Makes lots mistakes, but a pretty good professor. Office hours are very helpful.
Overall, I did not enjoy her teaching. She basically just writes things down and doesn't explain them. When she does try to explain concepts it is difficult to follow. She gets flustered easily. I basically had to read the textbook and teach myself, but I did have a good TA who was much better at teaching than the professor was. Do not recommend.
Really bad teacher that explains nothing and gives the wrong answers. She makes a bunch of mistakes and always has to correct herself.
Uvarov is new from what I know. And this shows in her lecture. She often makes errors and has to backtrack to correct them. She didn't really help teach the content and left much of the class confused. If you have her then you will do a lot of studying on your own.
She writes things down and never really explains things. She makes a lot of mistakes during her lectures and never seem to fully correct them and re-explain them. The curves on her exams are pretty good. A 45% on the first exam was the average so I ended up getting a B with a 65%. Be prepared to self-teach.
She is approachable and helps you with homework questions from the book during office hours. However, she does make a lot of mistakes during her lectures and has to correct herself. Average professor.
Lectures suck. The only time I learned was reading the book or discussions w/ the TA. AWESOME curve! The first midterm had an average of a 47%, meaning everyone who got that score got a C. Here's the catch; it is very hard to get an A because she grades on a bell curve, meaning if you want an A you need to be one of the top students in the class.
Uvarov is a new teacher, she knows the material well but has a difficulty explaining it to the students. Study the textbook and practice using chapter review questions. The class has a great curve, make sure to take advantage the first midterm!
Be prepare to drag the textbook along with you and study from it whenever your free time allows because she does not really explain anything. Going to the workshops and TA office hours are also helpful. Make sure to do the optional homework problems and practice exams; they are very helpful. Overall, her teaching style is confusing.
Although Prof. Uvarov's does occasionally make mistakes during lecture, she doesn't hesitate to correct them. Her tests are compatible with the course material, but does require you to know the subject adequately, thus outside studying. This year is her first year, so I understand her performance. But she does makes up for if during office hours.
I am so glad I took AP Chem. She's a new teacher and it shows. Makes so many mistakes in class, even when she prepares the notes beforehand I find it easier to just read the book. I haven't been to office hours, but the "help" offered in Mastering Chemistry and Practice Problems in the book isn't helpful. Take her Practice Exams for help.
If you didn't take AP Chem in high school, you're going to have a stressful quarter. New professor and it clearly shows in lecture. Doesn't really clarify anything and makes things more confusing than they are (chem is confusing enough!) Models her class like Enderle's, so just go to his lectures instead. Would not recommend.
Dr. Uvarov is new-yet did a great job at teaching Chem 2A. Failed my final-MY FAULT NOT HERS-got a B. Went to her when my lab grade was entered wrong-MORE THAN WILLING TO MAKE THE APPROPRIATE CORRECTION WHEN PROOF WAS PRESENTED. Some call her passive aggressive; I think she’s approachable-you just have to be RESPECTFUL. And yes-I’D TAKE HER AGAIN.
If you're bad at chemistry or even average, DO NOT take Uvarov. She may know what she's talking about, but relaying that to her students is near impossible. I only survived by watching Enderle's videos, which was like a whole new world of chemistry. She is passive-aggressive and defensive. Avoid if possible, otherwise be ready to self-teach.
She's really nice and if you're confused will try her best to explain it to you. What else can you really ask for? Don't let low ratings scare you away from Dr. Uvarov, she's very helpful 1-on-1 and pretty good at lectures. Plus, she's new and will get better with time. Besides, the teacher won't affect your grade because it's graded on a curve.
Dr. Uvarov was actually a pretty decent professor. It was her first time, so mistakes were inevitable. Overall, she pinpoints the main ideas of each chapter nicely so that it's easier to study. No mandatory homework, so you don't have to get the book. Go to lectures, do the practice exams and you'll be fine. :)
She's a new professor, and it shows. Makes lots of mistakes during lecture, and isn't always clear in her explanations. I basically learned everything this quarter from reading the textbook, going to lecture didn't help.
I had to teach myself. I was very confused during lectures. Do the homework problems, go to workshops, and get tutoring if you are struggling. The practice exams are useful.
Dr. Uvarov is an awful professor. She clearly cares only about her research, which really shows in her unorganized and error-ridden lectures. I learned the material partly from the book and partly through Dr. Enderley. Her lectures seemed to confuse people more then educate them. Avoid Uvarov !
Not a bad professor & a good grade is attainable! Read the textbook well because lectures are cursory. Tests are straightforward, based on topics covered in class, although you're usually pressed for time. Do lots of practice problems, exams & go to office hours. She's approachable & works hard to answer everyone's questions! Also, fantastic curve.
Honestly, I learned everything from the book but I benefited from the awesome curve and her midterms were actually easy!
did not explain things clearly. always made mistakes but would make excuses. overall, not a good professor.
Walked into chemistry with close to zero knowledge of it at all. Lectures do help, because they help you keep a pace of work and they summarize the material. Not the best lecturer. Do every single practice test that she gives you, they are really good. Watch Dr. Enderle's videos on youtube as alternatives to her lectures. Decent curves.
Her lectures are based off her notes, unfortunately her notes are riddled with typos and often wrong. Tests were hard, but the curve is decent! She has a great understanding of chemistry, however, she has not yet mastered how to teach it. No mandatory homework, just 2 midterms, and the final. Go to Enderle's lectures that really helped me!
Although she's new, no excuse for her poor teaching skills. Less and less people show up to lectures. Gets defensive/confrontational about questions. Avoids answering questions. I could take better notes, hers are awful, filled with mistakes. You then have to pick up from where she left off-even if she didn't go over it, you're responsible for it.
Average was 43 for the first midterm, and in her email announcing that she basically said that because the first midterm is high school chemistry we should have done better. Sorry, but if it's so easy then that says something about your tests and teaching if the average is that low. Notes are riddled with errors and she's not helpful at all. Avoid.
Absolute class where self-teaching is required! Best advice is to make sure you are well prepared for the first midterm to be at the top of the curve, once you're at the bottom it's hard to get back up
Make sure you read the textbook before class because it's hard to follow along because she is not entirely clear about the concepts during lecture. However, she teaches the best during office hours because she actually sits down and works with you, so I would advise that. Overall, she is an okay professor, you just have to do more on your own.
Horrible teacher, bad examples, didn't even do review sessions and wasn't very interested in the students it seemed like.
Messing up, jumping around the lesson, uncoordinated, taking scantrons away to work on the second half of the final exam when there's clearly NO REASON for that. After a while, going to her lectures didn't seem worth it.
Her notes given during lecture were subpar. Advice: beat the curve on the first midterm, go to t.a. office hours, and do well on the labs. Very unclear, makes mistakes, and then gives stuff that we never went over on finals. Long awkward pauses in lecture. Lacks confidence, makes chemistry less enjoyable. Defensive with questions.
Look so she is kinda scattered during lecture which is understanble. everyone makes mistakes. however if you went to OH she would sit down with you and really help you understand. If you work hard, you will do fine in the class. She is really nice, and really helpful in OH.
Lectures were pointless. Never explained her examples. For me, chemistry was a class I had to teach myself everything for even the basic and easy concepts. Only good thing was the curve.
Honestly, she is a nice person but that does not make her a good professor. I know that she knows the material but how does that help me if she can't explain it to me or the rest of the class. Her exams are ridiculous and everyone walks out of their feeling like "What is life" and "Why am I even here". Maybe after more experience she will be better
First two midterms were fairly simple. Final was harder. Some learning was needed outside of class. a few things i didn't understand in the book, i understood through her. Overall, she was good,at least for me and her curve was very generous. Wants students to participate, but they don't really seem that enthusiastic. maybe cause class was at 8 am.
A lot of people seemed to really hate her, but she's not that bad. She is a bit scattered during lecture and isn't the best prof around, but if you do the homework and put in the effort, getting a good grade is not a problem. The curve was amazing.
She was a good professor being that it was only her second quarter teaching. Overall, the class was good, very helpful in office hours, and a nice curve
Understand that to do well in Uvarov's class, you're going to need to teach yourself and seek out many outside resources. She will not be any help to you much, but her curves are pretty generous because of her weak teaching.
I thought Uvarov did a decent job instructing o-chem considering her lack of experience. Four quizzes, ten lab reports, and one final. She did lack proper explanation for most of the concepts in lecture, but makes up for it in her interactive office hours. Additionally, her lab reports were rather tough, so spend some time. Kudos to Uvarov!
Before teaching O-chem this summer Dr. Uvarov hadn't studied organic chemistry for almost 10 years (she is an inorganic chemist), having that said I think she did a decent job. She lacked adequate explanations of some topics at times and I think her teaching philosophy is good in theory but in practice I believe it could use adjustment.
She's really organized in regards to information. There's no tricks to her test bc she puts what she expects of you in her perf. expectation. Also, she makes herself available throughout the week, which was convenient. There was no curve in the class bc our avg was high which reflected her teaching method.I'd recommend her because she's really nice
This professor is the worst teacher I have ever had. When I asked her a question she looked at me with a blatant disregard stare and barely answered my question. There is not much I can do except put up with this absurd excuse for a teacher. After taking this class Chemistry is definitely my least favorite subject. The curve was amazing.
She's literally not teaching anything. Almost everything i learnt so far is from self-studying: YouTube, Chemwiki, textbook, and sapling homework. The only thing she does during the lecture is quiz us through iclicker questions which means you cannot even skip the classes to spend more time on self-studying because the Participation is graded.
No organization to lectures. Doesn't teach. Doesn't answer questions or clarify when asked. Not helpful during office hours and extremely condescending. Took AP Chem, passed with flying colors and still found this course moderately difficult. Mandatory attendance for participation points. Try switching to a different professor.
The basis of her class is suppose to be pre-lecture learning that will be clarified in lecture but that doesn't happen. Her lecture is like a pseudo-quiz show, only it's not as interesting as that sounds. To make it worse, she has lessons organized in the opposite order of other professors. That means that labs and lectures don't sync up.
avoid. assigns pre-lecture homework but doesn't really clarify how to do things during lecture, so a lot of self studying is involved.
She's probably the worst chemistry teacher you can meet in your whole miserable life. Her 'Lecture notes' basically contains about 6-10 questions and only about 5 questions would be discussed during her so-called 'Lecture'. She does not teach you concepts so you have to learn your ass off from Chemwiki and textbook with some youtube videos. GL&HF
Basically a self-taught class. I've never been to her office hours, but her lectures are practically useless yet mandatory (you can skip up to 5 times). I learned more from youtube videos (Khan Academy, Crash Course... ) and ChemWiki than from her. Avoid if possible.
Great teacher! Curves based off of the highest test scores, which usually had at least one person get 100%, so there was no curve. Very fair with regrades. Loved the class!
Learning outside of class and applying in lecture gave us a good idea of what questions would be on quizzes and tests. There is a lot of work because of the assigned hw and having to learn the material yourself, but it helps you actually learn the material. She is very enthusiastic, open to helping her students, and generous with extra credit.
Pros: -3% extra credit to overall grade - Exams are split up into 4 "quizzes" that are 10% of your grade so if you mess up on one, its not the end of the world -Exams are 75% you, 25% group quiz which is also a grade booster Cons: -No curve typically if someone in the class gets 100% -there are a lot of assignments due before every lecture
This year I guess was some sort of trial year. Online homework went over topics we've never discussed. On several occasions she would explain how to after the homework was due. Called on us by name because of the clickers. If you are not very good or need more help in chemistry I do NOT recommend her. She is helpful, but helpful doesn't resolve it.
Uvarov is pretty good; she posts skills expectations in her lesson plans and gives outside resources for studying. Practice exams are definitely useful. Lectures are 99% practice problems, which also means study before class. A lot of people complain, but she gives you everything you'd need; you just have to be a college student and do the work.
What can I say? This teacher is very unclear. She'll ask for clicker questions, and kill time by walking up and down aisles to different students asking them what they think the answer is. She kills so much time with these questions that you don't learn much each lecture. You'll have to review a lot on your own. Expect to teach yourself chemistry.
She doesn't teach ANYTHING. She is very rude to you when you ask questions during her lectures. She calls out names the entire lecture to ask q's about material you were supposed to "teach yourself" beforehand. The tests have information that she very briefly if AT ALL covered during class. Highly reccomend avoiding this professor AT ALL COSTS.
She teaches students after students have completed hw, and most of the time, asks students to explain concepts by randomly picking students to answer questions.
One of the worst teachers ever. For an introductory chemistry class for somebody who has never taken chemistry, it is your first nightmare. So rude to people who ask legitimate questions in class. Her self teaching system does not work. So you basically have to put time outside of class just to learn the material, and there is hw before every class
This is the worst class ever! If you have to choose between waiting a quarter to take chemistry or taking any class with uvarov, wait till next quarter or switch majors. She makes you teach yourself while doing the homework then goes through problems in class and doesnt explain answers. She is rude and terrible and the worst ever.
She is very rude to students who ask questions. She has people explain how to do problems in their own way going over all possible wrong answers and wrong methods before saying which one is right. Lectures she saves and puts on her page aren't legible at all. Her teaching method is telling us which youtube videos to watch on the concept.
This is the worst class I have ever taken with the worst professor I have ever had. I am a 5th year so I have been in a lot of classes and had a lot of professors and I cant think of any professor who was as terrible at fascilitating learning as Catherine Uvarov.
She is honestly the worst teacher I have ever come across. She gives homework before every lecture, and doesn't teach or give any notes on how to approach the homework, nor does she give any kind of a lesson in class. Just don't take her, you'll save your GPA and stress level.
Picks students randomly in class to explain questions, gives tough exams, no curve, assigns hw for a chapter before explaining the chapter's concepts.
Anyone who's taken her class knows her favorite phrase is "ask your neighbors". I had to work really hard for my grade and still didnt end with a good one. I literally went to Chemisty tutoring everyday and did practice all the practice exams. My TA was amazing and Youtube is literally your teacher. She's a littler clearer during office hours.
Dr. Uvarov was possibly the worst professor I've ever had. Don't get me wrong, she's a great person, but a terrible teacher and I regret ever taking her. She uses Active Learning (which means you need to know your stuff before going to class). So this is basically a self-taught class.
3% extra credit, 10% group quiz, 5% lab, 5% for showing up to class, %10 homework, 4 quizzes worth 7.5% each, 15% midterm, %25 final. Grading is very fair. If you do the study guides you will do well on tests.
Flipped class which means you teach yourself concepts which tends to get really tough during week 3. Philosophy is that "We teach ourselves how to play soccer and play guitar etc. so teach yourself chemistry." But not all of us WANT to learn chemistry.. Homework doesn't correlate with tests whatsoever. Learn to love the phrase "ask your neighbor"
You know a professor is bad when they consistently refer to themselves as Dr. and act like it in class. For future Uvarovites, brace for impact, you will be really fortunate if both you AND your GPA make it out in one piece.
This class was so hard. You were expected to read sections and understand material before lecture so that you understood the more complex problems in class. I basically taught myself. Tests were hard as well.
Just avoid at all cost. You need to do a ton of reading. Lectures are not helpful, they are a waste of time. The TAs are awesome though, they explain things better than the she does. It is possible to get a good grade if you are a genius, but seriously everything is self taught. I wish I waited another quarter instead of taking her.
I would not recommend taking her class unless you are ready to teach yourself chemistry. Most of the lecture time is used to answer multiple choice questions via clicker, which implies that you should have assimilated the material beforehand. I learned more by spending 5 minutes with a tutor than 1 hr in her lecture.
I appreciated Uvarov. The class is set up how you expected college to be; a lot of on your own studying and practicing, which is fair to expect from students. Granted, she does do research in education so the class may vary quarter to quarter to see which way students learn best. But you are given plenty of help, it may just be a rough adjustment.
I can not stress this enough, DO NOT TAKE HER. She does not teach at all and everything is self taught. This class has killed my GPA, I have been keeping up with the readings and everything, but nope it wasn't good enough. My condolences for you if you are taking her.
Contrary to most of her ratings, Uvarov is a great professor. Her lessons on smartsite are great and so are her powerpoints. Quizzes are fairly doable if you understand the material. I personally love Uvarov she is so sassy and funny. Don't regret taking her :)
Great teacher!!Love the way she teaches!! Sapling Homework (online) helps a lot for your quizzes and tests. 4 Quizzes total (Individual + Group Quiz) (not so bad). 1 Midterm and a Final. She gives extra credits that would help boost up your grade .Not a hard class if you study. :)
Clear grading criteria and lesson plans, but she's a horrible teacher. Her practice exams DO NOT correlate with the actual exams, there's an excessive amount of homework, her lectures are useless, and not to mention she is extremely RUDE!!! Seems to care more about her teaching style than the actual class. Enjoy teaching yourself chem? Take Uvarov.
Sapling homework ($30) due before each lecture, iclicker ($50) mandatory participation, and unclear lectures. The only reason why I'm doing "alright" is because the homework helps out a bunch, and my TA was the bomb. She is experimenting diff teaching methods. Why am I paying thousands of dollars to be a lab rat in a classroom? Avoid at all costs!!
Not so bad due to Sapling Learning Homework mostly teaches you all you need. Mostly self taught, lectures aren't even lectures because it's just clicker questions. A good chunk of the class grade is participationhwlab so it could be worse. Gives a lot of tests so it's easier to accidentally mess up on one test and still be ok.
To say the least, FTB. She is the worst teacher ever. SO many homework assignments and lecture is mandatory. Its a flipped class so you are supposed to know the material BEFORE class. She DOESN'T curve. She RUINED chemistry for me. Please do not take her.
WORST EVER. If you are looking for somebody who is not going teach you anything and then test you to find things that you don't know, THIS IS THE PROFESSOR FOR YOU. She will ruin your whole quarter. You cannot do anything else but her class. I wish I could rate her with negative numbers. STEP 1: AVOID AT ANY AND ALL COSTS STEP 2: SEE STEP 1
She is honestly the worst professor ever. She has you do homework before class with basic problems, and the next day in lecture she throws the most difficult complicated problems at you. She does not teach, it is all self taught. Attendance is mandatory unless you want to get points deducted. Her exams are DIFFICULT! DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
If ur in for suffering take Uvarov She is the most hindering professor u'll ever take She says shes not there to teach but rather guide but the only place she guides her students is in the wrong direction I enter lectures empty handed & leave the same shes very rude No reader her practice tests are unhelpful Would rather have a rock as a professor
She will call u by name and have them answer a question in front of four-hundred students. If you do not give the correct answer rather than continuing she tells the whole class that you don't know what you are dong and THEN moves on. Lectures are not very helpful. No curve like most chem professors, tests are harder as well. AVOID at all cost.
So this is coming from an average studentbelow average student. I'm going to give a fair review by listing pros and cons. PROS:1) 4 quizzes, 1 midterm, 1 final. With the 4 quizzes, you have a chance to boost your grade. 2) lots of ec opportunities. CONS: 1) no curve. 2) lectures are not helpful 3)you need to do the homework before going to lec
Uvarov made the class a lot harder than it needed to be. I did feel like I learned a lot BY MYSELF, with the help of Sapling Homework. Lectures are pretty much useless as she just asks you impossible questions. Tests are doable if you use the resources she gives you. She is quite rude and condescending to her students.
uvarov was the freest A i've ever had. Literally 2A was just AP Chem review, if you have taken chem before, her tests are incredibly straightforward and rely on basic algebra ( dimensional analysis). Onkly bad part is clicker questions, but just show up to class 40 mins late and get 1 question right no problem.
This class ruined my life, I had to spend so much time reading from the textbook. If you haven't taken AP Chem you will have difficulties in this class. It's not the hardest class you will most likely pass, but maybe not with the grade you wanted. I'd rather wait another quarter than take her.
Horrible. Worst class have taken at Davis, avoid at all costs. Seriously this class is 100% self-taught and is not like any of the other Chem2A classes taught on campus. No curve. Lectures are completely useless. Homework is useless. So so so so so bad. Thank goodness for my TA.
