She is awesome. Very personable and reasonable. You do need to study for the exams, though!
professor hicks is awesome. She is funny, easygoing and very accomodating to students schedules. She moves due dates for major football games! She makes a hard subject easier to understand b/c she makes it interactive and gets you involved. Poster sessions ROCK!(also thinks michiganders talk cute!)
Highly recommend taking HK. She makes a hard subject matter relatively easy to understand. Very laid back. Just an overall very nice lady.
Cathy is excellent. The class is setup great. She is probably the best English prof that is teaching 201. She knows her stuff but also knows what it is like to be a student.
HK is cool. Read your book and study like a REAL student should, and you will do fantastically well in her class. Don't take it if you just wanna drink beer not show up. She is cute, but her good attitude makes her a hottie.
I did not find her to be helpful at all, I would go see her in her office hours and leave even more confused. Not very clear on expectations from the beginning, class structre and grading was constantly changing.
Who ever said she wasn't helpful and is unclear must be a complete idiot and not done well in the class, quit whining this is college, not high school for gods sake If you GO to class and DO the work, you will do fine, if you skip or slack you're gonna have a hard time She's a good teacher take her.
Prof. Hicks is an awesome professor. Without question, the best I have had in my entire college career. Her class was the one I looked forward to every week.
She is awesome! Great teacher, interesting, and helpful. Helps ease into writing a long paper by doing it in steps! I'm glad i took 201 with her!
Linguistics is a really dense subject that skips between simple concepts and horribly complex ones. Prof. Hicks-Kennard is really helpful at breaking it all down, making it not only easy, but fun (expletive infixes, for example). She's right for the subject; knows there is no 'proper' grammar.
I loved her class, even though it challenged me a lot. If you want to take an easy linguistics course, take 175. It's just a tad harder here (375), but she's very clear and wants you to understand. We had fun in class, and not many people took it, only about 14, so it was very comfy...
First half of the semester is difficult and the test was hard, but she gives you a poster and presentation to do that boosts your grade. If you are looking for an easy class, this isn't it. If you want to put some time in it, you can still get an A.
She really wanted her students to understand the material. If we weren't getting something, she would stop & allow an entire class to go over what went wrong. She made it interesting & made it known that she wanted us to add our own opinions.
Very fun and interesting class--eally enjoyed it. First half of the class is hard, but second half is fun and alot easier. Go to lecture and pay atention it does help understanding greatly! Overall- I highly suggest her she was awesome!

Prof. HK is awesome. She is a prof that actually cares about her students. She is really funny and trys her best to make the class fun. I would definitely recommend her to anyone. I just hope that the other ENG classes I have to take are with her. A teacher all the way!
The class is usually not a bore and the assignments are nothing to be afraid of. It's okay to miss a few days without it hurting you but just don't make it a habit. She does randomly check attendance but usually only when she notices a lot of people missing. Take this class with her and be happy.
She's a great teacher. I loved the class. She's straight to the point and incredibly funny. She makes even boring things interesting. Learn IPA, it really helps.
Very fun, down to earth Professor! The exams are easy if you study the full study guide and follow along in class. If you don't like attending class then don't go, her powerpoints and lecture are extremely helpful. Book is very good too...it goes along with the powerpoint with more explanation.
I loved this class, and I'm not just saying that because she checks rateyourprofessor.com. The class is very interesting and I actually enjoyed going to lectures. The assignments weren't to hard as long as you start them early, the night before isn't gonna cut it. If you have the choice, get into one of her English classes for sure!

Very fun.
doesn't seem to like a lot of her students
Definately a good Prof. Her tests are a little extreme for a 100 level class, but all her lectures are on Blackboard. She's a bit of a perfectionist, but is really fun and easy going. Possibly the best teacher I've had in the ENG. department
I really enjoyed this class. Professor HK is really interested in the material, and it shows. She gives very good assignments, and as long as you do the work, you can learn and do well. I was really disappointed by her cancelling her classes because of that abortion protest. Maybe the CM Life embellished it a bit?
I thought this class was awesome. I pretty much goofed off the entire class time and still passed the class with a B. The exams are kind of hard for a 100 level class, just study for them. Teacher is cool as hell. Very commited to her job. Have fun in this class...im outro.
Awesome professor, one of the best I have had in the English dept and at CMU in general. Makes class enjoyable and worth attending. Lots of fun, tells awesome stories, and willing to help tons during office hours.
This class makes going on Fridays worth it. Dr. HK is very helpful and excited about this subject. Tests can be difficult but as long as you listen to the lectures and keep up with the reading you'll be fine. Best ENG prof that I've had yet. A little side note she looks a lot like the tennis player Lindsay Davenport :)
This was one of my favorite classes. Professor HK is awesome. She is really enthusiastic about what she teaches and she makes class fun. I actually looked forward to going to this class. She made linguistics very interesting. Some of the material was challenging but she makes it so you want to learn. I got a lot out of the class and I recommend it!
The awesomest teacher I've had. When I had a question, she could always answer it. Exams were hard as hell though. I'm gonna miss not having her as a teacher anymore. There were some great discussions in her class!!!
I had this class last semester and I loved it. It's really interesting and though she doesn't take attendance, I went all the time (unlike my other classes). I still don't know if I'm supposed to call her Catherine or Dr. Hicks, or Dr. Hicks Kennard, or what... I know you read this. Make it clear who you are. Dr. Hicks Kennard is way too long to sa
Dr. H. made this class very interesting. She was very enthusiastic about the subject and I always looked forward to this class (even on Friday). Her tests are challenging but it you go to class and study your notes you'll do fine.
She's sort of kinda excitable.
She is very enthusiastic about her subject but is kind of hard on her students when it comes to testing. 3 tests each worth 25% of your grade, high stakes testing which were hard to pass. Please realize that your students have other classes besides your own and give us more opportunities to prove ourselves.
Professor HK is awesome. I took her 175 and 375 courses at the same time. She's funny and tries to make everything interesting for the students. I wasn't so sure about the grading being based on tests and a project (in 175) only, but it doesn't seem so bad now that I've been through it. There's not a lot of busy work in these classes! Great prof!
Very easy, but alot of fun. She made my transition to college alot smoother and we had a lot of fun in the process, a very easy A but you take very many things out of the class with you. I would recommend this to anyone!
Easy class. Go to a few activities, write a couple of papers, and you got yourself an A. Long class, pretty boring at times. For only 1 credit, take it if you are unsure about things in college but otherwise, you'll do fine. Few guest speakers. Easier then other FYE classes...thats what I hear...take it with HK.
Outstanding. Fun, interesting, funny, down to earth, relatable: Dr. HK is everything you'd want in an instructor. While the material can be tough, she is always available for help. Take ENG 375 or 175!! You won't regret it! (Also, petition the school for a linguistics major/minor and she'll love you forever)
Not a very good professor. I didn't learn anything and the tests were very long and pointless. I hated the class and am glad to be out of it
Very upbeat and awesome teacher. She was very helpful even though she was clear that she didn't enjoy being there/teaching the class either. She tries to make a class benefit the students most. Very down to earth, funny, and loveable. I almost wish it wasn't just an 8 week class.
I would recommend Prof. HK to anyone. If you go to class and take good notes, you are golden. Your grade is based on four exams, but they are open note and book, and she also offered our class extra credit. I learned so much from this class without having to complete busy work. All-around, she's a funny, admirable person.
This class was alot of hard studying, but Dr. Hicks is an amazing teacher! She was very helpful and she was very interested in this subject. She made class and learning the material a lot of fun!
I would highly recommend her as a teacher! she is super nice and funny and an amazing teacher, one of the best at central i think. The class covers some pretty difficult material, yet she makes it understandable. the tests are clearly explained on an outline she hands out before tests, which makes them much easier! she tells really funny stories too
horrible woman. plays favorites and isn't afraid to show it. thinks she is god's funniest gift to earth. false. i learned three things: she is from Texas & is not used to snow, she loves Will & Grace and the word "spramp," and she has a son. She also likes to drop the f-bomb a lot. That is all.
This professor knows alot about her field, just not how to teach it....
Dr. HK is a good teacher. She is really funny and she knows so much about language. Some parts of the class were interesting but there is a lot of lecture involved. The class is hard but she outlines the exams and just try your best, that's all you can do!
Dr HK is such a good teacher, she knows what she is talking about. Make sure you go to class and print off the lecture before hand so you can add notes along. Only homework is to go out and find examples of the kind of grammar we study. Tests are hard, if you study the night before it won't be good enough. She's nice and funny, and sarcastic.
HK is an amazing professor. She makes a difficult subject fun and easier to handle (even if you don't have a flair for phonology). She is always willing to answer questions and her lectures become funnier as you understand the content more. Subject isn't easy, but HK makes it worth the work
Dr Hicks makes this class easy to understand when the reading is confusing and complicated. She is very enthusiastic about what she does and makes the class fun. The textbook is a requirement and note-taking and attendance is a must! Very helpful if you have questions. Exams are take-home and they are time-consuming. Excellent course and prof!
This is a great class. She makes it interesting and fun. She really wants you to read the chapters in the text book, but I never did and got along just fine. She's a great teacher and this was by far my favorite class of the year. Take her!
The class involves four exams and no other homework. Although attendance isn't mandatory, you should come! She lectures and goes over examples for the tests. The tests are open book, take home exams. You get a week for each, but they are difficult. I didn't ever grasp the class but still passed with a C+. She's great, but the class wasn't for me.
Best prof. ever! I enjoyed this class a lot. She makes the material fun and easy to learn. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you miss a lecture it'd be best to look over the powerpoint's she puts on blackboard. If you know the material it's an easy and fun class. I would highly recommend Dr. HK. She's awesome!
She was an amazing proff. I learned a lot for her, but you have to put some work in. Even so, the class is really, really fair, and I learned a lot. Just keep up on the material, and you'll do fine. She makes it pretty interesting. I loved her!
She is a great teacher, the material was really difficult for me but she was always passionate about the material and probably one of the best teachers I've had at central.
This was a really hard class for me. We only had 3 tests and a project for grades and that really made it more difficult for me. She is very helpful but expects a lot from her students (sometimes too much, I think). I ended up with a C which I was happy with. Be prepared for a challenge if this isn't something you love.
One of the best professors at Central hands down. The class is tough, and she has very high standards, but it's nothing you can't accomplish. She will change the way you view the world if you haven't taken a linguistics class before. I would take underwater basket-weaving if Dr. HK was teaching it.
She is a really helpful teacher, and you can learn a lot from her. I highly recommend her..
This class was extremely difficult considering it is only a 200 level class and that it is mandatory for an undergrad. She was not helpful at all and graded incredibly hard. She always had an attitude during class and did not help if you had questions. She also took forever to get your papers graded. Would not recommend her.
Dr. HK is quite possibly my favorite teacher of all time by far. I love the class material as well, and she keeps it very fun and worth listening at all times. Everyone else in my class seems to like her a lot as well. I wish she could be my teacher for all of my English classes. Long story short, she is the best kind of person.
Very clear and organized! I liked the textbook, too.
Very good textbook and other articles. Dr. HK cares about how everyone is doing! :)
Allows in-class time to work on papers. Papers-only, no tests, no exams. She's really fun, laughs a lot, always willing to help. Super sweet. You have a group and you peer-edit each other's papers, and sometimes she reviews it too before you turn it in, so you have a LOT of feedback BEFORE it counts for a grade! So getting a good grade isn't hard:)
Dr. HK.. She's funny. That's the only positive. The whole class you get five homework assignments, one project, and three tests. What she teaches in lecture, won't be on the test. She expects you to read the whole book to get a decent grade in the class. She's a PHD, so the wording on the tests is ridiculously hard. Just don't take her classes.
She's wonderful. Almost every story she told was related to the lesson we were learning at the time. The class is difficult, especially in the middle of the semester, but she explains further when you ask, and she helps during office hours. You have to read a lot, and pay attention in class, and ask questions, but as long as you do that, it's great
I had to take this class twice and this person was the only one in the English department they had to teach this class. Did will the second time around as all she did was recycle the same tests with slight variations. She wants you to repeat her exact words back on the exams. No room for other thoughts. Plays heavy favorites in and out of class.
HK is the most caring, amazing professor. The material is difficult at times, but she is always available outside of class if you reach out. Very knowledgeable about her field, and I would recommend taking as many linguistics classes with her as you can.
Dr. HK teaches with a flipped classroom method so all her lectures are online, including all of our quizzes are online. There are no tests, but a lot of simple and easy papers. In class counts as participation, although sometimes it's pointless to go since all her lectures are online. It's an easy class but sometimes she grades tough.
Extremely tough grader. I would be okay with this, except that she gives you no direction for your assignments, then expects you to know how to do it. She also assumes things of your papers, even though she is wrong. She does not teach the class the best way. I am often left confused; and again, you're just supposed to know it, which is ridiculous.
Dr. Hicks is brilliant when it comes to linguistics, and she enjoys making things understandable to students. All material is presented in class on the board, so note taking is a MUST. I mean it, exams are tough and most questions come straight from lectures. She's a tough grader but is willing to work with students to help them get a better grade.
There was a project worth a big part of our grade with parts divided between group members. My part got a 100% but the project as a whole got an A- which made me get an A- in the class. I understand teamwork is an vital skill, but this is my education and my gpa and putting it in the hands of strangers if unfair to me.
I do not recommend KH at all. She is the slowest when it comes to grading. She took months to grade our first paper, and when she did she marked every little thing down and gave me a horrible score. I even met with her before I turned in the final paper and she told me all the corrections I needed to make (but still gave a bad grade) Do not attend
Very nice lady and was very considerate this semester regarding the Pandemic and online formating. However, quizzes are a little tricky and there is a lot of group work. I do recommend her, just have to work for your grade.
Dr HK is the BEST! Her class was so interesting, and she always throws in hilarious stories. Weekly discussion board with required responses, bi-weekly quiz or journal. This is writing intensive, so the word count mattered, but I found myself using many more words because of so much interesting material! SO many interesting concepts covered!!
Very rude professor, often sent out mass emails that would make students feel stupid for asking reasonable questions. Not understanding of personal circumstances that made deadlines hard to reach. No credit on DB posts a day late. Very difficult for her to offer any help to students.
Rude and not understanding whatsoever. Definitely would not take again. The only good thing is that she grades pretty easy
First time I got a B+. Tough grader, did not have the clearest instructions. Better hope you have great partners because it will be majority group papers. She is very kind and will go out of her way to answer questions but overall just take this class at a community college
I really liked Dr. HK. Her grading was primarily determined by effort. While some of the styles are difficult and you are expected to be self-sufficient, she is wonderful at answering questions and being accommodating to your needs. Be ready to read articles and carry classroom discussion about them, but they are very lowkey. I highly recommend!
Grading is odd. She gives you 100 pts and then takes them away if you 'mess up'. I did well in the course but the grading scared me all semester. The papers are too difficult except for the last one. I have friends in this course though and if you can get any other prof please do that.
At the beginning of the semester, she was an OK professor. But as the semester went on, things started to become disorganized and I felt like I never knew what I would be doing in class that day. She preached professionalism in emails but would take over a week to respond. You get two absences and get points removed from your final grade after.
Really nice professor, wants you to succeed. Sometimes doesn't give lectures on certain things you may need to do on projects. But very easy to talk to
Overall HK cares about her students and she truly wants to see them succeed. Her grading style is a little weird but as long as you make changes resubmitting an essay you should be fine. The first half of the semester there is a bit of reading, it is important to take notes as the reading will be used in future essays. Would recommend for ENG201.
Was nervous for this based on other reviews but she wasn't bad at all. The grading scale is a little wonk but its nice bc as long as you follow basic instructions, you'll keep a 100% easily. Reading can feel like a little much at times but its only a few things per week. Super accommodating, if you just ask she will help you tons.
Very condescending and rude. Is clearly annoyed with students. Be prepared for a lot of group work.
