great lady, great teacher. Very liberal but makes class fun and she is a genuinely sweet and caring individual. great person to spend a quarter with.
Dr. May is an awesome person. She's smart and very energetic. Dr. May sparked my interest in taking on more Political Science courses. She rocks!

I enjoyed having Dr. May as my professor. She is the only professor that I can think of that actually has a good attitude towards her student and is very passionate about politics. She kept the students entertained.
She is an amazing prof and person. She cares about the subject and isn't afraid to show her passion for it. She's always willing to help students if they have trouble understanding the material.
Intresting
I'm unsure if I liked her class. Shes a good teacher however the subject (American Foreign Policy) was a bit to general. I loved Killing Pable, was bored to death by Callahans book and liked the Unconquerble World.
She is great. Keeps your attention by banging on desk, passionately conveying info on subject and on occasion, competing with the professors next door to see who can speak the loudest. The class compromises of 2 papers and a written booklet midterm & final
She is awesome! She keeps your attention and is very enthusiastic about her work! She is a tough grader but all you need to do is come to class and pay attention and the class is a breeze! I recommend her for anybody!
There was sooo much reading for the class, but you could get by with reading a couple books and a few things that she hands out. She's so enthusiastic about the topic. She definitely can keep your attention by running around the running around the room
Passionate about teaching
THE MOST AMAZING TEACHER EVER!!!! If your a liberal you will definately want to be BEST FRIENDS WITH HER! If conservative - well, she respects peoples opinions - but you may feel a bit intimidated with how much liberal adrenalin flows through this woman.
She is the cutest! She is such a sweetheart. She is very liberal though! I am very conservative, but got along great with her cause she's so nice. She is such a sweet lady! Study for quizzes, and tests. Go in for help...she'll love you.
Prof May is awesome. She is really into what she is teaching and made what would be a horribly boring and remedial class fun and entertaining. She gets frazzled sometimes and it's funny. She teaches a great class, i suggest you take it.
This teacher is awesome! She really opens your mind to things you never really realized. And is willing to help you. She gives you 2 quizes to test you on your readings. Shes very liberal, and just very cool, Shes open to new ideas, and wants to hear what YOU think. VERY cool, i enjoyed her class
She is a very nicelady, always willing to help whenever u need it.The subject matter of the class was verycomplex and hardtograsp.I liked the class, but she is veryvery liberal she says that she tries not to impose her opinions on students, but she did try to, and that kind of sucked if you differed
This class was fun and easy. I learned a lot from her. She showed me things that I thought were right, was wrong and I thought could never happen in govt did happened. A very good class and I recommend it to all people. Although she is liberal I would take it too personally, its hard not to show it.
She's awesome. I don't know how she deals with all of the ignorant students I had to spend time with. Very passionate and really tries to be objective even though her opinions are reflected.
I love professor May. She is really helpful and passionate about what she teaches. Yes, she is pretty liberal, but the fact that she gives the really conservate students a lot of time to talk in class proves that she does try to show the other view points, even if they are not her own.
This is one of the best professors I had at DePaul. She is interesting and fair. Learned alot.
If you are not a political liberal, you will hate her class. If you are, you will have an outrageously good time. She is probably the most passionate teacher I have ever had.

Dr. May assigns some of the best reading lists in PSC. The conservative students in any class will cry that they're silenced by the "liberal culture" and posed a great problem with this course. Even so, trudge through and take the texts as-is. You will learn a lot!

this class sucked, she made it worse and more boring
Excellent course examining language in American political culture discourse. Professor May is incredibly intelligent. If you can, take her upper-level courses because it is where she really shines. Many negative comments left on here were posted by conservative students unhappy with her liberalism. They are likely the students who performed poorly.

she is a nice lady but that does not excuse her teaching which sucked.
As an adult student amongst my peers, I have to say that the below comments reflect just that, immaturity! Dr. May is fair in the views she offers and accepts politically and academically. She brings excitement and passion into her class. I learned to think for myself and not with the popular when it comes to political issues and the system.
I didn't like her. Her class was boring, her lectures dull, and she not too bright. That's my 2c at least.
terrible teacher, very unclear in lectures, yells about everything. not recommended at all. books are great but teacher is not.
I wasn't too sure about the class before I took it -it seemed intimidating, but Dr. May was,in my opinion, great!Yes, she can get excited/loud at times, but only because she is truly passionate about the subject matter & imparting her knowledge to her students.I would highly recommend her class, as long as you are willing to put in the effort!
Terrible class....nice lady, but not a good teacher.
i took her at moraine valley community college. extremely entergetic
very liberal teacher, so if you are conservative, watch out waht u say!! pretty good overall, but u neeeeeed to attend classes! also, study 4 the midterms and finals.
Terrible teacher....liberal, which is true, but a politics class should never be one sided. Nice lady, doesn't know how to teach.
This prof was a joke. I didn't read, barely went to class, and got an A. Waste of time and money.
She's really nice and doesn't give homework everyday, but her readings are too long and I couldn't find time to keep up. The teacher is great, though, she's really nice; not mean at all. Take this class:D
let's be simple and clear, she's the worst professor i've ever had.... she intimidates others by yelling, she doesn't know how to explain certain books and their contents, and she can't take anyone challenging her political views... what a waste of money for a class!!!
Professor May makes class a joy to go to. She is energetic and it keeps you awake and I'm never bored and I actually look forward to attending this class. SHe gives perspectives that many traditional classes would nto get to...very enlightening.
hard grader
Great teacher, fun, energetic and opinionated. Helps students to think critically and subject matter is enlightening. Keep up with reading, becasue she gives tough reading quizzes. Definitely recommended.
The class was nearly all lecture. Two quizzes. Two papers. Mid-term. Final. Straight forward. Attendence plays a big part of the grade. Just attend, take notes, and you'll do great.
She is a good teacher, but class got boring at times. But she's a nice lady-take her if you are in doubt.
i didn't like her... the class pretty much consisted of her going off on tangents and favoring certain students. a waste of time.
Good professor, passionate about the subject. Fairly easy class, sometimes a little dry.
Energetic, opinionated teacher; lecture based, encourages discussion. However, tangents lead to off-topic and LOUD points by her. Extremely TOUGH grader; be prepared to basically quote everything she says in order to get A's.
catherine may is an awesome woman. she makes politics fun and i loved the way she always called us "students" when she was addressing the whole class. "now students," she would say "lets keep in mind..." it was great!
Cathy May is absolutely amazing, despite what others think. Her passion for politics and her energy make her classes fun. Fair grader, but you need to read the material to get an A.
By FAR, my favorite prof here so far! I loved her class - she was so passionate and it made even the most mundane stuff interesting! Very great analysis of current system. She's the best - you NEED to take her!
i've had cathy may twice and she is great. very liberal and the nicest lady EVER. she is willing to help but you cannot get by without working hard in the class. great teacher (even if you dont know anything about poli sci)
She is a great professor, who motivates students and stimulates critical thinking
Dr. May is what is wrong with academia today. She is the perfect example of the college campus indoctrinating young students about the "evils" of America and how we are the ones to blame for the worlds problems today. She is a very passionate teacher who would be better off working for a far-left wing think tank. Do no take her class.
Very nice and willing to help, explained exactly what she expects on midterm and final, quizes straight from the book. Great lecture, very interesting.
remarkable teacher who was actually passionate about the subject - graded fairly and work was definitely doable.
Prof. May is very understanding and eay to follow. SHe knows alot about Poly Sci. Is a little loud, but its all part of the experience. Very vocal on her political standpoints, but defrinatly a fun time
She's the BEST! I take her every quarter practically because I enjoy her teaching style so much. She's fun and relateable. She's smart and a great professor. Very well-rounded.
Class is not just a repeat of high school government class. Easy but interesting. Poses interesting questions, very passionate about course. Has a liberal slant most definitely, but often critiques the left as well. Was an 830 class and i rarely was tired. Highly recommend this professor.
this is a professor that all poly sci students must take. she is one of the best and very passionate. down to earth and really relates to students. pretty tough grader on papers but she is willing to help you get an A.
She's crazy!! But in a good way! Shes so enthusiastic about politics that even if you're not interested you have to listen to her! She's really passionate and can get kind of loud but her teaching is very straightforward and it makes you really think about the topic. Very helpful and very approachable...she knows her stuff!
Intelligent, passionate, helpful, and attractive. The best professor I had at DePaul. Must take her!
She is extremely enthusiastic about the subject, which makes the class easy. The two quizzes are really specific and difficult, but the midterm and final are essay so they are a little easier. Majority of class was non-poli sci majors but still had huge class participation. Fun class.
Awesome!
Very intelligent professor who can communicate effectively with her students. She's excellent.
I flunked my first quiz. Professor May contacted me and helped me on a one on one for the next quiz where I received a B. She is a very devoted teacher.
She's great! Take her when you get a chance!
Great class and excellent teacher
I'm currently enrolled in this theory course. I have never had a course or teacher touch me in the way Prof. May has five weeks into it. She is amazing!
If you need theory, take her. She is as dynamic as Finkelstein in the classroom. Awesome class!
This teacher and class has rocked my world! I'm learning alot!
i took a marx class with cathy, she is super engaging and super qualified. she really cares about her students, and while the class is challenging, it is so in a good way. she's also a very foxy lady.
The Marx class ande readings are difficult but the Prof. May makes the material very accessible. I am still thinking about some of the issues we discussed in class. Very interesting course.
There are many teachers at DePaul who can teach but few who can inspire. Prof. May is the type of professor who inspires students to be better than who they are. You will not only learn the subject matter but you will also learn how to become a more engaged thinker and citizen.
One of the best teachers I've had at DePaul. Her passion for the subject is inspiring. She really cares about her students. An amazing professor overall. The assignments are not easy but it's worth the hard work. I've learned so much and it's made me more aware of the international world.
I absolutely love Cathy! She is the greatest. I have taken her numerous times and wish I could additionally, but I am graduating. Don't miss her. She has a spark that is contagious, and really cares a GREAT deal about the subject, her students, and the purpose of education. I will miss her a bunch! She relates to everyone.
She's smart, she's intense, she's real, and she's sexy. Take her.
It seems like everyone else feels the same way I do... Dr. May is an amazing professor! She really inspires each student, teaches you a great deal, and makes every class worth while! The work load is kind of heavy but the knowledge you gain from her class is very significant. If you are considering Poli Sci as your major, she will convince you.
I love Dr. May. She is an exciting, passionate teacher and a wonderful person. The issues addressed in class were open for debate, and May was open to any form of intelligent critique. Love Love Love Her!
Awesome teacher. Really passionate. Gives midterm, final, and three papers to decide your grade. Very helpful if you need it and understanding. Wont pick on you if she knows you don't like it like some other prof's. All around cool. I definitely recommend her.
Professor May is a fantastic professor who made the relationship between politics, economics, and culture quite interesting and apparent. Her intensity and committment to teaching is unusual in this day in age. A truly dedicated professor. She will inspire you to learn and to push yourself.
I heard alot about Dr. May but never had her before until last night. Quite frankly, I was skeptical about the hype and her classes. Wow, she really is a dynamic speaker and an awesome professor. I was blown away by the first class--man, she's got my attention!!!!!
A truly inspiring professor. Dr. May is passionate, knowledgeable, and very connected to her students. If you're a political science major, you would be crazy not to take a course with her.
Professor May is an awesome professor. You will learn alot from her in a non-threatening way.
In my opinion, she is by-far the best Teacher at DePaul. Very knowledgeable and wants you to learn. Class itself had it's small challenges, but nothing you can't handle. Quizzes somewhat difficult but Mid-Term final easier. Papers are short, somewhere between 5 and 10 pages. Very loud, but well worth it.
Cathy May is such a great professor. Anyone that takes her classes WILL be engaged.
She is an outstanding teacher. She tries to get her students to be engaged in the course. Helps you with anything including giving you guidance on your papers. If you take good notes, and you skim through the book, it's not hard to get an A or high B. He screaming, jumping, and yelling are all a way for the students to learn.
Awesome teacher. Makes you laugh, but makes you learn. She's also pretty hot for her age, so she's good at keeping my attention.
An awesome teacher. Nearly unmatched passion for her subject and student involvement and participation is inevitable. Very up-to-date and intelligent regarding the realm of PoliSci. Extremely recommended!!
She's into what she teaches and it shows. Although engaging, she's a bit intimidating and likes to talk. In order to get a good grade, you HAVE to read and participate and excel at the papers and midterm/final. She's okay. A good person to teach but not the best grader.
The comment below is absolutely false. I;ve had Prof. May and she is extremely fair and does not "hate" anyone for opposing viewpoints. In fact, that's why her classes are so lively because all views are welcome.
She is so inspiring, bright, and interesting. I highly recommend her to anyone who wants to learn. She's one of DePaul's best.
I took her class this winter quarter. She is very forward and to the point when she lectures. Engages the class very well. You can tell teaching is her passion. Very animated and fun. I strongly encurage anyone to take any of her classes.
I love prof May and would definitely recommend her to anyone in polisci. She's eccentric, but in a good way. She knows what she's talking about and puts things into prospective for you. Very interesting in class and passionate about the subject.
Three years into a PR major, I've never been so awesomely inspired to change directions as I have with Dr. May. She is the reason we foot the bill for exorbitant tuition here - unparalleled quality. If you're complicit with reading and participating, you WILL excel in this course. ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL PROFESSOR. I look forward to this class.
Professor May is AMAZING. She is one of the best polisci professors I've had thus far. Really knows her stuff, passionate, interesting, she's just so great. Hard grader, but just do the readings and participate and you'll be fine.
Professor May is one of the better political science teachers at DePaul. She is passionate about what she teaches and cares about the well being of each of her students. She is very entertaining in class, so if you come you will learn. Usually only has a couple papers and blue book final, but if you attend the class you'll know what to write.
TERRIBLE. Yeah, she knows her stuff and she is no doubt a very intelligent woman but she is so biased that it is disgusting. I am a liberal and she made me want to vote Republican. She is just flat out rude to anyone who disagrees with her opinion.
She is bright, interesting, and cares deeply about her students. I am conservative and I never felt that my opinions were diregarded. She's tough on students because no matter what your ideology, she will challenge you and get you to question things.
Fantastic lecturer. Yeah, she's a little biased, but she's honest about it. Pushes her students to think deeper. Highly recommended.
She is a nice person and some lectures can be intense. She has no problem giving hundreds of pages per class. Essentially only midterm and final, and they are irrelevant to the lectures, entirely reading based. It is impossible to comprehend everything necessary with 4 classes.
You can essentially get A's and high B's in both weekly essays and midterms/finals. But if you don't participate in EVERY class you will get a B. So if you are the type of student that will not participate. Don't take her. Her reading assignments are long and and boring. 20+ pages due every between every class. Would not recommend.
She is a great professor and cares about her students. The class is political philosophy so readings are dry but she makes them interesting.
Dr. May is the BEST if you are trying to get a feel for PSC or just taking it for a requirement. She is so fun and passionate. She makes it extremely clear what she wants on the exams and in the papers. She also makes her notes very clear so they are easy to go back and study.
Super knowledgable in her subject area but EXTREMELY demanding for a 100 level course. My work was graded harder in this class that the 2 300 level courses I was taking this quarter. Quizzes were worded really tricky and specific, and writing was graded like it was graduate school. A brilliant woman, no doubt, but she shouldn't teach entry level
you'll be fine as long as you read the txt book. she didn't take attendance in mine so just keep up with the reading if you don't feel like going to class! Very passionate about what she teaches
Fantastic Lectures, really vibrant and intelligent. Gets you hyped up about PolySci. Weekly papers are a bit much for an intro class, but you walk out of there with your feet wet in basic political philosophy. Weekly one page paper on readings Midterm and a Final, both are two essay questions
Horrible. She will punish you very harshly grade-wise if you do not agree with her conspiracy theory that the IMF bank controls the world and that groups like Al QaedaHamas are simply freedom fighters fighting against IMF-imperialism. Tried to convince everybody to watch the propaganda channel "Democracy Now!". Don't Take.
Dr. May does an amazing job - I've heard awesome things about her 100 & 200 level courses as well, but she really does an awesome job with the Marxism course. Dr. May is great at classroom debate, and is a fair grader. If you take advantage of her office hours she is always able to explain her expectations and hit/misses of previous coursework.
She's a great teacher and very passionate about the subject. She is a tough grader
Such an amazing class. Dr. May is so passionate about what she teaches and allows for useful discussion in class. While she is very liberal, I'm republican and enjoyed the class very much. You will learn more than you ever have about the relationship between capitalism and democracy. Class discussion, 3 papers, midterm and a final. Participate!!
UIP241 is mostly uncovering yourself and your skills for jobs and internships. Professor Catherine May is GREAT. Very very nice woman. She will literally hold you by the hand through this course. We met outside of class and she basically wrote my resume for me. Definitely recommend her to anyone!
Amazing lecturer and very passionate about what she teaches. She shows respect to all the students in her class. Not too much assignments only 3 quizzes + blue book midterm/final. You MUST go to class and pay attention closely. Overall an amazing professor.
Amazing Prof. Cares about her students!
Prof May gets a bad rep by people who don't participate or are rude. If you show up and pay attention, easy A. If you skip class and are rude when you're there, she'll be tough on you. She respects all political opinions, anyone who says otherwise was probably rude in class. Very interesting class and very nice lady & passionate about her subject.
This woman is a true _educator_.
This class was harder than I expected. You have 3 2-3 page papers and 3 5-8 page papers to write during the course of the class. Additionally, there are 3 books required to read during the class. Final is a 10 page paper. Prof May was nice but for most of the class discussions she wanted the students to take control
Poly Sci majorsyou will leave DePaul with a significantly better understanding of whatever topic you take with Prof. May, as well as an appreciation for it because her passion and love of teaching is palpable. Shes a fantastic educator, and a person who truly cares about your growth as a student and professional. One of DePauls Best!
I LOVE PROFESSOR MAY!! She makes politics so easy to understand and gives the best lectures that you will never be bored in. Shes very intelligent and respected. She cares about all her students and her class was great! The essays were good too as long as you use good sources that are up to date then all your facts will be straight. Best class.
A passionate prof, that will share her beliefs so if you are sensitive to that beware. She gives so much good feedback on papers and tests. I am not well versed in politics yet I enjoyed this class. Three papers and two tests. If you pay attention in class and read a bit, youll do well. Shes very nice, and yells her lectures sometimes.
I absolutely adore Professor May! Her classes are super engaging and she always knows how to relate the material to current examples. She is super approachable and a great person to go to for advice for literally anything, because she cares so deeply for her students . She is super passionate and knowledgeable about what she teaches.
Professor May graded her 100-level class with many non-majors extremely strictly and abstractly. It is frustrating to feel as though you are beating a dead horse with topics that are as simplistic as this course offers but don't at all see that reflected in your grades if you don't express the specifics along the lines of what May wants to hear.
