This is a really good class if you are, or arn't, going into a design related major. Sis. Esplin is very talented with design and is very easy to get along with. The projects you design test your creative skills and time management. Just follow the rules of design and you'll get good grades.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. She is great, but very strict and professional.
Esplin is arguably the best Visual Media teacher. Her grasp of the Adobe suite is impressive. Probably the most helpful teacher I had, she wants her students to succeed. As long as you dont procrastinate your weekly assignments, the class is a blast.
I agree with the other comment. Sister Esplin is one of the best teachers that i have had. She is very strict about deadlines and very helpful in her teaching. This class will provide you with a strong foundation in visual media skills.
Make sure you schedule out time to work on your projects, and if you have to use your muligan tell her before class or else she won't accept your project... very good teacher, enjoybable class. I highly recommend it!
She is the best
super helpful, super friendly, just awesome all around. i've never heard otherwise.
Wow..she's like my fav teacher now! She has a lot of assignments, but she explains everything really well and is so helpful in class. She is the sweetest lady and is always smiling! :-) I definetly recommend her!!!
visual media is a fun class! she always ties in her lectures to spirital things. her class is hard but it is possible to get a good grade. just read the requirements and set aside lots of time of work on the projects. the computer lab can be busy so make sure your scedule is flexible.
She is so awesome and so willing to help. The requirements are clear and easy to follow. Just make time to work on assignments!
I loved loved loved this class!! Sis Esplin is one of the best teachers I have ever had. She is so positive, and I appreciate the way she teaches so much! She really loves the material, and it makes such a difference.
She is an excellent teacher! She knows her stuff, is very talented, and really wants you to learn. She will help you as much as you need. She grades tough though, so put a lot of time into your projects!
she knows her materials and is willing to help but is not at all lenient when it comes to deadlines. I had surgery during the course and I turned in one of my rough drafts early but I only got 1/2 credit because I wasn't in class. She is WAY too strict.
Esplin is an amazing teacher! Her focus is on helping students succeed. She does expect you to be punctual, but she will do everything in her power to teach you and to help you!
She does not explain the assignments well and it is difficult to accomplish the projects to her exact liking. No tolerance for creativity.
There is none better than Sister Esplin. By far the best teacher I ever had in all my college career! Take anything from her; you won't regret it. She cares about you as a person, not just as another student. You'll never regret taking her class! She's amazing!
Esplin is hands down one of the best teachers I've ever had. Very easy to understand what she expects and how to do it. Great, great teacher. I highly recommend her.
Sister Esplin truly cares about her students, and does her best to understand them. She is always willing to help and explain assignments. Her grading system is very detailed, so you will always know what grade you will get. She is a very talented professor, and loves sharing her talent with her students. HIGHLY recommended!
Be careful about your subject matter. Make sure you follow directions perfectly, otherwise you'll probably fail. Her courses are about following directions, not producing quality work. Her grading methods could use some help.
Students complain if a teacher is not clear. But when a teacher lays our exactly what he/ she wants for a class they also get bashed- it's beyond me. I love Esplin! She is organized and willing to help- Anytime. She has you follow her directions exactly so she can grade more objectively. I would recommend her to anyone interested in visual media!
SIster Esplin is one of the best teachers on campus. She tells you everything that she wants and expects. She gives you the grading sheet so you know what you have to do. I love her. She truly cares about you and is willing to do things for you. She is VERY knowledgeable. you will not regret taking her.
BEST TEACHER EVER!!! I would take every class I could from her!! She is absolutely amazing. She is so helpful and so understanding. She teaches so well and truly cares for her students. I asked her questions about my job when I was off track and she was more than willing to help. Be prepared to work and learn a TON!! Esplin ROCKS!!
She really knows her stuff. She gives you a rubric but sometimes takes points off for things not in the rubric. She is a tough grader. It is possible to get 100% on some projects, but difficult. Be sure you give her what she wants.
A Gifted and Talented Professor. She's a perfectionist but it's necessary for Visual Media. In this class you will learn InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator so fast and so effectively that you won't know what hit you. Visit her office for critiques on each project. If you follow her advice you can expect an A or A-. I highly recommend her.
Extremely helpful! Easy to meet with for critique. Gives out cell phone number for help. One of the BEST teachers i've had!
Sister Esplin is a great person. She has a heart of gold. She is a hard teacher however. She expects a lot from her students and you will spend a lot of time outside of class in the lab. . This class was a huge challenge but was rewarding. She is top notch on the visual media subject so if you want an easy teacher she is not right for you.
I took lots of classes from her and I consider her the best teacher of the basics of Adobe Creative Suite I've ever seen. She is a tough grader but definitely not impossible to please. My only complaint is that some of the web standards she teaches in her advanced classes are outdated. She may have changed since I took classes from her, however.
This class is great. It does go very fast and it's just an overview of the Adobe Suite. If you have little to no experience with the program you will spend extra time for your homework. Very rewarding class and Sis. Esplin is always available to help and give pointers. She is quick to respond to emails too. She is amazing!
She teaches a great course and it's never not interesting. However, she's way strict and has teacher's pets which can get really annoying. You'll learn and it's not too hard, but if you're not creative like she wants you to be she'll grade you low.
Caryn Esplin is one of the greatest professors on campus. I challenge you to evaluate the amount of work she puts in the course compared to your other teachers on campus. She is demanding but has a personality that brings out the best work in her students. Those who struggle or are bitter... Are those who fail to read and follow project directions.
Caryn is an amazing teacher! Taking this course changed my life, I learned more in this class than many of my college courses combined. She is more than willing to help you at any time and will go out of her way to make sure you understand. Her classes are challenging, but rewarding! Invigorating subject, wonderful teacher, excellent role model.
Sister Esplin is a great teacher! If you get a chance to take a class from her consider yourself lucky! Seriously one of the best COMM teachers. I had her for COMM 130 Visual Media and it was great! Hopefully I will get to take a class from her in the future.
She is a super nice lady. BUT I'm truly baffled by all the glowing reviews. She only teaches ONE way, HER way. It's not about learning design, it's about following instructions. It's incredibly easy to get an "A" and learn nothing, and it's a guarantee that you'll only learn one (often inferior, ex. DFM) way of doing things.
I just found a job due to my visual comm classes from Caryn Esplin. She stays up on the latest skills and industry standards, which put me way ahead of the competition. I found I was much better prepared than the Art students, so I highly recommend the Visual Comm emphasis in the BYU-Idaho Comm Dept
It is so rare to find a teacher like Caryn Esplin. She is so full of passion for design and photography and she stays up on the latest trends. She takes a group of students to Photoshop World, which opens up a whole new world of job opportunities for us. Esplin rocks!
Caryn Esplin is the best person to be teaching photography at BYU Idaho. She keeps up with the latest trends and stays up late every night working to improve all of her classes. She is truly one of a kind and knows her stuff. She expects a lot, but there is no reason why you shouldnt do the work. She expects a lot because that is how you learn!!!
Amazing women! I have learned so many valable real life skills from this class. It is not just photography, it is SEO, building a business and building a website. I not only improved my photography skills I learned how to make money off of them. She is so talented and up-to-date.She is passionate and cares so much about her students.Loved the class
I loved being in Sister Esplin's class. I went in not wanting anything to do with Photography, and just taking the class because I had to. It ended up being my favorite class. I'd never really done Photography before, but she got me interested and loving it. Great teacher! Very highly recommended!
Caryn Esplin is the best and her class has been a life changer. She really cares and goes to extra work to take you on photo excursions, give helpful feedback and teach the latest skills. I am making a lot of money with my photography thanks to what she taught me. She will push you to improve, but if you are teachable, you will love it.
She hard to impress but she knows what she is doing and she is a good teacher. She will help you if you are struggling and is always very nice and professional.
Take every class you can from Esplin. There is no one who puts more effort into her teaching. You will learn exactly the skills you need without busy work. I learned more from this one class than I did in five photo classes in the art department. She recognizes you for good work and really cares about every student.
She as an individual is nice. As for her class, biggest regret ever. If you want to "succeed" in this class, then forget about being creative. If you aren't a great photographer, that's fine. Cover up your lack of skill using HDR. Don't think about pushing the boundaries creatively. You want a quality design/photo class? go to the ART DEPARTMENT.
I learned more in this one imaging class than i did in all my other photo classes COMBINED. The Art Dept. teaches theory and old-school methods. It was the skills I learned in Comm 300 that helped me land an actual job. Esplin is a professional and can do it all. Just check out her website and you will see the difference. Best class, best teacher.
This was my favorite class at BYU-I. All the projects were great. I loved the weekly photo blog and I got to frame a large fine art print and display it in the Spori. Sister Esplin taught us basic photo skills to get amazing shots without editing, but also taught us creative skills in Photoshop. She really cares and knows her stuff.
This was my favorite class this semester by far. Esplin is an amazing teacher and very clear in her course projects and instructions. If you read and listen you will be rocking your camera and getting great images. She knows her stuff and is a caring teacher who really tries to help her students. She is fair and you can talk to her.
Loved the class and all the tutorials. I now have a passion for photography. I learned so much and it was busy, but if you are struggling just go in during office hours and she will help. Her TA is great too. I have an amazing photobook portfolio and photo blog. Esplin's website shows what you can learn from her, so check it out!
Esplin's a pro and easily one of the top professors in the country. We are lucky to have her at byui. This class is all hands on photo excursions and has been life changing for all of us in the class. Not just professional photography, but life lessons learned. It's hard to get in to one of her classes, but find a way and you'll never regret it.
Hard. She expects a lot out of you which can be bad and good. Meeting requirements for an assignment is a 80%. She is very helpful. I would recommend forming a good personal relationship with her early in the semester. She is a great teacher and very fun to be around.
Don't take this class. Even if you're beyond passionate about photography, don't take this class. There are way too many assignments, beyond impossible expectations, and the tendency to squash your own personal style to fit the mold and receive a good grade. There was a lot of doing things 'one way' and no other. She also can be a bit manipulative.
She is an amazing professor. Though the class may be tough, you learn so many good things. It's refreshing to have a professor who is also in the field and is so passionate. She is so willing to work with you, and if you do the work then a good grade is pretty much guaranteed. I would definitely recommend taking any class from her. Inspirational.
Best class I've taken. Esplin really cares about students. I wish more courses were designed like this. Grading was fair and prompt with lots of feedback before final grades were assigned. I learned so much and loved the projects.
Esplin is the best. She inspires me to learn and helped me land an awesome job. She cares about students and will teach you about real life skills and professional visual communication. Her courses are well balanced and fair. This course a good balance and incredible hands-on learning experiences. TAKE ANY CLASS YOU CAN FROM ESPLIN. She is a pro!
Esplin takes hands-on learning to a new level. I can now take professional portraits, killer product shots, and fine art landscapes. She shows you SEOsecrets and you end up with a pro website that ranks high in Google. She scaled back the requirements but you still get the goods. 316 will teach you so much more than photography. Get in if you can
Super inspiring teach. Love her students like her children. Always willing to talk and help.
Most inspiring instructor at BYU-Idaho. She expects a lot but she gives even more. She just held the final presentations class at her home. Who does that? She is the most caring, helpful, professional teacher you could have. I learned more in this one hands-on class than all others I took this semester combined. Take anything you can from Esplin.
She is the best teach I have ever had! She is sweet and give fantastic feedback.
I took Comm 300 and Comm 316 from Esplin while at BYU-I. She was the most caring and professional and inspiring professor at BYU-Idaho. Now I have graduated and I realize just how beneficial her courses were, including Comm 130, where she authored the textbook. What I have learned from her, changed my life and now my career.
Caryn Esplin has changed my life. Don't miss taking from her. She takes time to show off student work, build confidence and teach through hands on . I am never a pet, but she really cares about everyone. She pushes us to grow and explains why and how. You will learn more than you could imagine, but not because you have to, Because you will want to
Esplin inspired me to learn new ways to market my personal style of photography. She taught me SEO secrets which put my images in the top of a search with 111 million hits! This landed me a job and now I do SEO marketing for my company. She is real-life professional photographer who cares about every student and helps them find profitable careers
Sister Esplin is just amazing! The passion she has for helping us succeed is unbelievable and the way she teaches is just top notch. I love how much she cares for each and every student and how much I grew as a photographer, but as a person as well. The charisma she brings to her class and the excursion make this class a blast!
Take any course you can from Esplin. This class is well structured and I love that we got hands on time with cameras and programs each class. Esplin is always looking for ways to improve and you can tell she really cares about every student. She inspired me. I don't know any other teach who holds contests, gives prizes, and displays student work
Loved this handson class. Esplain cares about helping each student with their own style. She promoted our best photos on her FB and it helped me get a job, even though I was not the best student. She loans her gear out and gives students her books for free . She is a pro who's not full of herself. Check out her instagram w 20 k follows
Esplin puts so much into her class and teaching. She inspired me to work as hard as she does and it paid off. I found an excellent visual media career with the photo, design and social media skills I learned from her. Best class at BYU-I
Simply life-changing. Take anything you can from Esplin. Her courses & teaching are professional, because she keeps up her website and social. She appreciated my style even though it was different from hers. I built and refined my website, SEO, and business marketing plan in Comm 300 and 316 which helped me land a paid Visual Comm / Marketing job.
Best. Learning. Experience. Ever. We do hands-on photography in class. The macro day was sick. Her advanced class is in such high demand and now I know why. Her teaching style inspired me to be my best and I know I will use these skills in any career and life. The photobook is a great portfolio for interviews. Everyone should take Comm 300!!!
I was skeptical at first but she proved to really care about all her students and be the best teacher I have had at BYU-I. I can't believe how much I have learned this semester
Sister Esplin is great. Sometimes her class can be a little intimidating, but she's really kind and caring. She knows how to teach photography for sure. She tells really amazing stories that bring the Spirit into class as well. She also created the Visual Comm emphasis so that's pretty cool!
Sis Esplin is so funny and very nice. It seems like there is a lot of homework at the beginning of the semester, but once you get the hang of the schedule, it's actually not very much. I knew nothing about photography at the start of class and ended with a very good knowledge of all the settings. And how to manually set my camera in any environment
I admire Sister Esplin greatly! She is admirable, and I look up to her greatly. She is amazing, and I'm sad to hear that she is retiring soon. She is a lovely person and is so creative and inspirational! The class was amazing and I loved all the hands-on work we did, as well as the critique she gave. She's very personable and hands down the best!
Sister Esplin is by far my favorite teacher I have had at BYUI. She makes every student feel loved and is always willing to go the extra mile to help a student. COMM 300 and COMM 316 were extremely structured course with clear expectation. It may seem intense at first but seriously is manageable. If I was able to do these courses so can you.
Sister Esplin has been one of my favorite professors! She is a very talented photographer and wants to pass on all her knowledge to her students. She shows off the work of her students on social media and helps her students to realize their talents. She really helped me to refine my photography skills and I enjoyed this class so much.
Sister Esplin is decently nice. I definitely feel like she has favorites and if youre a quieter person, she wont interact with you much. I do not recommend taking professional imaging from her if you are somewhat good at photography already. I learned hardly anything about commercial photography. YouTube would do the job.
This should've been an easy A for someone thats so passionate about photography but with her teaching this is HARD to get an A unless youre one of her favoirtes. You can't have your own style in this class, she makes exceptions for nothing, even if youre sick. She is VERY manipulative as well. I expected more. Sad to say this about my fav subject
It was an absolute pleasure to learn from someone as successful and lovely as Sister Epsilon. Some professors don't have professional experience but sister Epsilon is the most qualified Professor I had. People pay thousands to learn from her and she is so kind and funny and really want you to be creative! You learn a lot and there is no busy work!
i love sister esplin she is so kind and always is smiling and she knows what she is doing and will share lots of great skills. very encouraging as well she will tell you she loves your work. great soul
Caryn Esplin knows the industry and has real-life experience. She helped me get an excellent photography- design job! She ties every lessons into a gospel topics and class is never boring. The only problem is, she is retiring and the other teachers are terrible, so most of my friends are switching degrees. Sad, but I am so happy I found her!
Sister Esplin is the BEST! She knows what she is doing and teaches you the necessary skills to become a professional. I feel uplifted and inspired by taking her class! One of the best teachers I have had at BYUI!
Caryn Esplin is an amazing teacher and person. She works hard with and for you and will do her best to help you get the highest grade you can in this class. Just be clear that attendance is a mandatory thing, and that you will have blogs that you have to work on, but those are all easy to do. If you take this class I guarantee you will learn tons!!
Comm 300 might be the greatest class I have taken in my 4 years at BYU-I and it would not be the same without Caryn Esplin. From day one I could see how passionate she was about photography and not to mention very experienced. I enjoyed her teaching style with it being both instructional and hands-on. The projects are fun and push your creativity!
Caryn Esplin is immensely talented and one of my favorite professors I have ever had! One of my favorite things about her teaching style is that she gives really good feedback. My photography improved so much through her! Also, she is so caring to her students. An amazing person and an amazing teacher!
Sister Esplin has definitely been my favorite professor! She brings in the gospel to everything we do and always inspirational insight to start the class. She knows what she is talking about and gives great critic. I wish I could take more classes from her.
I took back to back semesters with her and I absolutely loved what I learned and how much I grew during these past semesters. She did a great job teaching the curriculum and giving us opportunities to express our own styles in each project. The assignments took time but produced quality.
I LOVED Sister Esplin and learned so so much about photography from her. This was her last semester teaching but she is an absolutely amazing teacher who helped me learn so so much.
