lab manual is a joke and prelab quizzes are written too hard. I did not learn anything useful throughout the lab and they do not align with the lecture

In the past 18 years of school, I have never hated any teacher or professor in my life. it is freaking 105a but why is the lab harder than chem 115. Why? Bc she threw in a bunch of unnecessary workload into the lab and pop quizzes that literally bring your grades down when they have no reflection over your performance in the lab.

Get ready to write and read lots with chem manuals. Ive heard lots of chem prof's give students chem notebooks and supplies but Skibo makes it mandatory for students to both pay for manual and notebook. Class was not curved and most exams and labs had averages in the 60-70. Expect very little discretion and tons of work.

Pre labs and post labs are entirely busywork and the lab quizzes fluctuate between being okay and way too difficult or long for the alotted time. The labs are confusing and don't relate to the class topics that well. A lot of figuring stuff out on your own or relying on TA's to guide you through it. Final lab quiz was a joke.

Her presence alone just brings the mood down. She's so bitter for no reason. Thank God that I passed so I don't have to see her again. She also forces you to buy her lab manual and probably just sits in her office counting the cash she makes off of it. There is no way out of having her unless you completely change your major so good luck.

She wrongfully accused me of cheating on a postlab because my answers matched another student's (duh, there's only one correct answer) and I had to go to SJACS (USC's disciplinary council) to prove I didn't cheat. Awful, bitter woman who is miserable with her life

A lot of homework, including pre-labs and post labs. Never shows up to lab, and all the gradings are done by the TAs. The first time I saw her was when I went to take our final lab exam. Never responds to emails, and we get deducted points on our grade for her lack of instructions. She needs a negative rating ngl... shibal michinnyeon..

I have learned a lot from doing prelabs, postlabs, and labs (lab quizzes are not helpful) but this class can easily be much better for students if maybe we did a lab every other week and spent the lab time the week "off" doing the pre labs and post labs with the TAs! I wish Skibo would adjust after seeing all these complaints... it's not right

I know other reviews seem daunting but I'm going to be as straightforward and truthful as possible from 2 semesters of experience. The labs aren't too bad, but they're very tedious. Her instructions aren't the clearest either, but if you get a lab position on campus, her strictness prepares you well. You also never interact with her. You got this!!

DO NOT TAKE!! Skibo is the most unprofessional person I have ever met. They way she speaks to students is like she is a 15 year old trying to spite someone for being mean to her. I expect more from an authoritative figure. She responds to emails weeks or months late and none of the quiz grades were submitted until the last week of the semester.

Postlabs and prelabs every single week. I legitimately spent like 10 hours per week, if not more, on chem lab alone (not including lecture portion). To top it off, pre-lab quizzes every wk. It's a constant grind, and a lot of these labs felt pointless and poorly explained. And that final lab exam was ridiculously difficult.

It legit week one and it's already so bad-dismissive, cold, and uncaring.

Avoid Dr. Skibo at all costs. She is by far the rudest, most dismissive, least caring faculty member I have ever met. I would expect a much higher hiring standard from this institution, I would think that having basic social skills and the capability to show kindness would be necessary to work at USC, but I guess not.

You rarely interact with Skibo, but it's the TAs that are the real problem. The TAs are improperly trained, and going to office hours won't help you because they have no idea either. What are we all sitting here paying for? If you want to learn nothing for a semester while feeling like ripping your brains out, this is the class for you.

The amount of time you must dedicate to this 0 unit lab on top of lecture is unethical. Stay strong everyone.

The TAs and students are literally scared to death of Skibo. That's far from fair. It hasn't been half the semester every grade released thus far I've had to contest with the TA or skibo because they grade straight up incorrectly. ADVOCATE FOR YOUR GRADES.

Extremely condescending whenever you ask a clarifying question or make a mistake. I have no idea why she would choose to do this job because it's clear she does not care about any student.

So much work - chem pre-lab, pre-quiz, lab, and post-lab weekly. So draining and frustrating. The lab manual she makes you buy, which she wrote, is not always clear and gets confusing. This lab class was partly why I switched my major to a non-STEM major.

The amount of work every single week is incredibly draining and can be quite confusing. With the amount of work given, we should be getting extra credit hours, yet we don't. The work given by Dr. Skibo makes me feel like I am actively being weeded out of the class. Absolutely not fair, but you can't avoid her if you're a STEM major or pre-health.

I have only interacted with Dr. Skibo once over email and it was terrible. She displays no courtesy in her responses. Besides that though, you can go the entire semester without seeing or interacting with her. The real issue is the TAs. The TAs are horrible. They cannot answer even basic questions and often contradict themselves.

To study for the lab exam I would probably go to extra help and have her or the TA explain what the answers are for the questions asked to be answered in the discussion/conclusion for each experiment!!! Learned this now after finishing 105b. Other than that I have no idea how studying can help because the questions are whack and meant to trick you.

The TAs basically do all the work. I have taken this class for 1 semester and have yet to interact with Skibo in person. The lab manual we are forced to purchase and turn in receipt proof of buying is very poorly written. I spend significantly more time on the lab a week than I do on the lecture. It feels like a completely separate class.

easily the worst/most difficult class i have ever taken. she is rude, disrespectful, unhelpful, and relies on the TAs to run everything. i have never seen her in person. the lab manual is costly and filled with typos. i spend more time on her lab work than the work for all of my other classes combined. there is also 0 instruction on the assignments

she's extremely aggressive when you ask a clarifying question and i feel this quality in her shows a lack of empathy for students. very unclear lab manual-- led to confusion in the lab and assignments. if you avoid interacting with her one-on-one, you'll be okay. My lab TA also sucked so that's another bonus!

Labs are intimidating at first but you get used to it. Lab manual is vague and directions are unclear. Just hope ur TAs are good.

If not for lab, I would have finished with an A in the class. Lab is supposed to enhance the class understanding and enjoyment, but Skibo's labs unfortunately do the opposite. It is really time for USC to reassess keeping her as the lab instructor, as she decreases the quality of life at USC for so many students.

The lab is more work than the lecture itself, she is passive aggressive when answering questions. The course is not well organized, the lab lectures were not reliable or recent. The lab quizzes and the lab itself can be so unpredictable. Got so lucky to have good TAs, but the grading is and the rubrics are SO vague. This class made me miserable.

By far the worst educator of any type I've ever met. I tried to give Dr. Skibo a chance at the start of the year but from the very first time I met her she was curt at best, rude at worst. The lab section for this course takes up more time than the actual lecture section. Her final exam wasn't hard but it had a lot of trick questions and little partial credit (and no curve). Very dismissive in email.

The lab portion of 105a is hell, a constant grind. The post-labs and pre-labs are graded fairly depending on your TA but the quizzes and the final lab quiz are pretty tough.

Forced buy lab manual (that she wrote). Labs only marginally relate to topics taught in lecture, they mostly mean you have to spend a lot of time on google. Prelabs take excessive amounts of time- postlabs take even longer. She is unresponsive, uncaring, and rude to students, even if you genuinely want to learn. If you can avoid her, do it.

Spent 3x more time + effort on lab than lecture. Pre labs and post labs are long and difficult. Skibo refuses to (and doesn't let the TAs) provide any additional help on the manual that she wrote. There isn't enough equipment for everyone, so in lab you are mostly "waiting for your turn." Final is harder than lecture final and tricky.

Awful. Just plain awful. Inconsiderate, treats students like they are still in high school. Condescending and uncaring. She honestly works overtime to undo everything your TA does to better help you understand the material.

5/5 stars for my TAs Yifan and Archi (use your TAs!) No rubric for the postlabs, and you only see the grading criteria on AFTER your postlab is graded. Sometimes TAs miss things, so fight for every single point you can get. Lab final was hard - you basically have to memorize every single detail for each experiment, but the curve was lenient.

I mean this is supposedly to be a lab and lady has got me contemplating whether or not i wanna go to USC anymore, and honestly yall should just fire her cus shes dooming everyone.

I think she thinks the only class we take is chem lab. Easily 7 hours of work for pre and post lab each week.

The science lab is supposed to be a cushion for your class grade, but I actually think it brought my grade down. The key is not to interact with Dr. Skibo all semester. She claims to normalize the lab grades but doesn't, and this really screwed me because my TA was an extremely harsh grader. Final lab exam was nigh impossible and had no curve. Studying almost doesn't help because, the average was a D. Do well in lecture, lab will probably drag you down.

Torture. Skibo's pre-lab and post-lab assignments are tedious and unnecessarily complicated. Her assignments take away from the actual chemistry lecture course. This lab scarred me. No, not mentally. PHYSICALLY. I literally have a permanent chemical burn from this lab. Completely mismanaged. USC probably keeps her on to weed out premeds, but ignores that she actively creates hazardous environments for students, is never monitoring the lab (I saw her maybe twice), and does not respond to requests for help.

The reason Hilarious is checked above is because that is what I thought of this lab. A prelab and postlab which each take about 2 hours with labs that take the full 3 hours, there wasn't a time I sat down to do work that I wasn't doing something for this class. It was laughable how many times I wondered why she makes this class so much work.

Just pray you get a good TA. You'll become religious because of the amount of praying you'll do trying to manifest a decent grade. This lab will become your life every week. Post Labs are 3-6 hours long, pre labs are 1-2 hours, and the lab protocols don't make sense half the time. Get ready for some 1245% errors.

RMP needs to add a rating of ZERO just for Skibo. It speaks great measures for 200+ people rating you so poorly. She'll yell at you with no hesitation if you're just passing through SGM (not even attending a lab) and you don't have proper PPE. Her emails are insanely passive, and the orientation and lab is a complete joke compared to actual labs.

Whoever hired her needs to be fired along with her. I barely started the semester and she's already so aggressive with her emails, even though I was just asking her to clarify. She's one of those sad old ladies who have no life or husband and is unhappy with her life. Save yourself and don't take this "professor".

genuinely one of the most confusing classes ever. she makes you purchase a lab manual for 20 dollars that has no clear criteria for the post and pre labs, WHICH BY THE WAY TAKE AT LEAST 3 HOURS EACH. the labs are so disorganized, everyone is scrambling to get it done in the 3 hour time slot. the TA's are very confused as well. FIRE HER USC!!!!!!!!!

Genuinely don't understand how or why she still is a faculty member at USC. Postlabs are especially unclear and it feels like a scavenger hunt trying to figure out what to do and how to do it. She makes this lab tedious and nothing but busy work just for the sake of difficulty. The busy work adds absolutely no value to the class or our learning.

DON'T TAKE THIS LAB UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO! It makes you work unecessarily hard, concepts are never explained and you are left on your own to figure everything out. You will have to rewrite the entire lab manual as a part of your pre lab assignments which doesn't make any sense and you will be expected to already know everything.

i don't even know why she insists on a "final lab quiz" on top of everything else that students have to deal with. making the labs extremely work intensive also feels really weird. i don't like anything about this lab. if you have ANY alternative, NEVER take this lab. you will regret it.

okay so honestly i think the prelabs and postlabs are bad but they aren't TERRIBLE. in my opinion the first lab was the worst (so much busy work) it was insane. but in my opinion the worst part is the final lab exam. way way way too much work and too much to memorize. you need to know every single detail about every single lab. i don't like uuuuu!!

I absolutely hate Dr. Skibo. She treats her intro students like grad students and grades harshly on things we've never done before. First time doing titrations and she wants us to have an RSD of 0.2% or lower like that's absolutely ridiculous and too much to ask of intro students. She also doesn't give you equations for the weekly quizzes.

For all the stem majors, I send my condolences to you since you are forced to take gen chem with her. She gives way too much work and half of it doesn't even relate to the topics learned in class. Her lab exams are just laughable too. Why does she expect us to memorize a color wheel. I swear if i hear her say "arbitrary" bro she gotta go. good luck

Do not take this class(or any Skibo class) at USC if you can. There's so much unnecessary work and there's a lab final at the end of the year even though you have to already take pre-lab quizzes and write postlabs. And everything is way more complicated than it needs to be. Also, the first lab is a lot harder than most of the rest.

Lets just say if you were to filter out Dr.Skib, that's a lot of precipitate.

There are pre-lab quizzes so take notes on the background in your pre-labs so you can do well on them(be so specific).She said to study just the experiments for the exam, and then she asked questions that were in the safety manual(which we were not supposed to study).

You do not actually interact with Skibo. Its all based on who you get as your TA. one prelab, lab, and postlab every week. prelab (3 hours), lab period (3.5 hours - sometimes you get out early if you hustle), postlab (ungodly amount of time). follow the lab manual and go to office hours. if you dont like your TA, find another TA.

Yikes. That's really all I can say to describe this lab. The pre-lab quizzes sometimes asked you for a random insert on page x of the experiment that wasn't even part of the pre-lab assignment, and on top of that the instructions are confusing. Can't really avoid this class, but use this rating as an expectation of what's to come :/

Lab itself really isn't bad if you have good TA's. She writes her own manual, assigns over 6 hours of work a week, and her lab exam is nearly impossible. Never had the pleasure of speaking to her but heard it's rough.

Skibo definitely makes chemistry a nightmare. Between several day pre and post labs, rushed unclear experiments, and the dreaded $20 lab manual, she really takes the crown as the worst professor at USC. Worst of all is needing help from her (because of her cheap, cashgrab manual), as she is ready to slap a "pay more attention" bandaid. Fire Skibo!!

Skibo is obviously a weed out prof, but you never actually see/interact with her. Teacher aides do everything, but she assigns the work. Her lab manual she makes you buy (from her) is poorly written with errors, and there is less teaching and more figuring things out yourself. Everything is more complicated than it should be.

made my life miserable, ruined my semester, destroyed my love for chemistry. The chem lab final was really easy though (compared to IB chem mcqs), as long as you read the lab manual carefully you're bound to get over 90%.

Like the chem classes here so poorly structured. The lab portion is more heavily weighted in comparison to everything else. Skibo basically controls ur grade for the lab section bc ur bound to fail the lab final and minute points are deducted from pre and postlabs and the lab quizzes making it hard for u from getting an A since u need a 93%.

Almost everybody fails the lab final and most people get around a 50% on it so it is an automatic loss of 20 or so points making it hard to get a good grade in the class. Not only that, if you have Broyer ur also screwed bc her tests are extremely hard to get good grades on and Skibo on top of that just makes it really hard to do well in the class.

She is the reason that the chemistry department gets a bad reputation. The postlabs take hours of work for no reason at all. You put in more time on the postlabs than studying for the lecture. S She walks around labs, and everyone is scared of her. Then, the final lab quiz is the hardest test I've ever taken. Took my grade from a high A- to a B+

INSANE. I can't, not just skibo, everyone, EVERYONE including the TAs are insufferable. Its like they have to adpot a certain mindset before working in the Chem department.

i had a party when i knew i never had to take her again. chem 105b just took chem105a and made it 3x worse, but I had great TAs that made it worth it. i dont even have words but good luck. lab exam sucks, postlabs are confusing and will take you hours to decode, labs are a 3 person mess. but life goes on & good luck

CHEM 105A and 105B labs had a lot of pointless assignments that felt like busy work. Not only were we forced to purchase a lab manual, but there is so many components to lab. You have to finish the pre-lab assignment, carry out a pre-lab quiz, conduct the lab with detailed notes, finish the post-lab assignment and repeat. Lab finals were difficult.

Skibo has to be one of the worst thing ever to happen to a pre med student. She doesn't take into account that you have other classes, and will expect you to know stuff that you haven't learned and quiz you on it. So disorganized, emails 11 pm at night what we have to do in lab the next morning. Do not attend if you want to protect ur mental health

Post-labs are meaningless busy work, for some reason nearly all the TAs became harsh graders this semester.

This class made me break up

I would bet money if a study were done to compare the rates of depression before and during taking her big chungus class, the rates during her class would be exponentially higher than the ones before. She gets a one star not because she deserves it but because I have to give at least one. If it were up to me, I would give her negative stars.

This professor questioned my will to live every time I opened up any assignment she gave or the grading rubric that was so poorly stuck to. I had to appeal multiple times for missed points because she was too lazy to do any of the grading herself. This was by far the worst experience I have ever had in a course I've taken and DO NOT RECOMMEND.

I would consider myself to be a calm and respectful person. Unfortunately, she lacks any sort of moral compass and shows little care for her students and so my proper judgment is out the window. The workload and difficulty quite literally has sent people I know to receive mental health care. Thats all you need to know about this course and her.

She has a bunch of trivial rules and once you break them once you get points deducted from homework. Also, too much expectations within a general introduction course. Both her and some TAs give an attitude of "everything is your fault".

Extremely horrible. I wouldn't recommend this class to my worst enemy. She has a very specific and will take away points for any little mistake you make. And the final... whew, class averages are like 40-50%. If you can, avoid taking chemistry so you can avoid Skibo. RUN RUN RUN.

Taking this class was a truly unforgettable experience, mostly because I am still trying to forget it. The labs felt like Skibo handing out pieces of a puzzle she never bothered to finish. Nothing made sense, and the confusion was the only thing that showed up every week. At this point I can only assume her employment is part of another experiment.

For the final exam she sent out the review guide three hours before we had to go in for the exam, then told us on the review guide we wouldn't need to memorize big formulas as they would be provided, and then didn't provide the formulas we needed and gave us formulas for questions that weren't asked. She also grades super strict. No me gusta.

Pre-lab quiz in lab before every lab, read manual and memorize specifics for them Postlabs are long and useless prelabs are annoying She only grades hard for quiz, labs not much sometimes marks down for dumb things. Chem lab final is bad only hope is to memorize each lab and understand the calculations of them. Lab dependent on TA shes never there

Your assignments do not teach chemistry and are just designed to make students suffer and waste time. You are the worst professor I have ever had.

You don't interact with her much, if at all, but her lab manual and grading is the worst. All of the TA's clearly don't like her. If you get a good TA, you'll be fine, but watch out for the pre/postlabs, because they are seriously impossible and take forever.

Chem is difficult but manageable on its own. Skibo makes it unbearable. The labs are just your typical chem labs, except for some reason, she makes everything way more complicated and confusing than it has to be. Lab manual has to be copied by hand for each experiment, has typos and confusing ahh sentences, and just makes normal labs confusing.

Ms. (refuse to believe she is smart enough/deserving enough to be called Dr.) is a pathetic human and educator. She does not teach and instead has a quota each semester of students that need to fail out/drop the class. She will grade harsher and harsher till this quota is met. Truly an awful and ugly person. Skibo embodies 6 of the 7 deadly sins: pride (she's passive aggressive and arrogant), greed ($20 lab manual, which you can't bring to class and must copy by hand), envy (of other people's happy lives), gluttony (...), WRATH (evident by how she phrases quiz/exam questions), and sloth (unwillingness to fix errors in her lab manual). Fire her please.

Prelab and postlab assignments are ridiculously time-consuming and pointless, with insane calculations that you have to type out. Skibo never shows her face in labs, and the TAs are just as, if not more, confused than the students. Everyone fails prelab quizzes and the final because you don't know what to study and she doesn't give any equations.

You don't know her next moves (which is stupid in the first place) I will say you don't really interact with the devil herself but you just need to bank on a good TA Lowkey better than expected and being real it isn't as hard as people make it sound, just pray you don't see the fat ball roll in...

Positive reviews here are most definitely her, only because there is now way someone can rate her higher than a 1. If you wear a seat belt to school, don't wear one. If you're not religious, find one before attending. If you want to ruin your life for a few months, take her and it'll be effortless to become depressed. If you still ignore, GL!

No TA likes her. No student likes her. I get we have to deal with her for Gen Chem as she is the lab instructor, but forget about interacting with her. She takes so long to reply to emails, and when she does they are often rude. I hope and pray you can get through gen chem without having to interact with this woman.
