Very good teacher, if you answer a question in class theres a good chance she will give you a 10 on the extra credit quizzes in recitation(out of 10). Very fair to the class. Stats is sometimes hard to understand, but she explains it well. Will help you if you ask.

Carrie is really nice but goes off on tangents about useless things. She moves really fast and does not show every single step while giving notes. She does give a lot of E.C. and reviews for the final. If you have any questions, ask her! Buy the Student Solutions book!!!!

Carrie is a great STATs teacher. She can go off tangent sometimes but she just wants to create a friendly environment. She tries her best to help you earn a good grade: provides great notes, does odd-numbered problems, gives out lots of extra credit, and provides practice tests which are basically the exam questions. It doesn't get any easier!!

I thought she was a pretty good teacher. She does talk about random stuff a lot, but if you go to class you should be able to do just fine. She is very fair with her tests, and doesn't make them too hard.

Very good teacher. However, this is the one class you must attend everyday. I don't think anyone who regularly ditched the class even came class to getting a passing grade. The fail rate is over 50% but for those who showed up, I think just about everyone got at least a B. Overall, she makes a difficult subject easy to understand.

I had zero interest in taking a Stats class, but she made it interesting to attend and made it understandable. She does go off on tangents and stories, but they're more entertaining than distracting. I missed a few classes here and there but was able to stay on course and get a good grade, so that's more up to the individual.

I was not looking forward to taking stats at all. i expected it to be super hard but carrie made it so easy. she's so helpful! explains everything and gives tons of examples for homework. tests are exactly like the practice test so if you study that you'll for sure get an A. def take stats with carrie!!

She makes Stats a class you can pass if you take notes, study the study guides, and take advantage of her office hours. I would recommend her to anyone taking STATS at NIU.

Best ever! Go to class, take notes, and go to office hours. I took this as a summer school class and couldn't have enjoyed it more. She is extremely helpful and wants everyone to pass.

She thinks she is funny. She is very mean unless you suck up to her and laugh at all her jokes. The class itself is not that bad. I hear she is the hardest stat teacher but she is not bad all you do is take notes in lecture so you have to show up otherwise you will miss a lot. Show up to friday classes because she gives out free answers to homework

Carrie is a WONDERFUL stats teacher. She cares so much that her students actually learn, that she stops every 15 minutes and asks if anyone has questions. Her test are all the same format, and the final is a combination of the previous tests. Some questions are the EXACT same as a previous test!!!!! I would strongly recommend taking her class!

She is really big on being fair so even though she doesn't take attendance she does a lot of extra credit for people in class and gives extra info during Friday classes. Her TAs are strict but this semester one of them held study sessions before every test which was really helpful. Overall a really nice lady who cares about her students success.

Carrie is a great teacher. Will do anything she can to pass her students. Some of her rules may seem a bit much, but understandable. Show up to class, use lab hrs and get help if you need it during the hard chapters. Other than that, I really enjoyed stats and her stories.

One of the easiest classes I've had. She does tell some good jokes that keep you awake, but if you are not mentally retarded in math, she will bore you to death. Easy A though, so worth taking.

Didnt like this class at all. Easy to some. However, on exam she makes it tricky. Her voice is irritating. She makes sure no one cheats! which is annoying the trouble she goes thru to randomly seat ppl during exams. I learned more from the TA's. Mandatory attendance if u want the notes, she hardly uses BlackBoard. Was just ok, not recommended.

She is hands down one of the best teachers in the Stats dept. She is a little quirky, but very nice and easy to understand. If you?re not good at math her classes will obviously be challenging for you, but if you must take a stats class, take her!.

I hate math, but then again STATS isn't too bad. Carrie is very intimidating, but her notes make everything so much easier to understand. Plus, she really prepares you for what will be on quizzes and exams with "subtle" hints.

Carrie was awesome! I actually had to take stats twice because I got a D the first time. She understands stats isn't every students favorite and tries hard to help everyone pass and be done. The second time around it clicked more and I got a B. Her notes are clear and she gives random extra credit for attendance. She's Funny and helpful

She is a great professor. BUT i will say that she teaches the class in a way that she thinks we've all had prior Stats classes. I had not so i had to work a little harder. Easy class still. HW is graded hard though. TESTS ARE EASY!!

carrie is one of the best stat prof. Shes really helpful. If you have a bad TA than good luck! Her Tests are super easy, theres 10 hw's 7 quizs and 10 excel hw and two test and a final.

Carrie is super understanding and she uses real life examples to help you learn the material. My advice is to study the practice exams and review her notes everyday for at least 30 minutes and you should be fine for the exams. The material is a bit difficult but just study hard afnd keep up with the material and you can easily get an A or B.

Carrie makes a relatively difficult class easy! You don't have to attend class, but don't expect her to repeat something because you missed it! Attendance in recitation is mandatory to take quizzes and turn in h/w. Math, in general, is hard for me and she made it enjoyable and doable! I'd highly recommend her to anyone!!

Attendance is mandatory in recitation to turn in homework and take weekly quizzes, but not in class. If you put in the work and make an honest effort, you'll do well in her class. Best teacher for this class. All you have to do is go to class, turn in homework and show up for the tests. Tests are pretty much the same as practice exams except different numbers obviously. I recommend this teacher in a heart beat.

Carrie is a wonderful teacher. She actually cares about her students! This was my second time taking stats, and I ended up with an A! She gives practice exams that are very helpful. I would recommend taking her if you need stats!

She is a good teacher BUT she does often get side tracked. I personally did not mind the off topic stories every so often because it gives you a brief break from note taking. Her tests do get tricky at test 3 and the final but she gives you plenty of study tips and practice exams

Carrie is great teacher. From what I know she is the clearest and easiest stats teacher at NIU. 50 points for homework 3 tests 100 points each. The second and third test are the hardest and a 150 point final. Class is not mandatory but she does randomly give extra credit for coming.If you have to take statistics take her!

Carrie is a great professor. Although attenence is not mandatory she only has in class notes for those who attend. (Which is great because she will go over homework problems). It can be very easy to fall behind so stay on top of your stuff or you'll be lost. She often talks about her boys so she keeps class interesting. Will take her again anytime.

Carrie is the best instructor you could ever get for stats. She believes in a "non mathematical approach". I almost failed MATH 110, but I got an A in Stat 208 because of the way she teaches. Lecture is super useful. There are over 100 extracredit points available. All quizzes are extra credit. It is almost impossible to fail this class

This class is not too terribly difficult and does not require a huge amount of time devoted to studying. She gives random pop quizzes in class so be sure to go. The most frustrating part about the class are the TA's. The tests are very similar to the practice tests so be sure to review them! She gives lots of extra credit!

Carrie is a great teacher. She is very understanding in almost any situation possible. She knows the book like the back of her hand, so she references it a lot, so always bring your book to class! She likes to have fun in class and tries to keep it interesting! I think her class is very fair, and would take her again.

She cares about her students, and that's clear from the way she teaches. Some of the material is tough, but if you talk with her after class, she's so helpful. She is probably the best stats teacher at niu considering she writes 95% of all the tests for stats. She doesn't mess around and you don't want to be on her bad side. If you upset her the sincerely apologize or you will have a bad time. Otherwise she is really nice and super helpful to all her students If they ask. Don't skip class.

As a person she is a little wacky BUT very nice. She comes off very strong but having taken this class with a different professor last year, she was way better of a teacher. She gives a lot of extra credit, homework is not graded to harshly. I am not at all a math person, but if I ever had to take this again I would choose her again.

Carrie is great. By far the best teacher I've had so far. Her lectures are always interesting, as she takes little breaks to make the class laugh with interesting stories. The stories never get in the way, as she can get back on track easily. Tests aren't too bad if you do what she asks. Extra credit is INSANE. Quizzes are extra credit. Take her!

Gives practice exams basically the same as the real thing. She even goes over how to do the practice exams in depth making the real exam really easy.

She tells the best stories to pass the time. The lectures can feel long sometimes, but most days they fly by. She gives you everything you need to pass the class-so show up! There is also a recitation that you need to go to so you can pass. That's where all the quizzes are taken and homework is turned in. She does not accept late work.

Professor Helmig will go down as one of the best. She not only makes lectures enjoyable and applicable but inspires an appreciation for statistics. I wish she could teach all my classes.

I took Carrie's class last semester and loved every second of it. She makes it enjoyable to be there, asks questions to make sure student's understand, and is always willing to help out. Also, she really appreciates students who come to class, and will show it by giving out homework answers. Stats isn't easy but its better through Carrie.

DO NOT SKIP CLASS. Great prof overall. Lectures go for the entirety of the allotted time usually. Rarely cancels class unless it is an emergency. STUDY.

I'm glad that I took this summer class with Carrie Helmig. She is fair and wants to see her students succeed. She expects students to participate and expects you to be prepared for class.

Carrie is awesome. One of the best teachers at NIU. For her stat 208 class ALL of her quizzes are EXTRA CREDIT (25 pts max). She also gives you another 10 extra points for answer questions and an additional 10 points for bringing in something related to stats. Also if you do the study guide for the exams(also extra) you have the exam in your hands

Loved the STATS208 Class I took from Carrie. I'm not the best math student, but she made stats easy and makes sure to explain EVERYTHING. If you pay attention to her and attend lecture, it will be hard for you to fail. Great teacher, I wold take a class of hers again, but stats has nothing to do with my major.

Loved taking STAT 208 with Carrie. She made the class easy and fun. You don't even need to attend lecture regularly to pass. If you do the homework you will pass.

Not good at math but managed to get an A. As long as you take notes and use the study guides and hw to practice for your exam you will do great. Most exams had the same questions that were on the practice exams . All exams are multiple choice so you lose out on partial points but there are several extra credit opportunities.

At first I was worried about how the class would go, but she turned out to be great! She grades tough, but it's more because she wants you to try. She's funny and likes friendly chatter. Attendance matters and there is a lot of homework, but she gives extra credit and is flexible on deadlines. I hated stats going in, but not any more. She's great!

I've never liked anything related to math up until I took a course with Carrie. She is a very understanding professor and actually cares about her students, unlike some professors. In lecture Carrie teaches all of the material and then does lots of examples, which is totally helpful so I would advice you go all lectures!

STATS 208 was one of the hardest classes I ever took but Carrie made it so easy to understand. If you're not good at math I would say take her , she is amazing!

Notes are well organized and easy to follow. Clearly states where her numbers come from. Practice exams to prepare you for the real thing (no curve balls). Uses Blackboard website heavily. Provides a formula sheet (or rather a packet) so you don't have to dig through examples to find the good stuff. This A.D.D student is happy ;)

Carrie is a great professor who was recommended to me by another one of her students. I love stats and she teaches you how to be able to understand everything you need to succeed. She also prepares you better than anyone else. We also get pizza for good test averages, so that's a plus!

While she can be a tough grader as long as you know your formulas the class itself isn't that hard. She is a genuinely fun professor who encourages you to work hard for your grade and feel confident for exams.

Everything is laid out cut and dry. Plenty of supplemental info on blackboard made by her. She is very helpful if you see her during office hours. It's just down to whether or not you study. Honestly stats isn't a hard class. the tests also look just like the study guides.

She is one of the few teachers who does notes by hand and never uses power point so you cannot look back on anything if you do not take notes. Clearly explains everything you need to know to pass the class. Lectures are well organized and detailed and because of this you honestly do not need the book. Lots of homework, but they help you prepare for tightly-timed exams.

Make sure you show up for class because she does not post her lectures online. Make sure you do her practice exams because they are similar to her exams. if majority of the class does not do it, she will not give the answers and she post hand out practice exams. During the class lecture, she writes down everything you need to know and have you copy what she is writing. She gives out extra credit for participation and sometimes for attendance. She is the one who writes the final for STAT 208 so she definitely knows what she is talking about.

She genuinely cares about your grade and her TA's are really really cool. GO TO RECITATION. If I went to all of them I would have landed a High B instead of a C+

Some people might not like her sarcasm/persona but she just tried to have fun and joke around to break lecture. She gives everything you need in order to pass hw, quizzes, and exams. She is an amazing stats teacher and should try to get her, she makes everything simple and straight to the point

Carrie is honestly a ton of fun. Her lectures are often weird, but always helpful. Where the textbook has a tendency to make everything seem incredibly complicated, she shines at breaking things down and showing you how simple they really are. If you are at all intimidated by stats, Carrie is the one you should take it with.

She explains concepts very well. She is great at simplifying them for understanding. The exams are only 20 questions and nothing has ever surprised me on an exam. Before taking this class, I had never received an A in any math class I ever taken in my entire life. Carrie is very funny but also very caring. Any questions I had after class she always answered and even wrote things down for me on a separate sheet to take home so I could understand. She offers PLENTY of extra credit as well.

Professor Carrie is one of the best professors Ive had at NIU. She truly cares about her students and doesnt want to see any of them struggle/fail. She is very accessible outside of class and offers PLENTY of extra credit. Make sure you go to recitation every week to take the quizzes, it will help boost your grade.

Carrie is a wonderful instructor. Her examples are relevant and always have phenomenal explanations. She is a very fair grader, and gives a lot of partial credit as long as you show your work. She assigns a good amount of homework for the class so that you are prepared for exams. I cannot rave enough about her teaching.

I took her class in fall of 2019 in person. I see a lot of bad reviews for her online classes. I liked this professor a lot and this class was a breeze. Complete the study guides and go to lecture for extra credit points and it is very difficult not to pass. Not sure if it works the same way for her more advanced classes but stat 100 was easy.

One of the kindest math dep professors who make every class hilarious while you get all your notes together. She has two versions of notes online, one of her personal ones as well as the regular notes. She helps students understand material, just ask in class because email takes more time! The chillest math prof by far too.

Prof. Helmig was a great teacher. Her statistics class was extremely easy to follow and understand in my opinion. Those that said bad things i feel just either didn't pay enough attention to class or just never took the time to understand it. The professor does talk about her family a lot, but it is usually in a metaphor relating to statistics.

I have sincerely enjoyed taking Professor Helmig's Stats course. You can tell that she is very passionate about the topic and uses a variety of funny examples which helps students understand the content. If you are going into a stats course, I would recommend choosing this professor.

besides her style of note taking i liked her class. she was nice and personable with most students that talked and participated in class. if you participated, she would give you extra credit. get ready for an exam heavy class, although you can bring your grade up with the quizzes and weekly homework assignments. she is overall a great teacher.

Her class format was really good. You do have to attend lecture for points but I think it is beneficial to attend because she simplifies concepts well. There are no surprises on the tests so as long as you study the practice exam and quizzes you will be prepared. As someone who has a hard time with math, she made it really easy to get an A.

She is the most caring professor I have met. She gives many extra credit assignments. She does her best to make the lecture interesting. The homework is online. Exams are in-person. She is the only professor who allows the usage of a formula sheet during exams. Choose her for Stat 100. Exam questions are similar to quiz or lecture questions.

I loved Carrie! She was super funny and a great teacher, she gave out extra credit all the time and did her best to help students pass. I didn't do too good on the exams and still managed to pass with a good grade. She was the only teacher I actually managed to learn any form of math from, if i needed another math class I'd only take hers.

I love carrie, she is the sweetest. She can get a little off topic sometimes but it all makes us laugh so that's okay. She gives you all the notes that you need. If I had to take another math classes I would only want her. This is coming from someone that hated math in high school, she also gives out extra credit so make sure you do it!

Dr. Helmig was an amazing professor. Her teaching was very elaborate and easy to understand, and she has a clear grading criteria. She also allows for extra credit points if students want a little boost to their grade. She was also pretty funny and made sure that we had a good classroom environment. Her class was one that I looked forward to.

Summer '24: Carrie is an awesome professor! Her lectures are great. She dumbs down the material so that it's easier to understand. She does get off track at times, but it adds fun to the course. The class is manageable. As long as you do your work, you'll be fine. Wish I had more classes with her. She makes the class simple, yet effective to learn.

I was scared to take this class online, but she made so fun and easy to understand. Everything was so clear and the way she made us connected some problems with life situations made it easier to understand. I will definitely take this class again. I would recommend it. She's the best math teacher I have ever had.

Carrie is a likable quirky professor. She can often ramble in class about unrelated things but I didn't mind because the class is pretty easy. Attendance points are based on notes so make sure to have a way to take notes and pay attention enough to write down the examples. There are LOTS of extra credit opportunities!

One of the best teachers I've had at this school. She does the best she can to make it easier for her students to understand the material and points them in the right direction to get the help they might need. She does her best to get every student involved during lecture. She asks her students if there is any way that we think she can improve in.

Really awesome teacher; Made a pretty hard class really simple, easy to understand, and a lot of fun. I took the class over the summer so there was less students than a normal semester but she was very personal and inclusive with every student and made the class feel like a family. Makes sure everyone understands the concepts before continuing.

Honestly, as a transfer student, she was the best teacher I've had this semester. She really made an effort to make class fun along with to actually make sure you understand the material even if you're not good at math. She gives plenty of chances for extra credit and extra points and plenty of opportunities honestly, she was amazing. I loved her.

My one complaint about her is her ability to write tests. There is far too much content on her exams with not enough time, so be prepared to work quickly.
