All she does is read the slides, her exams are asking for the most irrelevant parts, the material is way too much to handle! She rarely gives any clues to help for the exams and when she was asked, she mentioned some parts as important and none of the exams had anything concerning that material! Takes too long to answer e-mails or never does!
Great Prof. Clear and very helpful. Seems like she really wants everyone to understand!
I slept in class, did not buy the book and got A+. What can I say more?
Awesome teacher, awesome class. You just have to study and memorize like hell for the final all multiple choice exam.
Takes forever to mark your projects and doesn't post clear instructions for the lab reports. Your left to kind of figure out what exactly she wants and then since she never hands back the labs before the next one is due, you'll never know if your doing well or not. Would not recommend just for this. It's December and I still dunno if ill do well
She's amazing! Definitely looking forward to taking more classes with her!
Amazing class, amazing teacher! Don't expect to just attend lectures and get good grades. As long as you study well and do your project in time you can't go wrong. The workload gets lighter towards the end of the semester and the final exam is very easy. Gives everyone a chance to improve their grade. Would definitely recommend. got -A as final.
The worst prof in biol department. she thinks that everyone has a master in biology , her lectures are boring. She doesn't teach much and the expects god knows what. In my class she was telling us what we should not put our teacher in shopping cart. Final is very hard, def, and long answers, basically you have to memorize everything
first day of class she promised won't fail anyone and its gonna be all multiple choice. Eventually 17 ppl failed and no multiple choice at all in final. Which means u have to remember every detail of 100 slides for each chaper. If u know nothing abt biology before, AVIOD her if u can.
Very nice & helpful teacher, who tried to make the class as interactive as possible with her assignment (cook & discuss healthy dishes). Midterm was easy, but the final was HORRIBLE. Textbook not a must but memorise everything on the slides, as the final is very detailed, with no multiple choice. I was told this would be an easy class, not so much.
This teacher is ridiculous. Dont listen to her telling you the questions at the end of your textbook are just like the ones in the exam. Midterms are easy, final not at all. If you dont think that you will remember every word on the slides, dont take this elective.
Avoid this teacher at all costs. She expects you to memorize almost 80 slides per lecture for the final exam (which is cumulative). Too much work for an elective and final is worth 60%.
Easy class for science majors, not for ppl outside. If you put it in the work its possible to get an A. Final is cumulative, you must be ready to work.
Great professor for a nutrition class that was interested in. No need for the textbook because the slides cover everything. Goes a bit fast through the lectures. Very helpful and willing to answer everyday questions about nutrition.
What a boring professor. the subject itself (nutrition) was interesting but she is so monotoned and boring. she definitely knows what she's talking about and she is definitely extremely approachable.
Great Course! If you are not a biology student, some of the chemistry involved may be tough but otherwise a very interesting course. The prof is friendly and helpful, you can tell she cares. Midterm and final are MC. You can chip in with people for the cookbook to share for recipes but you do not need the text book.
This course was a real meh. To Catherine's credit, she gives clear cut and fair midterms with no surprises. If you work for it, you will definitely get a good grade. So do not slack! Do the readings, supplement them with the lectures (which are so dry, I swear I got a nosebleed), and look up multiple choice question banks for masteringbio!
Amazing teacher, so helpful and kind, she really just wants what's best for you. She will listen to your problems, whether they are personal or with her class. I read what she told us to read, I went to class and I had an A+ the whole time! Her final is a bit tougher than her in-class tests though, so don't be fooled !!
Lectures are almost word for word what's in the TB. No need to go to class if you read the TB Chapters. MC Midterms (2x) and mostly MC Final. Straightforward exams. Have to buy subscription to publisher's website for quizzes (10% of Grade, min 6% if you answer all questions) which seems fishy. As long as you read and review ppt you'll do well.
Her notes are confusing, and come word for word from the textbook. Her test are unnecessarily hard for no reason, especially the exam.
Really easy class, you just have to constantly re-read her PowerPoint slides and memorize or actually understand the concepts. You won't pass this class if you start studying 2 nights before the test.
Lectures are kinda long and boring but Catherine really knows her stuff and is more than willing to helpanswer questions. I Attended half the classes, didn't buy the book and got A+. Read and understand the PPT and you'll do great. Just spend some extra time memorizing the minerals + their functions for the final. Easy
Her lectures are almost word for word from the textbook, which leaves a lot of material to study with no emphasis on which topics are important. Her lectures also consists of her reading from her slides which makes it very boring. Fair tests, as long as you study.
Slides are all what you need to know. Learn them and understand them. I wish she taught Bio226 too :( I really like her.
She is a great teacher-- super clear and inspiring.
CUTE AS A BUTTON! I love this teacher. It was a biology based class and I am in geography so things weren't as clear for me as they could have been right away, but the class was really really fun! She really knows what she's talking about and clearly loves her topic. Study for your tests, and expect your homework to take you outside a lot!
Super nice teacher so cute. Shes not too tough of a grader and is helpful. 372 started off a bit overwhelming I think she will change how she introduces the topic but after the like the 2nd class things get easier for test 1. There is a lot o material but it's manageable and her exams aren't that tough if u study.
I would avoid this class with Cathy. She tells you that you need to know for the exams. Once you get the exams, it's a big shocker because it's nothing that she told me. Fun classes but awful awful exams!!!!!!!! It really sucks that she doesn't assign any books for the class. Everything is based on her notes and lectures.
this class was horrible, if you plan on taking it HAVE A BIOLOGY BACKGROUND honestly this class was brutal, the material was intense. although the professor was approachable and nice her exams were terrible midterm 30%, final 60% and the assignments for each class 10% total. The assignments were the only easy things to do in this class
She is very friendly and great at teaching. Very approachable and knowledgeable about the topic. As a person who hates biology it was a tough class for me but definitely do-able if you put the work in. She is overall a great prof.
If you're good at memorizing, take her...
the course had TOO MUCH material! She was good, but she rushes through the lecture and it almost seems like she memorized word by word everything on her slides. You should definitely not take her class if you do not have a biology background. For an elective, BIOL203 is one of the hardest classes. You do have to go to class to pass the midterm/fin
I had the worst grade I ever had in that class. It's interesting but for a summer class, it's way too much information. I feel like only the biology students had good grades while we struggled to pass. So take it but be prepared to study a lot. She had 70 slides per classes and you have to memorize every word of it.
You do NOT need to be a biology student to do well in this class, I'm in accounting and got an A- in this class. Fun material, very interesting, if you have a general interest in knowing more about nutrition and how your body absorbs nutrients etc. and bother to do some studying, then you'll do very well.
She knows her stuff! No reading, she explains things great and she shares her own lecture notes so you wont miss much. She really is great overall but you do need to do your study and memorizing.
She's amazing! So enthusiastic about the topic and clear about her expectations. She posts her notes, sometimes throws in a video too. Make sure you do the assignments for 10 easy marks! She's open to talk in breaks and clearly cares for her students.
1st half of the course is boring. The 2nd not so much. But she makes it reallllllyyy hard for you to pass. Exams are never fair. All questions are based on very specific details. So memorization is key. you don't need to attend class. memorize the textbook. you have been warned.
The worst experience I ever had since entering in University!
Good for BIOL 203 but not 225. Lenient and easy going in 203, TEST ARE BRUTAL in 225. She tests micro details in 225(sometime detail that were only mention in passing once during class). Impossible to remember ALL those detail especially if you haven't already completed BIOL 226. Marks misspelt term wrong .
EXAMS WERE BRUTAL. SHE QUESTIONS YOU ON DETAILS THAT WERE NEVER PRESENTED IN CLASS, DETAILS THAT ARE BERELY MENTIONED IN THE TEXTBOOK. CLASS AVG. FOR THE FINAL WAS 43.
Test are fair if you show up to class and do the readings. Biol 225 is detail heavy so naturally theres a lot of memorization but she hints what will be emphasized in class.
Great Prof! Takes time to really explain everything you need to know during class which saved me hours of study time. Tests are easy if you don't skip class or else there's just too much to learn on your own.
Great science class for non-science students. You still have to like the topic though. She's super passionate about plants and nutrition.
This semester I had this prof in both Bio 225 and 203. Bio 203 was incredibly easy, she laughed a lot, and her lectures were actually fun. In 225 however, it was another story! The lectures were lackluster, the work was irrational... and the exams THE worst. The final in 225 was an absolute nightmare. BRUTAL end of the semester. Be ready to STUDY.
The key for this class is to learn every single detail from her slides. The textbook is not mandatory, but it was helpful at some points. After the first midterm, I stopped attending class and just studied on my own.. The lectures are heavy. Classes are dull but this class approach interesting topics.
She is one of the best teachers out there. She genuinely cares about her students. She is also very passionate about biology which makes the lectures much more interesting because of her enthusiasm. Her PowerPoints are clear and the course content is well-organized. She is always there to answer questions. She is a fair grader too.
It's a difficult class just because it is a lot of material. She tries to be very clear in lectures and is open to try and explain things differently if you don't understand outside of class. She's accommodating but don't expect to get away without doing work. You have no read, have to keep up with the material.
Cathy is hands down the best professor I have had. She is incredibly passionate about what she teaches and always makes class stimulating by sharing interesting facts on the topics. The class is heavy in information, but if you put in an hour a day you can easily achieve an A.
Passionate and knowledgeable. Overall a good teacher, however (and this is a MASSIVE issue in my opinion) a fair number of test questions were functionally impossible to know without a photographic memory. She says you only need to know the slides, she doesn't mention you need to remember the tiny throw-away analogy she made 8 classes ago.
professor Catherine is amazing! it is true that we have to pay attention in order to get all the extra information she gives but it is very interesting anyway! if you are one of the people who keep checking facebook or texting do not take her. she is very knowlegable about nutricion and biology in general. I would take her again for sure.
NOT A GOOD TEACHER. Reads off of the slides, VERY unenthusiastic, and tests do not contain material learnt in class, then when you go see her to go over test, she laughs at you for getting questions wrong. Very disrespectful. Never attended class, just studied her (incomplete) slides with the textbook and got an A+. DO TEST BANK QUESTIONS ONLINE.
Don't let any good reviews fool you. Yes she might be a nice person but as a teacher she is setting up her students for failure, she actually tells you on the first day of class that you will not succeed if you only read her slides. But wait, it gets better, her tests are not very achievable if you read her notes AND the textbook. Do not take her!
Assignments are very abstract (she admitted it herself) and take hours and hours of research for just 2% of the grade. She has very unrealistic demands and will remove a lot of points for not mentioning certain key words that she secretly wanted you to write in your answer. AVOID HER. Shes impossible to please. I got A+ but Im in biology.
honestly, her slides were incomplete, her lectures a snooze fest and her tests crazy hard. test questions contained things not even covered in lecture. her explanations in class used terms we hadn't even learnt and just confused you even more. the textbook only slightly clarified things. DONT TAKE HER. biggest mistake. should have dropped the class
Never ever ever ever take BIOL 203 !!!!! I REPEAT: NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS!!! It is extremely hard. It takes you like 2-3 hours to complete assignments that are worth 2%!!! Also the lessons are filled with way to much info!!! And the final exam is BRUTAL. I honestly don't know what is wrong with this teacher! She obviously wants her class to fail!
I absolutely loved her! She explains super well, albeit rather fast, and her tests are actually fair if you make the effort to go to class. I barely touched the textbook: I studied her slides and my own notes instead. She is also well organized. I don't know about BIOL203 since it's an online class, but definitely take her for BIOL225!
For an elective class for non-science student, this class is tough because she is all over the place and the teacher expects you to know her train of thought. She seems to think that students have her knowledge and experience, which is inconsiderate of her.
Lectures are often rushed at the end because she doesn't have enough time. Midterms MCQ are tricky, so take your time and read carefully. Final was very hard, study well for it! Class material is still interesting.
This class is very difficult for an elective! the teacher expects all students to have a high level of knowledge on the topic. Midterms and Final are extremely hard!! there is little assignments throughout the semester that are long to complete and not worth a lot. I do NOT recommend this class!
She obviously cares a lot about her work and the material she teaches, but for a course that's aimed for non-science students it seems a little too complex especially the at the level she grades
Dont take this class, its not an easy elective, its more science then it is nutrition and the material is overwhelming.
AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COST. DO NOT BE FOOLED. THIS TEACHER IS SETTING YOU UP TO FAIL. EXAMS HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH HER LECTURES NOR THE BOOK. REALLY LONG ASSIGNMENTS FOR SUCH LOW PERCENTAGE. TOO MUCH WORK FOR AN ELECTIVE CLASS. YOUVE BEEN WARNED
The midterms were difficult, but the final was extremely hard as she assumes you have the knowledge of a person with a nutrition degree. The assignments were medium difficulty but require days of writing only for 5%, and final is worth 50% so it can easily screw you over. Do not recommend this class to anyone ever, extremely boring and difficult.
The class is interesting if you are interested in nutrition. However, as someone with no science background, the expectations for the final were unrealistic for an elective class (50 multiple-choice plus 3 essay questions) . The exams are based on pure memory of intricate details, so if you are good at that then this might be for you.
she's awful. This class is an elective for non BIO students but she expects you to know everything that BIO students know. Just do yourself the favour and avoid at all costs!!!!
I'm supposed to be graduating this semester but this course makes me feel like this won't be my last... This professor makes this elective for non-science students incredibly difficult, avoid her and this class at all costs!
Take any accounting class if you want a better mark than what you would get in this class. Seriously, I'm not kidding. Go look somewhere else for another class, this one shouldn't be for anyone but biology majors.
This professor makes me want to get hit by a bus on the way to the final exam
If you study well, you'll do good. The people that complain do not study properly. 2 long assignments worth only 5%. 4 cooking assignments worth for 10% (easy marks). Final: 50 multiple choice and 3 essay questions worth for 60 POINTS! However, if you study everything, memorize and use her words in essay questions & assignments, you will do good.
She's very sweet and very passionate. You will learn alot. No book needed, she provides everything in her slides. Just be ready for the looooooong essay questions on the midterms and final. I wasn't ready!!! Labs are very confusing, sometimes frustrating and lack a bit of structure.
NOPE NOPE NOPE, don't do it!! All of the talk of this being an interesting and easy elective is wrong! It is very science based, TA never answered my emails and if she did she wouldn't answer my question, Prof never answers emails, Two long assignments that are worth 7 marks and graded harshly! Seriously please dont take this it is extremely awful!
Some professors show that they genuinely love their job, that they are patient and care for their students, as well as their student's success and their understanding. All that, in a healthy way. Unfortunately, while everyone has a different opinion, this teacher is not part of those professors. Interesting material/course though.
DO NOT take this class. If they told you it was easy they lied to you. The professor is passive aggressive and tough grader. The workload is absolutely insane.
Catherine C is not exactly a commendable instructor. Her written assignments just beyond exasperating. If I did not hate math I would not really waste my time on BIOL203, a course which is total non sense. I just did not have other better choices for online classes since some online classes have a prerequisite. Glad I am done with the course.
It's literally a 203 class. A 203!!!! not a 348 like she thinks. It's crazy tough grading for such a simple class. She thinks she's teaching the next generation of nutrition experts or something, when everyone is taking this class as an elective. A written assignment is due 30% when the final is due 25%.. so good luck with that.
Calogeropoulos is very demanding and asks for high level of work from students (it's only a 200 class!) , yet she makes many mistakes and is disorganized . Her instructions are unclear / confusing but her grading is tough and unforgiving. She extended deadlines after they passed, and published a rubric for assignments after they were submitted.
Yea this prof is pretty bad. Don't expect to learn anything or work hard and get good grades or enjoy the class. Catherine doesn't need to teach (it's all online) or grade (TA's do that), so she sends condescending emails responding to students' questions, and expects them to write like pro dietitians by the second or third week. Don't take!
Someone should remind her that this class is for people outside of program with 0 knowledge. My god the amount of things she expects you to know is insane and pair it with the most passive aggressive responses youll get make this class an insane headache. The masterchefs were enjoyable actually but what really ruined the class were the papers.
Currently in this course right now and wishing I never took it. Should've listened to the comments I read here. She truly does expect you to write as if you are an experienced nutritionist. Meant for students with no BIO experience? LOL YA RIGHT! This teacher cannot differentiate between a 300 level and a 200 level INTRO course. STAY AWAY!
Goes out of her way to be rude, unacceptable behaviour. Class expectations were beyond what should be expected for an entry level elective. Literally spends more time complaining about what students have done than actually teaching. I'm not joking - she does not teach, yet on her very few explanations, she talks about how dumb her students are.
I've never met a prof that refuses to answer a question as much as this teacher. Will go out of her way to make her students feel stupid for even having a question to begin with. Catherine, if you happen to be reading all of these negative reviews, realize that YOU are in fact the problem. One last piece of advice, consider a career change.
shes a really passionate teacher I recommend it if you listen carefully to the lectures and do a lot of reading
Listen to all the reviews about her. Do not take this class if you are taking it as an elective. It is way too heavy if you are taking it simply for an elective (especially if you are taking 3-4 other classes). I'm dropping it. Maybe I would've kept it if I had less classes, but definitely not worth my time and effort when it's just an elective.
Honestly, she isn't as bad as everybody says. The midterm was more than fair, pretty straightforward even if you didn't study like crazy. Yes, I do agree that the two written assignments are more challenging, but to be fair, they are worth 20-30% each. The rest of the assignments are the MasterChef assignments and they're practically free grades...
Literally the absolute worst teacher I've ever had. She makes her tests impossible to complete on time just so everyone can fail & she can boost us to a grade she thinks is acceptable. There's no reason why a class should be averaging so low. She is the worst, STAY AWAY !
Honestly, I saw the comments about this class and I was scared to take this class. DO NOT LISTEN TO THE COMMENTS! I'm doing very well so far, her tests are a bit challenging but if you study a few days in advance and generally understand the material it is not hard to get a B or higher! She only answers questions once and only once. I recommend!
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!! I CANNOT BELIEVE HOW RUDE SHE IS, WHAT TEACHER TELLS YOU YOUR QUESTION IS STUPID. CATHRINE YOU ARE DISGUSTING AND SHOULD STOP TEACHING INSTANTLY!!!!!!! BESIDES THE ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE TEACHER THE CLASS IS NOT TOO HARD.
I have never had a teacher was so rude before. Her instructions are super unclear (the essays - dont get me started) and she has no respect for her students. I really do not understand how she. A teacher. Would not recommend. Would never take again.
Do not take this class. It is awful. Its really disappointing because the topic-nutrition is very interesting however the prof is not nice nor is she helpful. Insturctions for the written assignments are vague and too general. Any "further instruction" is not good either. She is very condescending
I'm really shocked by these other ratings, I loved this prof and her course was interesting and fairly easy. There are frequent, small assignments--but they are really easy and not demanding whatsoever. She's very sympathetic, understanding and caring. Overall, if you do watch the lectures and do the assignments, you'll get an easy A!
Tests are hard & she could definitely communicate with her students more. Her teaching style is good enough & the material is hard but interesting. I find it "lazy" that we're graded based on 3 major assessments though. How am I supposed to practice answering questions if the only time I do is on the 3 exams each worth 30% of my mark?
The Professor was specific and extremely helpful it would not be far from the truth to say she walked everyone by the hand on how to get an A. I feel bad for students who wanted a class where you only use shallow thinking and put in little effort since that wasn't this class. It's online, don't take the class if you aren't able to be independent.
Shockingly condescending and borderline rude, says: you are not showing signs of cognitive thinking", " If you don't care to see your feedback then I don't care to talk to you"also discriminatory towards immigrants. All the negative feedback from others here is correct I regret not reading it before taking the class.
Prof Calogeropoulos is a good teacher. Her lectures don't have the most personality, but they do the job and are informative. She's pretty accommodating if you send her an email. In the online class, she held no mandatory Zoom lectures, which is a definite plus. One downside is that the class had no assignments except for the midterm and final.
I'm not understanding why there are so many negative reviews... this class is not difficult at all. The exams were open-book and she gave us so much time to complete them. The MasterChef assignments were practically free marks and the two essay assignments were straightforward. She also extended and held office hours daily, overall very sweet
Catherine is super helpful! If you're having trouble with writing your essay she's there to help. The midterm and final weren't too bad... if you studied its easy to get at least an 80. Essays were a bit challenging just because she gave us a lot of freedom to write what we want. She's very passionate about biology and hopes for us to enjoy it
In her video/lectures, she gives so much information (not always relevant). Her test rely a lot on small details. A couple of times she wasn't punctual in uploading her videos which can be frustrating.
I dont come on here to criticize my profs, however she is one of the most DISRESPECTFUL & RUDEST professor I have ever met. She made me feel so dumb for asking questions during office hours I could not believe it. If you ask her to explain something; she copy/pastes from the instructions with no elaboration! Take this class, but not her as a prof!!
All i have to say is wow, the tests are challenging and the assignment instructions are ruff. she is un-motivating and treats us like we don't know what we're doing. i took this class because my friend said it was an easy class, honestly you could probably save your money and spend it on another class where the teacher is more motivating & helpful
One of the worst teachers I've ever had, and I'm not exaggerating. Her lectures are incredibly dense and very long, her tests albeit not proctored, are so unnecessarily difficult and super specific with not enough time to complete. She even said "dont expect to get an A" at the BEGINNING of the semester, shows how much she cares for her students...
her assignments are not very clear... and she answers your question if you meet her outside class, but she keeps talking about how as students you have to asks her questions early, etc... kind of nagging I'd say. I understand she can't think of every one of us, but some of us do have conditions and her consistent nagging just puts more pressure.
I don't understand the negativity here. Along with FINA 200, Biol 203 is one of the most useful courses you'll ever take for real life skills. The assignments are a little vague but if you just do the lectures and some reading, you'll pull off a great mark. She gives ample time between assignments and was very accomodating. Connect sessions helpful
Avoid this prof. Started of the semester by announcing no one would get an A and that her midterms would be very difficult. Her prediction came true. She gave only recorded lectures that were unnecessarily long and unclear (she doesnt know how to condense or emphasize information), and she doesnt respond to emails. Avoid.
This class is heavier in work than some of my 400 level classes. The midterms are easy, but the criteria for the papers are unclear and she grades them harshly. I tried to asked the professor for help multiple time, but the office hours are in groups so she only adresses general questions. I got B, as an elective class I wouldn't recommend.
The content is very informative and a great basic foundation for understanding nutrition. I suggest anyone taking this course to utilize Cathrine's office hours. It is the only time you can get more personal feedback and any clarification you may need, as her instructions can be vague. If you are taking this class for an easy grade, DONT!
Never taking this class or this prof again. Her instructions are vague and unclear and when asked for help she repeats what she wrote on paper. This was a 200 level class but didnt t feel like one. She doesn't respond to emails, does 3 minute zoom calls (makes you feel like a pest) If you are considering to take her class for an elective DON'T!
IF YOU ARE NOT IN SCIENCES, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. This is NOT an easy elective. Instructions are vague and the prof is not approachable nor is she helpful. All the negative reviews here are accurate, listen to them and stay far away from this class.
Awful teacher and very hard grader. Instructions are vague and she will not take the time to clarify them. Too much for an intro-level class. Trust the reviews.
I wish that I could rate this teacher a 0/5. Very tough grader, assignment description is very vague and long answer questions on the tests are difficult. This teacher doesn't realize this is an intro class. This teacher is honestly horrible and doesn't care for her student's success. I hope you read this and consider before taking :)
not surprised by the rating . instructions for the final paper were vague. unclear grading. No rubric. Not approachable at all. took 2 months to get feedback for an assignment. Tried to teach me about time management in a condescending way. I have never had a problem with getting quality work in on time... the outlines should be CLEARER.
Overly dense, rambling lectures. Very condescending and criticizes questions that are too basic. Tests are overly long and very specific. Not very familiar with the content in the first half of the class. Not well versed in the more specific details of the content and just relies on the textbook verbatim. Mediocre prof.
She's awful, condescending, and very rude. Not helpful at all and really goes out of her way to make you feel dumb.
this prof has an attitude let me tell you, she thinks that we are in a masters class in biology or something. she expects us to understand all the terms and concepts of this class although its considered an elective. she doesn't teach because its EC and expects us to understand her 100000 word assignment
if i could fire her i would, she discriminates against the minority and is an absolute racist, and bases you off where you come from. this is horrific and uncalled for, she deserves to get kicked out of Concordia. this is NOTTTT an easy elective. harder than the 400level comm classes. Please guys lets end her and destroy her
Very condescending and highly judgemental prof. Gives extremely long tests and overcomplicates simple concepts. She expects you to essentially suck up to her and dedictate all your time to her class. If you ask a question she thinks you should know, she'll criticize you and lecture you about the amount of effort you put in.
Genuinely one of the best lecturers I've ever had! Super knowledgeable and makes the material that can be dull very interesting! Tough grader but the material itself is tough and important to know so that makes sense
She's a mediocre part time prof that gives stupidly long tests. She also tends to be pretty condescending at times. Not a bad person I'd say but she could do without all the blaming students for everything. She's gotta chill with the length of her tests. The material itself is pretty easy. Its a lot of basic physiology .
Lectures are long and boring. Often doesn't give transcripts. Exams are extremely specific, and tbh I've got other classes to study for. Don't take if you're not ready to.
Not the worst prof Ive had, but definitely the most irritating. Her lectures are super dense and she just rambles on incoherently, makes simple concepts very confusing. Her tests are extremely long and she always has to curve the grades so idk why she keeps making them insane lengths. Gets annoyed at questions unless she likes you
Her exams are extremely specific (get ready to comb through the textbooks word by word if you want to get it right), and it feels as though she wants people to do badly in her class. It is ridicule that students taking an elective to LEARN new things, finally come out of a course with a lower GPA because of unreasonable exams.
This class is such a waste of time. There is no prep work at all in terms of what is needed for you to do. There are three separate teacher for this class, and each of them have their own style which makes it very confusing when it comes to doing the labs. The lab exam and final are worth was too much for was you're being taught and unrealistic.
She is honestly such a bad prof, We had two midterms a whole huge paper and a final worth 40% that she only gave 2 hours for (66 multiple choice and 6 long answers). Her exams are very tricky it's almost like she wants to see people fail. Unless you want to be completely stressed out, I do not recommend. Honestly very insensitive.
She is a fair teacher I found, it's true that the class had a good amount of tests/homework for a class that's mostly taken as an elective by many, but nothing out of the ordinary for a university class. Not the best teacher I ever had but I don't have anything wrong to say, get ready to work a bit and you will do alright!
what can i say the smallest things from the textbook will be on your test.
Run for your life. Never in my life have I hated school so much. Her slides miss a lot of information that you'll have to write while she's talking (she talks a lot). The material is pretty heavy enough, but she makes even simple terms complicated by talking a lot. Her exams are heavy, many questions, not enough time.
Someone said run, listen to them. Exams are so long w/ no time to finish. She rly doesnt care, our exam had Qs wrong & instead of fixing it she said its ok its only 8%. Get ready to write a lot of notes bc her slides are empty & she rambles FOREVER& complicates every sentence for no reason. I love biology, but her class is vile. Projectile vomit
The midterms and final were the damnedest thing. You'd read the questions and ask if you had studied the right material. In one question, the TA told me you only could get the right answer if you searched for the question online. They were also poorly paced time-wise. Unless it's a mandatory course, this will be the one that brings down your GPA.
I was scared to take her class after seeing all the feedback, it's not as bad as it seems but not great either. She seems inaccessible outside of class, her lectures are super long and she's a harsh grader but overall the topic is fun and the master chef activities are cool.
EC summer class. All the materials you need to do well are available to you. Watch the lectures and do the readings it will be fine. Exams followed what we covered, the nutrition assignments were super fun and really easy. Prof is not great at answering emails but your TA will answer and help you within 2 days.
A real travesty and disgrace If you ask questions she tells you to think for yourself, seems itritated never available to chat and she even told another student and myself she "never received our emails"then has the audacity to be an extremely tough marker. I regret taking her class she acts like shes going to accord a PHD I learnt NADA
Condescending and incredibly irritating prof. She demeans you for asking questions and overtly says that it must be because you just don't put in enough effort. Her lecture videos are overly long and rambling and tests are confusing and very specific. The fact that she teaches a mandatory 200 level class is just a travesty.
She is a great lecturer and her class is very interesting. She posts her lectures in advance and class time is for discussion. However in the second part of the semester, she has been disorganized and put us behind schedule. I recommend her but she needs to be organized and stop promising she's going to post lectures in advance when she never does.
just to be clear it's not the course or the material that was difficult. In fact the course was easy. However it is the professor who is extremely rude and condescending. If you have a question I suggest you save time and look it up on google cuz she won't help, but instead she'll make u feel stupid and confuse u even more.
Study however much you want. You can never guarantee an A+ with her. Had her online, gives 40mcq and 3 short answer in 1h15. We asked and asked her to change the format. Signed petitions to the department chair. She changed nothing. Too lazy to correct so nothing like quizzes to bring up ur grade except two midterms and a final. Bilious teacher.
Lectures are recorded so you can go over again on your time which made time management for this course very easy. The MCQ were very fair if you understand the material, the SAQ were quite tough but she curved them each time. She changed the grading scheme halfway through so that students can get a much higher grade by dropping the lowest midterm.
It's really sad honestly, her lectures are awesome and she makes the course material interesting. It just didn't make sense to see how hard and specific the exams were. I had to give her a bad rating because in the end although she is great we are in university to get good grades. I felt totally betrayed.
She is awful, her lectures are super confusing and exams are something taken from the Mars. Honestly 90% of the students are retaking this course again in fall 2022. Just hoping not to see her face again. If you understand everything by yourself then you are okay, but don't expect to understand something from her. SHE IS JUST THE WORST PROF EVER!
Even though the lectures were only 40 minutes long, it takes 4+ hours to get through a lecture. We only had 2 midterms worth 20% each and a final worth 60%. I recommend going to her in person question period that take place during class time. many of the saq on the tests were discussed in that class.
If you're used to getting good grades in Biology, boy are you in for a struggle. Very condescending teacher that expects the worst from students all the while making ridiculously difficult exams. She's on some weird power trip, try to stay away if you can.
All of the reviews for 225 say more or less the same thing because its accurate. She's very condescending and puts you down for asking questions. Her lectures take forever to get through because she rambles on constantly and overcomplicates even simple subjects. Her tests are overly long and difficult with questions that are out of left field.Avoid
Not very invested professor, did all the lessons online pre-recorded that we had to watch before meeting in the lecture hours which gave us even more workload. Midterms and final were super specific and demanding compared to what we did in class. Never take her as an elective, if you can avoid, AVOID
Lectures are very heavy. I took her course online, and she made it difficult for everyone, since her videos were so long and detailed. She said that grade A is hard if not impossible to get with her. Extremely harsh finals, very conceptual questions. Almost feels like she is in competition with her own students. Answers emaild after weeks.
Probably my biggest regret of my entire undergraduate degree. - No constructive feedback when you look to improve - No external sources provided (textbooks etc.) to help understand class material - Poor assessments - Not approachable
If you can, avoid at all costs.
If you are even considering taking her course, don't. For an elective, this course is so heavy, so much to retain. The cooking part is fun BUT I would not recommend this professor to anyone, she is very harsh and lacks understanding. The exams are super hard, very detail oriented and questions are often confusing.
AVOIDDDDDD I took this class as an elective, but this year she decided to do the final exam proctored, and is worth 40%, Is really not worth it. DONT TAKE IT even if people tell you that Master chef assignments are fun is just 10%.
Decided not to teach us and to instead post online video lectures. In class, she just pretty much read out the exact same garbage she read from the textbook during the video. Completely worthless. 2 tests and a final and her short answer grading seems to be a bit questionable. A lot of MC questions were taken from the Campbell's textbook test bank.
Not a bad prof, but not amazing. Explains content well, though lectures were a tad bland. Grading scheme somewhat brutal, some assignments would've gone a long way. Exams were comprised of MCQ that were sometimes irrelevant to the taught material, and too few SAQ to fairly test us on knowledge - only 4 SAQ on the final to represent ~20 lectures.
BIOL 340 with Dr. Calogeropoulos became my best class: it was very interesting with fair amount of workload. I know a bunch of people from the class who enjoyed it as much as I did. The exams and grading criteria were fair and clear. Labs involved lots of drawing but it was the same as other similar 3-level lab classes, and there are only 5 labs.
She posted video lectures and then just went over them pretty much verbatim in the class. Waste of my time. Only grades were 2 midterms and a final, some MC q's came from the textbook's test bank. Lazy teacher, boring lectures, no idea what we should or shouldn't care about knowing.
She doesn't give As easily. Very nitpicky on exams; simply answering the questions will not be enough. You have to add extra details that the question did not ask for. Does not give much feedback unless you go to office hours and ask. Labs were a lot of material for the time you have but not difficult. Lectures cover everything you need to know.
Dr. Calogeropolous is a tough grader but wants her students to do well. Her class was set up differently than any other I've taken, as students are expected to attend the lectures having already watched them online and taken notes. The course is quite material-heavy, and re-listening to all the information in class is so helpful for memorization.
Just avoid at any cost. Horrible really. Exams were so bad, content wasn't explained well. Class average was D. no quizzes or essays or homeworks, all the 100% were on midterms and finals that were impossibly confusing and she's a tough grader.Take her class online if you have to in the winter but not the in person course.
This professor is very knowledgeable about plants and always more than happy to share. Her classes are clear and concise. The exams & midterms are all long answer. No multiple choice or short answer.
I have never read more confusing notes in my life. Really poorly explains concepts and the order in which concepts are presented make no sense at all for comprehension. if you must take this course to graduate then at least do it online, but WARNING in person final! If you are taking this as an elective just DONT. You have been warned...
This was the most DENSE class I've taken & I'm in a science program. Hard concepts are not explained in depth. The lectures (online) take very long to get through, they are not stimulating, and they are overloaded with material. The final (50MCQ,4SAQ) focused on minor details rather than concepts - not fair considering amount of material. AVOID
Her instructions for the written assignment are abysmal, having a 1 on 1 is a waste of time as she keeps interrupting you and is very moody. She doesnt even know her own book. This will be my lowest mark by far
Biology can be very interesting when you have a good teacher. Clearly, she isn't one. I learned little from this class and she could have done better if the instructions and contents make more sense.
Genuinely do not take this professor's class unless you are desperate. I concur with all of the other commenters. She is condescending, rude and unhelpful when looking for clarifications in course material. Never encountered a professor who is more hostile to students and indignant at having to actually do her job. AVOID.
All below comments are accurate. Had her for the summer intensive and it was the worst decision. She expects us to read BOTH texts books plus the class lecutres and memorize it for them final is it is CLOSED BOOK and PROCTORED. Her expectations were too high for what this 200 level course should be. I do not recommend if you have other options.
Save your gpa and stay away from this professor!!! Her expectations are beyond ridiculous, not to mention that she is very unapproachable and gets easily annoyed when students ask questions (as if this is not her job). All the comments below are true
GPA destroyer. Even the good students are getting Cs. Instead of a helpful marking scheme for projects this professor alludes to "vibes". (!?) she has told us that she does not care about grades/ results but that attitude is disrespectful to students who desperately need good GPAs for medical school, grad school etc. if you can, I'd avoid.
This class was very interesting, the prof wrote the textbook for the course which is very short + concise. The tests were reasonable I found, it was a nice amount of science considering I'm not that good at science.
She insisted on us doing real posters I paid more money for this course than for some of my huge textbooks. She has no clue that some people don't own printers and that we live in the 21st century. And it's like the grades are based on how she feels that day and if you're artistic. she is not helpful or responsive at all! please do not take her.
A little refreshing to see how other peoples experiences are similar to mine. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS. Not great. Very difficult. High high expectations for projects worth 10% of your grade. And then you work 30 hours on it and still get a C.
no matter how hard you work you cannot expect a good grade. by putting this many hours and effort into a course, you should expect to get an A if it was any other professor. Unfortunately, this is not the case with her. The grades you will get cannot be explained and if you ask her to clarify, you will be even more confused.
The grading system is unclear and inconsistent, making it difficult to predict outcomes even when following presumed criteria. Project instructions lack clarity and concise wording, often leading to multiple interpretations without clarification upon request. Her lack of response to emails is both frustrating and comes across as disrespectful.
very nice, if you pay attention thats already a huge grade booster. Shes detail oriented but quite fair
She is the type of teacher that will write for you a vague assignments instructions and expect details answers she 100% not honest. Not capable to answer many questions. Her exams are based on memorize everything, and will humiliate you if ever did a honest mistake like its the end of the world or insulted her. I hate biology now, thanks.
this is the second course i took with her and i could confidently say that I will never take a course with her again. she is extremely unrealistic and doesn't even want to help her students! she wouldn't help us when we would ask for clarification, she makes you feel belittled when you ask questions and she never tells you her expectations.
Took this course thinking I could give it less energy and focus on core courses but I was wrong lol. I working my butt off for an A+. 3 exams with short answer questions, it wasn't necessarily easy. Teacher isn't terrible, but she is kind of unclear and rambles a lot. If you are interested and stay on top of studying you can do well.
As a consistent A's and B's student who had this professor twice, I found her grading to be inconsistent, and her communication was unclear. Despite my efforts, I received unexpectedly low grades without explanations. My emails seeking clarification went unanswered. I do not recommend her, and if I am being honest I felt discriminated against.
3 unclear long projects, quizzes every labs, 2 final exams. The excessive workload for a conceptually straightforward class significantly impacted my overall academic performance!! It took away time from my other classes, ultimately SEVERELY impacted the grades I had diligently worked for! I'm so heartbroken!
I've never put in so much effort for such little return. Someone mentioned she's a GPA destroyer, and I couldn't agree more. You're putting in the work, spending money on ink for photos, only to get no clear definition of something as basic as Biodiversity. Frustrating. Avoid
Prof Calogeropoulos is very serious but passionate about her work. She makes a decent effort to help students engage with the material as this was an online class on eConcordia back in 2021 (maybe in-person she is different). It is very easy to secure above a B+ in this course with or without the professor's input. (super easy course, elective style
JUST AVOID! I AM SERIOUS!
Does not share PowerPoints of the material or provide feedback on online quizzes. Has very little availability (takes days to answer emails if answers at all). That professor believes every student is her enemy and it makes the lectures quite tiring. Heavy courseload, tons of reading and material to cover. The content itself is interesting.
Extremely mindnumbing lectures and in-person exams even though completely online course. weekly quizzes amount to 20% and a term project that amounted to 20%, final and midterm were 40 and 20% respectively. Seems like a decent teacher if she actually taught instead of going thru the slides that she posts anyway, the zoom meetings were pointless.
This course is very demanding for an elective. Final is worth 40% and is cumulative, takes days for prof and TA to answer an email, again a lot of work for an elective especially since it is never clear what exactly to study for the midterms or final. Would not recommend.
never
The lectures were okay and the textbook filled in the gaps but the main issue is she is completely inaccessible. It will take 4-6 business days to hear back in an email or just not at all. One positive is she is very excited about the plant part of the course.
She wasn't as bad as everyone says. The online lectures were clear, accessible to ask questions. The material however is so heavy, so many details, exams are hard as they focus on small details in the online videos and textbook, where the info is different so makes it worse. The presentation we had to prepare was easy, but needed a lot of time.
Professor Calogeropoulos has high expectations, but if you stay engaged and use resources like unstuck ai for study prep, you can do well. Attendance is a must, and the grading can be tough, but the material is manageable.
Obscenely large and tedious workload for an elective. The assignments themselves are not hard but very time consuming for very little percentage of your final grade. This class has two textbooks, so two readings every week along with the lecture and an assignment. Avoid!
Avoid her as much as you can!!! I took her class expecting she wouldn't be like the professor described in the student ratings, but then I had a terrifying experience. She acts kind in front of you, but she's completely different, especially with her grading. She shows favoritism in the class and is not a fair grader! She doesn't know how to listen!
This prof is unreasonable in her expectations for an elective and incredibly judgemental of students - unless you're a favourite (hint: even if you are, she will still refer to you in some sort of unfavourable way). She is often belittling to others in zoom lectures who are asking very understandable and reasonable questions. Avoid at all costs.
Worst mistake of my life was not dropping this class. The midterms are 2 (yes TWO) essay questions and the final is only 3 essay questions (on 30). There are so many details and she expects all of them in order to get even close to an A. The exam format is the worst I've experienced in University or Cegep. DONT TAKE IT!!!
She is so condescending and rude. She has favourites in class and even then she's not tolerable. She expects you to know every single detail and the test format is actually inhumane. 2-3 essay questions. I would avoid at all costs..
She is definitely into her lectures and she does know what she is talking about. But she isn't helping the students succeed. Her exam are essay type questions and you need to write down everything you can perfectly. She handed out 55-65 to most of my class. Getting a good grade in her class is extremely difficult. The labs are super easy though.
Literally traumatizing
This teacher does not have an ounce of empathy for her students. Her corrections are brutal, she states one thing in her instructions and come to the actual grading of the assignment, she deducts marks for reasons that were never mentioned in her instructions. Trying to communicate with her is as if you are communicating with a wall. Fully avoid
She cares about her students, however I feel like the massive classes take away what students could benefit from the classes. The large diverse people end up showing how some other disciplines are not ready to learn this course. FUN time Learned a lot, If u are a gymrat take this class you will become a beast at nutrion for your future diets.
I barely did this class because my course load was so heavy, but the midterms are online open book, the master chef activity is 100% participation and the written assignment can easily be done if you put 1 day aside for it. The final is in person so beware, but I got 51% on final (didn't study/didnt do class) and still finished with an A- soo...
She isn't the most approachable but you can easily pass without studying. We got an automatic 10% just for posting pictures of 4 meals, the 2 quizzes are open-book and for the paper we got 40% automatically just for adding certain things (tables, titles). The final is the only thing that's hard but I got 60% and still finished with a good grade.
This prof "teaches" the online Nutrition class and makes students pay 125$ for a trextbook that she wrote and lectures that are just powerpoints with an AI voice over on top... that should be illegal. Save your money and avoid this class.
She's actually great. Loves her subject and her enthusiasm is highly infectious. If you genuinely dislike her teaching style, you're either a first year student or have never had a real ruthless prof. Her tests are hard, but not impossible. The format is unorthodox, but highly effective. I actually learned something in her class.
Everything went well up until the final exam. The final was extremely hard, and a large portion of the class failed. If you do well on the paper and quizzes, that could make up for it but keep in mind throughout the semester to do well on the other assessments.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. SHE IS THE WORSE TEACHER EVER. I WROTE A TEXT MYSELF WITHOUT AI, SHE GAVE ME ZERO “BECAUSE I USED AI”.
The exam for this course is ridiculous. Its in person and its cumulative with no study guide, leaving the students to guess what to study for and the questions on the exam are the dumbest questions ive ever been asked at Concordia. The questions don't test your knowledge, its just a guessing game which can really negatively affect your gpa.
her course is well structured. Not that demanding, easy to do well if you put a minimal amount of work in. Also very interesting course, and you get free grades for cooking! a good elective to take to balance out heavy/harder courses.
The grading on the paper is very tough, strictly follow guidelines as you will lose big marks on it for minor mistakes. The final exam is cumulative, but if you study well you will not find it difficult. The midterms are very easy and the lessons are clear and straightforward. During zoom calls she is very kind and answers questions thoroughly.
Had her for both 227 and 225, and although this class was easier in terms of content, her exams were consistently tough. She's clearly knowledgable but her slides are just paragraphs of texts and the lectures feel all-over the place. Learning outcomes are important, but she also expects you to know every detail.
I don't think she likes summer students. She gives 4 chef assignments, a written assignment, 2 midterms (which makes no sense to me), and a Final exam. She said that there's no way she could make the final online, yet majority of the other econcordia finals are online, plus she said most people fail the final so yeah, do with that what you will.
Overall course was not that difficult and layout was simple to follow. Just pray you don't run into any issues or need clarifications on anything because neither professor nor TA responds to any emails or questions. Also don't expect any useful grades back before your final.
Professors or TAs don't respond to emails or any questions in question forum
Easily one of the worst classes ever. The lectures were rough, while the midterms were easy, but the final was a nightmare. No study guide, tons of content, and no way to know what to focus on. She even brags that 50% fail. Most people gave up and left 30 minutes into a 3-hour exam. Avoid this class unless it's your only one or you enjoy suffering.
One of the worst classes ever. Rough lectures, easy midterms. But the in-person final was BRUTAL!!! There was no study guide, way too much content, and no clue what to focus on. She even brags that 50% fail. Half the class gave up 30 minutes into a 3-hour exam. Avoid unless it's your only class or you enjoy suffering
Provides you with the material you need to do well, expects you to behave like an adult and take your responsibilities and do the work. I loved everything about her class.
The final is tough a lot of people fail it. If you're planning to take this course as an elective make sure to get full marks for everything else it's very doable. The cooking assignments are basically free points because you can upload anything. The written assignment is so easy and you can get a 100 if you follow instructions. Overall a nice course
Not a human. Just a robot.
EXTREMELY unorganized teacher expects you to memorize EVERYTHING in her lectures (random studies/stats) tough grader however doesn't give you an outline/grading criteria or gives clear feedback for improvement exams/midterms are vague essay type questions material is interesting and easy but because of the teacher I really disliked the class
I had Dr.C several times now. I get it! but remember 200 L courses r HARD. She's v/ passionate & acc encourages success just struggles to convey it. I've since grown to LOVE her teaching style (in higher level courses). TIP: Listen!! if she makes a link, note it! and use the Learning goals (yes vague) but they are a blessing & rare 2 have.
I would to start by saying that she is not a bad professor but rather that the tests were just annoying she does not specify how detailed does she wants us to be (just a heads up you have to be extremely detailed). Labs are easy, the final was 4 long answer question each 10 points, 2 midterms 3 long answers and a group project (final messed me up).
It's an information-dense class. However, she is very present, and wants you to succeed. No textbook, slides only. **attend class or you will fail** Exams are essay based. Labs are extremely easy and fun. This is a 300 level class, so grading is more severe & synthesis of knowledge is necessary. If you put in the work you will get a good grade.
