were insanely difficult. Her lectures did not match the content on the tests and other professors make easier tests so you could probably get a higher grade. She did give a good amount of extra credit.
Attendance based on occasional in-class quizzes. She has a rly bubbly personality in class which makes it better but her presentations were slightly disorganized so it was hard to take notes sometimes. Offers lots of extra credit but if you study content her tests are not hard at all--consists of MCQ and short answer questions. One group project.
Her PowerPoints are impossible to understand due to how disorganized they are. I also could not tell you a single thing I learned from words she spoke. Good luck!
I'm a bio major and this was unnecessarily hard for me. Lots of people exceed but personally I did not know how to take her tests. Her tests require intense thinking, you have to do the specific and correlate it with something else. Her slides are disorganized and not useful for studying and there is a quiz every week. minimal extra credit.
She's a nice person, but you have to put in way more effort than the class is worth. It is almost impossible to get an A on the tests even if you study a ton. Her lectures are also super unorganized and that is the only material you are given to study off of. Definitely take a different professor if you can.
Dr. Pucko is very nice and outgoing but unorganized and hard to understand because she tends to talk in analogies. Attendance is taken by pop quizzes. Tests were SO hard, and she made up so many hypothetical, crazy situations on test questions. I put in a lot of effort and really understood, but I never did well on tests. Take someone else.
Pucko is a great lecturer. Her classes are engaging and actually interesting. She connects concepts well and it is nice to care abt what we are learning. However, this means that tests are very hard (especially the 1st two as you get used to how she words questions). Also unfair that the other professor apparently ahs all true/false tests.
Dr. Pucko teaches with a lot of enthusiasm! I always enjoyed hearing what she had lined up for the day. Readings and podcast assignments were super neat, too. Tests and quizzes were pretty easy if you review before them! I suggest taking hand-written notes to easily make diagrams and tables. I'm just sad I never met her cats at office hours :(
Pucko is very caring about her students. Her exams are HARD and very application based. Pop quizzes in class to determine attendance. Lots of homework (Simbio, weekly review quizzes, etc.). Be prepared to study hard, this is not an easy A. You have to work hard.
Tests are almost impossible. They're hard for no reason and do not have a good representation of what you learn in lecture. They are all application based. You have to study differently than other science classes for this class, and she doesn't really care to help much. Answers questions in one word or won't really work with you if you need help.
She is the best professor ever! This class is hard, but if you go to class and study, you should do fine. She is super helpful when you have questions and is always happy to explain something in a way that is easier to understand. She does talk very fast, so make sure to pay attention. Tests are multiple choice and short answer, but not terrible.
She's really nice, really wants you to learn. Lots of EC, weekly checks (2 drops), participation is key esp. w/ her in-class questions (able to miss 3-4 days worth), tests are easy topics, just worded and asked in a hard/confusing way sometimes. one group research project at the end. final exam are unit retakes averaged with original test score.
I had already taken AP Bio in highschool but didn't receive enough credit to skip this class, in my opinion this is much much easier than any AP class and didn't go into any real detail. Pucko herself was fine, lectures were okay and relatively clear but she wasn't a standout great professor.
Lectures are very disorganized and she is hard to get in touch with to discuss grades. The tests are difficult to study for and there is a lot of random information included in them. The class feels very random and rushed at times, especially at difficult concepts. She is still a nice person and tries to teach the information in a fun way.
pucko is kinda crazy but like in a good way ig? you really just have to put a good amount of work in to get the grade you want, i took it with CHEM 1212 and it wasn't too bad. however she can be a little weird with grading on tests but if you go to class and get good grades on the course work stuff you'll be fine. finale project is with group.
Pucko was the most engaging professor I have had. She made bio so interesting and cool to learn about- the class was based on a general understanding of concepts instead of just memorization. Go to class every day and take notes!!
I found it hard to study for her exams and felt the content was pretty disorganized. Look at speaker notes on slides, they help. She's a nice person and wants to make the class fun. If you go to class and do all the quizzes, your grade will be fine. Can retake exams during the final block for an average of the two grades. Group project at the end
Unorganized lectures and EXTREMELY hard tests for no reason. There's no reason her test score averages should be that low. The lectures are unorganized and don't even really cover the tests. Passionate about bio and kind person but bad at lectures and horrid tests. Also sometimes passive aggr. when kids ask questions??
She was incredibly passionate about her work, and knew what she was talking about. Tests were fair if you paid attention and took notes during class, and the material made a lot of sense. Her tangents were light hearted and related to the topic, she is a great professor. Only downside- she is slightly intimidating to talk to during office hours.
She is very passionate about bio which I love, but she is quite unorganized with her teaching. Need to study ahead of time because there is a lot of content, and paying attention in class makes a very big difference. Take notes because the slideshows aren't enough to base off of.
I loved Dr. Pucko as a professor! She's passionate about what she teaches and the content made this an interesting biology class. Although lecture is disorganized at times, I would recommend making concept maps, taking notes on the study guide throughly, AND OFFICE HOURS!!! The test class averages were usually around 80's and lots of extra credit!
She loves teaching and she wants to help her students! Go to her office hours! She gives plenty study material for tests so make sure you take advantage! She's passionate so you if you're into biology, she's a great professor!
People like to complain about this class but it is not bad at all. I would recommend downloading her presentations so you can read her speaker notes. They go super in depth. I studied the 2 days before each exam and my test average was a 96. Honestly if you just pay attention in class you shouldn't have to study much at all. Great professor.
Her class is great, she gives tons of extra credit and even does retakes on her exams instead of a final. She was a great professor, unfortunately sometimes the lectures went pretty fast so if you aren't paying attention you may get a little lost, but if you attend lectures and look over the speaker notes in her PowerPoints you will do great.
Take another professor if you can. She is very sweet but the tests are very confusing. Go to office hours and study after each lecture. Only thing that helped is retaking the exams (they're averaged with your original score). Again I highly suggest taking another professor.
She is the most disorganized professor I have ever had. Half of the time, the lectures made zero sense, and it was very unclear what she would take from the lectures and implement on the test. The tests were way too hard for what was explained in class, and it's a guessing game on what the answer would be. Take anyone else for an A.
She's definitely passionate about what she teaches, but her lectures are extremely chaotic and very boring. She hardly gives us actual notes. Instead, she asks a lot of questions and expects us to know it already. Her weekly quizzes and tests are difficult, and it's like she expects everyone to know Chem... I love bio, but I wouldn't recommend her.
She's the worst professor I've ever had! Everytime I have tried to ask questions she is VERY passive aggressive/never helps. Her slideshows make ZERO sense & her tests are nothing like what's in class. She never even finishes the slides in class so you end up needing to teach yourself half the material.
To say the least, I made a mistake selecting Dr. Pucko as my biology 1102 professor. For one is she passive aggressive when speaking with students. Secondly, the content is disorganized, and I have yet to feel prepared for an exam and perform well. The tests are worth so incredibly much, and the other millions of assignments pale in grade weight.
You have to work hard but she sets you up very well for success. :) She has lots of office hours and opportunities for you to receive help, if you need it.
Take Pucko if you like a lecture-heavy class. Be prepared to study hard for the exams; they are super difficult. Overall, a weekly review quiz once a week and a podcast quiz every once in a while. There's no final exam, just a group presentation worth as much as one exam. Be prepared to put in effort if you want an A.
Pucko is very nice but her lectures and slides are IMPOSSIBLE. If you miss a class, her slides make no sense and are mostly pictures. Her lectures never go as in depth as the test. Literally not even that hard of content, but it is not taught whatsoever. Do not take. Even if you pay attention in class, you will be lost.
Carolyn Pucko is the worst professor I have taken since I've been at uga, Her exams are so hard for no reason and are nothing like what she goes over in the class. She is very passive aggressive and she speaks to you like she does not care.Everyday I head to her class I hope one of the student athletes on the scooter will hit me.
do not take.
I don't understand why she has such bad ratings! Pucko is super approachable, I went to her office hours once a week and they were extremely helpful! Her tests are very hard, but so is every other biology class and her lectures are engaging and fun. If you want a class thats easy A and where you can skip then I wouldn't recommend her then.
Dr. Pucko has been one of the best professors I've taken UGA! The assignments (both inside and outside class) are not hard nor very time consuming. I recommend going to every lecture however if you aren't able to and need to learn the content through her PowerPoints DOWNLOAD THE POWERPOINT!She includes explainations of each slide in the slide notes
She really loves what she teaches and it shows. Her lectures are engaging and structured really well. The exams are deceivingly hard. In my experience I thought the content was easy, and then I studied a lot, but did mediocre on the exams. She does teach everything on the exams though and gives a lot of other grades so the exams don't tank you.
I WOULD RATHER SUFFER IN THE SAHARA DESSERT WITH NO LIMBS THAN TAKE THIS CLASS AGAIN to save yall some time and energy DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. she does not care about her students would just repeat the same thing at a very surface level to everyone. her exams are nothing like what she teaches in class and doesnt give partial credit. please live
While a very good and engaging teacher her tests can be a bit iffy. If you paid attention in class you should be able to get above an 80 on them easily, but some of her the questions were silly/convoluted. Additionally if you did bad on a test she offers end of year retests where she averages your first grade with your new grade in lieu of finals.
I took AP Bio and environmental science and this class was still difficult. The slides are unorganized and the lectures are all over the place. Downloading the slides to access the speaker notes and making a detailed quizlet was the key to doing well on the tests. Much harder than a Bio 2 class needs to be, had to study more for this than ochem.
AMAZING PROF! she genuinely loves what she teaches and it shows! you will actually have to study, but she offers good advice on how to study for her class and be successful. she genuinely wants you to succeed and is happy to answer questions in office hours. Study the practice problems and assignments she gives and you will do great!
