not a big fan AT ALL. very scattered and constantly changing due dates. will not take from her again.
She is always all over the place. Learn lots of irrelevant stuff from her. Stupid. Not a great class to take...
She did jump around quiet a bit but I found her to be extremely smart. Even though she does seem a little intimading she is helpful. Rememeber, she's still new and getting accustomed
Awful class - awful prof

She definitely is all over the place in the class and you have no idea what you are supposed to know BUT she gives you SO much choice on the final and midterms that you could write about anything and she is happy. She is very open minded which is great.
UNAPPROACHABLE, ALL OVER THE PLACE, MEAN, AND PUNISHES THE STUDENTS THAT COME TO CLASS FOR THE PEOPLE THAT SKIP OUT. SHES AN OVERALL MESS.
This woman needs to be on What not to wear...or something...she's never clear in her lectures...I would have learned more on my own...And I wouldn't be as confused!
This woman must be stopped. She teaches things that are flat-out untrue. Fudges timelines, grasps for meanings that arent there, yet then manages to still shoot down student ideas. Avoid her at all costs.
She is a great person and a great prof! If people would actually show up to class then there would be no problem in passing. If you have a problem you should go see her and she will explain fully and comprehensibly. She's one of the best profs teaching at Windsor.
I absolutely loved her class. I did not find her to jump around or to be unapproachable. She is very intelligent and I looked forward to her lectures because they drew me right in. GO SALE!!
Dr. Sale is a great prof who allows for class discussion. She gives very clear lectures and is very easy to talk to. She considers everyone's opionions, and is easy to listen to. Very intelligent and friendly as well!
shes a little full of herself and not always an easy marker, but she is a good prof and takes time to expain stuff properly. shes lenient about deadlines and is overall very interesting.
Fantastic Prof who doesn't see to care for the traditional english class, oh let me talk i love my own voice answer, very helpful during office hours and she'll bend over backwards to try and help you. Great Prof, all around.
The trick with her is that you have to write a paper that says exactly what she said in class, agree with her and you'll go far. I found her expecations hard to predict and the marking confusing with few explanations of why you got them.
Dr. Carolyn Sale is an unpredictable professor. She was very clear and effective at the beginning of the class, but by midterms I could not understand what she was saying: When asking for answers from students, she did not specify whose argement made sense, making the same affirmative sound for each student. This was the first class I ever dropped.
Terrible prof! She makes an easy class into something impossible to do well in unless you interpret plays exactly how she thinks! Favors the drama students in the class and often ignores the opinions of English students. Hated her with a passion!
she is not only unhelpful, when asking her a question she will proceed to give you the most ambiguous, unclear, disaster of an answer basically implying that "you should know this". In addition to this, she blatantly favours the drama students. Completely biased! if i go the rest of my life without seeing this woman again i will be happy.
Incredibly unpleasant prof'...unfriendly, unapproachable, and rude. Hands papers back in order of who has done the best, to who has done the worst (at least for our first paper). My advice is to stay far away for this prof' for Shakespeare! She's a smart woman, and she knows a lot about the subject matter, but she has a serious attitude problem!
Dr.Sale was the worst professor I have ever had in my university career. The conclusions she drew about the plays we studied seemed to come from nowhere for the most part, and she showed favourtism towards the drama majors. Check out the University of Windsors' page to see what her previous students thought of her.
Completely disagree with the other posters - I loved this prof! She is very intelligent, her interpretations are insightful, and her classes are well organized. Recognizes the strongest essays publicly, which I think is good encouragment though it may bother some.
I handed in a paper that had ALWAYS been an A or A+ paper! It was an A in my high school honors English course, it got an A in first-year writing, and it got an A++ from another professor last year, And she gave me a C!!! :(? I even added a bunch of new stuff from the Wikipedia, but she is impossible to impress! Boo!

She has her own marking scale because she thinks the university's isn't good enough, then translates her marks to theirs so your mark supposedly goes up.She was not very helpful and unsympathetic, though she really knows her Shakespeare. She has higher standards than most of my profs have ever had, even though the only prereq was junior english
I thought Dr. Sale was fantastic! True, she does have high expectations but they're certainly not unreasonable if you work hard. She is very apporachable and willing to help you with any issues you have. But if you expect to do well with high school level, wikipedia 'enhanced' BS papers, think again. Highly reccomend her though.
I really didn't mind her. I like English as it is, and I admit she expects quite a bit, but I did honestly learn to improve my writing and I haven't got my final grade yet, but she keeps assuring me it'll be an A. Enjoyable as far as a 100-level English goes.
Professor Sale is great. Even though she expected a lot and many internet assignments, she was always available for discussing the major paper and her comments were helpful. The final was more than fair and you knew the topic and could prepare for the essay. She was very interested in any bodies opinion on the text and was very pleasant.
I dont see why everyone is so hard up on her. She's a great prof, really nice and she discusses your assignments with you to help you improve your writing. I think she's pretty awesome and she has alot of class discussions on the texts studied... which is really helpful towards understanding the text. :D
Great prof. Always smiling, interesting, and very helpful. Expects alot, but is willing to help you enough to get you the marks you want. very approachable!
I dont understand all the mean comments on her. She's Super Nice and talks to you to help you improve your writing. She does alot of class discussions that is super helpful to understanding the texts. I would super recommend her. Her markings are hard but she's just so great that i forgive her for that.
She is a good professor. If you have an actual interest in English, you will like it. It was a little difficult to understand what she wants from you in terms of writing. She is also really harsh in her criticism. Do all the readings and take good notes.
Carolyn is so passionate about the course material and expects that you do the readings and participate in class discussions. Online discussion posts appear tedious, but if you have read the plays anyways, they are easy marks. She is personable and willing to help. One timed essay, one in-class debate, and a final.
Though Carolyn Sale is passionate about Shakespeare and clearly well educated on this subject she is very opinionated and has extremely high expectations. English is my favourite subject, and she managed to make it a miserable class for me. I would recommend NOT taking her class.
Do not take a class with this prof. Sure, she seems like a nice person, but being nice doesn't make you fit to teach. Expect more mandatory readings from her than all your other classes combined. Bizarre grading scheme. Possible to fail the term paper before even handing it in? Skip this prof unless you already write Hamlet fanfiction.
Avoid Professor Sale. She's intelligent, but she is patronizing and honestly, very very high on herself. Only class I've ever dropped after September but I couldn't handle a full year with her. She grasps at things that don't make sense in her discussions and you're left wondering where the hell that even came from. She made me feel very stupid.
Prof. Sale does not baby you. She is passionate and meticulous about the texts we discuss but wants you to ask questions. She WANTS you to participate and discuss. Even if what you say is a new though to her she writes it down because it interests her. She is very verbose in her assignment descriptions though, which can lead to confusion.
She designed the entire course on Hamlet. The course is called Case Studies in Research and she focused the entire course on Hamlet. This biggest waste of time and energy. She provides no criteria for papers and assignments, she takes weeks to respond to emails, she has pop-quizzes on readings from her 100 dollar books that are RECOMMENDED.
Professor Sale is patronizing and rude. Her lectures are confusing and she doesn't have realistic expectations for students. She assigns ridiculous amounts of homework and readings. Avoid taking her classes.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. She demands participation but constantly was rude to students and made people feel dumb. She adds extra assignments not on the syllabus and assigns way too many plays. Not to mention she sends out rude emails calling people out. She made me never want to go to class. I can't stress enough how bad she was.
If you're in her class, get ready to READ. You will have to read 20+ page articles and essays and entire sections from 1 or 2 very expensive books. The course is Case Studies in Research but she doesn't seem to realize that as it was almost exclusively on Hamlet. On the bright side, assignments and projects weren't as bad as they sounded.
Worst class I've ever taken, try to choose another ENG103 class if you can. Made everyone feel dumb with her feedback and felt insulting if you didn't agree with her. She does not prepare you correctly for the difficulty of her grading scheme.
You'll do well as long as you follow her feedback and agree with her ideas. Her expectations for assignments aren't very clear but her office hours are helpful. Before handing in assignments/essays, you can go to her office hours and she'll give you feedback which can help you get a higher grade!
Carolyn Sale is disrespectful and picks favourites heavily. Her office hours are pretty good. She made us read her own essays and recommended books that were extremely expensive yet somehow expected us to understand and know them. Avoid Carolyn at all costs, not a good class to take if you won't be her favourite (and it's not worth trying to be)
Professor Sale likes those who participates in class discussions and agrees with her ideas. She has certain expectations for her assignments and if you follow them, you'll do well! ALWAYS WRITE IN AN ACTIVE, PRESENT VOICE AND AVOID NOMINALIZATIONS!!!!!!!!!! she was an okay prof.
At first, I was intimidated by her. It seemed like she had favourites as what others said. She offers office hours so you can have a chance to talk with her about your essay before submitting it. She's going to give pieces of advice she's going to want to see in your paper (do it to get good marks). Know the importance of using an active voice!!!
Amazing course taught by a mediocre prof. She heavily picks favorites and has no grading criteria (gives you what she wants). She is good in office hours and provides good feedback on papers. She expects you to do heavy reading before every class from expensive books, and has lots of small assignments (not on the syllabus).
I have never had a prof with such high expectations for a 300lvl English class. Tons of assignments, lots of reading, and classes are mostly discussions. All of this would be ok if she weren't so condescending. Lectures are also hard to follow. I'd recommend her only if you were left without a choice.
Dr. Sale makes you work for it. There's lots of reading and assignments, but I can honestly say that her class has made me a better writer altogether. She has no clear grading criteria which is quite frustrating, but she is a very helpful person. Work hard, put effort into your work, don't hesitate to ask for help, and you'll get your desired grade
the worst professor I have ever had. For no apparent reason, Carolyn is incredibly rude to her students, patronizes them, and sends out class emails concerning specific individuals explaining why they are wrong/and what mistakes they made. She is so disrespectful. I can't imagine how somebody wakes up that grumpy everyday.
Very political. Just reword her views and feed them all back to her for an easy A. Be sure to let her know how brilliant she is as often as you can.
Worst prof. No social skills and completely lacks filter. Very rude and disrespectful, and doesn't entertain ideas or arguments that don't align with her own. Lectures are hard to follow. Students are called out and ridiculed in class, online, and via email. Her expectations are too high. She provides NO criteria and her feedback is gastly.
Lectures are incredibly hard to follow. Carolyn has little room for perspectives that are not aligned with her own, and will make it known that she does not think your ideas are good enough. Expectations are high in regards to essay content but Carolyn does not give clear instructions or enough time to complete the assignments to her standards.
I went to her for help and she was really nice and took time to explain everything I needed.
Dr. Sale is one of the toughest graders and least helpful teachers I've ever had. She will only give feedback if you schedule a meeting with her, where she will tear your writing apart line by line and offer almost no advice to make it better. She is also close-minded and will only entertain ideas in discussions that are similar to her own.
She is a terrible prof. Gives big assignments with little to no warning and they come almost one a week. She constantly reschedules office hours (up to three times), and doesnt make accommodations. She also makes use watch videos or productions that a graphic or potentially triggering without any warnings. Do not take a class with her
She is a passionate and knows about what she is teaching. However, I found her unprofessional and rude. I think she was trying to get students to drop her class. My first assignment, not my best work, got a very rude email without any constructive criticism. My second was better and she suddenly wanted to help. I dropped anyways, she seemed mean.
My initial impression of professor Sale was that she was a very harsh marker and a tough teacher. After a couple of assignments and meeting her for office hours I realized that she's only harsh because she wants her students to improve throughout the course as much as possible. She has definitely made me a better writer and learner.
I beg of you, do not take any class with her. It is not worth the credits. This semester consisted of many last-minute surprise assignments, passive derogatory statements in zoom meetings to students who had been scared to respond with their own interpretations of the text, and impossibly high standards. Zero respect for students or their wellbeing
Sale insisted on class participation even though she notoriously publicly degraded students' interpretations of the text. Her office hours were used to laugh at students' work. Essay feedback was just an excuse for her to dump criticism and puff up her ego. You will be deemed a terrible writer no matter how hard you try. Avoid at all costs.
bruh no one liked her at GFC, and no one likes her as ENGL prof LOL
She was a tough prof if you did not naturally excel in English. She graded tough and office hours were difficult to come by, often being pushed back (although this may have been due to the nature of 2020) If you are an English major genuinely looking to improve, she's not bad, but not recommended if you're just looking for English credits.
If you have the option, do not take her class at all costs.
I had a horrible experience with Sale with her marking and with her comments that have affected me greatly. She called me incompetent and essentially told me that I probably wouldn't pass the class. She is very harsh instead of constructive in her feedback and I did not enjoy her class after my first interaction with her. Very condescending.
Out of all the English courses I took at the UofA, Carolyn Sale’s was the worst. As a professor, she has no real teaching ability. On a personal level, she is incredibly rude and takes any opportunity to humiliate and ridicule her students. Don’t even think about having an opinion or interpretation that is different to hers. Steer clear.
While I have not finished this course yet, I can undoubtedly say that this is perhaps the WORST professor I have ever had. There are no clear marking guidelines, and her lectures are hard to follow, especially when she pulls up with 90+ slides for one class. I'd rather walk into traffic than take another class with her.
I had ENGL 215 with Carolyn Sale and I was in her class for a total of 2 days. She has a way of talking a lot without really saying anything, which make her lectures extremely confusing. Furthermore, after reading about the way she treats students I was scared to continue the course.
Avoid at all costs.
Just... don't. Criticism is great but to the point of telling you what SHE thinks about what you said and why you're wrong? Not so great. Prep to slug through extensive reading. Pop up assignments are frequent and last-minute, the "grace notes" for essays and formal assignments are constant and difficult. Never again will I do this to myself.
Sale is clearly very passionate about English Literature, but unfortunately her class lectures are quite dry/heavy and she is a tough marker. She also doesn't allow the use of technology in her class and requires students to purchase physical copies of the texts (and there are many), so if neither are optimal for you it's best to avoid. (ENGL215).
Her class gets easier as you go. She makes each assignment very similar which makes the course consistant and provides good feedback. I was initially worried about the comments about her on Rate My Prof but as long as you participate you will pass, and will likely get an A range grade. Also, a significant amount of the course is completion based.
Her comments were borderline insulting and her instructions contradicted her feedbacks. She had instructed us to write about OUR OWN TAKE ON A READING. Yet she had said my ideas were not the answers she was looking for. I had my friend re-read my essay afterwards and her feedback and was also confused by her contradictory. Would not recommend!
Feedback is insulting and unhelpful. If your ideas don't align with hers, she will make you feel bad about it and tell you you misunderstood or did not even read the text. Her class is not a safe space for new ideas. She is unwilling to help students. Do NOT take her class if you have any choice in the matter. Its a relief to be done with her class
Sale is a brutal professor. Her feedback is rude, and hurtful. She does not have a clear grading criteria. There is lots of texts to read and she is not clear on what will be provided and what is not. She is the harshest grader I have ever had. The class is all paper pencil, no electronics and in class essays you have about an hour to write.
Increasingly blunt/curt with students to point of being incredibly rude, even in the final exam. feedback on assignments directly contradicted instructions. Lectures were impossible to follow as she expected students to have pre-existing knowledge that she never introduced. I have never been so stressed out about a class.
nightmare of a class and worst prof I've ever had. extremely rude and gives horrible feedback. If your ideas don't align with hers you will not pass and she will belittle you. Lots of readings. Avoid this class and prof at all costs
I had prof sale for ENGL 215, i was in the class for a few weeks before dropping it. Her lectures are all over the place and very hard to follow. She has over complicated slide shows with dozens of slides and just flies through them. I was lost most times as she went on tangents not relating to any readings. She seemed very rude overall stay away!
Sale is the most brutal and awful professor I have ever had. I submitted an assignment that was supposed to be about my own opinion on Shakespeare and she sent me a scathing and rude email that said my ideas were UNHELPFUL! Very rude to some of her students and even to her fellow professors. I recommend staying far away from her classes
Professor Sale was awesome. I really don't understand the negative reviews. She gave meaningful feedback promptly for most assignments and was available outside of class. She also gave bonus points for most assignments and provided instructions and tons of help for the term paper and final essay. Take her class! You'll learn a lot.
Absolutely insane requirements for assignments - how on earth is someone supposed to write a GOOD 900+ word paper in an eighty minute class period? With no prompts before hand? Avoid.
This is easily one of the most frustrating courses I have ever taken. I wanted to learn about grammar, hamlet, and research. However- I was not prepared for how disorganized this course was. If you are not a fast writer or fast reviser do not take this course. If you want a course to teach you how to do reasearch and grammer- take a different 103.
I felt like I was behind on the first day. Her lectures are disorganized and messy, her slides are confusing, and she's an incredibly hard marker. She will point out everything negative about your work and leave you with a pile of criticism. It's very disheartening.
While the course was densely packed, the lectures were engaging and fostered meaningful class participation. She was always helpful and caring, and it was clear she genuinely wanted her students to succeed. The class followed an old-school approach—no computers—so all notes were taken by hand and supported by the text.
