She often thinks that it is her way or the highway... she doesn't realize that there is more than one way to counsel..... interesting teacher .....boring class
Assignments that are huge are not worth very much of final mark, which makes all the work seem pointless. Need more review, less lecturing. Gives a lot of information at once. Nice lady, but intimidating.
Zzzzzzzz
Hard marker. Assignments are unclear and not worth a lot yet the effort needed for assignments is great. a lot of make work projects. Class exercises are a must! as they are on exams. She takes her counselling too far when you go see her in her office. Recommend taking this course somewhere other than camosun as she is the only prof for it.
GREAT
Still in the class but her outlines are not clear at all what is wanted....i dont know yet if she is a hard marker but im sure others marks have a lot to do with the unclear outlines and expectations of what is wanted
I WILL NEVER TAKE A CLASS TAUGHT BY THIS WOMAN AGAIN. SHE IS INCREDIBLY COLD AND UNAPPROACHABLE. GOD HELP YOU IF YOU NEED AN EXTENSION. VERY HARD MARKER. TOO MUCH WORK FOR THE GRADE GIVEN ON ASSIGNMENTS. NEVER AGAIN.
Horrible marking system. Makes absolutely no sense and does not seemingly follow any logical path. Receiving .38 or 7.63 is not unheard of in her class. She laughs at everyone in a demeaning way and wonders why no one volunteers an answer.
HORRIBLE TEACHER/CLASS: Reasoning: She does not tell students what she expects (grade wise) and when asked in class how we will be graded she says "by writing strongly and referring to the counseling skills". She mocks/laughs at students and wonders why nobody speaks up. She is rude, arrogant, cold. AND us students pay her salary. Fire her!?
Speaks in a very condescending manner to students in class, with visible disdain for particular students which made it very uncomfortable to be in the class. The subject matter is interesting but she doesn't have the right type of personality to be interacting with others
Cate is amazing. She is very nice and open to hearing questions from students. She groups you up with fellow students in class to practice counselling skills as you learn them so it can be awkward but very helpful to practice so you know them. Tests are ok, they are tests, but if you study then you should be fine.
If you are looking for an easy class Cate is likely not the professor you want. She gives a lot of information But she basically tells you exactly what will be on the exams. Be prepared to read! If you are struggling you need to talk to her about it, straight up. She wont hold your hand. However if you own up to your situation she will respect that
Good teacher. Everything expected of you is on the course outline. Easy readings and only one group project, everything else is just easy quizzes and the tests. She prepares you well for what will be on the tests.
Cate isn't a hard teacher but I found her lectures to be VERY unstimulating. She also wasn't very clear when it came to our group project. I would suggest studying for those in class quizzes, she doesn't make up the questions and she doesn't choose easy questions either. I think she gets her slides, quizzes and tests from the textbook company.
Lectures are clear, but uninspiring. Although she asks for participation during class, her feedback can be very confusing and too critical. As a student with a disability, did not feel understood or supported.
If you are interested in the course material, you will have no problem. Lectures are enjoyable, with opportunities for questions, discussions, and stories at any point. The syllabus is clear with what is expected and when. Tests can be hard, just prepare, she will always tell you in class what is important. I enjoyed having this prof for 2 classes
Too much to know for the tests, it made studying very difficult. Expect 1-2 group projects almost every class!
Her lectures were interesting. If you attend she tells you exactly what is on the test and what slides to study. Her tests are fairly easy as long as you do the online quizzes and attend class.
Cate stresses professionalism, both in herself and in what she teaches about counselling. She wants students to learn key concepts and basic skills so that we will be equipped to "do no harm" in our counselling careers. If you are planning to be a counsellor this course is a must. I learned so much and she was very helpful when I needed support.
Cate is wonderful. So knowledgable. Always helpful, Clarifies. She also has a good sense of humour. She seems strict, and she marks very precisely based on what she has indicated is important for tests, but she is humble and wants you to really understand the basics of counselling. I just loved her as a prof.
Knows her stuff. Wants you to be the best empathic, ethical counsellor out there. And she's a lovely person. Just go talk with her every now and again, if you're truly interested in counselling. Really respect her.
Cate's got clinical experience and life experience making her a credible source of learning. Her tests are "hard" in that she looks for exact wording, even if you understand a concept. She is knowledgeable and professional. and has that wonderful laugh. I'm het, but I must acknowledge she is also easy on the eyes. No wanking, youngsters!!!
Paul Brady could certainly use her course. She will help you if you need help. Just don't approach her as a "poor me" victim. Be honest (within your comfort level) which she will absolutely respect, and ask her for the help you need. Remember: You are paying for your education. Ask for what you need.
I love Cate as an instructor. PSYC 256 changed my life and made me realize that I want to do counselling as a career. She is tough, but if you do the reading and put in the effort you are likely to succeed. Some people are meant to counsel and other are not - this will be reflected in your mark.
I enjoyed having Cate as my Instructor however she is a bit of a tough grader, she requires very specific, as in literally word for word answers, to get the grade on tests.
I urge anyone going into this class to consider a different prof. She's condescending, irritating and has no idea how to communicate - which is the subject of the class. Worst prof I've had. Marks seem completely randomly delegated. Believe the bad reviews - they're true.
Interesting assignments, very clear and easy to understand lectures, tough but fair. Won't put up with anyone's nonsense. She's probably the best teacher I've had so far and I'd recommend taking psych 154 with her even if you aren't a psych student. It was a really fun class!
Despite other reviews, I found Cate to have a very clear marking criteria . Psyc 154 was clearly oriented around the textbook .If you do your reading, come to class,do the quizzes and the labs you'll get a high grade. She does a lot of in class activities which is helpful to apply the knowledge and skills you've learned. I really enjoyed her class
Cate's 154 class was fairly easy, standard show up, read, and do the group activities and you wont have a problem. Her lectures are quite boring as they are the slide shows that the textbook provides. She ends class early 9/10 times.
Cate is the worst professor I've ever had. Avoid her like the plague. Judgemental, mean, homophobic, polyphobic, and close minded. I'm seriously sorry for anyone who has a mandatory class with her. Only accepts verbatim responses.
Cate is a very difficult professor. She is often unclear on what the exact answer is in class and can deviate from what she initially had stated as the answer. She is unapproachable, void of understanding and lacking any sense of humour. She's a hard grader.
Memorize the textbook and ignore her. She takes all her labs and exam questions from outside sources. Labs can be googled from two sources. Exams are direct quotes from the text only. Good luck if you can't memorize 100+ pages every two weeks.
Cates psychopathology class was like a taste of working as a clinical psychologist. Very interesting and such a change from other 1st/2nd year courses. The quizzes can be challenging unless you have read the chapter, attended class and reviewed the power points. If you do that you should be ok each week. Highly recommend this class.
Textbook used was hard to read (Essentials of Skilled Helping). I didn't really take a lot of time, therefore, to read it as I found that it was fully encapsulated in the course manual. I found her to be a bit rigid in her thinking, and somewhat judgmental. Lectures were fairly interesting.
Cates lectures a vague, not very inspiring. Criteria for labs also vague. When completing transcripts many people didn't know what to do as she isn't clear in her expectations. Lots of reading. Found it difficult to prepare for tests each week and then read the next chapter for the lecture - lots of reading. Tip- print powerpoint slides for class.
Cate is firm/blunt but fair. Makes expectations very clear from the beginning and is accessible by email for clarifications. I enjoyed the lectures, they involve a lot of activities and group collaborations that break up the slides. The course requires black and white answers, but psych is a bit of a grey area. Other than that, Cate's great.
Boring lectures and for me she was a really hard grader.
I would not take Psych with her again. very monotoned and not very helpful.
She was a hard grader. Midterm and quizzes can get tricky. Make sure you participate in the class as there will be marks for it.
Cate loves her long lectures. She uses a PowerPoint slide and makes sure to emphasize what she says will be on quizzes/midterm/final. That being said, she will ambush you on these tests. If youre not good at tests, avoid this course as 45% of your total grade is tests. Hilarious woman, friendly, reluctant to give full marks. Attend at your ownrisk
Cate is a rigid grader. The course involves a lot of memorization, hard work and showing up to class is a must. That being said, Cate is passionate about counseling and I feel that I gained a lot of practical experience in this class. She's tough because she knows the field and wants to foster a learning environment that produces strong counselors.
Cate is fun and isn't too hard on you, but you have to work hard and try to get the marks. She expects good work. Her grading was a bit vague and the criteria for the final paper wasn't very detailed. However, if you ask she'll clarify. Lots of little quizzes and papers, but they aren't too bad. I enjoyed Cate's class a lot!
Honestly one of the worst teachers ive ever had. She was not caring towards me or some of my other classmates at all. criteria on project a was unclear at times. Not that much homework, but the final grades in the course was made up from only 1 or 2 assignments. Did not care about the mental well being of some of the people in the class.
Good teacher. Some concepts were very abstract and there was a lot of reading that did seem to be of much use.
Cate is a very difficult prof. Her criteria is painfully vague yet her expectations are unreasonably high and will doc marks for 'errors' or 'missing criteria' that was not listed in the criteria, as if she just decided on the spot you should've done it anyways. She is unapproachable and unreasonable. Midterm did not properly reflect class content.
Cate Pelling is the most unreasonable/inflexible teacher I have encountered during my many years of school. She grades based off marking criteria that is extremely vague and she marks harshly and without fair justification. Despite having a doctor's note for a mental health issue (the very topic we're studying) she failed me for not presenting.
If you like structure, you will like Cate. She is highly organized and very clear in powerpoints, lectures and activities. I have taken 2 of her classes and truly learned so much. She is very firm though and has high expectations, intimidating at times. You really need to stay on top of things to get a good mark but well worth it!!
Cate's criteria are vague and she is unapproachable. Honestly this is the most frustrating prof I've dealt with. I find it hilariously ironic that the interpersonal skills teacher has few interpersonal skills and isn't very good at communicating. I hope she's a better counselor than she is a teacher.
She laughs when you say something that is incorrect and makes you feel stupid. Which isnt very nice. She is rude and enjoys to point out that we are wrong. She is a tough marker and doesnt mark fair. I have so many classmate who would agree. I am never taking this class again. I dont think shes the best instructor to be teaching this class. 0
Turn slides into notes before reading the textbook, then use any missed learning objectives to create study notes and added to the slide notes in more detail. I turned all the vocab into studycards and created flashcards for every concept. Memorize, review activities, do the quizzes, and you'll do well. I managed to get 95% but I worked hard for it
sympathetic prof. BUT boring. I ZZZ most of the classes
She has an issue with communication, we are on the third week of classes and so far there has been a miss communication on three major aspects of the course. She has blamed the students though none of the information we needed was anywhere to be found. If you can help it DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!
Why is this lady so unkind? She is so rude when someone asks a question during class as if its annoying to her.. I dont really think she cares about students but just wants to get through the content.
For a counselor I thought she would have been nice. I was wrong. She would make students uncomfortable to speak up in class as she would make you feel stupid for asking questions. Very cold and not helpful at all. Only one project in the class that is weighted heavily so if you screw up on it, good luck getting a good grade. I'm an A+ student too..
I had Cate for PSYC 154 as well. She can be tough grader and maintains a strong professional boundary with her students (some students claim she can be cold). But she is very organized (and will expect you to be too). I recommend attending all classes, studying your notes, and practicing your skills as much as you can.
mediocre prof. what she says doesn't always align with the textbook, she can be condescending and isn't very warm or friendly. the class itself was amazing and I loved the content, but felt frustrated with the prof many times. completely illiterate with technology and didn't transition to online due to covid well at all.
Each week consisted of reading and writing a discussion post. She barely interacts with her students and if youre okay teaching yourself then you should be fine taking a class with her. Did not transition to online due to covid well.
She reminds many students of Edna off of the incredibles. If she does not like your answer or question she will make it known she does not like it.
One of the worst experiences I had with a professor. While I can respect all instructors are different the sheer terror people feel when speaking up in class is a reflection of her talents as a teacher. If you ask for clarification or question what she has said she will dance around the answer and give you a half-constructed one through laughter.
With hard work motivation and commitment, I have successfully obtained a final grade of A+ However this was not without stress Pelling does not answer questions in class but sidelines them Also one very peculiar quality is Pelling farts during lectures and then says "What was that?" This was observed in few lectures
After reviewing our completed midterms as a class, I noticed she marked a question wrong on my midterm that was correct and when I went up to ask her about I was told quote: "I have 4 separate classes that I teach, I don't have time to look at each question that carefully. If I remember to change it I will, but it won't even change your mark."
Material is simple, lectures are dry. Cate can be abrasive and combative. Perhaps she is burnt out, there seems to be a lot of anger bubbling under the surface, a fragile ego. I read her reviews and figured I would give her a chance. I should have listened to the reviews. This is not someone who should teach interpersonal anything. Utterly dismal.
The subject matter is very interesting and I enjoyed the readings. If you work hard you will get a good mark. That said the way the prof interacts with the class in such a condescending and at times cruel way really makes you question the whole program. There are years worth of negative reviews on her teaching and yet they continue to employ her.
Cate Pelling, is a great professor. Her lectures are engaging the case studies give you something to look forward to every class. She doesn't show favoritism for the smarter students and gives everyone a fair opportunity. Id take any class she teaches.
if you can avoid taking a course with this professor, by all means do so. it's honestly depressing realizing that you have wasted money on a course taught by the most uninspired professor who does not know how to teach in the slightest. if you normally are a successful and engaged student, this course will suck the joy out of you. good luck lol.
AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS! Cate is one of the worst professors out there, she was not made to teach. Cate has a way of making you feel uncomfortable and terrible for answering or asking questions in class. I am typically a good student but she was tough, she also would gaslight others and myself in so many ways it is inexcusable and unprofessional.
Cate needs an advisor to show her how to be empathetic. She was not made for teaching and needs to retire. I would not recommend her if you want to protect your mental health.
Extremely hard marker. Provides a quality learning space for counselling, but her grade averages are below par so if you aren't at your best, your grades will feel the hit hard.
Pelling has some bad reviews on here, but I do not think she is as bad as they would lead you to believe. She is a tough marker and it is hard to get full marks. Sometimes the marks taken off are unclear. Case studies are challenging. She will not try to be your friend but that's just her teaching style. Work hard and you'll do well.
Just don't take any class with her unless you have to. This course is super interesting but her class was so boring and kinda useless. Also, she is such a tough grader and her grading criteria was not clear at all.
Cate is very unprofessional when it comes to handling students. She has made many students cry and is quite abrupt in her responses. Your answers have to be word for word what she would be thinking or it is wrong. This class was boring and also just made myself and others feel incompetent when we are typically good students. :(
Heyyyyy,I just want to say don't be scared by the comments here.Even I was also worried about it before i take her class. But she is so kind and friendly,in terms of the course content. She really listen and care about what we say and give great response. Idk her graded style yet.But if you want to learn and engage don't hesitate.
Cate is a harsh grader; it has to be word for word what she wants, or it's wrong. Old-school traditional teachers, pros and cons. The content is engaging. She knows the field; you will learn a lot. If you are super sensitive, she can be intimidating. She is not warm but more logical. Depends on what you value in an instructor.
Cate's reviews don't match my experience with her! I took 154 as an elective and found her class extremely easy to succeed in. Cate was caring, fair, and professional. I wouldn't be surprised if a single upset student is spamming negative reviews. She assigns more group work than I'd like but overall I found her to be a great prof. Underrated!
Knows her subjects well. Has little patience for people moving towards Psychology who she doesn't think will be a good fit there. Tough marker- she doesn't believe there's room for error when your profession has the mental and emotional health of another human at stake. Yes, shes a hardass, but honestly, respect. My lowest grade but learned ALOT.
One of the worst instructors I had at Camosun. She's so specific at what she wants in her assignments/midterm. If you don't write in your work what she says, you will lose marks. She's knowledgeable, but definitely someone who shouldn't teach students.
Believe all the negative comments written on this site about her. I went through this site and thought she couldnt be as bad as the reviews claim. She wasn't as bad. She was a lot worse. This lady has the uncanny ability of making students feel horrible about themselves.
genuinely no idea how someone with such a lack of interpersonal skills is teaching a course on interpersonal skills
I found Cate's class pretty interesting but mainly because of the material, she definetly isnt my favourite prof at camosun. But I wouldn't say she's bad. She's a fair grader, tells you what she wants and grades off many things not just midterms and exams.
Took 250 and 256. Some of the most memorable and useful classes I've ever taken. Definitely not boring! The weekly in-class activities in both classes taught me SO MUCH. Writing this a year after studying with her, as now I realize how rare it is to find this quality of instruction. Psychopathology (250) has been my fav course in my degree so far!
I really like Cate, she has tons of experience in the counselling field and in my opinion is a great teacher as well! The only times I've seen her be semi-rude is when students have blatantly tried to argue with her. If you have a passion for psychology and psychological disorders then I highly recommend taking Psych 250 with her. :)
She's a kind professor but was it hard to find out what she expected from you. She was unclear on criteria and doesn't give any sorts of rubric for her assignments. This means it will cost you marks to figure out what you need to do. It felt like the ball was entirely in her court when it came to grading. She does give review sheets for exams.
Cate is not a bad prof, but will she hold your hand either. In her class you will learn to think. Cat will not TELL you how to write a conceptualization but by god, you will learn to write one through trial and error. Take all the required psych classes first as the cumulative info will help. Labs are rough but she marked the final project decently
An extremely fair professor; she is very knowledgeable, and has a kind-heart. (You can tell, it's just under her tough exterior.) It's difficult to get full marks on the labs as her standards are high but if you love psychology and don't mind working hard for an A+ then go for it!
Myself and a lot of other classmates really enjoyed her class this summer :)
Absolutely awful instructor! She was very particular when it comes to what she's looking for; it's either her way or you lose marks. She wanted everything handed in hard copy only, no electronic submissions allowed, which she forgot to do for me specifically once, due to not being medically cleared to attend class the week an assignment was due.
If you are interested in Psychopathology and Case studies, i would recommend taking this course. She is very well informatic and knows what she talks about! i loved her lecture on exposure therapy. She is a tough grader. Participate in class, DO THE READINGS. and buy the DSM if needed.
Cate is extremely difficult to please, and she gives very unclear instructions. She expects you to understand what she wants without giving any specific guidelines, and then gets passive aggressive when you don't do it “the way she wanted”. The course material itself is very interesting, but she herself is a very poor professor.
Cate is super unwilling to explain her expectations clearly, and it makes it really hard to get good grades because you don't understand what she's looking for. She is also quite rude, and only cares about a select few in her class. She also talks way too fast to be able to take notes properly.
The class was very difficult as she never lectured and only read off of the presenation slides. The in-class activities are her way of psycho-analyzing her students.
Overall the class was not hard. Cate tends to make students feel bad when they answer the questions wrong or try and correct her. She isn't very approachable, when you talk to her often she laughs awkwardly if she is about to correct you about something. She doesn't give clear answers to questions and if asked to clarify she'll make you feel dumb.
1st prof to make me cry, asked for outline of whats wanted for our final paper said we already discussed twice didn't give proper answer back, rewrote my research paper cuz she wanted improper one like WHAT. Always said WHEN I WAS IN THE FIELD, amt of times she'd awkwardly laugh about patients disorders or just in general don't think she ever was
The course material wasn't so difficult itself. But I don't think Cate was made for teaching. She has a way of making you feel hesitant to ask or answer anything. During feedback, she always went on about how our assignments weren't “specific enough” YET she hardly gave criteria! I haven't had any other profs like that. She is retiring soon though.
I found this instructor off putting as she seemed to be quite critical and dismissive of questions in class. Not very accessible. However I joined the content and all the group projects/ discussions. Clearly knows the material in and out. Average market, not super homework heavy, somewhat unclear feedback.
Cate does not clearly communicate her expectations or even basic information about the assignments. When you ask for clarification, she is super passive-aggressive and sometimes mean. She has a way of making students feel terrified to ask or answer questions in class. Her marking is harsh, and her feedback is vague. This class made me hate my life
