Nice, however things learned in class were not on tests sometimes, send a sub when she cannot make it to class good or bad?
I don't know if I just suck at math or what but I didn't learn very well from her.
I had a B all semester long and then I got a C- I came to class everyday. I don't know, everyone else seem to get it, and I didn't. I don't think she was a good teacher for me, I didn't understand it. I hope for math 123 I get a better teacher. good luck to you guys
Excellent class. I had loads of fun taking it. It consisted of relaxed and informal sessions. I really enjoyed taking this course. A really groovy professor to have! The best thing about this course was that there was no need to purchase any book; all the notes were provided by her. Cool grading too
Good organization (lecture notes and course outline on a website); don't go with book and instead follow her notes to seek decent score on test. Went to her for help and she looked at me with irritation for not understanding. At first I thought I was stupid, then realized it was her and the few who remained in the class took calc in high school!
I learned more from her than any other teacher in my life. She was extremely helpful and definatly fo to her office hours because she will be very helpful. Great math teacher!!!!
Don't like her at all. Made assignments to difficult to turn in. Must have answer sheet or no credit. I still did all my work and still got good grades with A's and B's on test, but the homework was just not cool at all. Just overall don't like her either.
She is a great professor! She is extremely smart and knows what she's doing. She tries to help out her students as much as she possibly can when they don't understand something. I really like her teaching style. I am able to follow exactly what she is saying. She has all of her notes typed out online too-very organized! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Dr. Bellomo is the best math professor I have ever had. Her quizzes are open book open note, and the test question are practically copy paste from quizzes. you get a ton of points just for being in class and turning in homework. HIGHLY recommended.
Dr. bellemo is a great instructor when she teaches, however she can have an attitude at times. Although Math is not my subjuct, I find this class totally useless. She is not creative, and I could use somemore ZZZZ'S. I would liketo see her be more creative with her teaching inorder to keep me intersted in the subject.
She is a very nice teacher but, her teaching skills confuse me at times. i can see her teaching in a higher math class. she's 2 smart for this. she could use her intelligence/nerdiness at a better place. her tests r hard.
lets just say half the class dropped out. don't like the online hw. its better to do book problems cuz you do mmore problems n u get more practice.. online thing makes me lazy n not want to practice. i think thats y im doing bad in this class
Last summer,I took Math 121 with Dr. Bellomo. Although I am not good at math, she helped me understand the math concepts more clearly.
Ok she is very intelligent...you have to do the tests/quizes online and it gets comfusing at times. just keep yourself interested alot and pay alot of attention.
She is the worst math teacher that I've ever had. She doesn't explain very well, she is likely to respond, "because I said so." Doesn't teach calculus very well, she seems more like a Pre-Calc or even Algebra II teacher. If you can find someone else, please take them instead.
She is smart! She knows her material well, but the problem is with her teaching. I had a hard time understanding her steps...OH and u get 3 tests. Harsh grading!
She gives out notes prior to tests sure, but she always goes off track, which can be confusing as to where to write down notes. She has a tendency to throw facts and data into people's faces and expects them to figure it out themselves. I highly discourage taking this professor unless you have prior experience with Calculus.
Her monotone voice makes the class a chore to attend speaking of attendance she requires you to go to this dumb recitation class which doesnt even help with the understanding of math she would give out practice quiz which are easy to do but the test itself is way too difficult her online homework is tedious and hard to input answers with avoid her
If you have a STRONG background in algebra, take her. Otherwise, I'd recommend someone else. She skips steps in her examples and her quizzes are difficult. She knows her stuff, but her teaching style needs to change since the budget cuts. The recitation was no help at all; her TAs weren't able to thoroughly explain some of the problems.Monotone also
Her quizzes are hard, but you can work in groups and the lowest 3 grades are dropped. The tests are fair and only cover material that is covered in class. WebAssign is a pain, but can be really helpful if you don't understand something because it walks you through problems step by step. Overall, I really liked Bellomo and would recommend her.
Dr. Bellomo is the best math teacher I've ever had. She explains things so well that even the most obscure concepts make sense. Attendance to lecture wasn't mandatory, but you have to go to the recitation class to take quizzes each week. Amazing teacher. :)
She does have a lot of patience. Her teaching is a bit dry, I mean, the subject is already--but she's just a straight shoot teacher. Overall she's a nice professor. She'll tell you what to study for, so make sure you do just that!
One of the worst math classes i've experienced. extremely boring not to mention the way she explains really confused the heck out of me. theres online quizzes that you have to take that require HOURS of your precious time. you will save yourself ALOTT of stress if you take someone else.
Good Teacher. I took the summer 1 term and she jammed a lot into a 3 week course. she told you what was up on tests and gave you a notecard to use. Her notes are very clear, she was organized. I got a C, but that's just cuz I didn't study for the first test and failed it, and made it up otherwise.
Pretty good teacher. The lecture isn't mandatory but it's advised to go. Breakout section required. The book isn't really good, but it's required in the department. I recommend her.
If math is your favorite subject than take her. Honestly i struggled most of the time because of the graded homework online really stressed me out! It made me more behind on the subject than i should be. It took hours trying to finish. Not an easy A type of class if you are looking for one. You really have to work for it.
this is really a class to avoid if you are not already good in math. many, many online homework problems that are timed, not to mention take hours to do and are not easy. goes through lectures fast and expects you to keep up. not straightforward, you gotta figure out how to work it out. really not an easy class to get a decent grade.
Ask questions. She's willing to help. Downside is homework. All of it is done online, but nowadays, anything is.
If you show up to her class w/ her notes, you learn the material very well. Her tests are similar to the homework. She drops your lowest test grade and replaces it w/ the final if it's higher. She uses an online site for homework. Quizzes every week. Highly recommend.
Way too much online homework, for me this homework takes 3 to 4 hours a section and she averages 4 sections a week. Class is large and hard to get help. She is also highly un-willing to help with conflicts of schedule, even for school related events.
Lectures are dull and boring. Tests and quizzes are hard. Gives homework through webassign which routinely gives bad/incorrect scores.
She's really kind & helpful. I generally spend 10+ hrs a wk just to get a B. She gives good, but dry, lectures (What do you expect out of math?). HW and WEEKLY quizzes are really hard, but the tests are a lot easier. 3 tests a semester and a final. Most useful resource: TA! I go to reviews b4 every tests. REALLY HELPFUL! All in all, I recommend her
TAKING MATH 181 WITH THIS TEACHER WILL BE THE BIGGEST MISTAKE OF YOUR LIFE. HER TESTS ARE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT, THEY ARE NOTHING COMPARE TO THE ACTUAL WORK SHE DOES IN CLASS. SHE HAS NO INTEREST IN HER STUDENTS PASSING. SHE SETS EVERYONE UP FOR FAILURE. I'M A BIO MAJOR AND DONT RECOMMEND ANY ONE WHO NEEDS THIS CLASS FOR GRAD SCHOOL TO TAKE IT W/ HER
She is not a good teacher at all. She explains the material ok but the tests are nothing like what she teaches. Tests are not very hard but they way she grades makes the tests harder than they actually are.
Math 181 isn't too difficult if you take the take the time to learn it. However, that won't be your problem in this class. The problem is how strict she is with grading. It's ridiculous. For example, for one of the exam questions, I did everything right and got the right answer, but she marked off a lot because she didn't like the way it was done.
Go to class & recitation everyday. Incentives exist for people who do that. The in class examples are nothing like the quizzes & tests. Do the homework to get better, study quizzes for exams, then study quizzes & exams for the final. This class is very easy if you study.
She's a wonderful teacher. The way she explains things is just so much easier than other professors I've taken math with. Her grading is VERY unforgiving, though. She's upfront with her expectations, weekly quizzes in recitation are done in groups, and iclicker is mandatory for attendence. VERY helpful in office hours.
By far the most level-headed, organized, and experienced math instructor at UNLV. Her style of teaching Calculus is extremely applicable to students. About her grading techniques: It's just like any other instructor's. You're in college now, tests are going to be difficult. The homework, although quite lengthy at times, is very helpful.
I failed the first exam and was quite distraught but Professor Bellomo is really nice and she helped me figure out what I was doing wrong, etc. Webassign is annoying but I found it helpful. Also she has a grade replace program thing which made my final grade an A regardless of my failed exam! Plus she is a native English speaker!
Best math teacher I have had. Extremely helpful. Cares about her students. Web assign can be long, but it is extremely helpful. Can be hard class but her practice tests are basically her tests.
Never opened my $210 math book, and needed a $30 I-clicker. I took this class previously in high school so it was a good refresher course. Like all professors, the hw is harder than the in-class examples. She hates being emailed "stupid" questions. I don't think attendance should be mandatory AT ALL. Don't buy text, just Webassign.
Tough but fair. The quizzes are actually more difficult than the exams, but the quizzes are collaborative so pick smart friends! Exams are straightforward if you know what to look for. She gives you what you need, just pay attention. Tough grader as well, but, the incentives she gives for attendance and such make it worth going to every class.
Serious class but she makes math as clear a good teacher should. My notes from her lectures were sufficient to get me through just about every homework assignment without having to teach myself much and she doesn't give trick questions like so many of my teachers. Really great.
Very nice teacher. She grades fairly but make sure to be well prepared for tests. If you deserve to be marked down for a small mistake, you will be marked down. Assignments can get pretty long and difficult but she wants her students to succeed and be prepared for tests. Study guides are given and they do help but you need to put the work in.
She is just amazing, Take her
Mrs. Bellomo always goes the extra mile for her students. Take her to see for yourself how she's always listens to her students complaintsconcerns and is always trying to improve her class and teaching methods. Not to mention that she has a sense of humor that makes class fun.
Honestly, she's the only calc professor at UNLV who actually cares about her students success and learning. I wouldn't say she's the best teacher, but she tries to offer as much help as she can, and she's always willing to do what benefits her students best.
Be prepared to have an iClicker! She may or may not remember to let the bookstore know so just get one anyway. 2 Grading systems so you can pick if you want to show up or not. 4 Tests and a final. Weekly quizzes are given by the TA but she does not empower them to be able to teach material. If you take the HW option, be prepared for 30+ questions.
I loved everything about this class. The only variable in this class is you. I got a 100% on the final which shows that my hard work was represented by my grade. She provides everything you need to pass. the sample quizzes and tests demonstrate every kind of question you will find on the tests. Study the chapter tests and you will be prepared.
Dr. Bellomo is incredibly helpful. She is very in-touch with her students and really does her best to strategically mold her class so that her students efficiently learn and understand calculus. Lots of homework, weekly quizzes are tough. Put in the work, you'll get the grade. A top-notch professor.
I came into Calculus scared to death but Professor Bellomo made Calculus so easy that I was actually into it. As long as you do your homework in a timely manner, the exams shouldn't be too difficult. Be sure to stay on track!!
I was scared to take Calc but Professor Bellomo made it so easy. She makes sure that everyone understands the material, and even makes practice tests for the upcoming tests we take. I would have gotten a higher grade, but I slacked off too much. Regardless, it's easy to pass with a B if you pay attention and ask questions!!!
Professor Bellomo made Calculus easy to understand. There are 4 chapter tests and a final. Before each chapter test, she gives out chapter quizzes that closely assign to the actual test. There are three different grading options to choose from. If you choose the hw option, expect to work about 30-60 problems a week.
This teacher was the right pick for me. I was a bit cautious going into a lower math class that the atmosphere wouldn't feel right or that one teacher and ten students wasn't a well mix. Man was I way off, this teacher was great and there's a second teacher in the class too and she makes sure everyone finishes their assignments before leaving.
Calculus? Take Carryn. She genuinely cares about your success. Practices quizzes before every exam that are just like your exam with a change to numbers and such. Pick the option to do the homework. If you just do it (10 attempts), this part is an easy 100% which helps. Do the practice quizzes, pay attention and you can get that A.
Her class is designed for the A students & I mean that in a good way. For you to survive 181, you gotta have an EXCELLENT 126/127 background. I would admit that I was skeptical at first because I picked Dr. Robinette but her class was already full. Glad I'm in Dr. Bellomo's class because I'm getting an A, straight up. I highly recommend her.
Comparing the previous/latest reviews, you could tell that she improved a lot. But she talks like everybody is smart, so be sure you're good in 126/127. Do the HW, show up in class, participate in recitation, do the practice exams (very similar to actual), EASY A. 3 grading options based on your intellect. Gives extra credit to those who deserve it
Dr. Warren really cares about her students, however she does expect you to know Math 126/127, so be prepared! There's alot of WebAssign HW. I really appreciated her practice exams and group quizzes. Visit her office hrs and you'll realize she's human, and understands we have other difficult classes as well. Just be prepared to put in the work.
I love Dr. Warren so much. Out of any professor at UNLV, she is the one who inspired me that I am not too dumb or stupid for math and science. At the time, I was on academic probation and felt worthless. I had no major or direction. I took Calc to test myself. I got an A. Now, I am graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Has pdfs of class notes, puts up study guide versions for quizzes and tests! has open note group quizzes for discussion. attend class for sure. lots of homework. She's considerate, expects you to put in the work, can't take this class without a good foundation in algebra trig. Put in the effort with hw studying and you'll be set for Calc 2
Teaches you how to solve certain problems, but doesnt teach the concept. Makes the tests a lot harder than what she teaches.
She has 3 different grading scales you can pick from, I picked option 1 which includes 4 tests, 1 cumulative final, iClicker points, online HW, and team quizzes. This teacher is mediocre at best. She will teach, but it's pretty much just her showing you problems. You'll have to teach yourself. I just showed up for her attendance iclicker points.
She explains why she does what she does. Not just here do this and good luck. Like a good explanation to why she does what in math.
I was duped by the number of ppl that said they'd take her again. She's really nice and all but NO WAY. This was hard, her lectures are not helpful. Most important: the practice exams are NOTHING like her actual exams. Similar but WAY WAY harder. Just twisted enough to trip you up and put you into scratching your head mode. Not worth the stress. NO
Dr. Warren is the sweetest and most caring person. She wants everyone to pass and tries her best to work with students. This class should be an easy A if you actually study for it. Most students that complain about her are the ones that don't study. There are 4 tests, 1 final, attendance and hw(opt). 1 of the best math professors at UNLV. Easy A.
Gosh. I attend every single lecture just to watch her do nothing but write down problems and solutions. I spend every day and night RE-TEACHING myself each lesson, just to be tested on concepts nothing related to what she WROTE, and to lose half of my grade over setting up the problem wrong. I question why I wasted $800 and my sanity over this...
Definitely one of the better math professors. Took her twice (failed the first time) and I will say, if you do not put in the work and study this will be an awful class. If you study, attend class, and go to office hours, you will do fine. Practice tests are very similar to actual tests, only one very small change per test.
The best professor, so nice! I was afraid of calculus before but I ended up loving it after taking Dr. Warren's class. The best part was that Dr. Warren gave several practice tests for each exam which were similar to the real exam so that I was always 100% prepared for each type of question. Grading scale option choice, don't choose the online hw!
I took HON181 the semester before and I had to drop the class when I got a D. This sem I got a 100 on every exam in Dr. Warrens class. Personally, dont choose Webassign unless you really think you need that extra 10% because the exam looks EXACTLY like the practice exams. She doesnt really teach but put in effort and youll get an A. Take her!!
I took her 1 yr ago, and last semester, I knew 3 people that had her. All super intelligent, smart and none of them passed with a C or higher. We all have to re-take this $1,000, 4cr, Fri waste discussion class because she can't make an exam that is represented by her multiple "practice exams" fairly. She must write her own positive reviews on here
Here's the thing, she's not amazing at teaching the material itself. However, she does her best to reach out to students who need help- but personally, that was not enough for me to pass her class. Her exams look nothing like the examples and practice quizzes she gives. Prepare to fend for yourself if you take her.
This professor goes through the material really fast. It can be really hard to keep up even if you do attend class everyday.
Dr. Warren is an absolute gem of a professor. I agree with some of the reviews on here that she goes through material rather quickly, but its because she expects students to review on their own. Chapter Quizzes (nongraded) were outlined JUST like the test. Extremely helpful and approachable. TAKE OPTION 2 no homework! HW is a waste of time.
Carryn was an amazing professor in my opinion. If you skip class, be prepared to stare at a piece of paper on Fridays. I took her Mat181 prep class during the summer, and I did mediocrely. When I got to calculus 1, it was very difficult, but I continued to go to her office hours and tutoring after school. I started off slow but I ended w/ an A-.
If youre looking for a class Where you get example problems and no lecturing, Warrens class is for you. Her exams reflect chapter quizzes and practice quizzes but she doesnt actually lecture. Theres no explanation to why you get points off your tests, just a bunch of red pen underlining and circling things. Self teaching at its finest.
Dr. Warren is by far one of the one worst professors I have ever had. She is very condescending and makes her class extra hard for no reason. There is no rhyme or reason to her grading or why she is so rude. She does not lecture, only example problems. If you ask about a low grade she will regrade your test and " make sure theres points missing".
Not a good teacher, very rude and specifically told the class if you ask why points were taken off she will re grade and take more points off. Her social interaction with students is terrible. I would never recommend this teacher to anyone, if anything she should be teaching a different class or not teaching there at all. Downright awful.
Very confusing lectures and nearly impossible exams
She is a LAZY professor. She answers emails very late and also she isn't helpful outside of class. Avoid her if you can. She is also very unprofessional as you can hear her yawning or her child in the background during her online lectures. She genuinely doesn't care about teaching students and is not enthusiastic in what she teacher either.
I had to drop because her lectures were not matching up with the tests, homework, or quizzes at all. Then, halfway through the semester, she changed the ways we took tests because a couple students cheated. We then had to do both the written and WebAssign portions on webcam, scan every page of work we did and upload it, and do INTERVIEWS??!
I hated this class so much. Not only were the lectures and the notes unhelpful, the professor was useless outside of class. Just like the other comment, I thought it was annoying how the entire class was being punished because some people cheated. Random interviews?! Wack.I audited this course because I thought there was no way I was going to pass.
Honestly the worst professor I have ever had. She changes the layout of the tests completely in the middle of the semester. Does not communicate changes well and most importantly has EXTREMELY difficult tests. She gives you one hour to answer very long questions and it's not enough time. Her lectures are very weak and vaguely explain concepts.
The teacher posted single 10 minute videos covering one example problem per sub chapter. The exams were difficult, and consisted of 2-3 problems, graded on a scale of 100. Exams were monitored halfway through the semester-after she had realized most of the class was cheating to get by. However, no effort to teach more effectively was made.
small character limit, bear with me. poorly written syllabus, modules, & other documents. Confusion on all assignments, including discussion question section, book work photo submitted on one site, online work submitted on other site, unclear on how to submit work, lesson videos posted are of poor quality. work load is high, but not the main issue.
Overall a terrible experience, expects you to know everything taught in trig and past math courses. Tests make up all of your grade and her study guides do not match the tests. Written Homework is very tough and she does not help.
Video lectures are not efficient & provides minimal examples that you may not encounter on homework or tests. You have to take 2 tests, WebAssign and a written, where you have to explain your steps. There is also extra written homework every week. The workload is just excessive & you basically have to teach yourself. Would not recommend.
Pro tip: watch the Organic Chemistry Teacher instead of the lectures. HW was excessive but imo not too difficult. 4 exams + the final. No extensions but will move due dates per request. Some extra credit opportunities but don't rely on it. Annoying surveys every week, feels like busy work. Doable class, but I taught myself most of the material.
Her class is online and she's only online for 30 minutes. What am I even paying for at this point? Her lecture videos are NOWHERE helpful to the degree of problems she gives us. Useless surveys. Written HW is extremely difficult and little to no explanation is provided. Save ur money and time. Worst professor ever encountered.
This is a hard class, so if you expect to get an easy A then you might as well go somewhere else. Dr. Warren is a caring professor who is willing to teach you what you don't understand outside of class time, so if you put in the effort you can get an A in her class.
I had an Online class with her she was good at explaining her work, however, she is very tedious and wants you to present your work that is similar to hers. She also gives a lot of homework and is strict on explaining your work.
This professor is the worst. She gives us too much homework and makes us do a useless survey on how we are doing in the chapters, which doesn't help us. The chapter tests are extremely tedious because you only get 1 hr to finish it and submit your work in. Never take her again if I have to have another math class with her.
Took her class thinking it was going to be very interesting and great because I love math. But her class made me hate math. She gives us so much homework and makes us take useless surveys that don't help us. If you get some written homework wrong you will get terrible feedback from her and her TA. Don't take her class if you just want to pass.
Worst Math Professor Ever!
Never take her class she gives to much homework and has a strict way of grading your work.
Never take this professor if you want to pass calculus. She gives too much homework and makes you do the homework in a certain way that she wants you to do it. If you do the work incorrectly even though you got the correct answer she or the T.A. will give you a 0.
I hated her class so much. She gives terribly written homework questions and makes you explain your work how she wants you to do it, and if you don't do your work in the way she wants you to do it she will give you a zero even if you get the correct answer.
Gives too much homework and you have to explain your work in their terms or they will give you a zero for your written homework and for your exams.
I took her class thinking that it would be easy considering that I took calculus before and almost passed it however her class was way more difficult than I expected. She gives way too much homework and makes you do the homework in her way and if you don't she will give you a zero even if you get the correct answer.
Gives to much homework don't take her.
If you are about to take calculus with this teacher. good luck cause you are gonna need it.
Overall the professor was great but if you aren't ready to put in the work you will fail the class. You CAN'T cheat your way through this class because when you do your mathematical steps you have to explain in words what you are doing for each step. If you aren't able to explain you will get a 0, even if the answer and your steps were right.
Professor Warren was so awesome! Response time was quick, she kept everyone posted on everything, and lectures were short and to the point. Nothing she did was made too difficult to understand, she taught you what you needed and nothing more.
Worst experience I've had at UNLV. The whole semester (SP22) it seems like she was trying to get retribution on the people who were cheating in her class the semester before. Crazy rules and insanely hard. Took Calc1 before with a dif prof but somehow got a worse grade with her. Her kid would run around making noises during lectures. Unprofessional
She did not start lecturing until 2 weeks before the final. She does not go over homework nor provide explanations about how she wants the questions to be solved. I would highly recommend NOT to choose her as a teacher.
She decided to change to a flipped class model this semester. Lecture videos/notes at home, homework done in class. Didn't work out well and learning was made rather difficult for many people. HScalc teacher had better lectures and teaching. Dr. Warren is okay person but a bit stubborn and winged it a lot. Math department sucks at unlv in general.
Like the previous review, she used a flipped classroom model this semester with videos from the pandemic that you could barely hear and basically had three discussions per week. You were supposed to help others in class and do the CLASS homework where everyone contributes to the grade. Eventually she would do lectures which very unorganized.
She tried a flipped schedule during the semester and it just didn't work out. During the first half of the semester, she literally didn't teach us in the class unless we asked her directly. She would upload video of the notes which were okay at best. It only took a class survey to see what issues we had. By then it was too late for many. Skip.
definition of teaching for a paycheck. never actually taught, she made us take a weekly required survey about our progress in class in which she never followed up on, and would never respond to emails until you email her boss about her lack of communication. if you've taken her, just report her to the math department like the rest of us please.
Because of her flipped classroom style, she is rarely of any help. She requires weekly surveys which are a total waste of time. she is very paranoid about cheating so she will require you to use lockdown browser (literally malware) for tests. Her lecture videos do not cover enough to know everything you need to know. I would avoid her at all costs.
I had this professor at UNLV in the spring and she was by far the best math professor I have ever had at UNLV. Many of the negative things in previous reviews she stopped doing when I took her which I think says a lot. I got the impression that she really cared about her students doing well and did whatever she could to help us do better.
Although the tests are not difficult, she assigns way too much textbook work, averaging 120 homework problems a week, all for quizzes only worth 20% of our grade. She claims it facilitates our learning, but I believe that assigning half the problems would facilitate as much learning without having so much stress from homework.
I had Warren for only a month. She goes through 3 lectures per week with only 2 days per week of seeing her, and she assigns around 105 questions of homework per week, 35 per lecture. The workload is very heavy, but she is very caring and is willing to help as long as you see her during office hours.
The class was tough, with a lot of homework and strict grading. The flipped learning model didn't work well, and lectures were disorganized. However, using unstuck AI and other study resources like ChatGPT helped me stay on top of the material. Overall, a challenging but manageable class.
All lectures and notes are available online, but going to lectures also helps. We got homework scores added to the overall average and the system to do this was clear and helpful. Some extra credit opportunities - TAKE THEM. Exams were somewhat hard but if you went through online material, it wasn't impossible. Lenient with grading.
She assigns over 100 problems a week and makes a 4 question quiz on it. However she also offers test redos, drops two lowest hw quiz grades, an optional 5th test to boost grades, and a minimum c- for following a set criteria. Her lectures are more solving example problems than teaching. Its a hard class but theres lots of opportunity to fix a grade
