DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! I have literally cried over this class way more than it is worth. Finnerty is a horrible professor. He is not specific in what he wants, and his tests are beyond difficult. If you are a pre-nursing student and value your GPA, DO NOT TAKE FINNERTY!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! Finnerty is the worst teacher I've had in 4 years at WSU. His tests are the most ridiculously hard tests ever that have almost no correlation to what is taught in lecture. He treats it like everyone is in their masters for Micro and does not specify what he expects. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR!!!! Do not take him... He talks to you as if you are in graduate school and should know the material better than he does. His tests are ridiculously hard... I had no choice but to take this class and have dropped all but 1 of my classes in order to have enough time for this class and I'm STILL getting a C. Absolutly ridiculous.
He really wasn't that bad. If you read ahead of time YOU'LL BE FINE! You take quizzes (which are helpful for exam) and the exams got better after the first one (we were the guinea pigs so of course they were hard!) and was pretty lenient towards the end! (added curves) and he even dropped a test score! Wasn't the best class, but was doable.
This was a very fair class. Yes, it was difficult, and the tests were hard, the first one anyway. But over all he was a funny guy and was really helpful when needed. If you read the book and acutally study a week before the tests then you will be fine and end with an A. It wasnt so bad :)
Where to start? If you didn't go this office you seemed to be on his bad list. His lectures all had to with why his class was so important and how everyone should go to his office. He would than ask a few questions following w/ high fives and to the person that answer it. If you were lucky he would than lecture the last 10 mins w/ info not on exam.
Nothing from his lecture was on the exams. Everything was from the book. Class averages on exams were D's.. What does that show about his teaching ability?
He expects you to come in knowing what microbiology is. He is not good at clarifying things. His lectures are all power-point based. He basically just reads off what he has on the power-point. He is a very confusing professor. He doesn't reply quick to emails unless you go in to his office during his office times. Don't take him!
Do not take him. If you need this class, take it at a different school. He does not try to help you at all. Our class average for a test was a 58% and then he "allowed" us to retake the test. It sounds nice but everyone did worse on the make up one. OHH and we had to take the make up test along with our third test of the year. DON'T DO IT
Teaches this as a 400 level class. That is all.
I enjoyed his lectures, but when it came time for the exam- no matter how many endless hours of study I put in, and how much I thought I understood - most of the questions were on things that weren't highlighted in lecture or even in the book. I ended up with a C, my first C ever. And a C is the highest grade I heard of in this class.
If you love environmental biology, you will love this class with Finnerty. Promise.
Omg! This class is a disaster! Tons tons of hard works has to be turned in in every single class. He's NOT HELPFUL at all, No Clarification, even if you go see him in his office outside of class. Sometimes, it looks like he is just following the lecture professor. He doesn't care about students and doesn't know how to teach! Try to avoid him!
DON'T EVER EVER EVER TAKE HIM! Seriously, Don't Take Him!!!! He is the WORST!
Finnerty is a great guy, I'd sit down and have a beer with him any day, but he is a space-case of a teacher. Very unorganized and isn't timely posting grade updates. All of class is through D2L including tests. Attendance and reading the book chapters are very important. He's great as a guy like I said and very passionate about medicine. I got a B
The is extremely difficult, and requires a lot of time and studying for a 3 credit class. Finnerty is very passionate about Micro, but his teaching style was very last minute, unorganized, and difficult. The exams were very tough and based off the book more so than the lectures.
I don't really who this guy personally but I know is he's a terrible professor. No D2L updates. He takes forever to grade the and return the works to see what you can improve. Ex. we have works due every single week but he gave us our work back at like week 7 and he keeps saying we don't improve. He's actually useless when u really need big help.
I had Dr. Finnerty as my labrotory instructor for upper level Microbiology. I've had a very respectable and straight forward interaction with him through out the semester. To succeed, you do have to bring your A game, but otherwise the way he taught everything was very straightforward and concise. Demonstrates lab techniques VERY well!
Nursing majors: be prepared for a difficult, stressful semester with this professor. He is very knowledgeable on the subject of microbiology, but is not able to "dumb it down". Reading the chapters are essential for passing this class. This professor does not respond to emails and is barely available for office hours. Take at another school!
Dr. Finnerty is not an easy professor. I had him for Microbiology and hated every minute of it. His tests are extremely detailed and have questions on things never covered in lecture. He NEVER responds to emails and is difficult to find during the day. Worst professor I've ever had, but Dr. Weber isn't any better. Take micro at a different school!
Do not take! Typically a 4.0 student and this was the hardest class I've ever taken in my life. He expects you to memorize every single thing, and picks extremely small details from the book and tests you on them. He doesn't reply to emails, and isn't accessible outside of class. At all costs, do not take with him! Take at a different school.
You need to read the book for this class. Don't just read the chapter once, read it over and over again. It's a pain, but it's the only way to do well. This is a difficult class, no doubt, but it is doable. You truly just know how to study efficiently to maximize the amount of information you can memorize.
Dr. Finnerty is an anomaly. He is incredibly nice and has some pretty great jokes. He's more than willing to help you individually and takes the time to get to know you if you give him the chance. But he teaches this class as a level 400 class rather than a 200 class. If you have to take this class, MEMORIZE the book and come to ALL lectures.
Finnerty was helpful in lab at giving feedback. His lectures are hard to stay focused on what he is talking about. 5 tests thru the semester (no cumulative final), when you take the last exam during finals you have option of retaking one. Tests are very focused on small details from the book. Have fun reading! Also not very good at posting grades.
This class requires a lot of time outside of class studying independently. For all five exams, he didn't finish teaching the material that was on the test. In order to pass the exams you have to carefully read and understand all the material in the books, so prepare to read and re-read. He wasn't very organized and the exams are difficult.
Finnerty teaches this class like a 400-level. In order to be successful you must read the chapters (two or three times) and memorize small details. The lab wasn't bad and helps your grade by adding buffer points.
(I took 409 with him) He's passionate about the subject and loves when people interact and participate in class. Read the book and use the slides given as an aid, don't rely only on them. It's not easy, but if you put in the time and talk to him about it you'll learn a lot.
Pretty awful all his tests are random factoids in the book good luck
This teacher is not very good at helping out when you are struggling. The tests have random facts in them and you won't do well if you do not read the book word for word. Think you have time to prepare for his quizzes? FORGET IT! He only gives you a day to read and understand a chapter before the quiz. I do not reccommend taking this class with him
Honestly, I really expected more from Prof Finnerty this semester, especially being online. He never replies to emails (like ever; my emails from before class began this SUMMER have no reply), is an apathetic grader, + exam q's are extremely specific ideas from the book. Felt like a 500-level class with a 100-level prof. Funny guy but avoid him.
I was not impressed by Finnerty's approach to online cell bio lab. Maybe he is better in person. For a 1 credit lab, he really makes you work hard. He did not grade a SINGLE assignment until the week grades were due to eServices - which really pissed me off. He expects a lot and gives you nothing back. I would not recommend.
A good guy, but doesnt lecture even though attendance is mandatory. Tests are directly from the book and are very difficult.
Finnerty definitely knows what he's talking about. He does give out harder tests but as long as you go to class you will do fine. He is always willing to meet and help you better understand things. I took cell bio and virology with him and did well in both.
I feel bad saying this because Dr. Finnerty can be a nice guy. But he is very intimidating and not a good professor. His classes are impossible and if you don't know every piece of information in the book you will not do well. If you have the option to take this class with a different professor I would suggest doing that.
Dr. Finnerty is the best professor I've had at Winona State. He has high expectations and his classes can be a lot of work, but he has a clear and organized way of teaching. There are tons of opportunities to improve your grade in his class through bonus points and retakes. Very caring and understanding professor, especially during the pandemic.
Does not grade anything quickly. The exams are so much more in depth than what you learn in lecture. Expects you to memorize the whole textbook. Tells you to watch lecture videos that he doesn't post.
DOES NOT RESPOND! He is willing to make an appointment with you, but emailing him is useless and teams messaging him leads to either no response (but you can see he read it) or a response saying "I'll let you know tomorrow." Sorry to say, but tomorrow will never come.
I would not recommend Finnerty to anyone who is trying to seriously learn content. You HAVE to read textbook chapters almost every other night and do discussions on them... but in class, he can't catch up to the chapter we're on. Overall a very nice guy, but very unfocused. Attendance is mandatory just to sit and listen to him get off topic.
You can never get ahold of him outside of class. He doesn't grade anything all semester, I'm guessing he will right before the grades are due. Very knowledgeable about biology but wow, he doesn't know how to lecture it. Reading the textbook is mandatory bc you write discussions for grades on every single one. Always super off topic in lecture.
Absolutely awful professor. Without a doubt the most unorganized professor I have ever had. Post homework on saturday night due monday morning. Does not use outlook for emails and will only respond on Microsoft Teams. Considered a generall 100 level class an "upper level class." For an 8 am class, if canceled, he wouldn't let us know until 7:30 am
Class was very easy if you showed up to lecture and did your lab work, however he never lectured about the material. It was nothing but Covid-19 lectures, even though the class material did not consist of the Covid-19 virus or pandemic. He also is very lazy when it comes to emails. He has still not even opened 3 of my emails that I have sent him .
He didnt respond to a single email this entire semester. He also failed to give us extra credit points that we worked for. And finaly he gave us very unclear directions on what the final would be like, and then never showed up or reached out to us about it. so the final as of now has not happened.
If you want an A in this class be prepared to do an in depth reading of every single page in the textbook. I can honestly say this class was harder than OChem.
He was my lab professor and he would not answer emails. Nothing was ever prepped for lab and quite frankly he had 0 idea what he was doing. May be a nice guy but he is the worst professor I have ever had.
Dr. Finnerty is one of the worst professors I have had at WSU. He talks way too much about things that have nothing to do with the lab. Wastes a lot of time at the beginning of lab, resulting is getting out late. Difficult to get ahold of outside of class and he grades ridiculously hard, especially for an intro level class. Avoid him at all costs.
Does not respond to emails or Teams, weirdly rude to select students, and entirely unhelpful. Clearly very knowledgeable but an awful teacher.
Online class so it was pretty easy but when you did have questions... never replied. Sent him an email the second week of class asking for clarification... still waiting for a response.
Spends the first hour of class just talking about nonsense so we don't have time to finish labs. Tough grader and will not help you. Complains about students asking questions or for help. Everything has to be done on his time and you will sit there waiting for him to get you stuff that you should of had before class.
I had Finnerty for lab in 241. Lab was easy if you just follow the procedure you print out before class. He usually talks about it for the first hour or so and you can listen for little hints but also doesn't matter. He grades lab assignments pretty loosely as long as you do them. He is lazy though and not very helpful during lab unless ask him.
I took Finnerty for ANIMAL CELL CULTURE LAB. He told us from day 1 that this is his favorite class and we would probably all get an A. That being said he talked for about an hour every lab about his personal life and history that didn't pertain to lab. There were little to no grading criteria or instructions. I would be scared to take him again.
Dr finnerty talks all class long about random stuff not applicable to the lab. Also is very confusing
One of the worst professors at WSU. Talks for at least an hour at the beginning of the lab, giving unnecessary details. Always get out late because of this. He's a tough grader and will be weeks behind in grading so you never know what your actual grade is. Very passionate and enthusiastic about what he's teaching but not good at teaching it.
Gets off-topic every class period which results in him being behind in the chapters. You have to read 2-3 chapters a week and write a discussion then he lectures in class on them. You have to keep up with the discussion due dates even if he's behind in lecturing on them. Never up to date on grading which makes it hard to know what your grade is
Dr. Finnerty isnt very good at communication. if you want to talk to him use teams. We have 5 units. units are only about 3 hours each. No matter how much I study I always get a 83-87% range score on the tests. all memorization. Grade was 15% homework, 25% unit tests 60% final, and 5% extra credit. ~17 hrs of work. I got 79.61% but he rounded to 80
This class was pretty easy as long as you stay up to date with all the terms you should easily get an A. There is 5 chapters. For each chapter there is a quiz at the end, which is worth 40% of your grade. 15% for the Smartbook quizzes and 25% for the review quizzes, and then a comprehensive final at the end worth 60% of your grade.
If you can avoid taking any class with Dr. Finnerty, do it. He only lectures about the easiest topics from the chapters while you have to read the textbook to get the rest of the content. All of his questions from his exams are from the Essential Cell Biology Test Bank questions, which are incredibly difficult and can be found on quizlets.
He takes a long time to grade assignments and gives way too much work for outside of class. Reading chapters over the weekend (25-40 pages) to be ready for lecture on monday. One assignment/assessment per class day. lecture is mandatory and will get scolded if you miss more than 3 classes. Do not take if you have a heavy class load!
I needed more teaching from lecture, not pre-constructed PowerPoints that only explained diagrams. Penalizes first tries when we are learning, aka takes points off for multiple attempts. Gets offended at any sort of feedback. Expects you to know organic chemistry. Did not receive feedback for our final paper (30% of grade), class closed on D2L.
He will never respond to you, worst I have had at WSU. McGraw Hill connect online is all that is used and final exam is worth 60% of the grade is not like the quizzes all semester. I asked for help, he never responded before or after exam. I had zero support in this class, a professor isn't even needed the way this is taught. Very disappointing WSU
I do like the way Dr. Finnerty lectures and is open to questions in class, but 90% of this class is self taught. He assigns one chapter per week to read and take notes on, along with 2 quizzes (one due Monday night, one due Friday). The material in this class is extremely hard to teach yourself, he expects 6-8 hours/week of studying on this class.
Professor Finnerty is not a good professor to have for any sort of lab class. Be prepared to 100% teach yourself as he sits up front the whole class and essentially gives you a study period but expects you to understand the human anatomy inside and out fully on your own. The lack of understanding falls on him and his refusal to teach.
Well, he is a very nice guy, but he does nothing. As a lab professor, he just sits there and sometimes shows us anatomy on the cadavers. He is very knowledgeable, but he doesn't like to share that knowledge very often. I think he means well, but it's really a teach-yourself-everything kind of class.
95% self taught material. He expects you to know all the material before class (80 pages a week or even more) as his lecture gloss over what the material is rather than teaching it. He doesn't respond to email and only communicate through teams and doesn't even respond to that. Very ditzy, forgetting to post/grade stuff. Disappointing for sure.
Final exam worth 60% :'( And it's pretty tough, got an 87% on it but studied literally everything. Somewhat hard class to earn an A because of weird and difficult quiz/exam questions, expect a B. About 10-15hrs of coursework over semester so lightwork but overall doesn't feel like I learned much. Don't take this class if you don't have to :(
The class is only 1 credit and only a 100 level course, yet this professor decided to make a cumulative final exam with 100 questions and also make that 60% of your entire grade. Not to mention, he claims to be available but hasn't answered a single email i've sent all semester. DO NOT TAKE if you do not have to.
I would say this course is somewhat of an easy A if you study a lot and fully understand the material. The final being 60% is a bit scary, so ensure you are constantly reviewing because while it could be straightforward forward, it still is challenging. Communication-wise was pretty bad. I don't recommend.
Guys, don't do it to yourself. I had to drop this class because it was so bad. His tests were so hard, and there was so much reading/homework. His communication was horrible. I tried multiple times to contact him, and even in person, I never got straight answers. So if you have to take this class, try to get another professor or prepare lots.
He states that you should spend at least 9-12 hours outside of class every week studying and its not optional. You're expected to read and memorize a large chapter every week plus required lectures in which material is not explained but he only reviews the diagrams from the text. 2 quizzes/week, 5 tests & a large paper with no help or explanation.
Inaccessible outside of class, does not meet students in person. Lectures mandatory but pointless. Must spend 9+ hours every week memorizing the textbook in order to barely pass the tests, which is the only grade in the book. A huge paper that is not explained, and he will not help/explain anything until a week before the draft is due. DO NOT TAKE!
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM!! He hasn't put anything in the grade book all semester, and you have to read so much. He doesn't really teach in class because he gets off topic but he takes attendance so you have to be there.
Very difficult class, extremely time consuming. Tests are very convoluted, and no matter how much studying you do they seem nearly impossible. Lectures are pointless but attendance is mandatory. Also need to write a lengthy paper for this course, but the requirements for it keep changing as the semester goes on. Would not recommend.
literally just had this guy for orientation and he was awful. he's a really sweet professor, and you can tell he wants you to succeed, but he is so behind boring and he is impossible to reach outside of class. his lectures were the bane of my existence- do yourself a favor and don't take this professor.
All but inaccessible outside of class. You basically have to teach yourself the material, 1 lengthy chapter per week as he treats lectures as "review sessions" Assigns a paper worth 30% of the grade but doesn't help and continually changes expectations and due dates throughout the semester Do not take Finnerty if you have ANY other option
Every assignment and quiz was through McGraw Hill, except for the final. She had the final date in D2L wrong and did not email us about the final until 5 days prior. She takes a long time to respond to messages through Microsoft Teams (her preferred form of communication).
its next to impossible to get an A in this class. you need 100% or you will have a B
This class should be more than 1 credit. Not a lot of homework, but a ton of memorization. The final is worth 60% of the grade so you have to do good to get an A in the class. Doesn't take up much time during the semester, but you have to study for the final
Dr. Finnerty is a great human being but a terrible professor. He expects students to give 100% but he can't even respond to his emails. He literally has done no grading throughout out the course. I would recommend avoiding him if at all possible, I can't image what he's like for an actually class.
It was only orientation class and we had to meet every week and we had an assignment almost every week that he never graded.
Transfer before taking Finnerty. His lectures are useless and go weeks ahead of exams. Requires full knowledge of 1 dense chapter per week, exams go beyond the textbook, 5 exams and a final paper with 0 guidance. He takes months to grade, is inaccessible and won't respond outside of class. Not showing up would help you, but attendance is required.
Does not respond, does not grade on time, does not realize that his cell bio class is supposed to be an introduction level cell bio. This 300 level class was harder than any 400 level class i have taken. Would not have taken it with him if any other professors were teaching cell bio. His reputation is deserved.
just learn the material.
DO NOT take this professor if you can help it. Dr. Finnerty is impossible to reach outside of class, he doesn't respond to emails, and he doesn't grade anything on time. It is the end of the semester, and he still hasn't entered grades from August. He expects you to know everything before lecture, and exams are HARD. Choose happiness and STAY AWAY.
This class is not easy. It is expected that you remember all the biology knowledge and participate. Randomly calling on you is to be expected. Test heavy, and they are very difficult. Not able to be reached by email and grading takes a long long time.
Dr. Finnerty is a caring professor who cares about the success of his students. Be aware that all the work for this class is online on your own time: reading, quizzes, exams, etc.
