HORRIBLE TEACHER, HORRIBLE CLASS! I had to withdraw b/c I wouldn't of passed. Grades homework SO hard, test suck, quizzes are AWFUL, do not take this class

This teacher is one of the worst professors I have ever had, She does not know how to teach and grades things like you are a senior in college as a freshman. I failed every midterm I took and I studied harder for this class than any other class.

Does not care or teach concepts well. Expects complete sentences on HW, does not practice what she preaches in class. Treats class like HS freshman. Wastes class time goes over. ALEKS is torture, and widely used in the class. It wastes a lot of time, and new concepts are poorly introduced. Failures snowball and roadblock you. HW is graded harsh.

This is the worst professor I have ever had. I would not recommend to ever take her course. She is passive aggressive and very rude to students. She is not helpful even when you go to her for help or office hours. This class is set up so it is almost impossible for students to do well even when attending office hours, tutoring sessions and reviews.

I absolutely hated this class. She is extremely passive agressive. All of the homework she assigns is graded so harshly, I dont think I got above a 70% on a single one. ALEKS is the worst! During class, she would go over new topics poorly. However, the tests are pretty easy and worth a lot so if you do your ALEKS and study guides you'll pass easily

Worst professor I've ever had at the uofa. If I could give her 0 stars I would. She is so rude and does not care about her students. The majority of my class failed. She does not teach concepts well and makes it hard for her students to understand.

I've never had a worse professor. There are assignments due that are not in the syllabus, she's very disorganized and unfriendly and her attitude does not inspire motivation to jump through her hoops. She does not explain concepts well and homework is graded obscenely tough.

She was by far the worst prof I have ever had. I worked my butt off in this class, attended office hours, bought the study book, went to think tank. You name it I did it and I still got a D. She has no compassion for any of the students and seemed like she could care less about what we did and what we struggled with. There's TONS of homework.

Unfortunately, the math dept at the Uofa is terrible and she adds the icing to the cake for worst math teachers there. Unlike my MATH 112 peers who took it w other teachers, she gives the most homework (loves word problems) and requires students to write out each step. Classwork is graded strictly and attendance is mandatory. Her voice is annoying!

Catherine Yslas is the WORST MATH TEACHER AT UOFA. She discourages students from attending ThinkTank and her homework is impossible to complete. Everything you think you know about college algebra, forget it, she teaches it in the most unconventional way. She is a harsh grader and will grade you on the smallest things. DO NOT TAKE HER!

YSLAS SUCKS! While I have an immense appreciation for math, her lectures are mandatory and are quite boring. She is very strict on how the homework should be completed and if she knows a student attends THINKTANK, she grades the homework lower. She once told me 'THINKTANK' sucks and I should only go to her TAs.

Her voice alone could bring ears to bleed; even the deaf cover their ears when she pipes up with her insane lectures and surly attitude. Without a doubt, the worst teacher I have ever had the displeasure of being under the tutelage of. I suggest the university reconsider her employment immediately.

Catherine is quite literally the worst Professor I have had. As far as her teaching goes she is mediocre but she has cut off people mid question if it doesn't feel relevant. Over-assigns homework, really reliant on tests, and feels pay to win in regards of studying. Was approved for extra time due to DRC yet was not given it. Avoid her at all costs

This was the first math class I ever had a hard time in. She is all to blame. So belittling and thinks she is so amazing. She sucks.

Worse professsor ever. Her voice is annoying. She gives double amount the homework as other math professors which says a lot being math 112 is a lot of work for everyone. This class is the most failed math class at U of A and part of it is because of her.

Yslas was the worst professor that I had. She treats the students like they are high school students, is very rude, and condescending. We had homework assignments due every week and expect us to have the same level of detail that she doesn't even teach us. Aleks wasn't helpful, luckily the exams were easier than the actual homework assignments.

She doesn't actually teach her students she allows ALEKS to teach you and then gets upset when you answer the questions of how ALEKS told you to instead of how she wants you to. She is not accommodating to anyone's situation during the pandemic. People cannot skip an exam for any reason.

When there is class she doesn't teach, she goes over like 2 problems then asks how our days is. When you ask for help it is very hard to understand what she s saying. You basically have to make a group chat with the smartest person in the class and then have that person teach the class.

She is the worst math professor ever. She doesn't even lecture us. Someone else records videos for the "lecture" in which there are only examples of things how to do. I would end up with an A, but there is no teaching. There is one live class in which she just tells us what do next week and one or two examples. Don't take this class.

She is the worst math teacher I have ever had. There is class once a week for 50 minutes where she does 1 or 2 of the easy problems and then the rest of class she asks us how our days are and wastes the time. The exams are so much harder than any of the daily work and sometimes are not even the same topics. ALEKS taught me more than she ever has.

This class was hard and it's algebra. You could get the right answer on a homework but you get it wrong over something stupid. HW is graded extremely tough, and it's very frustrating. The whole class is basically self taught because the videos don't go that in-depth. The classes were sort of useful, but they only went over problems.

DO NOT take any class with this prof. She is absolutely awful and completely unaccommodating. I had COVID and several other illnesses, tried to show proof to make up work and she completely denied me. I'm ending with a grade lower than anything I've ever received in my life. AVOID HER at all costs.

This was the worst class I have ever taken. In brief, Yslas was a hard grader and was very unsympathetic towards students. The content of the class is easy and understandable, but getting a good grade is extremely difficult and help is rarely offered. I have always been a high achieving student, but the expectations for this class were insane.

Way too much content for a college algebra course. This was my third year doing algebra to prep for calculus and the amount of work required is blown way out of proportion. I feel sorry for anyone who doesnt know the material from previous classes, and good luck learning anything due to the pacing if you don't.

Since we only have class once a week everything in this class is basically self-taught through pre-recorded videos. There's also A LOT of work to get done every week, and it can be hard especially if you don't know how to do the problems EXACTLY how she wants them. Overall this teacher assigns a lot of work every week and doesn't teach that well.

When I say that this was the worst class I have ever taken, I am not lying. For starters, the examples in the lectures don't even help. Aleks taught more than the lectures. The grading is weirdly specific too, one little thing and it's just wrong. The professor is nice though, but she'd only go over two easy exam examples and that's it.

Prof Yslas is the worst math instructor I have ever had. She would spend the entire online lecture talking about irrelevant things and would take the last 10 min of class to go over a problem or two. She did not care about her students AT ALL and honestly, it's hard to even consider her a teacher when all the material we covered was in ALEKS.

Professor Yslas does not seem to care if her students are struggling. Many of us spoke up during zoom about how we felt unprepared for our first exam, how some of us couldn't make it to tutoring sessions and she laughed at us and said "that's unfortunate". She spends 30 minutes of class time with useless icebreakers when we could actually be taught

She is literally the WORST professor I have EVER had. If you get her drop the class or switch professors. She does NOT care about her students and she does NOT like to teach. Voice is very annoying too.

This professor does not take the time to review or care about students opinions. When asked to slow down she will not, when asked to review she will not. She has little to no care or understanding for students outside lives and thus when she is asked for further explanation she directs them to tutoring or office hours instead of defining her work.

This class was terrible. Catherine Yslas would start off class with questions that did not make any sense. Also, she didn't care about the students. We would ask her questions about the graded homework and the only thing she responded with was "read carefully" the homework was graded terrible. She seems to not care about how we feel.

For the first 40 min of class she will talk about something random like Cheetos that no one cares about. You have 10 min to actually learn math and when there is an exam coming up its apparently your problem to learn the rest of the material that they won't teach you. Which is their job. It is not worth the 3000 I will never take her class again.

Not a very helpful professor at all!!! I definitely would not recommend taking her class. Many students addressed their concerns with her and she simply shows us that she does not care. We have to learn the actual material outside of class which sucks because then what is the actual class for? Dont take this class she is terrible at teaching.

Hate her! I had her for 2 semesters in a row (not by choice) both times I got F's. at least half of my class has F's. she doesn't teach anything and doesn't explain what she does teach. On zoom, we ask her questions about the problem and she either ignores it or doesn't give a direct answer. My mental health seriously deteriorated due to math 112.

She doesnt care about you, shes here for her paycheck. She is a horrible teacher, she spends the first 20 minutes talking about random stuff then spends the rest of class zooming by practice problems. If you ask her a question and she doesn't like it she'll say "go to office hours." Do NOT take her, if you have her LEAVE, worst teacher ever.

Yslas was the worst teacher I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. Her voice was incredibly grating and would cause me intense migraines for the entire day after class. She goes over the easiest problem possible and sends us on our way. Written homeworks are an automatic F. Even if answers are correct, you'll be subtracted points.

She does not care for her students and chooses the easiest problems to go over. The homework is so difficult, and she deducts points over the smallest issue. The quizzes are nothing like what you learn in class, and her camera quality is so bad it' not possible to take notes. Oh, and if you work while doing school she thinks "it's unfortunate".

There's a bare minimum required for teachers when it comes to teaching, and honestly? My 7 year old cousin could do a better job explaining math. The homeworks were disproportionately difficult, relied on you having an originally high score in Aleks, and were downright impossible to complete. If you are able to switch out, please do.

I had her in the Fall of 2020, so i understand that online teaching is not for everyone. However, it would be nice to know that thousands of dollars of tuition could afford to get students a better educator. I relate to many other students with regards to her very disorganized teaching style and her inability to answer simple questions.

Teaches like its elementary school but then gives hard homework that dont even come close to matching examples from in class. Doesnt seem to want to teach her students anything close to the homework.

I don't recommend Catherine Yslas as a professor. She teaches awful lessons that aren't relevant to the homework. Not to mention she becomes malicious if you don't take notes during her awful lectures. I don't think the University is a right fit for her, she should try a community college or pre-school. It's sad students pay for this "education".

Ysals is AWFUL. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS I am in Math 112 and yesterday was the 1st exam. I was worried because the small amount of content Yslas goes over in class never relates to the hw she assigns. Same thing with the exam, she had not taught us 97% of it. It was all foreign to me and many of students. She does not know what shes teaching at all.

Doesn't teach anything, expects students to learn college algebra from ALEKS alone. ALEKS crashed today and I was worried about getting the assignment in on time. I emailed her a heads up that there are issues with ALEKS. I assume many students did as she posted to the D2l "If you have problems with ALEKS, then you need to contact ALEKS Support."

This class is perfect if you want to be teleported back to highschool and are looking forward to the typical condescending and way-too-fast way that's normally taught. Honestly the content done in class isn't terrible, but good luck on the homework. It's much harder than what you do in class, and it's graded so harshly you won't ever get points.

She is a terrible teacher, I have asked questions in class and to no avail. The homework does not follow any form of what is happening in the lecture. She teaches incredibly fast and you cant retain any of the information. The only way you will do well in this class is prior knowledge. Even the SI dont help so dont bother.

Awful teacher. She calls out people for no reason and embarrasses them. The lectures are OK. But the homework we get afterwards is way harder and time consuming. Sometimes, she assigns three or more assignments per day. If you can take someone else, please do yourself a favor.

She is the worst math teacher I have encountered in my academic career. If you could choose another professor do yourself a favor and choose anyone that isn't her. I went to tutoring and would still fail her homework assignments. Be prepared to have the majority of your time taken up by this one class.

She only gets through 3 questions max in class and expects us to learn the rest on our own. She lets the TA grade all by himself and he is way too strict for the lack of information they teach us. She talks down to her students and makes them feel dumb and says "if you are not in Eller, you probably won't be able to do this". DO NOT RECOMMEND

I took this class during Zoom time so it might have been a little different but I was having a full on crying balling my eyes out panic attack during on of the exams and she still made me take it on zoom and gave me no extra time or extra help. I got a 30% on the exam and it screwed my grade for the rest of the semester. DO NOT TAKE!!!!

Worst math professor ever. Treated students like children and did not teach well. Avoid at all costs. Impossible to get an A even when going to think tank. Not understanding. Would 100% not recommend her or this class. Take at Pima if you can. 3 midterms (all different units). The last midterm and final exam are a week apart.

She is not good at teaching. If she stopped teaching then bent over and farted for the whole duration of the class, the amount of math knowledge you will get will be equal to when she tries to teach.

Avoid this class at all costs. Yslas is the worst of the worst in the already horrible math department. She assigns 3x more homework than other professors and classwork does not accurately reflect the homework that is done outside of class. I recommend working with your peers in this class and also going to think tank and office hours if you dare.

Do not, under any circumstances, ever, EVER take a course taught by this woman. She is incapable of leading a discussion or giving a coherent lecture. Do not waste your time, there is nothing to be learned from Catherine.

This professor is horrible don't take her class. If this class wasn't required I would have dropped it after the first week of class. She doesn't care about correct answers only if you do it the way she wants you to do it which she barely explains. I have an A in every other class but this one and there's a reason for that this professor.

Truly a miserable class, Yslas does not care about the students and it shows. Almost 80% of grade was tests, and the rest was brutally graded homework assignments. Takes down to students and was just an unpleasant person. Do yourself a favor and take a different class, trust me!

Prof. Yslas gave very unclear grading criteria for homework and treated students with very low respect. Despite being a college-level course, I was treated like a kindergartener and hated the class. The only good thing I can say about her is that she was very accessible outside of class and willing to help during office hours.

There were constant written homework assignments weekly. She never cared that students had failing grades in her class. Instead of evaluating her own teaching, she would tell students to "do better next time." She would drag the class longer than the ending time. She was not understanding of students. She made students feel like they were children

she is an awful teacher. for math112 she assigns an excessive amount of homework and grades very tough. I have spent hours on assignments just to get a 60. her written homework have no correlation to the work being done in class. she moves through it so quickly and is hard to follow. her notes are all over the place and hard to keep track of.

The class is review if you are coming from Pre Calc in high school. Other reviews don't lie, homework is rough and there is lots of it. Aleks is used here. Written homework isn't absolutely terrible unlike other reviews make it out to be. At the very least, there are office hours. Main takeaway is that it's more busy work than actual learning.

Get ready to be held 2-5 minutes after class ends because she will cram in one last problem and at that point people packed up and are struggling to get those notes down The homework is extremely difficult and has barley anything to do with what we learn in class. If you do not utilize office hours it will be difficult to get a good grade.

Math is hard enough at UA, if u actually want to fail and feel the need to pull your hair out every-time you receive a grade from this professor then take her class. The TA's are so unhelpful. The written homework are next to impossible to receive above a 65% on. The tests so hard. The professor is rude and does not care about you.

I was a straight-A student before this class. The tests are challenging and Yslas does not prepare you well for them. The written homework is not related to the tests whatsoever. Even the tutors agreed the homework was not related. I spent nearly 20 hours a week in office hours with Uday and Jorge and they are the only reason I passed with a B.

Encourages questions but is rude when questions are asked. Doesn't understand how to use gradescope yet half of the classes assignments are done on gradescope. Very bland voice and has judgmental looks if you openly answer a question incorrectly.

WARNING: DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!!! I thought I was being crazy. She treats the students like kindergartners. She makes us switch seats EVERY SINGLE class which creates unnecessary stress. Gradescope is not an intuitive platform to use and the homework material is NOT taught in class. She doesn't speak clearly and is not a good teacher.

Absolutely terrible professor. Uday and Jorge are great. I would highly recommend choosing a different professor if you would like to be treated like a college student. Along with this, she makes students do impractical group work for majority of class instead of teaching. Then, Yslas chooses to cram in questions while class has already ended.

If you want to be treated like a middle schooler this is the class for you. She makes the homework much harder for the exams and when you ask her a question she is so rude. Luckily her TA's are amazing and they are really the only reason why anyone is passing this class. Overall I had a horrible experience and was stressed out the whole time

She treats students like children and doesn't know how to answer a question. If you ask a direct question she proceeds to answer anything except the question the proceeds to flip in on to you. Also so much pointless busy work not worth it.

This class should not be a 9 week it should be a full semester long, everything felt crammed and rushed. The tests are like actually impossible, I have a 60% average on them while the rest of the class is around that as well. I believe getting a b is impossible, so I dropped this class. The teacher is nice it's just that the exams are impossible.

I'm serious when I say you should try to get ANY other professor than her. She was the absolute WORSTTT teacher I have ever had. The class alone feels rushed and her terrible "teaching" makes it so much worse. Exams are NOTHING like your homework, study guide, or what you learn in class. Treat students with no respect. Blame you if you try to take a picture. Homework is not related to exams. Exams accout for 90%. NEVER EVER take her class if you care about your GPA. My friends get much better scores with someone else by doing only 15% of my work.

I am serious about this. She is a terrible teacher and switch out or drop if you can. Do not donate money to her. She assigns unreasonable homework and gives bad grades. I dropped the class before it is too late but I cannot get my money back. If it is not mandatory, drop immediately. Otherwise, try to switch if you can.

I was a good and healthy student before. But I ended up with sever mental health issues after taking her class. She never cared. I almost killed myself after receiving my grade.

She is unable to use the class time efficiently and she barely teaches. She expects you to spend ALL your free time in her office hours which is insane. Other teachers don't do that. Luckily I took a similar class before so it is easy for me. But it is very sad to see my friends struggling.

I learnt with my classmates and after-school tutors, not with her. She taught nothing in class. I paid for a teacher not a platform. My friends make money with platforms rather than paying for them. U of A is not a cheap school and this is so unfair.

I have to spend all my free time searching the Internet for the knowledge she was supposed to teach in class but she didn't. She only teach 15 minutes in a 50-minute class, which is insane. I am supposed to use my free time to work on-campus to support my education. I have to quit these jobs and her class is unrelated to my major. AVOID!

I took her class as a prerequisite of another class. I learned nothing but how rude a person can be and how terrible a person can be. She can't answer a simple math question I asked but emphasized on how good her teaching is. I am feeling like paying for being part of an experiment, which is VERY bad. AVOID!

She barely teaches and you are supposed to spend ALL your time in her office hours. She is unable to handle the crowds and she can only provide hints because homework counts. The hints she provided involved something not mentioned in her lectures. You need to hire after-school tutors to get a good score which is unreasonable.

She is against free speech. She encourages you to ask questions but she doesn't provide a satisfactory answer or a sufficient enough answer. If you ask additional questions, she chooses to ignore you or criticize you. Sometimes she directly tells you to ask her TA not her. Very bad. AVOID!!!

She ignores any questions that question the materials she taught even if she is wrong. Her grading is mysterious. You will receive 0 if you chooses your own methods even with the correct answer. You will get canceled immediately if you tried to question her grading. There is NO SPEECH FREEDOM in this class. AVOID! She is by far the WORST.

She doesn't teach and she encourages you to learn with your friends in groups. My friends and I knew nothing about this class before. She asks questions in class and picks a random person to provide an answer and the leaves the question alone. She stares at you if you questions a random answer from a guest. WORST experience ever!!!

Let me describe her teaching: You switch table every class and she asks a question randomly. She picks a person to answer the question and provides no feedback. You can't question anyone's answer even it is incorrect otherwise she calls you rude. She is a SUPER RUDE person. I honestly don't know what she is doing as a teacher.

She is a bad teacher who can't answer a simple question. But her TA is a good person who helped me a lot. However, her TA was fired because of her incompetence. I then dropped the class because I can't stand such a person. She is a dictator who loves power. You have no freedom if you are in her class. Drop before it's too late. AVOID!!!

Your bad experience in the first several weeks will be your experience the whole semester. Drop immediately if you don't like her. There are many other good teachers. Run fast. She is COLD-BLOODED and will not give you a good score. I almost ended up with mental issues by choosing her class. NOT RECOMMEND!!!

I have to leave my comment here because the comments in the university terminal goes to her directly rather than her department. She is unable to answer one simple math question and treats everyone like kids. Her teaching is unrelated to the exams which leads to low grades. Drop as soon as possible before it is too late.

She kept blaming her TA in front of me when I asked her an academic question, which made me confusing and uneasy. I only need an answer to moly question and I don't care about her relationship with her TA. She answered my question by blaming someone else, which is unacceptable.

Focusing on non-math problems in her lectures. Unable to answer a medium math question, even a question about functions. She did her job by selecting "guests" randomly and let them teach you which is unacceptable. Plan to drop.

She is OK to work as an after-school tutor but she is not able to hold lectures. Homework due everyday and they are unrelated to lectures AND exams, which is unacceptable. You are supposed to spend 3x time of the time in the course description barely to pass. Her course design is a failure in any sense and she avoided suggestions. Not recommend!!!

I am serious about this, ALL the negative comments about her are true and I am not biased. The homework is not doable solely with her lectures. I expect some improvements but now I give up. Luckily I can drop with a refund. Cannot use my student loan to work with her. Thank you, RMP!!!

She refused to answer exercises in her own notes even if she assigned them as before-class work. No solutions are provided either. I can't understand the point. No solution, no grading, no interpretation.

Never once thought about writing a review about a teacher no here, but she has convinced me to warn others. She uses AI to grade exams, so if you are not clear with your answers, the AI docks you. Took this for a GPA boost, but wanna drop out instead. She is a poor communicator and an even worse professor. AVOID AT ALL COSTS

The materials are not that difficult. I took similar classes when I was in high school and everything went well. The only difficult thing is her grading system. She failed her job as a teacher.
