Carrie is amazing! She makes everything very clear and accessible. This class is challenging but Carrie teaches it very well. She wants her students to do well so she will explain something many times in order for you to get it. She is very cool and sharp.
Carrie said she would help but when I went to her office she never even looked up from her computer. I struggled and really needed more help I even had two tuitors. I do think Carrie is nice and even funny but not alot of help outside of class.
Challenging without being too hard. Engaging and very helpful.
Demeaning, Snotty, Your her lowest level of math so she treats you like it. Very Snotty.
Goes too fast, seams to just want to prove how smart she is.
Carrie is a great teacher!I didn't understand math until her class. She goes fast, but if you ask questions, she clearly explains and is very patient. Math in the summer is hard, but I think I will make it thanks to Carrie!
I hate math, especially algebra. Carrie made it fun. She is smart, lucid, very helpful. Math makes sense when she teaches it. Also, she posts all the class notes online so that you can refer to them. I just wish I could have her for every math class I need to take!
Ms. Gibson's class was my favorite. She moves fast and her tests are HARD, but she encourages questions and will explain patiently until she is sure you understood the material. She is a fun and funny teacher and likes to chat with her students, but knows how to keep the class on track and always finished on time. I wish she taught all my classes!
Amazing teacher. Wish I had her for all the math classes I have to take.
Explains everything clearly and more importantly grades fairly. My favorite math instructor so far. She has tougher classes but you will get more out of them.
Carrie is a fantastic teacher! Her explanations are clear and concise. Her knowledge of math is utterly amazing. Best teacher ever!!
Not a big fan of her teaching style, it was you either got it or you didn't. I tried asking a few questions and she made me feel like an idiot in front of the class when I didnt get what she was trying to teach. I DID NOT like her humor at all either!
I hated math with a passion before I took her class. She was a fantastic instructor and I just wish she taught all my math classes.
It was Carrie's first year teaching linear algebra and it showed. Most lectures were strings of definitions and proofs out of the textbook (horrible book, typos, unclear, etc.). The class made no sense to me until I starting using outside textbooks and websites. Otherwise she seems to enjoy math and has a deep understanding of many concepts.
Carrie has a good understanding of math and is willing to help students. She always wants students to answer, even if they give the wrong answer. She grades with TONS of partial credit on tests, and she gives unlimited tries to complete homework on MathXL.
good teacher very thorough challenging class though
I absolutely hated Math before taking her class. She helped me to enjoy it a little. I am now in another math class she teaches. Love her teaching style and how she wants everyone to understand it.
Carrie was by far the best math teacher I have ever had. She definitely knows what she is talking about and is very willing to help anyone if they have any questions. This class was a LOT of work and a very big challenge, but I can't imagine a better teacher.
Carrie is a very condescending teacher. She uses the text definitions and doesn't bother explaining them any further. She uses words such as "thingy" and "stuff" in place of the mathematical terms. I would not recommend her if you are wanting a thorough explanation of math.
She is a great teacher if you like math. She does a great job with her notes and posts her lectures online. I would recommend her to all of my friends.
Great teaching and awesome humor. It is a fast track class, and she states that from the beginning. She is always willing to help if you make the effort to schedule time with her. I enjoyed the use of "thingy" or "stuff" because it saved time repeating it back or explaining. Study and take it seriously and you shouldn't have a problem.
Carrie was pretty great, it's a fast paced class, which she immediately states. She is however super helpful in the study center and always a good laugh. I'd absolutely recommend her, and I'm taking her again for 170(:
I did NOT care for her teaching style. She moves way too fast in her lectures. If you got behind one day you cannot catch up. I dropped this class after a half the class because it was clear I was not going to receive an acceptable grade. I took this course during the summer which was a mistake.
She is a very helpful teacher. She is very knowledgable about teach topic and wants her students to learn. Her tests are quite tough but I learned A LOT.
Great math instructor. Makes it fun and she is easy to learn from . I have trouble with tests but she does give partial credit! Unlimited tries for mathxl homework and its great. I am taking her again for math 108 in the fall! I recommend her to anyone!
As with most Math you need to be in class and keep up to date on homework but I find her a well paced professor with a clear cut method through the material.
I really liked the way she lectured. She explained things very well. Also, I liked the way she graded. As long as you got the concept correct, you would only miss a few points for small mistakes I feel like I learned a lot in this class.
I loved having Carrie as a math teacher. I did better in her math class than I've ever done in math before. Yes, there is a lot of homework, but how else would you learn the material? She makes herself available for any questions and help during class and outside of class. Plus, she is hilarious and always made my class laugh.
Carrie makes her class very easy to succeed in. She is always eager to answer questions and help students outside of class as well. She gives opportunities to turn in homework early, she checks it and gives it back so you can get a 100%! Great teacher!
Her teaching style is fast-paced, clear, and concise. The coverage of the material was thorough and her enforcing habits of clear notation was incredible. She makes you work for the class. I have found that her attention to detail has helped me deal with higher level math. I would recommend her to any student needing the calculus series.
I have learned more about how little she respects her class than I have about calculus by taking this course. She constantly makes condescending jokes towards her students while only giving textbook definitions of concepts and never actually explaining how any of the derivative formulas work.
I have always struggled in Math because I have disability that causes me to have trouble in that area. Carrie taught math in a way that made it easier and fun to understand. I got my first A in a math class ever because of her teaching style!! One of my favorites at NIC and can't wait to have her for 187 and Calc 1&II!! Go with Carrie! She's great!
Calculus is a hard class, but because she has good office hours and is in the Math Study Center a lot, she is very available to get help. Utilize that. Her lectures are fast, but that's because there is a lot to cover. Work hard, do the practice problems that she gives you in the book. She very well prepares you for the test, but be ready to work.
She is extremely clear, concise, and fair in what she expects from her students. This is a upper level Mathematics course, and she treats you like upper level students. Homework is an accurate representation of the exams, and she offers a review was is the closest thing to a study guide you will receive. Overall, great teacher who is passionate!
Carrie Gibson knows what she is talking about, she is able to explain in a way that comes from a place looking like she taught herself, and if you teach yourself something you are a impeccably capable of teaching others. I have taken her for a few Math classes and I couldn't rate anyone higher. She is fair in the amount of homework and grading.
Homework through computer program called MyMathLab (textbook is online, so not a mandatory purchase). MML is tricky to use at first. She places a lot of weight on homework. Her lectures seem like she is constantly angry at you, kind of intimidating. Tests are average (tells you exactly what's on them). High availability. Explains things very well.
Good sense of humor and loves answering questions in or out of class. Lots of chances for extra credit. Homework is harder than tests are harder than the final. Don't procrastinate on homework!
She records all of her classes so you can view them online, whether you missed the class or just want to review. You really only need to show up on test days. If you have a question, just email her and she covers it in class for everybody during the recording. Tests are graded on a curve and partial credit for wrong answers if you show work.
She records her lectures so if you miss a class, you can view it online. All homework is online but tests are in class only, so you have to show up for those. She reviews all homework questions during her lecture so everyone can get help even if only one person is having trouble.
Carrie was a good professor, my gr
Very Organized. Clearly described what was expected of students on several occasions. Pre-Notes and practice tests are provided for all sections at start of class. Nearly all course material was explained clearly, and efficiently. No excuse for failure.
Don't bother taking this teacher. Waste of time and money. Find someone who knows how to teach.
Carrie is a great professor who teaches well and whose classes are highly structured. However, she is by no means for the faint of heart. You must be willing to work hard if you are going to pass her classes. If you are diligent though and study hard, she is a solid choice for an instructor. Though strict, I'd definitely take her again.
Carrie is a great professor, and has an advance knowledge of any course she is teaching. Math 187 is a very tough course, which has long hours of homework, tough tests where she makes sure you know everything and than some, but Carrie does a great job with recording her lectures and giving plenty of homework, I would recommend lots of study groups.
Discrete math is a difficult, worthwhile course. Its not like other math classes, so expect to put in extra effort to understand it with ways such as: getting Carrie's help, meeting with a study group, or getting a tutor. Also, the class is a little heavy with printed notes, and you'll write a lot in them so it helps to watch the online lectures.
She basically reads the chapter in the lecture. Not very inspiring.
If you're taking Discrete, you're better off taking Carrie than the other professor. Discrete is extremely difficult but I found Carrie to be an excellent teacher for it. That said, if you don't study hard you won't pass.
She seems to think she is on stage loves to be the center of attention. If you ask a question you might get a joke response or get brushed off. Wish I could switch to another instructor but my schedule is too tight.
Read your book and memorize it. That's the best way to get through her class.
Gibson seems to not care if anyone learns in her class. She's happy to just go on and on and on while no one knows what she's doing. Just take this class online and learn it on your own.
I compard my notes to a friend's who took the same instructor a while back, exactly the same. I wish I would have known, I would have just studied her old tests. I wouldn't take her again. She's checked out. but is an easy grader.
Not the best, not the worst. Could be better with a better teacher. I will make it through this class because my brother is helping me. Without him, I doubt I could make it with this teacher.
I do not encourage people to take this class because the way it is taught is not effective to learning. I am good at math and generally enjoy it, but am hating this one.
Carrie is a great teacher. I've had two extremely difficult classes with her and both have been worthwhile. She's tough and requires a lot out of her students, however in the long run you'll learn more than enough to be successful later down the line. I would personally recommend her to everybody I could. Excited to have her again.
I was surprised by some of the other reviews. Carrie has obvious favorites in her courses, which is clear after having taken several from her. She has an imperious tone with everyone else, like she is somehow above answering student questions. I am glad this is the last time I will have to endure this unpleasant woman.
I took this class as a way to prepare for statistics. It won't transfer when I move to a four year college. What a waste of time and money. She had no idea what she was doing, no teaching skills, and her personality left a lot to be desired. I hope I never run into her in town, because I would have nothing positive to say to her. Thanks for nothing
I overheard two math students in the tutoring center discussing Carrie teaching Calculus. Chuckling, one said, "on the first day of Calc Carrie always explains that she will not be teaching any theory, just skills in her classes." Both laughed and said, "Easy A". "Yeah, but theory was what I am interested in learning." I concur, lazy teaching.
The class is very homework heavy, but the more difficult part is how many hours I spent after class watching other instructors YouTube videos. The information is not presented in a palatable way. She rushes through lectures and doesnt seem to enjoy teaching.
One of the most worthless courses I've taken, ever. It won't transfer, I didn't learn anything, it was a pain in the ass. From the teacher to the text, the worst.
This course is not well explained. I've read the course syllabus and the course website on Canvas. I've looked at the e-text book and the instructor videos. What a mess! I am now realizing I will have to get a tutor to make it through this horror show. I regret taking this course at NIC from Gibson.
Gibson is not very present in the online version of this class. I am not sure if I will pass or not, but if I do, it will be because I have been watching videos I found online to teach me the material, like Khan academy. I heard from other students about her teaching style and wish I had listened and taken this course from SCC.
At this level, you expect more from a college professor. Gibson teaches skills only, none of the theory, background or philosophical underpinnings. This is a poor model for educating students like myself, who actually love math and are interested in more than rote memorization.
I found out after being "advised" into this class that it will not count for math credit when I transfer. On top of that, this fairly simple material is being poorly delivered, at least by Gibson. This is one of the least helpful instructors I've ever encountered.
The high flunk rate of this class at NIC should have been my first indicator of the quality of teaching at NIC. This teacher is no exception, she cannot teach worth a nickel I had Algebra II in high school (got an A) so I already know most of this material. I hoped taking this class would refresh my knowledge, but this teacher is terrible.
Mostly sits and drones on, not inspired or inspiring.
Boring lectures make this class hard to take. I've had math classes that did not put me to sleep every class, but this one puts no effort toward keeping students engaged. The worst I've had yet.
The videos are obviously not created for online students. They ramble on about things not relevant to the course material and any dates mentioned confuse you because they are probably from some semester five years ago. This seems like an effortless way for the instructor to provide videos, but also shows a lack of consideration for actual students.
She is one of the worst instructors at NIC. She is moody, unpredictable, unprofessional, and out to get you. Wouldnt recommend her for the world.
Reading the other reviews I agree wholeheartedly. She is unkind and not concerned with being professional in her dealings with students. Terrible teacher.
Take it from someone else, unless you already know all the material and don't care how you are treated as a person.
I like statistics, but did not enjoy this class. The teacher and the online book/homework ruined it for me. Not good value for your money.
She is loud, so she's got that going for her. Any other skills that might help one be a successful teacher (communication, amiability, flexibility, creativity) she lacks. I've had to take her for several classes and am glad that I will not have to deal with her again.
Worst class ever. I wish I had taken it from someone else. I don't vibe with this teacher AT ALL.
I'll be more careful to read reviews next time. Reading the comments below I just say DITTO.
For exams, this professor adds in questions on topics that aren't taught during lectures and she expects you to teach yourself and to obtain help from everywhere and anyone else, except from her. She picks student favorites. If you are an A+ student, you will be a favorite. If you struggle with math and want to learn it, don't take this professor.
I've had this material before, and just took this class as a refresher. The teacher at NIC, Gibson, muddled the material at every point, making it very difficult to understand either the details or the connections between the various concepts. She is terrible.
Worst class I've had from her yet. Her ability to disengage students is the only impressive thing about her.
Gibson is tough to take a class from. That said, she is also hard to get help from. She has a kind of arrogant attitude that makes students uncomfortable in class and in her office. It's hard to understand her teaching and impossible to get her to answer questions. I wish I had a different teacher.
Carrie was a great instructor. It was an intense topic but if you don't succeed it's probably because you're not ready for this level of math not because she isn't teaching the content. She loves questions but only if you show you've actually put effort into the content. Homework is worth a lot and the final is super easy.
This online course is designed to create student failure. The instructor is confused/confusing and unpleasant.
Gibson is a fine math instructor and doesn't deserve most of the bad reviews here. She teaches the content well but expects that you are ready for this level of math. Your expected to know algebra and trig so she shows little desire to baby students through these topics. She enjoys questions that shows you've already tried. She is a fine instructor
Her teaching and personality make learning unpleasant. Arrogant and dismissive.
She gave lecture videos from 3 years ago, any time I emailed she never had useful input, sometimes the lecture didn't even line up with the homework. The makeup tests she gives is a copy of the final, which isn't nice if you haven't finished the course. I am using all of the character available in this text box to tell you not to take a this class.
Professor Gibson is a great instructor, and as such she expects you to work hard. Mathematics is not a subject that you can do well in without lots of work. Gibson is very instructive and more than willing to help students during her office hours. I would, without hesitation, take anther one of her classes.
Gibson is awful. She does a poor job of showing (breaking down the components) of how to she got to the answers. She is every selective about who she spend her time with because she teaches 12 other math classes. This is more of a memorization class with 5 exams and a final. I ignored all the bad comments on here and took her class and regret it.
Gibson seems lazy---she sits and orates with little to no interaction with the actual people she is supposed to be teaching. A robot could do her job better than she does.
Carrie is a great teacher, and she doesn't deserve all of these bad reviews. Do all of practice problems that she recommends and keep up on the homework, and you'll be just fine.
1) She grades super fair on tests, which gives you the chance to score well. 2) UNlimited attempts on homework problems, so with enough time you can get 100% on ALL homework. 3) Sometimes the homework load can be heavy. 4) She records every class session (super helpful to rewatch) 5) You have to buy her note's from the bookstory but its worth it
Professor Gibson taught an online summer calculas I class and I managed to get my best math grade yet, with a solid A. VERY hard class but professor Gibson has a great teaching style that clearly communicates what is expected on the exams. She is always willing to help students and answer questions.
I never thought I would rate a teacher but she was that bad. Sometimes she is nice but often she ranges from passive-aggressive to outright rude/mean. The math center was better than her by a lot. She misses class and doesn't tell us but you can NEVER miss a test(they suck) even if sick. Take the hint please and don't take her as I did. Go online.
Carrie is incredibly rude to students asking questions. If you ask a question that is "obvious" to her, she will stare blankly at you before explaining in an unhelpful way. She goes so fast giving notes. She barely gives enough time for tests & adds new concepts on them. She will sometimes not show up to class and give no email warning or anything.
Daily Procedure: 1) Come to class everyday at 8 am 2) Pray that Carrie actually shows up to class 3) Sit through a poorly explained lecture. Asking a question will result in the exact same explanation used in lecture; your questions are not worth her time. 4) Spend the rest of your time in the math center being re-taught by adequate professionals
Run! Run away! If there is another professor teaching the same course, take them instead.
A lot of these students wine about how the tests are hard THIS CLASS SHOULD DOMINATE YOUR TIME. Its two classes in one. If you are not going to class, doing the hw, going to office hours, doing the practice problems, going to tutoring, doing the practice exams, doing the review-- you simply are not trying hard enough and are crying bc things r hard
My first math teacher coming right out of high school, mind you I took honors precal and get a A in the class however struggled so much in her class despite it being the same material. She is rude and her lectures are poorly done, if you fall behind at all good luck figuring out what is going on
To be honest I did not always enjoy this professor but she has taught me much in the class. She might seem a bit scary at first but she does have her student's best at heart. The reason I wouldn't take a class from her again is that she moves fast and I don't have the time for the dedication that her classes need. Textbook is online & rarely used.
Lectures are completely useless half the time. You'll need to go home and learn everything she taught from someone else. She's extremely rude to anyone asking questions in class and will make you feel stupid. Attendance isn't mandatory but she'll assign daily quizzes in class as "homework". If you have the option, take LITERALLY anybody else.
Every day, the same thing: get to class on time and wonder if she will show up. Barely get through obtuse lecture with little insight or applicability to homework. If you wonder about anything, don't bother asking. She cannot explain meaningfully. Try to find another student or tutor to help you learn.
I understand both the students who liked and who disliked Carrie Gibson, but my issue with her was exams. I did everything she asked, but I couldn't get good grades on the exams because they contained mostly trick questions and/or concepts not introduced in the lectures. When I talked to her, the only response was that I wasn't trying hard enough.
Gibson was very difficult to understand during class and very difficult to get help from after class. She is not kind or professional and is acerbic when contradicted.
This instructor cannot clearly explain concepts. She sometimes will solve a sample problem, but you basically will have to teach yourself all the material for this class. Her personality runs hot and cold, mostly cold.
Rarely showed up on time. Long and boring lectures that are easy to get lost in.
I honestly feel that I am scammed by the college every time Gibson is the only prof teaching a course that is required for my degree. I should not be trapped into giving money to this chick who has a long track record of being ineffective. There are many good math profs at NIC, Gibson is not among them. Shame on NIC for her continued employment.
Awful had to drop out. Her tests are nothing like her lectures and unfortunately they make up 70% of your grade.
I feel a little guilty writing this bc she literally lost a limb this semester, BUT, she wasn't great. She made everyone really uncomfortable all the time by being super mean when we didn't feel comfortable participating. She was moody and also overshared about her life a lot and was overall really uncomfortable to be around.
She quickly goes through the class. Now pre-calc is a very tough class, for the students and her as well, but she didn't explain concepts as well as some of the other math teachers at NIC. The class can feel a bit rushed at times as well. If you just want to get though the class she's fine, but if you're new to pre-calc, you might struggle a lot.
I really liked this class, it was the first I took that made me feel like I really understood math, and I aced every test. I think it comes down to teaching style, and understanding her lectures. She takes time to answer students questions and go over the homework. She likes when students participate by asking or answering questions.
This was an awful experience, as she was confusing in lectures and would not answer questions. Friends warned me but I ignored their advice and now will have to retake this.
Gibson is not tech-savvy. Get out of the class, but if ur in it. How to pass: 1. Get a group to study with. Unless you already know pre-calc, ur probably gonna need help 2. Go to MEC 3. Do the HW (don't cheat) 4. Do the practice and review before tests 5. Ask questions during lecture 6. For the final, review all practice tests not just final review
Professor Gibson's class is challenging, but with dedication and tools like unstuckstudy, you can succeed. Her teaching style may feel rushed, but engaging with the material is key. Not for the faint of heart, but doable if you put in the work.
Gibson seems to be there just for the paycheck. I saw no interest from her in helping students conquer the material. She seems to lack awareness that the students are not learning using her methods. This class was a nightmare.
She is tough, but she is a great professor! She is fair, and is a great teacher.
As hard to learn from as anyone I ever had before. Also kind of rude to students and hard to get help from her out of class.
Math was always pretty easy for me. I'm dual credit and have been in Advanced classes, but Mrs. Gibson is not very good at teaching the material. She does 1 example and moves on. Go to the MEC! Do the reviews and practice worksheets cuz they are helpful. The final is based on the reviews and worksheets, too. In class, ask questions speak up.
Not a bad class. Did have to pay for a specific homework software and book (while free resources could have been used) Not a very popular lecturer.
Gibson has a teaching style that is a bit off-putting, her big personality gets in the way of delivering the content. She seems more ego oriented than enthusiastic about maths. Some students vibed with her and seemed to be favorites, while everyone else was left to learn on their own, without help from the instructor.
holy mixed reviews. Honestly, Carrie is a complex dichotomy of a teacher. I flip flop back and fourth between finding her endearing and interesting to finding her annoying and difficult. You'll see as much from the other reviews. main points: - if you don't have a basis, don't take her class - don't take what she does personally - PUT IN EFFORT
She is great. I would take her again in a heart beat. I took MATH-108, MATH-143, and MATH-144 with her, and have learned so much. At first, it is hard, but in the long run, she makes sure that you KNOW what to do, and you will do great if you are willing to put in the time.
extremely fun group, love her sense of humor! She's clear about what is on the tests, and tries to make sure her class knows the information. She can be intimidating at first, but once you get to know her teaching style you really learn the material. she doesn't pull any punches, which obviously offends some people. do the work and you'll do great!
Professor Carrie explains things clearly and takes the time to make sure everyone understands. They're super patient with questions and offer help outside of class if you need it. The lectures are organized, and the homework lines up well with the tests. Highly recommend if you want someone who wants you to succeed.
Gibson is a mixed bag, one day up one day down. Her energy and teaching effectiveness seemed to follow the trigonometric wave pattern of her moods. I do not enjoy this type of experience myself, but some students seemed to thrive in the storm. I would not recommend this teacher if all you want to do is learn math. Not for me.
Tuesday. If you know you know. She's pretty awesome as a teacher tbh, 10/10 would take again.
The material in this class is not too hard, but Gibson's teaching does little to enhance the learning experience. Her moods and reactions to student questions were up and down, unpredictable. I did not benefit at all from her as a teacher, I had to figure everything out with a tutor. If you need actual teaching, take this from someone else.
This class made my semester! Hope to see more of professor gibson! Tuesday
The course material was not too difficult, but the interactions I had and saw with this teacher made the course unpleasant. Tuesday
Gibson gets a bad rap, which I think is totally undeserved. This class was much harder than most math classes, but I don't think that's because of Carrie - it's a condensed class. If you visit the MEC and ask Carrie for help with hard to understand questions, she is a perfectly good professor. I quite liked her teaching style.
She doesn't provide many strategies to learn the material efficiently, as well as relatively poor time management, i.e. late just a bit most days, unorganized therefore slow to teach the lesson each day, rushed lessons because of poor time management skills.
Do the work. The most important part of math is practice and pattern recognition. Super fun professor overall. I've taken all of my math classes up to and including calculus with her so far, and she has been excellent teaching-wise. Maybe not for you if you hate math with a passion since she very obviously loves mathematics and pulls no punches.
Professor Gibson is an interesting lady. She flies through lessons and wasn't very thorough. All the classwork is unreasonably long homework assignments and tests. Very hit or miss.
