Great teaching methods. Will help you until you understand. She actually made sociology statistics fun. A VERY fair grader.
Horrible professor...although she is very passionate about her lectures she has a way of making you feel like you can't do anything the way you want to. She is a control freak and makes you dread coming to class each day. She has frequent pop quizzes and doesn't seem to care if someone is struggling. Don't take her classes, especially SOC Methods
I really liked her alot. But then again I was in a discussion class, in which I thrive. She was very imformative and the material was easy to absorb. Sometimes there'd be a lot of reading though...but I really really enjoyed going to class.
I hate every type of math that exists, and I actually liked this class. She is so enthusiastic and incredibly helpful and makes the material easy to understand. If you have to take a stats course, take this one with her. She's awesome.
I hate going to this class, everytime i show up it makes me feel stupid. the tests are pretty easy but the homework assignments are ridiculous. some of the homeworks took 8-9 hours to do. Also, the Homework is graded with a fine tooth comb and is worth 50% of your grade. Theres not a lot of math if thats your bag, but theres a lot of graphs.
As my professor and my advisor, Catherine is an awesome professor willing to always help her students. Her classes may be difficult. But you get more out of them and she will go above and beyond if you have questions.
this professor wants you to understand and will try her best to do that. not a lot of math at all. she is extremely passionate about stats and is amusing. she is also very accomodating and the HWs are sometimes time consuming but incredibly easy. exams are a bit tough but you get an 8 1/2 x 11 note sheet. definately take stats with her.
Excellent teacher. Attendance is not mandatory but with a subject like statistics it's highly recommended. Only downside is that if you're a male you may be distracted by her innate, intelligence-supported sexiness.
Wonderful teacher. Loved her! Very helpful and clear when explaining what needs to be accomplished. All assignments you can redo except the final paper (which you turn in a rough draft first) and the presentation. Hard class, but I am glad I took it with professor Moran! Really helpful with questions about SOC outside of class as well.
Dr. Moran is a fantastic professor. She keeps stats interesting and really goes out of her way to help outside of class. She also has a TA who grades a lot of the work and holds study sessions. Best professor ever!
Most of all, I loved her sense of humor... she is hilariously witty. She's also extremely nice and helpful and very committed to her students' success. Take Stats with her!
Narcissistic. Uses humor frequently but it is often inappropriate for the lecture. Uncaring towards her students. Exams are incredibly difficult. It is almost like she enjoys seeing her students suffer. Not helpful. Looks down upon her students. Absolutely DO NOT take Methods if Catherine is the professor.
She is an awesome professor! She makes statistics worth while by making humorous, real-life references to help you understand almost every concept! Take this class with her!
Horrible. This class was the hardest class I have ever taken. DO NOT TAKE IT WITH HER. Every exam we took the majority of the class failed. She refused to go back and cover what the class clearly missed. Has no time to help students. Horrible class.
Took over j-term with her. Funny and tries really hard, but is not always timely- some lectures were posted late and not really timely in email responses. Moves at a manageable pace despite the three week time constraint. Doesn't really care about your grades. Nice person, but okay teacher.
She is such a great teacher. she keeps class interesting. classes arent mandatory but she does have clicker quizzes to keep you coming, and they are based on the reading, so as long as you do that, your fine. she had us do a rich media project and we were all like whatt. but it ended up being really fun and i go a lot from it. shes great.
Love her! She's difficult but a great Professor!! Definitely go to her office hours and love sociology:)
Read the material ahead of time because there are daily CPS clicker quizzes! This saved my ass. CPS clicker quizzes also function as attendance/participation. GO TO THE REVIEW SESSIONS! Do the homeworks in advance too!
AMAZING PROFEESOR! Loves what she teaches and is very helpful. Willing to work with you and makes you feel like an individual and not a number. Really down to earth. She knows what shes doing but is a harder teacher. Well worth it though!
I would not recommend this professor. She had a clear bias. I presented my views and she berated me. She also gave me absolutely NO feedback. As far as I'm concerned, I paid nearly $2,000 for this class and got no attention/interaction. She would comment on other's blogs weekly, yet never gave me any feedback, and no feedback on my final. Waste!
Catherine is fun and knowledgeable about both sociology and statistics. She has really cool stories about her past jobs and she cares about each of her students. Go to her office hours and get to know her!
Ive had Catherine for 401, 502 and 599. Shes a tough grader but will give you tons and tons of help if you go to office hours or get to know her. Great teacher! Her smaller classes are awesome and shes really funny, makes 8ams extremely bearable. So far my favorite professor at UNH! Go to class, it's really helpful & will mean you dont need to read
Catherine is nice but she has a very strong personality. If you're not one of her favorites you'll feel like she thinks you're stupid. Projects her personal issues onto things discussed in class (anti-marriage & children, super feminist, materialistic, etc). Narcissistic. Clearly believes her way is the best way to live life. Take at your own risk.
Moran keeps things interesting but the tests cover things we don't discuss in class or in the reading. The questions are phrased oddly.
Professor Moran was certainly knowledgable of the subject matter, and had a clear interest and passion for her teaching. Her classes though were very difficult to follow and the tests were impossible to well on.
Prof. Moran is a genius of a teacher. Her views on sociology as a whole are really invigorating and very enlightening. BUT, with this being said, it can be a challenge to do well in her class. The questions on the exams are worded very badly and can be interpreted very subjectively, making getting a good grade in her class next to impossible.
It's simple..she doesn't like excuses BUT you learn a ton! I had her previously, picky at times. But overall shes not bad.
Prof. Moran does her best to make the class interesting and she is a very nice teacher but she likes her average overall grades to be in the mid 70's range which can be very frustrating.
Tough grader, she makes you work for your grade but she is very clear, very smart, very engaging and an excellent professor overall.
If you are looking for a professor who is unhelpful and kinda a pain. This is your professor. You will learn something. But I would never take her again. Nor would I recommend her. #10 year
She knows her stuff. Note that she is a very particular and tough grader, has a very strong personality, and very pointed views. I liked her classes, but they were very hard. If you expect a good grade you will need to earn every point. You will need to go to every class, take copious and thorough notes, and go to her office hours on occasion.
Probably the worst teacher at the school. Doesn't help at all. Tests, homeworks, and examples in class are different on purpose she says. Just a terrible class
Professor Moran is my favorite professor thus far. Super funny, helpful, and knowledgeable. If you take the time to learn the material, you will do well in class. Nothing but praises for this professor.
I don't know how I went so long without taking a class with Prof Moran! She is fantastic! Every class is interesting and engaging. I love how she brings in pieces of clothing to explain different concepts to us. I highly recommend her as a professor!
She is a fantastic lecturer who presents the material in a very clear manner. Her exams are open note, open book, and on BlackBoard. You definitely need to know your stuff for the exams, though. There is also a semester-long group project.
Engaging, funny, smart, prof Moran brightened my day! Extensive note taking in class, online exams, semester long group project (not bad at all), and clicker quizzes. Attendance not mandatory, but should go to get clicker quiz grades. Extremely helpful to go to her office hours. Very strong personality. Definitely hope I have her as a prof again.
I absolutely LOVE this professor. She is not only super witty, but she is willing to answer any questions you have, stay after class and chat, and open her doors for lots of office hours. Her lectures were very clear, and I enjoyed learning about soc stats. Her class is not difficult if you pay attention and do all the work (which is not much).
I really liked the lectures and the material covered. She is very enthusiastic about subject matter. The exams are online, difficult and do not reflect class time. I haven't talked to anyone who has gotten above an 80 on any of her exams in my class.
She isn't a bad teacher, but i would NOT take her class if i was just looking for an easy discovery. She treats the class like organic chemistry which can seem a bit ridiculous at times, in the sense she expects a lot from you. Her class should be upgraded to a 600. She is also a "hardo" for the rules.
GO TO CLASS! She gives pop-quizzes, none of which are too hard. All exams are online. No final, only a final project that is fun to do! She is very funny and engaging. A wonderful professor.
Professor Moran is a great Sociology professor. She really knows her stuff and is very passionate about Sociology. I would recommend taking her Intro to Soc class to fulfill a discovery. She inspired me to consider a minor in Sociology. She is quirky and outgoing and just wants to see you do well in her class and love Sociology.
Catherine was such a quirky, unique, funny lady. I definitely looked forward to her each week. The content is a little dry, but you have several group papers to boost your grade. Make sure you're in class, as there are weekly iClicker participation quizzes. Easy questions on the iClicker quizzes, you can consult your group for potential answers.
The tests in this class are impossible... they do not ask about anything that she goes over in class. She gives a lot of group projects and doesn't explain them and then grades them very hard. Doesn't seem like she wants her students to succeed.
I took this class for a discovery and thought I would maybe be interested in this topic but she made it hard for me to enjoy sociology. Her tests don't mention any of the criteria she discusses in class, along with the papers. If you need to take a discovery or are majoring in Sociology I would not recommend this class.
The tests in this class are very hard! Online, open notes, yet the questions are ones that are not discussed during lectures. She is very passionate about sociology. Group paper assignments are unclear and graded harshly.
Fine professor I suppose. She's pretty understanding and works well with students. Statistics really isn't that hard but she's helpful. She gives extra credit point at the end of the semester based on how many quizzes you've been in class for. You will need a clicker. She's a bit crazy about stats and can be extra at times.
She is nice, but also a little crazy. We did so much with our groups and had to write so many papers with our group. It was hard, and annoying. She is a tough grader and her exams are barely on the material she talked about in class, it was mostly textbook based.
This is a great class and a great professor. The tests can be difficult even though they are online and open-book. I didn't study too much or do a lot of the assigned readings and I got by, but I wouldn't recommend it. She is very quirky and smart. Although, sometimes I wasn't sure about the credibility of her sources. Group projects aren't so bad.
She makes stats fun and easy. Her lectures are enjoyable and high energy. There is almost no homework for this class and exams aren't too difficult. You do need to show up for class, but it is stats you kinda should
She says that she will make statistics simpler and easy but she only made me dislike it more, that being said, don't do this fam
Textbook and notes are used for every exam and pop quiz so make sure you actually buy your book and bring it to class, and take very good notes, they will make or break you. Most papers are group papers so learn how to work well with a group and do not submit it without revising (she can tell and she will take off points). Really interesting class!
took her SOC 502(statistics) online(Sum 2018) never saw her in person. Not for math lovers like me. not even algebra. plug and chug formulaa. minimal Stata (statistical software) explanation. On HW's the more verbose is better, spell out everything (mean,p,Z,t in ()) Copy and paste stat explanations, put in your own nouns and numbers
Took this class for fun because it seemed cool and I wanted to have an easy class to go with my difficult senior capstone. It is NOT fun. It is NOT easy. She does not teach this like a 400 level class. Group assignments are difficult and unclear. She is an excellent professor and should be teaching higher level SOC classes for majors only.
You get a group assigned on the first day. Its unreasonable to have the amount of group work we had. Exams and quizzes have little to do with class material. Dont take unless youre a soc major
She is very passionate about stats and teaches with a lot of energy. Nonetheless, she is very fair with pop quizzes (despite them being kind of annoying) and allows people to work together. Everything is open book, so there's not as much pressure to cram. However, the work can be confusing at times. Only take if you love math or take it with others
Constant use of vulgar language and inappropriate projection of political views upon the class was awful. Encouraged "working with other students outside of class on homework", but then proceeded to accuse myself and other classmates of plagiarism. Material was presented way too quickly with little explanation, and exams were nearly impossible. RIP
Catherine was great in he beginning of the semester, but then her true colors came out towards the middle of the semester... she picks out favorites like its her job and if you arent one of them she is rude and inconsiderate to students. Her attitude was very immature with constant vulgar language, and obnoxious macho-man personality.
It isnt required to go to class but she does have pop quizzes every once in a while. She does open notes exams, however that means the questions are harder. She is very passionate about the subject, and it shows it makes the class enjoyable. If you do take the class I suggest working really hard on your 2 assignments and showing up to class.
I absolutely love her as an advisor but as a prof shes tough. I definitely had to work hard to do well, didn't skip class, paid attention. Wish I studied and reviewed more before tests. HW takes a ton of time, but there's only a few of them. I wish we had HW that related to the exam questions. I did horrible on exams, but amazing on HWs.
She is literally the best professor I've ever had.
Fantastic, enthusiastic teacher. When the whole class did bad on an exam, she gave us makeup work. When that still didn't satisfy her, she scaled everyone's grade up. Said she cared less about grades and more about us understanding the material. Always open to help/ask questions over email/go over exams with you. Enjoyed class a lot.
Prof Moran is really passionate and a hard worker. She is always present and prepared. Really caring and makes each day enjoyable. Very helpful with questions. I do wish there was smaller, more frequent homework grades.
This class when taken online has to be the worst college class I have taken thus far, and I am almost 50 credits through college. I highly recommend taking another course in stats because Catherine and her TA are extremely hard graders -The class averages for HW's have been under 70 consistently.
Professor Moran was an amazing teacher. I was also able to designate this class as honors and she was nothing but helpful during the entire process- especially through COVID and being online. She was always willing to help, zoom, anything for her students. She put our understanding above all else. Would love to take her again.
This is by far the worst and most difficult class I've taken at UNH. She says that she's there to help, but makes students feel dumb during her zoom office hours and just refers them back to the 3 45 minute power points. The homework is graded WAY too hard and exams are difficult. On top of that, it was an asynchronous math class... never again!!!!
Professor Moran made statistics interesting by using research data regarding pertinent recent events. So we weren't just learning the equations for statistics. If you are a social sciences geek and you need a QR credit I highly recommend this class!
She gives no time during her lectures for us to try out the "learned" methods, and it seems as though she intentionally tries to annoy the class a lot of times. Hardest grader I probably have ever had in my entire life. Nobody does good on Homework assignments because they are graded. THAT HARD. Imagine. Alot of times the TA sees the issue and lets
She uses iClickers a lot for pop quizzes so make sure you bring them to every class. If you don't you won't be able to take it and you will get a zero. You also always have to show up because there could be a pop quiz anytime.
This class took YEARS off my life, and the final hasn't even happened yet. Super hard grader. Prof Moran seems to hold lasting grudges about students, and will give you worse grades if you don't come to office hours. Made me feel stupid at office hours anyway. Average score on 100-point homeworks were Ds. Literally unbelievable for a 402 class.
I love Professor Moran. I had her last semester and I was motivated to go to every class. Her lectures weren’t boring and she’s very interesting to listen to. You have a chapter or 2 to read each week and sporadical research participation assignments. If you need to fulfill your social science credit this is a great choice
heavily liberal and wants you to know it
I loved SOC400! It was my favorite class this semester and I 100% recommend it to people interested. It is lecture heavy so I wouldn't recommend skipping, but I was never bored in lectures. We had really engaging discussions and the exams were open book. Moran is a great prof and I'd love to take another one of her classes.
Professor Moran was the worst professor I have ever had.She not only does not care if you have an excused absence she will never be there for you;she not only didn't believe me abt a fam death, but asked for COD and obituary. She stalks your canvas to make sure you're spending 'enough' time on her class(if its below 3hrs/week she will not help you)
Catherine is very quirky and engaging. Her lectures can be long but they are very interesting. This is a great class to satisfy the social science discovery requirement and if you show up and at least skim the textbook you will do fine
She is very passionate about what she teaches. Took this for a discovery credit and it was one of m favorites. She can be a a bit hard on grading and her classes are very lecture heavy but the lectures are quite interesting. Would definitely recommend for anyone looking to get their social science discovery over with
I really love taking a class with Professor Moran, her lectures are always entertaining and you learn a lot from just one class. I'd say this course is more lecture heavy than anything, minimal assignments weekly, quite a bit of reading, but manageable. Her tests are more about applying concepts, but if you attend class you'll do fine!
This was probably one of my least favorite classes I've ever taken. She assigned a lot of homework and went through topics and content very quickly. Although, she was understanding when it came to asking for help or an extension (ahead of time only). Each class was also the same, lecture with a slide show presentation and occasional pop-quizzes.
I loved this class!!! There is some out of class work, not much. Quizzes and small writing assignments, and she has random in class assignments. She is very understanding and wants you to do well. If you need anything, she will more times than not help you. Very kind human and she has good intentions.
Dr. Moran was a great professor. Lectures were always super easy to understand. Attendance not mandatory but assignments difficult without it. She assigned a TON of homework especially close to finals that I think was a little unfair. Tests open note. I would recommend if your other courses are lighter in work!
Catherine knows how to make a student want to learn. She is so enthusiastic in her lectures and you can see how passionate she is about the topic and it makes class so much more enjoyable. She has three online exams that are all multiple choice, weekly online quizzes that you get two attempts on, and in-class activities roughly once a week.
She was very enthusiastic. Very nice as well. She had a lot of energy and tried to keep students engaged. Attendance is not mandatory, but recommended. Would take her again.
Prof Moran is fine. She obviously has favorites and is not willing to work with you if you are not a favorite. Also, she definitely has political opinions, and she will try to teach them to you. I agree with her, but it can feel strange.
Heavy liberal and if you don't agree good luck Enthusiatic but because shes trying to change student opinions to agree with her own Felt strange and forced even when I agreed Extremely biased for a soc teacher. Also she is happy to fail you. You can ask for help and get a whole lecture about how her class is attendanced based info Ididntlikeher
Professor Moran is passionate about what she does. As someone who really struggles with math, the stats course was challenging would've been worse with anyone else. She makes it clear that she is more than willing to help outside of class if needed and she has it set up to where even if you tank an important assignment your grade won't plummet.
You will unleash the dragon if you try to pack up early or try to take a picture of the board-I'm warning you. Kinda nice sometimes but so passive aggressive. You won't learn anything all semester and your brain will be fried leaving class as u retain nothing. One of the few times we were given physical work-which was actual helpful-was a pop quiz.
Long Lectures. Doesn't take attendance but will have random worksheets in class sometimes which count as participation (so you never know if class is skippable or not). If u ask a question she doesn't like, she will ridicule u. Also chooses weird and controversial topics for all assignments (body discomfort, sex ed in children, racial questions).
Tests don't align with the study guides and she gives these long homework assignments that you need to either pay for the software on your laptop to use, or find one of the few library computers that have it. There are 2 big tests and a final at the end of sem.
There are 3 exams. She does let you have a cheat sheet for test tho! If that even helps you pass which it probably won't (had to scale both soc stats class grades cause average was so low...43% not jk) Honestly just confusing. Take any other stats class if you can.
Moran is a very enthusiastic professor which makes the class captivating. Her exams are extremely hard, despite the class material being pretty intuitive. On top of that, it requires a lot of reading as just about 25% of the course material is in the textbook. Why am I paying for a class when I need to read 25% of the info via textbook. Do not rec
