Dr. Self is an amazing instructor and hella funny! She is a matter of fact kind of lecturer and I loved her attitude. She's so knowledgable and her lectures are very clear. She may be tough but you will learn the stuff. Take her class!!!!

Casey was an amazing professor, she taught with another professor & the days that Casey lectured were my favorite. She is straight forward and to the point and pretty funny! You have to attend lecture for Poll Questions (participation points) but she makes heavy lectures seem simple and easily understandable. Definitely one of my favorite proffs!

She is a fast lecturer and kinda intimidating to ask q's to in lecture, so I recommend going to her office hours because she is very helpful and will walk you through tougher concepts. I went to most of the review sessions and studied with friends (mostly off her lectures though we were told to read the textbook) and I did well! You can do it!

Dr. Self is great! She is really good at explaining concepts and it is very important to her that you understand. She uses many different techniques to keep you engaged like PollEverywhere questions, Random Call, and small group discussions. Also she is a hoot! Really sarcastic but so funny!

She's a great professor and makes learning fun. However, that said, the class structure isn't the greatest and neither are the exams. You have to learn a lot of material as you don't know what you'll exactly be tested on and I'm talking about dense material. Class consists of 5 exams and poll questions everyday so participation matters.

Casey is able to explain the information well and has an AWESOME sense of humor. There's a lot of engagement during lecture- she gives time to discuss and you get points for PollEverywhere questions (beware of the random call list). I had to re-watch lectures b/c she talks pretty fast but I strongly recommend taking her if you need this class.

Dr. Self is incredibly intelligent and capable. She is on top of addressing questions and thoroughly explaining concepts.

Casey is one of the best Bio professor that I had here at UW! Her public speaking is really amazing! The class is hard! U have to understand the concepts from lectures rather than memorizing. Her exams are all multiple choices and Poll everywhere participation. I would love to take classes with her again! Recommend if you want a challenging class

Even though the class had over 300 students, Professor Self did her best to engage with each and every individual. She genuinely cared about student's learning and held optional weekly study sessions for student's benefit. Tests were hard, but as long as you study you can pass easily.

Tough class but not impossible! I studied a medium amount and still got a 3.1. I suggest typing notes because lectures are packed with info that aren't on her slides and she talks fast. Lab is super cool, you see a lot of specimens and get to dissect sharks, and rabbits/minks. There's three lecture exams, two lab practicals and weekly lab quizzes.

I love Dr. Self. The materials are difficult, but she holds study session with peer facilitators like four times a week and official hour. She will attend every study session and answer questions. Her lecture is amazing, clear logic, helpful and interesting. She is very enthusiastic about what she is teaching and very encouraging. Love her so much.

I enjoyed class with Professor Self, the content is difficult but she makes her lectures interesting. It's difficult and the class isn't curved, so you have to study for the exams, but she attends all the study sessions, and is really helpful in answering questions. The textbook is helpful if you don't have background knowledge of health sciences.

Dr. Self runs a hard class but she runs it very well. I took this class as an elective expecting it to be easier, which it definitely was not, but ended up really liking it because of her teaching style and clear passion for the material. I would definitely recommend Dr. Self to anyone willing to work hard but be rewarded for it.

Yeah she talks really fast but the curriculum has a lot of content and the lectures are only 50 minutes. If you are really worried, the study sessions are excellent and she goes to all of them. She is really good at explaining things if you ask. The class is panaptoed which is really helpful for notes because you wont catch everything in lecture!

Casey is an pretty cool professor, her class is based on active learning. She really tries to make you learn and conceptually understand the concepts so you can apply them to real life. She is super funny.

one of the best prof's I've taken so far at UW!!! she genuinely cares about her students. she's very knowledable yet presents the material in a simple way. exams are based on material discussed in lecture and practice exams are very helpful. PS she's super cool and funny!!! if you work hard, you feel rewarded in this class :)

Dr. Self is an outstanding professor! She is truly passionate about her work and cares about her students. She encourages a high level of active learning, but I actually found it to be very helpful. The practice exams she posts to Canvas are extremely helpful and she provides the class with all the tools to succeed. She's absolutely hilarious too!!

SUCH AN EXCELLENT TEACHER! Her tests focusing on lectures, so if you could understand every point she made during lecture, you will nailed the tests. Definitely ask questions you don't understand through piazza, office hour or study sessions. Happy studying!

Hands down the best class I've taken at UW. Learned a whole lot of info that she made applicable to real life, and takes the time to make sure that you understand. She uses a lot of active learning so I'd recommend taking this class with a friend (or making a new one). Just a really rewarding class all around.

Dr. Self is an amazing lecturer and really cares about her students. Tests are hard but if you attend lecture and put in extra studying outside of class you can do well. Best teacher that I've had at UW so far.

Dr. Self is blunt, funny, and gets the job done. I wouldnt recommend this class as a freshman first going into UW because you NEED to study outside of class, and this class will force you to develop new/better study habits. Exams are difficult but you can do it if you put the WORK in. Self can be intimidating, but she cares about your learning.

Dr. Self is a fantastic lecturer!! She really knows how to present topics in a way thats best for the students. This class is pretty fast-paced, so its easy to fall behind if you dont stay attentive. My tip is to keep up with the Questions to Answer that come with every lecture slide, and form a study group. One of my favorite classes at UW!!

Absolutely amazing. The material isn't crazy hard, but it is so dense. She's great at explaining it though. You do have to put in WORK, but it's interesting and applicable to life that it's worth it. She can be blunt, but it's mostly funny. Super knowledgable and super accessible. Didn't do the hottest on tests, but I'd 118% take it again with HER.

She's a classic UW bio professor. Forces you to come to class and participate. Definitely a nice lady but will shamelessly call you out if you aren't paying attention even in a 300 person lecture. If you have a bio background, class is stupid easy, if you don't, just pay attention to her lectures, she's VERY thorough.

She was always enthusiastic about content. Four exams and the lowest was dropped, but final exam was mandatory. No surprises exam wise, they were all very similar to past exams, and it's all multiple choice. Polleverywhere for participation but there were many other opportunities to makeup these polling points. Great class, would highly recommend.

Self is top notch. Intelligent, blunt, funny, captivating and sensible. Material is interesting, and not too difficult to grasp, but dense. You need to attend lecture, read the textbook, and study a lot outside of class to get a good grade, but it's doable. No homework. Just participation points and 5 exams. Exams are only multiple choice.

This class was awesome! I was nervous/excited to learn Bio but Prof. Self did a great job explaining the material in great detail. She provides many study sessions and practice exams, and you can ask many questions online. This class will perk your interest in how the body functions and fill you with knowledge to understand it's systems.

4 midterms (lowest dropped, 50 q's in 50 min) & 1 final. Most attendance graded, but there's room to skip. There's a LOT of content in a short amount of time, so keep up with readings and study guides. Sarcastic funny sense of humor, and talks fast in lecture so having laptops help. Old exams online are really helpful, study lots outside of class.

She was a really great professor. Her expectations were clear and you could tell she really valued whether or not you learn the material. She was nice to talk to and was super open to questions. Kind of intimidating but really nice when you start talking to her.

Fantastic teacher and incredibly knowledgable when it comes to anatomy. She will give you every opportunity to learn and understand the material, but it's on you to come prepared to class, lab, and office hours. If you put in the time and study efficiently you will do well. Find what study habits work for you and don't be afraid to ask questions

Even though my grade in this class was not the best, that is no fault of Professor Self. She is knowledgable, always there to help students, and really likes what she teaches. It is hard material, so be prepared to work hard and still maybe not get the best grade. She also seems pretty intimidating, but is actually super nice, fair, and clear.

LOVE LOVE HER! She is very passionate about this subject. NGL the class is hard, you're going to have to work for your grade, but her lectures are engaging, her tests are reasonable, and she provides you with a lot of tools. She does random calling, but you learn to love it. She lets you drop the lowest test grade except for the final.

You're asked to talk to the people next to you in class very frequently and there are a lot of poll everywhere questions everyday, but you can get participation through going to optional study sessions. I never went to them but they post the worksheets on piazza

This class moves fast and a lot of information is covered every day. She does a great job of providing her own office hours, and builds study sessions with TAs for extra help. She gives you all the resources you need to succeed. You just need use them. She's so smart and funny & I probably would've hated this class with any other professor!

I cannot express how much I love professor Self. She is really inspiring and wants to see everyone succeed. If you're struggling like I was initially I strongly suggest going to her office hours! She completely turned my grade around and was very kind about it. She is by far the best lecturer (and one of the most difficult) I've had at UW take her!

I took bio118 as an online class. Self keeps async lectures pretty short but says a LOT of information in a very short period of time, so be sure to pause and rewind to catch everything, but her sarcastic humor makes lecture interesting. Don't let yourself fall behind, you have to dedicate a lot of time for studying to get a decent grade.

Dr. Self is an amazing lecturer! Out of all classes that I have taken, she's the best lecturer I know. All the materials are super clear and it requires you to think critically. She presents biology in a very interesting way and link it to our daily life. It's a must take class at UW!

Dr. Self is truly amazing. I didn´t do so good on my first exam and I went to her office hours and talk about it. She gives good advice and helps you improve. She makes you work hard but it´s worth it! her exams are all graph questions because she didn´t want her students to google. She drops your lowest exam score. no extra credit no curve.

Dr. Self is an amazing lecturer. Biology is tough, and she was able to make it more bearable. Online exams were heavy on reading on graphs and exercises our thinking.

Dr. Self speaks very quickly and flies through material but is kinda open to feedback and receptive to concerns if you seek her out. I think a lot of the criticism she receives isn't because of her own choices but departmental choices--like the amount of content covered. I truly think she is a good person that just needs to slow down a bit.

Lots of quizzes, and very content heavy. However, she has been pretty accomodating. She adjusted the grade scaling to benefit all of us-due to our lower than avg scores. She also has a panopto option this quarter. This class is difficult, but she does try her best to give study strategies. Rewatching lectures is necessary at times.

You have to work to get a good grade in this class. That's why all these people are complaining. Dr. Self does speak fast but that's because there's a lot of content to cover. I think she's really knowledgable and nice actually. There are a ton of opportunities to ask questions at office hours and study sessions. I'd take it again.

Ppl complain bc they dont put in the work typical for a 5 credit class. Class is lecture heavy bc its content heavy. Exams r directly pulled from study guide questions she gives you and ppl just complain bc they dont study and expect bio to magically absorb into the brain. Clear lecturer and puts in work into her classes. Best prof Ive had.

The class is difficult, but if you actually put the effort in and keep trying, it's nothing you can't work with. Professor Self was super fun in our class, and you can tell she loved what she was teaching. Lectures did go by fast, but she slowed down if needed and was always willing to take and answer our questions.

I loved Dr. Self. She expects her students to work hard, and gives many more resources than she needs to to help students succeed. The people who said otherwise are bitter about having to put in more work than they are used to/evaluate their study habits. One exam drop and she even adjusted her grade scale. Put in the work and you'll be fine.

By far the best class I've taken at UW. She can go pretty fast for lectures, but just raise your hand and politely ask her to go slower or repeat a slide and she will! She wants you to learn and her efforts definitely show. Go to the three weekly study sessions, do the study guides, and use Piazza- best resources ever. 2h/day study and you'll 4.0.

Dense but well organized class with a very knowledgeable teaching group. This class provides a very unique experience and is super cool but also comes with lots of material to memorize/read. This class really pushes you as a learner and student. If you are looking for a class that is more chill and not super stressful this might not be worth it.

She explained everything pretty well and even included time for practice exams and partner discussions to enhance your learning. I like how she's not your typical prof, she actually cares about your progress through the course and even hands out tips on how to enhance your learning. attend every lecture and read the txt book. Dr. Self is incredibly knowledgable in terms of physiological systems and did an amazing job of answering spur of the moment questions that arose in lecture. Her enthusiasm made the class a lot more engaging. Her lectures are fast paced, so I recommend reading the textbook material before class. Read the textbook and you will be golden!

Self is really knowledgeable, funny, and caring. The class is hard, there is a lot of information to remember, but Self made the class enjoyable.

Honestly the people who are giving her bad ratings probably weren't paying attention to/attending lectures. She encourages students to work together and participate every lecture. As someone who typically has trouble remaining focused during lectures, her energy and belief in her students capabilities really helped me stay focused and motivated.

At first, she was not my favorite, but I grew to love her. She is very blunt but cares a lot about her students and their quality of learning. Attend her facilitated study groups, these are what set her aside from any other professor I have had (they are incredibly helpful). I did not open the book once, I just rewatched lectures.

This class is a LOT. I personally really struggled with the format of this class; it's a lot of self teaching. It took up majority of my time..balancing with work on the weekends when majority of this work should be done on the weekend sucked. I felt like I didn't know what to know but you needed to know EVERYTHING. No study guide; test heavy!!!

Hardest class I've ever had. Memorization until my brain spilled out of my ears. The workload was bearable because Dr. Self is a cool person and because the wet lab experiences were so interesting. Fantastic for people looking to learn some anatomy and study habits before profession schools. I wouldn't advise taking this alongside hard courses.

Best class I have taken at UW and my new favorite professor. 310 is innately the most interesting, rewarding, and challenging biology class at UW and Self makes it 10x better. She cares so much about her students, is hilarious, and understands the stress we all feel as STEM majors. This is by far the hardest class I have taken, but so so worth it!!

she's a great and funny professor, and makes the lectures fun. but there are tests every 2 weeks, are not cumulative but they build on top of eachother, exams are worth 80% of your grade and the other 20% is attendance. As long as you practice active learning, review lectures/ draw the diagrams and watching youtube videos, you'll be fine.

Dr Self is a good teacher, everything on the tests is from the lecture. So memorize your notes, use flashcards. It is difficult, but it requires time to memorize key facts, especially definitions. The practice tests were very helpful, some questions from them were on the tests. Sometimes it would be the exact question or just worded differently.

AMAZING professor, best I have ever had!! Dr. Self truly is super engaging during lectures and funny. It is a lot of content to keep up with but attend the PF study sessions and you will be fine!

Dr Self is a great lecturer who obviously cares a lot about biology. I learned so much from her and wish I could have taken another class with her but she's so popular that it was already filled! There is a lot of work you have to do on your own but Dr Self makes it very clear what to do and where to find it.
