This class is super fun. Carrie is very clear on what she wants from us in assignments.
Amazing teacher, exciting person! really makes you think and you leave her class with a new and great understanding of literature. Every one should take a class from this prof.
Very easy and nice, if you don't like too much homework or tests then take her.
Very good teacher. I really enjoyed her class and the way that she taught. One of the only english classes that I felt like I actually got something out of the class. I however disagree with the attendance policy. All my essays and homework were A papers but I missed 3 classes so my grade dropped to a B. Don't miss class.
My favorite teacher. She is funny, smart, and cares about her students. Highly recommended!
Great instructor - if you attend class and take notes you wont have any problems. Lots of reading - great in class workgroups. Helpful and responsive to questions.
This class is fun, interesting and not too much work. THe Prof is pretty generous in her grading methods. The downside to this class is that the reading can be a bit dry and poetry frustrating. Show up, do the reading and back up you written work and you'll do fine.
Excellent teacher. I was not really into literature when I took her class, but she made me really appreciate it. It's not an easy class per say since it does involve a lot of reading and participation, but it is interesting and well worth the effort.
She has a passion for the material which clearly shows in the way she teaches the class. A LOT of reading, but she leads the class in discussions of the material & welcomes comments no matter what your opinion of the material is. Very few assignments, just the weekly reading & one term paper. I highly recommend this class. Excellent professor!
This teacher was the best teacher I have had at Boise State. I went into her class an Elementary Ed. major and came out an English major. I was very intimidated by this teacher's knowledge on her subject. She knows about all there is to know about literature, but that is why the class was so interesting. Reading is well worth your time.
fun class to take. professor definitely has a passion for the subject matter and it shows. the class format was fun and inviting for participation. a lot of reading involved but this IS a literature class.
She is one tough customer, but she will bring out the best in you. She expects you to show up and do the work. Big on classroom participation. Doesn't expect perfection, very generous in grading if you do the work and show up. Best Prof in the department if not the University!
The best teacher ever
Limited perspective and unrealistic. Copious amounts of busy-work inbetween larger assignments--coupled with unrealistic time deadlines. I felt I would have learned a lot more if the professor considered the work loads from the other classes students take. There is pushing yourself and then there is becoming a cripple for the rest of your life...
She's very strict, but if you read the assignment sheets and meet the requirements, she's really generous and rewards effort. She's also really helpful in helping you improve your writing.
A no-nonsense professor with a passion for the subject- a fun professor to have if you keep up on the reading and participate in class discussions. Can be intimidating, but she's very helpful- especially if you're putting effort into the class.
She is an honors professor, therefore expect workload to be heavy. The essay prompts are difficult, but they are not impossible. You have to put time and effort in writing your essays (there will be three), and she gives you plenty of time to complete it. Excellent teacher with great stories to tell and a sense of humor. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER!
She is an amazing teacher. She is very dedicated to her subject and is very passionate about teaching it. Reading the material and having a good understanding of it is most definitely required, don't think you can just float this class. But if you keep up with the reading/assignments and participate in class, it's definitely worth the while!
Probably one of the best professors at BSU. Has a rather abrasive personality that may scare you at first but genuinely cares for her students. Forces you to think at a higher level. Do not take this class if you are looking for an easy "A." However, if you want to learn a lot about poetry and are up for a challenge, it is a great class for you.
This is the best class I have every taken!!! She is such a great teacher, but you must listen to her comments if you want to succeed in her class. She does really care about how her students perform in her class! Great Teacher
Very knowledgeable about the subject matter and she has a passion for it. She makes a subject that could easily turn very dry, interesting.
This is a tough class, but she is very willing to work with you if you show effort. She is very passionate about this topic and it helps make it more interesting to people who aren't poet enthusiasts. She is GREAT professor and will challenge you.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. She was going through Chemotherapy this semester, and she was still a badass teacher. She is a little abrasive, but loads of fun in lecture. She won't waste your time. I learned loads. Her class might have just saved me from being a horrible writer. Take her, if at all possible.
She is a great professor! There is a lot of work in her class, but plenty of guidance and time to complete assignments. Lectures are informative, helpful, and entertaining. If you have the opportunity, take her.
Dr. Seymour is a great teacher, but if you're looking for an easy few credits, look somewhere else. She really pushes you to write...a lot. Quite a bit of reading, a lot of writing, and a lot of asking questions. She likes Virginia Woolf, so if you're like me, and don't understand anything Woolf writes, then you're in for a ride.
Before taking her class, I hated lit. Now I love it and have Carrie to thank for that. She shows you how to read poetry, and make it something fascinating while you have to critically think about the txt. I gained so much knowledge, and even have a high grade in the class. She gives everyone a chance to succeed, and Im glad to say that I did it
Great teacher with a passion for British Literature (especially poetry). Be prepared to read critically and discuss often. English majors and non English majors alike will find this class to be challenging and awesome.
She's a really great teacher and keeps it interesting! she also has a great sense of humor and kind of keeps the atmosphere in the classroom relaxed except when she's telling us something we seriously need to know. Can be brutal with grading, but as long as you're willing to work she's willing to help!
Carrie is a wonderful teacher with great passion for the subject, but if your not very into Literature, get ready for an ass kicking. Some of the readings will make you fall asleep. The poetry will make you scream in frustration. She can be generous with grading though, so if you show up and really try your hardest, she might have mercy on you.
Expect to work hard and write a lot, but also expect to come out a better writer. She makes 3-hr classes interesting. I can safely say that everyone in the class, English major or not, enjoyed it and learned a lot. She has a very loose and abrasive way of talking, but she's never rude/degrading and she really cares about your work and improvement.
Class was difficult, and there were lots of debates usually between students, but it was definitely one of my favorite classes I've taken in my college life. Her explanations were always interesting (often moreso than the content), and she does a really good job of facilitating class discussions. I've already recommended her to everyone I know.
This was one of the best classes I've ever taken in my academic career and with the most incredible professor of my academic career. I got so much more out of this class than I expected! Very difficult and requires a lot of reading and applying what is read. She made the work of this class almost 400 level but it was so worth it. Just work hard
The best instructor I have ever had. The class required a LOT of hard work but it was more than worth it. I learned more in one semester than I have in years of prior English classes. I would recommend this class to anyone who truly wanted to become a better writer. Stop reading these comments and enroll in the class. It's worth it.
BEST TEACHER I have ever had :)! I'm a psychology major and have never really had an interest in literature, until after Carrie's class. The work load is tough, so stay on top...but in the end it is worth it! She is an amazing person who truly cares about her student's success! She is my favorite professor @ BSU :)!
Don't let her scare you. On day one she rants about how tough her class is but if you are NOT a freshman and actually show up to class, it's pretty easy. I didn't buy the texts-I checked them out from the library and it saved me $$$. I suggest the same.
Great professor, so willing to help and talk things over! She'll go to hell and back for her students, and I love that she's passionate about what she teaches.
Very difficult course. Lots of essays, responses, and out of class work. You'll pretty much pass, but with many hours of research and writing. Nice lady, not so nice course. Only take if you already have 9 credits, large workload. Very demanding for in-class participation. Several tough information/ideas are presented often.
Carrie is very personable, knowledgeable and fun to learn from. Also, she understands that not everyone is great at analyzing literature and grades based on effort given. As long as you participate in class and do all the work, you WILL pass. Great professor overall.
Carrie is one of the most helpful professors I have met yet. She actually cares if you do well in her class. All you have to do is try and participate.
She is a strict teacher, but she wants her students to succeed. The readings were challenging but we always discussed them in class which helped. Great feedback throughout the course and my writing improved a lot!
Carrie Seymour is one of my favorite people. She loves students who love being students, and hates (vocally) students who are rude, who do not pay attention, or who try to fake their way through assignments. If you give her courses honest effort, she will reciprocate with an awesome, no-nonsense class that will inspire you to love the material
Professor Seymour has been my favorite professor so far. She is acerbic, witty, and a total hoot. She cares about the classes' success, and if you are willing to follow the instructions and put in the work, you'll do great. Just don't expect to wing an assignment in half an hour. I'd love to take a class with her again.
Amazing professor. I didn't think I'd like the class and only took it because I had to, but it turned out to be one of my favorites this semester. She is extremely helpful and answers questions right away. Her wicked sense of humor makes even material not inherently riveting interesting. You have to work in her class, but expectations are clear.
Carrie Seymour is passionate about literature and her passion is infectious. Although she is within the top five of the best professors I have experienced in my college career while at another university, she is the best professor at Boise State. If you're serious about your education, Carrie Seymour is the best choice.
I absolutely hated Carrie at the beginning of the semester. She is in your face about things and expects a lot out of you. After a few weeks, she warmed up to us and was really helpful. She is an amazing professor and she wants to see your succeed, but only if you show up and work for it.
Carrie is probably one of my favorite people on this planet. Though intimidated by her at first, I learned SO much in her class. Her passion for literature truly rubs off on her students, and her sense of humor made the three hour class fly by - but be ready to learn. Caring, insightful, hilarious. Best prof I've ever had.
Hands down my favorite professor. She expects you to engage with the material and sources. She made me laugh all the time; her dry sense of humor makes even James Agee more bearable. If I can swing it, I'd love to take another class with here. She's a rock star.
Learned more from her than I have in any other class at Boise State! She makes you a way better writerreader and I actually enjoyed attending class. She pushes you and has plenty of expectations for the class but if you do the work, which really isn't that much, it's an easy good grade!
Carrie is the best professor at Boise State. She actually makes you work for your grade and if you put forth the effort, you will learn and more than likely develop a passion for literature. Unfortunately, she is the only professor of this caliber at BSU. She is simply amazing and should probably be teaching at an Ivy league school.
Carrie was an excellent teacher. She makes you work for your grade, and will give you a lot of feedback. She also held a lot of workshops and one-on-one time, which was a major plus. She helped me through the semester, and made summer classes actually worth it. While she is a tough teacher, you will not regret having her.
Carrie is absolutely the best teacher I've ever had! She makes the assignments very clear, and explains everything in depth. She genuinely cares about the success of her students. She is funny, passionate, and very knowledgeable. I feel honored to be one of her students. She is very straightforward, and seems to love feedback from her students.
Carrie is excellent! She is the epitome of what a good professor stands for! Heavy workload in the class reading/writing wise but if you stay on top of things and put in effort it's a cake-walk. She gives great feedback, and has excellent information to provide her students! Would and will take more classes in the future!
One of the best instructors I have ever had. Be prepared to read. Be prepared to think and articulate a position. You will write for this class. Lots of work but worth it.
She has spent a lot of time trying to figure out how she wants to teach this class because it's her first time teaching this particular course, but she's extremely intelligent and a very caring and intriguing person. I really enjoy her class.
She is great! I can't thank her enough for her diligence and understanding. She was willing to work with me even when I was unable to buy a book. The course has a writing boot camp component. It all worked out just fine. The group project topics that the Professor chose were appropriate yet challenging. The course is rather complex and covers every
Carrie is wonderfully blunt. Even if you don't like literature, you will enjoy her class a lot. Lots of reading and tough grading, but it makes you a better student. She is willing to clarify and meet with students. A midterm, final paper, and final exam, and daily reading. Class discussions are usually good, but could be better and more in depth.
Carrie is honestly one of the most wonderful professors ever. She's absolutely hilarious, actually cares about what she is teaching, and is 100% honest with her classes about the subjects and grading and things like that. She's incredibly knowledgeable and I learned a lot from her class.
She is more than willing to work with you and wants you to succeed which is hard to find with many professors who are just focused on grades. I really enjoyed her and her class.
Knowledge about subject but explains it in terms that are understandable.
Carrie is one of the best professors I have taken at Boise State. Her main goal throughout the course is to see you improve your writing skills and bases her grading on this. Her expectations are clear and she takes a topic that could be considered boring and makes it into a very interesting lecture. I would easily take her again.
I did a 5 week hybrid course for ENGL 102 in the summer. Carrie was a very fair grader, but she definitely didn't ease up on the homework just because it was 5 weeks. Over a normal semester it would probably have been a fairly easy class. She's really funny and knows her stuff.
Carrie is the best professor I have ever had. She is super funny, she lays out her grading criteria to a T, and she will do just about anything to help you as long as you ask. Don't make excuses, do your work, and READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. If you show up and put the work in not only will you pass, but she will mold you into a better writer.
I took the 5 week summer course with her, and I liked her as a teacher. She was funny and straightforward with letting us know what she expected on essays. I didn't care for the fact that she verbalized political beliefs, but she never graded me on my views. She graded fairly based on how well you do your research and present your arguments.
Dr. Seymour is funny and blunt, but has high expectations. I highly recommend you take ENG 275 before taking any of her surveys, especially if you skipped 102, as she will require you use those skills later in the semester. She will also require you spend a lot of time in your dictionary when it comes to vocab--so be on top of that from day one.
Love her! She is an amazing person. She always went over the assignments to make sure we understood. Just show up with your work and you'll do great.
Best 3 hour class of my life. I looked foreword to this class every week and I know 90% of my class was right there with me. There are many papers and you will need to do a lot of work for a good grade, but there really isn't a grading criteria. She grades you based on your personal writing, no expectations. Do your work, listen, and show up.
Took the 5 week summer course. It was A LOT of work in a short amount of time, but if you put the time & effort in, an A is very possible. I loved Carrie. She is understanding & responds to emails quick! She has clear expectations & gives valuable feedback. To my surprise, I learned a lot about writing in this class and HIGHLY recommend her!!
I took the 5 week 2019 summer course so it was a TON of writing to do but it is a college English class so be prepared. She is a great teacher and offers great feedback and useful peer reviews on the papers. She is very outspoken and can be critical but in a good way. Overall, I would take her again.
Carrie is quite a gem! I feel as though she created an engaging and inviting environment for her students. She also cared more about our classes atmosphere and participation than assigning a lot of hard assignments that are for a grade. As long as you are engaged and participate you will do well! Carrie makes the course funny and relatable!
This teacher is the best ever, she is so respectful, likes to help students, and her courses materials are well-explained, clear, and organized. I took an online class with her, definitely take UF 200 with her.
The first few weeks of class were daunting because I've never had a prof be so upfront about expectations. She has some very standards, but is more than willing to work with you and help. She wants you to succeed! Class participation goes a long way, and effort counts for a lot more than perfection! She injects humor and sarcasm into a dry topic.
If you can take a class from Professor Seymour, Do It! She is an amazing teacher and gives great feedback. Her class was full of learning opportunities and interactive material, and the class discussions push you to get the most out of each topic. She did a great job of getting a semesters amount of learning into five highly manageable weeks! 10/10
Carrie is a professors that you should go out of your way to interact with. If you have the chance to take one of her courses, DO IT! She is thoughtful, charismatic, full of personality, and encourages students to be as open and honest as they can. Her feedback is clear, concise, and helpful. She is a tough grader, but her class is better for it.
I loved having Professor Seymour! She is an amazing instructor and very approachable. She's fun to listen to in lectures, and I definitely recommend her classes to anyone.
Professor Seymour is an uplifting professor who does have a lot of standards but as long as you put in the effort and participate in class then you're good. It isn't a hard class and if you do get confused she will help you out. It is a research based class but she makes it fun and leaves everything up to you instead of her choosing what you do.
I really liked how Carrie taught our class and the things she had us do. I feel like I learned a lot and felt like a part of the class, and I wish I was studying English so I could take her again.
Some found her to be harsh, but I loved the way she set up this class. While she is very blunt I appreciate her honestly with us students.
Always changed requirements, inconsistent grading. Was VERY rude. The class was uncomfortable to be in as she would constantly express her disdain for it verbally. She'd say, "I hate this ***** class" upon arriving, & say it again if no one raised their hands. She expected you to be in class 10 minutes early while never doing the same herself.
Cathy Seymour could quite literally be the worst professor I have ever had. She frequently goes on side tangents. Extremely blunt and unprofessional. She regularly raises her voice at students when they do not respond how she would like.
Carrie frequently has inappropriate outbursts during class. Her language is demeaning to students. She frequently makes false claims about the character and ability of the class as a whole. Carrie has extremely specific and unattainable expectations yet does not communicate them until she has been let down.
Many of the positive reviews must be from a long time ago. This teacher makes the class very uncomfortable and she often has angry outbursts. She is very condescending to her students. Ex: “So don't expect me to have sympathy for if you if you get a cold” and “You students are incredibly annoying” on first day of class. “Short reflection” = Essays.
Carrie has high expectations of her students and their assignments but does not explain them. She will be disappointed if students do not do the assignments exactly how she expects without giving clear instructions. She would get upset when students did not have a response to her question immediately after asking it (no time to formulate answer).
smokes weed and is absolutely insane
She gives out so many long assignments without giving clear instructions. Her grading is very harsh. She would send out angry emails if students did not do exactly what she wanted us to do.
Her instructions for each assignment are confusing and unclear. She'll knock any points on assignments unless she thinks it's perfect. Each week is packed with 3-4 assignments. This was an all online class that I wouldn't recommend if you don't have the time or patience for it.
There isn't a ton of work but the essay guidelines get pretty vague. You do a lot of peer reviews and conferences for feedback. Most assignments consisted of answering questions in a textbox but you need to do the readings in order to answer them. Overall, it wasn't difficult but it wasn't the easiest.
Prof Seymour is an interesting character who is very outspoken about politics, general events, and pet peeves. She is kind of looney, but aside from her entertaining antics and bad language, she is a great professor. You can ask her any questions, Zoom outside of class, or email at any time (she even responds at 2 a.m.). Grading is fuzzy sometimes.
She is unable to control her behavior with the class. Assignments were extremely long and she acted like her class was the only one that students were taking. She is very strict with attendance and often would call out students publicly for missing class. There's a reason she's been in trouble with the school many times.
Professor Seymour really cares about her students and their success in her class. She made the class fun and interesting, and was very understanding if anything were to come up. I definitely recommend her class, you will learn a lot and it is a good experience!
She knocks off a massive amount of points for any reason. If you have trouble with the canvas links that she set up she will claim it is your fault She doesn't allow you to make up work If you need to contact her, be prepared to email her at the beginning of the semester and not get a response until the end of the semester
Honestly confused about the negative ratings because Seymour was great!! She deeply cared about her students. As long as you show up, put in your best effort and are prepared you will do great in this class. She is definitely very outspoken about politics and her beliefs (some may find offensive but I thought it was funny).
