Nice enough professor for math. She is really concerned with student comprehension, and is willing to work with students who are struggling. Tests can be rather difficult, but if you study you should at least pass. She is kinda ditzy at times though.
Very enthusiastic about teaching. Her tests are very easy. Much easier than many of the other math teachers here.
Learned a bunch in the class. She was very helpful once I asked for help. Kinda hard to follow sometimes. Tests were varied as far as being hard or easy.
I've hated her since day 1, but she is very helpful. I don't like here teaching style or testing style mostly. she isn't very straight forward.
she'll be your cheerleader. enthusiastic about material in a way that kinda makes you wonder, but it works well because she never bores of what she teaches, so you don't fall asleep in class
She was an okay teacher. Had quite a lot of pep...a little too much for 9 in the morning, in my opinion. I found her class slightly difficult, but not terribly so. Nothing I couldn't handle.
quirky in a cool way
She is the most attractive female teacher on campus. Makes her own skirts and everything. Much too much caffeine but she is nice to get help from.
Loves math. I understood everything in class, I did the homework easily, I could handle the labs, but I bombed the tests (not sure what that means). I made a C.
Beyond helpful. Will sit down with you for any amount of time that it takes to bang out a proof (and it can take a while in 461!). Loves group work which is nice in this class. Also VERY peppy.
I really enjoyed having her as a teacher- she makes it fun and is energetic enough to keep you awake. Also will spend lots of time explaining and helping you if needed. Tests weren't that bad and has webwork and groupwork grades that factor into the grade
Dr. Yackel does love Math a lot; however, she just can't explain much of the material in Calc I or II. Try as she might, I cannot grasp her material. She tries to help in anyway she can, but her teaching style does not cater to all learning styles.
She's good, but not the best
Best Math teach I have ever had, and hardest A I ever made. But I know my stuff now. Definitely the best looking teacher at Mercer
I had her first FYS class, but she did a great job for her first time. Very Intelligent. Requires dailies, grades fairly on papers, and has an attendance policy. she will make you work hard for your grade, but it is worth it
Great calc 2 prof. Her tests make you think and apply principles in different ways. She's VERY energetic and perky and is always willing to sit down and help you out for as long as necessary.
Take notes and do the problems she assigns and the tests will be a piece of cake. Sometimes, when she is teaching, she is not that clear and it is hard to follow her. She can get confusing but she is helpful if you do not understand the material.
Very passionate and excited about the readings. Tough grading, but if you try hard, you'll be fine. Great lady. Her energy makes the class worth the time and work.
i had her for calc II. she is pretty funny and entertaining, but mark my words and do the work. study it a lot. i recommend staying on top of things in that particular class if you want a decent grade.
Grades somewhat harshly. Long essays, but you can pretty much pick the topics. The class was boring/frustrating as heck, but I don't know if that was her fault. Really nice and funny lady though. Cooks good lasaugna.
NEVER take her!!!!!!!!!!! too energetic and perky(especially at 8am) grades ruthlessly!! she is smart but can't teach worth anything! If you have any choice at all DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!!!!!
Her test are demanding. She'll give you constant word problems and they can be very challenging.I recommend if you are not strong in math do not take her.
Study study study! This is a booger of a class. It's a lot of work, and you can't slack off. If you are even a little weak in math, avoid this class. She is perky and often goes on tangents. As a person, she is very nice, though sometimes makes the class feel stupid when a simple question is asked. Those strong in math will not have a problem.
Great--very cheerful and clever. Nice lady, hard teacher, but made Calculus bearable at 8 AM. Gives alot, expects alot. Read the text on your own and don't expect her to explain everything because she doesn't seem to cater very well to various learning styles. Smile and be optimistic!
I couldn't stand her, I'm sure you've heard she's awful and never take her, HEED those words of wisdom! Her grading is whack, she sux, she's just plain awful. Hopefully she's on her way out, but that's probably not likely. Her office...what a mess! She's a mess! Don't take her, for anything, even if the school paid you ;).
She is very scatterbrained, i feel very lost in this class
As a person, she is very nice and somewhat helpful. As a professor, she's horrible. Her lectures are all over the place. She'll teach different topics from one calc 2 class to the next. You can go to class everyday and still miss something because she hadn't told the class. Also, she grades very, very hard. I would avoid her class.
I really don't understand what knitting has anything to do with math but it's easier than doing a bunch of homework. She's very happy to teach but can be somewhat overwhelming.
No textbook, no tests, no exam. You knit and do other pointless things that some how relate to math. And then you write essays about it. She can be very unorganized and scatter brained! Not your traditional math class by any means.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! If you have never had calculus DO NOT TAKE HER! If you have had calculus DO NOT TAKE HER! She CANNOT teach! She CAN'T teach! When the tests roll around..studying a month ahead doesnt even help & for the final she said "why would you study the old exams" ummm okay?! Please AVOID HER..SHE WILL RUIN YOUR GPA!!!!! I HATE HER!!!
I bet Dr. Yackel was a hippie. She is really out there. She's not a great teacher, but she's not terrible. If you show up and take notes, you'll at least pass. Webwork is hell. HELL! Her tests are often way too long, and impossible to finish. ESPECIALLY the final. 3 hours and not done, and I aced calc 1 and understood calc 2. Avoid her if possible.
math with knitting. horrible.
I'm starting to wonder if Mercer U. has ANY good Prof. I haven't had one yet. The work is very frustrating when it hasn't been properly clarified by instruction. I guess this is why they say you have to be smart to go to Mercer, you have to learn EVERYTHING on your own. Why are they even paying the Prof??? Hopefully I won't fail!!!
She only does one or maybe two examples a day and doesn't explain them very well in layman's terms. Her tests are set up as one or two questions each with half a dozen parts so if you don't understand one part you wont do well. You'll be fine if you are good at teaching yourself or know the material without her teaching.
Dr. Yackel is kind of crazy. Her class is very easy if you have a good math background, but she does not do a very good job at making the class understand the material. Her tests are easy if you know math and can learn the material really quickly. You can get by with not paying attention at all.
Class is HARD,but managable if you put REAL EFFORT.Lectures are unclear at times, but she tries to explain more when students dont understand.Lots of group homeworks every week.Tests are fairly hard and come in parts a,b,c.Do HW problems.Come to office hours and she will help.though intimidating @ first,I learned to like(love) her this semester :D
SHe is confusing as heck, her tests are kind-of hard, she doesnt give any partial credit, never grades on a curve, she likes to give attitude when you have a question, office hours dont help because she still makes no sense. I would never recommend her and i hope no one signs up for her...she is crazy!!!!
She is all over the place. When she teaches, she doesn't make any sense. I went to her office hours & I was even more confused. If you take her, you will have to teach yourself or find a tutor or use another professor. My suggestion is to stay as far away from her as you can. She does not know how to teach, & her test does not reflect her teaching.
Worst teacher imaginable. Cannot/Will not teach in a way for students to understand. I Have approx. a 60 in calc one and have taken differential equations at another university with ease. She will literally subtract from your mathematical ability. will end my life before i take her again.
If only this website wasn't so censored...I rather slit my throat than have to take another class with this woman. She makes Calc 1 way much harder than it should. Don't even waste your time going to SI or doing Webwork, because once you get to the test, you will still be surprised and confused. She does not grade every student's test the same.
I only had the choice of taking either her of Dr. Symington. I heard Symington was way to hard so I chose Yackel and I regretted it everyday this past semester! Yackel doesn't understand the concept of partial credit, and you cant do math without it! Avoid her if you can...
Honestly, she is not very good at explaining the material. You have to use the book to survive the class. But if you understand the stuff, youll likely come out with an A
The 3 lowest ranks on RateMyProfessor are Hard, Useless and Incomprehensible. Amazingly this describes this professor perfectly. I had an A in precalc going into her Calculus class and was forced to drop due to fears of actually failing. I was able to do the homework and quizzes with ease, but could never pass her poorly worded tests! DO NOT TAKE
DO NOT TAKE HER...The worst professor at Mercer. She will not help. I went to every class, tried to get help from her, went for help in the study lab...she gave me a 74 in participation. Failed the class. She loves to fail Seniors...Stay away I only wished I had know,
DO NOT TAKE HER. She is not a bad person at all, but her teaching skills are somewhat nonexistent. Went to every SI, easily answered webwork. I'm an engineer and Im really good at math, but her tests are completely different from what she teaches in class and has no idea what partial credit. AVOID HER.
Dr. Yackel is a great person but the class is very scattered and confusing. Nothing against her personality but I wouldn't sign up for another of her classes. If you do sign up for this class be prepared to get graded harder than most all other professors. She acts like math is the greatest thing on the planet but it just pushes people away.
Dr. Yackel is not very clear. Sometimes she will make sense, but rarely.
Really, really friendly, and good at in-class examples. Likes participation. Is a big math dork, and expects you to be too, but does focus to the lowest denominator.
She is all over the plae. Instead of Calc, I've learned about giraffes. Seriously.
Very rude when students ask questions relating to the class. Her tests are really hard and she doesn't post answers to the practice tests. She doesn't discuss what will be on the tests. Very sarcastic and rude. She changes due dates a lot and doesn't give notice. Sitting in her class is like being back in high school. Don't ever take her.
This professor is very willing to help her students, but only if the students come to her. Sometimes her teaching approach is a little off. She does expect to read from the book before class and the tests are somewhat difficult but nothing too hard. Take good notes in lecture and you will be fine.
she does not explain anything.
She gives a lot of examples so doing them as she is teaching will help you pass. You will most likely have to study to take the test but if you can do the problems in the book you'll do fine.
She is absolutely dreadful. Unless you are a math person and you have taken calculus before; DO NOT TAKE HER. You must have a decent understanding of all the major concepts in calc to even dream of passing. Her tests are extremely difficult and she's a very tough grader. Single handedly made me change my major.
My advice: avoid taking this course with her. The quizzes are super easy but the tests are something else. They get progressively worse throughout the semester.
She's always willing to help you if you don't understand something.
1) She just loves stats so much; it's funny. 2) With projects, she writes exactly what she wants/doesn't want. As long as you follow that, you should be fine. 3) She genuinely wants her students to understand the subject. She'll break down a topic beyond it's most basic level if that helps you.
Her tests include problems (with different numbers) from class so it isn't too hard, but they're ALL short answer. The entire test. Also, she does do the online stats homework but you can use notes and the book while you do it, and retake them to raise your grade. She doesn't grade the projects harshly at all either. Good luck!
Dr. Yackel is a great teacher, she gives really good lectures, although she can go a bit too fast at times. Her tests are somewhat difficult, but if you study what she goes over in class you will do well. She does grade fair, and you will get all of your graded work back; with helpful comments. She is also reachable outside of class.
The book was a better teacher than she was. Tests were not impossible, but you had to know calculus before taking the class in order to do well. She is very nice and accessible outside of class, but I never had a meeting with her that was helpful. There is absolutely no extra credit in her class.
Dr. Yackel is very particular with what she wants, but you really learn in her class. She is very clear with what she wants, and if you do that you're set. She is clearly very passionate about math, and loves to help students. I would recommend only buying the WebAssign, because you get the ebook of the textbook with and I never touched my book.
Dr. Yackel is a great person who wants her students to succeed, but she doesn't necessarily get her students there. I learned a lot from her, but more from my classmates who have already taken the class. Her grading is too much on tests. I had multiple tests where I had all the correct answers and problems worked out but received less than a B.
She is a good professor if you've taken Calc in high school. The people who didn't take calc in high school were struggling to keep up with her. She grades pretty tough as far as what terms she wants to see on the exam, but she will always tell you what statements and terms she wants you to use on the exams.
I never struggled with math until I took this class. She seems sweet, but she NEVER touches the book and every time I had a question the answer was always "You should be looking in the book." I never thought I'd cry after every test and quiz, but here I am. Do yourself a favor and don't take her.
Very fast. If you do not have a background with the material or learn fast, you will fail or struggle heavily. I took Calculus AB in high school and a lot of her teaching is done in her head and she assumes you know what she is talking about. However, she is very accessible outside of class so if you need help, go to her office hours.
If you haven't taken calculus 1 before, she can be very hard to follow at first. As the semester goes on she becomes much easier to understand, and she has very flexible office hours so she's always willing to help. She is a very tough grader on tests but just because she wants you to have a good foundation for future math classes
Dr. Yackel is a good professor if you are solid in math; however, she can be a little rude sometimes when answering questions that seem trivial to her. Also, for this class particularly, she made us teach the class to the peers; she taught about 10% of the classes this semester. She's not bad, but there are better teachers. 3.5/5
Her tests for the most part are fair but her grading will make it very hard to get the grade you want. Test feedback is non existent and to make matters worse you wont know your actual grade average until the semester is over. No extra credit is given so be aware of that. Take another professor if you have the chance. I can't stress that enough.
Professor is definitely not the best in lectures because she doesnt explain the topics thoroughly. She may seem sarcastic but is actually nice and not as rude as people say. Her test are graded very roughly, meaning you will not get credit even if you present the correct answer. I took AP Calculus senior year and this class was still very hard.
Do NOT take her class. That is the best advice I can give you. YOU WILL REGRET IT!
Dr. Yackel is such a sweetheart. She wants to see her students in this class succeed and she always asks what we need, especially when it comes to review for tests and when/how we turn in homework assignments. She doesn't give a lot of hw but make sure you do it or you won't pass her tests. a lot of her test material is like the homework :)
Dr. Yackel is always excited to teach algebra, and her enthusiasm really makes a positive difference. Tests are tough in part due to the high proportion of true false questions; don't go into this class expecting it to be easier than analysis. It is not. Dr. Yackel is more than willing to help out in any way she can.
I love Dr. Yackel as a person, but as a professor, she is pretty hard to follow. If you don't have a foundational understanding of statistics, I wouldn't recommend taking her as a professor. Her tests are extremely difficult, so be ready. The homework is worth a big percentage which is helpful. The projects are easy and will help boost your grade.
The reviews are TRUE! Yackel is really not the best professor in the Math department. If you have a lot of experience in Calculus, you MIGHT do fine. If not, then don't expect to learn anything because she assumes that you know everything about math. Take another teacher for math if possible.
Don't expect to learn much or to be able to ask questions. She will make you feel very dumb for asking questions because she assumes you should already know. Her tests are extremely hard...even if you think you are prepared, you aren't. The only upside is that her projects were an easy grade booster. I passed by watching youtube videos
So bad. Awful grading policy, gives tests about stuff you don't know. did fine, but be ready to work.
Dr. Yackel explained Calculus very well and was very accessible. There is a lot of webassign but it does not count that much toward your final grade and the tests are always easier problems, so if you do the homework, or at least try, you will pass the test. Go to class, take notes, and attempt webassing and you will get a B, and should get an A.
I think my schizophrenic dog could help me understand calc better
The teacher's lack of organization has made it quite challenging to prepare for exams. The review sheets often contain errors, and attending class doesn't seem to provide much assistance as the teacher appears to struggle with the subject matter. Exams are not on what we learn.
Horrible. Unstable grading criteria for tests, surprise weekly assignments due the next day, 2+ homeworks due per week, combined with her horrible teaching just leads to an incredibly bad experience. I know several people who've gotten 14 on exams because of not knowing her point weighing. If you could switch, RUN AWAY. PLEASE. 0/5
Dr. Yackel is mean in such a nice way. Her tests are very difficult and challenging and requires doing at least 100 practice problems before each exam. She also does not tell you how each type of problem is scored.
She gets a bad reputation because you cannot succeed by skipping class. My first semester at Mercer, I got an A on every test because I paid attention.
- Have a disability - Disability makes it hard for her to read my exams - Go to accommodations to make it easier for HER to read my exam - She grades me like I destroyed her life and i get a lower grade on a test she could read She is a lovely woman, but good god coming from someone who struggles in math it is so hard for me in this class.
RUN. RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN. If you have to take her class, go to the lectures or you will set yourself up for failure. She rushes through her lectures and isn't good at explaining the steps and expects us to understand right away. She assigns so much homework weekly and they are so much harder than the exams and quizes end up being.
