This guy is really easy. There are 2 MC midterms and a MC final with some short ID. Almost all of the concepts are REALLY easy to understand but I do have to warn you that this class can be VERY boring. There isn't much reading involved but we do not really talk about the most interesting stuff - we watch like 1 movie a week though so that's good!
Such a boring lecturer..you normally don't have to go to class because he has slides online, but i recommend going to class on the days that he shows videos. Go over the slides a lot before tests, and you'll be fine.
He is a good professor and all but the class is just straight boring. Do not take this class unless you must, it sucks. Although I heard sociology is worse...
The class is super easy. Not a lot of reading. Take this class if your other classes have a lot of work, it's a nice break. His tests are straight forward and the material is easy. Show up for movies and movie sheets though, no makeup. He's not a great lecturer but there are worse.
Great professor, looked forward to going to class most days, sometimes would be boring, easy, made anthro pretty interesting for me, might consider taking another class in the subject because of him.
This Professor is unhelpful, and puts on tests that are very hard and test you on tiny details that are pointless to the subject of anthropology. I would not recommend taking this class at all
Tests have obscure details and are worded poorly. The lectures are always boring.
His tests are an absolute joke. He gives like 30 to 40 question mid terms and has very tough questions for such a tiny amount given. Yes alot of students were in the C range which is average but with such a low number of questions one more wrong on that test for many would have dropped probably a good 10 percent of the class into the D range.
Tests are really easy and lectures are sometimes boring, but not that bad. good class.
He mumbles and goes on various tangents in his lectures. Powerpoint slides are unclear and minimalistic in detail. The problem is that the tests are based on the trivial details in his tangents. Seems like he doesn't care about the class. Short tests, so a few wrong answers mean full letter grades.
easy class and easy tests but SO BORING! you actually have to listen to the lectures because the power points do not make any sense without listening. tests are short and really easy if you study but sometimes random specific questions are on there that no one knows. pretty easy class but not fun at all
such a weird grading scale that can really hurt overall grade
Professor Walsh himself is great! He's always avaliable, very approachable, and he KNOWS HIS MATERIAL and applies his actual fieldwork to your studies (just in case anthro majors wanted to know!). He tends to go on tangents sometimes, but it's definitely understandable. Easy class, wonderful teacher! Take his class!!!!!
This professor is very unhelpful. He has boring lectures and his tests are only 30 multiple choice on over four chapters and a book. They do not test what you learn by any means and many questions are ambiguous. I would urge you not to take this class!
awful, so boring
Relaxed chill teacher. Read the book and pay the slightest bit of attention in lecture and you'll do fine.
BOOOOOOOOORINGGGGGGGGG. lol
class was very easy. midterm was extremely easy, straight from the lecture notes. read the textbook!
This class will put you to sleep. SO BORING. I did not pay attention in class at all. Just take the notes and have it all memorized right before the midterm and final which are super easy. There is one paper that is 5 pages, but it is not bad at all. Easy class but VERY boring.
The class is pretty boring, save for his numerous voice cracks (there's a couple each class, and counting them was the most entertaining part of lecture). The midterm is easy, even if it's short. The material is really obvious, because it's taught for people who don't know ANYTHING about culture. Bottom line: easy but really boring.
extremely boring class, the ltest questions come straight from the lectures AND the readings though. must read a textbook and two novels which are both boring and tedious. questions are very specific in the tests about certain people and case studies so make sure you memorize all the pointless details. didnt study or pay attention and still got a b
it's sometimes hard to hear what he says since it's such a big class. attendance isn't mandatory, just get the notes from someone and study them for the exams. notes are a bit vague though. interesting at first, got a little tedious towards the end of the quarter.
I thought it was pretty interesting, he introduced a lot of concepts that were interesting to think about. I'm not interested in cultural anth really, but i did think it was somewhat interesting. The midterm and final were pretty easy and really short. both took 30 minutes tops. It's a good class to take for GEs
His lectures would be more interesting if the lecture hall weren't so big and his voice weren't so dull. But he *does* know his topic, even though he'd prefer to tell you about his 'water shortage in Mexico' research than anything else. Reading the assigned books is a waste of time, but reading the textbook is pretty important.
Takes what should be said in about two minutes and stretches it into an hour long lecture. Easy material to understand, tests are somewhat difficult though as knowing concepts gets you a C, memorizing random facts about obscure anthropologists will get you an A.
Strongly agree with the post below. The tests were so frustrating because they did not test you on actual anthropological concepts, but useless facts scattered throughout boring lectures and movies. Anthropology is interesting, but don't take this class.
Not a bad class at all. I would recommend it highly.
I went to maybe 1/5 of the lectures and studied for the final for maybe 3 hours and managed to pull an A-. Very easy class. For the tests, review lecture notes, movie notes, and the key terms from the book and you shouldn't find the test too hard. I thought a lot of it was pretty intuitive.
Walsh is legit. Discussion oriented class that made you think about pretty much everything you've learned in anthro and apply it to borderlands. A fun class. Probably useful if you don't present your class discussion in a monotone whisper.
never read the textbook, slept through lectures and movies and passed =]
This guy seriously lacks intelligence. All of the information I learned in the class could be summed up on one page of notes. He spends most of the lectures just repeating himself. Just use common sense on the tests to get an A. The extra reading is not worth your time, just a few questions on each tests about them.
Walsh is a great professor. He manages to not only present interesting topics, but lets students discuss them among themselves during class time. This cuts down on the monotany of a 1 and a quarter hour lecture. Definately worth taking.
This class was strange to say the least. Walsh constantly mumbles under his breath. In lectures, he talks about his trips to Mexico over and over again. The lecture material is uninteresting. And we had to participate in some ridiculous online project where we wrote a paper for this company yet we had to pay to register!
I am a freshman and this class killed anthropology for me. The lectures were impossible to follow and the online assignment was ridiculous. Professor Walsh's topic choice and presentation was incomprehensible and boring. If you are a freshman I recommend not taking this class or taking Anthro 5.
I did not enjoy this class. His lectures are boring and you have to do a stupid online project. The tests are only 40 questions and ask the most random things about case studies and anthropologists, but not a lot about key concepts. It's a pretty easy class though.
The class was pretty easy, but his lectures are so random and pretty boring. Midterm and Final weren't that hard, but he just throws random questions in there, but the class was okay.
Worst class ever. Do NOT take anthro 2! I thought it would be a fin and intersting class going into my first year of college, but I was very mistaken. Tests were random and lectures were pointless.
He's class was extremely easy i suggest attend lecture because for me most of the test was based on it! book wasn't that helpful but i still suggest reading it. he's class is boring but can be bearable if you are a patient person. He's an awesome person if you get to know him!
The class was fairly easy and most of the test questions were based on lecture but some of the questions were random. Go to lecture and study every detail on your notes because he would ask things that I wouldn't expect to be important. My T.A. was awesome so that helped a lot. Read the books assigned but don't stress on the little details.
Boring, boring, boring lecture. Easy, easy, easy tests. Essay was all made up. pointless to read the novel and the ethnography. it was an easy A. but a boring 50 minutes.
His lectures were pretty boring. The tests were extremely easy though. And even if you failed the tests, the two essays you had to write in the class would bring your grade back up. The essays are also extremely easy, and can be made up. You don't need to read the book to pass the tests.
Easy class, pretty simple. Showing up to lectures was boring but important for test. I didn't read any of the text and I just went off what we discussed in section. Pretty easy
I really enjoyed this class. Straightforward. Lectures were alright, T.A's were really helpful. The book we had to read was interesting. i have to say one of my favorite classes.
i loved this class. my favorite of the quarter by far, he is really into the subject matter and it shows, the tests are fair if you do the reading and go to lecture. the sections correlate really well with lecture. he can get repetative in lecture but i loved the class so much. highly reccoment
Course material was so broad it was hard to gather any meaning beyond common sense. He seemed like a very nice, friendly and lighthearted guy, but he had no control over the class and everyone would leave ten minutes early WHILE he timidly told them to stay in their seats. Overall boring class
Seemed like a nice professor, approachable, likes his profession, but didn't quite seem to have the knowledge on what he was teaching on which was pretty funny. TONS of reading, but I think you can get by without doing any of it. In class essay as midterm (he gave us possible test questions upon request which was super nice of him). 10 pg final.
He seems nice & but lectures are rarely enticing. Goes off on confusing tangents. Luckily, the book is easy to read. Just take notes on the required chapters each week, focusing on the vocab terms, and you'll be fine. Midterm was straight forward, I got a B+. If you're looking for an easy, undemanding class, take it.
You can tell Professor Walsh is very passionate about Anthropology and his work, however the class itself is usually pretty boring. You never really know what to expect, some days are interesting while others will put you to sleep. He talks a lot and his powerpoints aren't helpful so you have to take good notes on what he's saying for the exams.
I really did not enjoy this class. It was huge and extremely boring. There is a decent amount of reading. The tests did not reflect the class as a whole and were not good tests of you knowledge. Take a different anthro class. I do not recommend this class.
If you're the kind of guy who does well in history, the class is about as good as it gets. Never talked to him, but the lectures were very engaging and interesting. A lot of people do well in the class. However, if you're not very good at social science classes, then this might not be the easiest class. Go to every lecture.
His lectures are boring. His powerpoints aren't posted online so you should go to lecture. His powerpoints are uselss; what's important is what he's talking about. Tests seem to be more on random tidbits than important concepts. Makes you pay to use a website so that you can write a 2 page paper. Lectures are boring, but the workload is light.
This class is horribly boring. His lectures make no sense, and you need to know all the random info on the slides if you want any chance of passing. Pointless ethics project, paid $10 for no reason. Weekly reading. 5 page paper that is graded pretty easily.
easy, albeit boring, class. gives lectures which sometimes correspond with reading, other times the lectures are incredibly boring and I feel like I've learned little from them. Easy class overall though, if you attend section and try hard on your paper and do the reading you'll for sure get a B in the class.
Professor Walsh is very boring. I do not recall ever remaining conscious throughout any of his lectures. However, his class and exams are very easy. To be honest, you do not need to go to lecture to get a good grade in the class. I did not go to about 1/3 of lectures and did not read of the books, yet I got an A-
Nice guy. Easiest class you will ever take; took me 15 min to finish the final. I don't understand why some people dislike him; perhaps they weren't interested in the topic? But if you are interested, his lectures are great and will pay dividends. I especially like his case studies. He is a bit of an "activist", though. Also the class is huge FYI.
Class was very boring. Too many people, so sometimes hard to concentrate. Focuses on little details, and has a love of Mexico. Case studies were interesting, but did not go into much detail. Lectures skimmed material, all you really need to do is read the book and go to section. Lectures on Fridays are movies.
Lectures skimmed material and most things could be found in the book. Pretty boring. Nice guy but I wanted to die every lecture. Do well on the paper. Section participation, paper, midterm, and final are weighted equally.
This was a super easy class. All of his questions came from his lecture so don't skip. It helps if you write down extra notes otherwise the slides make no sense. And the book was pretty useless. Don't bother buying and reading it.
Frustrating class, so much potential. tests are subjective, so i found it unfair. Example question: all of these answers are correct, but which one is best? Ended up with a B- and studied like a crazy person
Pretty good professor. I rarely used the book, as almost everything was reviewed in the lecture. Is in love with Mexico and uses it as his primary example. The lectures do tend to be on the boring side, and I would recommend taking additional notes, not just copying down the slideshows.
The lectures are extremely boring. What was discussed in lecture, the book and section didn't seem to overlap. The midterm and final had extremely random questions that weren't on key concepts. I studied a lot but found the questions to be unfair because they were on minor, insignificant details, although they were all multiple choice.
This guy is so boring. I feel like he drones on about nothing forever. I didn't do the reading and got a 'B' so I'm sure if you keep up in the textbook, getting an A will be easy. He also talks way too much about Mexico because that's his area of expertise. He also missed the first two lectures because he was in Mexico.
I took this class because it seemed interesting but I was dead wrong. The material is beyond boring and I stopped going to lecture. The midterms didn't have much to do with the book so I never read. I had a really good TA who was much more helpful than Walsh though. Unless you have to, I wouldn't recommend taking this.
Really good guy overall
I thought this class would be more interesting than it was. I only go to lecture because I am even more lost in my section--my TA barely teaches us anything or goes over any material and has a really strong accent which makes it hard to understand. Walsh goes on about random societies and I'm never sure what's going to be on the tests or not.
Good god was this class boring. I was so excited to learn about anthropology, but it was one of the worst experiences of my life because it was that boring.
Don't let the reviews on here fool you. From what I noticed in lecture, most people were either asleep or on Facebook. If you actually go in wanting to learn and pay attention now and then, this class isn't bad at all! Pretty easy, and if you go to Walsh's office hours, you will find that he's a pretty interesting, chill guy.
Great class and very interesting. If you study the text, attend lecture and section and take good notes, then you will do great (as if you follow this procedure in any other class). I highly recommend it. There is a big paper due at one point in the quarter, it is really simple if you follow the rubric, I got an A it by doing so
Professor Walsh and his TA's are really nice but their tests have a few questions on it that don't even come from the book or the lectures. A lot of questions were subjective. Boring material. my TA Diana was really nice, but she was not the most efficient. The paper is easy, take advantage of its points. USE THE KEYTERMS FOR THE TESTS.
Easy class. Attend lecture and take notes on the ppt b/c his tests are probably 99% based off of that. One paper which was easy (class median 91%) an online ethics project which is P/NP pretty much and the final. Section is what you make it so it can be a joke or super helpful. The text was confusing but you can read it for further understanding.
Walsh is pleasant to listen to during lecture, although I found the material boring. The midterm and final are easy and straight forward IF you read the book Small Places Large Issues. Questions come directly from the book. If you put the effort in, this class is an easy A.
Walsh was a great professor! I'm not sure why everyone keeps rating him as boring - I thought the lectures were extremely interesting and found him to be a very intelligent guy. The class is fairly easy: half of the test is based on reading, half of the test is based on lecture. Take this class! It has been my favorite class yet.
Very easy A. Knowing key terms and paying attention to lecture will guarantee a good score on the midterm/final. I though Walsh was interesting and passionate about his research.
He's a really nice guy and does explain himself well, but the lectures drone on for sure. Definitely an easy class though, good GPA bump.
Easy A, but the lectures were honestly sooooo boring. My friend and I both spent most of the quarter fooling around on our phones. And the textbook was super hard for me to understand; it was really frustrating. Paper was easy. I'm sure Walsh is a cool dude, but I honestly hope that I never have to take another class by him.
Super boring class. Only copied down the slides. Paper was pointless but graded easy. (Don't get writing credit...) My friend slept most of the lectures & got an A. We never touched the books except to look up words on the study guide. STUDY THE KEYTERMS & READ OVER THE LECTURE.
The class was a little boring and vague, but it was easy. Walsh was into the subject and made everything easy to follow. The midterms were simple and the paper was graded nicely, making this professor and class great for a GE
The class was really boring to me but the teacher was super kind and helpful. I had Weston McCool as a TA and he was one of the best TAs I've ever had. I never really did any of the reading, so that was probably my downfall. But I still got a B anyway. So if you just go to class and do the reading there should be no problem getting an A. :)
I took this course my first quarter and it wasn''t too hard. I did the reading the first week and didn''t touch my book again until midterms and finals came around. He''s really easy-going but his lectures tend to be on the dry side. I''d have fallen asleep if I didn''t sit in the front but he was helpful when I went to office hours.
I personally found his lectures interesting! Most people did not, however.. I enjoyed the subject matter, even though a lot of it was pretty straight-forward. If you attend lectures, and do the readings you will get an A! Understand the key terms.
Didn't really attend the lectures, didn't do the reading, only went to the sections because it is part of your grade. He gives you the tests a week before and who have time to quickly research those questions. Paper was easy, did it all the night before and got a B. If you need an easy Class for Area D, this is the one for you.
Walsh, seems very enthusiastic about the subject and if I hadn't actually zoned out in lecture I probably would've gotten something out of it. It's a good class and the concepts are easy to learn, I just wish he focused more on the actual subject than his own personal studies.
Smart guy, very passionate about anthropology. Very easy class, super light workload. Reading is not at all necessary as long as you attend lecture and take awesome notes. The content is boring at times, but it's better to go to lecture than read the book. The midterm and final (non-cumulative) are given to you beforehand to prepare the essays.
Nice professor, but extremely boring class unless for some reason you like Anthropology, and even then it is still probably boring. Easy class but would only take it unless you legitimately are interested in the subject because it is so boring.
The class was the most boring class that I have ever taken. I have never fallen asleep in a high school class, but nearly the entire class felt drowsy from listening to his lectures. However, you must go to class to get the information on the PPTs needed for his midterms. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS CLASS! YOU MUST ARGUE EVERYTHING FOR YOUR GRADE!
Amazing lectures, super interesting, lectures are a little long but he is a very clear speaker and the content is interesting so it makes up for the long-ness. A must take!! Reading the text helps and its also really interesting but I found that it doesn't help all that much since the majority of the concepts will be in the lectures.
Took this class because I had no other option. I never read the textbook, nor did I ever pay much attention in class. It was boring, but the professor was very passionate about the subject. I probably would not take this class again just because it I am not interested. I would say the class is pretty easy, and you can easily get an A if you read.
I took this class because I thought it would be an easy, interesting GE. I was wrong about the interesting part. It was pretty boring but the professor is nice. Sections are not helpful but attendance is for points. Final and midterms are easy. You have to write a paper where you have to interview people. Overall quite boring and wish I didn't take
I loved Prof. Walsh , but the class itself was SO boring :( boring slides too. Probably would've gotten an A if I read the textbook. Grade is based on section, midtermfinal and paper. Midterm and final weren't multiple choice unfortunately, but timed essays. Overall okay class, but gets a GE out of the way. Walsh was helpful during office hours
Interesting lectures, uses powerpoint very well which is important for visual learners. Tells funny stories from his own anthro experiences to help you remember the course material, very approachable, tons of TA's ready to assist. Uses textbook, notes, a few writings. midterm final are essay Q's you have a week to prep for. Be thorough!
Lecture very useless. Don't need to go. He goes in circles over same ideas. If you are looking for easy A, you gota be good at writing. If you are looking for a B, this is the class for you as you are basically guaranteed if you are in any way decent at writing. For midtermfinal, you are given 5 questions in which he picks 2-3 for you.
Material was straight forward and interesting. Unfortunately, most of your grade is based on test-essays, which can be graded very hard if you get a bad batch of TAs. Would not recommend for science majors.
Pretty boring lectures, but it is obvious Walsh is very passionate about anthropology. He gives you the exam questions a week in advance so you can prepare you short answers. An easy A if you put in the work the few weeks its needed during the quarter.
What was potentially an easy A ended up being an easy B. Lectures were boring to mildly interesting. Don't really need to read the book. Midterm and Final were straight forward. One small but annoying research paper. Professor seems like a nice guy and is enthusastic about the subject but the material is dry and very broad.
BORING! I rarely went to lecture. I never read so I ended up with a B. He gave us the midterm and final prompts in advance so we could prep so that was pretty chill. Some online assignment was required and it was pretty much a no passpass. We had one paper, it was pretty straightforward. Overall, pretty easy class but very boring professor.
Relatively easy class. Harder than need be for a G.E however. Ok lectures, can tend to be boring at times, but if you do the readings he will go over things that you have read which will make it more entertaining. Midterm and final are graded pretty hard so make sure to talk to your T.A beforehand to get a sense of what they're looking for.
it was a pretty neutral class, definitely easier than Anthro 5. You will need to write an ethnography report, but it isn't too hard. The final and mid-term test are essay questions he gives before hand, he will select some from a list he provides you. Make sure to outline the essays and prepare for them.
Walsh is one of the nicest and most caring professors I have had! He can be a bit awkward sometimes. The class is purely discussion based and you do have to write summaries before each class. It is a lot of reading and it can get overwhelming but the readings are usually really interesting. Good class, easy A if you do all the work!
You barely need the textbook because he explains everything in class. This class is literally an intro to anthro do not expect specific information everything is quite broad. A lot of the class is self explanatory like how humans adapt with environment. It talks about anthro methods and such. Overall, easiest course no need to pay attention.
I really enjoyed his lectures I found them interesting. You do need the book, overall just know the concepts, go to section, and study.
This class was not the most interesting (in my opinion) but definitely was easy. Your grade is based off of the midterm, final, and one paper. Reading is assigned weekly, usually a chapter or two from the textbook. Honestly, you don't have to go to lecture, just try and get the notes. Gives out questions for midterm and final beforehand!!
Professor Walsh is not the best professor in terms of clarity. However, you must listen to him during lectures to get most of the information. Aside from that, your grade is based on a midterm and final in which he gives the question for beforehand, and a simple paper. The textbook helped significantly when it came to the midterm and final.
Very boring lectures. They look for very specific answers on the midterm. They do not care about individual students in this class. TA Erin B. is very unhelpful, abrupt, unfriendly, and borderline condescending - must avoid her. You need the book and you need to get a TA that will help you out as they determine your entire grade.
Well first Anth2 is a really interesting class. It's clear Walsh is very knowledgeable in his field and he even talks about some of his own fieldwork which is cool. A lot of students think he's a boring lecturer, but if you focus on the content and stay engaged he's really interesting! Rando but he reminds me of a cute little soccer dad lol
You can tell he has a knack for what he's talking about. Little bland in his lectures, but overall very clear and concise, and gives you a lot of stuff to use on your midterm and final papers. The ethnography he had us read was very interesting, and I wouldn't mind reading it again. I did well in the class with little effort, and I'm a math major.
His class is pretty easy. He's very interested about the topic, but the lectures can be dry. Didn't even read the textbook. There is an essay style midterm and final, but he gives you a study guide a week before. There is also a 6-page ethnographic paper that is easy if you don't procrastinate the night before. Tests have a lot of writing however.
He's obviously very passionate about the material, though his lectures can be kind of dry. His lectures do contain, however, cases you can use as examples for the midterm and final (which he gives you a study guide for - Midterm: 2 essays in 50 minutes; Final: 3 essays in 90 minutes)
Walsh is a pretty funny man. His lectures are pretty dry, but are super helpful for the midterm and final. Got all my info from the book because i never went to lecture. I would have probably gotten an A if I actually attended lecture. Go to lecture and you won't need the books.
Overall a pretty cool guy and a decent lecturer. Make sure to get a good TA since they are the ones who do the entire grading for this course. And if you aren't going to go to lecture, you WILL have to read. The exams are unpassable unless you read the textbook.
He's really into what he teaches, but the lectures are really boring. I barely went to class and did the assigned readings. I got an A- only because my TA was really good at explaining examples in the readings. Questions for exams are provided beforehand to prepare.
Lectures are terribly long and dry. He has passion in what he does, but its not an intro class where you specifically learn parts of anthropology. Its just him recalling a bunch of past events and his own fieldwork. Your grade is an online project, one paper, midterm and final (essays). GO TO CLASS. The tests info is straight from the lectures.
Lectures were fairly interesting. Midterm and final are easy; they give you the essay questions beforehand. Easy A.
Investing class and basically common sense.
This was an easy A for me but a friend got a C- so its not for everyone. I liked the topic I wrote about for my paper (ended up getting a 90% on that) which was a big reason I got such a good grade. The midterm and final questions are given to you ahead of time so plan out exactly what you're going to write about and ask TAs for clarification.
Pretty easy, he gives the midterm and final questions in advance so we could prepare before time. The paper was pretty straight forward I BS'd it and managed to get a B. I bought the books but rarely opened them and still managed to get a decent grade. He is very passionate about the class but he is also very boring
He tends to ramble on during lectures but literally goes over everything that you're "supposed" to be reading. Only projects you have are the ethnographic paper and the Dewey project. Midterm and final questions are given beforehand. All a matter of paying attention.
This class wasn't too difficult... if you went to lecture. Midterm and final questions were taken from lecture so its important that you have the notes, questions are given beforehand so you can prepare. Textbook not super mandatory but will help. This class wasn't too interesting and he goes into extreme detail on trivial things.
I didn't really enjoy all of the material that was presented in this class, but it wasn't unbearable. Dr. Walsh is pretty enthusiastic. The midterm and final tests aren't too bad, but they definitely should be taken seriously. I made the mistake of "feeling it out" on the midterm and paid for it. Do the readings and go to lecture as he doesn't post
If you miss class for any reason, Walsh doesn't post the lectures online, making it very difficult to catch up unless you can get notes from someone else in the class.
This class is pretty easy if you do that work. Don't procrastinate on the ethnographic paper, its worth a quarter of your grade. There aren't many opportunities for extra points, so don't slack off on the midterm, paper, or final because those are what make up your grade.
I took this class for GE requirement. It was okay actually but you have to read the textbook. Both lecture notes and the book will be on midterm and final.
Walsh is a pretty good professor but lectures can get dull. We read a good portion of the textbook, but it wasn't horrible material. One paper, an online project and this boring ethnography. Not too bad.
Two textbook used. The professor gave us two weeks(during the final) to read a 177-page book and my TA told me it would take 15% of final exam. I read them all but finally found there was only one question related to this book. Too many films to watch, each lasting about 1.5 hours. The average grade of my final is C+ but no curve.
Walsh is pretty nice dude and is clearly passionate about the subject. Going to lecture is necessary since he doesn't post slides online. Midterm and final were both only 40 multiple choice questions so nothing too difficult.
Lectures were VERY boring, the multiple choice midterm and final were relatively easy if you study the lectures and skim the textbook.
Lectures were VERY boring, the multiple choice midterm and final were relatively easy if you study the lectures and skim the textbook. A pretty easy class to take for credits.
Passionate but boring. Easy A for a ge. Theres two tests and one paper
It's a basic intro class that I recommend. Professor doesn't post slides so I suggest going to lecture because he can ask questions about it on the midterm and final. There's also a study guide so if you know the terms and go to lecture you'll do fine in the class. He's a nice professor although the lectures could be dry at times.
This class really got me interested in ANTH. The lectures are rather slow and people fall asleep all the time, but there's a lot of really interesting topics involved. Section is important, I did good on the paper for this class thanks to the prep in my section. Overall, you can do well on both midterm and final fairly easily. Just pay attention.
Keep up with the reading, study your notes, and do all the side stuff he says to and this class will be a breeze. The midterm and final are free if you study enough, and the paper is either super easy or kinda hard depending on how hard your TA grades it.
This class is supposed to be about culture, but Walsh made it about agriculture and it was boring! He made a good portion of the test, which changed this year to multiple choice, about his lectures that were hard to follow and the power points were minimal at best. The book, which is the only good thing about the class, was barely tested on.
Walsh is pretty straight forward. Whatever he says you should learn is what is usually on tests. Grades very fairly.
Fine teacher but his lectures can be pretty boring because he'll talk go into minute details of specific case studies instead of lecturing on the actual topics of the course. Regardless, decently easy to get an A. Midterm is way easier than final. Midterm textbook terms. Final textbook terms/themes, lectures, movies, etc.
Professor Walsh's tests are really heavily based on both the book and the material in his lectures (which is no where in the textbook). You have one main paper to do, along with a multiple choice midterm and final. His lectures can get a little boring because he teaches his beliefs or previous projects, but it's a relatively easy class.
Super nice and friendly guy. Lectures varied and sometimes were almost completely unrelated to the readings. Midterm/final was VERY lecture-heavy, so go to class. I personally thought the one paper was interesting and not too hard, and the class overall was a breeze and fairly graded. Ended up getting an A+ with minimum effort.
Prof Walsh seems like a good guy, but his lectures get very boring. I tend to tune them out, but I am doing fine as of now. There is 1 midterm, the final, an ethnographic paper, 2 online exercises, and participation that makes up your grade. It's pretty easy overall. (The due date for our paper was the Monday after Thanksgiving which sucked.)
Super great person to talk to during office hours.
I hope you don't mind watching Pro-Communism propaganda films. He is a communist and is not shy about it. If you hate capitalism and love communism, you will love him. His lectures are very boring, he can't pronounce the word "gourd" and that was amusing, but otherwise, get plenty of sleep before class or you will pass out during lecture.
Lectures were pretty boring but overall an easy class if you take notes. Review key terms in textbook and you will do fine!
Class is graded on 5 things: a paper, 2 online projects (full credit if completed), a midterm, a final, and attendance in the sections. iClicker is not needed and he links you to the textbook which you really DON'T need to read. If you attend the lectures and take good notes you'll do amazing. Just make SURE to attend lectures and PAY ATTENTION!
Prof Walsh is freakin awesome!! The class itself was really interesting and we have somewhat of a heavy load of reading but its interesting! I would definitely take him again, awesome for a G.E.
This class is an easy GE. Your grade is based on participation (100 points) , an ethnographic paper (100 points) , midterm (100 points) , final (100 points) , and an online assignment (100 points). GO TO LECTURE. About 3/4 of his exams are based on his lectures DIRECTLY taken from lecture slides. He doesn't post lecture slides. TAKE DETAILED NOTES!
I would take this class again if I really had to. I didn't go to some lectures and was fine, but what Walsh presents on the slides is on the exams. I simply had friends send me the notes. I thought there was too many irrelevant tasks like an assignment online and my TA's weekly assignments. Midterm, final and class grades: B
His lecture's are pretty boring but he cares. Lots of reading, but exams are multiple choice. Syllabus is pretty clear.
I am a biology major and HATED anth2. Not Prof. Walsh's fault though, I would have hated it no matter who taught it. Too much like a history class for me. He is obviously very passionate about anthropology and it is evident by the way he talks in lectures. Memorize "key terms" and you will be fine.
I stopped going to lecture after the second class. Too boring and a waste of time imo. I just went to most sections, B on the midterm paper, got a B on the midterm exam and a C on the final. Overall I finished with a B, which ill easily take for having never gone to lecture or really studying at all.
So glad I got the chance to take this class with Professor Walsh! He's a very passionate lecturer and is more than willing to help students struggling with the subject and I never thought anthropology would be a subject I'd be interested in. Do the readings and take good notes and you should be more than fine.
Loved this professor. Super motivated and dedicated to his work. 10/10 recommend. It's an easy A.
Prof Walsh seems like a nice guy, but his lectures tend to be really dry so sometimes it's hard to maintain focus. I was excited for this class, but I felt like it was more history based that I got bored quickly. I still tried in this class, but it was just rough to focus.
Terrible teaching, the class is so boring. He basically spend 50 minutes talking nothing.
awful experience writing a huge long essay for this class. Not even a writing-area class would do that to me.
Really boring lectures, after 2 I stopped going but I had notes from a previous quarter. Midterm and final online, long ethnographic paper which can be difficult or easy depending on the quarter's topic. Exams HEAVILY lecture based. Very easy class, take if you need to balance a heavy/difficult unit load or if you just want an easy A.
Lectures were SO boring. Professor Walsh's lectures were dry and unengaging. They were also never related to readings. Easy A though. Midterm and final are online. Little direction was given for the ethnographic paper but go to your TAs office hours to see what the want.
Anth 2 was a really nice introduction into anthropology. There was nothing really special about his lectures but they were easy to follow and the tests were straightforward.
Easy class, just watch the lectures and read what he assigns. The weekly journals and mini exams are straightforward.
Trying to stay focused during async lectures was like pulling teeth. Annoyed that there was so much writing when it doesn't even give writing credits. You have to write journal entries, a letter, peer review, and the "mini exams" are all written. The amount of writing was beyond. I'd like to add that I did well in this class but I'm very bothered.
As someone else said, everything is written but you get no WRT credit. Grade made up of 6 journal entries, 3 mini exams, section/participation, and an essay/letter. Both exams and entries 300 words. 4-6 lectures each week, incredibly boring, barely tolerable at 2x speed. Easy material but a lot of it was debatable/opinions presented as fact.
Professor Walsh is super sweet and intelligent. The case studies in this class were super interesting and it went beyond common sense, like a lot of other intro anthro classes. The lectures were pretty boring and while easy, there is a lot of writingan ethnographic journal, an ethics paper, and 3 short essay exams.
I'm not sure why everyone is complaining about the writing on here. It's one page a week essentially, and you're writing about yourself. You can literally skip every lecture and just attend the sections (the section attendance is graded) and pass. I took this during my last term and it was incredibly straightforward.
super easy class Papers and exams are only 300 words, you can do it in a day. As long as you're trying you'll get a good grade. I barely read the main textbook and did well. You may have to read the other book assigned but not the full thing
You could tell Professor Walsh was very passionate about what he was teaching. He is really nice and it was overall a really good course. The lectures at times were hard to get through.
Elaborated a lot about the slides in lecture and you can tell how passionate he is about the material. No knowledge mcq tests, but rather tons of writing, which I preferred. There was a lot of assigned reading, but honestly I just focused in lecture, as well as section, and I did pretty good off of that. Just skimmed through reading.
His lectures are a little confusing but he really cares about his students especially those that show interest in the course. There are 4 mini exams + 1 make-up exam if needed, and 2 easy projects. The mini exams are all mini essays and I am not really too sure what they are graded on, plus they are worth a big part of your grade.
He is definitely passionate about what he teaches and cares about his students. Go to lecture to do well in the class.
He was extremely passionate about the class and the subject matter. I could tell he truly enjoyed teaching and really cared about his students. Grades depended on participation section, a 1500 word ethnographic paper, an in-class one question midterm, and an online multiple choice final. Weekly homework was textbook readings. Great class!!
He was super into the material, but his lectures were so boring. They also didn't include much information. A lot of readings, but you can get by without doing them. 1 short, 2-page, in-class essay for the midterm that he pre-releases the question for, 1 online MCQ final exam, and 1 paper that you have to interview people for. Easy, but boring.
Walsh is a nice guy who is passionate about his field, the class itself was very easy There's an in-class midterm that he gives the essay question for in advance, a 5-page paper, and online final I didn't do any readings and only showed up to a quarter of the lectures and got an A, just prepare for those assignments/tests and it's wraps
Professor Walsh is passionate about the subject matter, though his lectures can be dry. The class workload is manageable - just do the readings, attend section, and prepare for the short papers and exams. unstuck AI was a huge help with study prep too.
Loved Walsh. He's pretty funny and well versed in anth. He connects course concepts really well making them easier to understand. Readings and films are pretty interesting. Only thing is he doesn't post slides and the slides in class are very, very bare. Attendance isn't mandatory but he explains everything there.
You can tell Walsh loves what he lectures on but the lectures themselves are so dry. Your average white powerpoint with Arial font and 3 bullet points, where he then proceeds to yap for 20 mins per slide. Midterm was in class paper, final was online, very easy if you do the readings. I found the readings more interesting than lecture, cool class.
Did a pretty good job at explaining the material but TAs can be pretty strict graders so grade mostly depends on them. Pretty nice as well and seemed very passionate abt the subject but lectures are sometimes very tiring and somewhat boring, readings weren't too bad. Overall, he's nice and knowledgeable but the topic might just be a little boring.
People who took this class with other professors told me that it would be interesting but Walsh specifically found a way to make it so boring. An 8 slide lecture with three bullet points each can easily take the full hour 15. He seems very passionate but I just couldn't sit through the lectures. Graded on in class essay, online final, and a paper.
Walsh cares a lot about his material and seems great but lectures were so dry. Literally a white screen with 2-3 vague bullet points that mean nothing. Midterm was graded SO HARSH and the instructions were so confusing. Final was online and open note. Section was mandatory. Also 6 page paper that we were given zero help with. Would not recommend!
Graded by section attendance/participation (25%), ethnographic paper (5 pgs; 25%), in-class midterm essay (25%), and online final exam (25%). He does indeed have slides with three bullet points and spends much of the time talking, so it's not for everyone. Walsh is passionate + tries his best to make the material interesting, even if it gets dry.
