Worst Teacher i have had at any level of my education career, i wish i would have dropped this class. But i did get an A in the class and didn't do anything. If you feel like sitting through the worst 10 weeks of your life take her.
Smart as hell, definitely an art snob. Intersting to listen to, but tough and a seemingly inconsistent grader. At least 1 curveball on each quiz. I learned a lot, though not sure my grade will reflect it. Either ya like her or hate her. Worth a shot.
She taught me so much about how to look at art and identify where, when, and how it was created! If you come to class and pay attention, you can't help but do well! Gotta respect a full-figured woman confident enough to wear a black leather skirt!
A funny lady, in a very snide and ****y way. Knows a great deal about art, and is a good prof. However, her quizzes are highly demanding, almost gratuitous. Expects a hell of a lot.
Show up open-minded and you'll be fine. Interesting readings and 4 quizzes; even an extra credit field trip! She's super helpful and wicked smart. The only prob I had was dealing w/ elitist honors kids that ****ed about her desire to challenge us.
This wasn't a "real" Art History class, but she fit an INSANE amount of information into 8 weeks and made it all clear, fun, and relevent. She's funny and cool and highly recommended.
What a hard teacher, and this is supposed to be an easy class.
If you want a blow off class, this is not it! Course work is extreme...way too much, not to mention her grading. My friend just dropped because there was no way she could pass the class. I'd do the same, but I can't afford it. Take another teacher.
HORRIBLE
Very Good Teacher. Goes over a lot of art and makes everything clear. Keeps you awake by having you write ALOT of notes.
She is extremely intelligent and has a good sense of humor. Quizzes are pretty tough, but if you take good notes in her classes you will do fine. Lectures can be a bit boring, but you really learn alot. Her course influenced me to go to the Louvre in Paris last spring break.
i wasn't interested in art history at all before taking her class. she was extremely interesting and very brilliant. even funny at times!!! this was one of the best classes i have taken at depaul!!!
If you want to waste your time and money, go ahead and take this class. I didn't learn anything in the class. All she does is talk from the minute class starts to time it ends. I was always interested in art, not after her class. She is also unnecessarily tough at grading.
Way too much work for a 100 level course. Extemely hard on grading, very boring, too much memorization. Attendance is a must. Plan on going to The Art Institute more than once. Would not recommend.
This is probably the hardest 100level class out there. Not only is it extremely boring, grading is terrible. You will be there for the entire 90min everyday and all you will do is take notes. Makes you memorize 60 slides and puts 6 on the tests. This class is a joke. Don't waste your time or $$
Ready for 90 minutes of note taking non-stop if you take her. Unrealistic amount of memorization. Final was on 6-8 random slides of about 75...you must study all 75 and hope that you remembered those 6. I took her to give her a chance and was proved wrong- listen to these ratings-all true...
She knows her stuff! I was amazed at how much information can go into a 90 minute class. But I enjoyed it anyways! Show up to class and take good notes (there are a lot of them) but it really is good. Not for slackers, those that like art will like this class. I loved it and want to take it again!!!
IF U WANT TO MEMORIZE 50 MILLION PICTURES I SAY TAKE HER.ALL U DO IN THIS CLASS IS SIT AND TAKE NOTES FOR 90 MIN.SOME OF ITS BORING SOME INTERSTING.PERSONALLY SHE IS BORING,AND REFUSES TO EVER BLAME HERSELF FOR BEING LATE.TESTS ARE DIFFICULT AND IF U DON'T CITE CORRECTLY ON UR PAPER SHE WILL HURT U
If you want to learn about art and the history that shaped it, this is the class for you. If you are one of the whiners that judge classes by how easy they are, then maybe not.. Of course those poeple eventually get weeded out anyway, so may as well take this professor and learn something.
Not the easiest class, but the take home midterm and final make it a lot easier.
She is a nice woman, funny and helpful. The art we looked at was beautiful, but I wish there wasn't so much note taking. Don't take this class at 8:30 am! Thank goodness I had my coffee every day or I would have fallen asleep like others in the class.
I took an online class with this teacher. She never gave feedback as to how you were doing in class participation nor did you get any feedback or grades on homework. You got a MAJOR project at the end of the class unrealistic for those who are taking art for general studies. Very nice person; not a good teacher for online teaching.
Class was sometimes long and boring but if you study and do well on your paper you will do fine. I would take her class again!
She's really nice, just do the readings and you shouldn't have much to complain about...fair grader as well.
Do NOT take the exploring culture through food class. It sounds like it will be an easy blowoff but its not. Getting to and from the restaurants takes forever, you will not be out on time, there are tons of group assignments at the end, you will never receive a single grade back from her, she never answers any e-mails, and she is a bitter and rude.
Very nice woman and very very intelligent, she definitely knows her stuff. A rediculous amount of notetaking though.. She's very helpful if you ask her questions in class, but don't try and email her- you'll never hear back from her. My only complaint is that out of the 50 slides we were studying for the midterm, 6 were on it.
While the concept sounds wonderful, the restaurants visited aren't very accommodating for those with specific diets (vegetarian, kosher, etc). It took forever to travel to and from restaurants and she was not a very pleasant professor. Very opinionated and rather rude.
This class nearly destroyed my interest in high art. It was more of a memorization class than an art class. She told us to memorize more than 100 paintings, yet only 5 were on the exam. Not very helpful either; she once missed an office hours appointment. Her grading is strict, more suitable for a 300-level than a 100-level class.
do not take this class. Waste of a Friday afternoon (12-4). She takes the class way too seriously. She makes you study more about the country than food. You dont get grades back. Reflections every week. Your always late to get back. More importantly, Zurybida made this class so unpleasant by being there. She is very arrogant and rude.
continued from previous review i just did.... she is politically incorrect. She has offended many people in my class. When discussing Indian food, she talked about how much she hated Indians that answer service calls. She asked a black kid if people thought he played basketball because he was black. When discussing African-American food, she ...
continued.... referred to when blacks were called "negroes" for no necessary reason. When a girl was talking about her dad cooking dinner, zurybida cut her off and asked "So your dad is single?" which offended her to some extent. She once also had the nerve to take a cab home from a restaurant over 30 minutes away from campus while we were all....
continued... while we were all waiting for a bus. Another thing i forgot to add was that after she asked the girl if her dad was single, she next said "Dont worry, I'm taken" She is very unpleasant and i strongly suggest that is more enjoyable and during a better time to have class.
OMG I almost forgot! After a girl missed class because her grandma died, zurybida had the nerve to ask for PROOF that her grandma died. So the girl brought in something from the funeral and zurybida TOOK IT and WOULDNT GIVE IT BACK TO HER!!!
HORRIBLE. shes incredibly rude, you never get out a minute early of the four hour long class. Its more about culture than food. Interupts while giving presentations and most of the time its to point out what you did wrong. On haloween took us to a restaurant over an hour away didnt get back for an hour n 15 min. while she drove away in a cab.
Very rude. Definitely not hot. She has a sense of humor, but definitely rude.
youll never find your grades. she made a girl miss a $400 flight cuz she was too lazy and inflexible to let her take a final at a different time because we didnt find out the time of the final till like 2 weeks before
Rude, doesnt give grades back, you get a grade at the end of the quarter and no explanation. Classes get out late because of her poor planning, will leave you 45 mins away from campus at the end of class and expect you to find your own way back. Take another class. Trust me, food class sounds fun but you spend more time taking notes than eating.
ok... she did not grade ANYTHING and gave me a random A at the end :) it kinda sucks not to noe where your at throughout the quarter but this class was ok. the restaurants suck and you get out late all the time. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS unless u wana be bored out of your mind
I took her Exploring Chicago's Diversity Through Food class. If you think because of the title it is going to be easy you are WRONG! The final was basically trivial pursuit. I found her to be very pretentious. I never felt comfortable around her and I never got a single assignment back from her. DO NOT TAKE!!!
Think taking a food-based explore chicago class sounds fun? Well it's not, especially not with this bitter old hag teaching it! She is incredibly rude, the restaurants we went to were all horrible (except for one) and incredibly far away to boot, meaning we always got back way late. Her final was also sadistically hard and trivial crap. DON'T TAKE!
oh, and forget about grades either, you'll never see a single one. The assignments are also overly hard, and all the stuff covered is worthless in every sense. There are good ways to look at the city's culture, and then there's the mind-numbing drivel you have to endure when taking this class. None of it was enlightening or educational in any sense
Ok, she is not a bad teacher at all! You get the choice of 3 2-3 pg essays or one 9 page essay (easy). One short quiz, midterm, and final (easy). I don't get why she gets poor reviews, I did not apply myself too much, and thought this class was not bad.
she def. sucked!!! never any grades, loud mouthed, rudest teacher I ever had! she did not tell us what was on the final and the final was too hard at that! i thought taking a foods class would be fun but she made it the worst 4 hrs of my life! not to mention my class was on a friday...so we always started the weekend of horrible. she made it into a
I took her for Explore Chicago Through Food. She did not seem that bad at first, but as the class progressed I never recieved a grad efor any paper or reflection I had done. Her final is not that bad, but the lectures were a joke for a four hour long class. I would take but be weary.
AWFUL, you will never get any feedback and she is a bore.
Don't understand all the bad ratings, she tried very hard to be engaging for all of the students which I really appreciate. She's nice, she's approachable and I thought she was a very fair grader. She has favorites, but she doesn't count that against the others in her class. I found her class enjoyable and learned a lot.
I liked her teaching a lot. Class is just pretty much constant note taking but the midterm and final are not hard, if you can memorize stuff it'll take you two seconds to finish. You have to write an 8 page paper about a topic the only difficult thing about that is its length. she has favorites and jokes around in class good teacher overall.
Talked FOREVER about things that had absolutely no relevance to the class. Never got any of our work back. She would usually let us leave at 4 but we would be all the way across town so it ended up taking an hour to get back to Lincoln Park and even longer to get back to the loop. title of class makes it sound like fun but it is NOT!
She's soooo nice! and her class isn't that hard. All you have to do is memorize. If your never gonna show up, this class isn't really for you, but the material isn't that bad and she's stright abotu what she wants. Kinda babbles sometimes, but over all a good teacher and easy A.
I don't understand why Professor Zurybida is getting loads of negative comments. She is seriously the coolest lady ever. Not to mention she has the funniest sense of humor. Don't be afraid to take her class. This lady is great and she made this topic SO incredibly interesting!!
she's not that bad.... but she teaches this 100 level class like it's a 300 level class. she talks too fast for you to take notes, and expects a SIX PAGE PAPER on a piece of art WITHOUT using internet sources. kind of funny, but not really.
She's a very nice lady and very into the subject (kinda funny too). Though I admit the 8 page paper was a bit much for a summer class, if it were a reg. class it wouldn't have been so bad. Quizzes (4) are easy if you take notes & study a little before. No book, don't really even have to read the stuff online either if you take notes.
Took her summer course to fill my A & L requirement. No text. Take notes in class and study off the slides she puts on D2L. There was an 8 page paper on a piece of architecture but it wasn't so bad. She made the class very interesting and fun. Learned a lot! Highly recommend her.
prof. zurybida is kinda awesome. classes arent mandatory, but if you dont show you probably wont do well on exams. just saying. and she is really good about making time to talk to you if you have questions. she did require an 8 page paper without any internet sources. but seriously suck it up, take her class, and learn really interesting things.
Prof Zurybida is very helpful..she'll take her time to make sure you fully understand everything she is trying to teach! the paper was easy, but the exams were pretty difficult...over 100 slides to study from and only about 5 are on each quiz. I had a rough time with her class but she gave me a good grade..she is an easy grader..just come to class!
Teacher actually provided some useful and interesting facts, but lectures were mostly boring being 4 hours long. Sounded like a fun class at first but it turned out to be a drag in the end due to her rudeness. The only good parts about this class was leaving class for food and NO final. I would choose another LSP class before committing to this one
Chill class, kinda rac1st but dont take it serious. It's true you don't get grades, but i doubt she is a hard grader. I got an A in the end and it was't too bad. No final, reflection papers (1 page) pretty much every week easy, 2 presentations,5 page essay on a movie about food.
I took this class online. She is not a tough grader and the material is not hard -but- the amount of work she assigns have become annoying. I'd rather do a few longer assignments than multiple, small, tedious assignments. So, be prepared for large but easy workload for her online class.
I took this class online and regret it. She assigns way too much work to do every week. She clearly does not take into consideration that her class is not the only class her students take. I would completely avoid her online class if you are not prepared to spend most of your time on this class.
Worst class I've ever taken. AVOID this class.
I am someone who likes to look for the best in others. I am usually good at it, too, but with this class (and specifically this teacher)...well, I can safely say that there are no redeeming qualities. In fact, I have lost faith in all humanity. I could write pages on what she did ineffectively, but there's a word limit on the comments section.
I liked the class and she was very knowledgable on everything covered. However, she was ALWAYS late and didn't give feedback on ANY of the 4 papers we turned in (even when I emailed her for feedback). She was a good but very irresponsible professor. Don't waste money on buying the textbook for this course.
Worst experience I've had with a professor yet. Assigns an over the top amount of homework, very rude to her students, and her lectures will put you to sleep. Find another class! I'm learned nothing.
Worst professor ever. If you're taking her Exploring Cultural Diversity through food class, drop immediately. The class sounds fun, but she makes it a hell for all of her students. Even the student teachers don't like her.
Taking this class is something I regret doing every day. Boring lectures, the Professor is unclear and rude, and you will have TONS of homework. Drop the class while you can.
This is a 4 hour long class, on a Fri., awful. You think you would leave the classroom being "Explore Chicago", only happened basically three times the last 3 weeks. She MAKES you participate. If you hate talking in class, don't take her. She also makes you read LONG readings due every week in class. Then, a bunch of papers with no feedback/grades.
do not take this class. period.
She requires you to do an impossible amount of work. I can't wait for this semester to be over. Doesn't even pertain to my major yet I'm spending most of my time doing her assignments. Also very unclear about her expectations. Assigns so much work that she can't keep up with the grading. Definitely do NOT take her. Go with someone else.
Yes she expects a lot but she really is understanding. If you are really interested in art and don't mind doing a lot of work than take her class. The book is very informative and she is very intelligent about the material. If you make a mistake on a post she will give a you a chance to correct your mistake.
She does assign A LOT OF WORK. I you really want to learn and are interested in art history it is a good class and she is very intelligent about the material. This teacher has been so understanding and helpful towards me this past week that she deserves a medal. It is a class that if you put forth the effort and try you will do fine.
Expect to have readings every day that are no shorter than 20 pages. Class is relatively boring. However, if you show up and do the papers? Chances are you will pass no problem. Class was easy just boring.
Wasn't the kindest professor and assigned insane amounts of reading and papers for the type of class that it was. Homework time would have been better spent on other classes. She made us do some really pointless assignments that did not promote learning the subject. She also assumes everyone in class is an 18-19 yr old freshman, which is annoying.
This course with this particular professor really killed my experience with learning art history as well as ancient civilizations. Zurybida assigns an insane amount of homework/paper -- so much that even she herself cannot keep up grading with. If you have option of not taking her course, pick something else. It'll save you a lot of time.
A friend warned me about this professor but I signed up anyway. Then I quickly dropped her class before I could significantly suffer, since I could tell within the first week that she had the inability to acknowledge that students had other classes besides hers, assigning an excessive amount of work for her class.
Most of what was said is true. If you do care about your grades, don't take her. SEVEN weeks into class and besides one discussion and one hmwk, quizzes are the only thing she graded. You'll have no idea where you stand in the class at all. She seems nice and knows the material, but what's that worth if your failing and have no idea.
If you're an Art History major you should take her class. She really seems to like this topic. If you're anything else take this class with another professor because she assigns homework and does some really questionable things with the class that are highly annoying to anyone that has less than a burning passion for the subject.
This class was bull. She didn't even grade assignments until the end of the qtr so you never had a chance to correct mistakes you were making or learn from them. Just get flooded with rude remarks without any chance to improve. Awful teacher who isn't interested in actually teaching, just making you memorize names and dates. Take a diff professor.
The amount of work for this class is absolutely ridiculous, also her instructions on many of the assignments (especially the term paper) are unclear and hardly helpful. This class honestly takes up way too much of my time and I took because I thought it sounded like a fun elective for my last quarter, don't make the same mistake as me. She's bad.
I could go on and on about how horrible this class was, but I'd rather not. Just don't take it.
Im a business major and spent majority of my time studying for this class. The expectations are beyond outrageous and very time-consuming. Someone needs to look into this professor and the workload she puts on the students. I cant belive this is normal as it is. Stay away, do not take this class!!!!
This class has been such a stressful nightmare to take. She is hardly helpful and gives tons of work, WAY TOO MUCH. The assignments she gives are so unclear and hard to understand what she wants. Her work load is triple what a normal class gives. It is unbelievable that it is even allowed how much she gives. Don't take her class. Not worth it.
I could tell you how awful of a class this is and what a bad professor she is but I would just read what everyone else has said. It is not worth the time and energy to take this class so don't.
Very annoying and rude teacher. Too much work and not enough time.
This class is one of the hardest I have taken. Most of my time is spent reading or trying to keep up with this class (the amount of work is ridiculous). I know she was a hard teacher but I really wasn't expecting the amount of work for this class. Even with her layout the assignments are still unclear and you need to make sure to check your email .
Dont get me wrong she is a very intelligent woman and knows a lot about art, but she was more concerned with knowing more dates and names rather than actually learning about art. There is a ton of homework during the week and seems never ending and I spent most of my time doing homework for this class rather than classes that related to my major.
This prof has to be the worst professor I have had at DPU. She waited until after all three essays, the midterm, and the final paper were submitted before grading. She had like 8 things assigned a week and was so unorganized. Also she uses canned lectures and material from as far back as 2013 as seen by the time stamps on posts. BAD BAD BAD PROF.
Ok teacher, reasonable amount of coursework, was helpful and responsive to emails however the fact that she repeatedly referred to medieval Europeans as our ancestors and called Muslims Moslems was VERY weird to me
Just avoid this class if you can. Most of my homework during the week was for this class and I felt as though I had to push off other homework for my major just to keep up with the homework in this class. At least 10 hours a week spend on homework. Just don't take it!
Worst class I have ever taken at DePaul. I’m taking three other classes for my Major and this class had more homework every week than the other three combined. One of the toughest graders I’ve ever had because she looks for the little things and doesn’t really care for the big picture. Don’t take this class if you aren’t an art major.
Run far away from this professor. The amount of work she assigns and her expectations for this class are absolutely ridiculous. Not only that, but requiring us to *physically* go to the art institute to pick one painting to write a minimum of 6 pages about, in the middle of midterms week, was the last straw for me. Never again.
Don't take this class, this professor has unreasonable expectations of students. I can't focus on classes for my major because of her and I WISH I looked at her rating here before I took the class. By far the worst teacher I have ever had. Stay far away from this class!
This is the worst class I have ever taken at DePaul.Steer clear of this professor. You need to get at least a 60% on her quizzes each week to have next week's material available to you. Sounds easy right? Nope. Lots of the questions on the quiz are not in her horrid unorganized lectures or the textbook. She also uses lectures she recorded YEARS ago
My mental health is in shambles. Avoid this professor at all costs.
Completely unreasonable expectations.Every week there are many assignments to be done, more than any class I have taken and she requires everyone to get at least a 60% every week on a quiz just to move to the next week. Normally this sounds reasonable, but she makes them IMPOSSIBLE with every question (25-35 questions) only being worth 1/2 a point
I've done more work for this class than all my other classes combined this quarter, and I've still missed a fair amount of work. Being a 100 level class that is absolutely wild. If you are a masochist you will enjoy this class. Otherwise, stay away.
I get not wanting students to cheat, but using Examity for the final was terrible. I often fidget and look around when I'm thinking, but if you do that with Examity they automatically think you're cheating. I was more worried about the person watching me than the exam itself. I couldnt even think straight since I was so stressed about being watched
I wish I had seen the ratings before taking this class. If history or art is not your major take a different elective. She is unrealistic with her work A LOT, and her logic behind things makes no sense. She also had someone watch us during the final, which was nerve-racking.
do not take this class if you're not prepared to put most of your focus on it. she only allows paper notes, and everything you need to know for the midterm/final is only given to you during the lectures, and if you miss a class you are going to be spending a lot of time trying to catch up. she doesn't post any slideshows until right before exams.
Catherine is an amazing professor and is very intuitive about the material. She is really passionate about art and is simply such a wonderful teacher. She is very clear on the assignments and what is expected of you, I would love to take this course with her again and art history isn't even my major, she is misunderstood, justice for this woman!
If you are an Art History major, take her class in person, and actually pay attention you will have no problem. I missed at least 4 classes and completely fumbled the essay portion of the final, but got an A because of a decent paper and otherwise paying attention to identifying info of the artworks. People who don't listen will struggle.
I've given up on everything. Don't do it y'all, find another prof.
The textbook is not really necessary. She is super nice and understanding, but it is a LOT of information so make sure to take rigorous notes. The tests require a lot of studying so be prepared. There is a six-page paper worth 40% of the final grade. I recommend giving yourself plenty of time for that. Hard class but interesting lectures.
Lectures go a bit fast but she makes lessons easier to remember by including her students in historical examples. She will have you physically write notes, which I thought was fine and gave me a chance to draw visual notes about the artifacts. I can tell she's passionate about teaching art history just keep up with your notes and you'll do great.
The workload is unnecessarily bulky and the only guidance from the professor comes from lectures recorded years ago. The term paper seems doable at first, six typed pages about an exhibit in a Chicago museum except internet sources cannot be used and all students must travel to these museums to take photographs that can be found online. !!AVOID!!
I will not lie, this class is hard. It is not easy, and it's not meant to be. I feel like a lot of the people who are rating her badly were expecting a cutesy peek at a Picasso painting and to half-heartedly express what art means to them. This
She was an okay professor but the final was ridiculous. My friend spent 20+ hours on the final. The final was basically us teaching us. We didn't use anything we learned in class. There was no class recordings. Attendance wasn't mandatory but you had to go and take notes to pass the midterm and quiz.
Prof. Zurybida is a nice lady and very passionate about her subject. However, she doesn't even know how to use D2L. She was late to class multiple times, never responds back to emails, posts wrong information about assignments, and expects you to pay attention to long lectures while simultaneously rushing to write down notes.
Does not let you use any tech whatsoever in class and also does not update the online classroom or post any lectures online. If you miss a class it's really hard to catch up. Also assigns so many readings, and the textbooks are really dense. She also isn't very helpful in office hours. If you're not a HAA major i don't recommend.
I am an art history major who is minoring in classical studies and archaeology. She is a great professor, but can be somewhat monotone at times. For the final, it was a bit stressful, as we had to memorize over 70 images and their contexts. Other than that, it was okay! Just be prepared to memorize and attend every class!
Honestly a tough class but worth the work. If you study the images given in class and stay on top of HW you should be good. Emphasis on DO YOUR HOMEWORK and REVIEW for the quizzes/final. Uploads to D2L were sometimes corrupted but just reach out to her to let her know.
Professor Zurybida is passionate about art history, though the workload can be heavy. Attend class, take detailed notes, and use Unstuck ai to supplement your studying. The final may be challenging, but engaging with the material makes it manageable.
Professor Zurybida was an excellent instructor and I'm so glad I took her class! She gives very dense lectures but creates an environment that allows students to feel comfortable asking questions. My class was really small so I got a really personal experience working with her. She has a clear love for what she does and it is extremely contagious.
She was a nice person but this class is terrible. She treats it like we are art history majors and requires so much of you. I felt most of us thought it was too strict and confusing. For a 100 level class it should be more simple but I feel like this class makes you major in it. Assignments are long and detailed. Must get 70% on quiz to move on.
This course was way harder than a 100 level course should be. I spent more time on this course than for my 2 other 300 level courses combined. This professor was extremely bad at teaching and unhelpful. She threw a ridiculous amount of information at us with very limited time and expected close to perfection.
Each week: an extremely difficult quiz that took several times to get past a failing grade of 60, (open note so that should speak to its difficulty) there was an hour long video and questions sheet and 80 pages of textbook reading, up to 1 and a half hours of pre recorded lectures, and a discussion post or project that could take several hours.
She treats us like we are art history students, instead of people who have an interest in learning art history. After taking this hell of a class my interest is no longer. 40 one star reviews says it all. Don't be a dummy like me and think you can handle this class. You can't. No point to torture yourself.
Very difficult class, the quizzes are insanely hard and they did have a couple of mistakes in them which lowered my grade. The video worksheets take 2 hours to complete and its very unfair that this class is this hard, which it shouldn't be.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. Every week you have a quiz that is extremely hard, final paper and final exam (Is proctored) which includes and a small exam portion. Just horrible. Too much work. Stressed me out and I am not an art major AT ALL.
