This class was very hard. The papers are out of this world hard, unless you are really good at papers, I don't recommend her.
I wouldn't recommend taking Bean. Not very helpful and the class is not the easiest. Papers are a bit much

She is a horrible teacher. She does not grade fairly and does not work to help the students succeed in this class. it's like she lives to have the students fail. She's a female dog.
She is a tough grader. but that's because she doesn't accept crap! She is very kind as long as your aren't annoying. But overall she is a good teahcer. -Brilliant!
I had Prof Bean my first semester in college, and I thought she was awesome. She makes a class that could be horrible very interesting and useful with her choice of topics. She cares about her students (dispite what others may say) but is not in it to give "easy As". What she taught me has been helpful and useful to me throughout my college career.
She just has you write papers and never helps you with your problems, you just keep making the same mistakes over and over again

If you take this class expect to know everything before you start. Mistakes are marked down but no advice on how to fix them is given. Also once you recieve a poor grade expect her to give similar grades to the rest of your assignments.
Good Teacher, pretty personable, Loved the class, not your traditional boring literature kind of class. Take home tests are kind of tedious and boring, Only 4 major writing assignments that really aren't to hard. Graded on class participation so be in class and make comments and you'll do fine. Also take advantage of re-writes on Papers.
Instructor likes papers that are plain with no voice. She docks points for adding zest into one's papers. Try to go for the most boring papers and I can guarantee you'll get an A.

Lets girls make up late assignments but guys fail them. never disliked a teacher as much as her. i missed a day she gave out the info for a new paper so she told me to look at the examples on her website. these examples were for a paper from last semister so she knew i would turn in the wrong one so the could give me a F

Terrible teacher. Don't turn in anything 5 mins late will count it as a 0. She is way to vague on everything. Absolutely ridiculous class, everything graded very strict. Never get help on any assignment, doesn't help you(doesn't care, quite frankly). Very, very, very hard teacher to comprehend, way to analytical. BORING!

She was extremely friendly and helpful. She expected as much as should be expected from a college level class. She was very thorough with feedback and left no unanswered questions. I wish all teachers were like this.
This professor was tough and would not take any excuses which I liked. She was willing to help you if you asked. All in all, I thought that she was a great professor.

Having an English class centered around pop culture was interesting.
Only two papers, easy quiz everyday, and two essay tests. 40% of grade was discussion (get a C for showing up). Class participation is not really my forte so I made out with a B. Pretty cool teacher.
I had Ms. Bean in the fall and loved her class. Very helpful, beautiful smile, made you want to go to class.
Grades papers basically down to the bare requirements. Don't add any flavor or personality into your papers and you'll do alright. She is however willing to help you do better if you're having trouble.
Very nice lady but tough grader. Also, you may make the same mistake a couple times and she will only direct you to figure it out on your own, which at times can be impossible. Show up to class, and participate ALOT and it will help out your grade. As tough as she was, I did learn a fair amount from her

This class is extremely challenging and thought provoking. The teacher really pushes you to do great work. You need to show up to class everyday and contribute a lot! Shes a tough grader but i learned so much.
She is a very hard grader on the papers, which are worth almost all of your grade. She doesnt like any personality in the papers. She doesnt explain what needs to be done for the papers. I would not recommend taking her class.
She's a very tough teacher, probably the toughest English teacher on campus. Your grade is heavily based on four papers. She tends to pick at every little detail in your paper and does not like creativity in your writings. I'm pretty sure she was failing more than half the class. I would not recommend her if you can avoid it.
Horrible teacher! She nit picks your entire paper every single time and never has anything nice to say about it complete waste of your time my class started out with 32 people in it and 6 survived...
The discussions were easy to participate in because the whole class is centered on pop culture. You write four papers about TV, Music, Movies, and Advertising. Very interesting material, but she is a ridiculously hard grader on the papers.
She grades tough but fair. If you follow the rubric you have a much better chance of a high grade in the class!
Professor Bean is not an effective teacher at all. While, her class discussions were fascinating, she was confusing when it came to what she wanted with papers. She wrote "cliche" on each one of my papers and wasn't clear with the rest of her critique. I was completely lost even when asking for help. I had to relearn some English because of her.
Straight forward class.Read the books,discuss and write essays and papers. She helps and willing to work around the schedule if need to. She is a very attractive woman as well, which was a main motivation off coming to class.
The four topics are very worthy of learning. Pop culture is fun to define since we live in this kind of changing world. Learning about the four topics is interesting!!! Love this class. Great teacher!
She is a touch grader but she is a good teacher. Didnt think I would even enjoy the class but it is standable. Papers are easy to write.

Bean is one of my favorite professors. She is super nice and grades fairly ! Her class was easy, only had to write 4 papers (big part of your grade) and read articles in CC book for quizzes on D2L ! If your organized and on top of things you will do fine ! Make sure to show up also, ATTENDANCE does count !!!!

Ms. Bean is positive which helps instill confidence in students. She knows how to communicate what she is looking for effectively. By far the best English teacher I have had.
At first I felt intimidated by her style of writing but again, it's the internet. Extremely helpful and wonderful to work with. Whenever I had a question, went to her office hours when she was there and was very helpful. Would take another class from her again.
She was a pretty good teacher overall. I didn't have any problems with her grading papers harshly. Got out of class early most days.
I was very disappointed with her. Not only was she a hard grader and didn't help at all, but failed me by 1%, and she refused to help me pass even though I worked so hard to do so. I took this class online but met her one time to discuss my paper, and she was barely any help. I was very upset with how the class turned out.
Age 30, and for the record this was my least favorite class ever. She is a harsh grader and unfair. I don't believe in group projects where others get credit for work they didn't take part in. Overall worst class ever. She was nice but very unrealistic in what was ok and what wasn't. All my other english classes were much better.
I really enjoyed this class. Her grading was a little hard but she was there to help whenever I needed it. I took this as a summer course so I was expecting it to be tough but it was not. I would highly recommend her!
Compared to my high school English teacher, Professor Bean is nothing. Our teacher in high school would totally have disagreed with the grade on all our A papers. I dislike group projects, but other than that,I really enjoyed the class!
I hate English, but I love this course. She is very helpful when anyone asks for help and she places clear expectations for you in all of your assignments. Your attendance matters because you have in class participation grades. If you have good attendance, participation is very easy. There are 4 papers, and very easy. Bean is a great teacher.
The class is very heavily weighted on papers (70% of your grade). Make sure to take the time to produce quality writing. Also make sure to be an active participant in the discussion rooms. If you have any questions, do not be afraid to email her. She responds quickly and will often give helpful tips. Beware of the group paper...

Ms. Bean isn't very helpful and is also bi polar when it comes to proof reading essays.
This was probably the WORST course I have ever taken. She was outright unwilling to help. I was placed in a group that refused to participate. I ended up writing the entire thing myself. She would not place me in another group and deducted points because they didn't fulfill the discussion. Had to threaten going to the dean to get full credit!
Her grading is very inconsistent. She was a very tough grader. Assignment instructions were very vague, but she wanted something specific. For anyone who struggles with writing, she is not helpful. We had a group paper which was extremely hard in an online class.
She seemed confused when asked a simple question. Very unpredictable because she would say one thing and forget it right after.
Do what she says and follow instructions and you'll be fine
Don't take this class if you expect to watch a movie do a quiz and a discussion. The amount of work expected each week is outrageous for people with full time schedules. She assigns movies that are both awful to watch and outdated. She goes around any questions you ask and is very unclear, and unhelpful.
Unclear Rubrics and confusing expectations
Professor Bean is a great teacher that really cares about her students. I had her for an online class. She really appreciates students who actively participate in her discussion groups. She also really likes when students are respectable in emails and responses.
I had her for an online class with not much instruction, she was helpful and gave good feedback. She is a very tough grader, don't expect any grace. She'll do a group project or paper which was awful! Ask for help and she'll give it to you. I learned lots even though I didn't want to take the class. missed a higher grade by 1 point.
She was horrible. I did not like her teaching. Anytime I'd attempt to fix what I did wrong on my previous paper it was still incorrect and she wouldn't give me feedback on what to do. I have to retake this coarse as I was failed for something she said I did but wasn't true.
Professor Bean was a decent teacher, though she was not always clear with her directions. I found myself reworking many of my papers due to lack of instruction. If English is not your strong suit I would suggest looking for a different professor. When you ask for help she does answer questions so if you want to do well be proactive about your work.
I had her as a PSEO student a few years ago. She is very nice. Not a stressful teacher to have. Lots of papers for this class, but they aren't hard at all.
If things don't go according to what she plans she acts out very unprofessionally and rude. She can easily give you critical feedback, but she won't help you any further than that. I really don't recommend the class to those who want to feel like their teacher cares about their success, Mrs. Bean is quite the opposite.
Too many group projects. Your grade will depend on their participation too. Even if you do most of the work, you will still get a lower grade if your group doesn't carry their weight. She never has any handouts or lectures so you will get lower grades because all you have is the text book to go on and a couple of samples to guess from. Horrible!

I had a severe medical problem and couldnt attend class for a bit, she didn't let me make up any of the points for days I missed. I also would bring my paper to her for review and she would tell me it was very good but then I would receive a bad grade. Do not reccomend if you want a teacher who wants to help you succeed.
I don't like her. She isn't understanding, and doesn't help out students when they need it.
By far the hardest class I have ever taken because the grading was incredibly inconsistent and the workload was unbearable. I privately contacted the professor multiple times to see what I could do to improve future assignment scores and got no helpful reply. If you don't want to spend hours posting discussions every week, DON'T TAKE THIS COURSE!
I enjoyes Ms. Bean as a professor, she is really easy to talk to if I needed questions, and truly wants to see her students succeed. 4 major essays - 1 being with a group. It is important to show up because she takes attendance to be put into her gradebook at the end of the semester. Participation is key in her class!!!
Very passive aggressive and will read your paper but not give very helpful feedback.
Considering this was an online course, of course there would be a lot of homework. Be aware of the first assignment due the second day after class starts. She's pretty consistent on grading. Make sure to read the textbooks, it really helps. Try to be online at least 3-4 times a week to post discussions. Be ready to write a lot!
I had no problems with her until someone in my family passed away. The day he passed away was the same day as one of her 300 point attendance for group work. I emailed her. She told me there was NO WAY to make this up. Ever since that day in September, she graded me harshly & was EXTREMELY RUDE. Words cant express how bad of a teacher she is.
Do not take a class that is taught by Catherine Bean. She is the worst teacher I have ever had. Absolutely zero flexibility and unachievable expectations. DO NOT TAKE
Take this class if you want to get a C or below and learn absolutely nothing. Second paper I wrote I had my dad who has been teaching English for 20 years read over it and she still gave me a 70/100. Has told me my ideas Arwen right but still taken off tons of points. Terrible class with an even worse professor. Talk about a waste of money.
I consider myself an easy going student.. That being said, Ms Bean is honestly a really bad professor. She gives out grades that are quite frankly bs. She doesn't tell you how to fix mistakes and has a terrible method for a schedule. Do not take her class, please it will save you headaches and confusion later.
She is a good person but not a great professor. Her lectures are extremely mundane. She gives out a lot of work to do through the entity of the semester. Her expectations for her papers (which make up 70% of the course grade) are extremely high. So unless you are an author or a teacher yourself, you would expect no more than a B on them.
She is a really bad professor. Her rubric was not clear enough with instructions on how you should format her papers and I got a ton of points taken off. she has kicked out many students including me, for being barely late when we had reading groups and I lost 300 points that I could not make up. I did not learn a thing in that class.
This "professor" does not care about her students & looking at the other reviews on her I am not the only one who thinks this. I am in a group chat with a few other students and we all received an F on the same assignment. Do not waste your long hours and time to try to pass, do not waste your money on this monster. Took this class online, first off do not even waste your time with this teacher. Quizzes are difficult and are off of random materials that don't help us learn. I cannot say that she taught anything in this class. assigned papers every unit (70%) of the grade-yikes! If the essay wasn't perfect don't expect to get a good grade on it or in the class.
She didn't review papers prior to submission. This would normally be fine, but even though the criteria and the rubric seemed clear, she had her own expectations about the assignments. Yes we peer reviewed, but we were all still confused from the start. I heard similar complaints from classmates. Overall she's a fine teacher, but be ready to work.

It breaks my heart to write a review like this. All of the other reviews are true. If you do not want your GPA to plummet, DO NOT take her class. The curriculum is awful. From the other reviews I do not think in-class instruction would be any better. Unfortunately, she is not a good teacher. I wish I had more characters left.
WORST TEACHER EVER! Had a 4.0 always and English has always been my strongest subject but she is the worst ever. Do not waste your time or tears. Your GPA will drop, just like your jaw when you read her ridiculous comments and scores.
A class with Prof. Bean is a really hard class to pass. I'm a PSEO student who's used to getting great grades on papers and would consider myself to be a good writer, but she always seems to find something new to critique. Her participation points in the discussion room are also really hard to follow as she tends to be unclear on what she expects.
Amazing teacher!! Kind/prompt/organized/helpful/pushes limits/wonderful feedback/expects excellence. Challenging class for HARD workers w/ already solid writing foundations. Issues: Encourages critical thinking but only presents 1 side. Materials incl. porn/vulgarity + more. Disgusting materials. 110% WOULDN'T recommend for PSEO students like me.
Very tough grading with your paper making up 75% of your grade. Everything except the papers are only 1 point so if you get crappy paper grades you will struggles to get a decent grade. She also gives so vague feedback making it hard to improve on your writing. Make sure you are 100% sure you are ready for this class with this professor.
The professor gives terrible feedback that contradicts themselves. Makes you pay out of pocket to watch all the films. Better make sure you have all the streaming platforms, and still will have to rent. Is rude. Has poor set up for class. Will tell you to refer back to the schedule which is over 60 pages. Doesnt answer question. Worst experience.
Do not take her class if you want your GPA to drop. She came off super rude to me, and her responses to your questions are very vague. She will tell you to go back and look at her notes which are very long and hard to understand. Worst experience with a teacher ever. She is not helpful in any way.
I would never take this class because of the professor. Honestly awful. Breaks my heart to say it but she went into the wrong career. Wants nothing but to see you suffer in her class. NEVER TAKE IT. You would be better off having a kindergartener teach you. Thank you and take my advice :)

Don't take this class unless you want to cry on a daily basis! Final grade is basically based on 4 papers as they are 70% of your grade. So if you do bad on one you are basically screwed. I would like to note I am a straight A student and I barely scraped by with a B in her class. She also comes off quite rude and her feedback is terrible!
Never got below 98% in any English class, in this, I barely got a B. Need to post a paragraph daily in the discussion board for decent participation grade, so no getting all your work done in 1 or 2 days a week. No deadline reminders. 1 late assignment allowed per semester, if something is not turned in on time its a 0,no partial credit given.
Professor Bean is a strict and harsh grader. I understand her intent is to make the students a better writer and reader, but as an introductory class, it is difficult to meet her standards. I do not recommend Professor Bean to those that do not like challenges, as I definitely did not as well.
Prof. Bean was a character for sure, she grades things with hard critiques. I get why yet once she grades assignments, she gives you plain and generic feedback... Never goes into great detail with her feedback. Also to attain the participation grade you have to post at least 5x a week and it has to be on three different days. This was exhausting.
I've always passed in English. She constantly gave me 0s, never explained/told me what to change. Way too much reading is required even for an English class. I passed AP Lang with an A but somehow can't get a decent grade with her. Very difficult, rude, and a waste of time. Take only If you wish to fail. There is no winning with her.

Her course is organized but it is an absolute workload. Struggling to pass a film class is crazy...
I took this class totally asynchronous. There were four main papers to write that didn't have to be very many words. (I think the range tended to be 1,000-1,500.) Stay up to date on your assignments and it ends up being pretty enjoyable.
Bean pushes her viewpoints onto her students and if you have any different opinions than her. She always skewed her questions in an extremely opinionated way. She had online discussion groups and penalized me when my classmate didn't do their work. She told me it was my job to encourage them to do their work. Ridiculous.
Do not take this course if you want to succeed. No matter what you do it will NEVER be good enough.
She did not give me any good feedback for my papers until after the last paper was graded.
Never have I ever struggled with english untill this course. Bean is EXTREMELY rude with the feedback given. Makes you feel incompetent while asking a straight forward question. Your thesis will never be good enough for her. She told me I didn't state my 3 reasons clear enough in my thesis when they were clearly listen out in order. IMPOSSIBLE

This professor gave me the most stress that I ever had in my life. I can not stress this enough. She would give you papers all the time to write. Compared to other professors provided by the College she is very critical. I was taking her class to earn credit and more than half of the way through the class. Please Anoka Ramsey fire her. Bean's attitude towards me asking for feedback on my papers was cruel- even though that's her job. Her expectations are unrealistic. Unless you dedicate every moment to her class, you will fail. I lost points for not being "encouraging enough" for my peers, even though I met all of the discussion requirements. She's not accessible. Not worth it.
She is a remarkably skilled teacher. She meticulously reviews papers, offering detailed feedback aligned with the rubric. Moreover, she is always available for one-on-one discussions to provide further insights, ensuring the revised work meets the rubric's standards. Her guidance has significantly contributed to my improvements.
It was good that she had an email of what the class structure was throughout the semester, but damn is she a tough grader. Especially for a film class where she wanted people to be either specific or want a certain answer. I love films but she made it HARD.

She says that she cares about her students and then does not listen when they have questions or need help. Do not take her class unless you want your semester to be 10x harder than it needs to be. This made even an online class super stressful. She was hard to contact, and her advice was little to none. She made me feel like my opinions were wrong. This class was very difficult and I don't recommend taking it.
I had high hopes but was honestly disappointed :( It felt like an environment where I wasn't encouraged to succeed. It was hard to reach her and the class ultimately seemed unimportant to her. I think that she seems like a sweet person and all, but sadly I would not advise taking her class.
I earned an A by 1 point and that was only because i was very conscientious and did everything on time with all the extra credit work however she has a very confusing class format and is a really tough grader. 70% of your grade is reliant on papers and I got flagged twice for AI detection when I never used any. It became very frustrastrating.
Professor Bean runs a tough but rewarding class. While the grading is strict, engaging with the materials and using resources like Unstuck AI can really help. Be prepared to put in the work, but the feedback is valuable.
I took this class as it is a required class for my major. I had 50-60% from the first week until I dropped this course. Prof. Bean is an awful professor. She won't answer emails, only messages through D2L. Her office hours are extremely limited to 3-5 hours a week. Her feedback is copied and pasted to everyone, and her communication is nonexistent.
Although Mrs. Bean was really nice, real sweet, she was a very tough grader. I consider myself an average writer but was never able to get a grade above a C on any of my papers. Her feedback didn't really help too much and seemed a bit difficult to decipher at times. Due to her harsh grading, my motivation dropped knowing I'd just get a C anyway.
This professor is by far the worst I've ever head. I took her class for APA and ended with a B. There are very little assignments but her grading methods are insane and she gives no feedback whatsoever ever. She will not help you at all, and doesn't give good instructions for assignments just gives you a grading rubric to depend on.
Save yourself the headache and do not and I repeat DO NOTT take any class with this professor. I do not know why she is even a professor still. She seems as if she hates what she is doing

This is one of the worst professors at ARCC. I would NEVER recommend her to any students. She gives you a grading rubric but even if you follow it, she still docks you points. You ask her for feedback and she gives you absolutely no feedback whatsoever. She doesn't care about you as a student at all, and it honestly seems like she hates her job.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE listen to me and other students when we tell you to do whatever you can to stay away from this prof. We are not over exaggerating when we say she is the worst possible option you could choose for eng. She doesn't care for her students, has the worst orginization/instructions, and will purposely make your experience alivinghell!
There is zero structure. You get a schedule for papers/ due dates, though in-class work is highly unpredictable. if you're like me and need consistency, look elsewhere. This class is HARD, it feels like you're supposed to *know* everything about the class before you even take it. And if you ask for help, you get vague answers and no clarification.
She does not respect her students at all!! If you want an understanding and respectful professor, DO NOT TAKE BEAN.
