Unhelpful lectures just copied from textbook. Expects that you learn above and beyond the homework for quizzes. Made clear that her intent for the first exam was that it be at such length that only half of the class would be able to finish it.
Very helpful! All you have to do is ask. She is not a school teacher. You need to use some initiative in her class.
She's a grade nazi, I'll leave it at that.
Very helpful, very friendly, good instructor. She is suprisingly intelligent, despite her humble demeanor.
What an awesome, enthusiastic prof. Her lectures are very clear and engaging, and she makes abstract theoretical physics something the whole class can understand. Outside of class, she is more than willing to help students. Very reliable.
Amazing class. Very clear, efficient teaching. Not difficult, but interesting and challenging material. She really teaches it well.
Great at leading class discussions, and as a consequence, succeeded in getting people engaged with the material. Even though this was an intro class, she didn't water anything down, which was a relief.
Carrie will be a great prof one day. She's really in tune w/ the level of understanding that low div. undergrads are running at. Extremely helpful 1 on 1 and her lectures are always fun because she encourages discussion and facilitates it well. Thumbs up.
Clear, kind, smart, allows lots of feedback. She rocks!!!
Generally willing to help but not very helpful responses to students questions.
Super great prof. Very smart, approchable for people who are interested in learning, and helpful in class and in office hours. Definitely recommend taking any classes with her.
Excellent prof. She took a really hard and potentially boring class and made it interesting and made a good grade attainable. I would definately take another class with her. I dreaded the class before taking it but it ended up being a good challenge that was worth it.
Asked to fill in on short notice, did really well. Exceedingly helpful, generally very clear. The class was easy for the first 90%, but the last 10% was a killer. Combined with it being crunched in, and not fun. So overall very good, but due to unplanned teaching here the schedule was a bit off.
She makes potentially difficult material easy to understand. Very clear and good lecture notes. Marking is done fairly. Her only downfall is she does not answer questions in class well.
TAKE A CLATT CLASS! I would never miss a class. This professor proves her extreme knowledge not by steaping in confusing terms, but by breaking down difficult material for students to comprehend. So helpful outside of class! extremely friendly, and funny! "Anything you can do, I can do meta" Ha!
Worse teacher ever. Not very conducive to other people's beliefs and totally unclear and inconsistent. Nice lady, but when it came to teaching logic, it's just not meant for her.
what IS refreshing is a prof who acknowledges her own limits. klatt's speciality is phil. of science/phil. of physics(spacetime & quantum), yet she also teaches (fills in for) logic and plato. she 'learns' along with you, but with the acumen of a professional philosopher - she shows you how to learn
Carrie Klatt is nothing without Keith. We need to be giving every bit of credit to our Keith. That man is a marking MACHINE. So, to sum up: easiest class ever, Keith's simply amazing, take this class.
It's good that she acknowledges her limits. But that's just a nice way of saying she isn't qualified to teach Plato. It's a 300-level required class, the department should never have let her teach it. That said, she did her best job and I can't fault her for her efforts.
she's awesome!! was petrified to take logic, and I think I will end up with an A- in it....she teaches on a level that anyone can understand.
easy class, great teacher. her section is sooooo much easier than Yap's section. assignments are only worth 20%, opposed to 40% in Yap's. Good notes in class, explains everything you need. practice exams are very helpful. great teacher, easy course. recommended
relies alot on textbook, fair marker. very accessible outside of class.
Such a connected and patient teacher. The class wasnt easy but she taught it as best as I thought she could. Never missed a class, always available for help and dealt with disruptive students very appropriatly.
What of the best classes I ever took. It opened my eyes to the beautiful world of philosophy. Dr. Klatt is a great teacher who keeps you engaged and brings relevant topics to class. She's also smoking hot.
Carrie is probably one of the best profs I've ever had. She takes her time to explain things over and over again if you go to her for help. Symbolic logic still makes no sense to me but at least there is hope if you take the course with Carrie.
Very very reasonable and fair! Assignments are really easy and theres not an overwhelming amount of work in the class. Easy to understand and will give you a break from time to time. :D
Klatt is great at teaching logic, but phil of science is another thing. She made what had been an extremely interesting topic (to me) utterly dull. She didn't encourage speculation or discussion and the class was mostly dead silent.
Great teacher. She was really interesting to listen to and added lots to the class. Tests need textbook understanding, which I found hard, since the texts were an extremely difficult read for a 1st year philosophy student. But I pulled through with a B+.
Great professor when it comes to distilling concepts into simple and clear explanations.
Great, great teacher! If you attend class constantly, there will be no need to use your textbook at all. She gives you the time you need to understand the concepts. Fair marker. Makes philosophy incredibly interesting. I highly recommend this teacher!
She is very approachable and always give you time when you're struggling. Replies email quickly and very patient. You just need to follow her instructions. Highly recommended!
I LOVE HER!!! She's just like how the other students described. I really enjoyed her class eventho the context gets difficult at times. TAKE HER CLASS!!
I just habe to say that Klatt is one of the most concise and crystal clear profs i have ever had. You do not need the text book. I think i opened it twice in order to do homework and i came out with an A (you do not have to write the final exam if you like your mark WOOO. There is a bit of homework but it really helps.
Dr. Klatt really is a great educator. She will go beyond what is necessary to ensure her students do well and feel prepared for exams. I took both her summer classes and have never experienced a teacher so available and willing to help. Further, she is an extremely kind person who truly wants to see her students succeed even beyond her classroom.
Took logic with her, she was alright, but had some pretty unclear questions and sometimes even provided mistaken examples. (Most people weren't aware, since this was an intro class) Very reluctant to give marks he she had to admit she was wrong, but would if you sucked up to her and asked nicely. Stopped going to class 2/3 through, still got an A.
Professor Klatt is absolutely INCREDIBLE. She wants all of her students to do well, and gives you every chance to do so. Her homework assignments help, her marking scheme is fair, and she is always available for office hours/ returns emails at lightning speed. All in all- she's freakin awesome. Take phil 201 if you can!!
Prof was excellent. Has an awesome and fair syllabus. How well you do in this class truly reflects the amount of effort you choose to put in to it. She made he concepts crystal clear if you don't get it you aren't trying hard enough. Go to every class because you only get partial notes online.
Seemed to care about students and the material. Relatively approachable, although she doesn't seem to enjoy being argued with. Her lectures had almost nothing you couldn't find in the text, though.
Prof. Klatt works hard so that you understand the material and get a good grade in the class. The grading structure is very flexible (you don't necessarily have to take the final). There is no textbook. Prof. Klatt met with students during reading break and holds lengthy office hours to go over questions with students. She goes above and beyond
For anyone considering 201 or 203, Klatt is ideal for both these courses. Fantastic teacher. Wants students to succeed and allows every opportunity for them to.
Took her for both Phil 201 and 203. Very easy class if you get it. Final exams are optional. There are assignments due for almost every class, but they are short and easy, and she takes your best 10 out of 15. Interesting material, and an easy A+
Phil 201 is SO interesting and Dr. Klatt is awesome! She really wants you to do well and is clearly passionate about what she does. I had never taken Philosophy before, and now am addicted. Can't wait to take Phil 203 with her. Didn't use the textbook at all ... blackboard assignments require you to pay attention in lectures, and really helped!
Very good at telling you everything you should know in her lectures and what you should do on assignments/tests. Unfortunately does not give much in the way of comments handing back assignments and tests. A clear teacher who is easy to get a good mark from if you show up.
This was my first PHIL class and I found it really interesting. Dr Klatt's lectures were well laid out and interesting to attend. The textbook was actually fairly interesting to read. Test formats were given to us so we knew exactly what to expect on test days. I would definitely recommend taking this course!
Great class! Prof. Klatt is really good. She explains the test formats just as they're going to be and gives you a practice test before each one. Class isn't mandatory, she puts notes online, BUT does leave blanks for the important stuff, so if you can, go to class! Assignments really help too. Looking forward to Phil203!
super clear and really knows what she's talking about. she's also very helpful and is always open to questions.
Dr. Klatt was a great teacher willing to help you at all costs. I did not do well in her class but it is probably my fault. It has an assignments every week but they are fun! Even if u don't understand. Lots of work and studying!
Carrie is a lovely person, and very good at explaining things in a clear and consise manner! Assignments every week were very good for practicing, as well as practice tests. Excellent, fun and GPA boosting class. Relates to real-world alot! I highly recommend this professor!
Really kind and patient prof, I thought the content was really hard to understand and subjective-Either your thinking too much into it or not enough. Well organized course, TA's office hours are super helpful-nobody ever goes to them so it's like having a private tutor help you with everything you don't understand, her office hours get really busy.
Very simple and straightforward class. Attend lecture, do the homework and use the textbook to reinforce what you learned in lecture and you will get an A. Very interesting material, and Dr. Klatt is incredibly clear in her explanations. Highly recommended.
Great Prof. I did not even open the textbook. I only attended lectures, and finished all the quizzes and review tests; A- in the end.
Goes a little too fast during explanations but otherwise a good prof. Don't take this class thinking it's a blow-off class.. it requires more work than you expect!
Klatt is an amazing prof! Go to class and take good notes. Complete all the assignments and you will do well. Definitely one of the fewer classes in university where you will get an A+ with minimal effort. I also highly recommend asking for help (TA or herself)!
Great Prof! She did an excellent job making a boring subject bearable. Very clear and thorough in her explanations.
Great prof! Well organized class and makes lectures interesting by adding a tad of humour ever once in a while. Her tests were extremely fair and the practice tests were the exact same format as the tests so they were great prep. If I had to say one negative, she can sometimes go through the slides quickly but that is all.
Carrie is an awesome teacher, and the way she runs the course is great. If you keep up with the assignments, you will do well in the course! I finished with an A and I think I used the textbook once. Take this course :)
AMAZING Prof. If you're hesitating to take her class DO IT. Only catch is you must do the homework and put in the effort or you will not do well. Symbolic Logic is a lot like math where if you put in the effort, get extra help, and do everything that's asked, the tests are a breeze! Would definitely take a class from Klatt again!
Carrie is awesome! Always willing to help out students, went and saw her in her office hours, such a fair prof!
She goes over the examples and things so fast. I was listen but she's just SUPER HARD TO FOLLOW. Classes were fine at the beginning, but after the midterm she always makes me feel like she's in a hurry of going somewhere important. We couldn't copy down her notes if she keeps up her pace, obviously can't understand and study!! Please SLOW DOWN!
Abundant assignments almost TWICE A WEEK! And the questions in almost EVERY assignment are much more difficult than her examples in class! Can you believe you will need to write 48 lines for a question on categorical derivation?!
Dr. Klatt is one of the best professors I've had in my 4 years at UVic. This course had nothing to do with my major, but she made it extremely interesting and gave students every opportunity to understand and get help. Tests and assignments were more than fair. I would take another course with her in a second.
Attend every single class and you'll get an A for sure.
Doctor Klatt was absolutely phenomenal. Her ability to simplify complexities and skill at instilling ideas was unparalleled. Philosophy in neither my major nor required by my major. I had no idea what to expect in this class but it turned out to be high grade in quality mainly due to Klatts hallmark teaching practices. Take this course.
Carrie Klatt is one of the best profs I've ever had at Uvic! She is nice and her lectures are straight forward. The class content is not hard to follow and she lets your redo your lowest test! Amazing prof
Carrie is an amazing professor. Very respectful and helpful. Every class was like celebration. Loved her lectures and how inspirational she was.
Good class and good prof
Professor Klatt is fantastic at answering questions. If you ever don't understand something, she does a great job helping. It's clear she really knows a lot about her field. The assignments really helped internalize the material and boost my grade. I didn't use the textbook much at all. I've never taken a phil class and this was a good start to it.
Excellent instructor, and clearly very intelligent. With five exams and 15 assignments, however, you'll probably work for your grade (the course content is fairly easy though). Dr. Klatt's instruction made the course content very enjoyable. If you go to office hours be prepared for other students skipping ahead of you in line!
Carrie must be the best professor I have ever met so far, super helpful with the course stuff, gives many office hours, she ACTUALLY wants you to do well . The course content is brandly-new to most of students, however, it is not hard to study, just put some effort and visit Carrie in her office hours, you should have no problem to get an A.
Great prof! She explains things very well and is very clear. Also really helpful in office hours. You need to go to class since she uses fill in the blank notes and the material makes so much more sense when she explains it. The textbook is optional and I got an A without it so that's a nice money saver.
she always give some clear formula before the tests. Student can get a easy A in this course. A nice teacher and a nice course.
Super clear, fair and kind prof, with excellent drop-in support/office hours. Easy to do well if you keep up with all assignments and go to lecture. If you fall behind- get caught up in drop-in hours quick! Tests are not specifically cumulative but do rely a lot on past content. Save yourself that trouble and go to class!
Carrie was AWESOME! Had her for critical thinking. She gave perfect examples for everything. There were 15 assignments in total (usually 2 per week) but they were easy, and she took your best 10. Gives out nearly identical practice tests, and thoroughly goes over them the class before a test (5 in total). Go to class and you will do well!
I absolutely love this professor. The way she grades you is you have 5 tests, + your best 10 out of 15 MC assignments. Her explanations were crystal clear. I never cracked the textbook open - don't bother buying it. If you skip class you'll have a hard time doing well but if you go to class you'll get an easy A. Would recommend this prof to anyone!
Obviously the best professor I ever had in Uvic. She is a genius for sure, explanation were really clear. Super helpful with everything single thing in this class. She also gives you practice tests which can help you to get an easy A. If you are in Uvic, you must get a chance to take her class. You will love her for sure !!!
a very nice professor :)
Marking schemes are fair and the class content is presented in a very engaging manner. Also Klatt is a genius (even if this is not immediately obvious) and incredibly competent at teaching. The class is packed, so expect a lot of student demands. There should be lots of opportunities to do well.
Carrie Klatt is one of my favorite profs at Uvic. She made this class really interesting for me and enjoyable. She gives clear criteria so you can do well if you put in the work.
Great prof. Clear, helpful, respectful, and very smart. Do NOT take 203 as an "easy A" class, unless you have a math brain. I found it extremely difficult (was taking stats at the same time- found 203 way harder). She does give lots of assignments, but they prepare you really well for tests. Also took 201 with her-would recommend that one over 203.
by far the most caring proff I've had she makes so much time to help and explain things and is constantly trying to help her student excel. i found that 201 was better overall
One of my favorite prof at UVic! She's super clear on explaining things! She also provides sufficient practices for u. There are pretty much work to do, but it prevents u from doing everything the night before tests. I would take her class again.
Dr. Klatt really cares about her students, and explains everything really well. If you're going to take this course take it with her. You won't regret it. The course it self is a little demanding the online assignments are a pain.
Dr. Klatt is an awesome professor and a great lecturer. She makes you want to come to class, is clearly passionate about philosophy, and is very helpful. Attendance is a must and a lot of the learning is done in class. Be warned that Phil 201 is not a super easy elective, it does require work, but very interesting course content. Would take again!
Klatt is one of the best profs I have ever had. I took this course in the summer and has been nothing but a pleasure to have her as a prof. Do the assignments and you will get an A.
I 100% recommend taking her philosophy 201 it is by far one of the best courses I have taken at UVIC. Her lectures are very manageable and her tests are more than fair. If you attend class you will know exactly what to expect on the tests. She really cares about her students too! Lots of added help if needed. Plus she is respectful. "the best prof"
Carrie was a very kind teacher who made a lot of resources available to learn the material. If you're planning on not attending lectures you will not do well. Would not suggest as an easy elective but worth it to learn basic logic, make better arguments, and analyze arguments easily.
No final exam, only tests that aren't cumulative in material. AMAZING lectures as she's very concise so there's not much extra reading needed. The assignments she gives are great preps for her tests.
Dr Klatt teaches a course to students that are literally from the other side of campus, but she manages to stimulate discussions and participation. Although not entirely her fault, there's a lot of unnecessary material in ENGR297. The group project was great. She thinks that theoretical physics and engineering are similar, which is pretty adorable!
If you're looking for an easy boost to the GPA -- take Philosophy 201 with Dr. Klatt! I got a 92 without buying the textbook and looking over the practise tests during my 10 minute walk to class. Very intelligent person as well, she specialises in the philosophy of science and quantum theory. I highly recommend chatting with her at office hours!
Was told this would be an easy A, and i can see how it would be if you are an abstract thinker!! I found the course to get easier as it went on, but i really had to work for my grade. Prof was good. LOTS of assignments given for marks/prep for midterms!
Klatt is a great teacher who gives her students every opportunity to do well. She's generous with grading and gives plenty of opportunities for bonus marks. Online assignments are very nicely set up with plenty of extra learning resources. 3 weeks left in the course and I'm sitting at a 97% having used no textbook & very little studying all. 10/10
Carrie is a great teacher and puts in lots of time to help if you put in the time to see her. Lots of assignments but they're all useful for preparing for tests.
Carrie is a great prof and Phil 201 isn't the hardest class. The notes don't make much sense if you don't attend so be sure to go to class. Practice tests show you exactly what's going to be on the actual test. 15 assignments (only top 10 count for your grade) and 5 tests, no final. Overall a great class!
Took 201 with Carrie and loved it, decided to take 203 for fun and it was so much harder. Carrie had many office hours and tutorials available for students and was always there to help. I wouldn't have gotten through without her, as she genuinely wanted students to do well.
Out of all professors I had at UVic throughout my 4 years, Carrie Klatt was without a doubt the best and most impactful instructor I had. Professional, funny, caring, she is the benchmark of the kind of professor a real educational system deserves - even now that I'm in the professional world I keep applying what I learned from her in this class.
Superb teacher.
Explains difficult topics well and gives lots of assignments to be able to learn the material. the practice tests are just like the real ones and she always makes extra time to see students and help them as well as giving extra practice. Posts skeleton notes so going to class is a must
Critical thinking was a great course! She was a awesome teacher and explains the topic very well. The test she makes are very fair.
If you're taking PHIL201, take it with Klatt. There is no final exam, but there are 5 tests. The tests are really easy though if you pay attention in class, do the required HW assignments, and a little bit of studying. She gives lots of extra info in lecture that isn't posted on coursespaces so definitely attend her lecture.
Decent prof . sense of humor is a big plus. 8/10 approachable. Overall very plesant experience and workload was not bad at all. Just make it a point to never skip class and do all assignments. The assignments are a piece of cake if you go to class. Alternatively Audrey Yapp is a great prof too for 203 not sure if she teaches 201 though.
This is a boring class but you learn some useful things. Carrie is super funny and uses relevant and engaging arguments to demonstrate the different concepts. There are 5 non-cumulative tests, and 10 online quizzes that make up your grade. You have to go to class to get the notes, but if you do it's an easy course. You learn some cool stuff too.
Klatt is an absolutely awesome professor. Her class is an easy A/A+. She structures the course for students who put in the work to do well. There are 5 tests, 15 assignments (that help you to study for the tests) (+only grades the 10 best), and NO final exam. Make sure that you do the assignments and practice tests with a friend.
Dr Klatt is extremely engaging, respectful and quick-witted. I strongly suggest that you attend all of her lectures. She is very welcoming and helpful both inside and outside of class. Although I did buy the textbook for Phil 201, I rarely used it since Dr Klatt provided enough practice questions online.
Took as a 3 week condensed summer course. prof gives clear lectures, if you go to class you do NOT need the textbook (I didn't buy one). Use the drop in study group resource to ace the assignments. Also she allowed me to write a makeup test without issue and boosted my test grade when I went to her office hours to ask to go over the exam.
Dr. Klatt is an engaging lecturer who makes the course material enjoyable. Very accessible outside office hours; she is in her office at the same time of the course-sanctioned study sessions. One of my top five favorite professors I've had during my degree.
Took Phil201 just to fill a requirement but because of Klatt's amazing teaching style, I actually became interested in the topic. Gives lots of little assignments that help prepare you for the tests, and is the first Proff that I really feel cares about her students. She has a great sense of humour and is some kind of genius for sure.
CARRIE IS THE BOMB!!! She's amazing, I took this class as an elective and then took the second part. She's so funny, engaging and she actually cares about the students. I highly recommend taking her class but it is NOT an easy A.
She knew her stuff! she was also very accessible outside of class. She is more than willing to give you extra help even repeated extra help if you are really struggling. She expects you to know what she teaches well. There is no 'kind of getting it' in phil 201 you need to GET IT! to pass those tests so take it if you are redy to dedicate yoursel
I took PHIL201 with Dr Klatt and loved it so I took a 3 week long PHIL203 with her in June. Hardest course I have had so far, but also one of the best ones. I found the optional textbook to be very helpful. Attend all lectures, go to office hours, do the assignments and practice tests. You will have fun, and your mark will reflect your effort.
You must use the textbook and go to the lecture for Phil 201 if you are someone who needs a lot of practice. She is an amazing professor. 201 is hard! its also very interesting. She knows her stuff quite well. Favourite thing about her is she is always willing to give extra help! This was the most interesting class I have taken.
Dr. Klatt is everything a prof should be. Thorough and engaging lectures, super helpful and approachable in office hours, and CRAZY smart. The material in 201 is not super easy, but Dr. Klatt does her absolute best to make sure everyone understands. Definitely take this class if you want to write the LSAT! Can't say enough good things about her!!
Dr. Klatt really understands the material and how best to explain it to students. However, it is by no means an easy course and do not think that this is an easy GPA booster. Take the course only if you have a serous interest in the material. All in all it was a really good but challenging course.
She really knows her stuff! She's super good at explaining the material and is very fair if your think you deserved more on a test she will let you argue any question! Overall such a great prof, would recommend
Carrie is a really organized, polite, professional and respectable prof! She's very fair and considerate of her students and going to class is worth while because she is good at explaining concepts. She's also great at public speaking and she's actually kind of funny too. Great quality professor and would highly recommend taking any of her courses!
My best advice: go to office hours if you get a poor mark on a test! I did that for almost every test handed back, and each time my mark was boosted by 5% or more. While this wasn't a super easy A, using office hours is really helpful and Klatt is so kind and understanding. She made lectures super interesting and hard content a little easier!
Carrie was an awesome prof, she was so accommodating for my extremely busy sports schedule and gave me multiple extensions on tests. The class itself was quite challenging, but seeing her during her office hours definitely helped a bunch!!
Critical thinking is a difficult course. She moves quickly through the content so it can be really overwhelming. Unless you are a natural at translating nonsense english sentences into cryptic code, I would HIGHLY recommend coming to class. I took it accelerated over the summer and found the deep dive into the content beneficial. Good Luck.
Carrie is amazing. She is caring, detailed in her explanations and very accomodating. Her resources are so well-done you don't even need the textbook. She takes a lot of tough material and explains it so well. Wish I had more profs like her.
Klatt Is one of my favorite Lecturers. Once you get the material its easy to get a good grade. But you have to put time and energy into it. Class is heavy on assignments but they all help solidify your learning and prepare you for the tests. NO PAPERS :) Klatt is accessible with frequent office hours and is happy to arrange times outside of those
Unreasonably hard MC questions on tests. Gives a lot of useless information. Engineering GPAs should not be lowered based on a failure to memorize what Francis Bacon thought about Mumford's opinions.
One of my favourite professors yet
One of the best professors i've had. She was great at making difficult content understandable.
She is definatly knowledgeable and can teach the only issue is the format of the course gives you very little time to get to know the material before you are tested. It is a full test every other week and every lecture has a quiz to go with it. She is abysmal at responding to emails which is my biggest dissapointment.
tough course but Dr. Klatt is always willing to go over confusing concepts and re-explain them in a way that makes sense. Her drop-in/office hours are also extremely helpful. Expect to put a lot of effort into keeping on top of the workload as there are assignments nearly every week (marks for best 10/15) + 5 tests spaced roughly 2 weeks apart
You need to go to every single lecture or else you will fall behind. She really cares for her students and would explain concepts if you put in the effort to go ask her during her office hours. Her lectures were really well structured and she is a really good speaker. The 5 midterms were pretty annoying as it was almost every two weeks.
If you go to class you'll do fine. If you miss a class be sure to go to office hours because it is very easy to get behind. She posts slides, but they are not beneficial to study from because she adds important context during lectures.
The content of this class is difficult, but I liked the format and she is an amazing teacher. She really knows her stuff and can explain things in a very clear way. If you miss too many classes it will be very difficult to catch up, as she doesn't post the full lecture notes online. No midterm/final but there are online quizzes 2x a week so keep up
Looking back i could have done way better in this class. Honestly just go to class and stay on top of the material - you can easily get a solid mark. no midterms, papers or finals just 5 tests and the best 10 of 15 quizes. Class itself wasn't dry either. Dr. Klatt is interesting and really nice, good class to take if you need to fill out a schedule
She was my favourite teacher this year, made hard concepts easy to understand and when you asked a question she never got frustrated. Bought a textbook but didn't end up using it. She tells you exactly what is on the test so it is easy to get a good mark as long as you take the time to really understand.
Don't do it if you don't have to. Prof seems nice but never answers emails or helps outside of asynchronous lectures. Quizzes every other day and note heavy (although pdf). Topic seem easy asf until you take the test or quiz.
lectures aren't the most useful, prob better off to just do readings if she gave a textbook. example q.s r just useful overall.
I have an A average across all my classes. This statement is unfortunately true. This teacher is rude, egotistical and immature. You are never allowed to disagree, make an opposite point or ask for further clarification. She teaching style is "I am teacher you are student" everything I say has to be right and therefore you are wrong.
I am normally a straight A student. I have consistently gotten low grades in this class despite doing all of the lectures, homework, and practice assignments. I find that her tests are much harder than her assignments. Even though I practice all the material she gives us access to, I always feel blindsided on the tests. Not worth the stress, avoid!
Online class with this prof has been literal hell. No matter how much you study her exams are always much harder than the practice exams or assignments. She needs to be more considerate that this is a completely online class and adjust the tests to that knowing full well that majority of us need this one class to attain our degree.
Just take the math class instead, her tests make it impossible to succeed unless you want to be the next Plato.
The prof is ok, but this is a good class *only* for non-phil majors. I's not a bad english class. Just know that there is nothing "deep" about this class; if u r looking for the same genre but with some "deep" meaning/complexity then go for PHIL 201. I was fine with the prof, but rly disliked the class content and/or things she chose to teach phil
Professor Klatt is very kind and gives straightforward explanations of the material. There are many assignments, and 4 tests, but no final exam. However, I found the last test to be very difficult and somewhat unfair.
Im on my 2nd sem at uvic, and this is so far my favourite professor Ive had here. Most professors Ive had dont make information clear, and dont make lectures interesting. I dont even care for philosophy yet its the only class I enjoy doing homework for.
I loved taking phil 201 this semester. Prof. Klatt was very responsive and understanding when i needed extensions on assignments due to being sick and catching up with my ADHD. She was very responsive and walked me through tough assignments/questions and I found her lectures to be very easy to watch, follow, and understand and tests were easy.
The material is relatively interesting, and I'm sure she would be a professor if school wasn't online-- but this class is very difficult to do well in online. Grades are only based on multiple-choice quizzes and four multiple-choice tests, but there is more than one possible answer for many questions which makes it very difficult to do well.
this course has interesting content, but the exams are disproportionately more difficult compared 2 the practic.e even after doing all the practice assign i still get blindsided by the exams.
Prof is kind and accessible. TA Ryan was amazing. I took this over summer as a condensed AND an asynchronous class. It was VERY challenging. I did great on the quizzes but found the tests WAY harder. I barely passed this class. This is the first D I have ever gotten. I have a 3.5 and do VERY well. This class kicked my butt though.
I think everyone should take Phil 201 as it teaches some really important things. As a condensed course it was definitely more challenging but still very doable. You have to work hard and really do all the practice because professor Klatt's tests are very difficult and many questions are definitely designed to test if you've been paying attention.
She teaches concepts fairly well, although I feel this course would have greatly benefitted from being in person. The difficulty of this class lies in her tests, she tries to make them extra hard but they're really just extremely subjective. The first test is known to be particularly difficult; studied extremely hard and recieved an 80%.
Prof. Klatts class was overall okay, but a little frustrating at times. I found the material to be very confusing sometimes, there were quite a few cases of subjective or contradictory information. I found that some of the questions and answers could be vague & subjective to opinion & I found myself having to guess between two correct answers.
I love Klatt. I worked really hard in this course and my grade reflects that. This is not an easy class. The last test was the most difficult for me (a big jump from the practice tests). Here's how I succeeded: rewatched lectures, redid assignment questions, did group review sessions, did both practice tests, and watched the assignment answer vids.
This class was tough but I'm glad I stuck to it. Because there are so many quizzes, you can make up for bad grades. However the order in which we learned things didn't make sense, I felt like I should have learned stuff from a lecture for the previous quiz. It was tough. She's a clear lecturer though, her class was just rough.
Professor Klatt was mediocre, at best. Personally, I found her lectures to be long-winded and often contradictory, and it was difficult to get ahold of her through email (ie, she never responded). Whatever extra help zooms she held were limited to around 10 people. Would not take a class with her again. (Also: no final but tests counted for a lot.)
Very subjective and contradictory. Also uses political examples a lot which lean heavily on one side which is not a good thing for a instructor.
Not my favourite, she's a bit old-fashioned in both her technological skill and teaching style. Her style of running a class is good, and marking/assignments/quizzes are very fair. She does seem to show bias towards certain topics, despite it being a course where bias is a central topic. A bit ironic, isn't it?
This course kicked my butt. Out of all the courses I've taken at UVic, this was certainly one of the most difficult because it's like learning an entirely new language and set of skills. You really have to study and grind the material and do practice questions over and over again until you get it right. I came out with new skills I'll use every day
The class would be easier if you come to it with no baseline for logic in your head. Any sort of preconceptions of what should make logical sense will get in your way and make it really hard to make sense of the course. Not much of a philosophy class, pretty much English mixed with a math class mixed with coding.
I found this course pretty difficult, it's almost more like a math class than a philosophy class but it is quite interesting. Professor Klatt was great, you really do need to pay attention in class or the tests will be very difficult. I think many of the bad reviews are because the material is challenging and not because Klatt is a bad teacher.
Dr. Klatt rocks. Straightforward and effective, I wish more of my classes were like hers. 10/10.
The reason I disliked this class is partly because it's a stupid class chock full of irrelevant content but also because the lectures and notes are very dry. The grading is fair for the written assignments but the quizzes are almost incomprehensible in terms of what questions are asked. The exams are extremely long and heavy on memorization.
The content in this class was very hard, it was more like a math class and didn't seem that relevant, however, Carrie did her best to explain the concepts very well. She also made herself very available in terms of office hours so I recommend going to those as it's very beneficial in understanding the content.
Dr. Klatt explained topics clearly and provided many practice opportunities for material covered. The content itself was quite tricky and definitely challenging but she did very well to explain and break down concepts. She was also kind enough to allow for extra marks given on final test if you emailed her with explanations.
Carrie is amazing when it comes to online classes. Her lectures are easy to understand and she provides all the notes you would need for her exams. You can always reach her thruogh email if you don't understand something on assignments and gives easy to understand examples. Highly recommend her if you just want to dip your toes into philosophy!
Unclear grading structure. Philosophy should be subjective and yet there is a correct answer? Why is it multiple choice for a subjective material? When you need help it can takes days to a week to receive a response. This should not be an online course
I took this class online with Carrie. I was surprised a lot of people didn't do well on the first exams. Watch the lectures and rewatch the lectures. Sometimes the content on quizzes are harder than what is in the lecture, but she gives you plenty of practice material for no grades to get the concepts down. I'm really enjoying this class so far.
This class was a challenge, but Professor Klatt's clear explanations and availability for extra help made it manageable. Using resources like Unstuckstudy and the practice questions helped me succeed.
Carrie is a good professor, I've taken two courses with her and her lectures are decent, workload is reasonable (a bit heavy), and expectations are clear. Course organization is also fantastic. She's always rubbed me slightly the wrong way though, hard to tell why but she's just slightly grating. Might just be me.
If you don't love yourself, take this course.
This was the hardest class I've ever taken. It made no sense and no matter how hard me and my friends studied, we always got low grades on the tests. Don't believe anyone on Redditt saying this class was easy. Her lectures rarely made sense and it was almost like if she said one thing during the lecture, it would mean the opposite on the test.
Easiest course I took by far. Took this course as an elective to lighten my semester and it did just that. Would highly recommend for anyone coming from comp sci and wanting an easy A.
My one piece of advise would be to not take this class. As an elective this took up majority of my time and the tests were beyond difficult as well as it felt like the online lecture didnt even align with what was going on in the tests. The first unit may be the worst thing i have ever done. This is not worth the many mental breakdowns.
Very straightforward course format. Dr. Klatt explains everything thoroughly in the lectures, and the tests are very fair. The course is very interesting—slightly tricky at first but gets easier. I learned more than I expected! Dr. Klatt also has plenty of help sessions and opportunities for extra support.
She was a great prof for this online course! Made it very easy to understand the material and her videos were very helpful. The exams were harder than expected though.
Dr. Klatt was a great lecturer, made complex topics easy to understand with lots of examples. Grade consists of a bunch of little quizzes (the worst 3 are dropped) and tests are fair. Everything is online and asynchronous/open book. Make sure you have a good reference sheet beside you for tests so you dont waste time skimming notes
Her lectures are confusing, it's like she says one thing on her lecture and notes but then the tests are different. I've been having a hard time understanding what the outline is for what she wants in the answers. I feel like it's not really clear. Study hard if you have to take this course. If you don't have to take it don't bother
There were very few instances where the lectures actually reflected what you would be tested on, there is a bit of a disconnect between what is being lectured vs what is being tested. This made it very hard to prepare for tests. Lots of opportunity for office hours though, she is very nice and you can tell that she cares about her students.
By far one of the best professors Ive had at UVic. After her classes you will be thinking differently, she is also really accommodating and the workload is not that bad
Really helpful in office hours to guide you through any worries you have in class. Take advantage of the office hours and you will do good!
Course delivery wasn't as effective as I'd hoped and I found her inaccessible
Awesome prof. She gives very clear explanations
Took the online course over the summer. I found her lectures connected quite clearly with the assignments and tests, and I'm not too sure where other students found that disconnect to come from. Our only communications were over email, but I found Dr Klatt to be personable and understanding in correspondence.
Incredible levels of political bias coming from the prof, which is excessively evident in her assignments, midterms, and quizzes. Questions are posed to the effect of "explain why my political opinion is correct" vs. "discuss viewpoint X and your take on it". Made the class frustrating as it felt like stepping over myself for a grade I need to pass
I think there is a slight disconnect between what we're taught and what is tested but she would highlight in lectures what to know for the quizzes/tests. I get that the quizzes and tests are harder because they're all online and open book. There are office hours if you need extra help. If you do the assigned work in my experience you will succeed
I loved her. She is so passionate about what she teaches and she makes lectures super interesting even though I have never had interest in anything ethics or philosophy related she found a way to keep a whole class of engineers engaged. I hope I get taught by her again.
Phil 201 was an interesting and fairly easy course, the prof responds well to questions and there is a lot of quizzes but you are allowed your notes, and she gives a lot of practice to help prepare too.
I didn't love this course, and I found Carrie's explanations pretty iffy at points. I also did not get emails back for some of the questions I had, including grading for certain quizzes. I did much worse on the final than I expected, and I realized I was marked incorrectly in many places. Carrie did fix my grade, but 20% is a huge amount of error.
