Very helpful outside of class.
She is wonderful about wanting to help her students, but like everyone has said above, her test are very tricky. Sometimes so tricky that she tricks herself. She will put you to sleep in lectures, but she is an incredibly nice lady who is like many other chemists and just isn't that great a teacher. She'll try to help you all day though.
If you have a solid foundation in mathematics (did decent in anything involving calculus) then her teaching style might be frustrating for you. She tends to spend the entire hour doing sample problem after sample problem and focusing more on the mathematics behind the problems than the chemistry concepts.
The class really isn't that bad. It's chemistry, it's supposed to be hard.
The monotone voice will put you to sleep. I did better on tests when I didn't go to class and taught myself the tests.
She has a wonderful personality, and I always enjoyed talking to her. Not the best teacher though. Her exams can be very hard. I never felt like I got a lot out of lecture. I more or less taught the material to myself.
i got a b- in the class. it helps if you read what she's going to teach before she goes over it because lecture will either clarify what you've already read, help you figure out whether to ignore her or not based on you're understanding of the reading, or go over your head. class will put you to sleep but go when you can to get random hints.
she's nice and wants to help, but she relies on powerpoint pictures to teach for her. class is mainly an hour and a half of example problems that never seemed to help, to do well: teach yourself concepts and go to her for practice probs. the tests are hard and she will try to be sneaky with them
She meant well, but overall I would NOT recommend taking her class. She was nice and sincere and wanted you to understand, but material was covered so quickly in class that it had to be learned on the student's own time. The tests were frustrating, however she did give partial credit. Her review sessions were a joke.
Very montone, ef. read the book for btter understanding. She is one of the nicest professors I have come in contact with at Carolina. She really knows what she is talking about but sometimes has a hard time explaining. If she gets to know your face you'll do better in th class, she favors kids she knows.
obviously intro chem is never going to be a fun class but she was very nice and clear with her teaching style. Her tests were generally straightforward and were never harder than the hardest book problem.
Really helpful if you are confused
Four tests which can be hard, drop lowest. Online webassigns (homework) each week.
She puts all of her powerpoints online with her notes from class on them. Drops a test grade. Don't underestimate webassign and don't let it be your learning experience. Know how to do the chemistry before you do the webassign because it's 10% of your course grade. It can cost you a letter grade if you aren't careful!
I hate chem but this woman made it as painless as possible. Webassigns are a pain but they're a good study tool and her tests are fair. The final was a piece of cake. She puts all her lectures online before and after she marks them up in class. I'd suggest printing them out before class and writing your notes on them.
Def thought I was going to fail her class. She drops the lowest grade on tests and webassigns. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. I managed a C but failed like all her exams. THe final was multiple choice which helped ALOT!!
Bad professor. Powerpoints were useless, you had to read and work all the problems in the book in order to a) do the webassign, and b) actually pass her test. She's quite a loser too (she makes a lot of lame jokes)
Very helpful teacher. People say she is monotone, but really she is pretty interesting and the nicest person ever. GO TO OFFICE HOURS!! She's very helpful and if you do poorly on a test and go see her she will everything she can to help you. Fair grading, tests were challenging but not impossible. Highly recommend.
This class was fairly painful and I had to spend a ridiculous amount of time studying to pull off an A. She cares and is somewhat helpful during office hours, but she isn't very clear during class and your grade doesn't end up reflecting what you know. You're better off with another teacher.
Lectures are pretty boring, but she is extremely helpful in her office hours. Webassigns are pretty challenging, but if you do well on the webassigns you should be fine on the tests. I suggest studying your webassigns before each test. Tests aren't too bad, but the time constraint makes things a little harder. Final exam is easier.
Professor Bliem is the best Chemistry professor I've had at UNC or anywhere. She actually teaches you concepts rather than relying completely on the book or someone else's powerpoints. For the first time at UNC I felt successful learning science rather than frustrated and confused. Definitely take her classes if you can.
BORING! Her monotone voice can put people with even the highest levels of ADHD into a coma. Powerpoints were useless resources for the tests. A huge waste of ink and paper printing all of those slides. Most help came from the book and doing problems.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER!!!! so helpful and nice- actually teaches the concepts and tests are totally fair and manageable if you study and work the book problems! web assigns are super helpful!
Consider carefully before enrolling in this professor's class. Unless you are considering taking a lot of upper level chemistry classes, this professor might not be for you. Also she wasn't very understanding when I couldn't make an exam due to an emergency room visit. Not easily accessible either.
Although she has a great personality, her teaching consists of doing practice problems in class. The powerpoints were useless and the MasteringChemistry is ridiculous since u only get to work on it on weekends and the tutoring center is only open on week days. shes very helpful during office hours but not everyone has time to go.
Nice Lady. Her powerpoints are long and she relies on working on problems in class. Her online MasteringChemistry assignments are brutal and assigned over the weekend which makes getting them finished extremely difficult. Her tests are very difficult, average was a 64 for the last test we took. You MUST read the book and do problems in the book
Terrible. Do all you can to avoid her as a professor. She does not care and does not prepare students well for her ridiculous tests.
While obviously a sweet lady, her teaching was hindered by the size of the class. She spent the time doing practice problems, which was useful for me personally but may not be for others. The MC assignments are tough but not impossible, and they're easier if you do the tutorials and read the section in the textbook. Office hours are helpful too!
I had never taken a chemistry class in my life. I found her class to be incredibly difficult. I never understood what she was teaching in class. She uses power points and does a few practice problems. Unfortunatley the practice problems are way easier than her tests which are ridiculous. I would not reccomend her.
Professor Bliem is an extremely nice lady. That being said, she teaches to the very lowest level and tests to the very highest level. I made the first B of my life in this course after putting in about 3 hours of studying chemistry a day. The tests in this course are OUT OF THIS WORLD. Also, homework is only available online on the weekends.
Professor Bliem is really nice and she is very organized with her lectures. That being said she only uses powerpoint but answers questions and is nice about the face that she is teaching such a hard class. This is not estimation on how hard her tests are. She tells you what you need to know but her wording is extremely tricky!
She does not prepare you for her crazy hard tests.... at all. You have to do a lot of work on your own. And the homework assignments are unnecessarily long and annoyingly repetitive
Dr. Bliem is a very sweet lady and a great professor. She teaches in an organized fashion and goes by the book which is helpful in studying. Her class (and tests) are hard but if you put in the effort she is always willing to help by explaining concepts and doing problems. Office hours are extremely helpful and I would highly recommend her.
If one were to read the textbook, do all the mastering chemistry, go to class, and do the majority of the textbook problems, the class is pretty manageable;)
Great Teacher. She teaches clearly and office hours helped a lot.
Really nice & wants to know you by name. Attendance is a must because she now has mini quizzes with clickers and problem solving questions which are a part of your grade. She also assigns Mastering Chem (online) which has the same level difficulty as her tests. She follows the flipped classroom method. So lots of studying on your own!
She is so nice and sometimes funny but her class is difficult simply because it's Chemistry & most people don't get Chemistry without putting in several hours of studying. She gives you the resources you need and makes your homework harder than the test on purpose. You can be successful in this class if you read, practice problems and attend class!
ATTEND CLASS! There is a daily quiz and problem solving that require a clicker & are a part of your grade. Tests can be difficult but manageable. It consist of multiple choice and open answer. You can drop lowest test. No regular office hours but problem solving hours. She's very nice and will know you by name if you take the effort to meet her.
Professor Bleim is WONDERFUL! She is 100% my favorite professor at Carolina. I can tell that her main priority is making sure that her students actually learn the material. Yes, the tests are hard but that's because it's CHEM 101 at UNC. If you put in the effort, an A-/B+ is definitely attainable.
Professor Bleim is very approachable and she likes to make corny jokes every once in a while, but her style of teaching is not for everyone.
I love prof bliem! She makes chemistry more enjoayble than I thought it would be and her tests are fair for the most part. She is also really funny, which is needed in a Chem class in my opinion.
Great as a person and very helpful. Answers her emails very fast. Her exams are hard and have few questions that take you forever to answer because of how difficult they are.
One of the best professors I've had at UNC. She is very energetic, charismatic, and funny! Her classes are very enjoyable. The exams are hard however, she does give you a lot of practice and she's always available in person and mostly by email. This is Biophysics people. Don't blame her on being hard, this class is hard with any professor.
Bliem was not my favorite. I prefer Krumper as a lecturer, even though their styles are the same. Bliem is very monotonous and dry, even during her office hours. She shows zero interest in her subject, which eventually trickles down to her students and their interest in the class. Overall, not satisfied, and would not recommend this teacher.
Professor Bliem is by far my favorite professor I've had at UNC. Her exams are challenging, and she will find ways to trick you, but she is very good at preparing you for future chemistry classes. She's funny and extremely approachable. She tries to know all of her students by name. 100% would recommend. Go to class for sure.
First off, I'm a dean's list student. It's a reversed classroom. If you can't teach yourself, do not take with this professor. The tests are tough, typically average about a 78, and she never curves.
I usually love chemistry, but the tests for this class were extremely hard, the lectures were extremely boring, and the homework was extremely long. There are mandatory homework assignments every weekend, including holiday weekends, that you can't do ahead of time. So be prepared to do a lot of work and little reward grade-wise.
Bliem was great this semester, although I do believe her teaching style isn't for everyone. You definitely have to learn things on your own, but she gives you the resources to do that. If thats not for you, Benton is the way to go! I struggled in her class at first but I went and spoke to her and she was very helpful and offered great advice!
The class requires some work, but it's not impossible. There is "daily work" you have to do before class everyday, like online warm ups, and there are clickers, so you have to go to class. Most of your grade is determined by the tests. You should go to at least a few TA review sessions because they offer helpful tips and tricks to make life easier.
Personally I thought she was a boring lecturer. Tests are more concept based unlike Professor Benton. Look to the mentors for help as Dr. Bliem can't and won't help all the hundreds of students she has.
Prof. B is awesome. If you go to her for help she will help you for sure. Like other chem classes, practice problems are a must. But if you don't plan on doing practice problems all of your life, go to mentor review session because they go over problems, sometimes problems from previous exams. Online homework also helps a ton, so take it seriously.
The averages for her 101 class for the second and third tests were a 68 (after a 10 point curve) and a 62. Expect to work if chemistry doesn't come naturally to you. She is nice but not super helpful
Professor Bliem is super nice and tries to help you, but it doesn't always work out. She gives you daily homework and assigns practice problems, which you should definitely; however, her tests are ten times harder than the homework she gives, so be prepared for that. I went to her office hours and did all the practice problems and wasn't successful
Dr. Bliem's tests were quite difficult, all free response, but overall fair, just gotta work for it. Her lectures can be a little unorganized and doesn't really follow the textbook, though she doesn't explain things well. Problem sets are hard, but good practice for the exams. Not a lot of practice for exams. Did curve the class to 85 A though.
Professor Bliem was very nice, but I felt very confused by a lot of her explanations, and she had a tendency to introduce concepts on the warmup quiz using the exceptions to the concepts; sound confusing? It was. The tests required a fair amount of studying, but sometimes the study materials provided did not align well with the test material.
She's a nice lady but a terrible teacher. If you do not do well in the flipped classroom style of learning, meaning you cannot teach yourself well, do not take her class. Most of what you learn is from teaching yourself problems and homework she assigns outside of class. Her tests are much more difficult than anything she ever teaches in class.
One of those 'wake up and welcome to college' professors. If you don't take the class seriously, your grade will reflect it. Go into every mid-term prepared and armed to the teeth with every single thing that has been mentioned in lecture and in the readings. Sapling and recommended problems help learning content as well. Don't be afraid to ask.
Professor Bliem has a flipped class, but she gives COUNTLESS resources to help. Office hours, extra recommended problems and helpful videos are abundant. FREE ONLINE TEXTBOOK! Homework is minimal, but VERY helpful. I spent 10-45 min MAX on homework. Attendance is mandatory and she has in class quizzes each day (3 ?'s each). Best CHEM101 class.
Bliem is a super cool person, but she's not the best teacher around. I never went to class, but to get daily points you have to go to class... so go to class. You have homework every day, and she reads straight off the powerpoint during lectures. Her tests are insanely hard, but if you study for two weeks beforehand, you'll be okay. Not the worst
It is totally possible to do well in Bliem's class, but you have to do your readings, homework, and come to class. Her tests are tough, but make you think critically about chemistry. Taking her again for 102 next semester. Avoid is you aren't willing to put in the work to get an A.
Clear lectures and homework, but tests are much more difficult than any other assigned material. Office hours and homework are a must. She is very helpful during her office hours, and they are often even more beneficial than the class. Read the textbook and do the recommended problems. Fair grader and wonderful teacher, but tests are difficult.
I personally think Professor Bliem is one of the best Chem professors at UNC. She does had a flipped classroom, which means you will have to get familiar with the material before coming to class. However, I think this is a very effective method. During class, she does a lot of practice problems and goes in depth for the important topics.
One of the most enthusiastic professor's I've had. This is not an easy class but if you put in the work you'll get a high grade. She has tons of resources for you and if you really try in the class you will get a good grade.
Bliem is a charismatic professor. I looked forward to her lectures, but I may be biased since I enjoy chemistry. She has a great sense of humor that she shows often, and her daily homework and quizzes are great learning aids. They're not busy work, and they help the material stay fresh in your mind.
Professor Bliem is a good person to take 101 or 102 with. The tests are difficult, but she gives you plenty of practice problems to work in class and out of class that are very beneficial. She's pretty cool too, so that helps
Dr. Bliem is the best! If you go to lecture, office hours, and do all the assigned work you will be fine! I studied all the time for this class, and the tests were still extremely difficult for me. You have to learn how to do the problems quickly. I loved the mentor review sessions as well. I loved this class, and I'm sure you all will too!
While Prof. Bliem is a good lecturer and can explain complicated topics, her class is really hard. I took her course over others because she assigns graded homework thinking this would help prepare me for tests, but I still struggled. They're full of trick questions and much more difficult than the practice exams. Luckily hw can bump up your grade.
Prof Bliem is VERY inflexible; beware that exams are taken separately from the main class and if you have a conflict, you WILL be forced into the 6:30 AM make up slot for 3 midterms, yes 6 AM in the morning
Prof Bliem is a great professor. She really cares about her students succeeding in her class. She does have a really monotone voice but is hilarious and going to class is fun and interesting. Clicker quizzes every day at the beginning of class, so you really can't skip. All the gen chem tests are standard, so now it's all about teaching style.
Professor Bliem is one of the best professors I've had at UNC. She's hilarious and really cares about her students. She is always willing to help students outside of class and if you put in the effort, so will she. I would absolutely recommend taking her class for 102. The standardization of the tests sucks, but there's no getting around that.
I love Bliem! I came from 101 with Pedersen and it helped me so much to have a professor that could actually lecture well. Attendance is REQUIRED because she's such a good lecturer. I never read the textbook but she was amazing at explaining things in class and always welcomed questions. She's an awesome professor, and I would recommend her.
Lovely teacher and very accessible! Gives plenty of resources to help students succeed!
Professor Bliem covers all of the material necessary for the exams. The exams for this class are fair and do not contain any surprises- if you do all of the practice problems and truly understand the material. She was overall a good professor that offered many practice problems during class and went over the reasoning behind the answer.
Meh. It's up to you to learn the material with this teacher. She'll help you in office ours. This class is survivable, but you have to work hard.
Bliem is a solid choice for CHEM102. Her lectures are slightly boring, but she is so easy to talk to outside of class. She definitely goes through the slideshows very quickly, so make sure you have them printed out or at least know where to access them outside of class because you won't be able to get all of the information written/typed out.
Bliem does not teach the material during the lectures. Instead, she briefly reviews the confusing material that we are "already supposed to know" and then jumps into practice problems without giving them a good explanation. Tests are impossible and nothing like the practice problems you've ever seen or done before.
Of the 102 professors I would pick her again, but the course ends up being largely self-taught.
Dr. Bliem is so kind and helpful. The course itself is extremely difficult, but she is an awesome professor for the class. It's definitely important to keep up with the readings, warm-ups, and weekend homework assignments. If you put in the work, you can be successful in this course.
Being honest Prof. Bliem was pretty helpful during lectures and offices hours, but the class was extremely hard because its weed out chem. Do sapling, do tons and tons of practice problems, go to recitations and you'll be fine. Chem is standardized so the professor really doesn't matter it's going to be hard no mater what. Bliem was great though.
Chem 102 was difficult, but Professor Bliem helped make it easier. She has a dry sense of humor that I related to. She made coming to class not so bad because she was constantly making jokes or dry comments. Daily work point are earned from clicker quizzes at the beginning of class, so you have to go for that. Overall, Bliem was a good prof.
Bliem is pretty funny and helpful outside of class. However, in class she does not explain very well and goes thru PPoints very quickly. Tests are super hard and picky but 102 is standardized so there is no avoiding this. Definitely attend class and do Sapling. Overall, meh.. Class is doable but if Prof. Benton is an option, choose her instead.
Chem 102 is hard no matter which prof you have. Bliem is hilarious but she is pretty monotone and goes through the ppt slides really quickly. I wish I had gone to more of her office hours and problem solving sessions. Do all the Saplings and go to class and seek help when you don't understand something!
Dr. Bliem is very clear when lecturing and ensures all students understand the material. Reading the assigned pages is important because there is a graded quiz every class. She also has a lot of resources for review and is accessible outside of class.
She is an incredible professor. She gives you a thorough understanding of Chem that you can apply to real life. She speaks in a monotone voice which was weird at first but she does have a sense of humor. I learned a lot in her class and I will highly recommend taking her class.
Bliem was great! She was hilarious, and most of the class time is dedicated to working on problems with her help/ the help of TAs. Use the practice tests, they are very similar to the midterms! Lots of homework, and if you don't do all of it your grade will suffer (speaking from experience). If you keep up with work the concepts aren't too hard.
Bliem really seems to care about her students, but you will definitely get more out of the course if you see her during office hours! Her sense of humor makes class enjoyable and going back through the annotated powerpoints is very helpful.
She cares, but chemistry is hard anywhere you take it. Be prepared for a lot of work and a lot of studying!
Chemistry is so incredibly difficult literally everywhere. However, Prof. Bliem is a really cool person and is definitely willing to work with you and help with any questions you might have. The exams are pretty hard and you NEED to study for them, no questions asked. There are tons of tutoring opportunities, so take advantage of those.
Bliem is a decent lecturer, but CHEM101 is just difficult in general. Of the two professors, I've heard she is preferred. There is lots of small homework assignments, but they're not worth very much compared to exams. Exams are very tough even with a lot of studying. Def a weed out class, but Bliem is pretty good. They offer a lot of help.
Chem 102 is a very difficult class regardless of who you take it with, but Bliem is very approachable and holds lots of opportunities outside of class for extra help, and will even put effort into learning your name if you make an effort to seek her out.
Bliem is pretty boring and isn't great at explaining concepts in class so if you really want to understand the material then it's best to go to her individual office hours so you can meet with her one-on-one. The tests are really hard because they definitely try to trip you up so good luck lol
Love Professor Bliem, ok lecturer but super approachable and friendly outside of class, is a lot of work but highly recommend Bliem for Chem 101.
She tries very hard to be funny and relatable to her students and she's friendly. I had an 8AM with her and she sympathized a lot with how tired we always were. Regarding content, I feel like I didn't learn as much from her lectures as I did from the textbook. She's not great at explaining things. But overall a very caring professor.
Terrible professor. It's like she thinks the entire class understands the questions because one or two geniuses get it right. She lets us work on hard problems while we're clueless instead of showing us how to do it first. I didn't make a high enough grade to move on so I'm retaking it with another professor.
She isn't as awful as others make her out to be. CHEM 101 is indeed a "weed-out" class and you HAVE to work for your grade. She is funny and sympathetic, and like other professors she EXPECTS you to come to class with some knowledge of the lecture's material. Read and do the assignments! You won't do well otherwise. I made a 98 in the class.
Amazing professor!!! She teaches the material very well and tells funny anecdotes to make the class interesting. I definitely suggest taking her class.
Dr. Bliem was truly the kindest and the most caring professor I've ever had (she brought candy for EVERYONE on LDOC)! That said, she rarely taught the material because it was a flipped classroom which made learning chem really difficult. She mostly went through examples as opposed to actual concepts of chemistry.
Chem 102 is going to be hard with whoever you take it. However, Bliem makes the class a little more bearable. Her lectures are very helpful in solidifying the material (you're expected to come to class with an idea of the material) and as long as you actively engage and study (study, study, study), you can do this.
Bliem makes 102 better! I took notes on her powerpoints before class, did all practice problems in class, and used mastering hw for more practice. Bliem spends most of her lecture focused on practice problems. Her problem solving sessions (outside of class) were GREAT! The sessions helped clarify my questions. Bliem cares! Best 102 professor!
Bliem? Sweet, down to earth, I was alright with her. Class? Mandatory attendance with quizzes at the beginning of every class, followed by practice problems. Grading? Absolutely miserable. No curves, with a mid to low C average on every test. I went in with AP Chem experience. The class is killer if it's all new to you. I hated every minute. GL
She is a great prof! She is very mono-toned and has a dry sense of humor but she knows her stuff and is committed to making sure you understand the chemistry. Go to office hours and do all the home work and ask questions and you will get an A
Prof. Bliem was nice enough, but she was one of those professors who said "Well we expect you all to get Cs in the class because that demonstrates a basic understanding of the material. That's great and all, but when you get a C in the class it does not do good things for your GPA.
Bliem made me actually like chemistry again. Her sense of humor was so dry that it was comical, but her monotone voice made lectures hard to sit through sometimes. This class isn't easy, but not impossible if you do the work. Don't waste your time reading the book because all of the information is in the lectures.
Gen Chem is hard anyways but I feel like there are much better and organized ways to teach. She really didn't help the students learn in an effective way
Dr. Bliem is very kind and makes jokes during class, but she does not teach the material at all. It's a flipped classroom so you have to teach yourself everything and she will work out a couple problems during class. The exams are very difficult and there is no curve.
I thought she was a pretty good chemistry professor. I felt like the structure of the lectures made me prepare a lot for class which helped me with the practice problems in class and the exams!
Professor Bliem was a great professor and I enjoyed going to lecture. Chem 102 is a difficult class but Professor Bliem made it easier to understand. As long as you put in the work and study for exams, it isn't that hard to do well. The practice problems in class were helpful. Prof Bliem is caring and wants all her students to do well.
Definitely a hard class but she tries to make it more interesting. Bliem expects a lot though and is not very accessible outside class. Doesn't really explain much during class too and is a flipped classroom which made it more difficult to understand concepts.
Dr. Bliem is caring and very sarcastic during lecture, which made it more interesting. She clearly explains concepts and provides a lot of practice problems in lecture. Chem 102 is test-heavy and there aren't any midterm drops anymore, so you have to keep up with the material. Altogether a good class!
Bliem sets her students up for success by effectively explaining chemistry concepts and giving relevant practice problems during class. Exams can be hard, but they are more than doable if one pays attention in class. I also felt that she cared about her students and wanted them to do well. She was also very funny/approachable; great prof overall.
Professor Bliem is so kind and genuinely cares about all of her students. Chem 102 is a difficult course, but she makes every lecture engaging and clear. Plus she's got an incredible, dry sense of humor and a whole lot of passion for chemistry. Tests can be tricky, but with enough studying and work it is a totally doable (and sometimes fun) class.
Professor Bliem is great! Chem 102 is a difficult course, but Professor Bliem makes it enjoyable. The exams are doable as long as you study and put in the effort. Be prepared to study a lot!
She is very sweet and tries to learn a lot of students names even though it's a huge lecture. I thought the 102 team was way more organized than the 101 team but the 102 exams were at times unreasonably difficult with questions that I know were not practice problems because I did them all. However, the exams are doable if you study everything.
Prof Bliem is one of the best teachers I've had at UNC. She is very caring about her students, if she saw you worked hard and put in effort, she created so many opportunities to increase grades. Her tests were hard and homework was a lot, but her lectures are helpful and she puts all the ppts online. She's also pretty funny! Definitely take her!
I would highly recommend taking this class with Professor Bliem. She is so kind and really wants to see her students succeed. The class is difficult, but if you put in the work outside of class you will do well. She is also very friendly so I highly recommend going to office hours to get help and let her get to know you.
I took this class even though I had credit for Chem102 (bad advice from academic advising) and struggled immensely. Exams are VERY HARD. Exam questions are heavy applications and the wording makes even the easiest topics seem impossible. GO TO OFFICE HOURS! In office hours, Bliem is very helpful and it's clear she wants students to succeed.
Prof. Bliem expects a lot of effort, but if you do the work it's very possible to get an A. She was extremely caring, went out of her way to accommodate students in her office hours, and is easy to talk to. Definitely do the recommended problems and get help when you need it. Tests have a definite learning curve.
Bliem is not the worst professor, but lectures are very boring. The practice done is class is never like the exams. Each class you start by taking a quiz on the material that you WILL be learning that day. Not that it matters if you do good on this quizzes since your whole grade comes from exams that are made to be way harder than what is taught.
Chem 102 is a very hard class. But, Prof Bliem is a very caring and kind person who wants you to succeed. Sometimes her lectures can go a little fast but if you're struggling her office hours really help. Exams are difficult but you feel accomplished with what you've learned. She's not a bad choice
Nice personTerrible Professor. Taking exams in this class ruins my self esteem for weeks. I work very hard and study for hours in preparation for each midterm. The midterm is never like the homework, warm ups or quizzes. She recommends not to read the textbook but makes exams 100x harder than lecture. Exams are essentially your entire grade. :((
Professor Bliem is a nice person who appears to care about her students. However, she moves through class material quickly without explaining concepts thoroughly. She plays a large role in creating the exams, but failed to go over one of the major concepts on our most recent one. I'd recommend a different professor if you want to do well on exams.
Chem 102 is a hard class regardless of what professor you have, but I truthfully believe Bliem is your best bet. She gives you a bunch of material to prepare for the test and if she'll go out of her way to help you grasp material if you go to office hours. I love Bliem. Not sure what these students who are giving bad reviews are doing.
The most inconsiderate teacher I've ever had. Always answers emails rudely and clearly lied about the the median on the hardest exam because everyone I know failed. Test are nothing like the practice exams.
This class was okay until COVID made it online. My exam score dropped 15 points even after I studied for weeks. They tried to make up for it with a new grading system but it was just really unfair. But, if you're taking the class in person, it wasn't bad. I was able to score high Bs on the tests and she is very helpful. It's bad online tho
Chem102 will be hard no matter what, but I would 100% recommend Bliem to anybody signing up for the course. The material, homework, and exams are the same no matter what professor you have, but Bliem really takes her time explaining difficult topics in class. She also has very good communication with the TA's on topics for exam review sessions.
She is precious. She cares so much about her students and wants nothing but your success. The class is painfully diffucult, and she sometimes stumbles when explaining concepts in lecture, but it's clear she knows her stuff. While I hated the class, I have nothing but respect for her. Keep up on your readings, and go to supplemental instruction!
Bliem is so precious. This class is HARD but she makes it bearable. She once took 5 minutes to talk to us about the sweater she knit and related it to chem. Put in the work, study, take bliem, and this class will be ok. It is by far the hardest class I have taken though so be prepared. Love Bliem!
Chem 102H is significantly harder than reg 102 so keep that in mind if you already have AP credit. Prof Bliem is fantastic and she is very helpful in office hours and you can tell she cares about her students. She also gives a lot of chances to get extra points but it is definitely not an easy A, even if you have chem experience.
She's really sweet and is always happy to answer questions. I'd say she's the most helpful in office hours. She sets it up like a open Q&A and problem solving session and tells us what to focus on (and what not focus on) for exams.
Never felt like I learned from her, I was always just teaching myself the concepts from the book and class wasn't helpful until I'd finally taught myself enough to understand the constant practice problems she gave in class. All that just to get to the test and see the most extreme questions possible. Whole class felt like a fight to survive.
I get that chem 102 is difficult, but this was BAD. You're basically expected to understanding everything before coming to class or you'll be lost, we spend most of class time going over practice questions instead of a lecture, and the tests are 20x more difficult than anything presented. Maybe it's the whole department and not the prof, tho....
Dr. Bliem has a monotone voice but in a good sweet grandma way. Really all the Chem professors have the same lectures but she shows her crocheting and her life once in a while. I feel like most of the low ratings are just premeds worried about their GPA, but I felt she was pretty lenient with the whole coronavirus transition.
Professor Bliem is amazing! If you have a conversation with her, you will see how much she genuinely cares about each of her students. Although chemistry can be a challenging subject, Professor Bliem gives great study tips and lectures that really helped me to gain a deeper understanding of the content. Take her- she is a great choice.
Terrible professor. She doesn't teach in class and didn't prepare us well for what to expect on exams.
terrible professor, terrible class.
She's nice, but not a great professor.
Homework takes forever. Exams are basically in a different language. I suck at chem in general but this class was out to get me. This professor is a sweet lady though, she always made me laugh. But I didn't retain anything from lectures and the exams killed me. Good about partial credit though to help me pass.
Professor Bliem is an understanding woman and knows the material. She explains the lectures well but they are only presentations so they aren't too helpful. She is accessible outside of class and tries to learn some students names. She tries her best but, ultimately, the teaching method is subpar and you have to put more effort into learning.
She is such a sweetie. I took chem 101 in the fall and got a C, I was really scared to take 102. She worked with me and taught my how to study and I finished 102 with a B+! Super kind professor and really takes time to get to know your name. The class is hard, its 102, but if you go to her office hours and ask questions in class, you will succeed.
A good teacher and class structure, but the exams were absolutely awful. They were not difficult, but they were in a linear format where all the hard questions were at the end, and with barely any time to do the exam, it set students up for failure. I felt I knew material well but the tests did not accurately measure knowledge, but testtaking speed
Professor Bliem is a great professor and really knows her stuff. Sadly, the online format of the class meant that concepts were self taught and then reviewed in a shortened class period and in breakout rooms. Tests are hard because there are only a few questions so it's easy to lose points, but if you know your stuff you should be good to get an A
This class was difficult enough being online during a pandemic but I felt like Bliem made it worse. She knew that a lot of us were struggling and frustrated with how the tests were being linearly formatted. Her response was very nonchalant. The amount of homework and online quizzes were excessive. The graders were always harsh. Wouldn't recommend
Professor Bliem is a good professor and such a sweet person. However, the linear tests were so rough. I felt like I really understood the material in this class but my grades did not represent that due to the exam format. I think I would have liked her class if it was in person.
Professor Bliem is such a sweet lady and is passionate about her work. However, the online format made this class pretty difficult. The course is entirely self-taught; you must watch a lecture and complete a warm-up, pre-class quiz, and in-class activities every time before class. I would have definitely done better had this class been in person.
Having taken AP Chemistry in high school, this class was an excellent way to review material from high school chemistry. Professor Bliem is very personable and was always available to answer questions; her office hours are very helpful. Her explanations of concepts can be a bit rushed, but she did a great job of giving us challenging problems.
I had Professor Bliem for 102H. It was a challenging review of both gen chem classes. Lots of time-consuming readings and work to be done. Easy to lose motivation or be frustrated. HOWEVER she's the sweetest and makes great deadpan jokes. The material sucks but she and her TA have so many opportunities to get help outside of class.
Prof Bliem is a gem! Sweet old lady and super accessible out of class (go to office hours!). Class challenges you, but she is super reasonable and you learn so much. Sets you up VERY well for future chem classes. She does curve exams (based on the best score). Research project is a nice grade boost and super interesting! Definitely cares a lot!!!
Prof Bliem is so sweet and really wants her students to do well! She is super accessible outside of class. Her classes are mostly going over example problems so you pretty much have to teach yourself the concepts beforehand, but if you have any questions (or even if you don't) just go to office hours. Her tests are hard but don't be discouraged
Not accessible at all! They say post q on forums but it ended being a sea of unanswered questions and many were on class logistics which PMs cant help with. Linear format was a nightmare and each question was worth a lot of points . I knew most of the content already from AP so I didn't struggle much with the content but i totally would if i didnt.
This is the worst class I've ever taken. Students are expected to read the textbook ahead of time and teach themselves. There is no lecture during class, only practice questions in groups. Dr. Bliem is more concerned with students answering PollEv questions than teaching the students. She is rude and short with students and does not seem to care.
Dr. Bliem is really nice and I definitely learned a lot from her class. Sometimes in chem classes, no matter how hard you try you can't get an A, but that's not necessarily the professors fault. She was always respectful of students, and good at explaining material.
Students have asked so many times for more lecture based learning (since everyone learns differently) and it has been refused. She seems to not care what students want at all. Makes the class way more difficult than it should be & questions are never answered well (makes you feel dumb sometimes). TAKE ANYONE ELSE!
I took 102 in fall 2020 and was okay with AP Chem in place of Chem101. Chem102 is often considered a weed out, so be prepared to put in work no matter who you get as a professor. Dr. Bliem is very nice, but you definitely need to spend some time learning out of class to do well.
She was alright. For the people who went to class every day and put in the work, the class was doable. CHEM 102 is hard regardless, but the mentor review sessions and ChemPossible make it learnable, not really Bliem herself
Like all chem teachers at UNC, she's a crazy cat lady. Her lectures aren't bad, but they're too short. The amount of work for this class is wild. 1-2 pearson assignments every class + quiz, forum posts every week, plus additional worksheets every 3 weeks. You can very easy fall behind. READ THE TEXTBOOK AND GET TUTORED TO SURVIVE! Roll the dice.
Why did the UNC Chem Dep think this class could be taught virtually? The 'Lecture Heavy' tag is rather ironic considering we didn't get any. There are no lectures. You are assigned readings out of the textbook and expected to come to class knowing how to do them. Mental health obliterated !
This woman is awful. Absolutely no lecture (not even lecture videos). What's the point of me paying tuition just to read the textbook and do a billion homework assignments with zero instructions from the instructor? Exams are set up to fail you. Active learning is great but if the teacher doesn't play a role in the learning it's a disaster
All of these bad reviews are from freshmen who aren't prepared for UNC chemistry. I've taken gen chem, 241, and orgo and Bliem's 102 class is still the best one out of all of them. 100% recommend taking her, chem is hard either way, but she does it best. A lot of these negative reviews are about things she has no control over (that's the chem dept)
Bliem is a kind person but that doesn't justify someone with horrible teaching skills. I'm not sure if it's the chem department as a whole this semester that's worsened her teaching style (I saw a lot of reviews before taking this class that she was great which is why I made sure to get her, which was a huge mistake), the experience was horrible
Dr. Bliem is not what these reviews say she is. She was a great choice for the class and she was really nice. The content is super hard but I don't think Dr. Bliem did anything to make it harder, plus there were a lot of resources. The class was meant to be a flipped classroom so of course she's not going to go through everything in lecture.
Dr. Bloom is an incredibly nice person outside of the classroom setting. She is not a good instructor. While you can tell she cares about her students, her teaching style is not effective for many people and left more people confused and paying for tutoring than anything.
The CHEM dept. just sucks. Like seriously take CHEM at a CC and transfer it unless you're already a chem genius. Online, there was no lectures, insane amount of work, impossible exams (medians 64). There was a petition w 900+ students asking for lectures, and nobody in the dept. cared. Can't rlly comment on Bliem, she literally didn't even teach.
The new Chem 102 curriculum for this semester was awful. It was entirely teaching yourself and test heavy. Test medians were always low 60s. My test average was high until the final which dropped it two letter grades. I did extra credit too. I would advise caution when taking this class and make sure you are taking 13 credit hours vs 16 or 17.
Bliem has no empathy during a pandemic and has students learning new content up to 2 days until the final exam. class time is spent mostly in breakout rooms with peer mentors who teach more than the professor. flipped classroom style so if you enjoy teaching yourself everything you're in luck
Seems to be a really nice person, but was unaccommodating in the context of online learning and the pandemic. Median exam scores of around 64 seemed to be of no concern to her. Not sympathetic to technological difficulties. Go to peer mentor sessions, they explain the content and teach much better than Prof. Bliem.
You will 100% be dissappointed. Not in yourself but with the chem department. Bliem seems like a wonderful person but the way she structured her class is awful. The test is what seems to mess up everyone. They are content questions and formats that you will never see once in class. They aren't anything like in class activities or the homework.
If anyone gave bliem a good rating, they are either good at chemistry or involved in the chemistry department themselves. She is a passionate lady but unfortunately does not know how to lecture effectively. The class was entirely self taught with exams being immensely harder than any of the in class problems. disappointing.
Dr Bliem seems nice. But I am disappointed in the chem dept. and that she wouldn't stand up to a corrupt dept. for her students. The way the course was formatted online was terrible, and w the amount of students struggling through this course, a good professor would hate to see that and recognize something needs to change. She's a pawn to the dept.
This class was the hardest I've taken. Bliem's lectures were confusing and full of passive agressive comments. The tests were impossible (class medians in the low 60s) and completely different from practice problems done in class. The chem department just sucks. If you have to take this course, I recommend finding someone else.
Median test scores (they won't tell us the average, wonder why...) are consistently in the 60's and the professors don't think that this is any cause for concern. I learned 0 from Bliem and had to rely on the peer mentors to understand anything in this class. The practice exams/problems were nowhere near the level of difficulty of the actual exams.
Bliem seems like a nice person and while chem 102 is a hard class with any professor, I would never take it with her again. We had a crazy amount of work and had breakout rooms every class that were not helpful whatsoever. I honestly didn't learn much this semester except that I now hate chemistry. One bad test and your grade is screwed. Rip my gpa
While chemistry has never been my strong suite, during the course of this class I got frustrated and cried too often to remember, and I reevaluated my life goals constantly. Bliem did not care about the students at all until the last 2 weeks of class, most likely because she was forced too, and she was not very kind either. Learning is 200% on you.
Awful class and teacher. Do not recommend.
Professor Bliem is super nice and responds to emails fast, but her online lectures were confusing and I did not learn much from them at all. She also would not record the lectures, so if you did not understand the concepts then and there youre basically screwed. Nice person, not very good at online teaching.
Last semester I made an A- in CHEM101 (online). I felt very confident in my chemistry abilities going into this semester. However, I got to the midterms and realized they were written to be insanely difficult for a general chemistry course. I found it hard to learn the material since most of class was spent in breakout rooms.
She expects us to learn everything from the textbook (zero in-class lectures but attendance is required for group work) yet the exams reflect nothing from the book.
The format of this class was unacceptable. I understand that chem @ UNC is hard, but at least most professors give you the material you need to succeed (not in this one). No satisfying in-class lectures, let alone recorded ones. This was a horrible experience and the peer mentors taught me so much more than the prof did.
This class is HARD, but it does not help when Professor Bliem does not provide the necessary materials to pass the class. This class is 85% self-learning and trying to make sense of the textbook. None of the lectures are recorded Bliem believed that watching recorded lectures would not benefit us, so many of us struggled. ;-;
Worst class I've had at UNC. Peer mentors carried the entire class and taught more than actual professor. There would be 300+ people in their zoom review sessions.... Huge workload, no recorded lectures/lecture videos, you have to teach everything yourself, only began to upload annotated lecture slides the last month because we petitioned the dept.
Hardest class so far at UNC. There was barely any teaching done; entirely based on self-learning and doing pointless practice questions that did not correlate to tests at all . Classes were not recorded and the tests were 100x harder than practice questions and tests. Huge workload with no leniency. Be prepared to sacrifice your whole semester.
Poor Bliem. Seems nice overall but this class was just not meant to be online. Tests were extremely difficult and not like anything discussed in class. Content of 'lectures' is supposed to be self taught and that is simply not feasible in a class like this. Kind of an attitude all around from the CHEM 102 team. It seems they wanted students to fail
Prof Bliem is a sweet lady but is sadly a product of the UNC chem department. The chem department received hundreds of complaints from students and did absolutely nothing in response. Don't take other hard classes that require your detailed attention and time or you won't do well because of how much is expected of you.
Professor Bliem is nice, but this is not meant to be an online class. It was entirely self-taught and honestly just difficult for no reason at all. I think the circumstances would be different for an in-person class, but I would not recommend unless you are comfortable learning from the textbook rather than learning from lecture.
While Prof Bliem seemed to be a nice person, her teaching method this semester was inadequate. The class was almost all self-learning from the textbook, class time felt useless, the peer mentors helped more than the professors, and the tests were unfair in an attempt to curb cheating. I only did well because I had taken AP Chem in high school.
Bliem is an okay choice for a CHEM102 professor. She tried to be helpful but could come off as condescending at times. We basically had to teach ourselves the material and the peer mentors taught us way more than the professors ever did. The tests were unnecessarily hard and practice problems did not resemble the exam questions.
Dr. Bliem is the worst professor I've had at UNC. The class had a flipped-classroom approach but she would do the bare minimum in lectures so you essentially taught yourself the whole course. She had an attitude and always seemed like she was ready for the class to be over with. The tests were insanely hard and didn't match the in class-questions
We got no lecture videos and had to teach everything to ourselves. I learned absolutely nothing from Bliem during class and learned everything from the peer mentors in their review sessions. Also, no matter how many practice problems I did, none of them were of the same difficulty as the exams. Exams were insanely difficult for no reason.
Dr. Bliem was disrespectful to her students. I hadn't understood why the chem department had gotten such a bad rap, until I met one-one-one with Dr. Bliem. It so often felt like she was talking to us as if we were children, using phrases like, " I know you already have the polls open." I would highly recommend taking any other chem 102 professor.
Lol- so all of those tags are supposed to be a joke. None of them are true. Looking back at all the reviews, I realized how much this professor made my blood boil. Seriously take this class elsewhere. The UNC Chem Department is horrific.
Professor Bliem is a nice lady, but online was extremely difficult and professor Bliem did not take the situation into consideration. There was way too much work and the tests were so different from anything learned in class. I am sure that in person, things would have been better, but I definitely do not advise online class with Bliem
Exams were open note but very difficult despite having attended mentor sessions and every lecture. Conceptually much harder than 101, and exam weight made the course stressful. Bliem is evidently smart but sometimes struggles to explain concepts in a way that students can understand. Workload is heavy; the course is a serious time commitment.
Never recommend. The synchronous lecture time was spent completing practice problems, which did not prepare you for tests. It was the student's job to learn the material outside of class & there was no teaching involved on the professors side. The tests were impossible, Bliem wouldn't even discuss them in class because everyone did poorly.
I had to essentially teach myself this class because all we did during class was practice problems, which were not in ANY WAY comparable to the difficulty of the exams. Despite knowing the material incredibly well, I was not able to do that well in this class. To be fair though, all 102 students struggled this semester despite the professor.
I struggled in the online class, but I won't put that against Bliem. I will say that lectures were not very helpful because a lot of it was simply problem solving rather than conceptual understanding. I encourage everyone to work extra textbook problems as these are most test like. Will have to put in extra work to succeed.
Dr. Bliem is very nice and caring, but her online lectures were a bit useless. Most of the learning was done on your own. Lots of homework. She definitely made you work for your grade. I took AP Chem, so this class was a review and it was still difficult.
Thought this class was a challenge, TA was amazing though!
Professor Bliem cares very much about her students and their growth. This was a very challenging class but she allowed each student to have many opportunities to ask questions inside and outside of class. Only take this class if you are confident in doing the hard work and knowing that it is ok if you get one bad grade.
Great professor, especially for the honors CHEM 102 class! Make sure you do the Before, During, and After work to stay on top of the material. Do your best to go to every mentor review session and to her problem solving sessions. Teaches grit and how to study most effectively for chemistry. I switched from to being a chemistry major after her class
She makes exams impossible, the exam averages have been below failing and they are not curving. I am withdrawing from the course. She does not teach well at all, its a flipped classroom and she just works out problems in the most complicated way possible
Professor Bliem is, in my opinion, a great lecturer. She teaches chemistry in terms that are helpful for students who haven't taken chemistry before. She is very engaged with her students and encourages student feedback. I dropped this same class last semester because of a horrible professor, my test averages jumped from the mid 60s to the mid 80s!
I can't blame Prof Bliem for the difficulty of Chem 101, but I do wish she slowed down a bit and explained certain contents more. However, she is a very kind person and I can tell she is passionate and wants the best for her students!
Bliem is a great chemistry professor. A lot of reviews are negative and blame the difficulty of the class on Bliem. Keep in mind that chem 101 is difficult no matter who your professor is. Bliem is great at explaining and I loved her lectures. If you want a good grade in the class you'll have to work hard beyond lecture, GPSS was a great resource.
Chem 101 is going to be difficult no matter what. Bliem did a great job in explaining the material and also giving time for students to do practice exam problems in class. Although she did go fast at some points, we had peer mentor students that would help us during lecture. Definitely have to work hard and study a lot to pass this course.
You can succeed if you work hard. My advice is that you actually take the time to read the textbook thoroughly. There are practice problems in the book (with explanations) that make it a lot easier to do the associated homework. Make a study group, go back over class slides and do practice problems before tests. Focus both on concepts and math.
The Chem department in general at UNC is very difficult. Your exams count for the majority of your grade, and outside of the course you will still have lots of homework. However, Professor Bliem was a great professor, this making the more challenging aspects of this course easier.
I think Bliem explained everything really well, but chem is a very hard course from the beginning. The tests are much harder than any of the assignments because the other professor made the other tests. They were really accommodating with covid and gave us a lot of buffer points. Go to chem possible and solving sessions for extra help.
CHEM101 is a hard class in general, and I barely made it by. However, Professor Bliem really taught it the best she could. She clearly understood a lot about chemistry, but she also understood that many of us didn't have much prior chemistry knowledge. I found the way she solved problems easy to grasp, and she's super nice. DO NOT SKIP CLASS.
Chemistry is hard at UNC period. I disagree with pretty much everything about the way it is structured, but that being said I think Dr. Bliem truly did the best she could within the confines of the department standards. She is funny, kind, and understanding. I think she is a good option for 101. Also, GO TO CHEMPOSSIBLE.
Professor Bliem is a great lecturer, and she encouraged all students to succeed in an otherwise really difficult class this spring. If you have questions during the lecture you'll probably talk to the TAs, but Prof Bliem is also accessible outside of class to discuss general study tips. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it!
Professor Bliem is an amazing Chemistry professor. She engages the class and understands that Chem-101 is not an "easy A" class but does everything in her power to help you succeed. She encourages students and thoroughly attempts to learn everybody's name in class (300+ people). You're encouraged to talk through ideas and problems. 10/10 for Chem!
Bliem is honestly a gem of the chemistry department here. She's very witty and always tries to make her lectures engaging! She does genuinely try to learn as many names as she can, and is very understanding. . Midterms are difficult, but if you genuinely pay attention to the lectures, you will be fine. Many people who rate her poorly don't listen.
I really enjoyed her as a professor even though CHEM 101 is not always the easiest class. Be prepared to work hard in this course. I recommend going to Bliem's GPSS and that is where you can meet her and have her teach in a smaller group setting. She makes lots of references to help you understand the material. She is a fantastic professor!
Bliem is a good professor who cares about her students' success. CHEM 101 is not an easy class but she does her best to explain things in the best way possible. Her class is flipped where you learn the content before and practice in class. You do have to work hard outside of class to pass. Go to the GPSS sessions.
Prof. Bliem makes this class harder than it needs to be; she doesn't always adequately cover the material required for exams (which are the same for all 101 sections).
CHEM 101 is definitely a weed out course, but I thought Dr. Bliem did a really good job teaching it and setting expectations. Go to GPSS and do the recommended textbook problems.
Professor Bliem is one of the best professors at UNC. She does a great job of engaging the class and has a great sense of humor. She was incredibly sweet and tried to learn as many names as possible, which is rare and greatly appreciated
The midterms and final took up around 70% of your grade in the class, and sometimes I wish that exam material was better explained in class. Dr Bliem was actually not too bad for a Chem professor, and you need to separate the fact that Chem is naturally harder from the professor. I think Dr Bliem was fine as a professor, but could elaborate more.
Chemistry is a tough subject, especially at Chapel Hill, but Professor Bliem makes the course easier to learn. Pay attention in class!! You will have online assignments for every class, those questions will be very beneficial in helping you mastery the course. Study, study, study. This course is hard for a reason.
Overall, Bliem is a great professor who loves getting to know her students and helping them to take advantage of the available resources. What most people are not happy with is the format of the class (lessons on your own, practice in class) and the fact that chem is a difficult subject in general. Definitely would recommend Bliem though.
She was a pretty good professor who speaks clearly and eloquently. It's very important to pay attention in class. She was also very helpful during GPSS.
dr. bliem is a really sweet professor, but her voice made me fall asleep in her lectures. honestly, chem 101 isn't hard at all as long as you actually do the pre-class readings and learn how to apply the concepts properly by putting effort into your assignments. also since shes the boss lady she gives valuable info on what to expect on a test
She's respectful and funny and her lectures were always easy to follow (as long as i did all the homework and warmups, which requires some time). Make sure to not fall behind with the content and be ready to study a lot. That, together with following the lectures, prepared me for the exams better than just studying by my self the days before.
Good at explaining things and can always point out common mistakes and misconceptions. This class is hard but Bliem is a good bet to get through it.
Do not take this class with Bliem. Literally contradicts the textbook everyday in lecture and instead of explaining her reasoning she simply says "got it" and goes on. I have learned nothing from this class, thank God I was able to pass fail it. In the end I would have likely gotten a B+ but this class is hell and not enjoyable at all.
As long as you read the textbook you will be fine. Just make sure to do the work and the notes and then the class won't be too hard.
Dr. Bliem is a severely underrated professor. She is very skilled at explaining new concepts and answering q's during lecture. 101 will never be an easy class, but she provides many resources for studying and asking q's to the point that any issues I had were more about the time and energy I spent using them. Also she's very funny.
She is an ok teacher although I feel as if she went too slow some times and it was hard to pay attention to her. My bigger issue was that she was absent for the redox reaction lesson and then a few questions of the redox reaction lesson were on the final and I along with multiple people I know were unable to answer those questions due to that.
Overall chem is a very hard course. With any teacher it is required to read the textbook and teach yourself most of the material. Bliem did a decent job at teaching and connecting pre-reading to lessons. The prework and homework wasn't too bad but the tests were the most difficult.
I loved this course so much and Dr. Bliem is extremely helpful, intelligent, and can explain things on a great level! I think that this was the perfect introduction to CHEM. YOU MUST PRATICE TO DO WELL. EVERYONE WHO RATED HER LESS THAN 4 --- it is because they did not do enough work or use the resources on campus.
Took in the fall. Please do yourself a favor and take a different professor for CHEM 101. She doesn't explain things that well. Will be retaking with Fosvedt. Regardless of the teacher I definitely recommend CHEMpossible, SI sessions, Peer Mentors, and Peer Tutors for this class. Very hard. Exams are a nightmare. It IS a weed out class.
Worst class I have ever taken in my entire life. Bliem is not helpful and contradicts the textbook daily.
Bleim explains concepts poorly, and contradicts the textbook daily. When she asks questions to the class, she does not pass a microphone to students who are answering questions, and doesn't really explain why they are right or wrong.
The worst professor I had in my 4 years at Chapel Hill
She is an ok lecturer and the class itself is relatively difficult. Her lectures are organized and give you sufficient time to practice she just doesn't offer anything unique. She has a dry sense of humor and can be a little rude at times but otherwise, she's a fine option for chem for anyone with a decent stem background and aptitude.
Honestly everyone warned me that she wasn't a great teacher, but she really is not that bad. It is a "flipped" learning style so if you don't do the reading before class the lecture makes zero sense
Dr. Bliem was a great professor. The class sucked. Chem 101 was difficult for me and a lot of other students. Ratings for Dr. Bliem are not fair (she's a great professor, but the class is just hard). Three "midterms," where the lowest is 12%, and the two others are 18% of the grade. The final is worth 27% of the final grade. So VERY test heavy.
Bliem is funny, kind, and a great prof. This class is super hard. If you plan to take it, take Bliem or Fostvedt. The other profs do not know how to explain content (at least when I went to their group problem solving sessions) I bombed the 1st midterm but if you lock in from the start you could make an A for sure bc there are a lot of resources.
Prof Bliem is great and does what she can with the terrible UNC chem department. I had her for both 101 and 102. She is aware of how difficult this course is and makes lectures bearable. Overall if you have to take chem here, Bliem is a solid option.
tough exams and lots of hw
Prof. Bliem is a solid teacher. Chem 101 has a common curriculum, so she teaches the same slides and content as the other professors. Sometimes lectures can get dry, but she is very clear and there are a lot of resources to succeed in the class. Chemistry at UNC is tough, but she did a good job explaining concepts and supporting students.
Prof. Bliem is a great person but not very good at explaining. You either understand the content or you do not and then it is up to you to learn it on your own. It is clear she expects you to understand what was read in the textbook prior to class and will not spend time explaining in detail. She does detail problems on sides which is nice.
She does not thoroughly go over any topic. She spends 1 minute on each problem and goes so fast I can't keep up. The textbook did not give enough step-by-step instructions. Info was scattered across lectures, study sessions, and extra help sessions. I spent 10+ hours a week and still did horribly on the tests.
Dr. Bliem is a hilarious lecturer and a wonderful professor! She tries really hard to make chemistry accessible, but if you are struggling you need to go to GPSS while you're doing the material in lecture. Overall, I loved her class and thought she made the painful experience of learning chemistry fun!
Dr. Bliem was a great 102 professor. She spent time breaking down the content into more manageable problems and Bliem does a great job of pointing out common errors. The content is difficult and does take time to wrap your head around but GPSS is available outside of lecture. She also cracks some good jokes during lecture :)
Professor Bliem and the Chem Department get a lot of hate that is really unwarranted. I ended up pass/failing this class, but I would have gotten an A-. The UNC chem department is hard no doubt, but as long as you actually do the work, attend class and recitation, and go to an occasional GPSS if you have questions, you will be fine.
Bliem was a great prof, and probably the best option for 101. I haven't heard any complaints about her, but I can't say the same for the other 101 profs. Definitely the hardest class I've taken here so far, and requires a lot of outside work to succeed. I think Bliem would be close to a 5.0 if the course wasn't so difficult.
Bliem is hilarious and a good teacher, but you have to work even more outside of class to go above and beyond to understand the concepts because she does not teach that in-depth. Smartwork assignments and participation points help boost your grade just like 101. If you don't spend time every week going through the material, you will fail the class.
Professor Bliem is a great teacher, Chem 101 is by nature, a very difficult class. She cares about you but there is only so much she can help you with. A lot of the learning is on your own. I say make good study groups with the people in your class and take advantage of the 6-minute meetings offered (no matter which professor you get).
Professor Bliem is a fantastic professor who truly cares about the students in her class. CHEM101 will be a difficult class, so you should prepare accordingly, but she gives you all the necessary resources to succeed. Make sure you attend lectures, and an iPad may help too.
Chem sucks, but it wasn't that bad if you put the work in. Mrs. bliem was an okay professor very monotone. Get fosvetdt or however you spell it. Use her annoted notes they help a lot. Also don't get behind or you're cooked.
I took this class a year ago but she was the goat as of May 2023.
I absolutely loved this professor and she always had a positive attitude and was very helpful. However, the course in general was just too much and I do not recommend. TAKE AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE!
Professor Bliem is very sweet. You can tell she truly enjoys what she is teaching. She also starts off class with her 'pet of the day' trend she does and it's absolutely adorable. Would recommend if you need CHEM-102.
If you are looking for a Gen Chem professor, look no further. Dr. Bliem is a great lecturer and loves to interact with students. She takes her time explaining concepts in class and has no issue with explaining them again. Gen Chem is hard, but it doesn't have to be painful. My grade truly doesn't do her teaching style justice (or maybe it does).
I loved Bliem. Chem at UNC is no joke, but Bliem definintely made it easier. She clearly wanted us to succeed and was always willing to help if I had a question after class. The important thing to know is that you will have to study to do good in this class, but the content itself really isn't that bad.
Professor Bliem while covering all of the topics provided vague and often confusing lectures. Most of the learning was done outside the classroom or by reading the textbooks and I often referred to other professors notes when looking back at the lecture notes. Although exams are the same get a professor who teaches in a more in depth way.
Bliem is a great professor who truly cares about her students. CHEM101 is challenging, but she provides the resources to succeed, like annotated notes. Attend lectures and use unstuckstudy AI for helpful study prep.
Dr. Bliem is probably your best choice out of the 101/102 pool. I had her for both lectures and have done well in both because she explains things well. Chem is chem but hedge your bets with Bliem instead of someone else.
Professor Bliem is, overall, a good professor for CHEM 102, but you have to teach yourself how to use a lot of concepts outside of class. As long as you study the practice exams and LA review sessions you will do fine and she is clear about explaining concepts in the lecture.
Chem 102 is hard and its easy to lose a lot of points on the tests. Bliem was always very kind and cheerful in class. She does kinda expect you to understand everything from the textbook, class is mostly just practice problems. The test questions are usually harder than in class questions. I wouldn't have gotten an A if I didn't take AP chem in HS
Chem 102 as a standardized course is difficult, considering the majority of your grade is based on 4 exams, Bliem herself is a great, funny lecturer and really makes sure you understand the content. I took the launch section with a class of about 20 which made the experience more personalized, def reccomend for any freshmen with 101 credit already.
I love carribeth
This class sucks, no matter who you take it with. The tests are brutal, the homework is long, and there's a ridiculous number of things you have to buy. Bliem's fine. She adds a bit of humor and some fairly clear lectures. Most of class is spent on practice problems, so use the opportunities you have to make friends to study with.
Bliem is a very sweet professor. Her lower rating isn't deserved quite honestly. The chem department at UNC is hardcore and she does not reflect that. She does a decent job at lecturing. She is funny and genuinely a kind person.
Honestly, at least for CHEM101, I don't understand Prof. Mclaughlin's low rating. She gives great lectures and, despite being in a classroom full of 200 students, makes an effort to ensure everyone understands the topics. Chem midterms are difficult, but this is not Bliem's fault.
She is the best CHEM professor you can get. Utilize her office hours because she cares and wants you to learn, chemistry is just a hard class.
Prof Bliem obviously cares about her students and wants everyone to succeed. However, I found the class to be incredibly difficult and I will be retaking it. Sometimes I felt that she glossed over important topics or did a poor job in explaining them. Get ready to teach yourself most of the material.
She is an effective teacher for a challenging class. Exams are quite difficult, but she doesn't make them.
Ive taken chem101-adjacent coursework three times and I can honestly say bliem does an okay job teaching it. The main struggle comes with exams which are purposely made INSANELY hard for no reason. As a chem major who enjoys chem, exams are not an accurate reflection of your knowledge. Take fostvedt if possible, but bliem is still solid.
Gen Chem at UNC is horrific but Bliem is probably your best bet as a professor.
Really funny and engaging during lectures, explains chemistry in a way that makes sense. Coming from someone who does not like chemistry, she made this class enjoyable and understandable.
Dr. Bliem is a good instructor who has engaging lectures. CHEM 101 at UNC is just very difficult. If I had to take it again, I would take it with her. CHEM 101 is essentially only graded on tests, which are very tricky. My best advice is to keep up with the readings and do the homeworks without Googling the answers.
Bliem is the best. She's straightforward and her lectures are very understandable. CHEM 101 is difficult no matter who you take it with but the best way to succeed is by leaning into the flipped classroom. Also be sure to ask the ULA's whenever you have questions. I would absolutely take 101 with Bliem again if i had the opportunity.
Professor Bliem did a good job explaining difficult concepts. This class was difficult but doable if you have the time to work hard for it.
Dr. Bliem was very enthusiastic and kind all semester. A lot of the bad reviews are here because the tests are hard. It is a weed out class... that's just how its gonna be. I think she does a good job of explaining the content and makes lectures interesting. Chemistry tests get a 2/5 Dr. Bliem prepares you well and gets 5/5.
Professor Bliem is very kind. Especially with a hard class like chem, she is really approachable and I felt comfortable asking questions in and outside of class. She is also pretty funny. You do have to work hard in the class but I think that's because of the subject and I think Professor Bliem does a good job of explaining the concepts.
Chem is hard, and I don't blame my grade on Dr. B but on the organization of the dept as a whole. Bliem is as kind as it gets and made me feel very seen in class. I ended getting close with one of her TAs which significantly improved my experience. I made sure to enroll in her 102. she's a gem and deserves the world.
Prof Bliem is a great person but chem at UNC just sucks. They expect you to know the content before lecture so the lecture isn't much help if you've never taken AP chem. Prof fostvedt's slides were the most useful in studying so I would try to take her. I also just stopped listening in lecture and began to teach myself and seemed to do better.
She was a very nice and caring professor and made us laugh at times. But sometimes her lectures were pretty boring, and I had to learn it after the lecture. The midterms were hard and the final was harder
Chem 101 is going to be a tough class no matter what. Bliem is one of the better chem profs imo and actually cares about you succeeding and understanding. Lectures can be boring and monotone, but I actually enjoyed them and thought she was really funny. Exams will be harder than you expect, be sure to study everything before and after class.
chem101 at unc is HARD, regardless of who's teaching it. Dr. Bliem is super nice though and knows what she is talking about, and I'm very glad I had her. Go to lecture, sit in the front row, actively participate, ask questions, do all of your homework, study hard, and you'll be alright! It's a hard class, but she wants to see you succeed.
She seems like a nice person, but the way she delivered her lectures were so boring. Fell asleep multiple times in class because of how boring the lectures were. If you have to take Chem with Professor Bliem, sit in the first 3 rows so you don't fall asleep during the lectures.
Dr. Bliem is an amazing professor who wants each and every one of her students to succeed. The content is not easy to learn and requires an absolute ton of outside studying.
Professor Bliem is amazing and extremely good at her job. The class is difficult and requires a lot of work but she is clear and doesn't confuse you in lectures. Her lectures are a little mono tone but its chemistry.
Bliem does an amazing job at explaining difficult concepts. Her lectures are interesting if you actually pay attention. Although chem is hard, I feel Bliem does a great job of making it easier and doable. The Chem department in general is hard, so even though you will have to put in a lot to succeed, it is very doable with her.
The Textbooks do not suffice for being a flipped classroom. I never was able to learn from Bliem's descriptions- find a good ULA and cling to them. You MUST attend the worksheet sessions and ChemPossible and do the practice problems. I never figured out how to crack the exams.
Bliem is a decent professor for CHEM 101/102, but she can be condescending. She gets annoyed when you ask about testing accommodations or midterm questions, even when you're just trying to prepare. She knows the material, but her attitude can make asking for help uncomfortable.
Transferred in and took 102 my first semester. Do not use AI to help you with your smart work or you are so screwed on exams. you need at least two days to review the smart works and slides. I've heard people say Chad's Prep helps. You need to do all the problems on the slides before class. Pretend you're a ULA.
The Chem department in itself is very difficult, and it was already highly suggested to attend GPSS and ULA sessions outside of class. However, Professor Bliem was very charismatic in the 6-minute meetings, and she does a good job attending to questions in GPSS.
Bliem is fine, i never rly spoke w her personally but she seems funny and kind. Good handwriting. Gives eccentric aunt vibes. I loved taking 102 with my table (shoutout carroll 111 active learning lab!) You MUST study above and beyond to be prepared for niche details on exams. I found 101 (test avg 98) much easier than the 102 exams (test avg 89).
Just not a good lecturer. For the chems your professor doesnt matter that much, but I have heard that every other professor is better than her. It is easy to tell that she doesn't want to be teaching Gen Chem, just take it with Fostvedt.
the unc chem department is notoriously difficult, and there's no other way she could teach this class because of the curriculum, but her lectures were extremely helpful in outlining exactly what to look for in the exams. go to gpss, use peer tutoring, do chempossible, do the exam type questions and you'll be okay.
CHEM at UNC is very difficult; however, Bliem knows her stuff and is very kind. Her lectures are very helpful for exams. I've had a year of gen chem with her, and my experience has been fine. Definitely a lot of work, but the professor for gen chem has little bearing on your grade. Just go to Chem Possible and use other outside learning materials.
Gen chem is going to be hard, no matter who you take it with because the exams are made by the department. But Professor Bliem is by far the best in the department for gen chem. 102 is over 200 people, yet she will answer every single question, answer every email, and encourage you personally throughout the course if you talk to her.Take chem w her
Professor Bliem is very kind and funny. Chem isn't an easy subject but she is really approachable and supportive of students. I think she does a good job of explaining concepts, and I honestly enjoyed going to lectures. Bottom line for UNC intro chem is you going to have to put in the work, but there's also support systems out there.
The chem department is horrid but professor Bleim was so accommodating to my needs and was readily available. She formally apologized to the class after the 3rd exam because it was that unfair, but if you need a prof for chem102, I recommend.
Professor Bliem was very kind and clearly cared about both chemistry and her students. Lots of studying is required to succeed on the exams, but overall Bliem made my 102 experience pleasant.
Good professor horrible horrible class
Chem is a canon event. the class is rough. Professor Bliem is very kind and cares about her students. She is funny and her pace is slow but still gets through all the content. Even apologized after an unfair exam even though it was not her fault.
I had professor Bleim for Chem 101 and had a great experience however the same cannot be said for 102. She quickly fell behind on lectures in class and began to speed through important and foundational material if it was covered at all. The Chem department leaves a lot to be desired
