wr150 writing and research on war...amazing class he is so interesting,GREAT GUY
Writing on war, Excellent class. Somewhat easy grader, very knowledgable, personable. Downside - he rambles so dont talk to him after class if you have another directly after his.
awesome guy. very vocal and opinionated. insanely knowledgable. you will learn a lot in his class.
Great class. He did a good job of keeping interest, dropping a subject when he saw we were getting bored with it.
Awesome teacher. Very knowledgable . . . sometimes too knowledgable, likes to ramble. Fair and easy grader. Great guy, go to office hours.
Great class and really great teacher.
Writing and Research on War. BRILLIANT! Hysterical, jolly Canadian guy who loves sharing his opinion. His knowledge of the material is only matched by his passion for it. Go to office hours; you'll feel like a sponge, taking in everything he says to you.
Snoozefest......
Professor Nolan is excellent. He grades fairly and treats his students with a level of intellectual respect that is hard to find with other professors.
goes above and beyond the call of duty. there should be more professors like him
He's too fun. Even if you hate war and blood, the class is still interesting. Awesome guy, talks and talks...
I wish more professors had Nolan's passion for their field. He loves history and loves teaching it. Go to office hours, you will learn so much more from him there, but don't expect to get out quickly, he loves to talk. He cares about his students dearly and grades accordingly. Take his classes!
Great professor. One of the best at BU, hands down. Don't forget to go to office hours, he's a great conversationalist and goes further into depth on the material.
this guy singlehandedly made me want to add a history minor along with my science majors. he's the kind of guy you go to when you want to learn about any history
I'm in complete agreement with the reviewers below. Nolan is a GREAT teacher, great conversationalist - very helpful and very fair. I loved his class and added an HI minor to my degree basically because of him.
This semester I took 5 classes, 2 grad-level. I worked 20+hours/week. I couldnt handle the work so I went to talk to Nolan about dropping the course & instead of just letting me drop he worked out a schedule w/me so that I could still stay in the class & not kill myself from stress. He is an amazing professor and a great guy. Best HI prof I've had!
Hands down the best professor at BU and the reason I am a history major. More passion for and understanding of history than anyone I have met. He does talk alot and rather quickly but everything he says is incredibly interesting. If you only take one HI class at BU, take one with Nolan, you will not regret it. Oh, and you can ignore the readings.
Nolan is by far one of the best professors I have ever had. His knowledge of history is impressive and makes me wish I had more time at BU to take his other classes. I strongly recommend any class with him-he puts his heart and soul into the lectures. I guarantee you will walk away loving history, even if you start off hating it.
Professor Nolan provides analyses, not just facts, that are interesting. You will leave this class smarter. Also, readings are heavy and often, but, in my opinion anyway, not always necessary. Using the books as a reference and your notes as a guide is the best way to study. Exams provide a lot of choice.
Such a great guy. Not only did I love his class, but at the end he screwed up my grade (gave me much lower than I had earned) and when I emailed him about it, changed it no questions asked. Its not a hard class and you watch a lot of movies. Who could ask for a better class?
Amazing professor. Great speaker and can make ANY topic interesting. Unfortunately was only unable to take one class with him but it was the best class in college. By far the most passionate speaker and knows his stuff. Nolan is da man!
This class should be required for history majors. Don't be dismayed by the reading, you don't have to go too in depth. Just go to lectures (they are amazing), write one paper comparing too history books of your choice, and take two tests. I would have been willing to do a lot more work just to hear him lecture. Take it.
it is rare that you find a professor nowadays (especially at BU) who is so charismatically intelligent, sans any pretension whatsoever. professor nolan is not only inspiring in his vast knowledge and eloquence, but in his genuine character and conduct towards students.
This man is a genius, I come away from class everyday inspired. I feel privileged to be lectured by him. Reading seems intimidating, but if you go to class that's really all that matters. I will at least minor in history because of this class. This man has changed my life.
If you don't take this professor when you have the opportunity, you are an idiot. I had a him for a 9:30 class, woke up for it every time because I enjoyed the lectures so much. Got average grades, but who cares? I learned a ton and the lectures were phenomenal. Take him.
His lectures were extremely interesting and kept focus well. He knew an awesome amount on his subject and was extremely helpful.
Rarely do I come across a professor who oozes so much passion for the subject he teaches and is so interested in instilling that same feeling in students. It's so easy for history to be a tedious subject, yet Nolan turns it into the total opposite of that. He's fantastic.
The WR150 section doubles as a history class; Nolan is extremely knowledgeable about different wars. He's not very helpful through emails but gives honest opinions in person. He's also pretty obvious as to who are his favorites in class but is a fair grader with tons of helpful comments. Easy to get a B+ or A in.
He's brilliant and friendly, and extremely eager to share his knowledge, although he can be somewhat brusque about non-academic matters. He doesn't shy away from the brutal and difficult aspects of war, and thus totally changed my view of it. Take this class!
I wouldn't take his class again. He's very smart and willing to help but also very opinionated and can really screw you over if you get on his bad side.
quite possibly the best class I've taken at BU. He makes history interesting and the class is enjoyable. I never missed a class even though it required me to get up early. He is extremely friendly and easy to talk to. Office hours are enjoyable and it is refreshing to know that a professor actually takes time to speak with his students
awesome prof! he's honest, smart, and really loves what he's talking about. i'm so glad i took a course with him... im thinking of changing my major to history. and yea, go to office hours. he loves to chat and can really help you out
great teacher. makes some funny quips during class that keep the lecture lively. Its the only 90 minute class that I've stayed awake and attentive in for the whole class. Two tests and a paper. Reading is necessary, especially for the final since everything is based off of the reading.
Professor Nolan is easily the best professor i've had thus far at BU. Tests aren't difficult, just do the reading (which can seem overwhelming but isn't that bad) and you will do well.
Not a fun class. He talks and talks, frequently going off on irrelevant anecdotes. The contents bespeak of a subtext of American grandeur a la Roosevelt's big stick, and human rights as a mere afterthought. I also went to his office hours, and once he realized that I am not a history major Prof. Nolan brushed me off in a disrespectful way.
It's a great class. He is engaging and his lectures are interesting. His grading is very fair and he will even meet with you if you do not agree with his grading to review and possibly change the grade. can be very helpful. Read what the syllabus says and it's an easy A- or better
none too impressive. Plays the Irish/canada/human rights cards a lot. Very thin skinned about criticism. Does not like being confronted and has a bad temper. Contents predictable and rarely analytical.
Excellent professor. Very clear, and incredibly knowledgeable. Tons of reading, but if you just comming to putting in some serious hours, you'll find all the assignments to be real fair. Every lecture was lively and exceedingly interesting. If you pay attention, the class goes by quickly and you won't want to miss a single one.
I suffered in this class a lot. Professor talks a lot about what he knows and about his experience, less about what is important to us. I found the assignments hard and not interesting.
Great man, great class. LOTS of reading, but the lectures are amazing. Best professor I've had in four years at BU. I look forward to every class; I get there early to get a good seat. That's how good it is.
Amazing Professor who shows a lot of interest in the subject. A lot of reading but it doesn't have to be done if you attend lectures. He let's you write a paper on anything you want. Was my first history class and I had a great time with a good grade.
A great professor. Very engaging lectures and clearly knowledgeable. Like other have said, if you do the reading you will do well. You don't have to go to every lecture if you have friends that you can split notes with, but if you're interested in history, you won't want to miss them anyway.
Professor Nolan's lectures capture your attention and firmly hold it for the well-spent hour and twenty minutes of class. He is passionate and articulate; during office hours he is more than willing to explain assigned readings if you have questions. The course reading is heavy, and the paper is graded strictly, but he is a wonderful professor.
awesome professor/class. tons of reading but i literally did not do any of it and still pulled off a good grade. go to lectures and understand concepts and you should be fine.
This class never ends. He talks a lot. The readings are cumbersome and numerous. Waste of time.
Skip this class if you can. He is aggressive and a poor communicator. Grading is unclear. Assignments are over the top.
Worse experience in history classes. As a major, I was used to highly informative, worldly, pleasant lectures. Nolan is exactly the opposite.
Now that I am in law school away from Boston, I can really see what a terrible experience Nolan was every day. He is very opinionated, does not accept any challenges, and wants to be taken seriously without the intellectual substance required. Avoid him.
Hard course, little rewards. He has his favorites, and he talks a lot. Assignments are difficult. He treats undergraduates like ....
Low returns in thi class. Not interesting, little respect of students, hard assignments.
Glorified book club. If you have nothing better to do but read 170 pages a week on British Infantry tactics and whatnot, take this class. Otherwise... don't
Tough professor. Not helpful. Very insecure. Class boring.
Best professor I've had at BU. Passionate, extraordinarily knowledgeable, personable. His lectures are fantastic though he doesn't require attendance, and I did no reading outside of the day before the midterm and final and I got an A-.
Took this class over the summer. One of the most enjoyable lectures i've ever had, and it was 2 and a half hours long. So knowledgeable and passionate, funny and opinionated, overall interesting, the textbooks were unnecessary and the book review papers were basically the whole grade. amazing class.
Honestly I can't give this guy a high enough rating. I always skip a handful of classes every semester and couldn't care less... I missed one of Nolan's lectures and I was upset. He is the greatest. His lectures are epic and he makes you actually care about what you're learning. I would take four classes with him every semester if I could.
And to wrap up, HI307 was NOT a difficult class. I don't really do school. I don't read much or study much, and that's the truth. I looked over my lecture notes the night before both the midterm and final, read my two (choose-your-own) books for the papers, and got an A-. I honestly wish I could take this class again. Nolan is such a boss.
I was a little intimidated about taking his class at first, but I'm so glad that I did. His lectures are interesting, engaging, and just brilliant. I'm so glad I took this class. I've learned so much from him.
Prepare to learn more about war than you ever wanted to know. Nolan goes incredibly in depth about war, especially the gore of it. You watch a lot of gore and listen to his gory stories. I did NOT read any books, but got an A-. Only 4 grades (3 essays and 25% is attendance). Overall though, it's awesome and is perfect to fulfill that WR150.
I took History of War with Nolan last fall. I'm sure it would be very interesting for someone who didn't know much about warfare going in... But I did, and I found it boring and generalized. Nolan is pompous and his lectures often seem driven by emotion/pathos rather than by fact. Not the type of history I'm used to. It was an easy class, though.
I had no interest in taking this class & day 1 totally scared me…as did day 2,3,4,and 5. But then I realized how awesome Nolan is and how helpful he is (go to office hours!). He's totally understanding of most things. I had no knowledge of war and really helped me set a pace to learn more. The papers aren't hard & books aren't necessary.
I loved this class, Nolan is great. Comes off as arrogant and unwilling to listen to students, but if you push your way in there, he's totally not like that. Funny lectures with lots of information and if you're into WW2 you will love him! He knows a lot. Assigns book reviews and too much reading, but is very helpful at office hours. DONT skip.
Definitely the best history professor in BU. Great accent and great personality, his class is always interesting. Be prepared to read A LOT OF texts if you're not familiar with the topic, and I don't recommend people who know little about the military history to take his advanced courses.
Professor Nolan is incredibly knowledgeable when it comes to the history of warfare. It's also clear that he's incredibly passionate about what he teaches. Lectures and discussions are entertaining, full of tangents, overall you come out of the class with a fantastic understanding of each era of history that you study. Great professor, great class.
Professor Nolan knows a lot about what he is teaching and it shows. His lectures are prewritten but nevertheless very engaging. He's very open to questions but has a tendency to not actually answer the question you ask; however you will learn something. Overall a very interesting professor worth a couple visits to office hours.
Nolan's lectures are by far the most entertaining I have attended at BU; His passion for the subject matter he teaches is plainly visible. The assignments are quite long, but the reading are interesting and entertaining, and it's the only class I have that I would be genuinely dissapointed to skip, even on a nice day.
Professor Nolan is the best lecturer I have ever had. Class with him is like listening to the most amazing audio book. Attendance is not mandatory and tests are mostly on readings, but I would not miss his lectures. The TF grades, but he is more than willing to evaluate the fairness of grades. Cannot recommend enough!!!
Professor Nolan is one of the best lecturers Ive ever had. Hes very intelligent, but doesnt rub it in your face. Many times I just liked talking to him about history because it is interesting, not necessarily for the class. On top of that, he was very informative and helpful in office hours. Would highly recommend!
He is a really great professor. He's passionate about the history he teaches and you will not regret taking his class.
He's a real gem and offers a unique perspective on World War 2. Often times he will go off on an unrelated rant but they're always interesting nonetheless. Participation matters but its easy to participate. I wouldn't recommend this class to someone who doesn't know much about World War 2 (though its still possible to do well with little knowledge)
Two book reviews: 60% of your grade / One final exam in person w/ blue book. I freaked out over the exam because I didnt do the readings, but I focused on 3-4 topics and really got them down, ended with an A in the class. His lectures are worth taking the class for. Really pay attention to what hes saying and itll be a class you wont regret!
Really great professor. Uses humor in lectures to keep students engaged. Although there is a lot of reading, the books are very interesting. The final exam is relatively simple, and one part is based on the books you read.
Prof. Nolan is a walking encyclopedia about the history of war, and his lectures are incredibly engaging. Basically, just sit down, relax, and absorb whatever he chooses to talk about that day. He rambles a lot and isn't great at directly answering questions, but you'll always be learning something cool, especially if you also go to office hours.
Nolan is genuinely the funniest prof I've ever encountered. IR300 (modern war) was a super interesting class. He assigns three different books, but you really don't have to read a word of it. Workload is super light. Just going to classes and taking notes is all you need. You won't want to miss his lectures.
Terrible professor. Wrote previous evaluation himself as they are the opposite of who this mess of a man really is in class. Does not know his stuff. Gruff. Impersonable. Nasty to criticism. Avoid this awful guy.
Avoid him. Gave me the worse grade in my for years. Course is boring, tough, disorganized. This pseudo-intellectual does not know how to lecture. He has Napoleon complex and a huge chip on his small shoulder/.. Grading is tough and subjective. Criticize this belligerent, conservative, self-righteous little man? Severe punishment will follow...
He knows everything. Nice professor, chill class. Office hour can be really helpful.
This prof needs to join the modern world. He can't use the projectors in class but refuses to call classroom support/IT. Rants and raves about terrible IT support. How can they help you when you refuse to contact them? Such a strict grader. Treats students like babies and doesn't respect that we're adults too. Big ego, little brain.
The worse of the worse. Can't teach. Talks a lot. No clear lectures. He talks about whatever comes to him that moment. Gets lost and we lose. Exams expect you to do all the work your self. Boring and lazy. Never take him.
Professor Nolan is hands down one of the best professors I have had at BU. I recommend taking at least one class with him.He is incredibly intelligent and a wealth of knowledge. His lectures are like stories and the discussions show his ability to stimulate students in the topics. He expects a lot from his students, but his quality makes up for it.
Probably the most arrogant professor at BU. Ask a question, you'll be degraded. He talks and talks and talks and says absolutely nothing at all. Will put you to sleep. His 'slides' are a single picture that he drones on about for an hour and a half. I would never take his class again. BEWARE!!!!!
Prof Nolan was a good professor. Doesn't really have time for questions - so beware asking in class. He is very receptive on email and office hours though. Genuinely caring person and is incredibly smart. Was a bit back and forth with him this semester tbh but overall a very nice guy. Take only if you're interested in history/are an IR major.
Nolan was rude to people in class and gave lectures that did not matter for the grade. Readings didn't matter either, I did not a single one of the readings and got an A-. There are many assigned. Lectures feel like a TED Talk where he talks about random details over somewhat random pictures of battle. Cringe jokes too. Do not take his class.
A walking paradox of a person. Has incredibly strong and emotional opinions on certain topics yet throws a hissy fit if any student in class challenges him about them. Wants to just talk the whole lecture without anyone asking ANY, not some, but ANY questions whatsoever. Unless you have zero knowledge about war, then this class is an easy skip.
Terrible professor. Self-absorbed. Very fragile ego. At war with himself. Loves giving too much work and then really low grades. Rude in his office hours. Avoid!
The amount of readings is a bit much, but that is pretty standard for BU classes. Overall great professor! I really enjoyed his lectures: he makes an effort to make the lectures interesting for the students. He makes the topics entertaining, even though this class obviously deals with pretty heavy themes
Nolan is no good. He was rude. Lectures are disorganized and irrelevant. Readings are full of nonsense and stuff. There are many assigned. Old man well passed his prime. Talks about himself all the time. Tough grader. Cringe jokes reflecting sinister disposition. Do not take this class.
