The class is extremely interactive, but entertaining compared to other 217s. Attendance was basically manditory. Take this course with her if you really want to get into the course material, if you are looking for a high grade and no effort, keep looking
Awesome teacher..loved her!
Not the greatest teacher... nice and obviously cares and wants us to learn but she tries to do to many "interactive" games in a class with 500 ppl and of course noboday participates... and to do this she RACES thru lecture slides leaving you with no time to grasp the concepts....
One of the best prof in my undergraduate year. Absolutely enjoyed her class. She tries her very best to get each materials drilled down to our heads. Exams are fair, do the readings and lecture notes. Truly recommend her for students who hasn't take any psyc courses before. She cares about her students and wants each individuals to do well. Thanks!
not bad considering she teaches a class of 500. tries to be helpful at times. slides and lectures are always rushed
Doesn't exactly test what she teaches.. spends a lot of class time with interactive examples. These are interesting, but never really on the exams. You basically have to memorize every term in the textbook to do well on her tests. If you have a background in Bio, you will have an advantage. If you REALLY like memorizing, take this course!
Lectures are very clear and her notes are good for emphasizing what she wants us to learn. Study her notes and text and you'll do well. Lots of work though because of 3 midterms, 1 600-word paper and a cumulative final. Advantage to the midterms is that it's easier to study for the final. She's got a good sense of humor and makes class interesting.
The prof is great, she really cares about the students and she tries to help as much as possible. If you are planning to major in psyc, definitely take this course. But be prepared to work! lots of assignments and papers. Still a good course to take though.
Her classes are tedious and boring, creates a false impression that students know the material to shock them in the exam- claims its a new course and she's still learning to create the exams for it. Active learning papers were easy but annoying, the term paper submission was a disaster due to PeerScholar, and UNFAIR grades. TA not much help. AVOID!
A teaching prof, not a research prof. As a result she is very put-together, her lectures are extremely organized, but she lacks knowledge outside of the course material. Treats us like 6 year olds - very kind, very approachable, but dumbs everything down. LOTS of work. Material is very easy, but she somehow makes it difficult. Average prof.
Super energetic, passionate prof who really cares about what she teaches. She's able to answer on-the-spot questions about any branch of psychology and gave our class links and resources for further research. She encourages discussion and after-hours help and is supportive in all aspects. It's refreshing to see a prof who really loves their job.
If you attend class and read the textbook, you are sure to do fine. She posts all her slides online, but in class she discusses studies and such more in depth and is very likely to test on that material on midterms or final. She's entertaining to listen to because she is so enthusiastic about psych.
She's very, very organized with her lectures (all Powerpoints and posted online). Also very nice person - helpful to talk to when confused about assignments. Good proff -- be sure to keep up with the readings or else you won't know the material.
Favourite professor of life! Absolutely love the examples, they're extremely helpful. Quick paced lectures, and a lot of reinforcement of textbook material.
Very clear and indeed organised with her lectures. However has very little knowledge outside the course material, hence sticks cleanly to the course material.
Goes by course material....rushes, but overoll keeps the class interesting
One of the best 'teaching' professors I've had : she actually cares if you learn and her teaching style is fun and accessible - went into this research class dreading it (hate science) but she makes it easy/fun. Must read textbook for exam or you'll do badly!
A very passionate professor who loves teaching. However, she has high expectations on her students and her midterm was hard with a lot of tricky questions. She can come out with questions from any corner of the books and lecture materials. Just make sure you pay attention to her classes, do all the readings and look at the questions carefully.
Are these people serious? If you have any passion toward psychology I do not recommend taking it with this professor. She is ever so thrilled to have a PHD in psychology and talks way too much about her failed studies. I went into this class with a passion in psychology and i am leaving never wanting to pick up a psychology book again.
She's very approachable and willing to make herself accessible to students. However, her exams are hard. Make sure you read the texts and go to class. This class is a lot of work - she herself said it's a class and a half. Also, she has a lot of material to cover so expect for some things to be rushed.
Positive: Friendly, approachable, helpful and tries hard to spark interest in students. Negative (and a big one): Hard exams. Other profs teaching the same course give much easier tests with only multiple choice, not only does she give long answer questions but her multiple choice questions are hard.
She is a new teacher that enjoys her job. She is very fun and almost always makes jokes. Very clear in explaining things, and makes herself available in office hours/after class. Her lectures usually include interesting powerpoint slides. Tests are A LITTLE on the hard side, but if you read the text and take notes you will do good in her course.
Catherine Rawn is AWESOME! She will pretty much to anything to make sure you understand the material. She makes class fun and she's really helpful. Really great prof
Extremely difficult exams, tricky multiple choice questions, and difficult short/long answers. However, she is a relatively good teacher, high energy, puts effort into explaining concepts. I do believe that she does a very very good job preparing students for 218 and is extremely good at explaining difficult concepts!
I was quite angry that I was stuck with her, seeing that other sections were all full. Her exams were hard, no matter how much I have studied for them. I was more livid when other sections received a much higher average. She said that overall no one failed the course, but clearly a lie, as I know a few people in my class who failed it....
She is engaging and interesting and tries to get you excited about the material. Lots of freedom in the projects although the tests were difficult and required a lot of studying.
Her test are not even related to the textbook/what she says.
Awesome prof! Psychology became a really interesting topic because of her.
Catherine's an amazing teacher and I'd recommend her to anyone! It's rare that you can find a UBC prof that cares so much about education.
Tests were hard, but she's willing to help you out if you put the effort into asking questions in-class, and in office hours. Txtbook use was high. Questions for exams came straight out of lesson objectives; simply summarize what you learned and that's it.
If you're confused about the contrast in opinion from earlier comments, it's because this prof is SUPER FUN PASSIONATE ENERGETIC - all you can ask for in an amazing prof EXCEPT! ITS EXTREMELY HARD TO DO WELL! - which makes her hard to like after you get your scores back. The person who had the highest score in my class got an 86. just sayin =/
I think that she means well but she treats us all like we're little kids with the way she lectures. It's not terrible but I would prefer a different instructor next time.
Best prof at UBC hands down. She loves what she does and it shows in her teaching skills. I definitely recommend taking any and every class Prof. Rawn teaches!
Definitely one of the best teachers I've had. As to negative commenter: Haters gon' hate. Classes were highly engaging, assignments were minimal but relevant, tests were all multiple choice and easy to study for, but still made you learn the material. Students that a) do readings and b) don't sleep in class, will easily pass with decent grades.
I loved this course. The prof is amazing and she knows what to teach. Rawn knows how students get obtain information and learn stuff and she tries her best to help us learn. Although she's not an easy marker and you should do much work to get a good grade, I loved the course.
You will either love or hate Rawn. On the negative, she treats students as if they were kids. Course components are overhyped and she's a tough marker. The positive would be that she is extremely approachable for help. and she is a fair lecturer. Psychology students, avoid her if don't want your passion for the field diminished. Not recommended.
hard hard hard. unpredictable and unfair mc finals.
She was great, she talked about this site she said it's not random selection, has an over reliance on anecdotes, and lacks construct reliability :) she's a smart woman and passionate about the subject matter and actually cares about the success of her students.
tough marker, very precise on everything. if you don't want your passion for psychology diminished, I would avoid her. she talks to you like you were a 3rd grader, but gives you material like you were a doctoral student. extremely methodical, didn't really suit me as a prof. I wouldn't take her course again.
She is an amazing prof. Very engaging and inspiring. Her tests are challenging in a good way in that they are not just memorization of a text book like in some other classes.
Although her exams are often really hard, she's a very fun prof. She's always well prepared for her lectures (with nice and clear ppt slides) and I never fell asleep in her class because her lectures are never boring.
Great teacher. Engaging, thorough and interesting. The tests were not too hard.
i am very disappointed at the difficulty level of the exams for a first year course. The class was good, but the exams absolutely crushed me my effort of coming to every single class and doing the readings did no justice. she should reconsider the difficulty of the exams. You have no time to answer each question, very very hard to do well.
Nice prof, very clear with that she expects from students and teaches using a lot of techy cool stuff. But class is hard and lectures can get very boring at times.
Great prof for a stats course!! It was a tough course but she couldn't have been more helpful, I owe my grade to her and her amazingly picked TAs, assignments are tough so make sure to go to the TAs for hints and help, otherwise, if you just try and do what she recommends, you'll do well in this notoriously tough course.
She is a very fun and engaging teacher! Her classes are interesting and will not make you sleep like some other profs. Definitely recommend her class if you're considering to take psyc 100
Catherine is awesome! She is so helpful and clear, and her office hours are fantastic. It was her first time teaching PSYC 218 (stats), so give her a break if not everything was perfect. Stats is not difficult if you practice the problems and don't cram. She always scales to make sure people get as high marks as possible.
Very interesting lectures and she was always easy-going. Her classes were very engaging and I really enjoyed my time. On the other hand, her midterms and finals were quite difficult. Also, would have to say that the papers were graded quite harshly.
Rawn is engaging and nice as a prof but the tests are really hard. The final projects were graded harshly as well. If stats is not your thing, I would recommend other profs for sure.
Dr. Rawn sincerely cares for her students and provides all the resources you need to succeed, if you're willing to put in the effort. She doesn't run "GPA boosters" but she does TEACH extremely well. If you want to actually learn psychology, her PSYC 100 is great. If not, don't be angry you get a C back on that exam you didn't study for.
One of the best professors in all UBC, for sure. She is not only knowleadgeable, and passionate, but really helpful as well. Her collaboration in the text has enhanced the overall quality of it. I recommend it if you REALLY want to lean, no excuses!
AMAZING! This was my favourite course this year and I wasn't expecting it to be. By far one of the BEST profs I have ever had. She has designed this course so that the info is actually useful to us as students and in our lives beyond. She is extremely willing to help if you need it. Exams are not easy, but you can do well if you study hard.
She is well known for caring about student learning. She is very open-minded and passionate about psychology. As for the course, do go to class and actually pay attention. She is a great teacher, so make good use of her lectures. Reading the textbook helps me get a more detailed understanding of concepts.
Professor Rawn was probably my favourite professor here at my first semester at UBC. She made what seemed to be a course with dry course content engaging and she kept her lectures interactive and fun. I highly suggest enrolling in her section if you have her for PSYC 101, 102, or any other PSYC course!
She's really passionate about psychology. But her midterms are quite tricky. She has 3 midterms, compared to other classes that only have 1 or 2. Final is 80 MC w/ 2 short write ups. Not that bad cause we can pick any topic to write about. HOWEVER, other PSYC101 finals have only MC for final. If I had the choice, would rather take w/ another prof.
Midterms are tricky, watch out for wording. She is helpful but not very organized. Often we would not get through more than 1/3 of lecture slides because she allowed the class to go off on tangents.
Awesome prof who is excited about the course. Really cares for the well-being of students but emphasizes that YOU have to put forth your own effort. Others complain about having 3 midterms in this class, but chunking it down helps I find. Go to lectures: they're interesting and give you more info than ppt slides. Made me want to continue psyc!
Love Dr. Rawn, she is so sweet and so passionate about psychology! Great intro class to take, lectures are super fun. She really cares about her students and want all of us to succeed. Her tests are tricky, but attending lectures is key. She gives out an extra 5% if you do the HSPs and if you speak up in class, she will remember your name!
She's great! Incredibly peppy and happy. Exams are hard.
Not a fan, her exams are VERY hard, she has super high expectations. I really didn't like her, I'm registered as a student with a disability, and had to reschedule one of my midterms to get surgery and she almost gave me a zero, even though i submitted a dr. note a WEEK in advance! I had to complain to the board about her in order to write it.
DO NOT TAKE if you are an athlete or will otherwise have to reschedule an exam/midterm. Decent teacher but terrible in this area. Is insane about test taking.
Awesome, passionate prof. Her exams are easy if you go to class and read the textbook. You have to read the textbook if you want to do well in this course, because she does a lot of very involved examples in class so we didn't have time to look at everything. The papers you write are peer reviewed, which could be a positive or negative I guess.
Rawn is an amazing prof who keeps lectures very interesting and has a very structured course. Setbacks were writing mini papers and peer reviewing which was a big hassle. Easy to study for- review her slides and read the textbook religiously and you'll be absolutely fine! Plus, she's super friendly and inspiring!
Class sizes are big, so material moves along rather swiftly. Pretty good class over all.
Best prof ever! If you spend the time to review the material, you will succeed - not just memorizing material but actually applying it! Her lectures are amazing and her learning objectives really help to guide your studying.
DO NOT MEMORIZE FOR TESTS. She tests you based on understanding of concepts, as in giving you examples and you evaluate them. 3 midterms so be ready. Go to class, pretty fun and interesting lectures.
Fun classes but her tests are kind of complicated, all application. Don't just memorize everything. It really helps if you actually go to class.
she is an excellent professor
She is a really good prof and seriously knows her material. But there are 3 midterms and one final and 5 assignments. If you miss class, you are screwed. A lot of the material covered in class WILL be on the final -but otherwise its very straight forward. If you read the book and go to your lectures you will get an EASY A.
Her lectures are super fun and interesting! Only downside is that there are 3 midterms, 5 mini writing assignments AND all the midtermsfinal require you to spend the last portion redoing the test with 4 other people, which I find completely useless and doesn't really help your grade.
Catherine Rawn is the best prof I've had at UBC, her lectures are amongst the most interesting and engaging I've ever had. She genuinely cares about her students and her success, and she gives you all the tools need to do well. That being said, her tests are a little harder than the average 100-level psych class.
A very passionate, inspiring and friendly prof. She writes 'Your grade on this test does not represent your value as a person.' What more can you ask?
For my whole life I loved psychology but this woman makes it so hard. I have taken two other psych courses and they were all fair and gave students reasonabale amount of material to learn. But this one is too much. She makes the lectures interesting but believe me the tests are so hard. She doesn't cover everything but expect you to read everythin
Amazing prof. Very passionate, and cares about her students, even though the classes are huge. You need to go to lectures, but she makes them interesting, and I was always looking forward to class. Tests are tough but doable.
Some call her a tough marker, but as long as you listen in her classes and do some of the readings I found the tests to be not that difficult. She also is super knowledgable and tries to answer every question a student might ask before they even ask it. She gave us candy on halloween and often used games as teaching methods, making every class fun.
Loved having first year Psych courses with her! Granted her tests can be a little tough, but as long as you listen to her, especially with her learning objectives and read the textbook, you will be fine! Lectures are entertaining as well as informative. Best prof I've had yet!
Catherine makes lectures interesting and fun but her exams are pretty conceptual; you MUST put effort into it in order to do well and you need to read the textbook when you study even though she doesn't use them in class. She's the sweetest prof; before our midterms she'll tell us, "these exams don't define your value as a person"
Boring. Relatively hard compared to other first year classes. Her tests are abnormally hard compared to what she teaches u in class. must read lecture notes and textbook if you want a decent grade. wouldn't recommend, take it with another prof if u want to take psych 101. too many little assignment, why not just have 1 midterm, 1 final?
super boring lectures! She believes that her lectures are enthusiastic whereas it's not! I got no interest in taking her lectures. terrible lecture slides. all ends in question marks. no logic in her teaching.
Ridiculous course, they intentionally make the exams absurd in order to maintain the "68%" average for psych courses. Literally have to memorize everything in the notes and book in order to do well, nothing conceptual about this course at all. Definitely would not recommend as an elective, only take if absolutely keen on studying psych further.
Though the lecture involved lots of activities and encourage students to engage, lecture slides have little logic. Too much examples in lecture sometime hard to get the point. Lots of strange words in exam, no matter how hard you review, it hard to get a grade that higher than 75.
She is a nice lady but is too excited about the lecture material which doesn't resonate with everyone in the same way, due to the course topic at hand. Unrealistic expectations as far as grades, it's a second year course, it should be possible to get over 85%.
Material was incredibly dry and boring, but she made it bearable. Her quizzes and tests are incredibly difficult. No matter how much you read or think you've got the material nailed, you'll still fall on class average. m/c was harder than the open answer. The research paper is harshly marked so spend a lot of time on that.
Can't understand her lecture slides no matter how hard I try to get into her world. her tests are hard and she never scales up. Don't take class with her or you will be depressed for the whole term.
She's a kind teacher and explains things very well. However, her exams are usually tough and all the questions asked are application style questions which are not easy to prepare for.
Dr. Rawn is an amazing professor, who always makes it clear that she really cares for students, which is a hard feat with a class of 300. She is helpful, sweet, inspiring, and gives very interesting and thorough lectures. That being said, her tests are VERY conceptual; make sure you read the course slides and the textbook for a full understanding!
Great prof who's lectures are interesting and engaging. Go to class because she likes to use examples from class in her tests.
Dr. Rawn is inspirational, you can tell from all the comments below that she is a passionate teacher and is GOOD at what she does, and it makes all the difference!BUT do keep in mind that her tests are very conceptional, you need to know how to apply the concepts. STUDY THE SLIDES!! many questions are also from what she talks about in the lectures!
Anyone who gave her a poor review were obviously looking for an easy A and were disappointed in the outcome. Catherine is the nicest and sweetest lady and if you pay attention, keep up with the readings (I.E. PUT EFFORT INTO THE COURSE) you will do well! If you are struggling, TALK TO HER. She is so approachable. This is my 4th semester with her
- Great, informative lectures - Passionate for psychology and passes that down to the students interested in psychology - Grading is very correct
Tests tend to be kind of hard. Material is straight forward but she likes to ask confusing questions
Always very positive and genuinely cares for students! She also always tries (and succeeds) to make class more fun
The world needs more people like Dr. Rawn. I went to her office hours crying because I failed the first midterm, and she suggested strategies for dealing with emotional reactions to stats. Plus I'm certain she has magic powers - you'll check your phone during lecture at 12:23, and then suddenly it'll be 12:50 and you won't even know what happened.
Cares about students, and tries hard. But treats it more like a popularity contest to appeal to students, rather than showing the inherent interest in the material to win us over.
Lectures are interesting and worth going to, and test material is often based on studies and videos discussed from lectures that you can't just learn from the text. Heavy textbook reading too though, and several short writing assignments throughout the term.
Her tests are challenging since they're situational based and application but totally possible to do well. Be sure to study her slides since she puts a lot of "class only" material on her tests. Good course but not your typical "easy first year class." She's a really nice lady too!
She was a helpful and kind prof and there was lots of opportunities made for helping students. However she often had to rush through certain portions because of poor planning. Many readings assigned and they are often very long so you have to keep ontop of them. However she is willing to answer question in and out of class.
She's a really nice lady and you can really do well on her tests if you study for it. Her tests are quite conceptual though so prepare yourself well. Study her slides too since she puts a lot of material from her slides ("lecture only material") on her test.
Dr. Rawn is one of the best psyc professors there is. She speaks concepts with clarity and is very engaging. There are clips, games, discussions to make the class lively. Though her exams may be tough to get high marks, all you really need to do is ensure you go through her presentation slides and you are good to go. Had so much fun in her class.
Great and engaging prof. Makes data analysis interesting. Very motivating if you are willing to work hard.
Dr. Rawn is an amazing prof, with great passion for psychology. Her tests are hard, but, can do well if you study well. The tests are heavily based on lectures, but readings are also very important.
Beware. This was the hardest class I have ever taken. I bet that Prof. Rawn is a fantastic professor in other classes, but think twice before taking any "Experimental" new classes like this one. Terribly un-organized, unethical amount of homework, and the worst grading strategy I've ever encountered. I loved the content, but it was unenjoyable.
Dr. Rawn challenges her students to think critically and independently. The first couple weeks was spent building the reading list. Then we were asked to teach ourselves. Oh, we graded ourselves too.
Overall, Dr. Rawn is a super enthusiast teacher who cares a lot about her students. I really liked her as a person and prof. She makes her class fun and engaging, but doesn't make her tests easy. If you try hard, all do great.
The material for 217 can be kind of confusing sometimes but Catherine does a really good job of explaining it so go to class if you want to get a better understanding of what you're learning. A lot of application style questions on the test but they're easy if you study. Your final grade really depends on your group members though
Challenging Tests!! If you don't go to class you won't do well. Very sweet in person, and appears to care about her students, but a hard marker. Lots of work and deductions if you don't get everything done and more!
She's engaging, kind, thoughtful and really cares about her students. Tests are aceable: -If you know her learning objectives inside and out, you'll be fine for lectures. -For the textbook, know key terms/concepts. Though random facts are sometimes asked, I'd say you can get a solid 90 without knowing them. (101/102)
PSYC 218 is just about as hard as everyone says it will be. Keep up with readings, show up to class, take advantage of office hours, and you'll do alright. Dr. Rawn knows her stuff but is an impossible grader.
Stats isn't the easiest thing to learn, but Rawn made it bearable. Definitely go to lectures; she actually makes stats understandable and her enthusiasm helps keep us engaged. Her exams are pretty straightforward as long as you actually go to class/ take notes. She rlly cares about her students, unlike many other profs who focus on their research.
She's a teaching-stream faculty member in the psyc dept and it shows. Super caring & tries her best to reach out to students to improve our learning experience with stats. Lectures are clear and never boring; actually made stats interesting for me as she speaks in a language that normal humans can understand. Tests were very fair and she scaled up.
I feel that in the lecture she seems to be very engaging but one on one she seem not to care. It seems she is putting on a show in the lecture or just more conformatble talking to a group of students than individual one
There are only a few things more boring than statistics, but Dr. Rawn somehow makes it ok. Her TAs are tough on grading and her exams are tough. You might think that you did everything perfect, but it is not true. You have to go to lectures and to office hours if you don't understand something.
Her lectures are inspirational, but exams are hard. Even though you read through the textbook and her PowerPoint, you might not get a high mark. Need to work hard in this course.
She made me fall in love with psych! An amazing prof
Dr. Rawn (although hates this website), is approachable, engaging, encourages participation, and sweet both in class and out of class. She works really hard to memorise names of many students in her 300+ lectures, and tries to explain her choices in how she teachers her course. (2- stage exams, peer marking etc.) I wish she taught more classes.
Really listen in on her lectures because shell add things shes talked about in her chapter tests but lectures are definitely worth going to. Shes funny and her materials are understandable, and also does weekly office meetups with certain students to give them a chance to ask questions.
I was not looking forward to taking research methods as it sounded fairly boring but Dr. Rawn was extremely engaging in lecture and really motivated me to pay attention and learn, not just in the classroom but outside as well. Tests were difficult and contingent on a thorough understanding of the material but if you study hard you can do fine
Entertaining lectures, which is impressive considering how dry stats can be. Good prof, but tests are oddly formatted - with only 35 minutes to do the individual portion! The formula sheet she gives is also frustrating, with only partial formulas. Pretty much expect to spend time memorizing formulas cause you basically don't get them for tests.
Catherine is a professor who is super enthusiastic about Psychology and cares greatly for her students! I was worried about research methods because the material is awfully dry, but Catherine made the best out of it and I enjoyed her lectures. Took her for PSYC217 and I gladly chose to take 218 with her as well. (Do go to office hours though!)
This is not an easy course for a psyc major student, but Dr. Rawn tries her best to bring the best out of us. Her exam was hard but fair if you study for them you will get a good grade. A course that prepare you for the course that takes place afterward in psychology. Treat those homework assignment seriously, for they worth a ton of mark!!!!!
Listen she seems like a nice person and all and she's a good lecturer but her slides are really confusing to study later on and her attendance is based on clickers that mark you both on attendance and whether you got the questions right or not which I really didn't like. Also her tests are super hard even though the material is super easy.
she grades unnecessarily tough. you wont know your grade going into the final. she makes you learn through the textbook that she writes. she doesnt really teach you how to write a research report and then grades you poorly on it; shell most likely refer you to HER textbook. this class isnt worth your money.
Yes 217 and 218 are tough courses but Dr Rawn explains them so well. Genuinely the best 217 &218 prof. Her classes are very interactive. As long as you go to class and actually listen, you'll get a pretty good grade. She's also very approachable and helpful.
Dr Rawn is an incredible lecturer, uses plenty of examples. I found that reading the textbook word for word helped me understand PSYC 217 and 218 the best. She stresses not to read the whole thing, but with gaps in her lectures, it was best to read the textbook. Ended up with 77 in 217 and 86 in 218 by reading the textbook, and always reviewing!
If you have seen just 10 mins of one of Catherine's lectures you would know exactly why I am writing this. She doesn't just stand in front of the class and explain, she literally jumps, lunges and screams to exaggerate points. I never thought statistics could be this interesting and engaging but some how Catherine manages to do it.
Dr. Rawn is an amazing prof. Super passionate, caring, energetic, and gives clear and engaging lectures. The assessments were also fair. Go to class. I did well in this class just by going to lectures and paying attention. There is math but it is very basic. The course is more about knowing what formulas mean and when to use them. Practice helps.
Rawn cares so much about her students learning. She makes learning stats easier to comprehend but still really pushes you when it comes to testing. I HIGHLY recommend taking this class with her!!!
Hard class to understand because it is statistics but she truly cares about each of her students and wants the best for each one of them. Would recommend taking psych 218 with her.
One of the nicest professors and genuinely cares about her students. Yes it is a hard class but research and stats is going to be hard no matter what. Do yourself a favour and at least take it with a prof who is entertaining
Dr. Rawn is a really great prof who cares about her students. Research and Statistics courses are going to be difficult for most psych majors, but Dr. Rawn is approachable and I really enjoyed her interactive lectures. I actually met some friends through her class that I can take psyshology courses with! Would definitely recommend!
She is an absolute SAINT. Her teaching style is very considerate of the fact that a lot of the students coming in have no stats experience what so ever! Her labs are awesome because they do prepare you for exams and she also gives you learning objectives so you have an idea of what to study. She truly wants you to succeed and I really appreciate it
Of all the profs I've being taught by thus far, Professor Rawn is by far the most understanding, providing flexibility in terms of how the course is weighed in order to improve how we learn. She's also been very understanding in light of this pandemic we are currently in. I'd go as far as to say she's the most caring prof I've had so far.
Dr. Rawns exams are a bit harder than usual, she really makes you work for your grade. She provides a lot of flexibility regarding the weighting of your assignments and exams - so be sure to make changes if you need them. Message her if you are experiencing troubles, she is understanding and willing to provide extensions and take late assignments!
I took Professor Rawn's PSYC 217 course, and I was expecting boring research methods but she actually makes it really interesting through applications and you can tell she's so passionate and excited about psychology and above all she cares about you and is very understanding of student struggles and makes you feel heard. definitely enrol!
I passed, I learned some things, but my expectations were definitely not exceeded. In the end, I found that most of my learning happened from the textbook. If thats your style then Dr Rawn might be for you. Shes lovely, I just would have liked to have learned more from HER.
The BEST prof I have ever had at UBC. Taking PSYC 218 was the best decision I have ever made. She is passionate about teaching stats and really wants her students to do well. I hated math before going into her class, but she really made me love statistics (something i'd never thought i would say). Take 218 with Dr. Rawn! You 100% will not regret it
Dr. Rawn creates a comfortable environment to learn and her explanations are great. I never thought I could understand statistics but seeing my interest in stats grow and confidence in my abilities grow too has been amazing! She's a one-of-a-kind professor who cares a lot about her students - if you're worried about PSYC 218, take it with Dr. Rawn!
Dr. Rawn is an incredible professor and human being I cannot say enough positive things about her. She is so kind, and she will bend over backwards to help her students thru tough content. Even if you're bad at math, you can succeed in this course if you ask her for help. Pro tip: lean your understanding on her lectures & less so on the textbook!
Honestly, I was scared for this class but Dr. Rawn made it super understandable. She's super caring and really works hard for her students.
Bless her heart, Dr. Rawn is amazing. She's so caring and accommodating for students, her lectures are engaging even when the energy in the room is low, and you can tell she's always bringing her A-game to every class. Info was always communicated well. Her course structure is accommodating for students who are struggling, which I hugely appreciate
Professor Rawn is very caring of her students. She presented the material in such a way that it did not feel heavy or difficult at all. Dr. Rawn is very understanding, encouraging and accessible outside of class
PSYC 218 with her has been smooth sailing by far! She's always energetic during her lectures and really does care about each student. She goes through everything step by step and explains it in a way that can be understood by everyone. Gives time for you to practice course concepts during class and makes sure that the foundations are nailed down.
This class was pretty difficult for me, as I am not a #s person and do not have a passion for stats. But Dr. Rawn has done a wonderful job of structuring her class in an organized, simplified, and efficient manner. She teaches with passion, does not give up on students who are struggling, and is very kind.
Although this is a tough and content-heavy class, Dr. Rawn is a very good professor who made the material flow smoothly. She really cares about students' learning and her lectures are really inspiring. I actually looked forward to coming to class! If you attend class and practice a lot you'll definitely succeed in this course.
Great prof, her lectures are very dynamic and inspirational. I really enjoyed the pathway options for grade distribution, also one of the most organized group projects I had at ubc. Sometimes you feel like you are doing a lot of homework for little points but it adds up very reasonably. Fair tests, fair grading, approachable. Highly recommend!
She seems nice but is passive-aggressive when answering questions. Her lecture slides have tons of info but look so busy and unorganized. She said she needs evenings and weekends off during finals week, girl don't we all so thank you for doing nothing. Most profs are answering questions at all hours.
Dr. Rawn is amazing! Shes very passionate about psych and wants to see her students succeed. She is a tough grader but gives us the opportunity to choose "pathways" to disperse the weightings of our tests/assignments. I switched into another one of her classes next term because she's a great prof and challenges us in the right way. Take her class!!
Dr. Rawn's enthusiastic, charasmatic, and bubbly character make her lectures on research methods both engaging and entertaining. She gives students a choice on how they want to pursue their learning through different "pathways" which makes her extremely flexible. If you are majoring Psych, I highly recommend her as she was an absolute joy.
Cares a lot about different perspectives and plans out lectures well. Course content spoken about in class WILL be on upcoming tests, so prepare for that. My biggest piece of advice is attend as many classes as possible.
Course content spoken about in class WILL be on upcoming tests, so prepare for that. Will highly suggest actually going to the classes. We were given pathway options to decide our weightage for the assignments, tests etc, which was super helpful. However the lecture slides have a lot of content on it so can be difficult to understand.
You can tell Dr. Rawn cares about her students through the way she structures her class and provides alternatives. Although there was a learning pathway that required the textbook, it's not mandatory (for exams) if you choose another grading pathway. The example questions she shows in class (slides are published) are basically what's on the exams.
12/10!!! Wonderful prof, amazing person!
Dr. Rawn is easily a top 3 professor for me thus far. She is incredibly caring and accessible outside of class. Her class is tough, won't lie, but it is so worth it in the end because she loves her job.
There are three tests, each could worth 12%, and one final. Her lectures really help you to prepare for the tests and the test does not contain trick questions. Although she has recordings, GO TO LECTURES!!! The lectures are really engaging and help promote learning. She is also very respectful and I enjoy her courses.
I was scared to take 218 but Dr. Rawn made it such an enjoyable experience. I found I really enjoyed the course content and she made it really easy to understand. She cares so much about her students and is one of the most incredible professors I have had. I would absolutely recommend taking PSYC 218 with her, it was a great experience.
I'd say Dr. Rawn is very nice and sweet and creates a welcoming environment in the class, I took 217 with her and did great however 218 was not the best for me - her slides can be a little too much sometimes but I'd nonetheless recommend her as she is very helpful too, I just had a very weak base for 218 but I still passed, go for her.
Pros: respected students, cared about students, put in a lot of effort, knows a lot about stats. Cons: a little too motivational for 9am, made tests too hard (but did scale up!), lectures were kinda boring, grading for assignments was VERY picky. Take her if you want a prof that's like a really nice, supportive, high school teacher.
Catherine Rawn was such a sweetheart! She taught the material fairly well for what it was, and put a lot of much needed enthusiasm into the topic, especially for a 9AM. Her responses to emails were always a bit vague, but you were always welcome to ask questions after class. Tests were fair, but assignments could be nitpicky.
One of the best profs I had at UBC. Super caring and encouraging and clearly cared deeply about her students. The textbook she uses is really helpful and you could do practice quizzes for completion marks. She was great at explaining concepts and since there are many different components to your grade, there are many opportunities to succeed. 10/10
Dr. Rawn is a demanding but caring professor. The class is tough, but she provides pathways to customize your grade. Attending lectures and using resources like Unstuck AI can really help you succeed.
This was a tough course. I found Dr. Rawn placed a strong emphasis studying through application but there wasn't really a way of confirming your application was correct unless you confirmed with her or a TA. The tests were quite difficult and although all written, she always wanted a very specific answer. TA's marked tests very harshly.
Dr. Rawn was a good lecturer and I liked attending her lectures. Though, I found when you asked her questions her responses sometimes felt a bit negative in tone (not sure how to explain). So, if you're sensitive you might be better taking it with someone else. As for the course itself, be sure to plan ahead with larger deadlines.
Do not take her class unless you want to struggle. Avoid.
Dr. Rawn is very sweet, almost high school teacher like – which is really helpful for something like stats. It was not the easiest course but I don't regret taking it with her! Tests are really fair and straight forward.
Catherine is a good professor, but her lectures are all over the place, jumping from future content that we won't be working with until next week, to content we've done in the past, to content in the future. Though her office hours are readily accessible, she answers questions in a roundabout fashion so you never really know where you stand.
Dr. Rawn is an absolute gem! She knows stats inside and out and makes the material super manageable, even if your math is rusty. Plus her tests are super fair. She gives off major mom vibes (even bringing us snacks!). It's clear she cares about her students' success. Take PSYC 218 with her, I PROMISE you won't regret it! LOVE HER!
5/5 Easily the fairest exams I've taken in UBC, she does not try to trick you + is straightforward. Caring prof, puts in 100% energy for a 9am, lectures recorded, even provides food. Explains confusing concepts well. People struggle in 218 because of the maths/no practice, not her as a prof. IMO this was the easiest way 218 could've been taught.
I can tell she truly cares for her students and wants them to succeed! Her exams are very straight forward with no trick questions. Everything you need in order to pass the class is in the textbook. Her lively attitude and snacks makes 9am classes more doable.
