Really nice, fair marker, relaxed style
the best instructor i ever had in a biology course, easy on marking, and helpful
Nice teacher, but hard tester
good notes, good explainations, weekly quizzes or quizzes every other week...
I totally disagree. She is in the top 3 of the worst instructors I have had. Her
she can b ur best teacher or 2nd best but not any lower
By far one of the best instructors I've ever had - and funny too!
Horrid.Only those fluent in bio.will pass.Barely.
extremely bad. she dropped 3 chapters on us a day and a half before the final,
very nice, spunky, but notes are hard to read and tests aren't easy.
warning: doesn't like teaching bio
grumpy.Can't teach.Bad attitude.Bad tests.
hard class..especially for arts students..but you need it for ubc .she was good!
one of the gems in teaching bio, good exams but tricky multiple choices...
poor teaching style.overhead and no explanation

gives funny personal anecdotes about her family, flexible with marking
very disorganized, hard tests. bad notes
Despite being one of the nicest teachers ever, she got the worst notes ! her hand writing is horrible and you can hardly read her over head notes! You either gotta listen to her lectures or copy of her over head! you cannot do both things at same time...
extremely easy teacher..study & get an A
Does not know how to instruct but knows the material very well herself. Avoid at all costs!
Entertaining but goes way off topic too much.
Crazy note taking - don't expect to be able to listen and write at the same time. She is a sweet lady, v. funny, v. nice. Love her to pieces, but tests are too hard, partially due to huge amount of detailed material. V. helpful & generous w/ her time.
May be the best! Her exams and quizzes are not easy. But study her notes and you'll do well. Lots and lots of notes, but it's all worth it: Everything you need to know is in her notes...no need for a text book. I got my first and only A+ ever with her!
HARD quizz & exams, detailed and in-depth questions, I was never able to score in fill-in-da-blanks! Very interesting class but heavy note taking. Sit in the front so that u can recog her hand writings which is VERY VERY useful in exams!!!
Great teacher. Tests are a bit hard BUT everything is in the notes so if you are not lazy, easy to do well. Also lets you correct midterms for an extra 5%! on the test. That really adds up! Two easy assignments also given which are basically free marks.
lots & lots of good notes....even tho her quizzes & exams are very hard....but basically, she likes to talk about her family & is very flexible with exams & assignments...nice in overall
What a treat! Here's a prof who actually cares about each individual and looks you in the eye. Her door is always open! She tells you at the start of term and repeats "don't write down all of the notes" - take her seriously and catch some great
horrid.does not know how to effectively deliver complex info in an understandable manner.try a diff prof-not her.I studied my ass off and really learnt nothing
nice lady...VERY tough though...study hard, and if you fail the first exam....DROP THE CLASS! save yourself from wasting the time trying to bring your mark up...you won't!
If you want a HIGH mark, DON'T take her class. She's very nice and approachable, but a HORRIBLE marker. I was getting an 'A' in lab tests and a 'D' on her tests!!! Shows you how hard her marking is. Her overheads are sloppy, but great to study from.
fabulous woman, fabulous teacher. don't try to write down her notes word for word, her exams are difficult but not impossible, she lets you correct them for extra marks, tells stories about her family to allow people to catch up in writing off overheads.
Good teacher, very nice. Interesting stories to go with lectures. I recommend her. She has midterms and some quizzes.
couldn't ask for a better teacher! she is a great person and REALLY cares about her students. her midterms are fair and her notes are gold. tells the funniest stories in the class :-) gotta love her
Although she is a very nice teacher. She has very hard mid-terms. If you wanna pass this course I would take somebody else. Be prepared to write tons of notes. The whole hour is copying notes. Half of the class is either failing or dropped the course.
She's a good teacher, and easy on the eyes too ;)
She is a nice teacher, but her mid-terms are very hard. You'd better choose another teacher if you want to get a high mark.
Her notes suck, I still have to make my own notes from the textbook. Her midterms are hard, seems like she's obsessed w/ evolution or soemthing. She's a fun person w/ lotsa funny stories but if u want a high mark, go look for anotehr bio teacher.
Midterms are hard, avoid taking her if you want a high mark. I did learn some stuff in class but would've learned more with another teacher. Some questions on her tests aren't even in her notes! Read the textbook to study
She is the most helpful prof. i've ever had. Makes time to help if you need it, and responds to e-mails right away. Her exams are a little difficult, but all the stuff is in her notes. Focuses on making you understand concepts rather than memorization.
Wonderful teacher. Very kind, approachable, reasonable and entertaining. Keeps lectures enjoyable (despite tedious notes) and really cares about her students. Tests are rather difficult, so you have to make sure you're precise with your answers.
unprofessional and gossipy
Very nice but excessive notes (ever hear of webct? You can post your lecture notes online, that way we can listen to your lecture instead of frantically writing overhead notes) and tests are extremely difficult, lots of essay type questions.
I'm an A biology student and I ended up getting a C+ in her class. Her tests are hard & some q's aren't in her notes, u have 2 read the text. Puts up way 2 many notes, some r pointless facts. When I asked her q's in office, she wasn't helpful in answering
she is a nice person but my god the midterm and at the end the final, ALL BRUTAL!!!!!!
does not have the skills nor the commitment to teach the class. very unclear notes that is next to impossible to read. jokes around during class and usually go off topic from the course material. I'd stay away from this teacher if I were you.
I had no recent experience in biology and made it out of her course with an A-. I have never worked so hard in my life, but it was rewarding. The level of difficulty in this course has nothing to do with her, she's amazing! SO helpful.
Very disorganized. She wrote up the 2nd midterm on the same morning that we were writing it! Her notes aren't very clear. If you want go have a good grade, I'd recommend registering for someone else; otherwise, your GPA will drop because of her.

She is a good teacher. Read your text but tests are mostly from the notes. She will always slow down the overhead for a slow note taker. She allows reschedualing of exams. All around very understanding and helpfull. Great teacher but a fairly hard marker.
For an introductory level course, she sure socks it to you! I didn't find her particularly approachable nor did I find her helpful. I would strongly recommend finding another instructor if you want to enjoy your Biology course!
Intelligent teacher with a fine sense of humour. Very helpful, though often a bit pressed for time. Interested in the material and it shows. Slows down to let class catch up notes, fills the time with often amusing anecdotes. Fair marker on tests.
I thought she was quite good in teaching. She is really nice and if you pay attention, get all the notes, and really understand the material, then you should do pretty good. I'm an average student and i'm at a b, but i do study a lot.
I like her, if you copy all her notes and look over it before a quiz or a test, you will do fine....she is really funny and nice. I like her class...too bad she not teaching 1216..I'll take it for sure.
the difficulty is in the course, not the teacher.she is very patient and very helpful, and she's a riot.cares about her students and remembers more than their names.she lets you do corrections on exams for an extra 5% and provides a lab review.
She is great! Super nice! Easy to understand! Helpful! A great teacher!
She is super funny, so going to her class was fun.
her midterms are hard but she gives you time for corrections up to two marks! thats really good cuz its an extra 5%! she used powerpoint this term which was good cuz i heard she has messy writin but you still have to write fast cuz there are lots of notes
You'll do well in her class if you show up and take good notes. Though it's tough keeping up with her lecture and note taking at the same time. Read ahead on the text and you'll do great.
glass is awesome, her notes are quite overwhelming. Her class is great for preperation for university. Stories about her family pure comdey i enjoyed her class alot.
Nice teacher, funny teacher, but it's dissappointing that she will not FIND OUT the answers to questions she doesn't know the answer to in class. She just ends it with "Good question!", but never cares to go FIND OUT for us. It's a sign that the teacher doesn't care to keep learning themselves.
good pace, very helpuful and doesn't mean to make anything difficult for us
Notes given by powerpoint, first midterm not as difficult as second (2nd is harder). Quizzes are simple just study the main points and your good. When need help on hw assignments very willing to help and will help very approachable and FUNNY!
her tests are extremely hard. quizzes are alright. NOT organized and thats why she just rushed through a bunch of chapters so she can finish on time. expects very specific answers on midterms and 2nd one is HARD can't wait for final and pleaaase go and see her office
Started out really well, entertaining, approachable, helpful, fair exam and quizzes. Pace has increased over the term, and the exams and assignments are now more difficult and unclear. Now impatient with questions and does not want to help struggling students, very sarcastic. Can't recommend.
this teacher is so disorganized which clearly has impacted her teaching. Her tests are really hard and dont even get me started on her notes.i got the worst lab intructor kathy hanson. She didnt help with the labs and is really mean.If u want to pass bio 1115 with a c please take this teacher.
She nice and all but her tests are hard. She really doesnt mean to make things difficult they just happen to turn out that way.
Our class was 4 chapters behind.. the week before our final exams!!!! She is very unorganized. All her notes are on power point, so she speeds right through chapters, not stopping to answer anyones questions. Her midterms are very hard. Kathy hansen is the lab istructer, VERY low average...SHE SUCKS
you never get reasonable marks in tests even you are pretty sure that you have covered most of the details in the answer, especially for essay questions. Quite a number of the students dropped out which should raise the average marks, but lab average is 61.8% and lecture average is 22/40...
She tends to get off topic alot in class, enjoys talking about her family. She can be unclear with what will be on her exams. If she says you don't need to know something because it wont be on the exam, KNOW IT! Because the majority of the time it will be on it.
very disorganized...gets off from topics all the time...fun, but don't think that's how people learn...bad marker as well...even if u draw done many important points already...it's still not enough...i love bio, but not the teacher...will avoid her next time...
i'm sorry, if we're supposed to rate her on how funny her family stories are and how nice she is, then she'd get a smiley, but on her teaching.. her marks are just as low her class averages. a very harsh marker indeed and with her talking and us taking hand-cramping notes, it doesn't make for a good class. a great gpa dropper and bio disinterester.
Bad teacher...no matter how many facts you write down its not good enough, 10 points doesnt mean 10 marks, shes always looking for something else, she wants answers to be specific without wording the question properly. i got an A in bio 1215 and a c- in catherines 1115 class
A hilarious and interesting instructor that would actually make you want to come to class. As long as you study and have a positive attitude, you'll do fine in her class. She's cool!
Catherine is really nice and a very fun teacher. Everything is great except she marks really hard and she tends to give you more information than you really need to know for the course. =p
She's such a great woman, but tough teacher. She throws too much information at you without connecting the points. I am an A student, but I struggled with this course. Huge GPA dropper.
Nice enough person but not a great teacher. She expects way too much from a first year group and definately has her favorite students!! If you are not one of them don't expect to find help from her. I would NOT suggest taking her class, she has a rep for klling your GPA.
very funny one here, cares for students. overall a good teacher BUT hard on MT and quizzes. she does not tell you what she expects, and she does favor in students. too much note taking.
I'm not a science student and i love her. She is ORGANIZED, FRIENDLY, PATIENT, CARING, FUNNY. She gives us studyguide-very effective; midterms&finals-same format(mc, c&c,fill in the blank, short answers);Quiz helps us to prepare for midterm; you NEVER GET BORED; she prepares you for midterm. i really recommend her- you dun know ASK and try your BEST
Catherine's aura has such a refreshing feeling. No matter how badly I did in this course, I loved to come to class more and more to learn;everything she teaches, she teaches with care for her students, and is a wonderful lady overall. Her teaching style is not for people who are lazy or careless. She leaves her office door open and loves helping.
Excellent teacher for biology..!! You never get bore in her class.. teaches with great care!!
Best prof in the school, makes sense out of the long and confusing textbook, always helpful. Only problem is she talks about her family a lot....
Very anally focussed on evolution, she rambles on and on in class about stuff not on the test! Truly does'nt prepare you for later courses in biology/university. Study the simple things in her course and not on main important topics like glycolysis/Krebs cycle, cells, division, metabolic pathwaysetc Know these topics half assed dont waste your time
she is a wonderful professor and makes sense out of everything. she examens you directly from what she taught.
a very fun teacher, but goes off topic a lot. I learned a lot from her although it didn't show up on my marks as I was often away from class. If you go to class, it's easy! Great teacher wish she was teaching in the fall.
Catherine is an absolute gem! She is totally charismatic, tells entertaining/funny stories, and can incite an intrest in Biology even in the most indifferent students. A+ in her class, and I'm an arts major (never taken Bio before!). Definately recommend her!
If you read the textbook, ask questions and are committed in doing well you will do great! I was hoping for a C+ and I got an A! She's the best bio teacher hands down!
Very funny prof! Tends to go off topics alot talking about her kids, BUT she tries to make the material simple as possible. i think shes the BEST bio prof @ langara, if u are good at memorizing the material you will definitly get an easy A, afterall Bio is all about MEMORIZATION!!
She love biology and cares about her students...if you keep up with the notes and read the text book...you will do fine..just make sure you understand the concepts! She is fine to give you extra help!
She's very talkative n fun in class. She's also smart n loves her students. As long as u attender her classes n understand (memorize) the materials, i don't see a much of problem.
1st class bio instructor! Love her explanation & ways of memorizing certain processes. Her class is always fun & entertaining! Juz study her notes & attend her class. U'll do well in the course!
She is a very picky marker and talks too much.
Great teacher. Friendly and helpful. She's always got time to help you understand a concept if you go to her. Funny and witty. has good ways of explaining things and stories to help you remember things. really nice person and really good teacher. Very interesting class!
horrible, knows he material but talks on about **** that is not important. Willing to help, but not really too halpful if you know what i mean. id rather take another prof.
Awesome teacher, really knows her stuff. I had a very fun term learning Biology. Thanks Catherine!!!
She is a good teacher!!!
no good
She is Great!
She's obviousely very passionate about Biology, but she is ineffective at teaching it to students. She doesn't answer her own questions which are in the handouts she gives, often because she gets too excited and moves to fast. VERY PICKY MARKER! Dont bother buying the textbook, she wants answers from her lectures, which are very specific.
very annoying with her life/family stories irrelevant to class, time waster, were always behind in theory for labs making labs were difficult. unfair marker, not because marks "hard" but because she rushes through her lectures in the last minutes and expects students to answer in her words.
Great prof!! So nice.. really cares about her students. OBVIOUSLY u need to STUDY if you want a good mark like ANY class.. ya, we're all looking for an easy A.. but cmon guys. Catherine is a great prof- take her!
she pretends to be fair and nice, by saying that she will pass you if you have 48%, but she's just lazy. she reads through her notes without explaining, and the rest of the time shes late and talks bs about her life. If she cared about her students she'd at least make an effort to answer her own questions in her notes and fill in the blanks..
being NICE PERSON and being GOOD TEACHER are two different things, she might be nice, but way too disorganized to be a good teacher. rushed through 3 chapters in the last week of class.. when other teachers in other sections had a week to spare before final
Catherine is a great prof! She tells you exactly what will be on the exams/quizzes so if you pay attention in lectures, nothing on the exam will be a surprise. She's also very helpful and easy to talk to. If you are confused about the material, emailing her is the best way to get in touch as she responds very quickly. Changed my perspective on bio
Best professor ever. She's funny and has an interesting way of explaining concepts. Ignore the other negative comments about her because seriously, she's a really good professor who knows her stuff!
i like catherine she's cool and wow so smart. make sure you attend, and sacrifice your good pretty writing to keep up.. she's fast. i didnt use the book and did well. the study guide in the library was pretty useful too. first half of the course is pretty straight forward but it gets hard FAST when u get to around cell respiration and photosyn.
She's super fun, love her stories about her experiences, and kids. She orally gives you the notes, so WRITE FAST, but she doesn't mind repeating herself. Great teacher!
She is anything but boring, who keeps you engaged in class with her stories and makes you understand/appreciate the importance of human biology. Talks fast, so, write faster. Wouldn't recommend skipping class, as the course content is quite heavy. Tests and quizes based on lecture notes as well as lab exams based solely on lab manual.
Goes through notes too quickly, says she is fair and such - I had to rewrite my midterm due to illness. The test was about 20x harder than the in class one, which would be fair if I had missed it just because, but I had a medical reason... Talks about personal life, skims through notes. Read your book, it's really helpful, but she isn't.
I was a little skeptical at first, but once you get past the initial weirdness, she's pretty awesome. She's funny and easy to approach; I find her quirkiness to be really endearing and it makes classes a lot easier to show up for. She's accommodating and always makes time to speak to students outside of class. Recommend!
I advise you to attend every class because she talks really fast. Her lectures are interesting but she requires alot of details on her exam (e.g. short answers long answers)
tells very interesting stories. Is the perfect instructor for the foundations of health course due to her vast knowledge and experience from having four kids (1 set of twins) and her work abroad. I really like how she tries to engage the class in discussion
Awesome instructor. She is very specific about what she wants to see for the answers on the exam. Her classes are extremely helpful. She is very eccentric (in a funny way) but knowledgeable. I did poorly on the first midterm but I sort of realized that I have to treat every question as a long answer question and explain as detailed as I can :)
she gives out copies of her powerpoint slides but you have to write your own notes based on what she says in class. often goes off topic about where she travels..topics are interesting but class is kinda boring. quiz on vocab every week(written) and tests have m/c short and long answers
She sucks at staying on topic, and her tests are quite hard. Study her notes WELL and you'll do fine. Ignore her stories because they are hardly related to the material being taught and are just distracting. She insults students when they are not in class.
I really enjoy Catherine's class. Although she gets off topic a lot and talks quite fast, her notes are very helpful. You really have to pay attention in class and take notes as you go along. But as long as you do so, you'll do really well. I recommend her class. Very entertaining, and informative.
This teacher is one of the best i have ever had. She was extremely helpful in every way and she made her lectures interesting. I just showed and interest in the course and studied a little and got a First class grade. Highly Recommended
LOVE CATHERINE! She is an inspiring, hilarious woman; you will have a hard time falling asleep during her lectures. Exams are tough but definitely possible (she offered a chance to improve our marks post-midterm) and her stories are wildly entertaining and RELEVANT to what she's teaching. Uses examples from her life to reinforce the material.
Best teacher I have ever had. If you ever get the chance to take a course with Catherine, I strongly encourage you to do so.
Allowed my class to correct midterms for some bonus marks. She gets off topic very easily, but always gets back to the subject. She's also easy to talk to.
Her classes were interesting at first, but the material becomes dry. Definitely need to put in some effort to do well in her class. 1 paper, quizzes every week, 2 test (multiple choice, definitions, short answers and 1 long answer)She talks fast so make sure you have a buddy !
Don't take her if you don't know much about Biology. She is a hard marker. Very passionate for Biology, she's been teaching for a longtime, she expects you to know your material. She goes really fast. Gets off topic really easily. Try and avoid her if possible.
She is actually very helpful, but she expects a lot from students. If you study biology only by memorizing or you haven't taken biology in a while, you'll not survive her class. When writing exams, especially definitions and long answers, write as detailed as possible. Quizzes every week, 3 assignments given near the finals, no research papers.
She prints out all the handouts for you, but there are many questions in there that you have to fill in. A bit disorganised when teaching and talks fast, so reading ahead really helps. Quizzes every week. If you get a quiz with only one question on it, congrats! She wants you to study biology as linked concepts, not just a bunch of facts.
It's was my first semester at Langara and I'm so glad that Catherine was my teacher or else I'd be doing pretty poorly in class. Herself and her stories are definitely interesting and relevant to the topics. Sometimes she plays videos (sometime even ones that have nothing to do with the course - just to get us interested) which is a good thing.
Ouch. Nice enough lady with interesting stories but notes are nowhere near helpful for tests. Calculus is easier than the midterms she gives. Extremely dry lectures and inconsistent marking. Don't know what all the other ratings on here were about. Avoid if at possible and definitely don't take this as an elective! (0.00 hurts your GPA)
Yes, she expects a lot, but has great real-world experience in her field. She is also democratic and fair - she takes the best of each pair of quizzes to count for marks, gives opportunity to earn bonus 5% by handing in midterm corrections, and marked fairly easy on project and paper. It's a lot of work, but good course if subject interests you.
Her tests are brutal. VERY VERY hard marker. You have to study A LOT. And make sure its every little detail, because if you dont, you get marks off. She is a very nice teacher, and helps when she can.
off topic alot during class
Goes off topic a lot!! prints off notes for the class which is to be filled out during lecture. VERY HARD MIDTERMS, but is forgiving since she gives a 5% boost on each midterm for corrections. Very nice and helpful with lots of interesting stories!
I had this teacher for my first biology class and it almost discouraged me to ever take bio again, luckily I took Anoush's class and Aced that one. Her powerpoint slides are filled with irrelevant images from google and the little information. Thats why her quizzes are so hard, she prides herself on poorly worded/written and unclear questions.
talks too fast. is cool personality wise.
She's really good and knows what she's talking about.goes off topic and tells you about her life stories which makes the course more interesting because it is quite a boring lecture. Her exams are EASY!!! they're all in the notes that she gives you. So if you come to class and read/study her notes, you'll be fine! But put more effort for termpaper!
An extremely hard marker. Her questions are very unclear and as others have said you have to write every single detail to get any marks. Her questions are not very relevant to life e.g. "water?" Her answer: hydrogen bonds. ---- nothing else. just hydrogen bonds. Not a very realistic teacher in my opinion. Avoid.
First half of the semester was tolerable, second half was disastrous. Her tests are ridiculously difficult, so be prepared to read the entire textbooks and you can expect a 20 point essay question on you midterm. oh yah! Fail the lab, fail the course!
Catherine is awesome. If you find biology fascinating, and you're willing to work hard and pay attention, you'll be fine. Her lectures are pretty run-of-the-mill (power point and her talking quickly), but she's fast - record lectures or figure out a reliable shorthand. Ask lot's of questions and get clear. Most students struggled with the lab alot.
Taking her class has discouraged me from ever taking a biology class ever again. She expects WAY too much in her tests & is the hardest marker ever. She is very unorganized. Didn't even get through half the chapters we were supposed to cover. She goes off topic a lot, talks was too fast and her slides are very unclear and not helpful.
She talks pretty fast and then expects the class to know details about what she said. Her exam questions are quite difficult, especially the long answers. I had a pretty good chem background which was very helpful! She is nice enough but it's definitely been difficult and would have been worse if I didn't have some previous experience.
Tough course and confusing material. She tries her best to make it interesting and relatable but really demands that you know the material inside and out.
She is a very unorganized individual. She has trouble focusing on her material and will often start telling stories about her family for up to 10 minutes at a time. Her tests are very long and you'll only get marks if you match what she wants 100%. I do not recommend her if it is your first semester.
She spends a lot of time talking about herself and kids which sometimes could be interesting. She's pretty nice and gives 5% bonus to each midterm corrections. Her exams are pretty long and confusing and you won't get full marks if you didn't write everything she wants. Quiz every week but she only takes the highest out of a pair.
You will fail if you skip her class
She is very unorganized and she always goes off topic in class. She starts to talk about her family and she could go on for over 20 minutes. She asks you to send things over email for marks and if she doesn't see your submission in her crowded mail box she won't give you marks. She is knowledgeable but i would NEVER TAKE HER as a prof again
Goes on and on about her family. Hard marker.
Weekly quizzes to help give you a chance to get your grade up. Clear exam criteria. Teaches off of slides that are also given out as handouts so you can follow along and make your own notes; if you aren't a BIOL whiz you need to come to class or miss important content. She rants about frustration with students regularly, but I would too.
Not a hard class - intro level. Text is semi-optional; not mandatory, but does help (especially the 1 page about how to write an HSCI paper). People who did poorly didn't pay attention - didn't know quizzes were every week or which days exams were on (even though she went over it several times). She cracks down HARD on plagiarism, which is good.
Catherine was very unclear with criteria for group projects. She goes off on many tangents and wastes class time. She discusses information about her personal that is too personal. She is not very professional and hard to follow. Her quizzes are moderately easy but she grades projects and papers very hard considering her criteria is so vague.
Her class was not bad, but the test is hard. It does not inspire me in learning when I was in her class.
Very passionate about the subject but her notes are basically useless until you go to the lectures, and even then you are frantically writing them down and missing some important points as she speaks. Exams are are quite difficult and based a lot on said notes.
She rambles off topic a lot, she's nice and she really tries to get us to pace ourselves when writing our term paper. But her lectures are super rushed and doesn't really give us enough time to study for our midterm -- as she usually finishes the last section of the topic the class before the midterm.
Her tests are all based on her lectures, so textbook not needed. Anyone that is complaining about having to come to class in order to learn the material shouldn't be in college. She's tough, but she's passionate about what she teaches. And has a great sense of humour! Also, she is more than helpful during office hours. Would definitely take again!
PROS: very passionate. Deliver concepts in easy and daily-life style. Humorous. Flexible in exams, give more questions for you to choose from. CONS: Speat fast. Too many definitions to memorize. Unclear grading criteria, you dont know what she is expecting when reading the question. Too many personal experiences. Didnt finish the outline at the end
Very hard marker. Just a heads up
My third time taking a class with CG and I wasn't the only one; we had multiple people in our class taking it as an elective in order to take class with her. I think she's one of the best profs at Langara; why? - passionate, no bs, fair grading. Her classes are for motivated students. She will make you THINK.
I took this class again because I did not do so well the first time but Im thankful I did. She motivates me to want to be a better student, thus the reason she can be tough sometimes. If you pay attention and participate in her discussions then you will get a good mark. She has made a huge impact on my life and my goals.
Super friendly prof. Not hard to get an A. Definitely recommended. You don't want to skip class.
She is okey but few times she is not clear about what she wants to convey. Specially in exams, she doesn't clearly tells what she wants as an answer. And I wasn't satisfied by her teaching skills.
Catherine is one of those rare instructors that really cares about her students and the field and about education in general. She does everything she can to set her students up for success. This may mean more work for you, but it also means more work for her. She does it because she cares. Brilliant, hilarious, engaging, inspiring, talented!
She only describes her family matters in class instead of teaching. her grading criteria is worst.
Catherine is great b/c her stories make you read/think b/w the lines & look at the bigger picture. Tests are strictly based on notes & content she goes over in her lectures (if you listen well) she'll give you hints like "this is on test". Accessible outside class, will give honest feedback & explain what she's looking for. Easy? No. Honest? Yes.
One of the most amazing profs I've ever had in Langara. One that actually cares for her students and will do her best to help improve her students' skills (i.e CRITICAL THINKING). You have to be attentive and you have to always keep track of those due dates. Her feedbacks are helpful but you have to give a lot of effort to get a good mark.
One of my favourite profs so far at Langara. Super honest with her students, cuts out the BS and gives it to you straight. Super passionate about health sciences and makes it SO interesting. Always has a relevant story to tell. This is NOT an easy class and you HAVE to put some work in. Wouldn't recommend to ESL students as it's very writing heavy.
She discuss her family matter more than study material in class
While Catherine is a tough grader and sometimes unorganized, I actually would highly recommend taking her class. She is extremely engaging and knows how to motivate students. While I wasn't looking forward to this class, I finished this class with an absolute love for biology, and much of that can be credited towards the way Catherine teaches.
Catherine is one of my favourite instructors. She explains the topics we learn in great detail and her exam questions really makes you think! She is also very humorous! She's usually accessible outside of class. We have weekly quizzes and typically it's based of the previous lecture. She also lets you do corrections on midterms for 2 extra marks!
She lost my team's group paper and a friend's final exam. She eventually found both but almost gave zeros and did not believe that we had completed them. The worst prof I have ever had - cannot believe she has this high of a rating. Everyone I know who took her hated her.
Catherine is a real gem. She has her own style of teaching(which sometimes do become hard). She is easily accessible and really tries to understand your problem. Though it is really hard to get a good grade and you will definitely have to put in your best efforts but the good part is that she is always ready to help. She is really good!
Catherine is a respected professor and she actually cares about her students. However, her exams are the hardest exams I have ever taken at Langara. Beware of exams, and term papers. If you go to her during office hours, she's really helpful.
Very nice instructor and she provides actual view of health science field.
lecture heavy, passionate and extremely knowledgeable
She is one the best instructors.
Her classes are not easy - lectures and tests are very heavy. However, she is accessible almost all the time and will gladly answer your questions. She will push you to your limits but will also guide you when you're confused. She will give hints during lectures for weekly quizzes and even for midterms and finals. Take down notes! Get a good group!
She is super nice is general and her lectures are very interesting. But her exams and grading criteria are not clear. She always want to give least of marks and expect word to word answers. Lecture notes are not much helpful.
One of the hardest classes I took - you really need to work hard in order to succeed! She's pretty good at lectures, but it may be too fast for some people. I wish she was clearer with her criteria, as most of the people in my class were confused all the time. Seems approachable, but she's very intimidating to ask help from.
She spent her first 2 lectures yelling at us but would whisper when she told us important information. Didn't start teaching until week 3. She talked mainly about her family amongst other things.
Very nice and positive teacher, but really tough grader, has her own definitions and wants it exact or it's wrong. likes to get off topic and talk about her kids and family. Notes are just print offs of slides which you can barely read and small room for writing. If you want a good mark, don't take her.
Just one word " AWFUL "
Worst mistake of my life.
she's the only one that does health science in first level and some in second level. so you can't run far away from her. she's hard, crazy and makes you work hard for the smallest percentage of your grade. i wouldn't take her but i have no choice.
Wouldn't take her if i didn't have to.
Honestly, Catherine is not a bad person. She is very passionate about health sciences and cares about her students. However, she is a very tough marker and wants everything specific (in her words). I would not recommend her. I consider myself a hard worker and in the end, I managed to get a B. Dont do it unless you have to! Youve been warned!
She talks slowly about unrelated material but zips through the important stuff, which leads to incomplete notes. However, she is in her office a lot and is more than happy to answer your questions if you miss something in lecture. She LOVES written answer and you have to be super specific in your responses. Study and you'll be fine.
Catherine is the best prof i had at langara. If you will do 1130 with her she prepare you for all the second year health courses. Good grades won't come easy, but if you are a hard worker this is the class for you. She do every thing to bump your grades like feedback before submission on term paper. I have done HSCI 1130 and HSCI 2212 with her .
Switch your program. Lectures are 90% random stories. Doesnt post notes online. Youll have to read 95% of the textbook to understand the subject. If you live outside of van then itll be hard work cuz youll have to meet wit her. Doesnt make the material clear and marks like were at Harvard. Vocab on tests but barely gives definitions in lectures
I took HSCI 1130 and 2212, with Catherine. She is the only instructor at langara who gives everyone a fair chance to show their dedication towards study. Trust me, you will never forget Catherine Glass, she is inspirational. I wish i took my biology classes with her. I did not get As in the class but learnt a lot. I cant really thank her enough.
She is fantastic and super helpful.
She is super-cool and really nice professor. She always helps a student in getting good grades. If you have any doubt feel free to go to her an then problem will be solved. I will take all of the upcoming hsci courses with her only.
She is a bit unclear on what she expects on assignments. She will however respond to emails promptly and is very helpful during office hours.
To any students considering her course, it's impossible to pass with her and I recommend avoiding courses with her at ALL COST. Not only is she unclear about criteria, but she's barely available outside of class and she gives your work back so late so there's barely any time to consider her "feedback". Also, half the class dropped out.
Great teacher, but hard marker if you don't regurgitate the stuff on the packages she gives out. If you can learn all the concepts required on the package, you're fine. Even then, she has easily accessible hours in her office where she can answer questions if needed. Another advantage is the time she gives on midterms, which is 3+ hours.
She's helpful & will go beyond what you ask for when you approach her for help. She's not for everyone, but if you're open to criticism, determined to fix your mistakes, and eager to do well you can ace her class. One of the best profs at Langara. She truly knows what she's talking about and delivers info well.
Catherine is extremely funny and obviously loves biology. She loves it so much that she tries to go over everything even into the small details therefore giving you lots of material to study and learn. Your final grade comes from weekly quizzes, 2 midterms, and a final. Her midterms are extremely difficult but she doesn't put a time limit on them.
Worst teacher till now i have seen at langara
very engaging during her lectures. My class was behind by 9 chapters because she took so long going through the material. She expects you to use critical thinking which is great but expects 4th year biology responses for all her first year students. Very difficult marker, you have to be crazy precise with your answers.
Super hard marker and you don't learn much about the course during the "online lectures". Test questions are also very very vague and she expects you to know the information inside out without discussing much of how she wants the test questions answered.
She openly expresses her thoughts in entertaining ways that make you want to keep attending her lectures. She's a balance in terms of the course difficulty. In my course, the only heavy part was the weekly quizzes. She may be sweet during lectures but participation is a must when you want to keep her that way. She's a gem.
She is such a tough grader. No matter how harder you get to do the things she will not give you enough grades.
Katherine is a caring, lovely teacher that you can see how much passion and effort she puts into her lectures. Go for her if you like hearing random, real-life, sometimes inspirational stories and also if you need challenges in your studying. cuz there will be a lot of heavy tasks like term projects, weekly quizzes, and super difficult exams.
I could write a book about how bad this teacher is. learn nothing from her lecture, incomplete notes due to constant rambling off topic. Grades your work as though youre a 4th year student whos studying at Harvard. The answers never enough she wants it to say exactly what she wants to hear. If you like wasting your time take her, DONT DO IT!
She's very smart and talks really fast. Most people have trouble following her, and she changes the topic really often and always ends up talking about her personal life for irrelevant reasons. I've learned more about her family than about biology. Also, her grading criteria aren't clear make sure to go to office hours for a more clear explanation.
Catherine's class is tough, but she is fun. You should have the textbook if you expect to get a B or better. Catherine isn't the best lecturer because she speaks very quickly and tends to jump around to different topics. Her tests are harder than the material seems in lecture, so read the textbook or watch some Khan academy to do well.
Knowledgable and passionate about biology which is a plus. Lectures were often chaotic and hard to follow. Lectures notes were minimal/non-existent. Getting the textbook is a must to succeed tho she says it's not. Midterms were challenging. Take the lab exams seriously b/c they are worth a lot of marks.
Catherine is a good person, but not a good teacher. Unfortunately, she tells a lot of stories about her personal life, and material that is well missed! The slides are not helpful at all, very vague and that doesnt add to the tests. Midterms and finals are HUGE, be prepared to write a lot! She has no confidence in students. If you can RUN!
one of best at langara
Catherine is a great person. Yes she may get off track with stories, but she is so entertaining and it makes me actively listen during lectures. Her grading seems fair in my opinion; your grade depends on the effort you put in. The way she explains concepts is great and since I am a visual learner, her explanations and examples are easy to follow!
