Worst teacher I have ever taken. Doesnt know how to explain information, doesnt help students, everyone fails her course. STAY AWAY!!!

By far the absoulute worst teacher I have ever had. She should be banned from teaching any level for the rest of her life. She will tear your homework apart for the smallest mistakes possible. It is as if she is looking for some way to fail you. She has by far the worst explaniations ever.

Carolyn Shand-Hawkins was the worse math teacher I ever had. She was hard to fallow. Her assignment were either done her way or you completely wasted your time. I found that class impossible to pass, so I dropped. I'm not bad at math at all. She doesn't work with you at all. She is an awful. I feel terrible that I wasted my money on her class.

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE!!!!! not a difficult class, definitely below my level, but her grading is completely unfair. takes off points even if answer is correct if she doesn't like the format. (use improper fractions, its wrong if it is a mixed number). AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!

VERY HARD!! All of the work is done on an online program called ALEKS. The teacher does little to no explaining, as all learning is done online via ALEKS. Definetely don't take this teacher!!

AVOID at all costs. While she may know what she is talking about, she has no skill what-so-ever in explaining it to others. Also, she uses the Math XL program for homework, which takes a 35min assignment, and turns it into a overly complicated 3 hour ordeal. I was even warned against her by other professors, but due to scheduling had no choice.

BEWARE OF THE SHANDY. "Let me teach you how to do this, this way" nope not the way the MML shows. No time to teach a lesson because of a test? No problem, she'll just give you a handout with homework and a lot of video's to watch and expect you to figure it out. Totes not hot at all either which was a hardy killer...

This woman is the bane of my existence. She gives you the notes which is great. however the homework is COMPLETELY different and 10x harder than anything on the notes so your sitting there pulling you hair out spending 3+ hours on 20 problems. I cant stand this woman. Absolute worst teacher i have ever had.

By far the worst teacher i have ever had. She makes absolutely no sense. Her teaching methods are horrible. If you ask a question she will just say something completely random and disregard whatever you say. In my class if you have a C you are either a genius or very lucky. Her tests are absolutely ridiculous too and her reviews don't prepare you.

I will give you the best advice you have ever received at MSU. DROP THIS CLASS. She is awful. The class average on the tests is usually a D, and tests account for 85% of your grade. Her grading methods also make no sense whatsoever and she is extremely inconsistant. She also contradicts herself constantly and just confuses people.

This professor is one of the worse I've had. She is never prepared for class, and never does the problems before hand. So when we try and work out the problems together, she makes tons of mistakes, which confuses everyone. A teacher is suppose to be there to guide and help students, but she just confuses everyone. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.

Absolutely horrible! She blames the entire class getting bad grades on the class. She does not like for anybody to ever ask questions & always puts the hardest questions possible in the test. DO NOT recommend her at all. She never gets our scores in until weeks later & is not easy to work with. If you need help then don't think you get it from her.

This professor is not helpful in the slightest. From day one to present it is a class-wide agreement that she is on drugs or something. She's very eccentric and unlike any teacher I've ever had. You may ace the homework everyday, but by no means does you prepare you for the test. Professor not recommended.

HORRIBLE! She is not very helpful and is rude if you ask for help. She gave TONS of homework that doesn't even help with tests. The tests are incredibly hard and the final is torture. She doesn't know how to explain thibngs at all and goes too fast in lectures. Prepare for a quiz every day and be prepared for 4+ hours of homework a night. BEWARE!!

This lady has to be one of the worst teachers in the math department. She teaches extremely fast an I really dont think she teaches so students could understand the course. Its more like she is teaching just to meet the course schedule requirement. The homework she gives are 10x harder than the example which she shows in class. she is horrible!

There's tons of homework involved, and she's very scatter brained and hard to understand at times. If she offers study sessions before tests, go! She's so much clearer in them then she is in the actual class.

Honestly the worst professor I've ever had. Lectures were all over the place and she seemed constantly scatterbrained. I usually felt like I did well on the test but when I got them back I had failed every one. I ended the class with a 49% having done 95% of my homework. I just retook the class at a community college and got a 99%. AVOID AVOID

Worst class I have ever taken. Her tests are hard even if you study and you think you did everything right you didn't. Scatterbrained and usually gets questions wrong and will accuse you of doing something wrong when you are right. Not helpful do not for the sake of your gpa take her class.

She is not a good teacher, always confusing. I am pretty good at math and barely passing. She's always going way too fast and with the amount of people in my class that have dropped and these reviews, I'm confused how she is still employed.

Hawkins was all over the place during class and made it very hard to keep up. I definitely wouldn't take this class unless you have taken trig in high school.

This is the worst professor that I've had. So scatter-brained and never knows what she's doing. Forgets papers all the time and rarely finishes the lesson in class because she gets off topic too often. Bright side is that you don't have to show up for class (only because she FORGETS to take attendance every day) WOULD AVOID THIS PROFESSOR

I would not recommend Shand-Hawkins. She is very scatterbrained and unhelpful. She constantly forgets to bring hand-outs and assign homework which leads to her yelling at the class for "not reminding her." Lectures are very unorganized and confusing, so plan on just going home and teaching yourself... along with completing 4 hours of homework

Went in for help a couple different times and she did her best to help me. She makes the homework harder so we can understand simpler ideas when the test comes around but it was very stressful.

Worst math class I have ever taken. Im an all A student and I barely received a C in her class. When working problems out on the board she skips around and doesnt explain things well. She often made me and other students feel stupid when asking questions and she makes tons of mistakes that we have to correct her on. She shouldnt be allowed to teach

Carolyn is the worst professor I've had. I STRONGLY recommend you stay as far away from her as possible. She is so scatterbrained you leave the class more confused and you never know exactly what she is trying to teach. She also targets students and takes away points on tests and quizzes when she shouldn't have. STAY AWAY.

Shes very arrogant and God knows why because she has no teaching ability whatsoever. Her lectures are completely void of any structure, shes rarely prepared for class, shes rude to students who ask questions, and she grades unfairly without any rhyme or reason. Do your GPA a favor and avoid Ms. Shand-Hawkins class.

Pop quiz every week. Take home quiz every week. Homework due before every class. You have to read the book if you want to learn anything, because she's not good at explaining things. She'll go over a topic once then pop quiz you over it a week later. Kind of a condescending turd outside of class. You'll be depending on the bear claw for her class.

This class has been online all semester but she's making the final mandatory in person during the pandemic. Very scatter brained, blames students for not "catching her mistakes", and quite frankly barely teaches the class. Highly recommend finding a different professor to take this class with.

I highly recommend finding another professor! This one is all over the place, constantly makes mistakes on the material, and then relies on students to correct her. There is tons of homework that barely affects your grade. After being online all semester our final is written (25% of grade) and in person which doesn't make sense. Find someone else!!

She is one of the worst math teachers I have ever had. None of her teaching makes sense. She skips around a lot, constantly messes up working through problems, and gives you so much homework its hard to keep up (around 80 problems in 3 days). Rude when you email her. Tests are the only thing that matter. In person final?? after online all semester?

Terrible teacher and doesn't care about anything that happens to you outside of the class. Doesn't teach well and responds days after emailing her. Absolutely do not recommend taking a class if she is the teacher.

STUDENT ATHLETES DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!!!!!! Ms. Carolyn Shand-Hawkins is the most difficult and heartless Professor. She does not care about her students and has a terrible teaching method. The heaping load of assignments barely weigh anything, the tests weigh a STUPID amount and the final weighs 25% of your grade. Surprised shes not fired

There is ABSOLUTELY no way to pass the class if you skip. She was also not very helpful when I would go in to get help. NO chance at extra-credit opportunities. The class also requires the text book, but you will never use it. I had to drop the class to keep my scholarship. I ended up changing my major because of her. I absolutely don't recommend.

I still did not miss a single class period- got A's on all my quizzes. I've even taken this class before. I have all A's on a Pre-Med CMB track, and I still got a C-. Was horrified I got a 62% on my first test, just to speak to 6 other people and realize they scored lower. Lost full credit on a test for not showing my work (finding the y int). BS.

Take anyone but Shand-Hawkin.

This professor is awful. Her teaching style does not actually teach you anything. The class is test based, doing the homework and quizzes and getting As on them doesnt matter at all. if you do bad on the tests you will not pass the class. Worst professor ive had.

Skip class you'll be lost. TEST HEAVY. I did every single homework assignment and the homework did nothing for my grade. The test are hard, but if you study hard you can get a somewhat decent grade. Overall I would not recommend.

She does not teach. She takes all the lessons straight out of a textbook and just reads off the definitions of the math you will be doing. Does little to no example problems and honestly I question if she even knows what she is talking about herself. DO NOT TAKE THE CLASS!

Worst professor I have ever had. Took all advanced math classes in high school and ive honestly never been more lost in my life. She doesnt teach and the homework is nothing similar to what we do in class. Homework doesnt help ur grade at all even though there is homework twice a week and all 40+ questions with multiple parts.

She is heavy grader, no extra credit, no extra help. Doesn't actually teach just read of a paper and gives long homework after that look nothing like what we did in class. Taking her class has been so draining, if u are very smart with math concepts go for it but other than that she sets u up for failure by having 3 test 20%, and final 25%.

I had her for 136 and 137. She was the only professor available when I picked classes. She is a very tough grader and will take off points for your work even if you got the final answer correct. I think that goes to show she does not really care about our learning. I had an A in all my other classes and got a C in this class both semesters.

The worst professor at MSU. 3 tests = 60% of your grade, final = 25%. Her lectures are awful, she never explains how to solve the problem. You will have to read the textbook and teach yourself everything. Weekly paper quizzes have to be scanned and turned in on Blackboard. She is very condescending and not good at teaching. Would not recommend!

GRADES HARD!!!! Do not take this class if you are hesitant about math, or even if you're good at it.

Makes many mistakes. Will mark anything wrong demands that you show every little step like you are in elementary. Even straight A students have problems.

The notes did not line up the homework and I was learning how to do the assignment through my math lab. Everyday I went to that class and did the homework later I was constantly getting frustrated. She assigned a 45 question homework that had 4 parts to it and justified it even though it took 5 hours to do.

Just don't do it. Save yourself. Her notes do not match up to her lectures and quite frankly if a professor is teaching a note based lecture they should be somewhat the same. Content itself- not horrible. But, she is a horrifically bad professor and if anything can be done to avoid taking this class, I would recommend it!

I would not take another class with her. She is awful at teaching, at understanding or showing the slightest bit of empathy to anybody. She was not in her office half the times I tried utilizing her said "office hours". Makes a ton of mistakes, goes off on tangents VERY easily and just does not seem to understand the concept of saving papers.
