a great teacher all-in-all. sure, she has an accent when she talks, but her class is easy! gives extra credit every monday, and helps when u cant do ur homework assigns. recommended! oh but a warning, her lectures may be boring to some as she tends to use podcasts at times
shes the freshest:3
shes the freshest:3
i took both 100&100L for this class and it was literally the easiest class i have ever taken. if you have literally any experience in computers at all and knew how to edit Myspace back in 6th grade you will not need to even attend but she does give extra credit on every monday. just google every answer and i reconmend not buying the book, notworthit
Took Intro to Computer Science with her and got the easiest A of my life. Attendence is not madatory every day. She gave out tons of free extra credit the first few weeks, so much that I didn't need to do final or all assignments and still got an A. Tests were online and plenty of time to get all the answers right. Again easiest A out there!
Best computer science teacher I've had. She is helpful and knows how to explain things (most of the time). she helps students individually if they need help.
Mrs. P is the best COMSC teacher I've ever had! She explains things clearly, provides lots of examples of code. She helps you when you are stuck with your program. Class is fun. She gives extra credit. She is a wonderful teacher! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
She's really not a good teacher. She's an incredibly easy grader and doesn't care if you go to class though.
In my opinion she is one of the best COMSC teachers at DVC. She cares about students and tries to make sure you understand the material. She would return your assignment back to you if you miss something and if you fix it on time she will credit you for that. Also, i like how helpful she really is.
Very helpful, caring, and straightforward. Always makes sure her students understand. Do labs to help with assignment. If assignment isn't correct, she helps you in order to get full credit. Midterm and final are reviwed and easy. Online quizzes with no deadline. Highly recommended!!!!
What you get out of the class is what you put into it. She know her stuff and really cares about her students. She is more than willing to help her students with the assignments and if you want an A, it's not out of reach.
Definitely an easy A! Some assignments are kind of challenging, but she is always ready to help. Fast lecturer, textbooks are useless. If you study and understand from the review that she gave, midterm and exam are not problems. She is also really kind.
She is one of the kindest teachers i have had. She is very helpful and if you do all the assignments and quizzes you end up getting an easy 'A'.... If you get stuck in any part of assignment she will always help you to finish it.
She is an OKAY professor. She accepts late work as a full credit. She shows caring and willingness to help any students. Midterm and final exam are tough.
She is definitely one of the greatest teacher ever!!! I took her this semester, just do all the homeworks and quizes and you will do fine, grading are 30% Assignments, 15% quizes, 25% Midterm, and 30% Final. Make sure you want to keep track of your scores, because on webct there are only points, and again, grading are not based on those points, but%
Teacher is nice tho I just met her in final. Accepts late homeworks, and gives a lot of hints and extra credit points. Exams are tricky multiple choice, but if you study very carefully the review materials, you will be fine. Beware: students actually think multiple choice type of questions are easy, but they are room to more errors. I got an A tho!
She is a nice teacher. She is very patience and kind to every students in the class. She accepts late homework and she gives power points for every chapter, so you don't need to read textbook. She always helps you on the assignment when you asked her. Highly recommend teacher!
Miss P is an amazing teacher! I took this class online and do not have any programming experience so was very nervous about it. Miss P was always quick to respond to questions, amazing at pointing me in the right direction with my code without giving away the answer, and overall a great teacher. Highly recommend!
One of the kindest teachers you will ever meet. If you do not understand something, then she will work with you one on one until you understand. If you put in even a little effort to study, you will do well in this class. The concepts are made very clear, and are even posted online.
I feel like I rather have a in-person lecture than reading off powerpoints, or at least a lecture-video. She doesn't really teach and I have had a few trouble understanding assembly.
She's one of the nicest teachers I've ever had. She takes time to make sure everyone understands and even though she hasn't taught assembly language in some time, she still taught it well and I learned a lot. The hw was actually fun to do, and the tests were easy since they were in class and all online multiple choice and you could have a notecard.
This is the worst teacher I had in DVC. She didn't care students' name and that's cool with me, but even though I sent her a polite e-mail including my name, she replied to me with mistaken name.
One of the kindest professor I've ever had.... Incredibly easy grader!! Really supportive and caring. But her lectures might be boring and teach kinda unclearly... but she will always help you . 3 out of 10 quizzes dropped, gave 10 extra points for midterm for free if the class has 8 or so F's...
This teacher is really a very kind person and she makes me relaxed in class. Sometimes the lectures are longer but the teacher has her ways to keep the class interesting. She curves the Midterm and lets you submit assignments later if you have a valid reason. I recommend her.
The professor is really kind. Just show up in class, put in a little effort, and get an A. Take her if you want an easy A professor. The lecture could be boring but she is really helpful and will work with you if you ask.
This class is great. Many in class examples that go along with the lectures, making you get involved so you really understand C++. Most helpful teacher and understands the struggles students havego through.
Professor is extremely good, for comsc 110 she is a great teacher i would take again for 165 but she isnt teaching it in the spring. If you can take her take her! she is there to help you with lab assignments and help you with anything midterm final are easy as long as you understand the concept. One of the GREATEST teachers i ever had . MVP
She really cares about her students, she's kind and she'll be there for you if she sees you putting in an effort. Sometimes the lecture isn't as clear as I'd want it to be, but programming is like learning a foreign language. If you practice enough, concepts become clearer later on. Do your homework and ask questions by email.
Professor Pentcheva is an amazing Professor! Her lectures are clear and very helpful. She gives assignments that are very clear to do and if you don't understand how to do it, she will respond very quickly to help you. Would recommend Professor Pentcheva to all Computer Science students!
Dr. Pentcheva was the sweetest professor that I have ever taken. She is always ready to help you in class, lab, and even through the e-mail. What you need to do is to fall in love with computer science with her. Even though she has strong accent, you can still understand the lecture. Take her class ! I can guarantee that you will love the class.
She is great!!!! She can explain everything clearly. Finish your homework and you will be fine.
She is a sweetheart
She's a great professor with the goal of helping you understand comsc. Very helpful! Midterm and final are easy, go over study guide and you're ready to go. Always in a good mood. Overall, good class.
She's an extremely nice lady and really cares for her students success. She says that she deducts points for late homework, but never actually does it. If you are new to programming she is a good teacher and is very helpful when you can't solve a problem. Just be sure to follow her study guides thoroughly because her tests are lengthy and hard.
Good class. Everything she uses is also online and powerpoints borrow heavily from book. Weekly quizzes. Usually she ends class right as the lab is beginning, and you can stay for extra help if you need it.
Ms. Pentcheva is the sweetest teacher ever. She has a strong accent but don't let that deter you from taking her. She is extremely helpful and if you ask her a question, she will not stop explaining until she is sure you understand it. She helps you a lot with the homework, and gives a lot of extra credit. Only one midterm and a final. Take her!
She is great!! She is really aware of the class's skill level and knowledge so she knows how to explain everything. There is an assignment and a quiz at the end of each chapter but as long as you pay attention to her slides its fine. she is always willing to answer question and replies to emails very quickly Really prepares you for midterms/finals
She is very passionate about her job and will do her best to accommodate students who are needing extra help. She is generous with extra credit. I have turned in assignments late and she has yet to give me penalty for it. She also gives excellent study guides for her exams (a fun jeopardy game) that she posts onto D2L. Take her!
Caterina Pentcheva was a great teacher. She was a little unclear at times in lecture, and would sometimes make mistakes while programming, but she would always correct herself. She always gave help with the homework, even did some assignments in class, always gave quick responses. Easy midterm, but final was a bit hard! Overall, she's amazing.
Take this class online, in person is actually fairly hard from what I've heard. She's very unclear with her directions/announcements/class organization if you take it in person. Take the class online. It's easy, homework is fair, quizzes are fair, tests will be online multiple choice - easy. Final is easy. You'll do well in the online class.
I took Pentcheva 110 online class and the review from 12/15/15 is completely inaccurate. We did zero face to face interaction with the instructor . I had to do a lot of work on my own to complete the course. Online 110 course is not easier than f2f. If you got a bad grade, bashing on the instructor and posting revenge review is not helpful.
This online class was incredibly easy. Majority of her quiz, midterm, and final questions were searchable on Google. She drops 3 of your lowest quiz scores, which doesn't make a difference since its so easy to get above 90%. If you are a CS major, Pentcheva will not prepare you for future CS courses. If you are not, this class is an easy A.
Assembly Language is hard as it is but pentcheva makes it great. Everything in class including lectures, labs and exams. Quizzes online at home. Before exams she gives you jeopardy games which has about 80% of all questions. Study them and study her power points and you're pretty much guaranteed an A. Highly recommend her for all COMSC classes.
Tough assignments, tough quizzes and exams but very fair if you read the material and ask for help. She is always available through email. Would take again in a heartbeat.
I have taken her for 3 semesters. For CS165, CS200 and CS260. I think she is the best CS professor in DVC. She always stops and explains over and over if you say you didn't get it. She uses hilarious examples.
Don't take this teacher for online class. The teacher is not responsible for your learning. I sent her email for asking question about assignments, but she didn't reply anything for it. And she has lots of mistakes on the questions of her exams.
I enjoy hard work so I like this class. Be prepared to send at least 20 hours per week on the class. I thought it was worth it. She is a good teacher and I learned plenty.
Took her online and was hard to reach her when trying to ask questions. Felt it'd been better if been it'd been live lecture instead of reading online material.
Took her in person data structures class. Very thorough lectures, helpful in class and outside class. Homework really drills down the topic and isn't just busy work. Clearly cares a lot about her students
It's better to take her face-to-face class rather than online class because it's the only way to reach her. Tests and homework are easy, since they're all on her given ppt. And her ppts and materials she gave are awesome.
DO NOT TAKE HER ONLINE CLASS! Omg her online class is so difficult. Take another professor and in person. The quizzes and test were so difficult and she is unresponsive. She does not teach and you are pretty much on your own. I am an A student and I will never take one of her classes again. You have been warned. Messed up my GPA.
She provides no help for her students. But she says she does. She can not make her program works but will ask you to provide the most difficult programs. She will make you dislike computer science. AVOID HER CLASS AT ALL COST
She is unorganized and her in class example programs seem to never work. Hard to understand.
She expects other teachers to have taught you everything. She is too busy to even try to help you. She just says read the book. Well thank you for that, next time I will not ask a question. Worse experience with a CS teacher ever.
she is one of the best professors i have taken for coding. if you study everything you will get a good grade. not as bad as these comments make it out to be.
Assembly in itself is hard, but you need to put in the work to get something back. She was a good teacher and had everything nicely outlined. Would take again
I feel like the ones who wrote bad rewiews were a bunch of lazy people who expect everything to be handed to them. This is college not high school. The proffessor has everything outlined for you and if you do all the work and study you will most certainly pass. Take her.
She is a good professor and will teach you a lot about assembly. The class it sort of do it yourself which is better for me because it lets me put in the work. Easy class
As of writing, a class with this teacher is extremely easy. Her exams are all from the material on her PowerPoint slides, and there were "free" extra credit opportunities. I didn't even have to do one assignment. However, especially during the COVID-19 situation, I can't say this is a class where I absorbed the material well. Wait for in person.
The professor is nice and caring, but her exam is awful. The questions focus on trivial things about C++ but nothing about the essense. What's worse, the exam is full of errors and typos and the professor never gave back the results. Be ready for getting bad scores without knowing why.
Pentcheva gives good feedback on homework and was extremely easy virtually as she was super lax on deadlines and had really easy tests that were basically copied from the readings. She also allowed retakes on homework and gave tutorials on some assignments. Would not take if you actually want to learn the content though.
She is trying her best to help her students. Sill, you need to learn most of the thing on your own. Finish all the quizzes and assignments means you already get an A.
I took her for Summer 2021 COMSC-165 asyncronously. It was fine, but I didn't "really learn" as much as I wish I could've from her lectures and readings. Seemed more lazy than not, having us take screenshots of our output, and put our code along with the screenshots into a Word document. Take for a relatively easy A if you want.
Not a bad teacher by all means. However, she does not do a lot of actual teaching. The online classes have no lectures, she only assigns reading and homework, gives you a slideshow that is a review of the reading, besides that you're on your own kid. I wish there was lecture, but I watched videos on youtube about the topics and it worked for me.
Good professor, less homework, sometimes even I forgot I had a cs class. But I hope more video lectures, not just reading textbook
Didn't do much teaching, honestly it seems like she doesn't understand the stuff she is showing us. The class is entirely online, and pretty much everything is from either the textbook or youtube videos she links made by other people. You'll probably learn the material, but with little input from her.
Very very average teacher. Never gives you full credit for assignments only because your program didn't meet one of her expectations. She gives You a chance to resubmit though but most of the assignments are time-consuming and are useless if you are good at coding. You also will have a quiz almost every week and a mid-term and a final.
Took 3 of her courses back in 2015. Graduated in 2017 and she was my favorite professor of all time in DVC. Just wanted to drop a very late review since I noticed the latest reviews don't do her much justice. Maybe things might be different online classes but in-person she was lovely and caring whenever you asked her questions about the topic.
Great professor. Had her for summer 23. She cares about her students but unfortunately you have to learn from the book, not the professor as there are no recorded lectures or classes.
Good for summer session. midterm and final is 50 percent combined with study guide. self taught with ppt/yt. Just use google. Assignments aren't tuff and she gives ex. code sometimes. weekly multiple choice quizzes that are hard to read. No repeat.Clear requirements on HW. ez pass but I want to learn more. use cpp reference and w3school and YT.
Prepare for the tests. Don't make the same mistake I did and take this course in the summer. I barely learned anything because of it. Despite those difficult times, Pentcheva was still an excellent professor. The presentations she provided were useful, so please take note of that and read through EVERYTHING. Practice some extra questions as well.
This class is a fairly easy A, especially if you already know a decent bit of C++. The assignments are good, not needlessly long or difficult, simply testing the required material. I will warn that the final is significantly harder than the quizzes! Make sure to give yourself a grade buffer going into the final.
Not a very hard course to take, she shows you what to do (in the tutorials), and if you have any bugs with the code, then that's on you to figure out. But even that isn't difficult to fix, so long as you read the textbook.
Very chill prof. Complete weekly modules: quiz, assignment, write a paragraph about what you learned. The assignments are not hard at all, and she accepts late credit. She will give examples of what to do as well. She is ESL, so expect grammar mistakes. Grades within a day or 2 after due date.
If I could give her a 10/10 I would. She's an amazing teacher. Even though its an online class, she's very attentive and explains the material well if you are confused on it. I really enjoyed this class and would definitely take another course with her in the future.
Great professor, great class. Highly recommend.
Prof P is a really nice person. But I WON'T take this class again, you will learn nothing from it. If you have good foundations on programming, you can take it, and you will be relax. But if you are a rookie, don't take this if you want to learn something.
She is very old and should quit teaching. Very tough grader. No communication. If you need help with an assignment and ask questions, she wont respond or give you feedback. I would never take her again.
Assignment, discussion, quiz every week. Very little communication and course feels not engaging at all. You won't learn much but she's lenient on grading assignments and discussions. Would not recommend if you want to learn the material.
Easy class but lowkey you won't learn anything. She gives you tutorials on how to do assignments that are too tempting to copy line for line. Even if you submit the exact same code she gives you full credit. Do not take it if you're trying to learn.
I ahad professor Caternia Pentcheva FA24 and she is a very good comp sci professor. She has great, detailed lectures and handles office hours very well. She is very funny and has great advice in this field. The workload is just like every other comp sci class, so there's really nothing to complain about. Take her if you can.
She's a great professor if you're looking for a free pass in her assembly class, but if you want to understand assembly, do not take this class. She HEAVILY relies on the textbook for exam/quiz material, but for the weekly programming projects, she posts video tutorials. Take this class if you have other heavier classes to take at the same time.
Not a good professor at all, please take someone else, too much workload, way too many quizzes, which are 15 minutes at no retakes
Doesn't teach very well but is an easy A if that's what you want
