Honestly, if you can get with another professor PLEASE DO!!!! she doesn't allow study guides or anything on tests no curves, wants you to memorize EVERYTHING!!! EXAM HEAVY only reads off the slides, lecture not mandatory but workshop is. this is will be a self taught chem class! HW is insane, nothing she gives on study guides are on exams.

this is a self-taught chem class. the text book is terrible, homework and proctored closed book exams are 40%, no make ups, no one ever knows what's going on. just don't take this class if you care about your grades,

HORRIBLE!! She wants to leave right away after class so we can't even talk to her. She is never in her office during office hours. I email her and no response. She reads off the slides and always messes up when showing us examples during lecture. I have basically taught myself. Don't get her as a professor if you want to learn and have good grades.

None of the exams have curves, Can't use anything on the exam, does not provide ANY formulas in exams, no extra credit or retakes, will not response to emails, took 18 days to get a response, the lectures are just slides, this is 100% self taught, the material is taught as if it's a higher level class.

it's mid semester in this class and quite frankly i regret taking this class so much, day 20 of no response of her fixing one of my grades. closed book exams, she doesn't believe in extra credit, she only reads off of slides, doesn't teach, all exams have been horrible experiences not enough time and no curve, she will ruin your gpa

I had to drop this class cause the reviews are right this is one of the most ridiculous classes i have ever taken, i was retaking this class cause im in premed and i got a C but this time i was 100% going to fail this class, no open book, no retakes, no extra credit, she is absolutely one of the more ego filled professor i have ever taken

The quizzes are closed-book, proctored, and there's no extra credit offered. The instructor is slow to respond to e-mails and seems uncertain about her teaching. Grades aren't posted consistently, making it hard to track your progress, the course feels more self-taught than guided. If you're focused on maintaining your GPA, don't take this class.

She was not a great professor. She was unsure when teaching her lectures and she would only read off slides. She wouldn't help her students. When students asked her questions, she would seem bothered or completely avoid the question. I emailed her about 5 times and texted her through blackboard and she NEVER replied.

I have done nothing but talk to this professor to see if i can create a connection with her to user her a rec letter for med school, worst mistake ever, nothing i did was enough for her, she was so unprofessional from my personal experience, she does not care for the students, and she is very very ego filled, do not take her, avoid this teacher

She is the WORST professor I've had. Inconsistent with putting in grades- not one homework grade is posted, and we are almost done with the semester. She doesn't look like she wants to be there, her teaching style is horrible, and she doesn't answer emails. To put it simply, she doesn't care. Take it with someone else and avoid the headaches.

Only use powerpoint to teach her lectures, she is knowledgeable about chemistry but the way she teaches doesn't help beginners. She goes though the slides so fast without explaining much of the process and she just do them. Exams for 40% of your overall credit and the final exam is worth about 25% by itself so failing even one test is not an option

You can tell shes fairly new and she seems kind, I want to like her but I CANT. She moves quickly with little explanation of concepts, she basically just states what shes doing not teaching. She gives difficult homework on ALEKS and her exams are also difficult. Everything I've learned has been from workshop and Youtube. DO NOT TAKE HERRR

I went to the other prof review session today and let me tell you, i've learned more than i have with her, if you have a chance take the other prof, this professor does not care if we pass no curves and like someone mentioned 40 % for just exams, so you have to do sm studying on your own

I put in the effort, attended class, read the book, & even studied with peer leaders. I understood the material and this class was still one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. DEF RECOMMEND ANOTHER PROFESSOR! She drops lowest exam, but the tests feel like they are purposefully made to make you fail, and they are worth most of your grade. :(

I regret registering late cause I had to take this professor, i have done everything in my power to study and learn it, and i have a grasp on everything, but the exams are so insane. And the professor mid semester stated "she is no longer willing to provide study guides" to save your grade get another prof also she doesn't believe in extra credit

I would completely not recommend this professor. The whole class was already thinking of dropping the class the first week of school. She really does not know her material well, students would correct her constantly. She makes the class so hard for us by assigning homework every week and lockdown quizzes for every chapter.

I should have dropped this class when i had the feeling, she is exam heavy 40% of your grade (4exams) hw is jsut 10% final is 25 and so is the workshop, so if you fail on exam you won't be able to get back up, she will not work with you for extra credit or make ups, she does not curve, and all exams are closed note closed book in person

exams are insane, if you're gonna take her make sure you are dedicating 6-7 hours a day learning on your own, peer leaders do help but she will start making the exam the day before cause every time we ask what's on it she said she doesn't know yet, so beware

Take juan noveron for the sake of your sanity, he treats his class like an actual freshman class, as for her she does not, she does not teach, messes up on all the slides, does not provide any wiggle room for our grades, only exam and hw which does nothing to your grade lol she seems like she HATES teaching this class, and again will not work w/u

I dropped this class to take juan noveron next semester, cause Cassandra Monarrez is one of the worst professors ever, she will not help you, she refuses to give us reviews, and she does not believe in extra credit, her exams are nothing she says they are, she is unresponsive, and unwilling, and ALL EXAMS ARE IN PERSON with no notes formulas

Monarrez is very confident in her ability to teach! Although I got a good grade, I had to teach myself as she makes the lectures difficult for no reason. Thank you LAWD for the peer leaders as they are our saving grace. Without them i'd be even worse off. If you take this class be prepared to WORK! and cry.

Her class is very difficult, his exams are very difficult because he doesn't explain well and most of the time he makes mistakes in his explanations.

I wouldn't recommend this professor! I love science, especially chemistry, but she made this class unnecessarily difficult. She rushed through the lectures and was still behind, so the labs were never aligned with the lectures. ALL the students were confused during her lectures and doing the homework. YouTube was a better professor than she was.

DON'T take this class with her. Grades were never updated timely, emails went unanswered for weeks to a month, don't expect feedback or assistance. She was rarely in her office during posted hours. Dismissive during class. Lectures were read directly from the slides. She came unprepared with examples. Quizzes with LockDown. TopHat was annoying.

Monarrez was not a good professor. The lectures were based off slides and a lot of content. She rushed every lecture. When asked questions during lecture she wouldn't know the answer and just forget the question. She doesn't reply to emails. The class helped each other out by doing quizlets and sending lectures they would watch online.

Where do I start? The teacher is new, and it was obvious that she often didn't seem to understand the material. She would roll her eyes and answer sarcastically and sometimes aggressively when you asked something. I spent the entire semester learning on my own to pass some of her assignments.

Do not take her class I learned nothing from her and the only time I would learn was during the workshop and there was only so much my peer leader could do. Exams are super hard and she is not a very good teacher, please take Castillo.

This professor does not know what she is doing, tends to contradict herself when solving examples which leads to confusion specially when it's a new topic. She does not really care about any questions you may have or tends to give useless answers to your question. Workshop IS the only reason I understand what material is being covered.

Very difficult to even achieve an A, 80`s on your test wont cut it despite having A`s on your homework and workshop, expects high grades for tests despite not helping us succeed, learned more, if not everything from workshop over her class, terrible teacher. for future students, good luck tanking your GPA score thanks to this teacher

if i can tell you one thing, is this professor just sets her students up for failure, she provides reviews, but 1. doesnt tell us the answers, 2. does not tell us if its on the test, 3. its never on the test. each exam is 40 % of your grade and once you fail an exam theres no way to get your grade back up since no extra credit and hw is 10%

Realistically if you take the time to truly apply yourself, you can succeed. BUT do know that professor monarrez will throw every possible curveball at you to see you fail. Chemistry aint a walk in the park, thank god for peer leaders!

I didn't learn the material from her lectures, I learnt the material from the amazing Peer Leaders and by teaching myself. Obviously there's a lot of slides and content heavy, but come on guys it's a hard subject. She does get lost while working through problems, confusing students. But if you work through them youslf you'll be fine.

If you want to be frustrated then take her I understand Chem is a difficult subject, but she never came to class prepared and just read off the slides. She never answered emails and never put in grades so you were always guessing. Her quizzes are lockdown browser camera on. And exams are in person. I do NOT recommend taking her.

Read only off PowerPoints designed in a way that makes it impossible to understand outside of lecture, homework accounts for 10% of your grade with no extra credit, reviews weren't worth any credit, lied about exam 3 review not being worth extra credit, had a TA tell our class, reviews never match what's on actual exam. honestly this class wouldn't have been as bad if she would be actually helpful, every time i would ask her for help she wouldn't know the answers or tell me to send it in an email then would never respond, the reviews were NOTHING like the exams, the exams were also nothing like any of the hw, so it was just a mess and poorly taught and organized

Most of your grades are based on exams which she did post reviews for but the things on the review were barely on the test and she doesn't offer any extra credit either. avoid this professor, even with getting a 65 on the final im still at a low C, and she has been EXTREMELY unresponsive, we had our final on tuesday and she barely uploaded our finals on friday night, meaning i have no idea if i passed this class, just a small FYI class average for this class is at a 64... out of over 300 students

Youd be better off teaching yourself. If you somehow get stuck with this professor like a lot of us did, prepare for a serious tank in your GPA. For the sake of your GPA, I recommend you do NOT take any classes with her. She provides reviews however none of the material is on the exams and test distribution is slow so most of the time you will be left with 30 min to do a 25 question exam in class. The homework is heavy and is only 10% of your entire grade, exams are 60%, and seminar is 30%.

Professor literally just reads off the powerpoint slides. She has no passion on how she teaches, worst professor ever literally. Exams are barely over anything we go over , please do not take this class , it's to that point. I hope the Dean or whoever is her boss sees that she is a horrible Professor

Do NOT take this class. She doesn't know half her material. She uses Aleks and Aleks is incorrect most of the time and often contradicts her teaching. She doesn't follow her own syllabus nor does she communicate efficiently. (she says attendance is graded but nowhere in the syllabus does it say anything about attendance)

She was awful. In lecture on topics, she did not understand her own material. In an attempt to explain said material, she would pull up the homework, and then fail the homework, and get mad at ALEKS (the homework site). She would often tell us to "memorize" rather than us to learn the material and the why behind it. DON'T TAKE CHEM WITH MONARREZ!

This is one of the worst professors at UTEP. Avoid her at ALL costs. Most of the students in her class have 60's. I am really regretting not dropping this class when I had the chance. It is really sad when most of the class cannot pass her class.

The Chem Department at UTEP is a mixed bag, with Monarrez being a perfect example as to why. Take Chem 1 with another professor, and if she is your only option for the semester, wait for the next and try to register early.

She is an extremely horrible teacher, i hope she reads this. She makes everything significantly so much harder than it needs to be, sees the results, and does not help the students. Instead, she proceeds to make things HARDER. when she herself doesn't know what she's talking about. If I could I would give her a 0.

Absolutely terrible lectures, very short and crammed with information. The most useful resource is the workshops, which teaches in-depth how to actually solve problems, whereas the professor does a few examples not really explaining her process or reasoning. The curriculum content is 70% high school chemistry. If you managed that you'll do fine.

The exams are so difficult, there was many hw. The teacher is kind and nice but it's very complicated in comparison with other friends in different class

Horrible horrible professor. If you can, try to avoid taking this class with her. She doesn't even understand most topics herself. She shouldn't be a professor, also she responds very late to emails or messages. The workshop with my peer leader is the only reason I kind of understand what's happening.
