Very lively and good natured, makes class fun. Always willing to help every student, but the class is not easy!
Dr. Reck's lecture's are entertaining and very understandable. She's really helpful and fair. Best teacher in the chemistry department!
Dr. Reck is awesome! She is extremely helpful and realizes when you don't understand. She makes lecture fun and entertaining. Best chemistry professor I've had so far!!
she's so boring and ignorant of even basic chemistry stuff..in my class, she was'nt able to answer even simple science questions.it was my AI who helped me overcome a dorky/so called stern teacher who fails students liberally. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS!!!
she gives a first impression that she cares for her students but later fails them without care/conscience.Also she's dumb and has a remarkable history of screwin' lectures with no prep.I'd rather do self-learning than go to her class. HER RATING:D-------
Although I got a good grade in Dr.Reck's course, I didn't learn a thing from her classes/teaching. Absolutely no education& fun from her side..with 2 semesters of involovement with Ms.Reck, I strongly feel she should go back to teachin' in grade schools.
She would go extremely out of her way to make sure you understand material. Very knowledgable and gets points accross much easier than the book ever could. A wonderful teacher!
Inorganic Laboratory Teacher... Not an easy class by any means due to the subject material
She is the best teacher out there. Help me so much in organic and explains the material very well! I learned so much from. If you can get Reck do whatever you can to have her!
I had her for Inorganic and she was a lot easier than my first inorganic prof so I liked her. I moved on to Orgo 1 with a VERY difficult prof, while others had her for Orgo 1. In Orgo 2 (w/o Reck), those who had previously had her were lost. She is a go
...feels like youre back in high school. very "cutsie" and quiz oriented. good i suppose if you dont learn well on your own

She was a very good teacher and very helpful. When I needed help, she was there and willing to help. I never thought that I would enjoy chemistry as much as I did this past sememster
She is the****:)
Makes no illusions about the fact that the class is extremely difficult, but lets you know what you need to do to succeed. Always willing to meet and answer questions, really wants students to do well. Makes class better by cracking jokes, very informal. Great teacher!
Reck is an awesome professor. But be prepared to work hard in your class or the tests will kick your ass. Your grade definitely depends on how much work you put into it.
Great teacher! The only issue I have is that she doesn't use the textbook quiet enough.
pretty good
I slacked off a bit in the beginning, but fortunately I caught up, because you should really study for her tests. Quizzes are just evil, because AI's are the evil graders! I do better on the tests...Make sure to study the notes a lot!!! don't skim through stuff...study thoroughly...
Her tests are easy but you have to study her notes. I haven't looked at the text book yet. But overall I liked her motivation and dedication to teach the class.
Well, guys, its organic chemistry, its not a cakewalk. I liked her though, she did a very good job. I really didn't go to lecture religiously, but you can learn just as much from the book as her lecture. Tests are pretty easy, quizzes are kinda hard. Just study, pay attention, and youll be fine
It's a difficult course, but Dr. Reck is easily one of the best profs on campus. She genuinely cares about her students and makes every effort she can to help everyone understand the material. The tests are easier than the quizzes but the class still requires a ton of work and effort in order to do well in it.
She was nice and funny and made lectures fun, but I don't feel that she prepared me adequately for organic II. Make sure you study the material a lot and know it inside and out or organic II will be a nightmare.
She was fun to have as a professor.
She is a great prof.... Go to her office hours and make sure she knows you! This will come in handy when you have questions in and out of class! Study her notes AND the book!
I had her for C117 and could at least tolerate her. Yet, in orgo she was unbearable. She tries to make jokes but they are just dumb. She says "does that make some amount of sense" every 5 minutes. And you don't get a thing out of her lectures, she goes thru the material very fast and in no detail what-so-ever. I learned more from reading the text.
HORRIBLE! I ended up dropping her orgo class because she skipped around too much in the book. No common pathway to learning the material. Tests/Quizzes were hard. I took the class in the Summer with a visiting professor and ended up getting a good grade. i would not recommend her at all. If you have to take it, do it the summer with someone else!!!
She did a great job, but the material is still difficult!
She is easy and the most fair a chem professor can get. She gives you all of the old quizes and test, you don't see any new material on the quizes and tests. The only reason you wouldn't do well in her class is if you do not study the material like you are suppose to. If you do book prblms, all practice quizes/ and tests and go to all the classes y
Great Teacher, but material is very difficult. In the beginning she says that you should study Orgo every day. She's not kidding, spend AT LEAST 4 hours a week on this class and you've got an A. She's very helpful and posts plenty of relevent quizes/tests online. USE THEM!
Extremely fair, very personable as long as you don't get on her bad side. Posts tons of old quizzes and exams (which is what I focused on most when studying; they're very relevant to what will be asked). Don't let your guard down in the beginning--it gets tough with all the reactions in the second half of the semester.
I think reck is an amazing teacher. end of story.
It's orgo. Of course it's gna be hard, but study. She does a great job explaining, she cares, she posts old exams and quizzes (VERY HELPFUL). Study hard, you'll do fine. Best prof there is considering the difficulty of the material.
go to lecture and she explains everything. built in extra credit on exams. not that hard if you actually study
What a great prof. Her office hours are money. Orgo is tough but she'll help you out. Do the problems in the book because she sometimes asks them on exams VERBATIM. On the downside, she's determined to stop any kind of cheating, so don't do anything stupid, or else it'll get real ugly. Really cares about students, great person to get letters from.
Great professor. I loved the class. I didn't do as many of the homework problems as she provided but I recommend that you do them! Study, go to class, and you will succeed.
Of course Orgo Chem is hard...but Dr. Reck made it very interesting and was always willing to help. Anyone who talked poorly about Dr. Reck is bitter because they didn't do well in her class. If they did not do well, it was their own fault, not Dr. Reck's. She is always available to help you out and clarify any material.
So nice! Will make a great mom someday.
Professor Reck is GREAT. Very fun, really cares about her students, always there to help or clarify, etc. Capable of explaining things in more than one way. You definitely get out of it what you put into it. All you people who said bad stuff about her are just mean. I would get her for every class if I could. Thanks, Dr. Reck!
sweetest lady in the world. very helpful...she is warm and inviting for question and help. there for her students like a mom. take her class.
A good professor on her own merits - looks even better when compared to her coworkers.
She's extremely funny and she knows how to turn lame dull organic chem into a fun saucy subject. One of the best. She is very helpful and she encourages 2 way response in class.
I love Prof. Reck! She is a very fun person. I thought I was gonna fail Orgo but she has made the material very easy to understand/follow. I would definitely recommend her if you are planning to take a class as dreadful as Orgo.
Dr. Reck = Legend
GREAT TEACHER!! Lecture is awesome, very thorough explaining concepts. Sometimes pace of class seems slow. In-class quizzes are a little stressful, because they cover a lot of info in a short time period. Provides old quizzes/exams and lecture notes. Make organic fun and shares interesting "real-life" applications. Tests are fair, but are long.
Not a bad professor, but the class is dreadful. ONLY take 341 if it is absolutely 100% mandatory. There are options for non-majors that I didn't know about. I probably could've killed R341, but I didn't know about it so I'm stuck with a C in 341. Reck is a great professor though, it's just tough subject matter.
In all honesty Reck is probably the easiest organic chemistry teacher at IU. Needless to say if you go on to take organic 2 with pellerito you are probably going to struggle since she is much more difficult. I recommend taking honors organic 1 so you don't have a rude awakening with organic 2.
She makes things crystal clear and most importantly she makes her expectations clear. I absolutely enjoyed Organic because of here (which is saying alot). Her fault is that she may make things slightly too easy in comparison to the people who teach Organic II. I currently have Martha Oakley and have had to study much differently...and harder.
Prof. Reck is a really good teacher and makes lecture interesting by using real life examples. She also has a good sense of humor. Her exams are challenging.
She is easier than most other chemistry professors. She is bubbly to say the least, which you may or may not like. Chemistry is hard in general, but she will do her best to help you succeed.
Having anyone else other than her for lecture makes life rough in Chem 117 ~ run fast if you see the name Prof. Tate ~ the final is very HARD
Though class material was generally overexplained, other information such as what was expected from students was neglected. This is a very rigorous course.
she was honestly awful. Worst experience with a professor yet. The class was poorly organized and the professor had trouble understand my questions. I feel Professor Arnold who taught the lower level should have also taught this next portion.
I second what the person before me said, she is one of the most awful professors in the entire world. She does not help her students when they need it. Her lectures make no sense and she does not provide us with enough information to complete most of the labs done in this course. Terrible professor. Worst I have ever had.
The BEST chemistry professor I have had. If you get the chance to take a Chemistry class with Reck - DO IT.... she is one of the best and most clear professors. She also is helpful in office hours.
BEST professor I've ever had. She was very available during office hours and explains the material clearly. She's also funny and really nice and personable.
If you put in the time to do recommended book problems and get your lab reports checked over during office hours than the class is hard but manageable. Reck is really nice and helps out a lot.
Reck is the best professor for C341. A student asked her if there was anyway to make a trick question from some material, and she literial said back to him, "Im not here to trick you, Im not going to make a question that is trickly on purpose".I almost got out of my seat clapping.IF you fail C341 or C117, then you didnt study and that is your fault
Reck's the best chemistry teacher I've had so far. The material is fair and she will explain it to you if you need help.I have literial heard her say to a atudent asking about trick questions,"I wont write a question to purposly trick you..."I almost got out of my seat and clapped. IF you fail c117 or C341 with reck you did study and its ur fault
The material in this class is very hard but Professor Reck makes it fun. She really wants students to find enjoyment in Organic Chemistry like she does. She isn't trying to make you get a bad grade either- she just wants you to learn the material. Go to office hours!! Ask questions and DO NOT GET BEHIND!! Practice problems help alot!
Good teacher. Organic chemistry is supposed to be hard, but she makes it as easy, fun, and interesting as possible.
Organic is a hard class.. don't expect otherwise, but Reck makes it understandable. She breaks things down to the point where a monkey would understand it. That being said, a lot of people WILL fail this course. If you try hard, go to office hours, and study your butt off.. you will not fail. Anyways, Reck is great and a lot of fun.
Wonderful professor - she explains things very clearly and makes chemistry very simple. She is also very humorous. The only bad things I can say is she tends to not put the right answers for math related problems on some exams quite often, but she throws the question out. some of the questions were not directly covered and are tricky.
She is very helpful and teaches well. The only thing I found difficult in this class were the tests and quizzes. Oftentimes she had questions on the tests and quizzes that weren't directly covered and could be very challenging.
Prof Reck was an okay teacher, but her tests were awful. Half of the time the correct answer either was not an option or their were more than one correct answers. I do not recommend her for C117.
Professor Reck is a great teacher. Chemistry sucks and the course would be hard no matter who taught it, but she explains the material well and offers tons of help resources.
Great teacher, but incredibly difficult tests. You could study for hours and still get a B. She liked to think that once you understood the theory you could understand every application of the theory, so there were things on the tests that you may never have seen before.
The best professor I've had at IU. Highly recommend her.
Best teacher I had. Out of a class of 600, she knew me personally and went out of her way to make every lecture interesting, funny or both. I liked her so much that I signed up for her Organic section next semester.
Awesome professor!
Organic Chemistry is a difficult subject for just about anyone, but Reck makes it a little bit easier to understand! Her exams are pretty difficult, but as long as you utilize the book, go over her lecture notes, and use Study Edge for their practice problems/chapter reviews, you will definitely get an A.
I was terrified to start organic chemistry because of its reputation but because prof. Reck is such a great teacher and cares so much about her students' success that I love it now and have actually switched my major from bio to chem. Overall highly recommend her, she's awesome!
Professor Reck is quite possibly the best Chemistry professor at IU. She's funny and very helpful. Only drawback is her exams are very tough, so be prepared to put in the hours (or days) studying.
I have had Prof. Reck for 3 semesters now- she literally is the only teacher that has TAUGHT me science. she is extremely tough and so are her exams so if you cant study 20 hrs a week- dont take her. for a premed student- she is AMAZING. she cares, works hard and if you put in the effort, she will too.
This prof is hard but only because she knows that her students are up to the challenge. She's an awesome teacher (I had her for C117 as well) and is always willing to adjust her hours and make time to meet with students. No curves, so study hard! But its worth it!
I failed the class but loved the method Professor Reck utilized. She is an outgoing individual and explains the material clearly; nonetheless, practicing problems out of the book is EXTREMELY VITAL and a MINIMUM of 15 hours for studying is most beneficial for you!
Dr. Reck is extremely unorganized. She talks to her students like they have no background knowledge and dumbs down every concept to the point where you arent even learning, except for her useless memorization techniques. She is NOT punctual, helpful or quick at returning grades. If you love chemistry dont take reck. You will not learn chemistry.
Organic chemistry is a tough class. I actually enjoyed taking this class with Prof. Reck. Tests and quizzes are extremely difficult. Even though I did not pass the class I felt Prof. Reck really helped students to understand the material. I would definitely take this class from her again.
I loved Reck when I started this class because she has a fun personality and relates well with students. It was great taking this class in summer because she made it easier on us. She did kind of get lazy toward the end; she even forgot about evaluations. I also didn't like that she often said, "I don't know. I just wouldn't know."
Reck lit the blackboard on fire a couple days ago so I'd say she's pretty cool.
Reck is a decent professor and has great notes but ZERO sympathy for her students as real people. If life gets in the way of your ability to do the work for her class (e.g. death of family member), don't expect her to work with you at all.
Probably the best chemistry professor I've ever had. Explains the material very clearly and keeps the lectures interesting with her personality. Tough class and exams, but if you put the work in you'll do fine.
Very well versed in the material and will take the time to help her students despite her extremely busy schedule. She's also very good at rephrasing things in ways that are less confusing than the textbook. Do the recommended work, study, and ask her questions you have and you'll be solid.
Amazing professor! She explains everything so it's really easy to understand and she is super helpful! She's funny and makes it enjoyable to go to class. Best professor so far!
She was alright. compared to orgo 2 her exams are super easy, but they didnt seem like it at the time. her notes were ok, but I learned a lot more from the book (*in order to do well on the quizzes, study the book). Also, her office hours are useful, but she wont ever recognize you if you go. I didnt like her as a person but the class was ok
She's the best! So freaking funny!
Dr. Reck knows what she is talking about and is more than helpful for students who choose to ask for it. However, the class is hard and the exams are harder. There aren't many points and if you don't constantly study you won't do well. She WILL help you though and even though I hate chem she made lectures interesting enough that I paid attention.
Dr. Reck is a great professor. She has a genuine interest in the course and wants to see students do well. She can be tough, but you'll get an A in C117 if you put in the effort. Go see her during office hours- tons of help!
Amazing professor! Super nice and helpful.
Very helpful professor. She does a good job trying to keep the lectures as interesting as possible. Funny as well.
This class is hard, the averages on all of the exams are around 70%. Dr. Reck is very nice and willing to help clarify material whenever she can. I would definitely recommend use of office hours with professors and AIs to clarify anything you don't understand. Reading the text is not very helpful, but the end of chapter questions are.
Hands down, the most energetic, genuinely helpful teacher on campus. She deserves even more credit than she receives. I have never had a professor be more trully excited to see her students learn.
By far the most efficient, clear, entertaining, and helpful lecturer I've had for chemistry. Questions are welcome and she eagerly learns students names as well as what the class is struggling on in order to better explain what we're talking about. I would highly recommend her; she make organic chemistry, dare I say it, fun.
Dr. Reck's overall teaching ability is very high. She is genuinely interested in her students to do well; however, she will not curve exams to boost grades. Attend class as much as you can because she did occasionally do bonus point activities. Labs are difficult, but this class isn't designed to be easy.
Reck reminds me of a high school teacher in the best way possible. She's there for you. She'll know your name. She doesn't expect us to be geniuses, and is more than willing to stop lecturing to explain something. Although it is important you do a lot of work outside of class, Reck tries very hard to make Orgo as comfortable as she can. Just great.
Dr. Reck is spectacular as a lecturer. She is clear, concise, funny, engaging, and very down-to-earth. Exams are demanding but fair, given how much quality preparation she gives students in a variety of ways. She makes every effort to get to know students by name and treats them as colleagues and friends.
Best professor I have ever had hands down. Organic chemistry is a hard subject with lots of material, but she made it easy to understand. Attendance not mandatory, but you definitely need to go if you want to do well. Plus, she's hilarious! I talked to her after class every time I was confused, and she always explained it with so much clarity.
Reck is hilarious and relates to students and makes lecture interesting and fun. The class still isn't the easiest and you need to do your homework problems, but if you do and study you should do fine. She is super sweet and willing to help students and wants them to do well in the class and learn about chemistry.
Hands down best professor I've had at IU. Cares about students, extremely knowledgable about chemistry and will go above and beyond to help students. Challenging course, but with Prof. Reck it's enjoyable and if you study hard, do all problemsworksheets an A-A is feasible on all exams. Take C341 with Prof. Reck if all possible, won't regret it!!
Prof. Reck is easily the best professor I've ever had. I've never gotten so close to another instructor, she's an amazing teacher and even better mentor. The lessons I learned from her stretch far beyond Organic Chemistry. Do ALL suggested work, read for clarification, go to office hours, and get to know her, your life will forever be changed!
Reck is a very approachable professor and is humble about her knowledge. She honestly wants everyone to do well and gives encouraging emails weekly. As long as you do your part, she will respect you and help as much as she can. If you do all of the chapter worksheets and read the chapters before lecture, you should be able to get at least a B.
Class is tough, but required. Dr. Reck is by far one of my favorite professors at IU so far. She's organized, clear, and knowledgable on the topics presented. She is very clear about what's expected of each student and is very willing to help them get there. With that being said, she doesn't accept BS or curve tests. What you know is what you know.
Prof. Reck is as helpful and clear as they come. Organic chem is hard, but she is extremely helpful.
She's kind of intimidating in office hours but still very helpful. For the most part very friendly and approachable, and a really, really good teacher. Makes orgo easy with the way she explains things. Really helps you understand the material instead of just memorizing.
Organic chemistry is a notoriously hard class anywhere. Professor Reck is probably about the best professor you can have for such a rough class. Clear, funny, helpful, and optimistic, she will make you feel good even if you're failing. Attend every lecture and discussion, do every practice problem, and read every chapter and you can pull an A.
Even though I did not get the grade I was hoping for, she is a great teacher, and she taught me how to love orgo. Go to her office hours (- if not anything else, make sure she knows your name-)! She only gives a curve to students who "deserve it", so make sure she knows you are working hard or you will be left out.
Reck has easy to follow outlines that you fill in as you go. She tests mostly the material on the outlines and the discussion worksheets. Make sure you fill out the outlines, they're important. Reck herself is a bit dorky, and funny, she does her best to help students though she is intimidating to approach. it's a hard course so do the work.
Dr. Reck is such an amazing professor! She really tries her best to help you pass, but I think we can all agree that orgo is not a walk in the park. She's wonderful, but you have to work for your grade. I personally struggled but I used clutch prep which really helped me better understand.. It saved my grade. But def take Dr. Reck!
Reck is one of my favorite professors on campus is also a very nice person to get to know as she also is heavily involved in undergraduate groups. She teaches organic but makes it very enjoyable and easy to learn, for a difficult course. Highly recommended she is probably one of the best chemistry professors, homework is essential in the course.
This class is hard - it's just the nature of Organic Chemistry. That being said, I LOVE PROFESSOR RECK! She is really engaging and her lectures make the course so much more manageable. You will have to do (ungraded) homework to pass and her office hours help A LOT. She's also really sarcastic, funny, and relatable.
she tries to make the lecture easier and uses a lot of information from lecture for the actual exam, she is good at explaining. also fun sometimes during lectures. if it wasnt for her, i probl wouldnt have passed the course.
Professor Reck is awesome! She is hilarious but also a very in depth teacher. She has definitely prepared me well for Orgo 2 even though I wish I had a better grade. Definitely re-write the lecture notes and do the DG worksheets. It is all on the exam. Practice, Practice, Practice and you will succeed.
Love Reck as a person, hate her as a professor. She does not follow the book at all and makes orgo so much harder than it should be. She is hilarious, but not a great teacher. Taught myself from the book in addition to going to lecture and averaged in the 60s on all of my exams. It would be so much easier if she followed the book & was organized!!!
The class has a negative stigma for being hard but if you go to class and do the problems she recommends it's pretty easy. She tells you what you need to do to get a good grade you just have to do it. Awesome professor!
Professor Reck as northing short of outstanding. She is the most sincere professor I have had the pleasure of learning under so far as she genuinely wants her students to not only succeed in the class but also outside of the classroom. Patient, kind, and hilarious. Can only pray that I will get another professor as great as her again.
I absolutely love professor Reck. Not only is she an amazing professor, she is hilarious and makes learning organic not so completely terrible. If you get a chance to take class with her, do it. Hands down one of my favorite professors at IU.
Great professor and her notes and discussion worksheets reflect the quizzes and exams.
Reck has amazing intentions for her students. She knows that the material is hard and she does all that she can do to make the subject easy to understand. You know what to expect on exams and quizzes.
Awful. Just awful. Lecture notes contradict each other often. Exams are just poor - poorly worded, petty, and her keys are flat out wrong for several questions. She barely skims the surface in lecture so it is anyone's guess what she expects you to learn for the exams. I had her for 117 and loved her - but at this level, perhaps take w/someone else
Professor Reck is the worst. People only like her because she's "funny." She is condescending and rude and acts like any question you ask her is a burden. She does not convey the material well and teaches it fast, as though she's reviewing, not teaching it. The book is your best friend. If you can, take it with another professor.
Was afraid of how I would do in orgo. Gave a great intro to orgo and made it simple and clear. Very good lecturer - humorous. Tests and quizzes also are very clear and concise. Discussion worksheets are key to success. Wonderful professor. Kindhearted and wants you to do well. Take orgo with her - you won't go wrong.
Very tough class, but she made lectures pleasant and the class bearable. I only had her for the first eight-week of orgo, she did great with teaching the beginning material but not sure how she is with synthesis mechanisms(later in the course). She is a very kind lady and really does want her students to succeed. I would definitely recommend her!
Amazing, amazing professor. Catherine Reck is a true gem. Not an easy course, and she'll tell you that herself. She will, however, help you succeed if you are putting forth the effort (which will be a lot). Don't miss lecture. Do all the problems in the book (yes, all of them). Do all of the past exams. Do everything you can, and you'll do fine.
Orgo 1 sucks, but she's a good teacher. Her notes are pretty good and her exams are usually fair enough.
Professor Reck is extremely rude when dealing with students who don't come to her all the time. She tells you one thing will not be on the exam, then magically, it's half of the exam. She is not funny, she tries way too hard.
Reck is one of the best professors I've ever had! The class itself is not easy, and she will be the first to tell you that. Reck cares a lot about her students and is fairly straight up about what will be on the exams. She is hilarious and very easy to talk to. Organic would have been miserable without her!
Her lectures were fantastic with examples that you can learn so much from. This is a tough, tough class; you need to put in at least 12-18 hours a week for an A. Read every word of Klein BEFORE class, do every problem on the worksheet and in Klein, and review for every quiz and exam. The second half can be overwhelming; keep calm and study hard!d
Cate Reck 100% cares about the success of her students. She gives you everything you need to succeed & more to pass the class. She was a great lecturer & made organic enjoyable. Everyone talks about how they put in 20 hours of work a week, but I put in 3-4 on regular weeks & 8-10 on exam/quiz weeks & was fine. REWRITE NOTES & do the worksheets.
The whole first half of the semester I got all C's on everything and spent 10-12 hours a week, once I formed a good study group and with all the extra points I got up to finish with an A-. The synthesis is the most important for review, also use other textbooks too besides McMurray and actually go to discussion. Cate rocks
I love this Teacher.
She is an amazing lecturer with a wonderful personality. Explains things clearly and concisely, and repeats any important information to make sure you know what to study the most. Reck rocks!
One of the hardest classes at IU by far but she's a great teacher and is willing to help her students whenever she can. She presents the material clearly and precisely. DO NOT SKIP if you want to pass this class, it's too hard to get caught up once you get behind. Take her if you want a good teacher!
Reck was the best professor I have ever had at IU. She made the hardest class I've taken the most enjoyable, and was always there for help. She holds office hours 3 days a week for an hour and a half at a time, where she is willing to help! Use office hours, go to class, and WANT to do well, and she gives you every resource to succeed.
C341 is rough no matter who's teaching it, but Professor Reck makes it almost fun. She reminds me of a cool aunt who will show up at family gatherings and get just tipsy enough to be fun to hang out with. Makes a lot of so-bad-they're-good chemistry jokes. I didn't bother to buy the textook - she put's everything you'll need on Canvas for you.
This class will make you work but I absolutely loved Reck. She was obviously on top of the material and was able to address the main issues that students tend to have. I was really nervous about it but it was actually a great class. Textbook isn't that important, but can be useful. DO THE WORKSHEETS
Cate makes the quizzes/exams, but her AI's grade them. She is so sweet and truly cares about students passing, she also has a great sense of humor. It is a lot of lecture, and I only used the book for practice problems. The exams are hard because they usually are worded or add in different concepts she didn't talk about. Pay attention, take notes.
She's an awesome lecturer; however, as a person she is all but that. Very defensive of her mistakes when students point them out (quick to say "oh, I'm just human"). Also has massive attitude problems. But that's outside the spectrum of her teaching abilities. She's a good instructor & that should be really all that matters. Get your grade & run!
Professor Reck made Orgo 1 a walk in the park. She literally gives you everything you need to succeed in the class (practice problems, worksheets, and awesome AIs) and truly cares about her students learning the material. Could not have asked for a better prof for the course!!
I love her, she's amazing. She teaches a difficult subject, but I feel like she teaches well, and so far I've done very well! I wish she taught C342 because I would love to have her again :(
I read these comments and was exited to take her. However, I do want to warn. She flies through the content and only gives one example of questions that are on test. Most of her questions are reasonable but you must memorize every small detail because she expects you to use your knowledge to "figure out the chemistry behind problems".
Cate Reck phenomenal. Her lectures are amazing; she takes impossible problems and makes them doable. Her class isn't easy; you have to practice every night, but she sets you up to succeed if you work hard. She's hilarious & always cheering you on. She understands what it means to be a student, and wants everyone to succeed. Would take her again!
She's a very good professor for Organic Chem. She expects a lot out of you but I feel like that's what comes with this class. Study consistently and you will do good!
She is an overall great professor. The class is pretty difficult though. You need to go to class and make sure you keep up with the material by studying every week.
Green book is completely useless. Lectures are too shallow to prepare you for quizzes/exams. somewhat funny but definitely rude. Not sure why she gets amazing reviews because her teaching style is awful. Retook at regionals IU campus, prof there was 100 times better at teaching this class than Reck. Reck overcomplicated an otherwise easy class.
Seeing other profs makes me love her... She makes a powerpoint and actually goes by it. Apparently that is a daunting task for most of the faculty. Pretty low bar, but Dr. Reck is the only prof who seems to pass it. Congrats...
Reck is the best professor I have ever had! She gives you everything you need to succeed in the class. Just seriously make sure you are studying correctly (active studying like flashcards and practice on whiteboards rather than reading concepts over and over again)
she is a good teacher but makes everything way harder than it should be. she took over orgo lab because she thought the guy before her was making it too easy. The average of the first quiz was less than 50% and she said "try harder." isn't that her fault for being a bad teacher if most of the class failed.
I have no idea why people speak so highly of Cate Reck. She makes her classes unreasonably hard. She comes off as funny and personable at first, but quickly turns to condescending as soon as you ask her a question. She's very full of herself and will never take the blame for her mistakes. Made my college experience significantly less enjoyable.
I am genuinely confused as to why her reviews are so high. She is condescending and rude. She sent the whole class an email at the halfway mark in the semester complaining about how many people asked to have a one-on-one meeting with her and told us we need to learn how to "self-reflect." I changed my major because this class was so bad.
She makes plenty of AIs accessible, but not herself, and is rude in response to questions and makes you feel dumb. Makes tons of mistakes, doesn't fix them and makes practice worksheets without answers so you have to teach yourself. Makes things hard for no reason, and schedules quizes on the same day as other orgo classes' exams, which she taught.
I've had Reck for other chemistry classes and she teaches those much easier than C343. I know I am not speaking for only myself when I say that she should NOT be teaching C434 as her tests and lab structures are way too difficult. Many labs throughout the semester were unfinished by many and the test averages were terrible.
Worst chem professor i've ever had. This being a lab course wasn't helping any. Some people teach concepts in the easiest to understand fashion, and some teach them in an overly complex manner. She's the latter.
Makes a daunting organic class seem fun but is also blunt and straight-forward. A great professor and a great person.
Got Cate for the other half of the semester after Pete left. God bless this woman honestly. She was understanding, very reasonable, and made the transition as smooth as possible. Amazing with communication. She cares about the students and handled the unexpected transition like a queen. Fair w/grades & exams too. Cate Reck for president of IU.
Although in the previous years I did not like Cate, she handled C343 with lots of grace and class after our instructor left 6 weeks into the semester. She was truly open to reason and made everything more flexible to us and did try her best to help us get acquainted with a new instructor. Although still difficult, she made the class easy to go.
She's honestly a great person and professor. Makes a really challenging class easier to handle. Love her
I wish I could have her again and again for chem. Its the hardest class I've taken, but she made it worth it with her weird humor and emails.
Exams are so much harder than anything she will ever explain. She often says "the exams will not try to trick you" This is a blatant lie. I studied for a week straight before the second exam and I still got around 50%. Explains concepts horribly DO NOT ASK QUESTIONS OR ASK ABOUT HER MATH SHE WILL BE VERY MAD. Does not care about this class at all
She is one of the best professors that I have had at IU. She does a really good job at explaining topics, and the exams look very similar to the problems in the book, on the worksheet, and on the lecture notes.
She is a passionate professor who loves chem. Its a really hard class, so just make sure you don't fall behind
I am retaking c117, this time with professor reck and jarrold. Reck is very caring, will stop if you have questions, gives many updates and lets you know exactly what to do to succeed and is a GREAT professor. 100% recommend her. Study hard, do the practice problems and go to lectures.
The only reason I did poorly in this class was because of Reck. Jarrold's topic were explained clearly and thoroughly while Reck's were all our the place and she doesn't differentiate topics in chemical bonding well. I do well on all of Jarrold's exams but poorly on Reck's and I studied harder for Reck's so what does that say???
She taught the first half of C117, which includes some difficult topics. She did a good job at explaining the difficult topics and making sure all students understood the material. By doing book problems and the discussion worksheets over and over, you should do fine in this class. Cate is a good professor and if you out the work in you'll be fine.
really loved having her for gen chem. She always wants everything to make sense to you and can really tell she cares about her students a lot and wants her students to do well. She explains everything with general concepts you need to know from each topic then by real world examples. I totally recommend her if you are taking gen chem.
Professor Reck is incredibly funny and covers material pretty well. The only reason she isn't getting a 5 is because sometimes during lecture when a student would ask her to explain something again, she would say "We don't have time for me to go over this again. Read the book." which was frustrating, especially when it was on a difficult topic.
Professor Reck explained concepts really well, taking care to backtrack when someone had a question in class. She was clear about what she expected us to learn for the exams; she did like to put a few trick questions in them, but overall, her exams were fair and based on material we covered in the textbook.
Reck is an awesome person, but explains things in a very convoluted and hard to understand manner. Exams are challenging although not impossible. Does not have mandatory homework, so that's a win. Definitely requires a ton of out of studying to do well -- YouTube is your best friend. Great person, very knowledgeable, but a little unapproachable.
This is a very hard class. Thankfully she posted lectures online so you did not need to go to class, but you need to watch lectures. You think you know what youre doing until its time for exams... retaking the class
Rude and condescending, pretends to act like she cares when in reality she does not. Her lectures are all over the place and difficult to understand. She explains things in a complex way rather than a simple easy way.
Cate is amazing. Her exams are very straight forward and in the same format as the packets she gives; I am now at IUPUI and the orgo profs here do NOT do that - be thankful. She also provides positivity and encouragement to students. Bottom line, organic chem is hard and you have to actively study and attend office hours to excel.
I took C117 with her, and she was rather rude when students would ask her questions during the lecture because her work was wrong. The exams were not very fair, and there were no packets to study from or anything like that, so you MUST use the textbook questions in order to study if you want to actually do well. Study the textbook!!!!!!!
Reck takes weed-out to a new level. Insistent on not curving a single thing, when a majority of the class is failing miserably. Explains things in the most complicated way and when questioned she responds rudely. NO amount of work prepares you for the exams or quizzes as they are filled with tricks after she says she doesnt trick students.
Professor Reck is awesome. People who struggle in this class are the people who are afraid of hard work. Go to every office hour possible. Get close with your AI. I had Zoe and she was the BEST. I also used the Organic Chemistry as a second language book and it was really helpful. It's really not as bad as people say it is...
She never would answer any questions in class, she wouldnt include examples close similar to exam questions in your notes. She always told us to learn the material on our own if we couldnt understand it in class because she would not go over material twice.
Having taken C341 and C342 with her, I judged her too quickly. She is tough but also fair. C341 was a nightmare for its own reasons, but I've realized after how she handled Pete leaving that she truly does care about the students. Material is very tough and yes you can't prepare for it, but with the right will and determination, you can.
Cate makes her lectures click with each other, which makes it easier to see the bigger picture. Her slides are clear, & it helps to look at them/print them before class. She knows there's a lot to get through so office hours are the best time for questions. It's not as bad as people say orgo is, but you MUST put in work every day outside of class.
Acts way too nonchalant about the extremely hard course and has a bit of a passive-aggressive attitude. She's 100% awful at math and gets super defensive when you're confused about how to do a problem (but the reason why you're confused is because she did the math wrong). She is dismissive in office hours and says you just need to read the textbook
My favorite professor at IU. She honestly cares about her students & about them succeeding and learning. Dont take a class with her if you dont want to put in the work, because you have to work in order to succeed in her classes but she is awesome and fair in everything she does & I can truly say she taught me something & bettered my education.
Took this class couple years ago and came back because to add a rating because she was my favorite professor at IU. I came in dreading C341, but it ultimately was my favorite classof at IU. Go to class and office hours. You have to spend the time on the material but Prof Reck is very available outside of class and really cares about her students
Organic 1 is not an easy course to teach, but Professor Reck is amazing at it. I took this course in Spring 2020 when we had an abrupt transition to online. Prof. Reck did everything in her power to help us out and it really showed. Of course this class isn't easy, you really have to work for it. But she provides great lectures and is accessible.
I wish Reck was the professor the whole semester of orgo. I like professor Brown as a person but I think she does a poor job at explaining things. Reck took her time and explained lots of things well. I seriously think that if Reck was the professor the whole semester, I would have gotten a better grade.
Reck is an amazing professor. This class is scary for good reasons but she made it a lot less daunting. She is great at explaining things and isn't just black and white in lecture. She will make a joke or put in interesting applications to the material.
Cate is so amazing. Orgo was very difficult, but cate helped so so much. If you are freaking out, go to her office hours and just tell her how you feel. I did this, and she offered me lots of support and assured me that I could perserverse! I bombed the first two exams and finished with an A-. I could not have gotten that grade w/out Cate.
Cate is a wonderful 1on1 professor and she makes sure you understand the material, so I do respect her. However, the way she structured the course is new this semester where has a MC portion on the exam now. This seemed great, however many of the statements she said to the class fell through due to disorganization and lack of proctors.
She is super funny in lectures and genuinely cares about the students. She also explains the material very clearly.
Great prof. Super funny and definitely cares about the students. However, expect this class to cause you emotional trauma and take up the entirety of your focus and time. No fault of the professor, the material is just super hard. Put in practice every single day and really spend a good amount of time doing the problems and worksheets.
She expects you to know everything and is very dismissive when I asked her questions, answered like I was stupid which brought down my self-worth and willingness to learn by a lot. I personally am a slow learner and not naturally smart and many of my friends feel the same way but every students deserve to be treated with the same respect and equal.
Cate is one of the best professors that I have ever had. She is so kind and actually cares about all of the students as more than just students-- she encourages us to take care of ourselves and always leaves nice notes at the end of her announcement posts for the week. C341 is a challenging course, but Cate makes it so much more bearable!
Cate's very kind, however she is so disorganized and changes what she says constantly. We have now MC exams, she said we would have retakes on the whole exam, but she changed it to just MC. Then she changes Exam 4 to be full short answer no MC. She also spends a solid 5-10 minutes venting about how she has 500 emails in class.
The other reviews about the retakes aren't her fault; she didn't even want to do MC but was required to. She is extremely helpful, patient, and willing to answer. She is very good at explaining things in an easy way. The content is hard, but her tests are mirror images of the worksheets and textbook problems. Do the worksheets. Attend office hours.
She is the best professor I have had at IU. Orgo is difficult, but she makes it clear what will be on tests/quizzes. The textbook is also helpful and so are her worksheets. She is so kind and encouraging and makes a challenging course less stressful.
One of the best people I know (and best professor). Without her I would not have made it through last year. Every student should take a class with her because she is such an amazing person and teacher. Wouldn't trade last semester with her for anything.
Professor Reck is great! Her teaching style is fairly quick but if you stay caught up you will be fine. There are very few things you get graded on so make sure to prioritize tests and quizzes.
Professor Reck is amazing! This class goes at a fast pace, and studying on your own is necessary for success. Take advantage of discussion worksheets, book problems, and practice exams. If you put in the work, you'll succeed in this class. Quiz and test are heavy, so really prepare for those!
AMAZING! MADE ORGANIC CHEM OK!
Best professor I had at Iu. She made organic chemistry super easy.
Cate was a great professor! She is super engaging in her classes and very nice. If you have to take organic chemistry, take it with Reck! Her lectures are more helpful than the textbook, but she will give you potential practice problems to use from the textbook.
Loved having Cate as a professor. She made the material easy to understand, and there are many resources given to us to help with studying outside of class. She's also very funny and made lecture interesting.
Dr. Reck cares about her students inside and outside of the classroom and wants all of her students to be successful. Listen to what she tells you to do, and you should have no problem doing well in organic chemistry.
Cate has been the best professor I have had in a long time. While organic chemistry is difficult, she makes taking the class so much less painful. She truly cares about students in every aspect, and will make sure she is doing everything she can to help you learn. I would retake organic chemistry just to take her class again.
Cate was one of the best professors I have had and she cares a lot about her students and how they do. They material is hard but she gives you every resource possible to suceed you just need to use them. Do the Practice Problems all the time and try not to get behind. Lectures are recorded but you benefit so much from attending the lectures.
SO GOOD if you have to take organic, try to take it with Cate Reck. She is very approachable, funny, and genuinely cares about her students. She is amazing at explaining tough concepts and her lectures are fast paced, but enjoyable.
Professor Reck is engaging and committed to helping students succeed. The workload is heavy, but she provides great resources like practice exams. unstuck AI and the textbook are also super helpful for studying. Overall, a challenging but rewarding class.
Take Organic Chem with her if possible. Although it is a difficult class, she was great at teaching it and is very easy to talk to. Taking Orgo 2 with her right now and it is going just as well.
Fantastic professor! During the rare problems us students ran into in her class she corrected and put forth the effort to make things right!
Cate is a phenomenal professor and person. She is super helpful and a no-brainer if you're taking Orgo!
Cate Reck is my savior. This class had some crazy content, but Cate is so wonderful at breaking it down for us. She's highly respected, almost everyone loves her. Her lectures are entertaining and grab your attention. She can be scattered, but we're all human. LIVE LAUGH LOVE CATE.
Very funny, entertaining, and knowledgeable professor. 10/10 Love Prof. Reck
I love Cate! I had her for both 341 and 342. Orgo is not an easy class but Cate is as helpful as she can be with plenty of practice materials, and she also keeps the lectures interesting! She is super understanding and helpful and shows lots of care for her students. I hope to have Cate again in a future chem class.
Best professor I have ever had. Took her C341 (Orgo 1) with her also. She is a great lecturer and very kind. Get to know her!
If you want your life to be easy take Cate Reck she's absolutely an amazing teacher. She breaks down the content well, not making the lectures long or boring. She's also super nice if you seem to be confused on the material go to office hours and ask for help. 10/10 recommend
Was lucky enough to get Cate for both semesters of organic chemistry. She is the best, and puts students first and cares for them all. Exams have lots of extra credit to adjust for the difficult course content, and her notes and practice problems are great. She is also very funny and energetic. Take orgo with Cate if you want to enjoy it!
I have had Cate for both 341 and 342 and have had an amazing experience. Although Org O can be a hard topic she gave you every opportunity to succeed with great lectures, and practice problems that accurately showed what you needed to know for the exams. She is a fantastic professor and deeply cares for her students and their success.
She is excellent at preparing you for what you need to know. She knows that orgo is hard for many students, but she provides more than enough resources to help you learn.
Professor Reck teaches this difficult class very well and is very likable.
She was an amazing teacher for Orgo and I would have learned a fraction of what I did without her calm, composed style of teaching. This is the hardest class I've taken yet, and would strongly recommend taking the Orgo help class (C240) for the entire semester along side this course.
She's ok. I feel as though people rave too much about her. Yes, did she explain concepts well, but she went super fast and constantly was rushing. Also felt like I could never ask her a question without her being rude and making it seem like I should've never asked to begin with. Super enjoyable class if you go to lecture and do the practice exams
I have no bad things to say about Cate. She is very direct with what she expects from you, is very encouraging, and wants you to succeed. She tries her best to make a very difficult class manageable, and is always open to helping you further your understanding. If you put in the work, this class is very doable with Cate by your side!
Cate was amazing! You can tell she really cares about her students and she explained content very clearly. At times I felt that her pace was a little fast, but as long as you read the textbook and do practice problems, you'll be fine.
Organic Chemistry is a hard class no matter what, but Cate is an amazing professor and wants all students to succeed. She listens to feedback and helps students understand the material with multiple approaches. If you are taking orgo one take it with Cate. I also recomend taking the orgo help class with it!
cate was a great professor! i think this was her first time teaching the course and you could really tell how much she cared about sustainability and she made it genuinely interesting. there were no tests or quizzes, you don't really need to take notes, but you should still listen to her lectures.
