open book and open notes test...need i say more?!

Foster allows you to buy his perfect notes and use them for all the tests. This course is not the easiest though. Steer clear of "stochastic" linear programming.
You get his lecture notes, as mentioned earlier, which is great except that it makes you wonder why you come to class at all (booooring). Exams are open notes, open book. Don't get too comfortable though--if you don't know the material, you won't do well.
Foster is rad. He is one of those professor whose a little burned out on teaching so get the old exams you're golden. Just don't get too excited and take him for three classes in a single quarter cuz you'll burn out him quickly.
I was tempted to put retired as his status because he basically is; never is any incentive to learn. A crap shoot for who tops the curve on his open book tests. If you take him for 170b buy the actual book because he asks ?'s from the back
I've had Foster for 170B, 172B&C and 178. Nice to not have to memorize formulas. Make sure you know the notes so that you are not wasting time during the test to find info. The Econ Tutor always has old versions of his tests which are very similiar.
recycles exam questions
Great professor, one of the best I have had. Midterms and finals are all straightfoward. Problem is that he has a tough curve in this class. 94% = A-.
Awesome professor, probably best I had at UCSD. Clear, to the point, funny. Sometimes his class was difficult because of a strict bell curve.
hes a very nice guy. all notes online. tells you exactly what to expect on test. doesnt try to trick you. all tests open notes, awesome!
Midterm: Was exactly like the one in the practice exam. Everything followed through and it's not as hard as it seems. His lectures are boring, jokes around sometimes, and his lectures are printed out, so you don't have to copy everything down. Don't have to buy book, you save money.
If you're one of the smarter ppl in your classes, avoid Foster! He provides notes, his exams are open notes/book and not hard at all so the curve is really insane! Messing up 1 pt can mean the drop of a whole grade so if you're smart and mess up, don't expect the dumb ones to help with the curve.
I don't know about these other reviews. Foster is a nice guy and he's fairly interesting to listen to but his tests for 100A were ridiculously hard. They were open notes (not open book) and still, everyone I talked to had no clue what they were doing. Problems in notes differed from many on the test. The econ tutor didn't help much.
HE IS THE BEST TEAHCER I HAVE HAD AT UCSD, NOTES HELPFUL DONT NEED THE BOOK JUST GO TO LECTURE AND YOULL GET AN A
Thought this class was going to be an easy A..boy was I wrong!!!! the Midterm is representative of material, but the FINAL is 75% and was extremely difficult. Ended up with a C in the class eventhough I got an A on the Midterm
Foster is awesome. He explains the points extremely well, better than any teacher I have had at UCSD. He provides notes and practice problems and actually teaches. I know.. its amazing he is a prof that teachers. TAKE HIM!
I hope I would have a head full of hair when I get older like Foster. Foster's classes are easy and you don't really have to go because of his notes. Over the last couple couples, he changed his grading to something like 20% A's 40% B's etc. And since his class is easy, it's really hard to get an A. If you are really intelligent and don't want to study much to get an A, take Jeon (his tests are hard as hell). If you want an sure A with a whole load of studying, take Foster.
Take foster. he's amazing! Maybe he'll even get up on top of the podium at the end of the quarter and do his imfamous shake.
Foster is a great professor to know. He teaches straight from his lecture notes (which are easy to comprehend). Some classes of his have open book (& notes) finals, which were ok when they weren't curved (WI 2002), but I've heard that he now grades on a strict curve, which is not helpful when a 93% = D. All in all, he's a good, humerous professor.

excellent teacher.one of the best i've had. loves teaching.open note exams.straightforward. no tricks. can't ask for more fairness. lectures are 100% relevant. easy to comprehend lecture style. highly recommend foster. i would take anything he teaches. you will LEARN from this guy.
foster is amazing. he gives you open note/book tests. Should go to class as his tests are 100% off of lectures. he tells you everything you need to know, he is laid back and explains concepts extremely well. funny and entertaining also. easy A for a class that shouldn't be.
He's one of the greatest professor at ucsd. The exams weren't tricky at all, just go read through the examples from his lecture notes or go to econ tutor, then u will do fine
Easy as cake. Open note/open book tests, lectures posted online, tests similar to practice tests/sample problems/homework questions, but no tricks. TAs will give you homework answers, the only reason I got an A- instead of an A was because I didn't go to get the second homework answers. You'll learn alot, he cares and is funny.
Foster is amazing. His classes are taken directly from his notes, which he posts online and are crystal clear. He grades on a curve where an A is 70 percent . Also you do learn the information only without the junk that other professors add to their lectures. Highly recommend for the quality of teaching and the ease of class.
Dr. Foster. Enough said... Do not go to TAs because TAs cannot teach at all. Go to lecture everyday, read your textbook, his notes and you are bounded to get an A. Best, fairest, most interesting teacher I've ever taken.
Great professor, he's clear and engaging and his curve is amazing. Going to class can be helpful, but it's not necessary because he posts all his lecture notes online. I'm not sure how important it is to read the textbook, you could probably get an A without it, but there are some questions on the test that aren't from lecture.
Excellent Professor! He actually cares about his students' learning experiences and even spent a lecture talking about climate change! He curves so that 70% is an A! Don't underestimate this class, since many people did it and did not get A's. This class is very doable with little effort, and you learn a lot! I highly recommend this class!
very good curve, and easy as long as you put in a little effort. his tests are multiple choice and problems, most of which come out of the book. The reading isn't really that necessary, only need to do the practice problems, just attend class and pay attention.
Thoroughly goes over concepts with multiple examples, which was, for me, a waste of time. We weren?t able to cover some of the most complex ideas. For depth, I read the book. Doesn?t follow the book exactly. Hops around but within sections, introduces ideas beyond the book relevant to the section, and skips the most complex ideas.
I really like him. His lectures are actually pretty engaging and MAKES SENSE. Very clear and very easy. This was my 2nd time taking this class and I totally recommend this professor. He's very straightforward and quite possibly one of the best econ prof
he is a good lecturer, funny and interesting but his tests were impossibly hard. I had friends who had taken econ 1 and could not believe that my tests looked like they did. Makes the class more confusing than necessary on tests. If you are good at econ than maybe this is a good fit, but if youre looking for an easy econ 1 class look elsewhere.
He is not what he use to be, reading the text book is an absolute, his text are impossible, I studied alot and still did bad, I have never studied so much for a classs and did bad. I heard he was really easy but...once again he is not what he use to be he has changed 180 degrees.
Professor Carroll's lectures are pretty sweet--nothing too confusing/boring. 1st midterm was very easy, second was pretty hard, and the final was slightly more difficult than midterm 2. His tests are actually very representative of the material (his notes). You must read the book and do his practice tests though. An A wasn't too hard to get.
At times the class was a bit boring, but if you pay attention you should be able to do well on the tests. My Advice: Don't Ditch Class, DO THE Practice Problems + Old Exam Questions (You'll be amazed how many of the old questions appear on your tests)+ if you have Sarah as your TA go to Discussion + Office Hours.
Please do not go by the 70% for an A comments that people have been giving you. The top 25% of the course will receive an A and since his exams are fairly doable if you study you are going to need at least an 85% for an A. I ended up with a B and my overall % was 81.
Not a pushover class, class average may be high: study. Reading supplements lectures, save time and go to lecture so you don't have to read. Go to section to figure out the problems he assigns. The prof's tests are based on his notes and problems he assigns.
HILARIOUS. He makes economics extremely fun, easy, and interesting. You definitely have to study for this class, but it's still not terribly hard. I would highly recommend Foster.
gives you a word document and then writes on the blackboard word for word what is on the notes. very useless. quite funny but you do not need to go to class
lectures are pointless. he just goes over the notes he gives on webct. discussions are to answer practice problems. tests are open notes but not enough time to use them effectivley. you need to study alot for this class. alot.
Pretty boring teacher that just reads off his notes which are posted online. Attending class is pretty much useless. If you can understand his notes, you'll get an A
Pretty laid back and has some funny stats jokes. Don't bother reading the book or going to the discussion section, it will save you alot of time and money. Most of the information is in the lecture notes which he posts online. If you want additional help, go to his office.
I usually do well in all my econ classes, but this class I tried the hardest and still ended up with a C-. the average for the midterm was around a 52%.
Awesome guy. His classes follow a simple format. He basically copies his lecture notes that he provides to you onto the board. He assigns problem sets and practice exams that are excellent prep for his open book exams. In short, take his classes!
Foster is easily the funniest prof in the econ department. I had him for 120a which was jokingly easy and 178 which he made fun. Good teacher who posts his notes online. You can get away with not going to class but you'd be missing out on his witty commentary on how bad the economy is doing and who's fault it is.
Overall, a decent professor, but very boring as he reads word for word (seriously) off of the notes. Class is quite hard because your grade is dependent on one midterm and one final and you go over a LOT of material. He needs to add in at least another midterm to make grading for the class more fair and encourage people to come more often.
The first midterm is easy the final is extremely hard. Most people do well on the midterm, but the second half is brutal. However, you won't know until the final comes and it's too late. If you aren't taking this class for a requirement, I suggest to not to take it as an elective. Econ tutor won't save you in this class.
He is a great lecturer and you do learn a lot. That being said if you care about your GPA probably better to stay away because it seemed like he curved it pretty brutally. It's still a great class and he teaches it well. Overall- if you can take a hit on your GPA and want to take one of the most useful classes for the job market at UCSD, take it.
Tells you exactly what will be on the test, lets you use open notes, open book, whatever you need. If you work out sample problems before hand tests will be a sinch.
Boring boring boring. I took his class with an 8am lecture and hated every minute. I normally enjoy economics, but he reads directly (word for word) from the notes with a monotone voice that is tremendously difficult to focus on for very long. Sounds exactly like my grandfather scolding me. He rattles through examples too quickly to follow.
WARNING: Econ major here. Very hard and frustrating class. I attended all lectures dropped the class on the last day because I had an F. I went to every section to get help, all the TA's are useless. Lectures are all over the place, he doesn't make it clear enough what's on test. Midterm average was usually below 68%. Good Luck.
Very very hard class watch out.
one of the best economists and professors out there. he teaches VERY WELL, but his class is hard. his lectures are very informational, but they are usually all over the place. his tests are very hard because he doesn't exactly specify what is on the test.but he is most definitely one of the best professors out there. just a hard test giver. not bad
Easy class. 13% of class did not pass this qtr. Attend lecture and take notes b/c his tests are on what he teaches and not the book (only remember 1 question from the book about Cost-Benefit, and that's on the first page). Study from his lecture outlines and from his old exams (esp, if you choose to miss lecture). Grade on 2 midterms & a final.
Honestly this class was a joke. He teaches extended, difficult economics concepts/curves beyond what we are supposed to learn in class and test on them on midterms/finals. Midterms were kinda easy but the final was the killer. But a tip of the class would be study and do ALL the old exams and you'll end up with an A/B. this class killed my gpa ):
Personlly, I nevered opened the textbook except for the first midterm. Prof. Foster is very knowledgable and funny. His lectures were very informational and clear and the midterms and finals were refective of the lectures and past exams. MUST study the past exams in order to suceed in this class. Overall, great class!
Loved the material from the text but not the lectures. Made mistakes while lecturing and made material confusing. Does not take you seriously when you go to his office hours for a grade change. Slurs when he talks. Rushes through examples; goes at HIS pace, not the students'. Not all exam questions were discussed in class or section.
Foster teaches complicated Thereoms that aren't even covered in the book. HE DOES NOT LET YOU USE NOTES ON EXAMS in 100A! Discussion notes do a poor job of explaining his chosen concepts, on top of it there are numerous typos in his notes. I'm sure foster is better than machina, but I was disapointed to find out that the Exams weren't open notes.
I thought he was nice but he ended up failed me. I got about average on my midterms but still got an F. I really have nothing else to say. Totally speechless.
He is a champ. His lectures can be pretty dry at times, seeing as he basically writes down his lecture notes (which are probably the most systematic notes I have ever had for a class), but he is incredibly clear. Told us exactly what the questions were going to be on the midterm. no textbook, open book tests etc. Wish i had him for other classes
You don't have to go to class but he sometimes go over some problems. He's easy if you understand lectures. You don't have to buy a textbook.
Very nice and clear. (Writes small on the chalkboard lol.) Just study his practice problems and read his notes. 2 midterms and a final are your grade. Exams are pretty fair and straightforward.
Professor Foster is one of most dedicated and clear lectures in the Department. His notes were beyond excellently organized and were helpful sources of information. I highly recommend him.
Some of the comments on Foster are ridiculous. He is sooo straight forward. He basically gives you the answers to his tests beforehand. If you can't pass his tests, its on you, NOT him. Great professor!
He is really clear about the lecture. Make sure you do all the practice problems and sample exam. You will be good to go.
His handouts lecture notes were very well written. His tests one midterm and one final were open notes so make sure you do all the practice exams. STATA exercises were not helpful for the test in my opinion, though it won't hurt to print them out for the test. Overall a nice guy with a huge curve who will help you out if you have questions.
He is a good professor! The 120 series material is relatively dry and difficult, but with his notes (which he has for every topic) everything is manageable! Focus in class, do the problem sets, ask questions and you'll get an A.
He changed his final last minute after he got hands on Econ tutor notes to make sure the notes did not help, but on the process of doing that he made the test harder for everyone making half of the class fail.
This guy is awesome. Really funny, and really smart. I can't say I particularly like Econometrics, so I wasn't fully invested in the class, but the classes I went to were always really helpful and not boring to sit through. This guy is hilarious and makes a very dry subject palatable.
One midterm, final, and 3 (easy) stata homeworks. Tests are open note so you don't need to go to class. He gives outlines of every chapter with examples. Midterm is harder than the final just because its shorter, so you have to know where to look in your notes. Easy advanced elective
Foster wasn't a bad teacher, but I found his lectures to be incredibly boring. He basically just reads through his notes in class (which he posts online) and doesn't add anything else, so at 8AM it will put you right to sleep. However his tests are open note so if you are a good self studier you shouldn't have a problem doing well in this class.
Open notes on multiple choice tests. Everyone should do okay, right? Nope, make a small mistake, there goes 10%. Partial credit? Nah bro, -2 points for marking the wrong answer. Studied my ass off and I got screwed.
worst teacher on the earth! HE DO NOT CARE HIS STUDENTS ANYMORE, DON'T TAKE IT!
He just read lecture notes (posted online) in the most monotone voice in 8am lecture. Even worse he teaches something OBSOLETE and even wrong!!! If you are those students who work hard and earn a A, this class may screw you over because others just brought econ tutor notes to his OPEN-NOTE exams. There is no partial credit for multiple choice exams
professor foster is one of my favorite professors I have ever had at UCSD. he is extremely clear, and is always available and happy to help with any questions you have. do your practice exams and take good, organized notes and you will have no problems whatsoever
Just like all of foster's other classes 2 exams, open notes. If you study all the material you will do fine. If you are planning to go into finance post graduation this is a good class to take so you can learn the jargon and some concepts.
I liked him as a professor; he pretty much just goes over lecture notes but is very chill, relaxed, and appreciates questions. As far as the class and its material goes- it is, according to my judgment, quite left-leaning and biased. The free market is discredited with little evidence and it is essentially given that it is an illegitimate system.
the exam is fair, fairly easy if you actually study for it. :)
By far the worst lecturer I've had at UCSD. Doesn't care to teach anymore.
Really doesn't care anymore, he literally reads off of his powerpoints during lecture. His tests are pretty tough and overall I don't recommend taking any of his classes if you actually want to learn something.
He just reads his lecture notes to the class, but his notes are pretty detailed. He lets you have a cheat sheet and use his notes for all exams. The exams were pretty easy and did include questions from the reading, so its a good idea to do the reading. His curve was pretty generous, but could potentially hurt you. For example, a c was 82%-60%.
I got almost every question correct on the final exam, but this professor failed me because he didn't think I showed enough work ON A MULTIPLE CHOICE EXAM
Nice guy!!! Best econ prof at UCSD!!! Definitely choose him!!!!
Don't need to buy a textbook. His material is very useful. He usually reads his material. Tests are fairly easy, so everyone can get full credit for the test. if you miss one question, it's hard to get A. Despite your expensive tuition, if your goal is just to pass this course, take him.
His lectures are boring but at least you have all the material posted online. You practically have to get perfect scores on the midterm and final to get an A. The curve is just so unfair. 89% is a C! I got 35/40 on midterm and 77/80 on the final, which is 94% and that was a B+, not A. So you can get screwed with the curve so high
DONT take his class! He just read off the powerpoint and he doesn't if you fail the class... He just try to get out of here asap
