DON'T BE AFRAID TO TAKE THIS CLASS!!! Everyone always talks about this class like its the most terrible thing ever! Yes, the reports are actually 20 pages long but there are only 4 of them in the quarter and one of them is a group written report. Literally the only knowledge you need is from BIPN 100. After you take BIPN 100 take this class!!!!!!!!
Catalina is one of the most amazing professors at UCSD! She's extremely personable & approachable, and great at explaining concepts. She's adorable and she tells funny stories as well! Take BIPN 106 (comparative physio) with her too if you can. She loves animals (she brings her dog to lecture) and you can tell she's very passionate about her work.
Catalina is the best!!! She is the sweetest, funniest and most amazing professor I have ever had at UCSD. Definitely take BIPN 105 with her because she makes the class so much better. I cannot imagine going through such a tough class with anyone else. Those horrific lab reports are definitely worth it when Catalina is your professor.
Wonderful woman and interesting topic. However, the grading system is extremely unforgiving. There are essentially three exams of equal value in points, so doing poorly on one will make it impossible to succeed in the class. She asks about every single detail she lectures on, so it is extremely difficult to study for. Vague grading system. :(
would take her class again
Definitely makes you work for it but doable. Two midterms (30% each), final (40%, or 35% w/5% clicker). Exams cover exactly what Catalina goes over in lecture, down to every detail. Pay attention in lecture, attend discussion, and re-listen to podcasts should get you a good grade! She is extremely friendly; she also brings her dog to class.
Catalina is easily my favorite professor who teaches courses within BIPN. She's extremely caring, she pauses to ensure people understand, she decorates her lectures with relevant experience which makes things easier to listen and relate to. She's available for office hours and really ensures you understand concepts rather than forcing brute mem.
She is a great prof. But her accent is strong, I'm having a hard time to understand what she is talking about even with 0.8x on podcast. Her first exam is extremely hard and mostly focus on week 1 and 2. Most of the class didn't finish the exam on time. She teaches too much details and the slides only have pictures, no explanation.
With professor Catalina it's not about memorization, but rather truly understanding what's going on. Her exams are for the most part application based, and all free response. Her midterms weren't that difficult, but her final was extremely challenging. She crammed 2 chapters before finals week, which we were expected to master in a weekend.
Not a great professor, lecture material was essentially the textbook skimmed down and repackaged. She cant even come up with her own metaphors and just uses the ones in the book. The good thing is youll do better than your peers by relying on the book (25 bucks on amazon for the paperback) than her lectures.
One of the most challenging, yet rewarding classes I've taken at UCSD. The experiments and dissections aren't too bad, but the lab reports are a challenge. 20 pages each, and very in depth. Make sure to attend lecture. Utilize TAs and Catalina. Catalina is super sweet and will answer all your questions. Generous curve as well. Study hard for final.
Nice lady for the most part, but many of her exam questions are poorly-written so unless it's a yes/ no/ circle question, don't be concise-- write more than you think you need to answer the questions to increase your chances of hitting the exact keywords that she is looking for.
Lectures are a vague exploration of topics at best, and slides are not really that helpful. No chance at doing well unless you do all the practice problems and read up on confusing info in the textbook. TAs will be your guide in what information is important for exams. Gotta know your stuff for the exams - her tests are a bear to get through.
Exam questions are vague; she asks you to be concise , but then takes points off if you get the answer right but don't mention extraneous information to demonstrate your command of the material. Good class and interesting material, but a lack of clear grading guidelines and heavy punishment for mistakes (lost 12% of my midterm from one mistake)
Physiology is a lot of memorization and she does a good job of walking you through what you need to know. Midterms are easy but the final is pretty difficult. Mandatory discussion sessions and lots of extra credit clickers in class.
Shes such a sweet professor but the class in my opinion shouldnt be taught during the summer because theres a lot of material covered in such a short amount of time. Other than that she tries her best to have all of us understand the material but exams and quizzes are very difficult. Nice curve to the class
Vry good and clear lecturer(she apologizes for her accent but it isn't that bad). The course itself was difficult but she was fantastic at explaining it! Very organized and sends you many reminders and weekly "plans." Test are hard, but reflective of the course. She takes a "memory" based class and makes tests applications of processes u'd memorize
One of the best professors I have taken at UCSD so far. Although her lectures are dense and there is a lot of material to learn, she does a phenomenal job explaining the material and helping her students any way she can. She truly cares about her students and is reasonable with exam content and curving the class.
Professor Catalina genuinely cares for her students. She is so sweet and approachable. You don't need the book because she tests from the lectures. Her lectures are dense and a little disorganized, so if anything is unclear ask her in office hours. Her tests are heavily application based. The problem sets are representative of test questions.
One of the worst instructors at UCSD. She is not knowledgeable and just read from slides. Her lectures are vague and you don't learn anything from her class. The worst part of her class is the grade the online quizze and assignment after 2 weeks and she just wants to see some words that she has in her mind, not the scientifically correct answer
Though her accent can be tricky at times it is no reason to pass on her as an instructor. If you are truly listening and following along it really isn't a problem. She does a great job of presenting the material. Some of her questions are unnecessarily tricky and, or far too specific. It's a tough class but not unreasonable.
By far the best, caring, kind, and knowledeble Professor I have ever ever known. Her lectures are easy to understand. she will help you alot in understanding the material. Her quizes are easy as long as you study for it. I recommend her %100. She is just the BEST and Sweet.
She is a very sweet professor but could make lectures a little more interesting, considering physiology is such an interesting class. Her lectures are somewhat hard to get through and she is very vague with her quizzes/tests until it is time to grade she will penalize you for not mentioning the exact words (that could have just been due to my IA).
Professor Catalina is nice and approachable in office hours but her lectures are some of the most disorganized I have ever seen at UCSD. She talks over powerpoint slides with diagrams without including clear bullet points of important information. Her homework and quiz questions are very vague , but most importantly her lectures are hard to follow.
just took the final and this was the hardest test I've ever had! she speaks unclear and just vomits words in her lectures. her questions are vague. I had to rewind every 5 sec to understand what she says. a 30 min lecture could take me 4 hours! she grades harshly and does not accommodate w students during this time.
Weekly quizzes but they're more like weekly exams which can be miserable to study for especially if you're taking many other upper divs or have to work outside of school. You need to really understand the topics to do well on the quizzes, she only gives 35 minutes for quizzes so you have to know everything off the top of your head to work fast.
Class is formatted weird. You end up having to learn 4-5 different chapters every week. Even at week 9, lots of people were still confused abt what we had to learn for that week. Her TAs had more helpful power points than she had. I don't recommend her if you work outside of school because studying for her weekly quiz is incredibly time consuming
weekly quizzes + assignments, talk SO fast in lecture video, have to rewind all the time 1 hr video could take 2-3 hr to take notes! quiz time very limited, i often did not finish in time + heavy conceptual questions where you have to connect all previous lectures to answer the questions. She is nice & sweet but I do not recommend her class!
hard class but she helps however she can. she tried a new method: 10 quizzes instead of midterm and final and even though we had to study every weak, but it actually helped our grades more. she speaks too fast and kinda unclear but she helps a lot on OH. she even offered extra OH on the final night. recommend taking the class w other easy courses!
Took her for BIPN100, where I was unsatisfied. She stepped her game up for BIPN102 in the best way. Her explanations are much more clear, her tests are straight forward, and she has become increasingly available for her students. She throws student's a lot of bones and genuinely cares. Def not an easy A, but what Physio class is?
Catalina was sweet and caring! This was her first time teaching this class and she was just so detail in the Respiratory system/Digestive system, not much in other areas. It was a lot of detailed information when I would have hoped for a broader understanding to be able to learn other systems. We were allowed 1 dropped quiz but no other assignments
This is literally the hardest class you could possibly take anywhere. Her personality, she is the sweetest person. But her exams are EXTREMELY difficult. I heard they were difficult but thought to myself they can't be that bad before taking her class... they're impossible to get an A on. Class average of 2 sections usually around 65 percent. Avoid!
Catalina is a really nice person and she does care about her students but this class was probably the hardest bio class I ever took. I studied every day for this class and made sure to go to office hours but will probably end up with a C :( a 60% is a passing grade in her class
Your entire grade is based on 5 quizzes and the final, that's it. Her lectures were so dense that it took me 2-3hrs to get through a 1 hr video. Her lecture slides have little to no words on them, she just puts up a diagram and rambles for 5 mins so be prepare write down everything she says. Every quiz had a D average and she didn't seem to care.
Prof Catalina is a really kind professor, and she is always prepared to answer questions. Although the lectures and quizzes are difficult, she trains us to think critically. The class is a bit stressful but manageable overall.
Pros: extremely nice and caring as a person very accessible outside of classroom. Overall, as a person, she's an angel. cons: if you want to tank your GPA, take her for 100. Spent 16 hours studying for one of her quizzes, got a 60% on it and was above the avg in class. Avg is usually in D- to F. Very dense and hard to understand lectures. Avoid...
Lectures go in one ear and out the other, you can't really understand unless you take the time to review the slides beforehand. You're better off learning from discussions or problem sets. 85% of the grade is based on tests, so you should learn to problem solve, not memorize anatomy. She does not really teach this in lecture, so again, do problems.
Catalina is an absolute gem of a professor. Her physiology classes and exams are designed to encourage you to critically think and apply information meaningfully. It was a challenging experience, but I was able to learn so much information from her. She's incredibly caring and always willing to help you understand concepts you are struggling with.
She is a good professor that tends to curve heavily. Concepts matter more than memorization so the homework and exams aren't as bad as other professors. She really tries to make sure you understand the material and holds a bunch of review sessions for exams. I will take her again!
She's very sweet, and she DOES CARE about the students. I don't know why other students say she doesn't. She spends time explaining things to you if you come to the office during hours and she is very detailed and precise with the lecture material. Yes, she's behind on lectures, but she won't test you on something she hasn't covered IN LECTURE.
She commands authority of the class material but that's the only good thing about her. The exams are unnecessarily difficult. They're just to prove that she's a genius in inventing questions. She expects you to answer the questions in a certain way and the IAs will make sure it's 100% exact. All free response answers... Are they though? Exams=85%
Catalina's lectures are very quick, be prepared to review material weekly if not daily. The lectures go into great detail and exams are usually reasonable; definitely answer exam questions in detail. Considering the amount of content that needs to be covered, Catalina and the IAs do a great job teaching.
Professor Reyes-Gonzalez is a very sweet and kind professor, but don't let that make you think the course is easy! Prepare for weekly timed assignments, and very difficult midterms and finals that are content-heavy. Also has extra office hours and QnA sessions for those confused about concepts or exams. Be sure to take one day a week to review!
The guideline to passing this class is to lecture review and apply that knowledge without looking back at it during your weekly assignments. I would advise you to plan around this class as it will take quite a bit of time to understand the material completely. I can sincerely say my work was not top notch and I got a B.
Catalina truly cares about her students and will adjust exams to prove it (i.e. make the final non-cumulative). I think she lectures in great detail but very clearly and will explain if questions are asked. Tests are HARD, you must study to do well. Overall, she encourages critical thinking over memorization so beware if you don't do well with that
Very nice & cares about the students, but lectures were not very easy to follow. She goes into extreme detail and does so very quickly, without explaining topics very well the first time. It doesn't help that she does not do "learning objectives" like most other bio Profs I've had, so you don't have a good idea of what to focus on for studying.
Catalina is a great professor and really cares about her students. I took BILD 2 with her and the class was very test heavy, we had 4 midterms and a final, and the exams were pretty difficult. She's really funny during lecture though and if you study well, you'll do good on the exams.
I really enjoyed taking her class. Her lectures are amazing and the exams are representative of what she says and teaches during lecture. Going to discussion sections or just rewatching them helped me massively. Rewatching lectures before exams also is helpful! She is caring and provides lots of opportunities to do well in her class.
Professor mostly lectured and slides were not sufficient to study off of. No learning objectives so it made studying more difficult. TAs really helped students, had to study a lot to get an A without the curve.
Catalina's lectures are very dense, but if you pay attention and keep up with the material the midterms are very doable. The final was very difficult, but the class was curved generously. She genuinely cares about her students and wants you to succeed. Not an easy class but she makes it manageable!
Prof Reyes-Gonzalez lectures a bit fast, and is information dense, but her exams are super fair (final was a bit hard). The curve is ENORMOUS which is good but honestly if you do the homework and pay attention in class/review a little at home, the exams should be mostly a cake walk. She cares so much about her students cannot recommend her enough.
The material was hard but Professor Catalina made it accessible and interesting. I might take BIPN 102 solely because I enjoyed her class. She's really passionate and knowledgable about her work and it's a pleasure being in her class.
it's very obvious she's knowledgable about the subject but the lectures are just too detailed. exams are straightforward, she provides a study guide, but again it's not clear how in depth we are expected to know the material
Lectures are very detailed and the class is very test heavy.
A good professor just a lot of studying and quizzes every week or sometimes every other week. Material is difficult but you just have to try and study and do your best. She does curve when it is needed. Make sure to study every slide for the exams.
Wonderful professor! Do not only memorize concepts but understand them, so always practice what you learn after the lecture! Attendance is mandatory but worth it. She is caring and understanding, so go to her office hours whenever possible, and your TAs want to help you succeed. Her grading system is quite lenient but don't take it for granted!
The lectures were very interesting and it was fun learning physiology. If you keep up with the material and make notes for every lecture, it makes the quizzes and exams very easy. There is flexibility in grading to try and get the students the best grade they can. Very conceptual class but loved it!
Overall a great professor who explain concept clearly and understandable even humorous sometimes. She arouse my interests in physiology. It's very joyful to take her lectures. All important concepts are listed on the slides. Attendance is required, textbook is optional. Now I'm taking BIPN102 with her again.
Came back a second time to Dr. Reyes's class for BIPN 102 a year after BIPN 100. Class is definitely much easier to comprehend the second time around. Assignments are assigned some weeks, the same way in BIPN 100. Not having discussion sections made this class slightly more difficult, especially because there's only one IA to help. Great class!
Catalina is a wonderful instructor. It's clear her expertise lies in physiology which she brings to her work in BILD 2. You will really learn how the body functions in this class and she will make it as attainable as possible. She is a generous grader, only assigns a small handful of homework assignments, and is an extremely patient lecturer.
BIPN classes are always going to be difficult bc there's a lot of information however, Catalina is a great lecturer and is understanding. As long as you do the bare minimum of note taking + doing assignments, there's no way you will fail the class. The exams seem difficult but it's all based on what she teaches in lectures + ur critical thinking.
She is super knowledgeable on human phys and it shows in her BILD lectures. She does a great job breaking down complicated concepts and provides very fair study guides for exams. I'd recommend sitting in the first few rows, she'll chat with you about random stuff and she's very kind and funny.
She really cares about the students and she is very sweet; it seems like she really knows the topics that she is teaching. However, I feel like her lectures are very heavy and boring. But for the midterms and final, she gives us a very detailed study guide
"She really cares about the students and she is very sweet; it seems like she really knows the topics that she is teaching. However, I feel like her lectures are very heavy and boring. But for the midterms and final, she gives us a very detailed study guide.
Professor Catalina is great! She is a very clear lecturer and tries her best to teach in a way that students can understand. She gives very clear study guides for the exams and her grade is curved! She is very sweet and is happy to answer any questions on confusion. Code is needed for participation.
She explained the topics clearly and her assignments were not so hard, bild2 content is hard but the final is not cumulative.
she is great. however, test is too hard. even the study guide does not help. really need to know wevertythign that is on the slides regardless of if it is on the studyguide or not. really making me sad because i really like her and that the final is just a diaster.
oh my god im getting a c in the calss. i did everything but that im sitll gertting a c. i am scared. i tried so hard but im still getting a c. i tried everything but i guess it is just a hard class. im getting a c. im done.
i love you professor thank you for curving my grade. would take your class again. you are amazing
I love Catalina! She's super funny and cares a lot about her students. She brings her dog to class sometimes too! She gave a super gracious curve for overall course grades. Definitely go to her office hours or her TAs; the course is super super dense but definitely doable!
She's very nice, but her accent was too heavy to understand, especially for BILD 2, which is heavy on anatomy and physiology terminology.
Caring professor. However, the lecture slides are narrow with only photos and her strong accent made it even harder to understand. There was little work to do in this class, so your grade depends on the 3 exams. The exams weren't difficult though since we had an extra hour to complete it.
3% discussion 9% for homework (some graded off accuracy and some graded off participation) 3% in class participation (poll at end of class no clicker) 25% for each of two midterms 35% final Loved Prof Reyes! She is very passionate and knows her stuff. Fast lecturer so be prepared to rewatch. Generous curve. Can attend any discussion. Take her!
Catalina is a great professor! BIPN 100 is a bit dense in itself, but she does a great job of covering the material and the grades are extremely fair based upon the material we learn. If you put in decent work and study the class notes, do the problem sets, and finish the HW on time you will excel under her mentorship. Great class, great professor.
The course itself is packed with info. SO HARD TO GET AN A THO. I thought I did well in the class overall (my midterm scores were ~20% above avg), but I still didn't get A :[ Class exam avgs were ~67% (even tho some students got above 100%!). TAKE APPLICATION QUESTIONS SERIOUSLY. Memorizing vocab+taking notes are bare minimum.
You will learn alot, but be ready to be graded severely. Remember in this class that your results are not your hard work! Good luck with Catalina!
I really liked Catalina, you can attend any discussion section you want and which lecture time works better for your schedule. Her midterms weren't easy by any means but if you put the work in you can succeed.
This class is hard but the professor is good. The exams are difficult but I still believe they are fair. Be ready to study a lot and pay attention to even the small details from class.
I adore this woman. This class was very difficult but she really cares and wants her students to do well. The material itself is very difficult to grasp but her teaching style does make it easier. She moves very very quickly through the material, and rewatching her lectures is very helpful. Attendance is mandatory for class as well as discussion.
Some people love her because she's funny and genuinely cares about her students; other people find her lectures unhelpful, dense, and unorganized. I understand both sentiments: if you care to seek out help, you'll learn a lot, but her lectures are not the best; she describes and tells without explaining much at all. Wonderful person, eh Prof.
She genuinely makes you work for your grade, this class took not even joking 20+ hours of studying a week, for me at least. The TA's are very specific graders, so make sure to read know the basics of almost every topic(50/50 free response and multiple choice. Physio is dense but Catalina tried her best since she seems pretty passionate about it.
amazing prof! but u MUST lock in. VERY dense material. 102 is basically 7weeks of respiratory system + 3weeks of digestive tract. SO MANY GRAPHS/DIAGRAMS for resp sys. do not get behind, lowk takes like 2hrs to rewatch a 50min lecture. ngl i didn't pay attention in discussion and i did fine(ish)... curves both the final grade + each exam a lil bit.
Professor Reyes is incredible! Her class was so interesting and I was excited to come to class every day. She knows the material so thoroughly and does a great job explaining concepts in a digestible way. If you're willing to put in the work, attend class, and study, you can ignore the lackluster reviews. She is so passionate and a great teacher.
Pay attention in class and you will do fine. Study for all midterms and you will do fine. I recommend rewatching the podcasts as she says a lot of information that can actually be useful for the tests. I received a B only because I didn't study for the final.
I would not recommend taking Catalina for BILD 2. Lectures are too fast & confusing, must rewatch them to understand all the material; not all of the info is on the slides. Midterms are difficult even if you study a lot. Lots of hypothetical questions. Study guide/ problem sets do not help prep you for exam. Must study every detail from lecture.
I really like her as a person, but not so much as a teacher. Her lectures are very fast-paced and are also confusing, because she teaches at a BIPN 100 level. A lot of the tests are hard to do well on, especially when you study for a long time. She does not provide a practice test so it is very hard to understand, and a lot of hypotheticals
Overall this class is one of the harder bio lower div classes, but she makes the process of learning all this material so much more complicated. The accent she has is not bad as other reviews say it is, but rather the speed at which she goes through content. Also the tests are hard and grading is unclear as the average on midterm 2 was a D.
tests reflected the material taught. lectures are mandatory (canvas quiz w code) but she gives a good amount of misses so you can still get full participation if you miss. exams were very self explanatory and curved. would definitely take this teacher again.
BILD 2 harder than most lower div bio courses. Easy to get behind, a lot of material to get through and go over. Professor is kind, and cares about her students. Attendance and discussion mandatory, all assignments are timed. Lecture heavy. If you study a lot you will do fine. 3 total exams, no cheat sheet.
Honestly she was good at lecturing and went over things in great detail. She answered any questions students had in class and she emphasized what she wanted us to know. However, exams were tough. They were application based meaning you had to understand the material, not just know it. Midterms were outside of class time and attendance was mandatory
very caring teacher and wants her students to succeed. the exams are pretty fair to everything she says in the lecture but they are still kinda difficult (however this isn't because of the teacher but more because of the content in BILD 2-- there's a lot). I would definitely recommend and take again
Professor Reyes is a funny, caring, and attentive professor. Her lectures are easy to follow and her teaching style is consistent, content is also very consistent with homework. Homework is required like every other week in canvas quiz format. Exams are easy if you spend an appropriate amount of studying. Which is not alot tbh. Overall 10/10 prof!
The professor herself is funny, charismatic and shows that she likes to teach. The issue here is the speed she teaches, discussion arent too helpful. Attendance to lecture and discussion is mandatory. Test are HARD even if you study like a pro. Final was rigged, but she curves VERY generously and wants you to pass, I wouldn't take again tho.
Amazing from week 1-7. Week 8-10 was rushed and not explained well. Final sucked even w/ the big curve. She is really passionate and cares but if you take this class, know that the end is the most difficult content to digest (no pun intended (bc its the digestive system lol))
Catalina is actually my favorite professor. She made me enjoy a hard topic and I would totally take her again. Yes the exams were hard and a major part of your final grade but once you get a hang of what she usually tests, it's not as bad as people say.
Her lectures are very content heavy but I would rewatch the weeks lectures week by week. The midterms are not as hard as people say, I never got below an A on an midterm and 108% on the final. You just need to review the material and ask questions! I would rewrite my notes, memorize, and do all discussion sheets before an exam and you will succeed.
My not so good grade came from procrastination. That doesn't mean this course isn't hard, because it is. A lot. But Prof Reyes is so passionate about the subject and does teach really well with quality lectures. Just make sure to never stop showing up. With this difficulty, and the need to have good numbers, she usually curves.
The best bio professor on campus, she is so knowledgeable and also has an amazing personality. Its bio so its gonna be a lot of trying to memorize but once you understand the bigger picture this class becomes fun. I wish all professors were like her.
W professor deserves a 4.0 or above Just actually do your part and its a breeze.
A very good a caring lecturer her lecture slides were clear and concise and typically had all the information you need. Her class consisted of two midterms and final however she would change how much they weigh based on if you did better on the midterms or final. Allowed 7 lecture skips and you only had to attend 6 discussions for full credit.
A lot of people were complaining, but I really liked her class. I came in super worried! For a lower division biology class, it is challenging, but it prepares you for upper div bio (she made me interested in physio). As long as you go to lectures, you will succeed! I would rewrite notes from the podcasts and try to understand the concepts
