New teacher, she is great always willing to help you. Go to office hours she helps very much. Class goes by fast, the material is somewhat difficult but she makes it easier when you go see her.
She's great. Awesome class. Big help. :o)
Does not know how to teach effectively to a large class. Is great 1:1 but only confuses people more in lecture.
Go to class and go to her office hours! She explains everything so clearly with lots of examples that helps on test.
Learn to love your textbook for this course. Go to office hours when you need clarification. She is a very helpful and dedicated professor.
There is a lot of work for this class. She explains the material pretty well but if you have questions go to her office hours. The tests are hard but if you understand the concepts you will do fine.
good professor. I would recomend if u study u will do well
This class is definitely a lot of work with OWL homework and quizes due every other week along with HW due in lab, 3 projects and 3 exams. I was really interested in the class and I found studying by myself as fruitful as going to class. She puts her class notes online and is very helpful during office hours. Great with huge classes! I got an A!
She is very easy, nice and makes the class entertaining. She wants you to learn and willing to help you learn even though you don't get it.
Take acct 221 with her. OWLs, PRS, LAB hw, and three Lectures make for a lot of work but whatever, thats acct 221. If you want to get an A, go over the HW assignments. Online she posts the solutions to the hw assingments, so review and practice them. The exams are cake if you do that. I promise you.
She had a good scale for grading with a lot of things other than tests (ie owls, homework, prs...) but her tests were very hard. She went over things in class too quickly and the homework wasn't helpful because she assigned it before she taught it to us in class.
Really good teacher if your interested in learning. As long as you follow the material you'll do fine.
She's an awesome prof. You have to take Accounting with her. Though she's tough, you do learn lot and if you work hard, you'll still get a good grade.
I was memorized from the first day. What a FOX! I couldn't get anything near an 80 to save my LIFE but she worked with me. I did well on the owls/everything else but those exams.. I went to her OH especially before final and failed that bad boy miserably LOL but I ended up with a better grade because i put forth the effort, i just suck in accountin
wow this class was so easy. tip here is that you listen and attend every class, that is the key to success. (i didn't even open the book besides using it for the homeworks) she is very helpful and is always trying to inspire students. this class was not difficult by any means but you do have to put some effort into it. highly recommend her.
She may be good from far but far from good and her inexperience shines through her lectures
they dont get any better than Kathy West - not only is she an incredible teacher, but she is always available to help students, has endless enthusiasm, is friendly and energetic in her teaching approach, knows her subject matter, and is also a wonderful person on top of all that - she is the best professor i have ever had, after 3 degrees!
one of the worst teachers i've ever had, her lectures were boring and unhelpful, her exams were impossible, in that she put material on them that weren't on the study guides, and worst of all her class stopped me from being accepted in the business school

shes terrible! the only reason she is a teacher is because she looks good.. AWFUL teacher, plays favorites, doesnt really care, wants to tell everyone she is better than them. doesnt really teach, just wants to attract attention
she's a good teacher. and she's hot
She teaches us book problems and excepts you to understand real world concepts for exams, which makes the class very difficult. She is very unwilling to clarify things when asks and is too busy for extra help. Stress has gotten to her. This lady needs a vacation, pronto.
I liked her. A little cocky maybe but she knows her stuff. I thought the class was pretty easy and loved my TA Alyssa! Tests weren't bad, but the FRP was confusing. Okay class overall.
I have nothing but hatred and disgust for this person. She scribbles so you can't read her notes and speaks jibberish. I got a D+ even with studying and extra help. The TA's suck too. Avoid this class because no matter how hard you try she will screw you over. It's a shame people like this are allowed to teach let alone be in public.
I was surprised by the last few ratings, clearly the people did not do good. She teachs like 450 kids a semester. She was clear, nice and very helpful in extra help. She goes out of her way to help her students. The work was not bad if you kept up, it is a core course in SOM so it will be tough. I would def. take her again!!
So basically, she looks good. And being an engineer, the class is a joke. I took it for a minor in business. Tests are easy, PRS is a WASTE OF TIME. TA sessions are useless on mondays and will force you to learn on your own because she's always a bit behind in class.
I find this class completely useless to attend. She spends an hour of the class time talking about everything but accounting and only 15 minutes actually teaching. As a result you have to teach yourself all the material while doing hundreds of repetitive book problems that you have no idea if you are doing right. Only take it if you have to.
She isn't a good teacher. She wastes most of the time talking about her personal life and the Red Sox/Patriots. The TA's deserve to get paid instead of her. Waste of money/time.

Very nice and personable. Class is not that helpful to go to except for an optional PRS. Having a good TA is a must!! Tests so far are so-so in hardness.

She makes us laugh & I can stay awake in class... but she makes the tests really hard. I don't understand why the tests can't be like the owls or the hw. I get really nervous before her tests bc you can't know what to expect. She never wrote back to the ONE email I ever wrote to her. Nice, but clearly cocky. TA's saved me. They should teach it.
going to class instead of learning from the book is alot easier. the tests were kinda hard doing the homework helps. in class she goes off tangent so much about sports if she wants to waste that time then talk about it at the end so people can leave well she already lets us leave early so thats is good she isn't bad overall do your work ull do good
Before the year starts you can choose if you want PRS points to count for 4% of your grade or have that 4% go to your final exam grade (making it 29% instead of 25%). She moves relatively quickly during class and gives you a lot of work. OWLs and weekly homework assignments due in the lab are annoying. 2 TESTS, LAB QUIZZES, LAB HW, AND A FINAL.
In the first few classes I really liked her she was fun and told stories that held your attention but by the end of the semester I think I knew more about her personal life than about accounting. She moves through the material extremely fast and her tests are very hard and unpredictable they are nothing like the homework or owls.
She's awesome. I was in the SOM 108 class and I thought she was great! Just make sure you understand the concepts thoroughly. Memorizing OWL questions won't work. The tests don't surprise but she makes mistakes on tests. I got a perfect score on the final. Not a crammable class but it's easy. Homework is time consuming but easy.
WORST class ever!! She spends too much time talking about herself, and not enough time teaching. The exams are impossible. I spent hours with the TAs before exams, and still did poorly on them. Its an SOM requirement which sucks because both ACCT teachers are impossible and hard. GOOD LUCK!
I had Cathy for ACCT 221 & 222. She talks about herself most of the time and teaches a new chapter every class! I went to office hours and she didn't help me at all so dont bother trying to get help from her.

She gets off topic a lot, which impacts what needs to be learned in class. I went to class as a precaution, but I really relied on TA hours, slides online and the textbook to teach me the material. I honestly didn't think the lectures helped all that much. Her tests are really tricky and difficult, so make sure you know what you're doing.
her tests are ridiculous, she talks about herself too much, goes way too fast through material, doesn't put anything she tells you she will on the exam and puts everything she says she wont, completely unhelpful when you go to her, Tells you not to worry about your grade, I basically taught myself thankfully earning my own good grade
doesn't care about her students at all, will say anything to get you to leave her alone, she's a professor so she can go on her exotic trips with the school and fancy banquets, very rude when you want help, doesn't do her own work takes questions and slides from the book company, I wouldn't have minded her so much if I actually learned something
If I knew this class was made for a social hour I would have never signed up for PRS. This woman is a waste of life. She never responds to E-mails b/c she is too busy with other work. I don't think she should be a teacher b/c she is more concerned with her outside jobs. your better off teaching your self so take the class on-line or somewhere else.
She talks about herself SO much it made class unbearable. Seriously, she would talk about herself for half of the class. If she was going to subject us to the torture she should have put some Q's about herself on the exam. Someone needs to tell her no one cares, and to teach accounting. Learned more from my discussion than I ever did in class.
i thought this class was very easy, but she is not a good professor. talks about the red sox/patriots for 20 minutes, about herself for 20 minutes and accounting for 10. go to acctg lab because that is the only place u learn.
As most others have said, this class is a complete waste of time since she just talks about her personal life and things no one cares about. By the time she gets around to the material, you are dozing off. Definitely do the homework and go to lab.
awesome teacher, so hot
hard teacher, a lot of work in the class and does not truly teach the material, only place i learn is in lab.
At the beginning of the course you're given a choice of doing PRS or getting extra percentage points on the final. DON'T DO PRS! Class is a waste of time, and you'll be sorry you did it. She's not good at teaching. I got and A from reading the chapters myself and doing the problems, the labs are also very helpful.
Nice teacher who wants her students to do well. Don't do PRS, it is really hard to get an A in it. If you know material, tests are not that hard but a few tricky questions. Go to Lab, it is a big part of grade and really helped me to understand material!
Class is really boring, and pretty useless. She does not teach very well, u have to learn the material urself. She puts questions in the exams that are designed to fool u.
Hard class and alot of work, but if you do all of it you will be fine. Do the PRS they do help the grade, go to lab, and do the chapter hw's.
I have no idea why so many people did not like her. Essentially a huge percentage of the SOM students fail this course or don't do well in it... and so they blame it on the instructor. I thought she was awesome, she was really nice, and her lectures were interesting. I went to class 50% of the time, didn't study once, and got a C+.
Accounting is a boring subject. I think this is the reason she throws in stories about the Red Sox/Patriots, etc; To actually keep students attention. Who can do accounting straight for 75 minutes? Go to lab. It makes or breaks your grade. Also do the homework. The subject matter isn't that hard at all. It is mostly commonsense if you aren't stupid
Lucky enough to have this teacher for Acct 221 and 222... NOT! Seriously needs to go back to some teaching workshops because the only thing I remember her talking about is her boyfriend and how he owns bueno y sano. Tries to be way to cool. Always to busy helping boys during office hours to help anyone else, she would just tell us to come back.
She was really easy if you did all the work! Accounting is really commonsense... I thought she was very nice and she drilled all the info to your brains unless you sat mindless for 75 minutes! She went over everything very very very OVERclearly.
Not very helpful, and when you need help she is very reluctant to give it. Doesn't teach course material well. Overall Bad class.
I don't remember what this lady talked about because I was trying to sleep through every class. I would have tried to do so for lab as well but the TA kind of sucked. Class attendance is mandatory but useless; yet class isn't so bad because owl's are easy pts and practice exams are posted. She is also a somewhat of a site for sore eyes.
Yo guys, keeps this on the DL, but I heard through the grapevine that she once assaulted a baby penguin.
Do not take this class, waste of time and effort. Her tests are hard, she does not answer any emails, does not help. don't do prs, Lots of homework 3h weekly from the book+ owl, then have to look up stocks! She is out there to make your life. miserable, Beware!!!!!!
If you like your gpa to stay high avoid this class. Take a summer courses,Or forget about SOM, Does not help her students, very rude! 221,222-makes it much harder then it should ever be!Test are very complicated. Stay away, save your gpa and your money, so your equation is balanced
Im sitting in this class right now wishing I didn't have to take it. The work isn't too bad except for tests. They're all multiple choice, but are much harder than the other work. You would think an intro class would be easy, but its not. Sucks that SOM students are required to suffer through it. This class may singlehandedly ruin my 3.7 GPA.
Guys, lets be honest, you're in school to learn, so I'm not going to discuss the fact that this class is hard. But that the fact that this woman just plain SUCKS at teaching, does not respond to emails, acts like shes still an immature southwest girl is what bothers me. Take it with someone else, shes an awful teacher. F-
Does not know how to teach. Rely mostly on book to learn. Not helpful at all. Good luck to all those who are required to take this course. You will need it.
Worst class ever! Does not teach, talks about her real life accounting stories. Horrible horrible teacher!!
I got an A without trying. It is a pretty easy class, and if you find it hard you should probably consider a basic math tutor, because its accounting you never do more than add subtract and remember a few rules. All these complaints are from people that must have been whacking it to her instead of doing the 5 minute weekly assignment.
Great proffesor. She does her best to show us how to do problems and explain them. Also she uses her personal life stories to relate accounting to the real world and shows its not just boring number problems You need to put in some effort on your own to look at the book because class time is not enough to go over everything. Good class, learned a lo
she is ok but does not explain things in detail
Prof West isnt as bad as people make her. I thought her class was ok. She does give alot of hwbut you kinda need it to understand the subject. She gives 3 exams and a FRP project which isnt that hard. Her exams are alil hard tho but she's fair and she give extra points if its needed. This class was ok but if ur not into doin hw then u wont do well.
Honestly I did little to no work all semester and got a B+. Going to class is useless. Rely on the book to learn everything. If I actually spent the time to read the book and not bs the hw instead of cramming the night before exams, I would've def received an A. Just do the work and you will be FINE!
she's a very nice professor. her exams are hard primarily the wording, but you really need to study in advance and definitely do the extra credit it will boost you grade up. hate the FRP's but go to discussion and do all the owls and you will be fine. do the prs as well it will boost you up, class is interesting sometimes not all the time.
C West explains everything so that it is CRYSTAL clear and often redundant, and assigns a lot of homework. She tries her best to make a really boring subject at least sort of interesting, although I showed up to most classes to pay attention, learn the material in the first 15-20 min, then pass out. I got an A with minimal effort.
Ive been to two of her classes and I already know shes goin to bang my gpa away..here we go
I had her for accounting 221 and 222 and absolutely loved it. 221 is meant to be hard to keep people out of the accounting major when they shouldn't be there. She went over everything very thouroughly and made you not just memorize but understand the material. Beware though, she is very good at making multiple choice answers all possible mistakes!
HARDEST TEACHER. RUINED MY 3.9 GPA.
She is a good prof. Her smaller class is soo much easier and its a good time. She has no tolerance for people who do not get the material, so that is kind of annoying. much easier than the other accounting 221 classes.
Wicked nice person yet one of the worst teachers. I did not learn one thing in class and I tried going to office hours yet I barely got help there! Try to avoid this class if possible!! I worked extremely hard all semester on passing this class yet still have to retake it.
Professor I hope you are reading this. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stop yelling into the microphone during class. It may seem stupid but it makes you so hard to listen to for 75 minutes. Just take the microphone off or speak at a normal volume. It really ruins the class and makes it so hard to concentrate
i thought this professor was great she could do without the sport stories but overall i had her for acc 221 and then chose her for acc 222 i got an A in both. you are in college so it should be hard. she has a bunch of good TA's. if your struggling get the solution guide
The most amazing woman to walk the Earth. <3 Baht
Here is what I have to do for accounting this week. By the way this is pretty much average. But this is just average. Written Homework (will probably take average student 3 hrs), Owls, a take home quiz, a project, and a test next week. So today is thursday and this is all before next friday. Good luck to whoever has Prof West
Every time I sit in Professor West's class I think about the scene in the Dark Knight when the joker kills the guy with a pencil. Then I think that I should ask the person behind me to do it to me.
The best advice i can give about this class is to take it at a community college during the summer so you dont have to take it with professor west
Horrible class. She has no teaching skill and can not explain material to the class at all. If you go to her for extra help she will just lecture you on when she taught this material and question you on why you didnt learn it. Overall she is one of the worst prof i have ever had. If you want to kill your GPA take this class.
She's a good teacher. It's just ALOT of material to cover in 4 months. Go to class, labs and TA office hours. Do all the work (PRS, owls, lab hw, frp) because it will help you in the long run. Her tests are HARD. and theyre kinda tricky too because of wording. I got 70's on all my tests but everything else upped my grade to hopefully a B! Goodluck!
go to class and listen to what she says, it helps. the TA's are good.
Honestly she isn't that bad. She is extremely helpful and so are all of the TAs. The class itself is difficult but its hard to find an accounting class that isn't difficult. If you plan on doing anything in business I highly recommend this class.
shes straight. her class is ALOT of work(owls, online and paper quizzes, homework everyweek)definetly but if you understand the material when assigned itll be easier come exam time.3 exams and a final, tricky but not impossible-studied for 3 days before each one and got A's on all of em. go to ta office hours, they help if u have questions.
Cathy West is ridiculous. She shows little to no interest in teaching this subject. She would rather spend our lecture time trying to peak the interest of male students by talking about the Red Sox. I'm not paying thousands of dollars to talk about the Red Sox. Her exams are SO HARD, and the amount of homework she assigns per week=mind blowing
WHAT AN TOTALLY HORRIBLE CLASS too bad its needed for som ill save you some time when i say go kill yourself now
The reason people hate this class is because they don't want to put in the work. You can't do the hw or study for exams at the last minute or you will do badly. Cathy is a great teacher, she want everyone to do well and will always answer questions. She gives clear notes and pulls examples from the book, so you can look there for clarification
so hot easy class went like half the time and aced it if you dont like her class or think its hard you shouldnt be in business school
If you go to class, study the material and do all the work she assigns you this class should be no problem. She really does try to teach and she's a down to earth teacher. She realizes that most of the class dosn't like accounting so she doesn't force peopel to. Her exams are tricky but that's because she expects you to learn.
If you come into it with no background in accounting I can see how this class could be hard, but it is definitely manageable. Hard to study for, you either get it or you don't. She's really tricky on the tests, so go slow and read carefully. If you do all of the work and do alright on the tests you should be able to get a decent grade.
Extremely Helpful, always willing to help out students who want the help. The tests and quizzes aren't hard but can be somewhat tricky. With that being said, they are very manageable if you have an understanding of the material and apply the concepts. I would very much recommend this class and Cathy. Didnt rent a book and got over a 100 average
Awesome class Cathy is a great teacher.
Cathy west tries to teach, but doesn't end up helping. Better off learning by yourself with a textbook buried in your face.
Yes there is alot of work you are going to personally have to put into this class, but what Cathy assigns for her students is to help when preparing for exams and such. Now don't be afraid to go to TA's office hours. They are truly the best and help when you don't understand much. Tough class yes, but easily manageable if you care in doing well.
Be careful. She pays attention to the littlest detail on every problem. Uses iclickers every class so attendance is more or less mandatory. The tests are all multiple choice but very challenging. Don't expect an easy A.
This class has a lot of homework. If you put the time in to do and understand the homework then the tests will be reasonable. The key is not to save everything to the last minute, the workload can add up quickly. If you split the homework throughout the week, and follow the syllabus it makes it easier. Got an A in the class. It's possible.
She tries to trick you on tests which are really hard. You are best off going to a TA in SOM every week to teach you the concepts. It's hard but not impossible, she goes way too fast and is unclear. Best piece of advice is learn the concepts as you go along. If you don't get something, learn it right away- the material builds on itself every week.
READ THE BOOK. This class is a pain, attendance is mandatory, and the exams are full of "trick questions," or questions that address the exceptions to the concepts covered rather than the straightforward concepts. Go to TAs for help every week if you don't understand the concept, falling behind in this class is difficult to recover from.
This class wouldn't be bad if Cathy realized its an intro course. She goes over the basics very well and the book is a great resource. However, she makes the tests way harder than they need to be and justifies it by saying she wants us to "think critically." If the test questions are harder than what we covered, then its unfair to the student.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS AT SCHOOL WITH CATHY WEST! I have always been a solid B/A student and this class was extremely difficult. First off there is tons of book hwk that will literally take you hours, OWl homeworks, Owl quizes and quizes every week in discussion. Her test format is completley different then anyother work you do.SHE IS NOT HELPFULL
The most common phrase you'll hear in class is, "This isn't that difficult!" While that may be true for an accountant like Lowry, it's not for a student who has never been exposed to accounting before. Tests are very tricky and there's a lot of other assignments. I took this class to see if I liked accounting... now I know I don't.
This class definitely requires time and effort, but it's not impossible. Lectures are online and iclicker is extra credit so if you don't want to go, you don't have to but it's helpful. The OWLs are really great practice and there are answers for all the homework. A few extra credit opportunities really help too. Not an easy A, but manageable.
Not an EASY A but HIGHLY possible if read the chapters and go to class. read the book chapter on time and don't fall behind, its okay to do the owls later but DO THEM and get a 100%, lab grade depends on how good your TA is so switch into the class with the best TA, know what it means to receive 500 on account for exam 1, decent EC opportunities
Accounting: you either get it or you don't. This utterly black-and-white subject is made a little bit less boring thanks to Cathy, who is very enthusiastic. Tons of hw, tons of reading needed, it's not an easy class. You'll need a lot of time, take your labs on WED. I don't know if it was Cathy or the course, but I hated it. BEWARE OF THE SASSYNESS
Really hard class but if you understand the information and concepts you'll do fine on the exams. Exams are not what you see in class necessarily but she is great and I love her as a person. If you don't hate this class you should probably be an accounting major then.
She is one of the best prof's I've had. Tells us exactly what we need to know, you just need to really pay attention. If you are confused, go back and watch ECHO class captures or go to her office hours. She is a really nice person that really wants you to do good and understand the basics. I honestly wish she taught all accounting courses!
Cathy's class may be difficult (especially if you aren't an accounting major) because of the tricky wording on exams, but you'll do fine if you keep up with the homework and understand everything all along. Going to class is somewhat important if you want to pass the exams.
The exams are very hard. She is really nice and funny but if you can take a different 221 class i would!
Explains many concepts well, but is terrible at articulating a few of the more difficult aspects. Tests aren't really like anything we do in class or on hw. One good thing is lots of extra credit
DO NOT take w/ lowry!! Her exams are RIDICULOUS, nothing like the written hw or OWLS. I understand the material, get 100's on the hw and quizzes, and then the test is like a foreign language. She tries to over complicate the questions and trick you A LOT. very frustrating. DO NOT recommend her.
She is so beautiful! I read ratemyprofessor and thought most people were just exaggerating her class. Only thing I can say for fact is true from here is her test layout (looks completely different from all hw, quizzes, and OWL) which can screw you over. The book is a HUGE help. She is much better one on one than in a lecture hall. Fact.
Definitely need to put the work in to get a good grade in the class. Either it's understood or it's a lot of time and effort to do so. Cathy is a total babe who is much better in office hours than anywhere else. Tests can be tough, but she's a midrange teacher overall.
Cathy is awesome! Great teacher and very passionate about the major! That being said her exams are ridiculously hard and she attempts to trick you A LOT. You either get it or don't. Isenberg only cares about their "fellows" and gave the rest of their students one of the hardest classes at this school. Be expected to put in a lot of work.
First, I was impressed by her passion in the subject. She was genuinely interested in helping students. And she had a lot of background knowledge in the subject. She knew a lot and probably more than necessary about the subject. She always went out of her way to help me. And the lectures were pretty straight forward.
I found it very helpful to read the book; it was my best resource because it's very straightforward with examples of everything. Her tests are ridiculously hard because she tries to trick you a lot and because the HWs, OWLs, and practice exams are nothing like the actual exams.
She is a good teacher, explains material clearly. Good amount of HW but forces you to learn lots of material. The book is your best resource. Read every chapter before class and study hard.
Cathy's class isn't that hard to do decently well in if you study hard. The exams are difficult because she tricks you with every question, so take your time and know the material. The book is a must-read. Overall her class isn't that bad-- Cathy is always willing to help you out.
This class is easy as long as you fundamentally understand what you are doing. The tests are written to test your ability to understand and apply, not your ability to memorize. OWL, lab and iClickers are grade boosters. You must read the textbook to succeed. Taking the time to properly do the homework will pay massive dividends for you as well.
Worst class ever taken. She makes concepts harder to understand than it should be. She always attempts to trick students for questions and it results in bad grades. The homework load is ridiculous, but you dont have to do it correctly to get credit Exams are not cumulative. Do the extra credit video to save your GPA.
She is a terrible professor and stimulates too much participation, and wastes way too much class time. Definitely take this class online or somewhere else
Great professor. She teaches in a straight forward manner. If you can grasp the concepts of accounting, you will do fine. Most kids who complain about this class should be angry at the material, not her. She does as good a job as a professor can.
Took 221 at umass and also took her online 371 class. Her online tax class was the most time consuming online class I've ever taken and even though the exams are open book it is still difficult. Both of her classes require heavy book use and a lot of self-teaching.
She is super inspirational. Also get ready to do a lot of assignments.
She is a fantastic teacher but expects a lot from her students. Lectures are an important part of passing the class. Tests are very difficult but if you spend a lot of time on homework it will be okay.
She's over the top. I don't recommend her.
Worst teacher I've had at UMass. She makes the lectures very dull and if you don't read the chapter before class, you can forget understanding what she's talking about. Homework assignments take hours and there's a lot of them. Not only do you have to do the online assignments, but she makes you rewrite everything on paper to pass in at discussion.
Cathy is great. Sometimes takes too long with examples but that helps some people learn. A LOT of homework assignments and a quiz just about every lab session, but they're easy enough. Attendance is not mandatory, but you need to go to class to pass or it will get confusing for you.
This class is by far the hardest class I have taken so far in college. The material itself is challenging because it's like learning a language. But, the exams are what kill students because they are made to stretch your critical thinking skills. Plus, there is a lot of homework. You have to be self-motivated to do well if it doesn't come naturally
Really hard class. Must take notes during every lecture and READ THE TEXTBOOK or you will not pass. There is a quiz in almost every Lab. There are 3 exams including the finial. They are long and hard plus they are worth 66% of your grade. Good Luck.
Cathy is absolutely amazing. Go talk to her in office hours. She really does want you to do well. I went to her for general advice and it was great. She is super intimidating at first but shes actually extremely nice. If you are thinking of accounting major, talk to her, shes buddys with the recruiters. Go to class and study, tests are SUPER TRICKY
As a teacher, Cathy is pretty good. As a lecturer to 500+ students in Mahar, maybe not the best. This class is possible but you have to work for it - hours of homework a week between Connect, OWLS, readings, etc. If you do all the work (not just fill it in for the HW grade), you will learn. Syllabus definitely overwhelming at first.
Cathy's a great professor. She tries to trick you on the tests so you have to be careful about that. Everyone says how hard she is as a professor and that accounting sucks, but it honestly wasn't bad. I thought she was very helpful and really did care about what she was teaching us. She wants you to learn, but you have to put in the work.
Cathy loves the students and loves to help. Class is hard but not impossible she tries her best to make it fun, and not too boring. There are a lot of TA hours. I f you want an A be ready to ask her and the TAs for help. Dont get discouraged when you dont get a topic, read the book, owls help, the lab quizes force you to learn material.
Lowry loves to talk. She's not a horrible professor but requires way too much work for an introductory class. Unless you want to be an accounting major, try to avoid this class.
Everyone hates on her because Accounting is hard for people not good at math. She does an awesome extra credit opportunity that is very fun. She is always available to meet withemail. Her class is hard, but not because of her teaching. If anything, she made it worth going to class.
Professor lowry tells the most amazing stories of her days in the accounting field. I am truly inspired hearing about the amount of paperwork she has said she has done. I think that every student in this entire college should get the opportunity to fall asleep in her class. Best naps ever.
You can really tell she went to school for accounting, not teaching. She thinks the information is easy so doesn't explain it very thoroughly, leaving you to fill in the huge gaps. There are a lot of errors in her slides which she doesn't correct, and she loves to show you how not to do a lot of the problems to confuse you even more.
Really passionate about accounting and a chill person. Tests are pretty difficult and her practice exams and practice worksheets aren't really like the real exams at all. But there is plenty of help and extra credit available from her and the TAs. Keep track of deadlines because there are OWL, lab, online homework assignments as well as quizzes.
Everyone complains how hard accounting is and that this class is so difficult but arn't willing to put the work in. This class is hard and from someone who got an A here is my advice. Attend class, sit in front , PAY ATTENTION. Do the homework before lab and lecture so that way your reinforcing the material. Study well before the tests, their hard.
Fantastic professor! Class was difficult with lots of reading with medium hard and plentiful assignments quizes exams. Looking to skate thru accounting, do NOT take this class!! Looking for a terrific, engaging, responsive, thorough professor to teach you what you need to know? TAKE THIS CLASS.
Her pompousness is kind of annoying and she does think she is better than everyone. Opt for iClicker and go to class. Do the annoying hw and extra credit and you will be pretty prepared. Although, anticipate the tricks that she will throw at you. The exams admittedly require you to be kind of intuitive. The in class quizzes are a big study help.
Cath is amazing. She's super dedicated to accounting and she genuinely wants you to do well. Her lectures are informative, but go on forever. She's your best friend's hot mom, if your best friend's hot mom would teach you accounting. The tests are difficult and she tries to trick you, despite what she says. Lots of bookwork, but it helps.
Don't listen to the hates. This class is not that bad. If you are willing to put in a few hours a week to complete the homeworks and read the book a little bit you will be fine. Tests are just like the owls and problems from the book. Cathy is also the best
Cathy is an amazing professor and really really wants her students to do well; she will be a huge help if you need anything, and is so so nice. The exams are tough but A's are doable if you put the effort in and are careful on exams (they try to trick you). There's a ton of homework but you need it to really understand the material anyway!
She is a great professor and really wants to help her students. She gives tons of extra credit opportunities during the semester, and if you put in a few hours a week you should be able to pull an A or an A- in the class. My best professor this semester by far.
Without a doubt, Cathy is the best professor I've had at UMass. Fair is the word that comes to mind when thinking of Cathy; she tells you exactly what she expects from you, and she delivers material in an orderly, clear manner over the course of the semester. GO TO LECTURES and go over the material yourself (3-4 hrs/week) and you'll do fine.
Class isn't very difficult. Prof Lowry explains everything very slowly and carefully. Many people have trouble on exams, I did not. Study and do practice problems and you will do well. There are weekly homework assignments that are very good for learning the material. Attendance isn't mandatory but that 5% of your graded is added weight to final.
It was a tough class, usually no getting around it. Exams are very heavily graded and she purposely tricks you repeatedly. I learned a lot though.
Great professor and okay class as long as you study and do the work.
This class takes work. To get an A, you must be prepared to spend time on the homeworks, quizzes, and tests (she is generous with extra credit). The first exam is the easiest (just read the book, redo HW problems, and do practice test) but she can trip students up with dates (she teaches you how to avoid her tricks, however). Exam two is hardest.
Professor Lowry has been one of the best instructors I have ever had. She truly wants to see her students succeed and was able to make Accounting a very enjoyable subject. Students who complain about this class are the students that do not want to put in the necessary effort to do well.
Prof. Lowry truly cares about her students & giving students the opportunity to succeed. Lectures are extremely important, you cannot pass without the instruction she gives in class (strongly suggest opting in for the optional iClicker). Do all of your homework & study hard. You need to put the effort into this class, but it's definitely worth it.
Lots of homework on owl, connect, due in lab. Quiz given every lab. Expect to put in the most time out of all your other classes. Stay on top of the work or you will fall behind. Tests are hard but tip is too rewatch the lectures before the exam if your behind.
Very good professor, but the course in general is hard. The concepts she teaches gets harder and harder so definitely stay on track. Once you fall behind, it's hard to play catch up. Definitely watch her lectures and go to office/TA hours if you need help.
Cathy is an excellent teacher. She goes out of her way to help and seems truly interested in teaching. One of the best instructors I've had.
This class is pretty difficult. There's like 4 different things you have to do for homework weekly, which gets annoying quickly. Also, she's easy to tune out in a 400 seat lecture hall like Mahar. I feel like she was genuinely trying but isn't the best in the large lecture hall setting
She's okay but not the best. Most non-accounting majors I know hate her while most accounting majors I know love her. Plenty of extra credit opportunities. Try your best to understand her test style. Having taken accounting class in high school, this was an easy A for me.
Definitely a class in which you have to work for your grade. Topics get harder and build off each other so stay on track. A lot of homework, but if you do them after the class they're assigned it's easy to keep up. Watch the recorded lectures. Go to lab. Opt in for the iClicker grade.
Cathy is a great teacher but the course is taught in Mahar which can make it difficult to focus. She tries to explain things very clearly in class and is always open to questions during lectures. There is a lot of homework on a weekly basis which can take some getting used to but it helps reinforce the materials. Actually cares about inspiring you
Cathy is incredible. She tries her hardest to make accounting fun and understandable. Definitely study for the quizzes before lab and go over the material thoroughly at the end of each week, because you will fall behind. She moves quick so make sure to stay on top of your work. She is always available to help, and she's super nice!
Hardest class I've taken so far. Lowry is a helpful professor but this class has way too much homework. Make sure to not fall behind and complete all assignments. Lots of opportunities for tutoring. Tests are EXTREMELY tricky and detail oriented.
C Lowry is a great accountant, I'm sure. But I do not recommend taking this class unless you enjoy being yelled at. She cannot teach very well, and instead of calmly answering questions or explaining difficult concepts, she prefers to get flustered and yell. UMass needs to hire a new Accounting 221 professor - at least for the large lectures.
The semester that I took this class, I took five total classes. The work load for this class but more than every other class combined. WAY too homework that takes up too much of students time, especially for an introduction class, considering most of the students have different majors.
Don't go to class, it wastes your time. You literally study everything by yourself. LearnSmart and Ebook Assignment teach you everything. Lecture only teaches you 1/5 of the content.
One of the hottest core courses in Isenberg! This course definitely can tell you whether you want to major in Accounting or not. Prof. Lowry is pretty nice and explains the material clearly (at least for the first half of the semester). There are lots of homework due every week. This course definitely needs you to work hard to get good grades.
Worst prof and class I have ever had. She expects everyone to shout out the answer in her lecture like the elementary student does, go to her class if you want to learn cheerleading skills. Also, tons and tons of homework. And the homework usually takes more than about two hours. This is a class I will never ever take again. Think before you take.
Professor Lowry means well, but awful teacher. You will end up teaching yourself and going to see TAs. Some of her questions on the test are so irrelevant. This class is only easy if you're an accounting major. She just makes this class so hard. If you do not have to take this class, don't! It'll ruin your GPA.
wow, they say this class is the bane of your existence and they are right. So difficult and I relied only on the extra credit video to pull out an A- in the class. Take it somewhere else if you can.
She's very knowledgeable and cares about her students success. However she teaches like a mom helping a young kid with easy math homework. If you don't get it she'll just repeat it louder and angrier.
I took this class as freshman and I was worried that it would be too much. Accounting is hard if you're not really a quantitative person, but Professor Lowry does a good job of explaining the difficult concepts. Material is tough, but she is very approachable and always willing to help if you ask for it. Tests are straightforward. Do the homework.
Catherine explains things in a very disorganized way, just jumping all over the place. There's a lot of homework via connect, owls, labs. She says she doesn't trick you on exams but she does. The wording on the exams aren't like the homework/practice exams, so you get tricked. The extra credits is what saved me from failing
Took this course online, dropped it once I saw the amount of homework and how disc. questions were set up like a scavenger hunt. I decided to take Acc221 w/Rachel Trafford. What a world of difference!! R. Trafford's class (online) was easy to navigate, quizzes/exams/discussions were straightforward, she clearly answered questions/feedback.
Cathy Lowry was not a great teacher in my opinion. I taught myself almost everything with this course because her lectures were unnecessarily confusing. Anytime I emailed her with a question or concern she did not respond and was not helpful.
this is the worst class i have ever taken. the amount of homework in this class easily surpasses all my other classes combined. get ready to spend at least 2 hours a day on this class, the average in the class is a c plus for a reason
So much homework that is worth nothing in your grade. Tests suck and lectures teach you nothing.
So. much. Homework. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU ARE TAKING 4 OTHER CLASSES. You whole semester will be invested in this course. Too many assignments. Tests are too hard. I go to every lecture, every lab, I try my hardest on every assignment and will probably still be a C if I am lucky
Cathy is a AWESOME professor!!! She tries her best to make accounting fun and clear. Honestly, as long as you do your hw ON TIME and make sure you watch those x-credits videos BEFORE the lecture, you'll master it. Lectures are definitely worth going. Good TA is also important.
She is my favourite professor in isenberg so far. She is really good at teaching and giving presentation, even it is a 400-peopel lecture.
GREAT professor! Accounting is boring but she tris to make the class fun!
Taking Accounting 221 with this professor will be the worst decision you ever make. Not only does she fail to explain anything in class, but she assigns hours upon hours of homework each week. Even after doing hours of pointless homework, the tests, which she does not prepare you for, are worth almost all of your grade. Do not sign up for her class
Be prepared to do a TON of homework. There is a homework due in lab each week, then there is at least 1 Connect Homework due per week, and then there is at least 1 OWL quiz per week. Tests are hard and she knows this. At the end of the semester she gives you an extra credit assignment to make an accounting video, worth 15 points on your worst test
Lowry is a gem. Easy class (and overhyped) if you put in the work. DO THE SMARTBOOK EXTRA CREDIT. Taught me everything and helped understand things that are unclear in class, ended up not even going to class and used the Smartbook. Use the iClicker points option. She says she doesn't try to trick you on exams, but she does, so be aware.
Prof. Lowry knows accounting very well but isnt amazing at teaching it. However if you are good at it, get to know her since she has lots of clout in isenberg. She definitely does trick you on exams despite her claiming she does not so make sure you study hard. She offers lots of extra credit so take advantage. TAs are usually very helpful.
After taken the class in the Fall 2017, I STRONGLY recommend going to class, taking the practice tests, going to the TA review sessions (they are so helpful!), doing the extra credit video at the end of the semester, and MOST IMPORTANTLY going to see her if you have any concern at all! She is extremely reasonable and understanding! Good luck!
Professor Lowry really cares about her students, but her tests are tricky. It is important that you go to the TA office hours for extra help when you don't understand thing, because it's easy to get confused. There is a to of homework for this class. It is super important to the weekly extra credit and the extra credit video they helped me get an A
The homework is great practice, but it will take hours for you to get done sometimes. There is extra credit, and I appreciated how communicative Professor Lowry was. She's a pretty good teacher who really tries to make the class interesting, going to lectures will help you on exams because she often says "this will be on the exam."
Cathy was one of the best teachers I have ever had. Accounting is obviously not a very interesting course, however, she does her best to keep you engaged. She gives a ton of extra credit. If you do everything she tells you to do, you'll do just fine. Re-do OWLs before each test (not Connect problems), because questions are very very similar.
A great teacher all around
She's a very honest, genuine person - would certainly recommend!
awesome teacher! such a nice person
Great professor!
Good professor
Hard class but good teacher
Best teacher in the world! #winning
lot of homework to get keep up with
Good professor. A ton of homework.
Awesome
Shes dope. She rides a little too high on the Patriots, but she's a great teacher.
So much homework I am already lost, but this professor is definitely nice about it
Shes nice!
Cares about her students
Best Class I've ever had!
There is a lot of homework to do but it is all laid out in a way that makes it easy to do. Lectures have a lot of information but are enjoyable and i learn a lot.
Very hard class but shes very helpful.
she cool
HARD CLASS. AWESOME LADY
Great
she's awesome! :)
She's awesome and so funny, always willing to help
Really funny prof, just a cool gal
Great professor, hard class
She is awesome and the course is interesting. Very enthusiastic !!
Extremely funny professor! Very passionate and professional!
Really good professor, genuinely tries to help you understanding accounting
Very enthusiastic teacher both about accounting and the Patriots. There are 3 different sources of homework, so make sure you stay on top of things. Exams make up 66 or 70 % of your grade depending if you use iClicker (I think almost everybody does). Only doing this since she moved homework to Monday because of Superbowl Sunday.
Really cares about students doing well and passionate about accounting
Catherine is a great speaker, and the class has numerous resources to help you succeed. That said, the course material is very difficult, and you gotta work for a good grade.
There is a ton of HW, exams are difficult, and you're gonna get frustrated. That being said, Lowry does a fair job explaining the difficult concepts. You need to be able to apply them. Listen for when she tells you specific exam questions and do the extra credits. Tip: focus on the first 3 chapters heavy. Theyre the building blocks for the class.
Cathy is very sweet and wants students to succeed. She explains most topics well and making the video is a great extra credit opportunity! Multiple attempts to get online HW and OWL questions correct. Exams are challenging, but she does try to prepare students and emphasize important topics. Class can be a bit dry, but Cathy is great.
A ton of homework that isn't really necessary. The FRP is a gigantic waste of time. Otherwise, she goes over material pretty well, especially before exams - and gives hints on what will be on exams.
Probably the worst professor I've ever had. The fact that 66% of my grade came from exams and I'm not even an accounting major is pretty ridiculous. I learned absolutely nothing from this class and it was way too difficult for non-accounting majors like me to have to take. This course is way too hard considering I will never use it in my career.
Cathy is a great professor, really cares for her students, and tries to make her lectures exciting. There is a lot of homework and the exams are tricky, but she will drop hints during class and all her lectures are recorded. Definitely take advantage of all the extra credit because it can change your grade significantly!
One of the hardest Professors I've ever had. She is very unclear about the things she explains in class and the tests are incredibly tricky. Tests count for the majority of the course grade so you definitely have to study. Huge load of homework due every week. To get a good grade, you're gonna have to work. Not a huge fan of the class or the prof.
Very hard to follow, unclear on subjects. Had to take the class pretty much by myself, and teach myself everything.
Everyone either loves or hates Lowry, and I get it, but if you actually LISTEN to her instructions (write out all the steps, do the homework, etc.) this class will make sense. I find that anyone who doesn't like her tried to take the easy way out but she makes you work for that A. So, just pay attention to what she says and DO IT!
Lowry is the absolute best!!! If you put in the work you will do well :---)
Lowry is interesting prof. She makes things over complex than they need to be. Her TA's are the best but heard if you struggle she isn't that accommodating and expects you to figure it out on your own. Especially if you have learning disability, you are might struggle. Def use TA's and youtube videos for extra help. she isn't that amazing.
Nice lady, but she intentionally makes tests full of tricks (says she doesnt) and lectures are a waste of time as she wastes time on easy problems. Lots of extra credit, so not too hard to do well though
Cathy makes accounting the best she can for a TON of people who dont wanna do it! She is fun and caring and passionate about it. Lots of homework easy to get 100% on. If you go to class, read, do all the hw and xtra cred, and follow her instructions (to WRITE EVERYTHING OUT) it shouldnt be too brutal. Tests are the hardest part
I really like the class but not a fan of the course layout. It is read the chapter, do the homework and ask questions in the forum. There are very few videos. The tests are hard and the questions are tricky. If you take a question one way you will most likely get it wrong. she does scale the tests. Learned a lot
easy class but a lot of work. have to put in the work but she is a fair teacher and do all the extra credit.
Professor Lowry is not a clear teacher. Her lectures jump from one idea to another idea too quickly. To do well in her class, one must do the EC. Her grading is not fair either. Her constant yelling is something you never get used to. Overall, her teaching methods can improve, also her availability outside of class can use some work too.
DO THE EXTRA CREDIT! They are super easy and take an extra hour per week, but brought my overall grade up 3 points. Exams are tough, I never scored above an 80. Personally didn't pay attention in lecture and learned everything last minute. Utilize your TA and the discussion. That is where everything started to make sense.
Tests are way too hard
Awful teacher, spends lecture talking about nonsense instead of actually teaching. You have to teach yourself through the book and the TA's. You do an absurd amount of homework each week for it to only count for a minimal amount of your grade, while the extremely difficult tests count for your entire grade.
Financial Accounting is a challenging course but Cat Lowry is a good Professor. She genuinely cares and wants everyone to succeed. The tests in her class are definitely hard, but there are a lot of outside resources that I use regularly. Her only con is that she yells in lecture, I found it annoying at first, but I got used to it.
Super chilled out prof who wants all the students in the class to do well, if you simply ask her to postpone the homework she usually does. LOTS of extra credit and she also spends some time before most classes talking about some pretty awesome opportunities
AVOID! Cat Lowry is the worst professor I have ever had. She spends the whole lecture basically yelling at the students about things she knows we will get wrong on the exams. She also spends a ton of time trying to convince kids to become accounting majors. The exams are nearly impossible and she does not teach. The TA's use Chegg to help with hw!
Cat Lowry claims she try to help her students but insists on trying to trick people on her tests. The class has a heavy hw load but the hw barley counts towards anything. All the grade is given off the tests which if you do not have previous accounting experience you will do poorly, guaranteed. She needs to realize not everyone wants major in this.
Catherine Lowry truly cares about her students. Accounting will be tough no matter who you take it with, but she genuinely cares for her students and wants us to thrive. You can't do the bare minimum for this class you need to work for a good grade. She's an amazing professor and is very kind and wants you to succeed.
Cat is great professor and many people say she's not simply because they will not put in the effort to get the A and this is a lot of people's first hard class. The lectures could get off topic, but if you do all the work and extra credit you can definitely get an A. She was forced to leave our class mid semester, so it was hard to adjust to that.
The tests are pretty hard but as long as you put in the work for the other assignments and study before exams you will get a good grade. Professor Lowry can be annoying in lecture but she is very helpful considering the amount of students.
Cat is a great professor, people who dont like her are just petty about their bad grades. Accounting is hard, no matter who your professor is. You have to work for the A, but Cat genuinely wants to see her students succeed and gives out lots of opportunities both in & out of class.
The exams are nothing like homework. The TA's aren' taught on how to grade/what to teach. Her lectures were not helpful. I learned more teaching myself. She doesn't care about her students, she just cares about getting kids to join BAP(accounting frat). Overall awful teacher. The material is challenging but she makes it more confusing than need be.
Continuously gets sidetracked, more interested in socializing with students than teaching - spent one ENTIRE lecture on ONE problem! Doesn't focus enough on students comprehending her material, expects automatic understanding. Learned more from the TAs, they have 30 hrs/week for help. There are a large amount of assignments, exams are 66% of grade.
Obviously knows her stuff; I learned a lot. Some of the assignments (eg discussion questions) border on busywork, but none of it is that bad. Like most tax-related classes, it's not difficult but there is a lot of ground to cover; if you commit to doing the work you should get at good grade, because her curve is fairly generous.
Wasnt great
You really gotta work for a good grade in this class. Lectures were long and sometimes very confusing. Only 3 exams but count to a lot of your grade. The dynamic of the class doesn't really give room for questions so that wasn't great. A LOT OF HOMEWORK (but really the homework is almost quiz-like) so get ready for a huge time commitment.
Homework is a week behind lectures. Unless you work ahead, you will be lost every lecture. But, this class assigns lots of homework every single week (too much, I cant catch up). Weekly homework: read the chapter(s), do smartbook(s), do connect(s), do quiz, do discussion post(s), do excel assignment(s). UHS nurse commented on my blood pressure. lol
10/10 teacher just a hard course but she does a fantastic job in getting the info to students in lecture
She seems really kind, but she's way too passionate about the suject to be teaching it to people minoring in business. Way too much homework when this isn't a subject I'm really interested in (by far the least relevant and interesting of the business minor courses).
This class is a lot for business minors. Its pretty much an accelerated version of 221 and 222 so that you don't have to take both so makes it hard. First half of sem wasn't too bad, second half got really tough for me. Lowry is knowledgeable and passionate but not the best teacher - uses the textbook slides verbatim. Chegg will be your best friend
Lots of homework, but was usually able to get it done in a couple hours each week. Exams aren't that difficult, if you do the homework, you'll be fine on them. Lectures are useful to be at, as you'll frequently do difficult questions where if you can do those, you'll understand the whole chapter.
Very tough and accelerated version of an intro accounting class for business minors. She's very passionate but does a very poor job at explaining the course material for beginners, kind of just assumes you should know what she's talking about and moves very fast. SO so much homework, very easy to get lost in the class coursework.
get ready to teach yourself. no videos or lectures are provided. its awful - especially since we read multiple chapters in one week! wants you to understand it. I could have bought the book and read it on my own for cheaper!!! discussion is required, its stupid when other people are answering for you and they are just as confused. LAZY TEACHER.
Most of class was busy work and it feels like doesn't take they time to actually review your work. She leaves general feedback on your assignments and labels the "her thoughts". She also doesn't interact much, not many emails at all. Maybe posted on the class board 3 times the whole semester.
Accounting 233 is a tough, fast-paced class, but using resources like unstuckstudy ai along with the textbook can help you stay on top of the heavy workload. The professor is passionate but lectures move quickly, so attend class and don't fall behind.
Who else remembers the video that Cathrine Lowry showed to her class in 2019 of hitler threatening to gas students?
She doesn't reply to emails, she doesn't give feedback and you don't learn anything. Take a tax class with someone else if you want to actually learn about tax.
Has a lot of interest in the material which makes lectures more engaging, and shes good at giving detailed information in a way that is intuitive to understand. Exams are not bad at all if you do the homework and pay attention.
