Actually likes the subject he teaches. Makes class interesting. Nice.
He's excellent. Doesn't get any better than this.
He looked pretty metal when I had him. He had long hair and talked about Pantera once. Casey is probably one of my favorite professors I have ever had. He's sincere and can teach like a motha sucka. I got an A, because he was that interesting. I'm not a good student, he's just a good teacher.

Casey is a really nice guy and the class is really easy. I had him 3 hours straight and it was fine, which is hard to do. Just take good notes either from him or from the book, it's the same really.
Casey is young, entertaining and real. Small group can be really challenging because a majority of your group depends on your group that you are placed with at the beggining of the semester, but the field work really helps to bring the classroom lectures to life. Study hard for the tests and apply yourself in the small groups and you will do fine.
He's a nice guy and really is interested and passionate about the subject. His lecture is very clear and his outlines are very good. I didn't have a hard time in there at all. He's pretty finicky about group projects though. He isn't a very entertaining teacher and I was bored a lot during his lecture bc he talks the entire time and tells the same
I love this professor.
He's a good teacher - but his class is hard! I learned more in his class than most of my other proffs - but my grade was lower.
Enthusiastic and passionate about what he teaches. He relates our everyday lives to what we are learning.
He is a great teacher and this is an easy class... study a little bit and go to class
He's a very good teacher with a lot of passion for what he teaches, which is engaging. But whatever you do, read carefully on attendance!!
Chilton is an awesome teacher. he cares alot about what he teaches and his students as well. you must go to class though and study for the tests. easy a with effort.
Casey was a really nice and down to earth guy. This class is very easy, all you have to do is either listen to him OR read the book, he isn't trying to trip you up with trick questions. An interesting thing about him is he is afraid of public speaking but he masters his fear to lecture. I think that is a recommendation in itself.
Casey is very nice, intelligent, and fair. He has a very high amount of understanding of the subject matter and knows how to present the material in ways that can be understood.
great and nice guy. does as much as he can to help you do your best. if you don?t resist the class itself, and you follow him through the course, you should be quite successful in your participation.
He is an awesome professor. He LOVES what he teaches and it shows. He is very specific and clear during his lectures and he makes sure that you understand everything before moving on.
Chilton is really nice. My small group- group was IMPOSSIBLE, but he took the time to work with all of us individually. He works with you to make sure you will do well. His tests come directly from his reviews, I based all my notes from his power point. Very little I had to look up. He does not want anyone to do bad.
A great Professor, very passionate, uses stories from his own life to relate to the subject matter.
He is a GREAT teacher! He WILL NOT try to trick you or make life difficult, he is VERY fair and discusses everything in class that will be on the test. If you study you can do very well, but you need to study. He loves his job and the classes he teaches. Very helpful and he wants everyone to do well.
Passionate about subject, wants his students to succeed, values input and questions. Overall everything I could ask for in a professor. SO HELPFUL and CLEAR. Tests required studying and critical thinking, but he was ALWAYS open for questions and discussions and always offered positive criticism. Thank you for reminding me why I'm a COMM major!

If you can take another professor!
Yeah I have mixed feelings. He is obviously excited about what he does, but he can be a little ridiculous sometimes. For instance, do not ever be late...ever! He will fail you for attendance. He did it to my husband. The class is ok overall. Take notes and study. Tests are mc/short essay. One group presentation.
he really LOVESSSS his job way to much and he was crazy aboit attendance, being on timeand cell phone...actually all electronics. he was pretty mean i had a bad experience
He is a really intersting and guy, kind of a nerd, but it makes the class fun. He is very good at explaining things that go on in class, but it is important to atleast open the book a few times before the test. You don't have to read the whole chapters. It was a pretty easy class.
I have mixed feelings on this guy. I took him for Interpersonal Comm, and he obviously loves what he does. He is extremely anal, though. You fail his class if you have just one outstanding grade, and he's harsh on attendance. Dude runs hot and cold.
He's extremely nice and helpful, but he grades papers and tests pretty harsh. I studied my butt off for his tests thinking I made at least an 85 or above and was always disappointed to see I only got something in the 70s range. Same goes for papers, I would spent a ton of time writing them only to get a 70. But as a person he's a cool dude!
Awful! I cannot seem to get interested in ANY of his lectures to save my life. He is the most boring teacher I've had yet. He's very full of himself & loves his job entirely too much (yes, there is such a thing). The only reason I'm in his class is because all of the other classes were either full or confilcted with my schedule.
I took his class for interpersonal comm. and he requires alot of partner activities. Well, my partner dropped the class halfway through our project and when I turned it in, he took points off for not having a partner... NOT MY FAULT
I think he loves what he does but does not love to help students this is not the guy to take if you need understanding. his personal stories are boring and usually one sided and failing his class is very easy to do passing not so much. i dont recommend taking him
Chilton is very passionate about what he does, and he is very prepared for class. He always says he is available to talk and help students. However, he is a very harsh grader, and his tests are 25% short answer, and are very difficult. His homework is rather easy. It's a class you can do well in, but can easily fail if you miss assignments.
Chilton is my favorite teacher on this campus yet! He is willing to work with you if you put forth the effort to ask for help. Easy A as long as you do the work and take good notes. Reviews are VERY helpful and he will answer any of your questions. He keeps class interesting and shows relevant video clips. I plan to take him for small groups too!
Makes clear what is expected from his students. If you do what is asked of you, you will receive an A. The review covers everything that will be on his tests. If you come to class and pay attention you will have a good experience.
He is very knowledgeable about the subject, & plays videos to help you understand concepts. However, he gave us two projects. the first one, was a research paper, & it was the first time he had given it. 5 out of 6 groups failed. the second one was an informercial & he didn't explain much. He grades REALLY hard and is very vague and sometimes moody
Loved this course! His class is easy as long as you pay attention and show up. You can only have 2 absenses and then he starts taking points off your grade. There is one major partner assignment. I believe my group is the only one that passed this semester. He gives you word for word what he wants. Follow directions and it's an easy A.
I took Chilton for Interpersonal Comm and thought he was a great professor, however I would NOT recommend him for Small Group Comm. Although the instructions seemed clear, in our second project, 4 out of 6 groups got a D. His grading standards for the course seemed tailored to graduate students versus undergrads. If you care about GPA, don't do it.
I had Chilton for small group, which was great and I made a B, but his passion is Communication Research Methods. His test are easy, but he grades on a point scale, and test are worth 10% of overall grade. If you want to make an A in this class don't take him. If you want to struggle for a B or C, go right ahead!! Majority of class makes B or C!!
Although he seems very knowledgable and prides himself on structure, he grades extremely hard and explains projects in a way that makes very little sense. Tons of paperwork involved with vague explanations. He doesn't seem to like students much and doesn't seem to care about concerns. Lot of students in my class got Cs and Ds. Would not recommend.
Great professor. LOVES what he teaches. Shares stories to help you understand. Welcomes discussion. If you attend class and participate you will do well. If you don't understand something he is willing to help you even during non-office hours. If you are looking for an easy A, this is not the class for you. He wants you to learn and think.
ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. You only have 2 absences that he allows. Also, if you like taking notes on your iPad, Computer, or ANYTHING electronic... Think again. You will be docked 20 points if he sees anything electronic during his class. And you want to keep all the points you can. His grading is brutal. Good guy, not the best professor.
Chilton is a challenge! I'm currently taking him for Research Methods and I can say his tests are hard but fairly easy if you study. Attendance IS mandatory and it's true, he rates harshly. But if you study enough you'll be good.
Took him for Interpersonal Comm and he is very passionate and has a way to make you understand everything! his tests are hard though, KNOW how to apply all theories to real life scenarios or you'll fail. But he's a great grader for essays!! If you ask, he will help you out a lot. his class is very discussion-based so PARTICIPATE!
Empiric Research. Perhaps the most pompous, rude, condescending, low immediacy professors at this school, but definitely in this department. Makes things unduly confusing, grades as though it is a graduate course, counts you absent for leaving even 2 min early or being 2 min late, has no genuine interest in helping students. Truly bitter person.
He has very clear expectations. He has lots of examples of concepts to help you understand. If you need help he is willing to meet with you.
Chilton is one of the best professors i have taken at Texas State. He is very structured and a lot of students don't like him because he does not make exceptions to his rules. Follow the syllabus and any instructions explicitly, participate in class, and do the study guide and his class will be a breeze.
Chilton is a good teacher, but his expectations are a little unreasonable. He doesn't seem to like students or show any kind of care or support for anyone's education. He does love what he teaches. He grades very hard.
Great instructor. Never seen someone so organized. He enjoys what he teaches. He might not enjoy your excuses as much. Come prepared and know your schedule as well as he does and you'll get a B or higher without a problem.
Chilton is very interesting and loves what he teaches. He is super passionate and there for you if you need some clarity. His expectations are VERY clear, so PLEASE follow directions. You do need to attend and must read the book to pass due to his "talking points". I hated the project he assigned, and graded too hard on it which resulted to my B+
I am currently taking Chilton for Empirical Research Methods. The class in itself is extremely challenging, but he grades incredibly hard as well. Almost even unreasonable, considering we are not experts in this material. He is passionate about his job, but shows no immediacy towards students.
Biggest regret I've made, he makes the class much more boring than it actually is, tests are extremely difficult and tricky not related to the review in any way. Very tough grader. If you want to make a C get ready for a very tough time, for an A? Ha forgot about it
Professor Chilton is alright . If you miss over 2 classes you will get points taken off your final grade. He really wants you to do well but does not give you the right tools to do so. I give him a C- and will not be taking him EVER again.
Professor Chilton is great! Comm 3301 is a very difficult class but he is there to help you. He really enjoys the topic and teaching! You have 3 exams, a research paper, daily assignments you turn in, and a few quizzes.
Professor Chilton really loves his job and is passionate about it. He is very goofy but such a great professor who really cares. If you go to his office hours he will go over anything with you and help! The content itself isn't difficult but you do have to work with a group which is harder than you think. I loved this class because of him!
So here's the thing, Mr. Chilton does not give a care in the world about his students. His tests, group projects and assignments aren't too bad (they're still difficult) but he grades RIDICULOUSLY hard. I tried hard all semester and was cut short from a B by a point. I was there everyday, never missed a class. Definitely not taking him again.
Chilton was cool, but seriously one of the toughest graders ever. DON'T miss class, after two times he takes 20 points off final grade. Had him for Small Group, if you choose the wrong group, you're almost screwed from the get-go. Not a class to slack off in. He is very knowledgeable in his field, but honestly it's difficult to get an A in there.
I loved his class! So much that I also took his 2330. His power points are funny and detailed. you need to put lots of effort in weekly assignments, they end up being worth more than one test! You will need to know the material well and his door is always open if you need help. 3 tests and a final. Super helpful, one of my favorite teachers so far!
Terrible . Do NOT take him. Serisouly. Save yourself and take another teacher. Worst experience ever being in his class. Does not seem to care about students . Extremely hard grader. Save yourself . I repeat DO NOT take him.
Wasted some of my valuable time taking this class, professor has very limited knowledge about subject & to make up for it, talks about his personal life. Exams don't match most of the lectures & you can't miss lectures or you'll lose points from your final grade.
the absolute worst professor at texas state. DO NOT TAKE HIM- talks about his life more than the material/ the hardest grader imaginable/ obsessed with attendance/ does NOT care about you or your grade/ seriously no matter how hard you try on assignments he wont give you above a B/ his powerpoints are extremely annoying and scatter brained as well
I don't understand all the negative reviews. He's probably my favorite professor I've had at TXST! He cares about his students and tries to be as clear as possible about assignments. Anything I was confused about I asked in an email and he always responded. He's sociable and knowledgeable and I definitely recommend him! Don't skip class though!!
I love his lectures. Very interactive, gives lots of examples.
Chilton is a great speaker and communicator. He's very clear with the class schedule/syllabus/deadlines which I like a lot. Would've liked more in-class group discussion and less lecture, given that it was small group comm class. The group assignments were varied and dynamic which was cool. Actually a great experience and I recommend the class.
At first we get put into random groups and that is your group the entire semester, everything you do is with your group including tests, projects, papers. I didn't mind this class but it wasn't my favorite. Tests were straight forward but the other assignments felt like it was his opinion grade. Only 3 tests so that is nice and no speeches.
Chilton is the best! I love him and want to take him again and again! Explains things very well and in depth. If you ever need help he is there and he is very understanding! you don't need to read the book if you attend class and take good notes.
Boring subject, but somewhat engaging. Study and do the papers ahead of time is what I would have done differently. He should teach a Rock n Roll appreciation course next time.
Keep in mind this is a SOPHOMORE level class. This is trying to make Small Group Communication so much more complicated than it has to be. His lectures are enjoyable but he is very meticulous. In lectures he always talks about helping others and being a good team player, but seems to throw it out the window when it comes to projects.
He's not everyone's cup of tea, but if you actually do the work (it's pretty easy) he's really cool. He tries and make the lectures more enjoyable and tells stories and shows videos that are relevant and entertaining
Chilton is cool, the small group class is just not it. Just try to do your part in the projects and everything will work out fine. If you go to his office hours he's really helpful and understanding. Really a nice professor to work with.
Don’t take this class. All he does is ramble on and on about his favorite bands during his online lectures. None of the slides make sense unless you’re writing down pretty much everything he says word for word. every time i thought i understood the content, he proved me wrong. save yourself the stress, worst part of my week.
Personally, I did not benefit from his teaching style. I think his PowerPoints could be a lot more detailed and that this course would have benefited from a full-on FTF class instead of hybrid (which I never say). Not a big fan overall. This is my second semester with him and somehow it was worse than the first.
He does not teach in class at all everything is posted on canvas as videos and they take hours to watch. He loves to assign group projects and not give any clues on how or what you are supposed to do and watches as you scramble to figure it out. Also, he did not tell us the date of our final. Good person but a bad professor, I wouldn't recommend
Casey is a good professor but you need to be on top of the material starting the first week. I was in a hybrid class and would get 10/10 on quizzes if I watched the lecture videos, but if I didn't, it'd be 2-6/10. He can be a hard grader but he does give lots of feedback, just apply yourself and you will get the grade you want. Would take again.
Hes a really sweet guy and his lectures were entertaining. Not necessarily a hard course if you participate and do well in chapter quizzes. He is a pretty tough grader with group projects and any written work though.
This class was not easy and he's a tough grader on projects and assignments. The tests aren't terrible and note-taking is easy. The quizzes are very short and therefore point heavy on the questions.
He's a nice guy, but he makes the class very challenging. The lectures posted are completely different than on the exams, strict mandatory attendance (10 points for every absent after one), not enough assignments for points, so if fail just one exam you're most likely gonna fail, a terrible final project that's just set up for stress and failure.
class was very hard for no reason. class was hybrid and when we met he would just ramble about rock bands. SUPER hard grader you must follow the instructions word for word or you will not do well. each quiz there were lectures filmed that would take hours just to make a decent grade. so many projects. little to no extra credit points nice guy tho..
Chilton is a sweet guy who is clearly passionate about teaching. However, he is definitely one of the hardest graders there is, and his attendance policy is very strict. He also does not do extra credit or accept any late assignments. I had an amazing group this semester and still ended up with a low B in the class.
I've taken two classes with him so the only reason I did well this second time around is because I knew what I was in for. DO NOT take this class if you are not going to go. Attendance is highly mandatory and you'll have no idea what is going on if you don't go. Watching the modules is also necessary to do well on the online quizzes.
His video lectures are very engaging and help clear any confusion with the material discussed in the textbook.
Is Chilton a nice sweet guy? Sure BUT he is the worst professor I have had in my years as a college student. Every question on tests has multiple correct answers confusing you. He cares more about following the book than your actual professional development in the subject. Casey if you're reading this you're a poor excuse for an educator.
Terrible teacher but nice guy
Real sweet guy who clearly has a passion for his work. It was just challenging to have a good grade in this class because he's a tough grader, he does give feedback, but it still doesn't ever feel like you'll be good enough to reach a good grade. I do wish there was more opportunities for extra credit.
This is my second class I have taken with him. I honestly think that I have not learned more in a class than I did this one. If you are willing to do the coursework just like he asks, then you will do well. It took me a minute to get into the swing of things, but as long as you watch his modules you will be fine.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! I was an honor roll student with all A's until I had him, and he flunked me. My wife and kids left me now I'm homeless on the square thanks to him!
Awful teacher! So much harder than it should be and his advice gets you a zero on assignments. How he still has his job is beyond me having him was the worst experience I've ever had and I learned nothing.
BE ADVISED this man does not care about your education. He is one of those employees who only shows up because he has to. This man offers zero explanations towards his decisions. Be aware that he will not work with you.
Chilton is a very sweet professor and CARES about his students. I think these days students don't actually want to do work and put the effort in. This is not a class to use AI nor just show up. I get we all want that degree but he wants you to put the work in to earn your degree. He is a pretty understanding professor as well.
The concepts of this course make sense, however the assignments used make zero sense. Insanely complicated and tedious group assignments that are graded harshly. He uses very old school examples that bore the students and the online modules take hours to complete and the quizzes are proctored using proctario.
Seems very dedicated to his job but for students. bad teacher. such a harsh grader and doesn't provide feedback on why I received the grade I did. test seemed to try to trick us because the questions are targeted for a person who is as knowledgeable as him, not students learning for the first time!!!! hard grader, not flexible attendance.
IF YOU WANT TO KYS GO AHEAD AND TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WORST PROFESSOR IVE EVER HAD IMPOSSIBLE TO PASS, INSUFFERABLE, SEEMS LIKE A NICE GUY BUT DOES NOTHINGGGGGGGGG TO HELP YOU, NO EXTRA CREDIT, NO LATE WORK, NOTHING. TELLS US IN THE LAST WEEK THAT OUR GRADES ARE INNACURATE SO WERE ALL FAILING. NEVER HATED SOMEONE MORE IN MY LIFE
IF YOU WANNA KYS TAKE THIS CLASS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Worst professor of all time.
I have now had this professor twice. Small group is fine (as long as you have a good group & leader). Empirical Research… don't get me started. He is willing to meet in office hours but the lectures are very boring. The exams… studying does nothing for you.
I've never rated any teacher here. I usually just read but I had to for this teacher. He was awful. If you aren't going to put all of your time in this class. You're going to fail. He's a very tuff grader. And his attendance system is not very good either. I would definitely NOT recommend this class to anyone.
I never wore my seatbelt while driving to school, because I wanted to die before making it to his class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO LEARN SOMETHING. He doesn't offer any extra credit. He doesn't teach. He posts videos on canvas so if that's your thing then he might be the professor for you but this was a hybrid class. Which he should lecture the days we meet and group work outside. I digress. He's a really tough grader. Beware!
this man is borderline impossible to please. for someone who has the most detailed rubrics in the world, even if you check every box he asks for, you will probably get a 70 if you're lucky. the only upside is you will most likely love your group members since he basically trauma bonds you all. i beg of you, if you like your gpa: beware of this man!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! I took this class twice, first time got a d and the second time as a deans list student and got a c. He gives little to no valuable information it's attendance mandatory and graded. Tests are HARD and you have to know EVERYTHING to get a b. He failed my friend for missing to go to her grandpas funeral with proof and notice!
IMPOSSIBLE to complete anything to his satisfaction. If you miss more than one class you are docked an entire letter grade. I have taken classes where the material is extremely challenging, and this class is even more difficult for absolutely no reason, solely due to his grading and lack of feedback. DO NOT TAKE IF U VALUE UR PEACE AND SANITY.
are you a dean's list honors student? you won't be anymore! DO NOT TAKE
Did not like his teaching style. In person he was very nice but through emails and announcements he was very passive aggressive. He didn't give clear instructions on major assignments. He had half of the class re-do projects from the beginning
This is one of those professors that thinks what they are teaching is akin to the gospel. Spoiler, it's not and just a semester long massive headache for not only you but your group. Everything taught is no joke simple common sense, and yet he has a 6 page final. Like who is hiring these people man.
This course was not as difficult as it seemed, given that it was hybrid. He is a good professor who knows the material. Watch the lectures, take notes, attend class, and work in your group. Tests can be challenging, but that is what studying is for. Put in the work and you will be fine.
0/5 — If u want to ruin your GPA and your life take this course.
He seems like a really chill professor when you meet him in person. But don't let that deceive you, his grading style will make your GPA go all the way down. He grades like as if you just committed a crime and will nitpick everything you do. If you are reading this I advise you to pick any other professor except for him. One mistake will ruin you.
