Very clear. Easy class. She is very helpful too. I recommend this class.

A very boring and unrespectful teacher whose class is boring
Class is easy if you actually go and pay attention.
Very Helpful! wonderful lady! Would take her classes again.
This is the best teacher i ever had. She is easy going and helpful.
hard tests and a long paper. really funny laugh
No Comments
easy to follow lectures, gives the test questions to you for practice
I would recomend her. She is a great teacher and very nice and helpful!
She's very helpful.
very cool and easy tests this is any easy A for anyone with a brain
Really nice lady. Has a funny laugh. Interesting class. The 2 book reviews kinda suck but she grades pretty fair on them; I got a B+ and an A on them.

Excellent teacher.
Tobin is the nicest professor i have had at CMU. She is right from Ireland, so her accent is funny and makes class fun to go to. The 6 page paper kinda sucks but she grades really easy and will help you. I would take her again.
Shes a great teacher. its really hard to fail her class. I didnt do a research paper and did bad on the tests and still passed. I would recommend her.
fun interesting class, great professor. shes very helpful and clear and easy to follow.
Wonderful teacher, interesting, energetic, good grader - listens and lets class talk too.
She's a pretty good teacher who enjoys a good laugh as much as the next person.
Good teacher. Tests are some essay, but she gives the questions before the test. No real need to go to class, just fill out the study guide, it's word for word the test you'll take. She's funny though, and helps to pass the time.
Tobin is clear, concise, and super-easy. And it's not just that she gives the exam questions in advance, but her lectures are very concise and well-organized. You don't feel buried in minutiae, but instead get the most important points.
Very easy teacher. The study guides are the tests. You should get no lower than a B in her class. Easy Grader. Take her.
She's funny. You'll LOVE her laugh!
I really enjoyed her class. She's really nice, and teaches the most important points. I love her accent! I learned alot and would definatly take her again.
She is a good prof. Her lectures are to the point and she gives you the test questions ahead of time so that you can be prepared. Great class: I learned a lot.
Wonderful person, skilled teacher, she cares about what she is teaching and in doing so she has great appeal. If you take any class this year, take hers. No one else thinks she’s even a little hot?
She's got a great Irish accent and her sense of humor really lightens the boring topics of the class. She gives you the basic ideas of what will be the questions for the tests. She gives you a couple questions and you pick two and write essays on them.
I'm going against all these other ratings. The women drove me nuts. She'd go off on something TOTALLY different, and her accent was annoying. She's pretty friendly- but honestly...who cares.
The best History teacher I have had at CMU. She will go out of her way to help you get an A in the class. Very clear and she laughs at everything. I hope I will have her again for another History class.
An awesome history teacher. Her classes are relatively easy, and she will go out of her way to help you out. She's very easy going with a great sense of humor.
Her classes are all right. She tries to make history as interesting as it can possibly be. Her tests are all right, she's got study guides of the exact questions. Definitely attend study sessions to discuss the essays, though!!
Very funny and cute, very informative and helpful. Gives good feedback and suggestions for research.
great and a looker
She's such a cute person. She is always willing to help and answer questions. The class was fun and she has a good sense of humor, I would recommend her or take her again if I had the chance. Class wasn't too hard for being a 300 level.
What can I say? I am a repeat customer. I never skip her class, even though it is my ONLY MWF class. I just enjoy her, and she's awfully nice.
She is probably the best history teacher I have taken at CMU. She talks alot but she is very funny. If you don't believe me, just wait for her laugh
She was great. really helful and funny. CMU definately needs more profs like her. take her if you can, she's cool.
Decent class, but she has worse voice/accent. Sounds like Donald Duck on speed.
Good Prof. knows what she is talking about and will help you out if you need it. tests are a little difficult, but make you think.
She is amazing. She is very engaging and hysterically funny. A really great informative teacher. A history experience at CMU would not be the same with out her. She's sensational!
I think she is absolutely adorable! Makes history fun and has the best accent! If you have a hard time undertstanding history, take her - she'll help you to love it! Tests are all right, as long as you study the study guide she gives you, you'll get an A!
Very knowledgeable about the subject, very nice teacher, but you have 3 tests and a paper, and wa-la thats what you get graded on. Go to class, b/c she lectures everyday and the notes are important...
Her accent is what makes the class so exciting, she makes the class bearable and interesting. Yes, go to class b/c the notes you take will be our saving grace. The two or three assignments or tests that will b graded in that class will make up your final grade. That's the tough part!
Fabulous professor. Knows what she's talking about. Lots of notes. Exams are all essays, so very difficult. But she will actually help you! Very interesting. Great Irish accent. Fun in class, allows class discussion and has a sense of humor.
Great accent, nice and friendly, hillarious laugh! AMAZING blue eyes. Extremely knowledgable about the subject and excited about it too. Fun teacher. Notes were better to just listen to, wasted paper in my opinion. Work HARD on assignments cuz you don't get many chances..and comment a few times!
You can tell she loves teaching. Her tests are all essay, but if you know your stuff, you'll decently. Willing to help you if you ask!
Dr. Tobin is the best professor here at Central. She always makes class fun and interesting. This class was very interesting and she is very passionate about it. All exams are essay and you have one paper to write.
Dr. Tobin is an amazing professor. She gives out a study guide before each exam that is exactly the exam. Dont let this trick you, the exams are extremly hard and I have never heard of anyone getting higher then a B+. I would very much advise taking her, and will myself look again to take her class.
EASY... no attendence, easy tests, reading helps but if you konw your history at all it is not nessicary.... take her, her classes are always easy A's or B's
No attendance, which is great! She is an easy prof but I think she is SOOOOOOOOO Boring! I either fall asleep everyday (along with others) or leave early (along with others). I would take her if it was a 50 minute class, anything longer is certain death. If you need to bring your gpa or want an easy class, take her
took the class for my required history, and I ended up loving it because of her. no attendance, so you don't have to go, but if you do, she's alright to listen to. The notes can be boring, but I think she makes them bearable. I went to her office once for help on a paper, and she's really helpful.
OK prof...laughs way too much at stuff that isn't funny...while it is hard to stay awake, going to every class isn't nessicary. As long as you get the study guide before each test, you'll be ok. I've had better and had worse...oh, and i don't know how she got a hotness rating...not hot by any means...
She's a real nice lady. Laughs at things that aren't funny. Class is real easy and a little boring.
exelent teacher
She is a great lady and is hilarious as well.
Had to write a large paper for the class, and was very helpful every step of the way.
She is hilarious and presents material with excellent clarity.
Please take one of her classes. Professor Tobin is a great teacher. She has an awesome accent and knows what she is talking about. A variety of example forms are used to keep you interested, she makes the class fun. She also grades well.
great lady...easy class. But you get enough out of the class where you do not feel cheated
Makes history****alive
Life experience was limited. I didn't like her lectures. I know she's a prof, but I think she needs to let her living catch up with her reading. I didn't like her snideness teaching U.S. history especially when talking about the 1960's era. I'm not a fan, but I did learn a lot.
GO TO CLASS AND TEST IS EASY, YOU HAVE NOT BUSY WORK, ONE OUT OF CLASS ASSIGNMENT AND THREE TESTS AND SOME IN CLASS POINTS THAT IS ABOUT IT. GIVES GOOD STUDY GUIDES. IF YOU WANT A GOOD GRADE TAKE DR. TOBIN
one of my all time fav prof's!! she is super funny and make a sometimes boring subject interesting. i wish she could teach every history class here.
I loved her class, if i need any more history classes i will try an take them with her for sure !!!
Tobin is a great teacher. She tells you what you need to know for the exams and explains everything. She knows what she is talking about and makes it interesting. Take her, I will take her for any history class again.
Dr. Tobin is a very smart woman who really knows her stuff! She has a really awesome accent and cracks a lot of jokes that she always laughs at. She covers the material thouroughly, and answer any questions you may have!
This class is a drag. But Dr. Tobin is a good professor. She gets into the material and makes it somewhat interesting. Go to class, listen and take good notes and you will be solid.
She's a lovely lass from Ireland, but! it's extremely hard to stay awake, so either drink your MT.Dew in class, or prepare yourself for a good nap. She has a wonderful motherly voice, and it puts ya right to sleep, regardless of how interesting the day's subject is. All-in-all Good Prof. Take her, she's smart!
Great teacher! Second time I have taken her and I would still take her again. She gives good notes and you only need those to do well on the exams. I really thought the class was interesting and she has a neat accent.
She is just such a cute teacher, her laugh will make you crack up for days. Women in History is a wonderful subject to learn about and she knows SO much about it. Her test are easy, her class is a friendly enviroment, and you can tell she loves to teach this subject. Id take it again if I could.
Nice lady, cute...Not a good prof. Her exams have nothing to do with her lectures and usually consisted of one question, it was do or die.
Ok class. Although she doesn't keep track of attendance, the only way to get notes that are needed for exams are to show up or have a friend in the class. 3 exams, 60% of your grade: and they only consist of one essay. She gives you the possible essays ahead of time, so with a touch of studying, you should have no problem getting a "B". Also e
She's a really nice lady, can be funny-only if you can stay awake during class. There are 3 exams, one essay on each. She's a tough grader. You don't know what she's looking for in your work until after the fact. There are 3 book reports and then a big project, make it really "pretty & scrapbooky" if you want an A.If youre taking to fill the UP Req DONT!
if you're taking this class as a UP requirement, don't do it! it will bring your GPA down and its a****load of reading. She is a tough grader and she expects you to include so much in the papers and essay tests. she doesn't use blackboard and she gaves multiple grades. i got b/B+ on everything. it makes no sense, and neither does she! dont take it
While the subject matter can be interesting, I felt that I was doing busy work. If I can't write a peper by the Master's level, then I shouldn't be there. Rather than focusing on writing my large paper due at the end of the semester, I was struggling to meet the intermediary assignments that did not have any affect on the final paper at all.
She is a tough grader, but if you go to class you should be fine. She gives study guides beforehand and goes over them in class. There is a lot of reading but its not hard. Her lectures are very helpful and she does her best to make it interesting.
She is a tough grader. In-class readings you dont really have to do, just have the book and answer a question out of it for participation points.
Gives you notes on everything you need for the exam. Only 3 exams, but she grades them tough. There's a scrapbook assn that requires some time but otherwise just grab the notes and you should be fine. One problem I had was she didnot access blackboard & that made out of class communication difficult. Very nice lady otherwise, cracked jokes often.
Very nice teacher, good at explaining material. What she lectures on is exactly what's on the exams so you don't have to read the textbook. But to get participation points you have to read the other books and talk about it in class, its not too bad though.
Professor Tobin is quite funny, and very nice. She is helpful and gives good advice on the 496 paper.
Amazing teacher really easy class cant emphasize that enough!! Never opened any of the books. Just show up for class, be involved in group discussion you will get points that can help at the end, and take notes everything is on the overhead.
She is a good teacher but goes WAY too fast on lecture. Can not write fast enough.
If you attend class and take notes you will do pretty well in class. She tells you at the beginning of the semester when the "quizzes" are, and they are based off of the lecture and textbook material. The two exams are essay based.
The class was pretty easy, but very dull. She also assigns this History scrapbook that is a total pain. All of the tests are just essay based and she gives you the questions prior to the exam.
I loved Professor Tobin! She has an irish accent, but she is easy to understand in my opinion. The material can be pretty dry if you're not into US history, but I liked it. Plus, it's a large class so as long as you can get the notes from someone else, attendance is not mandatory. I never used the book, but she does reference it often.
Don't let Prof Tobins ratings fool U. They R very dated. She is a nice lady & will do whatever it takes to help U if U ask her a ?, but if U aren't a history buff then I wouldn't recommend this course. I took this course as an elective, am an A/B student, went to class, but did not receive a good grade. Gives exams beforehand but is a TOUGH GRADER!
This class was pretty straight forward. There is 3 exams, which she gives study guides for, a scrapbook that is kind of obnoxious, and a book review. She is a really nice lady when you talk to her in person and has an Irish accent that was distracting at first. She's about par for the course with the history department.
Definitely one of the best teachers I have ever had, and she really seems to care about the class. Sometimes her study guides could be confusing, but overall a very easy A. I would recommend buying all the textbooks for the class because you end up doing short discussions about the readings, and then get points if you participate. Great teacher!
This is a writing intensive class, so her exams are essays. She is a tough grader, so watch your grammer. There is also a discussion class with the lecture. Everything you do in this class is writing. Response Papers, one Research project, and exams. That's it. Her lectures are lively, clear, and a lot of information. She laughs a lot.
Long lectures are a daily routine this class. She explains every piece of her lecture in a fashion that makes it understandable. The papers in the class, though they may be alot are not tht bad as long as you go to class.
Catherine is a great professor, could listen to her lectures all day. Writing intensive class. 1-2 page papers due about every other week, 1 eight page research paper due at end of year, and all exams were essays. Gives an exam review sheet though, which is very helpful.
She is a wonderful person, but an awful teacher. She was not specific about what she wanted from the class. You do a 10 page research paper worth 25% of grade, which isn't bad (I mean come one it's college), but she did not clarify what she wanted from it and a majority of my class did very poorly because of it. ALWAYS read and go to office hours!!
She is willing to help if you ask, also very nice. She is a tough grader and does not use rubrics. She doesn't use a point system so you never know you're grade in the class & she doesn't use blackboard. The exams are based on the readings, but even if you do read you still don't do that well because she's so picky. TAKE THIS CLASS CREDIT NO CREDIT
Very unclear on explanations for papers. If you do not have the same opinion as her you will get marked down a lot. Two page papers with citation is only worth 2 points. Do not take her
Doesn't use very good notes for the class, usually hand written and barely legible. Her accent is thicker, and with the mic she uses unless you sit towards the front of class you cannot truly understand. You NEED to read your books to understand what she is trying to say.
She does not use blackboard at all. Grading is very subjective to how she is feeling. Rarely gives out a good grade unless you write her exact opinion on essay exams. Essay exams are 75% of grade, research paper 20%, 5 other essays 5% of grade. Exam questions are vague and then she takes off points for not including specifics. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Very knowledge and passionate about what she teaches. Willing to meet with me outside of her office hours. Offers extra credit, and gives study guides for tests. Test questions can be vague, and she can be a tough grader on essay questions and papers. Doesn't use Blackboard. I enjoyed Tobin and this class, but I definitely had to work for an A.
Tobin seems very passionate about the subject and exemplifies that during lecture. The GAs that graded the papers were very critical and gave very little helpful advice. My papers had few comments/suggestions and yet I would still be graded poorly... It may be that I am more of the math type, but this class was a struggle and I would not recommend.
Mrs. Tobin is accessible outside of class, will give extra credit, and work with you on timelines and material. However, her lectures are lackluster. In HST321 it seemed like a 100 lvl course watered down. Her tests consist of 10 questions of trivia not formally covered in class. Presentations consist of a projector & printed pages from wikipedia.
Unrealistic grader. The class is out of 100 points and you probably won't get 100% on anything. I would recommend avoiding this prof at all costs. Lots of work and reading. Lectures are hard to understand/ hear.
Coming into the class I was afraid because she seemed very strict. However, she is more than willing to meet outside of class and answer questions. There are a couple papers, but as long as you meet with her and have her review your paper, you'll do fine. She cares about you passing.
Doesnt speak very loud so I recommend sitting towards the front. Class is only out of 100 points. Really hard grader on papers and essay tests so youll have to write a lot to get all the points. She does give the questions before the test which is nice. Answers emails in a timely matter.
Can be a little mean at times. Sometimes will not assist students. Class can feel scripted at times. Also is very bland and seems uninterested.
Tobin is a difficult grader who is not clear on anything she wants. I had to email her multiple times throughout the semester to understand what she wanted and even then she was still very vague. The class itself was boring and not set up well at all leaving me to get nothing out of the class. I would not take this course or Tobin ever again.
I am a very motivated student, and I am usually not one to complain about a professor. However, Catherine Tobin was the worst professor I've had at CMU. Because of her tough grading, I was always asking her questions. She was very short and rude when responding to me. I would never take a class instructed by her again.
Essay exams and one 10-page paper due at end of class. Only 100 points total and a 96 to get an A. A few extra credit opportunities, TAKE THESE. For exams, give background of the topic AND what was talked about in class to get an A. Pretty much just pray that she picks the prompt you prepared best for. This was my most difficult A yet so beware.
Tobin is honestly horrible. Her teaching style is just reading off bulletin points for 50 mins and having you do discussion boards every week. Really tough grader, essay exams and quizes throughout. Wouldn't recommend didn't learn anything and felt like I wasted my money/
She's alright. More writing than your typical WI class. Things aren't worth much points so it's easy to screw up past the point of no return. Not very helpful when emailing her.
Professor Tobin's class and expectation's were clear from the beginning. She gives you a heads up before longer writing assignments are due, and each week there is typically a discussion board. Use the textbook as a reference for discussion posts and writing assignments and you'll do just fine. Professor also answers emails quite quickly.
She seems nice, but her instructions are pretty vague so I had 2 email her a couple times w/questions. The pacing of the class was also not great. 1 day we had 3 assignments due. For DB's, just take notes and regurgitate what u read. Have 2 read the books so u can write reports on them. Research project is awful but not the worst. Class is 100pts
My class was a WI. I really liked Tobin, she is very nice. She struggles with technology, emails can be unclear, but overall fairly easy grader. Just keep up with the class work and you will be fine. She is willing to work with you to make sure you pass. Just email her about submitting something late and you should be good.
The class is rather straightforward besides the discussion boards. She says the minimum is 300 words but you'll often write at 1000 words to accurately answer her long and tedious questions. There is also a long book report toward the beginning of the semester but she extended the deadline and provided a lot of details for how she wants it done.
Great teacher. Fair grading, and reasonable expectations. Would take another class from professor Tobin.
I had this for online class and she was awful. She is very vague on her instructions and does not provide examples any examples. The WI project was not that bad, but she did not communicate it well, along with the two book reviews. I feel like she could communicate everything better. I would not recommend her for an online class at least.
She is horrible at communicating, which is not ideal for an online class. She did not provide a single example throughout the class of what she wanted papers to look like. She has very little in the grade book and you will not know what your grade will until the very end. I do not recommend this professor to anyone.
Very long and hard to follow lectures, sometimes they have nothing to do with assignments but the assignments aren't very hard. Projects and papers are difficult because there isn't much direction or instruction provided. Not the harshest grader but it's kind of always a shot in the dark because there is never a rubric or guide. I don't recommend.
Tobin can be hit-or-miss. Emails can be unclear, but she's a fairly easy grader. Use unstuck ai and stay on top of coursework - you'll likely do well. She's willing to work with students, so reach out if you need help.
the class wasn't hard she grades pretty easily and there wasn't much homework besides the discussions. She lectures for most of the class time though and that can sometimes be boring.
I took the writing intensive class online and even though the material and the content of the class was enjoyable, her feedback on anything graded is practically non-existent, her rubrics and instructions are vague and even conflict with submission outlines, and the class lacks instruction. Her tech skills are inadequate, maybe try an offline class
I would not recommend taking Tobin for an online class. The prompts for assignments are vague and confusing. Reaching out for clarification results in her regurgitating the prompt back at you. She provides little to no feedback, is awful at communication, and doesn't know how to use technology. Not the worst class I've taken, but not the best.
