EXCELLENT PROF !!!!!! Take her course. She knows the material and knows how to teach!!!
Great teacher...loved the class...does a terrific job letting you know exactly what is expected...make sure and get her not louisell
This is not the easiest class, but if you can show up AND study the assigned topics you will do well. If you like to blow off class then don't even START this one. Catherine is a great teacher but she's not into lazy/childish students who just want to skim by.
If you ever have a psych class, take it with Barnard SHE IS THE FRICKIN BEST IN THE WORLD! Not joking, she made my day better every time, and she is the most kick ass teacher you could ever hope to have! -Anthony Bagley
i think i love this class more than any other class i've been to...she actually teaches you the stuff and if you need help she will help. great teacher...but pretty hard if you don't study.

she is the best teacher!! she is very clear and as long as you study the test objectives which she gives you, you'll do fine. this is a very interesting and fun class. it is by far my favorite class i've taken. she is the best teacher i have had so far!!! very helpful and nice!
End project confuding and tons of work!
Do not take this instructor. Her assignments are confusing and poorly written,if written at all. She doesn't cover the material that is the foundation of human development and is difficult to reach for help. She is often late for office hours. Even when she is available she makes students feel like they are an inconvenience.
She is by far the worst professor that I have ever had. I lost 5 points on a test, which had 21 points total, for using the adverb 'easily' rather than the word 'effortlessly'. The class consisted of cramming lists of her opinions to regurgitate on test day. I learned nothing, and I'm an honors student. I hope I never see her again, ever.
This class was very difficult. She made it even more difficult by her teaching methods. She would lock the door right at 6 PM and wouldn't let anyone in, but then she would keep us late. Then she would grade us down if our handwriting was sloppy, but then she would scribble on the board. Finally, she played favorites! Ugh!
she is a great teacher. she expects a lot out of her students, but she knows what she is talking about. i loved her class.
Horrible, I started with about 50 people in my class by the time i finally dropped half of the class had already dropped.
The class was ok, she was not that great of a teacher, her tests were pretty hard, only 6 tests in the whole class, if you do bad on one or two, you will be screwed
not a good teacher avoid her at all costs!
I LOVED HER! she was hard if u were not there for the lectures because he tells u everything u need to know. She gives u all the tests questions and all the answers during the lectures...if u are confused u can ask her and she will notmake u look like a fool. If u show up on the day of the test with no clue, she will tell u the answers! LOVE HER!
Lecture was interesting and informative. However, when test day came, six notecards were picked with test questions on them.Questions were worth between 2&24 points each.I found the questions to be EXTREMELY obscure and random, sometimes the question was not even in or textbook OR discussed in lecture.Good info,TERRIBLE grading criteria. AVOID!!!!!!!
She is very hard to understand, specially what she wants with testing. It makes NO sense. I constantly went up to her and asked why I failed my tests when my answers were correct and she didnt ever have an answer. Went to the Dean showed him my tests, and he agreed. I got my money backed and dropped the class. Horrible teaching.
she was really interesting and it was easy to follow along in class. the classes weren't too bad but her test were really REALLY hard. I got marked down A LOT of points on a test that I thought was easy. and she didn't explain what I did wrong. ouch.
In my opinion she is one of the worst preparers for tests. She does do pretty good in lectures, but when it comes to tests, it seems that no matter what you do, and how much you put down you will do it wrong. This has been a huge problem for my class. Pretty much everyone that I have talked to in that class still does not have a clue what she wants
avoid!!!Her method of testing makes no sense at all. I gave my friend a copy of my note sheet before the test and many questions we answered the exact same, however i got them all right and he got them all wrong. I honestly think her grades on tests are given out at random. Some material on tests not covered in lecture or text book.takethisandfail
I agree with everyone's comments about the tests. She was very understanding with me when I was sick and had to make up some work, but her grading criteria for the tests is impossible. Even if you write word for word from her lecture, its still worng! Waste of my time and money. Avoid at all costs!
Dont waste your time or money with this prof.
Shows no pitty to the weak minded. If your serious about psychology, this is the teacher for you.
Her test are really hard even though you can use your notes on them. Her classes are REALLY hard! Stay away from taking any classes with her.
Go to class, take good notes, and if you put in some time reading the chapter and adding some of the text to your notes, you'll do fine. Three movies in the class, which make it fun. People who do well in her class are the people who go on and actually finish college. It's not that hard, but you have to put in a little time to get an "A."
You will do fine if you keep up with your notes and read everything clearly
You need to be in class if you want to do well in this class. If she writes it on the board then it will most likely be on the test! Her testing method is REALLY HARD and its difficult to tell what exactly is going to be on the test and what exactly she is looking for!! She is a good teacher though!
She is a great teacher but the tests can be hard even though they are short answers and you can use your notes.
When I first started this class I loved her. She has a great character and is funny and dresses great. However, as time went on, I think she intentionally tried to fail people. Her testing method makes absolutely no sense. No matter how much you write...even copying down exactly what she said...it's too much or not eough. Lectures: good. Tests: BAD
lectures were entertaining. test=failure. most of my classmates dropped by the end of the term. you could use your notes on exams &write her words down and still fail. avoid! enjoyable to listen to, grading policy is on crack. grades give out at random!
Everything that everyone is saying about the tests are right. Grading is everywhere and you cannot anticipate what she is looking for. Avoid unless you want to lower your gpa.
DONT DONT DONT....take this woman's class! I am an A student, and I failed this class. It is the only class I have EVER failed. INTRO classes aren'tsuppose to be this hard. I had 30+ pages of notes at times and still didnt have some of the answers to her test questions. there are only 5 test questios, so if you miss 1 or 2 your screwed
Wonderful lectures, was very interested during class discussions. But unreasonable grading on tests, answers were never "detailed Enough". Understood all chapters thoroughly and studied, but dropped due to no test scores higher then 2.5 (highest grade give to me. Had to save my GPA...
The first thing she said to our class is; "I am the only professor at this establishment who has my doctorate in psychology." And let me tell you what- she made that very clear throughout the class. I ended up dropping the class because her tests are absolutely bogus and her grading system is un-accurate and vague. Take a different professor!!!!!
She totally suck! This was the worst teacher I've ever had. I am a pretty good student and do read chapters for exam and also write notes. But her grading style on tests were ridiculous. Its always not enough. You just missed the word in a sentence that's minus 2 I hate her. Takes attendance, but you don't get credit for it. Avoid Avoid Avoid her!
Professors should inspire us young people. I love to learn and get good grades. I tried so hard, passed 4 tests and failed 1 test because movie part was handwritten = fail class. I thought i was right, i was right, but i was wrong because "i have a doctorate". Psychs not based on fact, neither is she. Avoid. >50% dropped the class. Awful peculiar
completely unreasonable, one 66 point question on a 76 point test that completely ruins any chance of getting a good grade when her expectations/questions are unclear, i do 4.0 work and i will not be getting a 4.0 in this class. It is supposed to be INTRO, also she allows way too much story time from students and doesnt finish her lecture for notes
I took this class over the summer, and she was great. She always provided you with what the test was going to be over. You were allowed to use your notes from class (they just had to be hand-written). Very great class. Would take her again.
Completely horrid class. She asks very vague and ambiguous questions on her tests, but expects VERY specific answers. Rarely finishes her lecture. Allows note use, but they are rarely good enough. 66 point question on a 76 point test, 1 part of a question missing condones it to a zero. AVOID this teacher at all costs, unless you are a mind reader.
great lady, hard class. There are 7 tests and that's really all you have to do.They're open note, but can be very difficult. Also, you watch a movie called Fatal Attraction that's rated R...i was really uncomfortable watching it. so you might want to look it up before you sign up for the class. I did learn a lot and, overall, enjoyed the class.
The class was incredibly hard, but if you take amazing notes you will do well on the tests. Make sure you don't miss any classes because you will miss a ton of information that you will need.
DO NOT take this class with her. Her lectures are very interesting but her test are hard. Stuff she has on the test we have never learned or you cannot find them in your text book. When you ask her a question she doesn't even know how to answer it. Our whole class is failing her class.
I like this class.....yes the tests can be hard, but if you're not a whiny immature brat like several girls in my class, you should be able to handle it. Dr. Barnard is nice and is teaching a COLLEGE class. Quit whining
Her class was interesting and informative, I enjoyed it despite my lack of an A. The notes to study were spread out throughout the book and a lot of personal research was needed, even doing all this I still seemed to have trouble answering the test questions fully. Also, the only points are from tests, which was kind of a bummer.
Take good notes, use the book, and join in class discussion and you will be good :) If not then you dont how to take good notes or not going to class. If you do above you will do fine :) I got an A but never missed a day!! Also in the test give as much detailed information notes as possible! GL!
Good teacher. Sometimes hard to follow but willing to elaborate. Almost all test material comes from her lecture so recording the class isnt a bad idea. she has good examples to help you understand class discussion. Tests are rather difficult because she has certain things she looks for in answers yet you don't always know what they are.
Catherine Barnard is the best teacher I have had throughout my college career. Her lectures are very interesting and I never found myself not wanting to attend class. Her tests are challenging but as long as you take good notes and read from the book you shouldn't have a problem. She is very clear and easy to understand while lecturing!!
This is a fun class but extremely hard for "introductory" level. If you miss a class, make sure to take good notes on the subject from that day. Also, on tests, she asks very vague questions but looks for specific answers with key terms and if you don't use the key terms she's looking for, you get lots of points deducted.
She asks very vague questions but looks for specific answers with key terms and if you don't use the key terms she's looking for, you get lots of points deducted. She stated to us she hasn't giving anyone an A in four years. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
She gives a very vague lecture and gets annoyed when you ask questions. It is very hard to find the topics in the book. She doesn't ever seem to want to help. Her tests can be extremely hard because she can ask vague questions and her wording can be unclear. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER.
Barnard is not who you want. Tests are over topics not covered in lecture but hidden in the text. When the tests are handed out, you can expect to look up and see girls crying, while you're wanting to bang your head on the wall. Avoid this class at all costs! It's sad to say I enjoyed and found calc 3 easier than an intro lvl. pre rec class
Goes over notes in class and expects you to read along in the book at home. difficult class. the tests are randomly selected the day of the test so you never know what questions will be asked. she does not help you at all if you're struggling.
She was Horrible! Each test would be worth 100 points with only 5 questions. If you don't give enough details about your answers she would mark you down. Even though you're talking about the right thing! That's a whole letter grade! I had a 3.5 before I took this course. I wouldn't recommend my worst enemy to take this course.
The material was interesting but the tests (the only source for grade) were ridiculous… I gave answers directly from her lecture and or book, yet was marked wrong. When I asked for suggestions to improve she said I was too "anxious" and to just accept a C which KILLED my 4.0 GPA AVOID DR. Jekyll Mr Hyde!!!
Catherine Barnard is by far the most awful professor I have ever had. She does NOT care whether the material is understandable to her students, she offers no help at all, nor does she care whether her students pass the class. She is essentially a very bitter, callous woman. I, along with others, don't understand why she is still allowed to teach.
She's a horrible teacher. She wants very specific answers for her test but the questions are very vague. I have took notes word for word what she says and I still get marked down. She basically tells you on the first day you don't need a book but then she keeps referring back to it. she is very confusing!
She always gives very vague questions for tests, and expects specific answers. She is not a very approachable woman either. She grades only tests. She also says that the book you will not need that much, but when it came to tests you needed to take notes from the book. I suggest to not take it with her. TAKE IT WITH SOMEONE ELSE!
WORST class ever! She ACTS nice then sucker punches with CRAZY grading system. I studied more for tests in this class than for any other. I answered questions correctly from her lectures or from the book only to be marked way down if not failed!!! SHE SHOULD NOT BE TEACHING!!! Any good comments on this must be from her...
This class is nothing but tests, literally. You have a test at least once every week and that's all she grades on. It wouldn't be so bad but she is so specific with grading that its impossible to pass! I love Psychology but by all means, TAKE THIS WITH SOMEONE ELSE! She's a nice person, but a horrible teacher!
Extremely hard tests that often don't relate to the lesson. If you dont understand HER perspective, youre wrong. Nice lady, bad professor.
Dr. Barnard is an amazing teacher. Her lectures are so interesting and are filled with funny stories. It's obvious that she has so much experience to share. Her tests are insanely hard, though. Ask questions and you may get a better idea of what she's asking for, but tests are still crazy hard. Don't miss class!
Nice enough lady. But tests are impossible! Very specific expectations- but no clue on what they are. Very frustrating.
This class was an absolute train wreck. While the material was interesting the she was horrible. The tests were ridiculous and even if you answer the question right she would mark it wrong. Also I checked with my classmates I wasn't the only one having a problem with her multiple people were.
Makes up her own grading, doesn't matter if your correct or not. She feels that all students only deserve a C. Questions on exams make no sense. How she has you review also doesn't make any sense. Would never recommend her for a teacher
Im not a Psychology major or even interested in it but she teaches the class as though you are getting your PHD, Tests are half way to imposable, and she won't help you understand the info. she starts her orientation to the class by saying no one has passed her class with a 4.0 like she is proud of that. DONT TAKE THE CLASS!!!!!
She gives good lectures, but she is not helpful at all. shes very blunt when answering your question. its almost like she doesn't want you to understand. She always has specific answer shes looking for, and no matter how much you try to understand its hard to get what shes looking for on the tests. It takes lots of question asking.
Her tests are impossible to pass. You can get a 90% one week and a 40% the next. You never know how she will grade. I have had a 4.0 throughout my educational years and now this is the only class I have c+ in. There could be a thousand right answers to her broad questions she asks, its just a matter of picking the right example she feels is right.
Very nice lady & has funny stories, but when it comes to material, grading & quizzes, she is very unclear & gives you bad grades for the more specific answer than her broad answer. No mercy. No extra credit opportunities if your grade is down. Doesn't give out 4.0s. Take from a different teacher!!! Note- Blisters will be acquired from note taking.
She is a nice lady, buts she isn't very helpful at all with understanding the material. She expects you to already know everything. She only gives quizzes and they are almost impossible to pass. No homework, so your grade is only based on the impossible quizzes. Basically if you want to keep your 4.0 GPA then do not take her class.
while Barnard is kind - she is not very specific when it comes to what you need to know for quizzes - she has a student randomly pick 5 quiz questions from a stack of 3x5 cards - and sometimes the questions are 2pts sometimes they are 66pts - it's a STUPID way to quiz students.
She would grade hard on the tests/quizs. Make sure you study and take good notes.
PSY 150 was all quiz based so you have to know your stuff. Barnard is very knowledgeable, but her quizzes were not set up well. If you have any questions about what you got wrong on a quiz, don't even bother asking her to help you understand better. I tried that once and she just made me feel stupid. Other than the quizzes, its a good class.
The main issue with this class is the lack of opportunity for points. The only class assignments are eight, five-question, quizzes spread out across the semester. The questions on these quizzes are vague and and Mrs. Barnard wants VERY specific answers. Take extremely detailed notes and look up the LEARNING OBJECTIVES! Teacher is not very helpful.
A student's entire grade for this class is based off of only seven quizzes. I have attended every class period and still have a low C in the class because even if I get the right answers on quizzes, she takes off points for extra information. Additionally, she dismisses class if she sees anyone with a phone out and does not teach that information.
HEr tests don't cover what we've read. They are off the wall like she is. Don't take this class from Barnard.
I would not recommend this professor to a single person. She hardly replies to emails, she expects you to read her mind when it comes to answers she wants, and she is very vague. Probably the least understanding and unhelpful professor I've ever had and expect to fail even if you write down everything she says in lectures. Good luck.
Good lectures and a very interesting class but IMPOSSIBLE tests. If you write the correct answer, ask questions, put too much explanation in, you get marked wrong. Asked a dozen times what I was doing wrong and does not help. Im a A-B student and failed miserably. Don't recommend her at all.
This class is impossible. She lectures entire class and gives 8 quizes. these quizes are your only grade and they are really hard. They are only low points mostly out of 5 So if you miss any your grade drops. Im usually a 4,0 student and I almost failed this class. I love her but I hate how she teaches
Catherine is very knowledgeable in the field of psychology. As a psychology major I enjoyed her lectures. Make sure to take good hand-written notes, as tests are open note. Sometimes her grading seemed harsh, and the questions were not very clear. If you try hard and ask questions she is willing to help, especially if she sees you are trying hard.
She is a really nice person & funny. Quizzes are very difficult, take excellent notes & go over her study guides & supplement with information from the book. When you watch the 3 different movies, watch them multiple times. It took me a few failed quizzes to get the hang of how to study for the quizzes, but once I did, I did well. Not for the lazy
I have seen and heard many people complaining about how awful of a professor she was to the point that I almost dropped the class. I am glad that I did not do that. I have learned so much in her class and yes her quizzes may be tough but they are a good stepping stone in how University classes will be held. I would recommend this class.
I loved her! Your grade goes by 7 or so tests but if you take notes ( or when you miss have someone send you the notes) you will do fine! She lectures a lot which normally I dislike but her lectures were always interesting. Would highly recommend.
She's a fantastic person and character, the class could be set up so much better. Only graded on eight tests and she frequently shows movies. Avoid if you can
Was a great person and her lectures were very interesting, which kept you very focused in class, but her class is only 8 quizzes that are each 5 questions each and she grades very specifically to what she wants to hear. If you write too much, she will give you a bad score.
Notes were interesting along with her lectures. But it was hard to follow. The only grades in the class are 8 quizzes that are 5 questions long. If you don't take the notes correctly she sets you up to fail.
All her tests are open note, but they are so specific that its pretty much impossible to get a 100 percent. In my opinion, if the student is showing up to class every day and taking comprehensive notes and still getting low B's, C's and even D's at times then its the professors problem. I wouldn't take her class again.
This was the first college class I failed. There are 8 tests total (including the final) and are all 5 questions, mostly short answer. She doesn't give partial credit on tests even if your answer is somewhat right. All answers have to be strictly what she says is right. I would not recommend this class. Definitely chose another prof before her
Dont get me wrong, but she is a great professor for this position. But i would never take this class with her again or any other class that shes teach. She give you 8 quizzes and 9/10 you not going to get all 5 questions right. She gives out a lot of info , but mark the answer wrong on your quiz because its to much . Take it on your own risk.
This course is based off 8 quizzes only. The quizzes are open note, so as long as you attend class, understand the material, and take plenty of notes, you'll be fine! The professor is very knowledgeable in her field and gives plenty of examples. Attendance is important! All the quiz questions are lecture material.
I loved having her as a teacher! She is amazing and so caring. She lets you use your notes on all the tests so as long as you take good notes and come to class you are fine! The tests are always five questions and if you ask for help she will gladly provide it!
Shes great!
This class is an easy A if you show up to class and take notes on what she says - word for word. Got 100% on 8/10 quizzes. You don't even need to study or buy the book - her notes match all tests perfectly (open note on all tests).
I did not like her assignment and quiz styles - I felt the expectations were extremely unclear and there was no outline on what to study for tests
Tests were only 5 questions. There were only 8 tests and that was your entire grade for the class. They were open note but still very hard. Take lots of notes and ask questions before tests if you are not sure on some things.
I am an honors student and found the tests and exams to be very challenging. If you don't write EXACTLY what she is looking for, you will be marked down HEAVILY. Impossible to give the level of detail she's looking for. No extra credit. You'd have to be a psychologist do to well in this class or take this class as a repeat- who'd want to do that?
If you can, take this course with a different professor. Your entire grade is based on 7 quizzes that have five questions each that are very vague and ambiguous. There is one graded essay-type paper. I've never received a grade less than a B in my life and I am failing this class. There are NO retakes, extra credit, or room for error. Stay away.
I love psychology but I wish I had a different teacher. She is funny, but she will say one thing and then on the quiz it will get marked wrong. I tried talking to her about it and she made me feel like I was stupid. She also randomly chooses the questions before class and its only five questions so if you get two wrong you're already at a B- or C.
Great prof overall, helpful, kind, considerate of your situation. She ONLY grades on 8 test. If you fail one it messes up your entire grade. Write every lecture down word for word. Read the test questions carefully, ask for clarification about what she wants e.g. DX or theory. I put a book answer & got it wrong she wanted her word for word answer.
I normally get very good grades, I got a C in her class. I understood her lectures, but the only thing she grades in the class are tests, which are 5 vague questions. If you have to take the class with her, write her lectures down WORD FOR WORD. She gives you the whole class period for these tests so take your time!!!
Seems to give grades at random. Checked my answers on the tests: they were right, but she still refused to correct the score.
This professor made me understand psychology so much more, and I did very well on every test. If you copy her lectures word for word and follow the learning objectives that she gives you in the syllabus, then you will do fine in this class! This class does require you to do work outside of class so don't expect to get a good grade handed to you.
Mrs. Barnard did not care about my education. My quiz scores were proven to be graded wrong by multiple other instructors and experts on the subjects. She refused to help me in the class and was difficult to schedule time with. I feel like she did not want me to succeed.
ONLY lectures. Write what she says, word for word. Have to be a very good note taker. The only grades in the grade book are quizzes which are all short answer and only a few questions, so they are very easy to not do well. I highly suggest you make it to as many classes as possible because you won't pass just by reading the book.
Worst teacher ever!!
At first I was very nervous for her class, but ended up loving it. It is lecture heavy and you have to be prepared to write a lot, but you can ask her to repeat things. She turned out to be very nice and I am waiting until she teaches child psych to take it!
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. I had a 4.0 GPA through high school and 2 years of college. Missed 4 questions and that 4.0 is gone. No extra credit, no grade curve, no attendance points, and she won't be proven wrong. I gave her 3 quotes from the movie and textbook that proved my answer, but she refused to change my grade. The whole class nearly failed.
Do not take her. Don't do it if you care about your GPA. I am normally a 3.8 GPA student and I barely passed the class. I tried everything from study groups, reading the textbook, taking extensive notes and getting outside help. She only has 8 test each 5 questions on VERY broad subject. You can use your notes on the tests, but they are still hard.
Class was awful, structured terribly, professor sets you up to fail. There's only 5 tests, no other homework, NO extra credit, and no quizzes. The tests only have 5 questions, usually worth 2 points each so if you miss one or even part of one it knocks your grade down FAST. I Went to EVERY class, took notes until my hand hurt; still barely passed.
This woman talks a mile a minute, and you better write down everything in order to keep up; she's incredibly thorough. Her exams are short answer, and you need to pay attention to her word choice, because that's where students get confused. She is always open for questions to walk you through the question. She's brilliant and sassy, she's great.
I showed up to every class and took detailed notes, but the class is solely based on 8 quizzes that are only 5 questions each and usually tricky. You could tell that she was very interested in her work, but she didn't provide very good feedback or help for tests.
Her entire class is graded on only a few exams and does not allow room for mistakes. I attended every class and filled up a notebook of lecture notes and got above 90% on all but one exam and that one exam brought my grade down significantly.
She is very passionate about psychology and wants you to succeed. She lets you ask any questions you have after every class. You are graded on only few tests and papers, but all the tests are open note. Take good notes and you will pass!
If you dont write down every word she says, dont count on passing. No retakes, only graded off of 8 tests. I only wish you the best of luck.
There was no homework, quizzes, or extra credit or test make up. JUST ALL TEST! She doesn’t allow you to voice record lectures. I asked her for help and guidance on what I should do. She stated im not a crystal ball. She is not helpful or understanding. The only way to pass is for you to write EVERYTHING she say or your grade will drop majorly.
I LOVED this class. The other reviews worried me at first but I found it a lot easier that what was said. There is no extra credit and tests are all based on her lectures, but it is open note for every test. My class was in downtown Kalamazoo at night and she always walked with me and the other students to make sure we were safe. Would take again!
This class was very difficult I struggled every class period to write down everything she said and still did not do well on the tests. She is very passionate about the subject but quickly got off topic causing our class to run out of time making everything that was not finished our responsibility at home. Would not take again.
Tests are only 5 questions. Missing a single answer can severely impact your grade. Lectures are fast paced and she misses talking points that she then later asks as a question on the quiz. Questions are selected by having a student draw 5 cards out of 50 after lecture, so she does not know pre lecture what to be sure to touch on. No book.
This class was mostly based on the five question quizzes given over the lectures. The quizzes are open book so if you follow her lectures and write down what she says the quizzes should be easy. There was also an essay over the movie watched in class, which was pretty easy as well. She is straightforward with what she asks.
I do not reccomend taking this class if you can't learn without any visuals. You have to write down everything she says and she doesn't even put important things you NEED to know on the screen. She only has the name of the topic that we are going to be learning. She is not mean but I just didn't like her teaching.
