She is a hard grader. You have homework due online before every class. She gives labs too. She gives 4 quizzes, 4 midterms and a final. Some extra credit offered. Midterms are 50% of the grade and the final is 25%. Quizzes are 5%. Homework and labs are each worth 10%.
Overall she is a kind and funny teacher. She knows her stuff. The work can be tedious but manageable. The exams make up most of the overall grade. I would know because the final made me miss the borderline to a C grade.
Professor Frates is amazing, she is easy to understand and conveys many complex mathematical concepts in simpler terms. I am currently acing her Business Calculus class and signed up for another class with her this summer. She teaches at a great pace and values in class participation heavily.
Professor Frates is simply amazing. Her lecture style is one of a kind and she gives you a packet of section notes every class. Attendance will definitely help you, just do your all your HW (less than other math classes) and you'll be fine. The final is weighted a bit heavy but thats the ONLY draw back. I would 100% take any class she teaches.
She is a great professor, her note templates make it easy to grasp the concepts. Her tests are very fair, however there are few of them and most of the grade is based of them.
She's the best. Before getting into her Stats summer class, I thought that I'd for sure drop the class because of how intense a summer class is. BUT, she made everything easy. Instead of making us memorize formulas, etc. she teaches in a way that makes us understand things in a conceptual manner. There's daily homework, but they're not too much
She is an awful teacher. I regret ever taking her class.
Her lectures are boring and her teaching is terrible. Had to learn everything on my own
The worst teacher ever. She does not give you study guides for the exams. Exams are really short, which means if you get 2 problems wrong, you fail the exam! Avoid this professor! Please!!!
I hate her.
Mrs. Frates is a fantastic professor. She is one of the only professors I have had at Las Positas who truly cares about her students. She is encouraging and great at explaining topics in calculus. I have taken her twice now and would take her a third time in a heartbeat.
She is super nice and very approachable. She is is able to explain the content in a way that makes sense and her lectures are well paced and easy to follow. Sometimes test questions are harder than lecture, but the difficulty of the tests reflect the difficulty of the math homework. The homework is minimal, but she assigns extra optional practice.
she is hands down the worst teacher i have ever had.
terrible. You have to divert all your time to this alone. Her lectures were nothing like her tests and you don't get a study guide. I do not recommend.
Professor Frates is definitely a great professor. Tests can be tough, but fair. As long as you go to class and take good notes the concepts aren't too big of a surprise. Other than that she really cares about her students. Highly recommend!
Do not take. High expectations. On the first test, most got 50%. If you don't get through a full lecture, you have to teach the material to yourself. Then she expects good test results when she didn't teach the material. Study guides do not help. No notes on tests (so many formulas). Gets frustrated easily causing her to give out more assignments.
Great class, goes over the material really well and the test relates well to what she teaches
She is an average professor; not the best. Tests are heavy and don't really reflect the problems of the class examples. There are 6-8 questions worth almost 10 points each; you have to work for it. She does give good feedback and tips on how to prepare for the exams. So, weigh your chances of passing before you take the class.
Great math teacher! You gotta work for your grade but she is very open to helping you and has office hours! Very organized as well. Just keep up with lectures, do homework on time, ask questions, study really hard and youll pass the class.
This class was asynchronous so we had to keep up with the coursework each week. Lectures are pre-recorded and easy to follow. The tests are a little more challenging than the lecture examples, but with more practice, you'll do great.
Super compassionate, like the class mom. She's extremely personable. Utilize office hours!
Professor Frates was amazing! I absolutely loved her as a statistics professor. Her class was asynchronous and all you have to do is watch the lectures on your own time. She's great at explaining the material and is willing to go further into depth if you're having trouble with concepts. Her tests aren't difficult and they aren't proctored.
Not a good class to take at home. Have to learn by yourself via videos.
Really accessible outside of class, her vidoes make sense. I've failed stats in highschool, but was able to get a 100 on the final exam. I'm taking her again for Calc. I've attended all of her office hours, which helped me to get good grades on exams!
First of all, I HATE math. And this class did not change that. We had the standard weekly hw, discussion, quizzes, etc. She does not have any extra credit, does not drop lowest grade, or curve anything like other profs do. I was on the border of an A and she didn't curve it because she said she was already being too lenient for this class.
I took the asynchronous MATH 1 class this semester, and I loved Professor Frates! There are 4 quizzes, 4 exams, and 1 final. There are usually three sections/topics to cover per week, and daily problem sets that go along with each section's lecture video. If you stay on top of your work and go to office hours, you'll do great. Practice is key!!
Professor Frates I would recommend. I took her online class and there was no zoom meetings although she does post youtube lectures and expects you to watch them. She really does care about her students, she will reach out to you if you're struggling and gives good feedback. For homework we used connect math that was due every week with quizzes.
She's ok. Don't always expect her to be caring; she can be passive-aggressive sometimes. Her grading doesn't always seem logical, but yeah, take her if there's no one better than her.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. Im doing you all a favor. She is VERY harsh on grading and randomly takes points off. Oh and the tests are complete new material so good luck with that. Thinking about getting help...good luck getting a response. She ignores her students and then complains that students aren't willing to learn. You wont survive this class.
She DOES accommodate students as long as you let her know like you are supposed to with every course. Sadly, her parents did pass away but she continued to work while grieving. She has been kind to me and graded my work fairly. If you failed, think about what you did wrong and what you can improve on instead of placing the blame on the teacher.
Had Frates previously and thought she was great, not sure what happened this spring semester. The exam questions had the the most absurd equations and nothing like the homework problems. The grading of exams was irrational and took weeks for her to post the grade. She takes a long time to respond to emails and typically passive aggressive. Avoid.
Once again, Professor Frates was a wonderful mentor! I had her for MATH 1 and just finished MATH 40. She is extremely personable and kind; she is always willing to set up extra office hours to answer questions and explains concepts well with great examples. Her lectures are succinct and easy to follow, and her exams are fairly short.
Very nice and funny. Too much homework and grade was based on exams.
Took her Fall 2022 sem async, lectures are kinda useless because they teach the most surface level concepts and homework is harder, you're basically forced to go to office hours and have a mini lecture there if u want help I've heard. Tests are harder, quizzes are alright, and feedback is rather minimal or sometimes none at all.
Math is very hard for me, she supported me every step of the way. If you meet with here, you will see. This is the first time I pass this course and its because her lectures are very clear. You have a lot of homework problems, but you need them. If you do them and practice them, you WILL learn!
Currently in Frates' statistics class studying and was previously in Calc. If you want a class to cheat your way through, don't take her. If you want to learn, take her course. What other teacher will open up a Zoom with you while she is at her kids' soccer practice? Complain about exam grades, then meet with her. My grades went up every exam.
Sitting in a study group right now, for Frates' stats class. Her asynch is the most organized I've ever seen, her lectures (after the first chapter) were spot on to topics tested., Online homework is annoying and she sometimes agrees with how sensitive it is, but she always compensates for it. End result, we learn. She wants you to learn.
Taking Frates Stats class and I admit this is first A i've ever maintained for a semester. Her lectures somehow dig into topics efficiently, in ways we understand. We just finished ch7-9 hypothesis testing, which is some heavy stuff. And I crushed it. I hate online homework, but get why we do it. You will learn a lot and surprise yourself
I HATE stats. I hate math too. I hate homework. I am so glad I took Frates for this course! She motivates you. She wants to push you to do your best. To work hard. What is wrong with that! Always there to help. Somehow I am learning enough to get a B in this class and I didn't think I could.
I like math but I'm not good at it. I struggled for first half of this class. SOmehow it is all clicking now. She doesn't give up and doesn't let you give up. Even on Zoom. I waited too long to see her on Zoom. So glad I did.
Professor Frates' asynch Calc class is by far the most organized and thorough canvas course. I attended her Hyflex live lecture even though I was not signed up for it, and honestly, her video lectures are just as thorough! To have calc explained so thoroughly in a way I can understand. Best asynch class I've ever taken.
I am taking Prof Frates asynch Calc class and this is my third time taking Calculus. I understand calculus! Yes, it is the third time. Her lectures are so clear that everything clicks for me. She sends us a weekly schedule which helps me organize my days. It is a lot of homework but it is needed to understand. She is always there to help!
I am happy that she is teaching Math 2 asynchronously. Calculus is hard, I'm working really hard, and Math 2 is going to be hard too! But I know I will learn calculus taking it from her. The canvas course is super easy to follow, you have everything you need at your finger tips. She answers some homework questions with videos too if you ask.
Great professor. I took her Hybrid class and never attended to class in person or online. I just followed the canvas lecture videos n it was really easy to follow. The assignment were practice questions from the book. We had 3 quizzes,4 exams, and final exam. She is caring person and answers any question u may have. Definitely will take her again.
She does an excellent job explaining what you're learning in her video lectures and the homework is super useful towards learning the topics, but she is a *very* harsh grader on the exams, which contribute to the majority of your grade, especially if you do not clearly display your work with a good amount of detail and explanation.
This is the first online course I took where everything was so easy to follow. Super organized, everything posted in advance. she makes it very clear to understand. It is hard, but she works with you. I actually learned how to show what i know on paper really well. Something I need this next semester transferring.
To be honest, I've never seen a class so well laid out. Her lectures are like in class style lectures. She lays everything out for you. What to do. How to learn. How to do well on exams. Don't wait until it is too late to listen or do the practice problems. I'm thankful that she is very available to help and support you.
Great professor! Her lectures are really detailed, and she makes herself available to help you. Tests aren't that hard if you do her practice sets, as her test questions are similar to what her recommended problems are. If you have decent studying habits and are willing to work, you'll do well in her class. Highly recommend.
I am in a hybrid class. In person or online. She is the most supportive math teacher I've ever had. She tells you what you need to do to do well, and it works. The class averages are above 75%. A few kids got 0's bc they turn in work without knowing how to do the work. Wonder how that happens? If you take her help and do the work you will do well!
I never had so much guidance and help from an online professor. I did not pass the first two tests and decided to try to get some help. I now just scored two perfect labs. The best part is I get everything now!. You have to do sometimes a lot of work, but she let's you redo the homework and labs until you get them right.
She is a good teacher but also a tough grader. To pass this class you have to do beyond the assigned homework.
Prof. Frates is an exceptionally caring and supportive teacher. In order to succeed in the course, you do need to put in consistent work. I appreciate that Prof. Frates challenges students as a tough grader, an A is hard earned. But by pushing me to truly master the material, I developed a strong comprehension of the concepts.
Professor Frates is caring and extremely helpful. Make sure to do the extra textbook problems if you want an A. Test every unit with a few quizzes but she gives you back your graded tests/quizzes and reviews common errors which was very helpful. One weekly homework assignment & light workload. practice the extra textbook problems and you'll pass.
Prof Frates is one of the strictest teachers I have ever seen in college. She always says that there will be 8 questions on the exam, but every single question actually contains 2 to 3 additional questions, resulting in a total of 16 or 24 questions. So, I recommend to never take her class because she spoils your GPA.
I am taking Calc II async. If you just watch the video lectures and actualy take notes, you know exactly what to expect. Calc II is hard. She does expect you to work hard, she wants you to learn. Other students talk about scoring but she tells you in her lectures exactly what shes looking for. I actually feel prepared for a degree in STEM
I did really badly in this class, but it wasn't Professor Frates's fault. Professor Frates is a good teacher and definitely wants her students to succeed; she tries to provide opportunities for students to raise their grades. I found calculus to be pretty difficult, but you can do well in this class if you put in the work.
Took her online during the summer. The material is not difficult, and her recorded lectures are superb. I did notice that exam questions are worded in ways that make you second-guess yourself. The biggest help for exam prep was doing the labs. Prof was available via email. I learned how to use most of the buttons on my calculator in this class lol.
Uses Proctorio! So good luck using notes on any exams. I took this course online and struggled. I emailed her multiple times and never got a response. Exam averages were always around 70%.
Professor Frates is a nice person and willing to help you. However, the tests are extremely difficult and sometimes completely different from homework problems and lectures. Her lectures are oversimplified so you have self teach a lot. If I had more time this semester, I would have kept the class, but there are better professors to choose from.
Not bad, not great. Other classes worth taking at Laspo to get requirements done
She always gives the hardest problems on tests. Also be prepared to spend at least 3 hours a day on homework.
I took AP Calc AB in high school and thought her class was amazing. You are allowed notecards on chapter tests, she gives great feedback on exams, and lets you keep the graded test. There are many opportunities for redoing exam questions and extra credit. She wants students to succeed and her lectures made the concepts extremely easy to understand.
Professor Frates was a very real and down to earth person. She said from the beginning that if you put in the time to complete the homework and really understand the concepts, you would pass this class no problem. I ended with a 99.5%. She is a very good lecturer, is always open to talk with you, and her grading is very lenient. Highly recommend!
Absolutely amazing math class, I have yet to meet a professor as caring and down to earth as Professor Frates. Calc 2 is hard no doubt, but theres a reason that theres a lot of homework, and if you do it all the test will be light. I wholeheartedly recommend this teacher, what an amazing class and an amazing professor.
She's a good professor, problem is when she teaches she forgets that not everyone knows the subject like she does. Majority lectures she spends more time explaining how the formula was created rather than how to solve it, which is extremely confusing because she never points out ‘this is the formula' needed. Overall not bad.
Amazing prof, much better than my Calc 1 prof. Obviously, if you do not study or do the homework (VERY important) you will not do well in this class. This class requires discipline, but she makes things very easy to understand and follow along. Calc 2 is hard, if you don't put in the work you won't do well. Highly recommend.
Could not recommend this class anymore. I took the class as a hybrid course (where all the work in online but tests are in person) and it is the most organized class I took. Homework is a little long, but it truly helps you understand the material!! Not a weeder class at all. Tests are fairly easy--just do the homework and you'll be fine.
She definitely cares for her students' well being. Professor Frates is a really good lecturer and will give you the time and resources to succeed. Her homework helps you with the tests. Do not take it all lightly, because you need to consisntely practice and study. However, she does show you how to succeed.
Great teacher. Lectures are easy to understand and engaging, clearly expresses what to expect on the test and homework/in class notes are great representations of concepts to be expected on tests
I took Math 30 online, and on the final it says it is available from Friday until Thursday, but on the syllabus it says only Friday. So if you are not very careful, you will miss the final.
Professor Frates is a wonderful person however I suggest not taking summer classes with her. The lectures and tests do not correlate well and she does not give extra material that prepares students for test.
Took over summer. Lecture videos were boring and sometimes didn't reflect what would be on the exam- but study guides were helpful. Overall easy topics. Prof didn't give much feedback, but graded somewhat nicely. Exams have about 7-9 questions total and were remotely proctored.
If you take other classes besides this one then good luck. The amount of homework you receive is insane, thought I signed up for a accelerated course for a second. Problems she teaches on lectures are the easiest things ever compared to the homework she gives. You have to teach yourself new formulas because she doesn't tell you in lectures.
As the semester progresses, the professor covers less and less, making the homework seem less relevant at times. Be prepared to encounter numerous roadblocks and spend 1-4 hours on the homework, depending on how comfortable you feel.
If you expected this hybrid course to be a "breeze", it's not. I had no problems with my asyc calc 1 class, but this is a whole other story. The only hybrid thing about this are the in person exams, making the course feel like emporium. She also gives too much homework and grades exams harshly. Unless youre a whiz at math take an in person section.
Dont take. The professor was consistently inflexible and dismissive of student concerns, even when circumstances were serious. Communication felt cold and transactional, and requests for understanding were shut down rather than discussed. The classroom environment reflected a lack of empathy, which made learning unnecessarily stressful
Do not take. Has lack of empathy for students and is one of the worst professors I've had.
avoid at all costs!
Good lectures. It is very important to pay attention to them and to complete your homework. Therefore this will help you get a better grade then expected.
The class itself was okay. I don't think it was anything unbearable. Definitely not a good professor. She was mean and did not care for her students.
Pick a diff teacher
Awful, I don't recommend her class.
Very rude towards her students. Always in a mood
i understand the negative reviews!
Professor is fantastic with a wide variety of knowledge. If you pay attention you will get a good grade.
I recommend
Great professor
Wants best for students.
You have to do the work, and you'll find success.
i took a hybrid course where instruction is asynchronous and exams are in person.. she is very organized, answers quickly, and grades fast after taking exams. her lectures make sense and exam questions are similar to the ones in lecture. if you do well on midterms, no final. overall easy class, but def need to put in work and do practice problems
Bad. Take any other professor.
