Dear God, by the fifth class you'll want to jump out the window, DONT TAKE HER!!
aw, she wasn't THAT bad. i've had worse.
the worst i have had. couldn't stand her. final really sucked
She is heinous. You can't understand her through the accent. She is the worst professor I have ever had.
She isn't easy but she grades very fair and soooo helpful if you ask her... She does have a thick accent but after the first class or two you get to know it. Attend every class and you will be fine.
Just be polite and show up for class and she'll pass you. She grades based on who she likes and who trys hard, so if she likes you, you won't fail.
Not only does this professor know what she's talking about, she knows how to relate it to kids who've never taken a calculus class before. She's a little intimidating at first, but if you're struggling, she's MORE than willing to help you!
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF IF YOU ARE BAD AT CALC. Our class wrote to the dean about her. Class average on a test was 71% and she said that was too high. The next test was an average of 65%. Hardly ANY partial credit. That is bull that if you work hard she will pass you.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF! She is the worst professor I've ever had. She does not prepare you for exams or quizzes. Be prepared to be frustrated after every class. She's extremely unclear as well
do not take it....seriously
Catherine is a very nice lady. She explains concepts really well and is very passionate about the subject matter. She gives PRACTICAL real-life situations in which you would use the material. She has a very charming AUSTRALIAN accent, and I would highly recommend her!
She is very willing to help, but her class is hard. Tests are very unfair. I wouldn't recommmend her.
This class is difficult, but not impossible if you study. She is more than willing to help if you need it. If you study, you'll do well. Be prepared to put a lot of time and effort into this class.
Many people in my class thought that the class was ridiculously hard, but I don't know what they were talking about. The tests weren't easy, but I always did well on them. She goes over problems in class and gives you practice problems to do everyday that will help you for the exams.Do the homework
WORST I'VE HAD! DON'T TAKE! I think her class is designed so that many students fail and have to retake the class, hence employing her and her miserable TAs for another semester. Unclear. Wretched TA who spoke very little English was ABSOLUTELY USELESS. The little I did learn I taught myself.
horrid
best math teach.
I'm half way through taking this class and I have to say, it is NOT easy. You deff. gotta work at it and go to class, do the h/w and go to recitation. Going to her office hours has proved very helpful, she is great 1 on 1. most ppl get "B"s or below on the tests but her grading scale rocks, (75 is still a B!!)
surprise! you may actually have to study. who would have thought, with this being a college class and all? all in all, GREAT teacher, really tries to help students understand overall concepts, etc. do NOT be afraid to ask questions, she is very helpful.
Nobody likes calculus, but she's better than Arrington. Her tests are hard (expect C's) but her final grading scale is really messed up (75-89=B). Take Dr. Whitehead!
Calculus as a subject is hard, so you need to cut her some slack. If I hadnt taken Calc in high school, i would probably say that this class was difficult, but I find it EXTREMELY easy this year. Shes a good teacher and does her best to teach the subhect. She also cares about her students and she will do everything she can to help you. I have an A.
I am taking a small class with her that is 3 days a week and she is awesome. I took calc in high school but I never understood any of the concepts until she taught then to me. It is very important that you do the homework and go to class...the time goes pretty fast anyways so it's not like you are suffering the whole time
I never took calc in high school so I found this class to be extremely difficult. While the material is not impossible, her tests make you go one step further, very hard. I would not recommend this class or this professor.
She insists on writing everything on the board, so you basically spend the entire time copying down word problems. Tests are hard and you're not allowed to use a calculator. Had to withdraw halfway through the semester because I could not keep up, and my recitation teacher was no help.
i took calc in hs but didn't do too well. learning it again in college w/her was so much easier. basically everything she teaches is in the textbook so the best way to study is to do all the hw problems, which is what i did. tests are easy n calculators aren't needed in the first place if u can do basic math. finals easy too plus she's nice~
She is an extremley nice lady and will go out of her way to help you, I had some problems this semester and missed a lot of class but she was very understanding.....
goes very fast during class. If there is one minute left in the class she will cover a new topic very quickly. What is the rush for? why cant she slow down and make sure everybody understand what is going on. Calculus is not that easy. Plus the T.A. was not that much of help
Professor Duane-Lennard comes off as a real ****. She doesn't curve, her tests are hard and she assigns lots of homework. If you pay attention in class (which I rarely did), you'll find that a lot of her examples are very clear. She is great one on one too, if you go to her office hours, she does want you to suceed, you just need to work hard.
i went to class a lot the first half of the semester but gradually made my way to once a week and was fine. she teaches from text, but not helpful and confuses many students and herself at least once a class...but i had no problem in the class, just do your weekly homework and take your weekly quizzes--neither are hard, and TAs will be very helpful
She's nice, although I can see that she may have a bit of a nasty temper. She goes very quickly in class. I'm still in the class, so we've only had one exam so far. The quizzes were easy, though. She assigns a ton of homework, which isn't too bad because you have until the following Thursday to complete it.
Duane Lennard is a very good, but often intimidating teacher. Class is very important because she gives excellent explainations. If you bomb the finrst test don't worry because the final can completely redeem your grade.
She is a very good teacher and knows the material. The only problem with her lecture is that she goes ridiculously fast and its sometimes hard to keep up. Tests are much harder than the quizes and homework, but she is very helpful outside of class.
Hard tests. Lots of work. And its calc
I had calculus my senior year of high school, but a lot of the concepts I never grasped because of my teacher's lack of clarity. You won't have this problem with this professor. She explains everything very thoroughly, is always available for help, and is extremely sympathetic to circumstances beyond students' control. I think she's great.
I didn't like her or the class all that much, but from what i hear, all the business calc professors have a common characteristic:they are not good. She is helpful at her office hours, but you will spend half the class trying to catch up to what she is doing on the board. She goes through everything too quick.tests arent hard, just way too long for 50mi
Horrible teacher. Her tests for the 1hr 15m class were truly impossible. The class averaged a 59% on one test. If you think you understand the stuff in the book, that's fine--don't expect that stuff to be on the test.
Her class was semi difficult b/c she creates problems that make you think. Halfway through the semester you might hate her but you'll realize that she is really nice and teaches at a higher caliber than the other class(which makes the final pretty good). Also, she is really helpful and she makes you feel comfortbale when you come see her for help.
She's a horrible teacher, but as long as you study really hard for the final you can pass the class. Don't expect to do very well on the interm tests though.
VERY HARD!!! I had no previous calc experience and she only made me hate math more than I already do. Very helpful in office hours, but moves very fast during the class. Test's are nothing like the practice exams she gives you. I would not recommend this class or teacher. I have yet to take the final, but i'm dreading it.
Aced the first practice test, thought I was ready for the test. Wrong. Not even similar. Goes way too fast during class and uses 6 chalkboards at the same time. Didn't work for me.
Well her practice tests were not helpful at all.Just do the homeworks a few times before the test and you should be fine. The class average was horrible for each test but she does let you drop your lowest grade.
Professor Lennard is fairly clear in class, but she moves pretty fast and erases quickly. She's very helpful in office hours and can be extremely understanding in the case of personal problems. She does take attendance, so while coming isn't mandatory, she keeps track. The textbook is only used for homework, don't bother bringing it to class.
In other classes, it's forgivable for a professor to slip up and make a mistake during lecture. This is because the material isn't very difficult to begin with. With Prof. Lennard, you're guaranteed that she will make a mistake confusing herself and the class AT LEAST once a lecture, sometimes more. This is unforgivable with material such as calc.
prof lennard is not the greatest teacher in the world and calc is very tough to begin with. i was struggling towards the beginning of the course but started going to office hours and it helped drastically and i never really struggled after that. she is the type of prof that wants her students to do well
great professor. gives really good examples and step by step instructions on how to do problems. struggled a little in the beginning but found that doing the list of practice problems given at the beginning of the semester helped a lot! lets you drop a lot of grades including lowest exam. overall ended up liking the class a lot!
the hardest class EVER!!! she moves about 1000 mph and there are NO easy days. she is accessible during office hours, and you'll need them. i think i passed only because she always saw me at office hours
Take this professor if possible. Very helpful, wants you to succeed. Hands out practice exams that are very similar to the real ones (a rare practice at UPitt). She is also very funny, inadvertently.
shes ok as long as u try ur hardest (in terms of studying). i did take calc in HS. all these negative comments r ppl who ddnt try. i mean yea shes prob not awesome n the material can be hard, but come on. plus its BIZ calc, not like real calc.
I had straight A's in high school calc. This class is much harder as i barely have a B. She is a good teacher and I find her to be very knowledgeable. SHE DOES NOT ANSWER E-MAILS THOUGH AND ITS ANNOYING
I'm not super at math, but she made this class impossible for me. I've taken other math classes in college and i've passed with b's. I had to withdrawl from this class because my grade would be no higher than a d by the end of the grading period. Don't take this teacher.
You must go to recitations because there are quizzes every week and you have to turn in the homework. She drops an exam which is nice, but the final exam is extremely difficult. Overall, she is a nice teacher, but is sometimes confusing.
Don't take this class if you haven't taken calc before! She goes so, so fast. It's basically impossible. Tests are ridiculous.
she goes extremely fast on the board and does not really explain things well. you can do well in this class if you read the textbook and study hard. If you don't study you WILL NOT do well.
Wants students to succeed and is accessible. Will help you out if you ask for it. At the same time, she covers material extremely fast and teaches you as if you already know all of the material.I didnt take calc in high school so I thought the class was pretty ridiculous. If you go over as many practice problems as possible you should pass though.
Very very nice, and generally wants you to succeed. However, she goes very fast and may confuse herself. Do the practice tests, she puts some of the exact questions on the actual exams. If she likes you, youll probably get a better grade.Very smart, shes worth taking.
Fav teacher thus far @ Pitt. Great lecturer and she is a funny, engaging lady w an amazing accent. Rly wants you to excel esp if you go to her office hrs. I missed some classes but you can teach yourself from the book. 3 Exams+Final and I believe you drop lowest test score. HW due every week which shouldn't be too hard.U can get an A if you study.
I had her for BusCalc last semester. The only reason I did well is because i had taken a calc class in high school and she wasnt really teaching me anything new. I wouldnt suggest taking her class if you've never had a calc clas begore becauise she goes really fast and does not explain things well at all.
Awesome teacher. She was super organized and did everything she could to help students do well. Best math teacher ive ever had!!
She is great, she is one of the most energized people I have met. She goes a little bit fast, so if you have not already had calc you will be a little surprised. But for someone who has already had calculus she is great, and VERY HELPFUL!
she is BY FAR one of the best professors at pitt.. energetic, sweet accent, just an overall great woman. if you have already had calc in high school, this class will be a breeze for you.. she is the best option for business calc so take her if you can!
One of the best teachers/professors i've had in my life. She is EXTREMELY organized. No surprises on any tests. Cares alot about her students and wants them all to do well. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
Cathy is a very nice and helpful lady, yes her tests are difficult but the final is easier. If you study and go to her office hours you'll be fine. I never had Calc before but she really helped me out. Use her office hours and you'll be fine.
Cathy is awesome. She is the clearest, most organized math teacher I have ever had. Really makes sure students understand the material. DEFINITELY take her for Business Calc. As far as calc goes, its the easiest.
Her tests are hard and you cannot use calculators, but Cathy is extremely clear, and organized, and very accessible if you ever need help. If you work hard, stay on top of your work, and study her old tests, you will do well.
Tests are pretty hard. Grading scale is awesome though, B goes down to 75. Just get Cs on the tests and be happy. Final is not too bad and can replace all test grades. If you get all Cs on tests and B on final your tests turn to Bs. Its not TOO bad overall. Class is more just writing instead of learning. So teach yourself before tests
good prof, very nice an kind. always looking to help her students. be sure to sit near the front, she pratically whispers and is very hard to hear.
Cathy is really hard, but if you go to her office hours she is really helpful! she is a really good teacher but is very hard and test can be tricky.
Compared to other calc classes offered at Pitt, Bus Calc with Cathy is the easiest route. She explains all the topics well and the tests aren't that difficult. DO the sample exams and if you understand everything on them, you'll do fine.
Hardest class I have taken at pitt yet. First test average was a 55%. She talks fast and erases faster. Tests are brutal but similar to practice test,do it and know how to do every problem. Extremely nice lady and had lots of office hours so it is possible to get help, you WILL need it. The final is a breeze compared to her tests.
She is the first to admit that she expects a lot more than most Pitt calculus professors. She covers the material at an incredibly fast pace (claims she has no choice). Quizzes, homework, and exams ofen consit of tedious, bizzare questions the text will not help you with. She cannot always answer assigned problems. Old-fashioned/no Blackboard.
Extremely hard if you have never had calculus in high school... Ridiculous word problems that don't correlate to anything. She is nice though I guess
Her exams are not easy, but if you do and understand her practice exams you will do fine. She has a lot of office hours, go to them if you need to. She does teach fast, but she will stop and slow down if you raise your hand and ask to clarify. Getting a B is very possible. Genuinely nice and helpful, definitely recommend her.
She has a very helpful grading system in that she dropped 4 of the 11 lowest quiz grades and uses your final exam grade as your total exam grade if you do better than your overall in term exams. An example would be I had a very low f going into the final but ended up with a C in the class because I got a C in the final.
She writes extremely fast, so fast that it is actually hard to keep up let alone comprehend it. She won't slow down even after asking her to. Tests are much harder than the practice problems. She was pleased with a 62 average on the exam. However the exams are curved, that's probably the only good part. And she is nice, just a terrible teacher.
DO NOT BE AFRAID. I took her for BusCalc. I failed my first exam and I ended the class with an A. She may write fast, and she may have hard exams, but it pays off b/c the final is easy. Do well on quizzes, do your homework online, and you will be fine. Also, she is an Aussie and she's very friendly. Makes the class enjoyable :)
Awful. Acts as though we should already know new material bc she teaches higher courses. writes and talks so fast and will not slow down even after being asked. Exams & hw are hard. Class scored 61 average on first exam & would not curve it. Chooses problems to grade that entire class missed. She basically sets you up for failure. Do not take her.
This will be a difficult class for you if you did not take calculus in high school. If you haven't, I highly recommend going to see Cathy at every office hour possible. Even those who have taken calculus have a difficult time in her class so expect office hours to be a bit crowded.
Cathy is awesome! Her class is tough but if you are willing she will do everything she can to help you. And her Australian accent is adorable! Definitely need to go to class and recitation. She'll also make your final exam grade your class grade if it's better.
Lectures are confusing and she doesn't stop for anyone. It's as simple as this- If you want to do well, please don't choose Lennard.
Not for the faint of heart. Moves quickly and if you don't have strong algebra skills you will struggle immensely. Tests are EXTREMELY difficult and nothing like homework, quizzes or in class. Grading scale dips down however so not all is lost. Final test grade will supplement 75% of your grade if it is higher than your average in term tests.
She moves very very very fast. Its hard to keep up and you end up teaching yourself the majority of the coursework. She puts online homework and assigns multiple at a time making them very hard to complete
I would not recommend taking her class if you have not had calculus before. She moves very quickly, and she doesn't necessarily teach method as much as theory. This was my toughest class freshman year, and I had calculus in high school. I would highly recommend going to her office hours from the start if you are struggling.
This course requires a lot of time and effort even if you did take Calc in high school. However, she is very willing to help her students and is quick responding to emails. Go to her office hours if you are struggling, it will help a lot! Her tests are challenging but if you are comfortable with the sample exams she gives out you will be fine.
Cathy is the best professor I've had so far. Got a 43% and 44% on the first 2 tests. The third test i got a 70% and ended up with a C in the class. Do the homework and go to recitation. And go to office hours so she knows your face and name.
This professor, while enthusiastic, was not all that helpful even if you managed to catch her during office hours. She's not that clear and if you're not good at math you will struggle. She moves way too fast. Would not recommend to someone who is not good at math or even ok at math.
Cathy was a great professor for Bus Calc. While the class is hard, it's doable. Do the practice problems and study for the weekly quizzes. Also, do the sample exams and go to her review sessions prior to the exams. 3 exams (lowest dropped) and final. If you do better on the final then on the exams, it will count for 75% of the grade.
Cathy is a very nice lady. If you took precalc and not calculus in high school, I would not recommend her. Her tests are very hard. If you choose to take the class, make sure you read the examples in the book and do all the examples and practice tests she gives you. Pretty tough class.
Extremely difficult if unfamiliar with calc. Tests are nearly impossible. Lectures so fast, you can hardly keep up. Offers help if you go to office hours but hard to understand cause she's so intelligent. Go to every class and try to take good notes. Weekly online graded hw. Recitation is a must cause there are weekly quizzes. See the TA for help.
Don't take her unless you're a calc genius or willing to study hours a day for this class. She offers help but is difficult to talk to on a student level. Writes so fast during lectures you can hardly take clear notes. Recitation quizzes are tough and exams are even harder. I failed all of them and luckily aced the final which was a lot easier.
If you are completely new to calculus, do not take this class. She will fly through the material. In my case, I tried extremely hard. During finals week, I read the textbook front to back twice and still failed the class.
She doesn't teach at all. She writes problems really fast on the board and talks really fast. No time for learning the process or digesting what she's even talking about. I stopped taking notes halfway through the class and just watched her run through the problems. I read the book twice (more helpful than her teaching). Still failed.
Expect to have online work once a week. Her office hours are very helpful. Quizzes are vastly easier than tests. She does not give a ton of examples, but you will get lots of practice with problems by completing the homework and going to recitation. I have only used the textbook for practice problems and to clarify points in lecture.
Probably one of the hardest classes. Average on all midterm exams was around a 50%. Be prepared to hibernate in the math department to get help. Piece of advice . . . GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS. It does help.
This was the hardest class I've ever taken. As someone already said, the average test grade was roughly 50%. The HW, Quiz's and Tests are much harder then anything in the book. The final was much harder than the practice tests she gave us. Pretty relieved I am done with this class.
Cathy is a good Professor who knows what she is talking about. Her lectures move at a fast pace and she blows through information. To succeed in this class do all of the practice problems that she gives you, and attend her office hours and recitations where there is one (very easy) quiz each week. Do not miss any lectures... ever.
Expect to study and work hard. Go to office hours, especially with questions. She will answer them all and work through problems with you. I would suggest taking another professor if you have little to no Calculus experience. PS. She always wears crocs.
She sucks, she does not prepare you for the final, and does not teach you at the same pace (faster) or the same way that other Business Calc professors will. Do not take her, she will slaughter your GPA and make you want to cry. I am writing this review post final, 4 girls were crying in the hallway that were in her class. She does not prepare you.
By far the hardest class I have ever had. She in no way prepares you for the final exam. In term tests are unfairly hard and final is even harder. No example she gives in class comes even close to test difficulty. The book is also not able to help because there are no problems in it hard enough to compare to exams.
Cathy was tough & moves fast but she is always willing to help & is super hilarious & nice. Her tests & the final are VERY hard. Do practice problems, attend every class, go to office hours (make sure she knows your name), & study hard. Averaged about an 80 on tests & somehow pulled out an A in there. She is hard but I'd recommend her!
Honestly, she's a babe. Got an A in the class. If it wasn't for her Australian accent and he crocs, I would have failed the class. Would recommend, especially if you enjoy things like fish and chips and outback steak house.
Dont take if you have NOT taken calc before. Cathy blows through info fast so its helpful if you have taken calc before. She is super funny and understanding but hard as hell. Her exams are harder than the final, but will take final as your average. If you like math and actually good at it take her class if not STAY AWAY. study hard for 1st exam.
If you don't have prior calculus experience it will be difficult. The class is fast paced and covers everything in Calc One except trig. Her practice homework and book problems are nothing like her test. Three tests, drops your lowest one, and if you final is higher than your test average she will replace your test grade with your final grade.
By far the hardest class I've taken. She goes over problems ridiculously fast on the board so you have no time to actually understand it, practice tests are nothing like the real ones, and homework doesn't help at all. If you have no background in calculus this class is extremely difficult and I would recommend a different professor if possible.
Bus Calc was the hardest class I took during my first semester. I had a C test average and somehow pulled a B in the class. Her test averages are in the 50s, but will take final as test average if you do better. I didn't open the book once and studied the reviews hard. Don't take Cathy if you don't have previous calc experience.
Cathy is challenging, but it is possible to receive an A. If you do all of the practice problems and really try to understand the material you can get an A. Also, the final isn't too difficult as it is departmental. You are better off taking Cathy for Buscalc than the other professors at Pitt.
Three midterms and a final. Midterms are EXTREMELY challenging (46%, 48%, 45%). She purposefully makes everything unnecessarily hard. Luckily, she doesn't make the final, and she lets your score replace your exam average. Other kids weren't so lucky. Course covers all of calc except trig. STAY AWAY, TAKE SOMEONE ELSE FOR BUSINESS CALC.
Hardest class I've ever taken. Cathy is the worst professor I've ever had. She goes through everything so quickly -- it's impossible to understand almost anything in class. You'll have to do A LOT of work outside of class in order to pass. Class average was about 50%-60% on each exam. Went to her office hours several times but she wasn't helpful.
Hardest class ever! Awful professor. I went to her office hours all the time. She races through the material, and erases what she's written on the board so quickly it's hard for you to write things down. The online homework doesn't relate to the practice exams/ exams at all. The textbook is straightforward unlike the exams she gives. Good luck!
Cathy goes through material very quickly. Overall the class was difficult for me. I took Calc in high school which helped me immensely in her class. If you did not take calc in high school, good luck. The tests are not easy. They are often very different from the problems she does in class or those on her practice exams. Final exam is key;)
I did not like Cathy, she wasn't super helpful when I went to her office hours and she talked down on you when she would explain things. However even if you have an F all year, if you do well on the final you can still pass the class. Also the textbook was a stupid purchase because we barley used it.
This class is the equivalent to giving a toddler a rocket ship and expecting them to be a rocket scientist four months later. Anyone giving her a good rating is falsely equating being tough to being a good teacher. On multiple occasions I was belittled in office hours.1st test: mean 41% median 36%. Beyond unclear with her grading for tests/overall.
She doesn't use blackboard so it's kind of confusing through email. Confirm that our first test average was a 41% for the entire class, and she showed disappointment when we didn't understand, instead of slowing things down. I dropped the class because I couldn't keep up. I never went to office hours because I felt uncomfortable with her attitude.
Took calc in senior year of HS, passed with A, still had trouble. Three inclass exams I got all Ds but I PROMISE the final was so much easier than any of her tests. Got a B in the class overall ( basically had to reteach myself everything before the final). She talks fast and her exams consist of combining 3-4 concepts in one question. Super hard.
Worst math teacher I've ever had. Lectures almost entirely spoken in theoretical terms and makes zero effort to make a survey calc course more accessible to non mathematics majors.
Failed all the midterms, but she allows you to replace your in term exam average with the grade on your final if you get a better grade. Got a B on the final and pulled a C in the class. DO NOT TAKE HER.
So here is the thing: her tests are way harder than her lecture. Her TA professors usually suck. She requires your attention, and wants to teach it her way. But, if you choose to go along with it, she is really willing to help. Going to her office hours helped so much, and talking after class helped a lot. If you put in the work, she will help.
The midterms will be very tough but they prepare you for the final. I only took pre-calc in high school and stilled passed her class. There is a quiz about every other week in recitation, the TAs grade them. Tests are graded by her and she is adamant about you visiting her if you don't do well. You can fail each midterm and still pass the final.
Do not take this professor unless you have extensive background knowledge of calc. Her lectures are confusing and made up of mostly proofs, and you won't be able to see what she's written on the board. Her tests also have nothing to do with what she says is on them.
Does not follow the departmental schedule. She will spend days on irrelevant materials. She also tests you on things she hasn't taught or quizzes you in really obscure manners. I had to rely on my ta a lot for the course. If you have the time to put into learning a lot yourself not a bad teacher. However if you want a strong math base do not.
Literally the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. She whispers, stands in front of the board so you can't see, and talks insanely fast. She teaches you nothing and our class averages on exams were always F's. Everything weighs on the final but you'll still be stressing over the class ALL the time. In shock that someone can be this awful.
Business calculus was hard, and it did not come off easily. Cathy is a tough grader, the exams are rough, but I feel much more confident after the class. The TAs will always suck for any math class. Visit her, and she will help you. Do the extra work, and you will do well. To get better at math, you have to do math, and she makes you do it.
Despite popular belief, I actually enjoyed Cathy's class. The class exam averages were extremely low, but a lot of the questions came straight from the many optional practice problems, which you should do. I also used the book to study but it is not a necessity. I had a pretty extensive calc background but felt that her class was pretty fair.
Somehow I passed her class and only attended half of the lectures and nearly failed every exam. If you end up with Cathy, just know that everything weighs on the final but you'll constantly worry and wonder about your grade in this class. I highly recommend you steer clear and try to get ANYONE but her.
Cathy is such a sweet human being, and she really cares about the success of her students. However, she often makes many mistakes in lecture, so it is a guessing game as to whether or not your notes are correct. Her tests are basically homework questions and are not hard. The only bad thing in this class is that you basically teach yourself.
I took buscalc with Cathy the first semester of my freshmen year. I am now a second-semester sophomore, forever haunted by the memories this class gave me. Cathy Duane-Lennard single-handedly demolished my GPA. She took away every inch of confidence I had in my ability to do math. If you're considering staying in her class, please, for me, drop it.
Pros: She's kind. She cares about your performance and understanding of the material. Her grading policy is very lenient and she tries to offer as much wiggle space as possible. A 76-89 is a B to her. Cons: She rushes through lectures incredibly quickly. Her commitment to her office hours is inconsistent. Not exactly thorough. Good luck, lol
She's a nice person, but her lectures are frustrating because she goes too quickly and does not explain her work well. She doesn't use BlackBoard either, and only sends info through emails which was inconvenient. I would not take this class again, and if possible I suggest taking a different professor.
I took a Business Calculus two times with this very same professor both times I had no choice but to take her because she was the only professor left in the university who was teaching this course which had a ton of seats open and that should say a lot . Failed both times consecutively because her teaching method is on unlearnable. Drop it now.
Her ability to teach the material is simply not there. The first 2 tests averages were 58%, and a 56%, and she was excited by that. Not only is there graded online homework but also her own practice problems so difficult the TAs can't even complete them. In her course there is also no curve or chance for extra credit. AVOID AVOID AVOID
Don't take her. I used to be so good at math and enjoy it, but Cathy "taught" in such a way that I never want to take another math course again. I studied so hard for every midterm and, like the rest of the class, still got a D at best. She doesn't use CourseWeb, talks too fast, and doesn't explain the work she does on the board. AVOID!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She is so sweet and full of passion. Three mid term exams and a final. They are easy to get good grades. She will curve. She is one of the best prof in Pitt. Take her class!
Not a business major or freshman, so can't speak for everyone, but Cathy was actually a great. She explains things well in lecture and takes time to review at the beginning of each class. It's really important to take notes and complete the practice problems, which take time but are worth it. The final is weighted heavy, but that's all calc at Pitt
This was the hardest class Ive ever taken. The professor flies through extremely difficult lectures. She leaves no room for error. The tests make up 70% of your grade. The tests are 6 involved questions that the professor gives you only 45 minutes to do by the time you get it. I got As in every class except this one. Find another professor.
Her test are kinda hard and lectures are sometimes very hard to follow while she is speaking very quietly. I do not advise skipping class because the examples she does are from previous exams and the practice problems are basically the same on the exams. If you do well on the final, better than what you have in the class, she will replace the grade
This is my second time taking business calculus. With another professor I got a 70% on my first exam. With Cathy, I got a 49%. Class average was a 56%. She rushes through material and never explains any problems thoroughly. Makes mistakes every class and doesnt clarify correct answer. Do NOT take this class. Youre better off taking Calc 1.
Business Calc with Duane-Lennard is very difficult. This was the hardest class I have taken so far in college. My average on her midterms were a 75%. Make sure to sit near the front because she talks quietly. Go to office hours for sure. She's a very caring and sweet lady and wants to see her students succeed. Final is basically grade replacement.
This class is very challenging so be prepared to work for your grade. However, Cathy is very kind and she honestly wants to see her students succeed. Go to office hours as much as possible and attend every recitation and lecture, and it'll be much easier to understand the content.
She is the absolute worst professor Ive ever encountered. She has an extremely annoying personality, does not use Blackboard or Canvas (in 2020!), spams your inbox with emails 3 times a week, cannot teach for her life. Anytime a student asks a question she repeats the same thing with a meaner voice until the student gives up and understands.
Very harsh grader. Midterm averages were in the 50%'s. You don't really ever know how well you're doing in the class because she doesn't use blackboard.
I got an F on her first exam, but she was very helpful and I ended the semester with a solid A. She does care A LOT about her students, particularly the ones who come for help. Although it is a hard class, it is hard to fail her class because 1) she drops the lowest test grade 2) VERY lenient grading scale. I overall enjoyed the class!
This woman is a gem, she was certainly one of the hardest classes, however I was never a math wiz. She put so much into this class, even when we went online she was so helpful. Her office hours are thee only reason I passed the class. Her exams don't really correlate to the HW, that is why you need to get some one on one time with her.
I cannot tell you how badly you should avoid Cathys class. She rushes through everything, you basically have to teach yourself. Im sorry, but the fact that she gets excited over a 60% class average on an exam should be clear enough evidence that you should avoid her class.
I failed my first test after not paying attention/taking notes during lectures the first few weeks and got As on the next two. Do her practice problems and go to office hours when needed. Multiple times she stayed past her office hour time to go over problems with me. She also doesn't use Canvas and emails everything which is tough but I love her
Professor Cathy is very sweet, but that is as far as that extends. The webwork assignments are good for practice. That is it. Practice problems she gives sets you up for her exams, but she sends sooo many as if you do not have any classes other than calculus. I definitely recommend taking another professor that will teach you word problems as well.
Prof is very nice but the class is not good. She gives way too many practice problems, the tests are much harder than the homework, and yet the tests are the majority of the grade. You have to put in a lot of effort to pass.
Bruh shes a nice person and is always available in office hours for help, which I recommend going to. But the exams are all you have for your grade and they are much harder than the homework. I would say try for a different prof.
Choose anyone else for this class. The exams are much harder than everything else. The fact that she does not display any grades and you are left to wonder what grade you have all semester is ridiculous.
She's very nice but if you're not mathematically inclined, don't take this class. Exams are much harder than the homework and you don't know how you're doing in the class because she doesn't use Canvas. I should've dropped this class when I had the chance.
DO NOT. I repeat DO NOT take this woman's class. She will think the 55% class average is impressive. This class is maddening.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR'S CLASS. this is actually the most hilarious and ridiculous class i have ever taken. she thinks that a 55 percent average is good for the class. she also has to be corrected on her problems because she doesn't even know how to do them. i am actually so frustrated with this class, i do not recommend. she seems nice tho
Overall, she is a nice person but I will never forget her explicitly stating, "It should be my goal to make things as difficult as possible," mind you, this is an Algebra class. The exams are absolutely nothing like what we did in class and if you haven't taken calculus previously I would not at all recommend her as a professor, choose someone else
STAY AS FAR AWAY FROM THIS CLASS AS POSSIBLE. RUN IN THE OTHER DIRECTION. She is the worst professor I've ever had. Her teaching style is beyond confusing. She doesn't seem to care whether her students pass or not (which btw, we're NOT passing!! The average test score was 57% and she was celebrating this!!) Horrible, horrible, HORRIBLE teacher.
Lectures make no sense and only grades are exams. The layout of the class is extremely confusing and I never knew what was happening. The whole class was failing (Exam average in 40's/50's) but this was apparently good. You're better off learning the material outside of class and not attending lectures.
She's nice but truly bad at teaching. She jumps around from section to section way too quickly and her lectures are just straight off of the notes she sends. on top of that, her only grades are exams and she exclusively emails everything instead of using canvas. You have no idea what your grade is until the end of the semester. do not take her.
Stay far away. She is so unclear about everything. You might as well just teach yourself
awful. read the other reviews
This class makes me cry myself to sleep
Catherine is the hardest person to talk to and learn any information from. All of her lectures are done on a whiteboard where she speaks 1000MPH. no information is absorbed ever even though we the students are good. WebWorks arent useful. Practice problems don't get done because they arent graded.
One of the most confusing teachers Ive ever had. Doesnt even bother to double check if we understand the material before moving on to the next topics. Her grading is the most strictest Ive ever seen. I need this class to pass but Im failing it so do not take her as your teacher unless you want to cry.
This was the worst class I've ever taken. She grades off of 3 exams that she spent about 20 minutes in total teaching. She never answered any of the emails I sent her. Honestly the best day of class was when she got into a minor car accident because she never showed up (She was fine). Please for your own sake take a different class.
- Homework is not turned in but does it otherwise you will get no practice for exams. - Very communicative about the current grades of students. - Slow on emails, but gives class time for questions - SDoesn't worry about grades that much, at the beginning most students failed the first exam but she wasn't upset or worried.
Talks about class averages after every exam. Cares more about growth than grades. Homework is "practice" that is not turned in, but if you do not do it, you will not be ready for the exams. Very kind, caring, understanding, and supportive. All grading is on exams. Very clear about grading scale, and grade based on scrap work not the final answers.
One of my favorite professors. I've never been good at math, but she makes it a lot easier. She gives a ton of practice problems which are just like the test material and will go over them with you as long as you ask. She has extended her office hours multiple times to ensure I am comfortable with the material.
Cathy is my Australian queen and reminds me of my grandma but is probably the worst professor out there. She is honestly a gem but cant teach math for her life. The only thing you are graded on is your tests and they are all like 6 questions and no MC. Basically if you get one wrong you are screwed. I only did well bc I remembered things from HS.
Very nice and has lots of office hours, but very unorganized. Sends emails with notes and class is just doing different problems. Dont know your grade until end of semester. Only 2 exams and a final make up your grade. Do practice problems to prepare for exams.
She was a really nice lady who loves math but just CANT teach it. Since she refused to use canvas you are overloaded with emails of her hand written notes. Its very unorganized, no textbook, and she didnt answer my emails. Your only grades are 100 point tests that have only 6-8 questions. If your not naturally gifted at math you stand no chance.
One of the worst math teachers I have ever had. She's a very nice person and cares about students, but that's about all I can say. Her exams are nothing like the practice problems assigned and is so scatterbrained in class. I found it very hard to learn. She said our class average which was a 42% was "wonderful." Literally take any other professor.
For your own sanity, do not take.
Literally just withdrew from this class. So awful. Save yourself.
grades will be very low on most exams, ESPECIALLY the first one. you won't know how you're doing in the class until it's too late to raise your grade, and asking the professor for input on that won't get you anywhere. she almost seemed to take pride in having her students out of the loop or confused, whether it be with the material or their grades
She was a sweet lady, just not a good professor. I wouldn't say I'm bad at calculus, but she made everything so complicated for no reason. She also says she does not believe in curves, but curves the final grade because a handful of students always fail her class. Also didn't help that the TA didn't understand and had to reteach himself.
She sits in front of the whiteboard and covers everything she writes, and barely explains anything she does. The exams are nothing like any practice problems or webwork assigned homework. She doesnt curve... even if the class average is 38. She doesnt have the ability to understand that the students taking her classes dont know everything she does.
Very difficult class that I would not advise anyone to take. Tests were borderline impossible, hw was useless, and the ridiculous amount of practice problems she expects you to complete for no credit was absurd. There are NO grades and when I tried to ask her about my grade before withdrawing she could not give me an answer. Avoid at all costs.
So surprised her rating isn't worse. This class is just absolutely horrible.
Terrible awful instructor
Dropped her class after the first lecture. Whispers in a room with 50+ people. Jumps around and was hard to follow. If you can, take Dr. Carl Wang Erickson instead, he is really good!
Practice problems and resources are available to students. By practicing on your own and showing up to class for lectures and you will be successful on the quizzes and the tests. Otherwise, this professor is very nice and helpful whenever you are stuck during a test/quiz or with practice homework.
The worst professor. Your entire grade is basically exams, and her exams are extremely difficult for no reason. She doesn't give you lecture notes or homework problems that help prepare- majority of her students fail them. If you ask a question, her answers are very condescending and make you feel even dumber. DO NOT TAKE HER!
Cathy is a very nice person, but her class is very very hard and she is not the best lecturer. Tests were unbelievably hard and only 3 take up 50% of your grade. At least she drops one but so little grades make life tough. I struggled as I am not the best math guy, but she is very willing to help and has office hours after every class.
Extremely difficult, take a different professor. You're only graded on three exams, which are insanely hard. Class averages were not passing, and there was no curve. She replaces your final exam grade as your final grade overall if it's higher than your average on the 3 tests, but she does not prepare you well for the final.
the class itself is super fast paced even for someone who's taken two calc classes prior. three in term tests plus a final, just review everything beforehand, she's a fair grader and goes by your work. As a person, I loved Cathy. she was a super sweet woman id love to see again
A lot of people hated her and said it was the worst class ever and shes the worst, but honestly it's really not that bad. Just learn the optional homeworks (which take a long time but the only way you will do well on the exams) and do the WebWorks. She's also a really nice person and will help you a lot during her office hours.
This is the harsh truth. Not accessible outside of class, frequently ignores students. Moves at a rapidly through complicated material. Does not use canvas, emails all course material. Due dates repeatedly change, Outdated lecture notes, syllabus gives no info on class. Does not create an environment for student success. Lazy and needs to retire.
The homework never helped you prepare for exams, you HAD to do the practice problems in order to know what was going on. 3 exams and 1 final, she dropped one of the exams when I had taken her class. Show all of your work she will give you the most points she can. Very fast paced, never responded outside of class to emails. Don't suggest her class.
Constantly having to correct her on simple errors, takes off random points on homeworks, and not willing to meet with you outside of her office hours (even if you have another class). The only way you will do good in this class is if you already know what you're doing.
She is not well organized, her lectures are boring, she got too behind the course and cramed 4 chapters in her last regular test when I took her. She is an insanely grader. She is inisitent of making everything related to her class as difficult as possible. She is quite simply employed by Pitt to turn Business Majors into communication majors.
Dropped half a semester in the fall because I knew it wouldn't end well. Lectures are confusing and she goes so fast. Calc is already hard but ppl who took it in hs said she makes it even more confusing. If you're mathy you'll be fine, but avoid if you don't want a C. Doesn't use Canvas at all. Don't know grade until the end. Homework is hard too
I would recommend her if you've taken calculus in the past. Three in-term exams where the lowest one gets dropped or replaced if your final score is higher. Doesn't assign a lot of homework, but must do the optional homework to do well in her exams. In-term exams can be tricky, but she prepares you well for the departmental final.
Pretty unstructured class and disorganized lecture style. Not engaging just copied stuff down. Do the practice problems and look at notes from lecture because they are similar to exam. People are dramatic tho, shes not horrible, they just never opened the textbook or took the time. Use recitation if confused.
Class is utterly terrible. Boring lectures that go at extremely fast pace, even if their are 4 minutes left in class she tries to jam in another few questions for no good reason. Gives a ton of "optional" homework that you practically need to do to do well in the class. However, she also gives a ton of useless mandatory homework at the same time.
Goes extremely fast for no reason and jams problems in at the end and goes over time. She doesn't have our grades posted and doesn't tell you when asked. Exams are 50% of your grade, not curved, and no calculators even though the averages are C- or worse. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS
Very Sweet lady but should not be a professor. Sends all notes through email and never posts a single thing on canvas! Sloppy handwriting for all lectures and could not hear her or understand her. Even when you ask for help it seems like she is helping but it indeed is not. Class averages for exams were never above 60. Not prepared for final. NOOO.
I strongly recommend NOT taking her class if you do not already understand college-level algebra. Her lectures are spent writing examples on the board with little to no explanation of how/why she got to the next step or answer she did. Homework is assigned but not graded, so your final grade solely depends on attendance combined with your 4 exams.
She is a very nice lady. But this class is very fast paced, we would go through five sections a class during the beginning of the semester(the class is 50 mins). The homework is on WebWork which is sucks. The TA was was hard to understand and he explains things in a very difficult way. Overall would never take this class again.
Lectures were fast-paced and not well explained. Read the textbook to understand the concepts. The practice problems she gives you are very similar to the exams so focus heavily on those and you will be good. Found recitation not helpful. My success came from studying the book and practice problems on my own. But overall a very nice lady.
Im sorry but I absolutely hated her and her class. You're graded essentially just based on three exams so if you do bad on one, you're pretty much already in trouble. She never responds to emails and she just starts doing problems in lec without actually explaining them step by step. Maybe a sweet lady outside of class, but pls avoid her for class.
I have never disliked a teacher more than Cathy. She's fine as a person, but her lectures are boring, she's unclear, and never properly explains her work. I approached her one time with a question and she appeared annoyed and was passive aggressive when explaining. Avoid her at all costs if you want to pass the class. If you do take her, tutoring!
Lectures are long and boring, and she's blocking the board 75% of the time. Grading criteria/ curves made no sense, but she gives good partial credit and drops one exam. Overall, a really bad teacher but seems like a fine person and is somewhat helpful when you ask questions.
DO NOT TAKE. She is not a good teacher, blocks the board, and is unclear about grading. You will have to teach yourself from the textbook. She doesn't explain well and uses abstract examples that don't make sense in business calc. The only redeeming qualities are that she gives decent partial credit and does drop an exam.
Her lectures are not the most helpful, but if you use the textbook and watch youtube videos you'll be fine. She doesn't use canvas which is very confusing... everything is sent via email. She doesn't care about low average and literally thinks 60% is a good grade. You can survive tho, but I'd only recommend taking her class as a last resort.
The only way to succeed in the class is if you already have a somewhat good background in calc. To get a good grade you need to do all of the optional practice problems for each topic, which can take hours. The average of the tests in the class was 68%, but she did drop your lowest in-term test. Terrible class and I do not recommend it!
Literally one of the worst teachers I have ever had, all she does is block the white boards and make generalizations that never apply to any math concepts. (This woman spent 15 minutes of class time yapping about birds) She just puts problems up on the board and doesn't explain how to do them, then erases them before you can copy it down.
Worst math teacher I have ever had in my whole life. Consistently blocks the board, doesn't explain well. The whole class is her having fun with math while you copy down notes that you dont even understand. Students are consistently correcting her and after noticing her mistake, she yelps out "oh!" then stares for 10 seconds. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS
If I could travel back in time and prevent myself from taking her, I would. Lectures aren't very helpful and sometime leave you more confused then before you learned it. Writing is most of the time hard to understand and she talks very quiet during lecture. Review sessions were little to no help. She admitted to making our tests harder than finals.
She's a very nice person, but as a professor Cathy cannot apply any calculus concepts to actual problems you're see on exams. I only took this because it was the last professor available and within a month, the class was 1/3 its' original size. If you're not comfortable with calculus topics, I do NOT recommend taking this course with her.
I truly think people are too hard on her! She drops your lowest exam grade and will even replace your in class exam scores with your final exam grade if you do better. I struggled at first but once I started to do all the practice problems I did much better on exams. However if you don't understand the material, lecture will be difficult to follow.
its been the 3rd week and im already looking at dropping. she goes way too fast and somehow goes overtime while going fast and does not explain how to solve problems and expects you to know what you're doing. hw is the only way to "learn" but if you did calc you might be fine, but this is not the teacher for u if you need to be lectured on precalc.
Do NOT take business calc with this professor! She took what should've been an easy class and turned it into an absolute nightmare. I lost many, many points on tests from solving things in a different way than she wanted, or having different notation than she wanted, even if I had the right answer in the end. I have no idea how I pulled off a B+
please do not take her at any cost, she is an awful lecturer, making even the most simple concepts seem convoluted and confusing. I do not think she taught me a single thing, i watched youtube videos for all of the concepts. She did, however, let you drop one of the three midterms, and her office hours were relatively helpful.
I will NEVER in my life take her again. I dropped this class and im doing calc in the summer and it is so much easier than whatever the hell i did in her class. she goes extremely slow and then goes fast over topics that are harder, and does not align her lecture with the homework. publicly embarrassed me in class once. just dont do it.
DO NOT TAKE HER!!!! She is the most confusing professor. Glosses over hard topics that to her you "should know". She doesn't explain anything especially when she does things completely different to the book. I'm taking her currently and this first exam was the worst experience of my life. If you take her...good luck
Your whole entire grade depends on 4 tests. No extra credit, no curves. Do not waste your time; choose another professor for this class.
ABSOLUTELY AWFUL. DO NOT TAKE. I had seen the bad reviews & chose to ignore them - don't make the same mistake. The class is business calc over 2 semesters and was awful - half of our class dropped. Does not teach clearly and tests do not reflect hw or classwork - significantly harder. Class average on exams are failing and she blames students.
I took calc before this class so it was easy to follow, I scored high on most tests. Show up and pay attention to the lectures and you will do good. Try and get Xander for your recitation teacher, he is very helpful. The practice problems are most similar to the questions on the tests. She drops the lowest test score.
Wow. Where do I even start. If your reading this do not take her. I have never had a worse professor. Mind you this was ALGEBRA (an easy level math course that she turned into a nightmare). RUN. The final was the easiest of all the exams (it was graded and created by the math department rather then her). Last thing why has Pitt not fired her yet?
