Sometimes boring, but you learn a lot.
interesting lectures; very willing to help with assignments; essays, but no exam
Treats teaching American History as more that just a job
Prof is clear, concise, understanding & interesting. Learned a LOT in this class
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!!
Shes very unclear and doesn't describe anything
She is wonderful and always very willing to help, love the class!!!!
She knows what she is talking about.
Tests are all lectures didn't have to open the book once
very excellent professor, extremely helpful and has cool name.
She is very nice and this is an excellent class!
Sometimes boring lectures, but otherwise a really great prof. with funny laugh.
she really knows what she's talking about, extremely nice, willing to help out
Test are difficult. She's a nice lady and willing to help her students.
nice lady willing to help out
Great class and great teacher!Class interesting and teacher is personal favorite
Very nice, knows her stuff, and laughs a lot
is a hard grader. I hated this class.
nice lady, helpfull, exams are tough!, fair grader, ask for help
she is great! you have to earn your grade, but it's worth the work!
If you're willing to work, she's willing to help.
Hard to follow lectures, tough papers
TAKE THIS CLASS CREDIT/NO CREDIT, OR IT WILL SCREW UP YOUR GPA! (I would know)
cute, great teacher, kinda tough, teaches while doing gymnastics stretches!!
Very nice, helpful. Goes VERY fast notes/lecture.Lots of help w/papers.
Very good Prof...funny laugh, but it always made me laugh! extremely helpful too
wonderful, helpful & the best part...she thinks group work is evil..take her
Very good prof! Knows her stuff and teaches it well.
nice, knowledgeable, and helpful. However, not an easy class
I LOVED this class! She made things fun and taught us so much not only about the class but about life as well
great teacher, extremely helpful! makes class fun!
Makes the class fun, but often tends to teach from her notes instead of from what she knows. She is still very intelligent, but makes it hard to understand/stay awake because she quotes from too many sources.
She is by far the best History Prof at GVSU. Extremely intelligent and helpful
very nice, loves what she is doing. good tests, grades fair on papers, has the cutest laugh!!! knows alot about history of medicine and makes it interesting as a theme class!
Really knows her stuff. MUST have concrete info in your papers. Loves chronological order... need to know it! Fell asleep in class almost everyday for a little while at least, but it was fairly interesting. Lots of reading, but I got by without doing it
Very nice and solid professor. Teaches in straightforward matter, likes discussion but not group work.
boo hissssss --- American Civ sucks
Took her Junior Seminar "Literary and Historical Explanations of Current Medical Controversies." It was very easy. You can get away with never doing any of the reading. Three papers. As long as you can write well, you'll do well in the class. LO
She is a very involved instructor with great knowledge to pass on to the students!
really fun, wierd accent, enjoyed the class and the accent
Such a nice lady! She is always willing to read papers before the due date and help correct any errors. She can be a tough grader, but if you follow her requirements and suggestions, you should be able to get an A. You'll learn a lot from her class!
Definately one of the Best GVSU has to offer. I mean, a masters and PhD from Yale? And she's at GVSU? She is really amazing, will do whatever it takes to help you succeed in the classes.
Interesting class, not my favorite though. She is a good prof knows her stuff. Pretty good lectures. An SWS class so papers and exams were tough. If you are taking this theme I reccommend the class.
Best hisory teacher Ive ever had. Highly recommend her. She makes the class even more interesting by comparing the past and present and using primary documents. Very helpful, she wants you to do well and is also understanding but fair. I would take her again but I am transfering.
Very good class, the first paper is a bit tricky though, and know your terms for the exams Class consists of 3 exams and 3 papers (3-5pgs)
Shes a great teacher, her laugh is so cute! Class is interesting she will dance for you, but the actual class work is hard. Your grade is based on 3 papers and 3 exams which tend to be hard and shes picky on the papers! So make sure you do good on them the first time but she does allow redos.
VERY good class, if you do the papers and study briefly for exams you should have no problem getting a "B". Interesting lectures and also helps out a lot with studying for exams.
Such a nice woman, very willing to help.Paper topics seem confusing so ask her to clarify. Tests were right off study guide, need to know dates for terms. tests were 5 chronology, 10 matching, 4 short essay, and 1 long essay. She is super nice and loves teaching. Take her for sure!!
A very genuine and kind professor. She cares about your success in her class, very approachable, will help you in any way she can so that you can understand. Must attend class, best if you do the readings. She lets you know what you need to know for exams. Very straightforward.
Very good prof! Provides very helpful comments on papers, extremely straightforward tests. Lectures are decent--tries to encourage class participation. The books could be a tad snappier, although the class gets more interesting as it goes on.
Very Terrible Prof. Not worth my time for a 200 level class. The class lectures are repetetive, boring, and she just reads off her notes in her mono toned voice. She expects perfect papers and you should not take her class. Worst class in all my years here at GVSU.
Prof Shapiro-Shapin is one of the best I have had at GVSU!! Great with the material and really into what she is talking about. Tests are pretty easy with extensive study guides!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! Would take her again if I could!!!
She is a wonderful and very interesting prof. Don't listen to the other ratings. Work load seems like a ton at first, but she spreads it out well and will help you anytime for anything at all. Great Lectures and fun to go to class TAKE HER YOULL LOVE HER
What an awesome professor! Of the fours years I've been at GVSU, she ranks in my top three picks for best prof. Interesting, approachable, and she she tells both sides of the story. How refreshing to have a politically unbias history class.
How is it she has no hotness ratings yet? This is one of the sweetest, most intelligent profs I've ever known. Helps anyone and everyone until her back looks ready to break, and lectures in an educated, humorous, and detailed style that indicates her own interest in the subject. Appropriate tests that she prepares you amply for. Seek her out! =)
The first day of class she said that we could do as well as we choose to...very true. She gives all the study guides w/ the syllabus and prepares you well for tests and papers. If you go to class and fill out review guides as you go, you will not have any problem doing well in her class. Her lectures are a little boring, but overall great prof!!
You gotta love a teacher who gives you more than one chance to rewrite papers to bring your grades up!

Gives multiple opportunities for rewrites, extra credit, and other things to help you understand the material. Covers material in understandable manner. Lots of reading, but isn't too difficult to get through. Definitely recommended.
I love prof. Shapiro-Shapin. She is my favorite professor of all time and has become somewhat of a mentor to me. I am going to take as many classes as possible with her. I would highly recommend her to anyone.
Professor Shapiro-Shapin is an amazing professor with a passion for teaching and helping her students. If you have any questions she is more than happy to help you. The class is interesting and the workload is spread out enough that you don't feel overwhelmed. She is a fair grader and is very clear about what she's looking for on tests and paper.
I loved Prof. Shapiro-Shapin. She was really laid back in class. There's a lot of reading, but most of it is pretty interesting stuff. She changes the books semester to semester because of student reactions to the books. Always willing to go the extra mile to help you with your papers (she even revised one of my papers on Turkey Day break). Take it
Shapiro-Shapin is one of the best. She reads from her notes, but as soon as she gets a break to discuss something, she proves exactly how brilliant she is. She is sensitive to the needs of her students, and she will help you as you need. In fact, she even requests to have students send papers to her or meet with her to discuss them! Take her!
Prof. S-S is pretty unique. I've never had a professor who gets excited to get drafts of your papers, but she does. I hate history AND medicine (man, I hated this class...), but she made the class endurable for me. Don't take her if you don't like reading, though, because there's a lot of it. Otherwise, she's fantastic.
I was not interested in this class prior to taking it, but I learned a lot in the end. This professor is by far the best professor I've had in college because she is very nice and will do so much to ensure a good grade in the class. She gives extra credit and you can write drafts to her before turning in your final paper. Recommended, great prof!!!
Textbook use is high. I never bought the main textbook, but I did have to buy the Kevin Fernlund reader, and the MLK/Malcolm X book for the 3 papers. Grading: 2 exams, 3 papers 5-7 pages each.
Really nice lady. All you have all semester is three papers and around four exams. Lets you redo papers too. Good class, sometimes drags. I suggest you take it.
Great professor. Very fun and helpful. Responds quickly to emails. Textbooks only needed to write 4 papers. No tests or quizzes.
Probably the best professor I've had at GV. Take her and you will not regret it. Keeps things interesting and is very helpful.
Here's what you need to know: You need the books and do the readings if you want a good grade. She grades the papers very tough. Let's you do re-writes of papers. Very helpful prof, understands problems of college students. Funny, although at times the subject matter is a bit boring. If you have to take the class, take it with her.
She is the most helpful professor I have EVER had at GV. She is willing to look at drafts for papers, have class discussions, and change deadlines if necessary. Quite a bit of reading, but that is normal for a History class. Lectures are interesting and books are quite interesting, especially for history. Great class to choose for a theme and SWS.
Love her! Really helpful as long as you ask, and sometimes even if you don't. Very understanding of everyday life, for example I was sick and she told me that she wanted me to keep my microbes to myself:-) Definitely recommend this professor, it was a class that I actually did not mind going to.
One of my FAVORITE professors at GV. She is very helpful and easy to understand. She loves what she teaches. I defi would take her for another class.
She's great and offers to review drafts for papers. I was very intimidated by dating such a high level history class, but she made it doable. Her exams can be difficult, but she allows a cheat sheet. She is also very understanding and willing to work with you if something comes up or you get sick. She's wonderful.
I highly recommend her. Her tests can be hard, but the cheat sheet is a huge help. Also gives a lot of small worksheets that boosts grade. She is very helpful and passionate about the subject. I highly recommend her!
One of the best profs I've ever had: one of the few profs who is an exceptionally talented teacher while also being extremely knowledgeable in her field. The class was interesting, engaging, and even fun. While it can be difficult, she's willing to go above and beyond to help students. Seriously, take any class with her and it'll be great.
Shapiro was definitely helpful if you asked but the lectures were the worst. She's not very exciting and I can't tell you how many people have fallen asleep in there. Plus the reading is a HEAVY load. And i mean at least 25-30 pages of the giant boring text book.
Great prof. Her lectures are a bit long but helpful.
She was easily my favorite professor so far. I hate history but she made it interesting. Although I honestly rarely listened to her lectures and I have not read any of the material she's given us, I have passed every test with at least a B, THEY ARE SO EASY. She's flexible with extra credit and let us turn in assignments late when sickabsent.
There is a lot of work involved in this class, however, if I had to opportunity to choose another professor I wouldn't have. She always makes her self available for her students, and proof reads papers before you turn them in to help you get a higher grade. As long as you study the tests aren't bad, but there is definitely a lot of reading!
This teacher was a great teacher that's all you need to know. Yes there is a lot of reading, but if you read the material that is assign and show up to lectures you are fine. The test you get a full sheet of paper front and back and she gives you what you need to study and its straight from the book! Shes always open to help and is there for you.
She really has a passion for history, and she shows it right away. She is very understanding when it comes to life and other things getting in the way of school work. This class has a large amount of reading and a very large amount of papers. She does grade the papers on the harsher side for a non SWS class.
This was a hard class for me, but it had nothing to do with the professor. This is why I probably found her grading tough. Very willing to help. Rewords you for hard work. Expect a lot of reading and writing.
Dr. CSS is so passionate about this class and it really shows. The work she assigns really helps you think about and understand the concepts. This class is a fair amount of work; it's definitely not a blow off class. She was always happy to answer questions and loves to see students who are also engaged in the lessons. It's a great class!
Dr. Shapiro-Shapin is a wonderful professor. She is one of the best that I have had here. Make no mistake this class will take up your time as there is a lot of readings and papers. It was a class I would be happy to take again if she teaches it
One of my favorite professors at GV. Definitely a lot of reading and essays, but she will accept essays and send feedback before they are due. It wasn't hard to do well if you are a decent writer. She also cancelled tests and pushed back due dates/assignments as needed and actually understands and cares about student's stress levels!
Great professor who cares about her students. She has taken classes at GVSU herself and always try's to be as understanding as possible. She dropped an assignment in the spirit of spring break!
Professor Shapiro-Shapin is a great professor who really cares about her students. She always gave feedback on papers and worksheets and truly loves the material she teaches. She's very approachable and loves to hear suggestions as to how she can improve the class. The tests aren't difficult as long as you study and do the readings. Take her!!
Passionate and informational but engaging lectures. If you put the effort into reading and paying attention in class youll learn a lot and get an A
Dr. Shapiro-Shapin is incredible. She is such a genuine person and is so passionate about what she teaches. She makes sure she does everything possible to help you succeed. Exams are open-note. She accepts drafts of EVERYTHING. Absolutely take this class with CSS!
I took her course as a freshman(HST 101), at the time she told me I could do better work than I was putting out. She changed my academic career for the rest of my time here at GVSU as a non history major. I took her again as an upper level student for this course. She still wants her students to succeed and a recommend her to anyone!
Dr. Shapiro is awesome! This class is low on writing for an SWS course. She does assign essays, but they are shot and she gives you a lot of guidance as to what she is looking for. No tests! Only 1 group project, which has very minimal work and only a 5 minute presentation for the entire group at the end. Overall, very easy and enjoyable class!!!
I absolutely loved professor Shapiro. She has by far been one of my favorite professors. She keeps things interesting with her quirky jokes but TRULY cares about your success in her class. I missed the entire first week of class due to medical reasons and she was beyond helpful in helping me get back on track. All you have to do is try your best!
I LOVE DR. CSS. She is hands down one of the best professors I have ever had at GV. She is a fair grader and always is there to provide feedback on work. The lectures are super interesting, especially if the subject interests you. No exams! Truly take her, you will not regret it!
This professor is the best professor I have had at Grand Valley by far. She not only cares about your grades she genuinely wants to get to know you as a person. By the 2nd or 3rd class she had everyone's name memorized. She makes class fun and engaging. We got to do fun activities that went along with the lesson as well. I definitely recommend her
The best professor I have ever had. She's a little dorky but she's funny, caring and loves her students and her job. She gives THE BEST feedback and as long as you try she's supportive of you!
She was awesome and understanding
Professor CSS is AMAZING. Take her if you can. Probably the best prof Ive had at GV. Unbelievably caring about her students and wants them to succeed. Puts so much thought into assignments and class structure. TAKE HER, YOU WONT REGRET IT
Professor Shapiro-Shapin has been a great prof! She focuses a lot of the work on readings that you do every week and she will help you better understand those reading in lecture. A lot of what's on the assignments and exams are in the readings so I think those are more important than the lectures, but her lectures are interesting so I would go!
The best prof I have had yet! If you can take her class do it! She goes out of her way to help you on EVERYTHING! I met with her the first week of my first semester in college and she talked to me and reassured me like I was family. She'll read drafts and give feed back for every paper you write. If you're sick and miss she'll check up on you!
Dr. Carolyn Shapiro-Shapin is one of the best professors I've taken at GVSU. She was more than willing to listen, give feedback, and accomodate the class schedule to help students. This was also the most organized online class I've ever taken, in terms of course content and expectations.
Carolyn is a wonderful professor and an even more wonderful person. She genuinely cares about her students and tries her best to accommodate for all types of students. She encourages students to pursue what they enjoy and find connections between class and their lives. I would HIGHLY recommend her for freshman in particular.
Professor Shapiro-Shapin is a very well respected scholar at GV. Scientific Revolution is a lot of reading and projects. Still not a bad class.
She was a nice professor and fairly fair grader, but I would say in the class (about immigration) she spent too much time talking about medical history (one of her focuses) and I think that took away from the class, to an extent. There's a lot of reading in her classes too, so only take them if you are interested in the subject material.
I LOVE Shapin! She genuinely cares about her students and will do anything to help. The class is heavy on reading but all the assignments are knowledge based (no real quizzes or exams). Gives great feedback on drafts and provides several ec options. A lovely person who I would take over and over, even if the class was hard! No regrets taking her!
This professor is by far one of the best professors at GVSU! She cares so deeply about her student's success. She also lets you submit drafts of essays and projects and gives amazing feedback! I honestly would take her for everything if I could!! :)
Professor Shapin is a very nice lady. She is understanding and very good at responses. Her class was extremely easy. She is very passionate about her topics. No exams, only papers, in which she will pre read before you turn them in. Many ways for extra credit as well.
Prof is a very nice lady who genuinely cares about her students inside and outside of the classroom. She is very passionate about the subjects she teaches, which makes the class more enjoyable.
Absolutely phenomenal professor, best I've ever had. A delight to be in her class. I hated history but she made me love it with how she taught and how excited she was about the content. I signed up for another class with her as soon as I could and plan to do independent research with her as well. Feels more like a friend than a professor
I cannot say enough good things about this professor! She genuinely cares about all of her students and is always willing to offer help. The class consists of readings and projects rather than tests, but she will read drafts of assignments before you turn them in. She gives thorough feedback and wants all of her students to be successful!
I don't dislike her as a person. She is caring, and will read the drafts of assignments before they are do. However, she will assign 50 pages of reading PER CLASS, for 3 classes a week. This is an ungodly amount of reading for any class, especially what is considered a 3 credit intro class. Additionally, all information is needed to do the exams.
Professor Shapiro-Shapin is such a kind woman and you can tell that she cares a lot about her students and her research. The one complaint I have is that there is a TON of heavy reading for the class that can be time-consuming and tedious, but most of the reading is genuinely interesting. She does choose-your-own adventure exams which was great.
10/10 professor. Easily the most caring professor I've had at GV. She will give incredible feedback on drafts and always make sure you get as many points as possible. There's a lot of reading but no exams, only a few worksheets and essays and she ALWAYS makes sure you know you can send her a proof before turning in the assignment. Take her!!!!!!!!!
The most caring professor EVER. Cares about her students! Very accommodating and is always willing to help. Provides clear expectations. Very passionate about what she teaches, and she is very funny. Only thing that I did not enjoy was how much reading there was, but the readings were important and useful to the material. 10/10 would take her again
Prof. CSS was very helpful. She will read through any of your paper drafts and answer any question that you have. Very understanding and helpful. Lots of work to be done, but I took this class in the spring, so it was shorten.
One of the most caring professors I've ever had. She genuinely cares about your education and you as a person. Lots of readings but many were very interesting and a basic understanding of them is all you need. Overall I really enjoyed her class and I would for sure take one of her classes again.
She genuinely cared about who you are as a person and when you would go to an office hour she liked to talk about your goals and she would care about what you said. She was very accommodating on essays and gave great feedback so you could edit drafts before submitting them. The class overall was interesting and the workload I felt was very duable.
CSS has been a great professor and creates opportunities to have essays read and edited before turn in. Has offered many opportunities for extra credit. No exams in this class "create your own adventures" to help show your proficiency can be essays or other small projects. She sets you up for success and will always provide thorough feedback.
This was one of my favorite classes of all time, I showed up to every class because I didn't want to miss a day. She really added to the course, she was very enthusiastic and sweet. There are kind of a lot of projects/ readings, but the assignments and the feedback from them helped me gain a better perspective about school work in general.
Overall, the class was a lot more reading than I initially thought it would be, along with expected material of to-do lists throughout the week without it being an SWS. However, the professor is very lenient with due dates and receives feedback well. She is always willing to work with students, inside and outside class on any assignment.
Professor Shapiro-Shapin is incredibly caring and passionate. The course is reading-heavy but engaging. Leverage tools like Unstuckstudy and the free textbook to ace the class.
Very caring prof, she accommodated me when I was struggling. Attendance is mandatory but also not. She is very understanding about absences. I didn't like the subject so I was bored but she gives out so many points and extra credit so it's easy to pass. I got Bs on a ton of assignments and still finished with an A.
I really love that she does not give traditional exams. However, that meant there was a TON of readings and projects. This class is an easy A with effort. Before submitting the assignments, you could have her revise it, so a 100% is basically guaranteed.
She's very adaptable to all types of learners and test takers. If you tell her you're missing class she will excuse your absence. Very kind and is very helpful with writings and assignments if you are confused.
