Personally, don't like lectures with Powerpoint, profs can fit 2 much info in it, making it hard to copy down, and most of the info will never come up again. Gives hard tests, but its not that bad when tests happen only 3 chapters at a time, better than a mt and an accumlative final.

Slides were hard to follow and lectures were not very engaging. Cathy would go on long tangents about her specific research projects, many of which weren't pertinent to the actual course content. I would show up to class for the clicker question and tune out the lecture. If you just study from the textbook you should be fine. As well midterm

The online textbook and practice quizzes ARE VERY HELPFUL. USE THESE RESOURCES!! Her lectures are quite interesting and helpful. Instead of a cumulative final, we had three quizzes spread out evenly throughout the term worth 30% each, all mc. Honestly, the easiest course I've had so far. Take the negative reviews with a grain of salt.

Her lectures are boring and makes me sleepy. She basically just reads off the powerpoint slides and relate it to her life and research. Very dependent on the TA. She doesn't make her class engaging and the final grade is solely based on 3 quizzes and online quizzes. This is a heavy reading course, but if you want med school, you have to take this.

Gonna be honest, Cathy sounds like she doesnt understand the content herself. Im pretty sure her TA makes the lecture slides for her and then she wings the lectures. I am very bored in her lectures; and the lectures dont correlate with the textbook at all.

Dr. Rankin is a great person, but not a great prof. She gives weekly quizzes that you only get 10 minutes for and midterms you only get 20 minutes for. You have to be able to regurgitate entirely memorized information in 20 minutes - not an easy thing to do. Quiz averages were 4/10 and midterms 9/20.

Lectures are dull, TA does all the work for her, she just shows up and rambles. Tests are all about memorization of random facts and have nothing to do with understanding concepts. She reads each sentence on the slides and doesn't elaborate or provide more info. I go for clicker points and learn rest on my own. Not cumulative tho, which is nice.

Cathy is one of the worst professors I have ever encountered. She goes on self-serving anecdotal tangents during her lectures and doesnt seem to always know her own material. She shows a lack of respect for her students and TAs, who are left to pick up the pieces. I wish UBC would fire her so future students dont waste their time or money.

Catherine was kind, however not a very engaging lecturer. 90% of our grade came from 3 multiple choice tests that consisted of specific, and challenging questions. I found it extremely hard to do well in her class as there were not many chances for us to demonstrate our knowledge. Our TA was great and picked up a lot of the slack.

This class is definitely not a walk in the park, but Dr. Rankin makes it super interesting and if you work hard you'll do well. The grades are spread out across many short quizzes, three long quizzes and two papers. Keep in mind that this is a neuroscience course, so arts students who aren't used to science courses might find it harder.

Dr. Rankin did not know her own material but expected students to recall random historical facts that she briefly read during lectures. She is monotone and does not show much enthusiasm in her teachings. Additionally, she did not seem to want students to succeed. Her exams did not give students enough time and the expected average was always 60%

Switch your professor while you can. lectures were quite boring and lecture slides aren't that informative but include concepts that aren't included in the textbook so there is no way of learning them. Tests were really weird. Tested on minor details that she once mentioned in the class rather than on concepts that show your understanding.

Her TA obviously did all of her work for her, she never knew what was going on and was never prepared for class. She read directly off the slides that she obvi didn't make herself (terribly monotone and slow as well). She often forgot or confused main concepts but expected students to remember tiny useless details on tests. WORST TEACHER IVE HAD

I really liked Rankin. Her lectures are not the most engaging things in the world, but they are quite clear and the material itself isn't bad. The quizzes are a lot to keep up with sometimes, but if you follow her suggestions of making flashcards based off the note packages, you can do really quite well. The 2 papers are also not too bad either.

On the first day of class w/ Dr.Rankin, I was shocked at how she designated students into bad and good ones. I genuinely believe this violates UBC policy. She stated that a lot ppl failed quizzes at the beginning, but the quiz avg went higher at the end of the term, this is because the "bad ones" dropped out of the class. disrespectful.

Dry, boring lectures and expects you to write down memorized information on quizzes in 10 minutes! There is a quiz every week which means you have to actively study for this course making it overwhelming. The quizzes are graded harshly, they take off points because you didn't copy exactly the info from the lecture slides!

This is the absolute worst class I have ever had the misfortune of taking. Prof. Rankin is the most uncaring prof I have ever had at UBC. Her class is disproportionately more difficult than it needs to be, the grading and assignment criteria are vague and non-sensical. thank god for the TA's, who carry this class. AVOID at all costs.

Do NOT ignore the bad ratings. Dr. Rankin's class is terrible and is extremely picky on how your quizzes are marked. I have been struggling all term and her instructions for papers and quizzes are very vague. You have to predict some of the questions to do well on quizzes and it's a guessing game and waste of time. Please avoid her at all costs.

Dr. Rankin is a tough grader, this is a challenging course, and she is upfront about that from day 1. The class average is low in the beginning and improves a lot by the end. I loved Prof Rankin as a person, like genuinely so sweet and kind, that being said, this was the worst course I've taken. I'm in Sauder with a high average and this course was the hardest thing I've ever taken. 90% of your grade is midterms, but the questions are convoluted and ambiguous. TA does everything and the course as a whole is poorly run.
