She is super cute and funny. She is super flexible and you can pass this class no problem as long as you do the work.
I was really not interested in the class, but Dr. Clayton made it at least bearable. I would say the tests are pretty hard if you're not familiar with music. Lots of names of people but if you need clarification she is definitely there to give it to you. It was the first time it was taught, so it can only get better and she did a great job.
This class is a gem; go to class, pay attention, learn about the world, and get an A. She brings musicians to class occasionally, which is fun. She's the happiest professor I've ever had, always laughing and giggling; very pleasant. Her late-work policy is outrageously flexible; basically, if it's in by the end of the semester, you're golden.
Dr. Clayton is a wonderful, caring, and attentive teacher! I learned much more than I expected about world cultures through taking MUSC 3600. She explains concepts in a very clear, easy to understand/approach way. Attendance is not mandatory, but I went every time because I got so much out of her lectures! She is also easy to work with!!!
Easy A. There were 3 essays assigned throughout the semester but, as long as you don't plagiarize and meet the minimum requirements, she'll give you 100%. Chapter quizzes every week but you can do them as many times as you need except for movie quizzes, but most of the answers are online.
She's the happiest professor I've ever met; always smiling and happy! Late-work policy is amazing, have it in by the end of the semester and you're good! She brings in musicians occasionally & tries to make class interesting. Tests are easy as long as you study the review. Hardly ever used the textbook, but you do need the CD's for listening.
Three tests total with a few assignments each week. Taking it online I thought was really easy and manageable. Clayton is great at laying out exactly what you're supposed to do. If you read the textbook, it actually helps even though it's bland. She gives you a review sheet for each midterm that is GOLD. Review those concepts and you're good to go.
Cathryn is the best professor you will encounter at the U. If you want an easy A take it with her. Listening portion on the exam was the only part i did not like in her exams.
She assigns online discussions to participate but not very difficult. Just the difficult material. Some writing assignments and two concert reports. One 15 points worth extra credit concert report (DO IT!!!) Tests are tough but if you study, you will be fine.
I took the class online and there were discussion posts almost every week, but they were easy. Lots of quizzes, but they're all simple. Really easy grader- I got 100 on every assignment. However, the tests were really hard. I would study for 2 weeks in advance, yet the highest test grade I got was a 76. If you're a good test taker, its a good class
Prof Clayton is great. I took her class online. She encourages questions and provides lots of practice. Definitely recommend. She uses this outdated online CD things as a textbook. IDK. It wasn't very compatible with my computer. The songs wouldn't play and some functions didn't work. BUT she provided enough instructional material it was fine.
Professor Clayton is great! Although this subject was totally new to me, she made the class not so hard. I also had technical issues and she was so understanding. I would recommend.
I loved Cathryn. She's very generous and lenient with due dates, and I truly enjoyed her lectures.
I took this class online and I loved it. Professor Clayton lines out exactly what you need to do and when you need to do it. Straightforward class. I learned new things even though I've been playing piano for 13 years. I would recommend this class to anyone who still needs to fulfill a GenEd requirement.
Class was Easy. You don't really have to show up to class, just study the study guides she provides for the 2 midterms and final and you will be fine. Do the other small assignments in class and don't miss the easy points. Don't waste your money on the book, you won't use it. If you do attend class, she makes it fairly interesting
Cathryn is so adorable. She cares about her students and music. her class is so easy. just attend her review sessions a class time before the exam and she goes over her exam review materials. study off of that and you're solid. no need to attend class or read the textbook.
Took online survey of jazz to fulfill the FF requirement. The class has weekly assignments and quizzes with three tests. Studying for these tests is a must! If you complete the quizzes, and the study guide she gives you, you'll do fine. Prof Clayton gives extra credit and was easy to reach with questions.
Doctor Clayton is nice. She does a great job at making this class interesting. She brings in a few guest lecturers and instruments from around the world. Her tests are mainly multiple choice, a few listening, and a couple free response. If you attend the lecture before the test, she usually goes over everything that you need to know for the test.
I love her online courses! So organized, so I never have to guess what's coming up next. And I can always work ahead if I know I'm going to be busy. You get unlimited tries on quizzes. The papers are short and pretty straightforward. Just use her study guide for the exams and you'll do fine. Would recommend 1000% if you need a FF, DV, or IR credit.
Nice professor, is really passionate about music. I'm not a music major, so the class was sometimes boring for me. But she prepares you for exams.
This online class is very simple if you have a music background. If not, you will have to put in some effort. Once a week there is an assignment, but you only have to say you did it, and then a simple online quiz that can be taken as many times as needed. She is very helpful and will answer whatever questions you have.
This class is an easy A if you have done any music before.
Dr. Clayton is AMAZING!!! Her classes are super organized, and pretty easy. There's one basic quiz and assignment each week. She will give you tons of help, and is EXTREMELY lenient. There's no penalty for turning things in late, so there's no stress about deadlines. Would totally recommend her as a professor.
I took Music 1010 for the summer for a fine arts credit. No complaints. Fair grading, just make sure you study for the midterms. The class isn't too hard as long as you study. The study guides are useful for prepping for midterms.
The way Dr. Clayton taught her class was disorganized which made it difficult to take notes because you don't really know what to write. There are a couple papers and discussions, but she's an easy grader so as long as you do it you'll get full credit. She's also extremely lenient with late work which is a plus. Do well on the exams and you're set.
Good class. Lots of videos to watch. The technical stuff was hard for me to grasp. Workload wasn't too heavy. Grading was fast, which I appreciated.
The tests for the class are easy if you put some time in to studying, follow the study guide and use the flashcards and you should be fine. There are quizzes for every chapter, but they're not hard. Only a few papers, not graded harshly. If you email her, it may take some time, but she'll get back to you with a good response.
I took this class for my music minor thinking it would be an easy A class. It was for the most part; there were only a few assignments to work on at home, and attendance wasn't mandatory, but the tests really killed me! They are SO HARD! I got 100% on every assignment but I did terribly on the tests and even the extra credit didn't help a ton.
Fantastic class, fantastic professor!!!
This class was fun and interesting. Probably the best class you could take for the IR and Fine Arts requirement. She had fair tests if you at least cram an hour or two but if you didn't have the energy the extra credit or two will save the day.
She's not a bad teacher, but she didn't really do much, then again it's an online class. She's available and has a TA and they explain things well. I have a music background so the class was extremely easy, but if you're completely new there are probably some topics that'll be iffy. The tests are scheduled and taken in person on paper.
While this is just Intro to Music Theory, you can tell that Professor Clayton cares a lot about what she's teaching and who she's teaching. The textbook integration of the material is done well, and her supplemental online lectures are clear and easy to understand.
Really sweet woman. Understands that her class is a "Gen Ed." class so makes it genuinely interesting and fun. Really good study guides that prepare for the test too. You can skip a good amount of classes but I liked the class enough that I actually wanted to go.
Her lectures are great. She marks 100% on the homework as long as you finish them, and you can even turn them in late. So I thought this class was very easy until taking the tests. They are hard since you don't know what she expects, and you seem to have to know *every detail from class to do good. They also make up 3/4 of the final grade :(
Really easy class, especially if you already know a bit about music. The last part was tough for me because I didn't know any of the material, but I figured it out okay. You can retake all of the quizzes and homework until you get 100%, so you can get an A+ if you put in a little extra time.
If you show up to her class and actually listen, you will pass. The tests are usually 50 questions and are multiple-choice. They probably take about 15min to take. There are only 4-6 homework disscussions and they're pretty easy. Dr. Clayton is very nice and quirky. She doesn't dock you points if you turn a discussion in late. Overall good class.
Dr. Clayton was awesome. This course satisfied my International Requirement for the University of Utah. There is an online textbook for this course. It's really fascinating. If you study hard and read the book, you'll be just fine. Her class is structured well and quite reasonable. I highly recommend taking this class from her.
Professor Clayton's online class (MUSC 1460) was relatively easy for someone with a music background. If you have no musical experience, prepare for a lot of textbook reading and studying. Professor Clayton is always willing to help out if you ask. You have unlimited redos on all homework and quizzes, and the test questions come from the quizzes.
I really enjoyed this class. Every assignment is a quiz and you can do it over as much as you want until you get a good grade on them. Prof. Clayton was very nice, willing to work with you and answer questions. The material is very organized and presented well.
This class was taken for my international requirement, but it was a fantastic class to take, especially because I was interested in music. The textbook is a must when doing the assignments and quizzes, and the exams required a fair amount of studying.
Honestly if you have to take this class it sucks the tests were ridiculously hard. I took it online so in class will probably be a ton easier.
Worst. Class. Ever. For an INTRODUCTION class, there's way too much homework. Over 10 quizzes a week. And most quizzes have the same questions. There's also essays you have to write, and she doesn't even read them. She will give you 100% for just writing something, but she'll also write "Great Report!" This entire class was just busy work.
Horrible structure. Hours of videos and reading each week for this class. No lecture or any content from the professor themself. Class is based solely on reading out of a poorly written textbook and at least three or four hours of jazz videos each week. Tests are based on obscure, miniscule details that no one would remember. Very annoying class
There are weekly quizzes but they are based on the homework and on the chapter quizzes you are allowed unlimited attempts. If you don't like music you probably won't enjoy this class but passing it with an A will still come easy.
No lectures or lecture videos to watch. Mostly all the work is just reading the textbook and taking chapter quizzes that have unlimited tries. We did have an open book midterm, but the professor found out that people post the contents of the exams to Quizlet, so we were forced to use ProctorU for the final which is such a sketchy browser extension.
Maybe its the covid thing but it really doesnt seem like she cares... up to 4 quizzes per week and up to 40 questions in each quiz, all completely mind numbing. not really sure if there are even lecture videos to accompany the class, ive just been using the textbook. DO NOT take this class looking for an easy general, you will regret it.
Class is fairly easy, especially if you enjoy some aspect of music or want to learn. Its basically teach yourself which can be a downside but there are some lecture videos which are very helpful. If you work ahead you can finish the course really fast and get it done with. Learned a lot to add to my musical knowledge.
Dr Clayton is a solid professor she lays out the class well so that you know what to expect to receive the highest grade you want in the class. I took it online and there was a lot of weekly homework assignments. A lot of help can be found on quizlet for this. There are three midterms. If youre looking for an easy fine arts credit this is it.
Overall, she didn't do much aside from read from the textbooks in her lectures. You can almost entirely just use the canvas page and the textbook and never have to come to class.
The course structure is simple. read the book chapters, take the short quizzes, and then do a final chapter quiz. midterm & final exams are not hard if you do the work. i didnt even study! she lets you turn in the assignments on your own time with flexible deadlines. responsive. gives her own lectures for difficult sections in the book!
If you already have a musical background, take this class it'll be an easy A . If not stay away. I could do all the assignments easily as I already knew it all but if I didn't I would've hated this class. The videos help with nothing and the quizzes are so frustrating. If you get one part of 20 wrong then no points for the whole question.
This class has a ridiculous amount of work each week however you don't really have to do it all. Quizlet will be your friend and a lot of the assigned readings aren't graded. The tests are open internet so if you're good at utilizing that you don't need to study. Maybe this class is good in person but online it's just too much.
This was, without a doubt, the worst class I've taken. ALL the material on the midterms was not in any of the previous quizzes or assignments, and hardly anything counts in the final grade except for those midterms. On top of it all, the course material is utterly useless and unimportant.
Her exams are hard. I would not take this class. Quizzes and assignments does not correlate with the exam. I would take another easier gen ed class.
Lots of weekly quizzes based off of reading. The assignments are pretty repetitive and there are a lot of them but they aren't too hard. The professor is very nice and willing to open tests early to accommodate schedule issues!
Took this class online, and it was so easy. I never really interacted with the professor much at all. There are a few assignments to do every couple of weeks but they are really easy to complete. There are a few more effort-full assignments throughout the semester like a few short essays, but theyre not bad at all. Its hard to not do well.
This professor is terrible. Like many people have said, a 1010 class should not be this hard, especially for a gen ed class. This is insane. There's so much homework and crazy expectations. I def do not recommend this class whatsoever.
This class is fairly easy, but I have a background in music and wouldn't recommend it unless you do too. There's a lot of information you have to learn about music history so if you're just trying to get an easy credit I wouldn't take this class. Lots of quizzes every week plus inquisitive. Good for a summer course but not for fall or spring.
one of the best teachers ive had. though theres homework due each week u have unlimited attempts and can find answers easily. same each week so you know what to do. took two classes with this teacher and would recommend to anyone for gen eds. always willing to make accomodations if something happens in your life and is so understanding.
There are lots of quizzes but you have unlimited retakes so it's no stress. There are three exams, collectively worth half of your grade. There are study guides made for each of these with precisely what will be on the exam. There are also three short essays, two concert reports, and one term paper, all of which are very easy.
Lengthy class with a dry textbook. Mostly a self-taught class, but structured in a way that's manageable for sure. Easy credit so long as you study a bit.
Easy class for those who have experience with musical instruments. Mostly self-taught, but her videos are very helpful. Fun composition projects as well. Would recommend it, especially if you play an instrument or are interested in composition.
Wouldn't recommend taking this class as an elective. If you don't have prior music experience, get ready to put in some real hours. Not the easy A I was expecting.
Very easy and the course does teach you some stuff about music theory. The program that they used for quizzes and assignments I did not like because you had to drag and drop.
Unit tests -heavily graded, proctored (3 x 100 pts each) comprehensive; small assignments (5-10 pts each). The instructor is knowledgeable, caring, but a little long-winded. We studied country by country rather than comparing instruments/music across the globe - would have been more helpful. Study guides: time-consuming so do while reading text.
The online course allowed you to do assignments and quizzes as often as you wanted before the due date, so getting a 100% on everything is easy. The exams you can only take once, so it's best you understand the material before taking them, but they weren't too difficult.
Professor Clayton was a decent professor. Her lectures and assignments were clear, but since this was an online class, it wasn't ideal to have proctored exams with such heavy content.
Dr. Clayton is very caring and enthusiastic about world music. Exams are 50 questions with mostly multiple choice questions. Her exam review guides will be the most important resource for an easy A. There are a few papers; however, they're easy to complete. Discussion and quizzes take 20 minutes max. Easy class for IR and FF requirements.
Got on the zooms maybe the first 3-ish weeks until I just stopped altogether- they were pretty boring to me so I kept falling asleep. Quiz answers can be found online so you only really need to read if there's a paper due, which are not very often and very easy to BS. Professor is very, very sweet tho and obviously passionate about the subject.
Her classes are very boring and she thinks students taking the class are all music majors hence teaches that way but I think it would be better if she taught it in the way of a gen ed.
I think Prof. Clayton does a really good job at communicating very well with her students. If you end up missing a day, she'll zoom her lectures so you don't get behind on anything. She's also very flexible at giving you a make up day if you miss an exam and will let you redo assignments if necessary.
Prof. Clayton is a good and kind professor, I just do not find the material that interesting. Class is graded on a few < 30 minute discussion posts, 3 short papers, and 3 exams. Attendance is not mandatory and generally this class is super easy, just study for the test with the terms she provides and read the short textbook chapters. Easy class.
Nice lady, class isn't that hard, but the workload is not entry level and it can get really time consuming if you let it. You'll have a minimum of 4 assignments a week, sometimes double that. They aren't hard but they also don't prepare you for the close-note exams. Not a gen-ed I would recommend trying to squeeze in during a heavier semester.
Overall, the class isn't that bad, and there are far worse professors out there. Dr. Clayton is very nice, she's open to questions, etc. The class is just very dry. I don't know whether to fault her or the textbook, but the class treats world music like the questionable textbook in Dead Poets Society treats Shakespeare. It's an easy IR/FF gen tho.
Ms. Clayton is not a bad professor by any means but also not a fantastic one. The class doesn't do her any favors as it is typically very dry but the material was a little boring, the teaching was a little boring, but the class wasn't hard.
She is really sweet and accessible. The stuff I had the hardest times with were the tests, they were closed book and would rely on super-specific facts that are hard to recall off the top of your head. The weekly quizzes were tedious but you can retake them with no point reduction. The papers were fairly simple to, she is a very forgiving grader
Overall, it is not a hard class, but just the tests are annoying. Closed book, proctored, which is frustrating but not too bad.
I took MUSC 1250 online, and the teacher is fantastic. The class was tough at first for a 1000-level course, with easy assignments but hard tests. After we gave her feedback during the semester, she posted review zoom recordings for the tests and made the last two tests easier. Overall, I'd recommend the class now that the difficulty was improved.
(previously 3600) I ended up finding this class extremely interesting despite my initial hesitancy! Assignments included chapter quizzes, a couple papers, some discussion posts and 3 tests all of which were fairly easy if you show up to class. Tests were a little difficult but very easy if you consistently go to class and prepare beforehand.
Expectations are laid out clearly and tests are very memorization-heavy. Lectures are quite boring, Dr. Clayton tends to ramble, and due to the nature of the class and her teaching style, none of the topics within World Music are discussed in the depth they deserve.
The class was ok, but lectures were very repetitive and not super easy to understand. Kind of disorganized, and completely based on memorization. Study guides and exam prep was good though. Probably wouldn't take again, but wasn't bad.
Took intro to music theory online. Was simple enough, just about what I expected from an online course in that it was not too engaging or difficult.
This class was very easy as someone who's played piano for most of my life. Literally did half the course in the first week. All you have to do is try your best and complete the participation stuff. The tests had unlimited retakes, except for the final, which was open note. Piece of cake and easy A, I never saw profs face the entire semester.
The class itself is really dry, but that's mainly the textbook's fault. For her part, her lecture videos were actually rather informative, and helped clarify the textbook content and boil things down to the important concepts. She's a really nice person, and she's passionate about the subject.
This class is very easy. The tests are all memorization, but if you just do the reviews you should be able to to get above 90%. She's very generous grading papers so just do all of the assignments and an A is gaurenteed.
Cathryn is a good professor. The class itself isn't too hard besides the 3 exams.
Dr Clayton really cares about her students and is passionate about music. The class was overall easy, but exams are a LOT of memorization and niche knowledge. The hour review videos never cover everything on the test, and neither do the documents. There are no real lectures; videos are eclectic. Cheat sheets were LONG and still didn't cover it!
