not for the faint of heart
if you like to write papers then this is your class. write 3 thesis papers.
bases most of grade on final paper then dicks you.
very picky on papers
No Comments
2 5-7pg and 1 8-10pg papers, picky grader, go in and talk to her!!
she's a witch! about 10 essay! tough grader! barely got a B- and I did A work
No Comments
she goes off on tangents
tough class, but a great teacher

I hated this class with a passion. Was not worth my time.

she grabs attention; all topics are relative to average student interests
24 paragraph final essay. Lots of essays but she is an easy grader
She sucked. Very hard, not helpful at all. Extremely boring class.
very hard grader, get on her good side and the class gets easier
grades very hard. not very clear and boring
DO NOT GET HER!!!!
she writes text books for fun...enough said

very nice and helpful. is very articulate so you are able to understand
RUN out of this class, SHE is horrible, Very hard grader and VERY unfair
Very easy grader, I got A's on every single essay
She is crazy! She makes MLA very difficult! Will flunk A students!
Not easy for dumb state kids. She's an oldie but goodie, yes please!
You will HATE MLA
No Comments
she makes you write only 3 essays but is very unclear about what she wants them to be like. you will hate mla and her by the end of the semester
After this semester I am glad to be one with writing...It's atrip how she can look at someone and like stare for days! The first day of class I thought she had split personalities...

IF YOU DON'T KNOW MLA...DON'T TAKE THE CLASS
Not bad. Makes the class seem harder than it is. Make sure you talk to her. HAVE TO TALK TO HER!
Best teacher I've ever had. She requires that you work hard, but the benefits are wonderful. She's interested in her students as people and will do anything to help if you make an effort. her quirkiness is refreshing and entertaining. Definitely recommend
I got A's on all the papers. She's willing to look at your rough drafts and edit. Class is a little boring to sit through at times. And for those of you who are whining about the MLA, it's right there in the book! Just copy it!!!
If you dont agree with her,you won't get a good grade. She thinks she knows everything about everything and expects students to think exactly the way she does even tho she says otherwise
Don't take her!!..i wrote a great 15 page paper and she didn't even read it! she gave me a D bec i got a couple of the citations wrong! she's a know it all.. a witch..
Hard teacher. Writes her own books. Requires and expects a lot. Write exactly what she does and you'll be fine. No room for your own thoughts.
Expects a lot and pulls out the best from you. Wants essays PERFECT! Nice outside of class but intense in classroom. If you want to learn, take her... if you want an easy A, take someone else. She writes her own books... enough said.
Class can be long and repetitive. Grades on executions of precise expectations. If you do what she tells you, you'll be fine. Go to office hours.
She's really easy if you follow exactly what she wants. She completely improved my writing learned more from her then any other writing teacher, take it if you want to learn something

She lectures on and on, but wants to motivate her students. She care about their progresses. Be sure to follow all her directions in writing the essays. 5 essays and one report in the end. It's not too bad when you get used to it.
This woman is awful!! She loves to hear herself talk and never shuts up. Try asking a question and your crazy. Good ideas but extremely poor execution. Not an easy A...she's a pain.
she is a very good teacher. there are 2 7 page essays and 1 ten page one but she is very informative and will work around your schedule if you want to visit her during office hours. she is kinda hard but thats rws 200 for ya. i liked her...
Horrible...everything said is exactly true!!!Likes to listen to herself...expects things perfect...and doesnt execute the ideas in the right manor. I wish that I woulld have gotten out while I could!!!
HAHAHA you got her omg your done for. She teaches the class like it is RWS 1000. She is the hardest teacher in the English Department. I barely escaped with a C
difficult class, she expects perfection from students and has a sructured format for writing, which does not leave much room for student ideas. very persnickity about mla, wants everything "grammar kosher". GO TO OFFICE HOURS, she will help yo
She is very intelligent and the assignments aside the essays are easy, but she grades sooo hard on the essays. Favortism maybe?... make sure you dress cute. Class is extremely boring and attendance effects grades.
Grading is terrible. Wrote a 15 page paper and got a C- for one wrong citation on an A paper. Class is boring. go to office hours if you take this course but DO NOT take her if you don't have to.
Worst teacher! She grades totally at random and takes whatever points she feels like away from a missed comma or quote.
Everyone complains that she is too hard cause she writes her own books. Wrong. The only hard part was lugging the thing to class and next year it should be alot smaller. She gave us a total of 8 paper to due most of which were pretty easy and she has a final paper for you to do instead of a test.
a boat load of writing. if you like to write, take her. if not... run. she explains things pretty well, but grades tough
Very neurotic and anal, grades very hard, loves to hear herself talk
i think anyone who says she was hard is crazy. i wrote longer, harder essays in high school. a lot more than 6. i like how she doesnt require stupid essays like analyzing stories. she allows you to think. great class.
It's an English people...how exciting can it be in the first place...in my opinion it was very stress-free because you can act like you are awake and class and just not pay attention because she doesn't really teach anything that important...if you cram before one of the 6 essays...u'll be fine...
6 essays which is a lot compared to most rws 100 classes. you really have to do the research but the essay topics are fairly easy. her classes are repetivite and boring but she really wants to help her students. Go to her office hours to get help! I did and got an A
I honestly thought she was an awesome professor. Most of the students in my 100 class planned on taking her 200 class also. She is very difficult, but you will actually learn how to write in her class. Very intimidating though, and rather anal, but I repect her a lot. Great professor.
This class was pretty easy. She's a great teacher and loves to help you out. If you think out, plan and revise ur paper like you should... you should do good. Dont leave papers to last minute, or u miss stuff that she HAS TO HAVE. I Loved it... and i learned a lot.
this chick is mental, any mistake and you will feel the wrath of Satan. If you don't know MLA kill your self becuase you have no hope, or at least thats how I felt.
If you can take someone, do so. But, if you have to, make sure you go to her office hours for help. She knows MLA as if she wrote the book, and expects your papers to be MLA perfect. Your definitely going to learn how to write a research paper, but if might be at the expense of a hernia
I liked this teacher. She's very methodical, she does like MLA (you HAVE to get the citations right) but you will learn how to write a research paper with her. Her method is clear and fairly easy to get used to. Attending office hours before a paper is due is a must. She can be very helpful.
She is pretty nice and fairly easy, but she thinks she is gods gift to the english language and sort of makes you want to poke your eyes out
You must know MLA form well but she really outlines everything for you and the book will help you out too. She made class interesting and the essay subjects were easy to write about. She's very helpful and a nice lady. Good class overall.

It is not an easy class but you learn a lot. She does give you a lot of homework. Just make sure to do all in time and don't wait for last minute. Keep up to her schedule. It's a good class if your struggling with writing. She might sound strict but she's pretty nice once you meet her out of class.

Is this the professor I think it is? She grades really hard. She's crazy anal. I tried visiting office hours when she said she'd be there; she wasn't there. Then when I went back again she got mad because she'd "been there all day."
She's a witch and a half!!! She grades too hard and is seriously crazy! Don't take her. You'll be lucky if you pass with a C- in her class. She will definitely give you a D if you get a citation wrong so, make sure you don't. Just make sure your paper is perfect and maybe just maybe you'll get a B-.
Ridiculously unhelpful- very unclear about what she expects until after you have gotten your failing grade- is such a control freak that she talks so fast trying to fit everything in, she doesn't explain or teach half of what she should
I had Miss Hoffman 2 yrs ago & I got a B+. She's the one who got me in the POLITICAL SCIENCE major.
Like Marvelyn Rowe Bucky, She is the greatest professor and I really enjoyed her. Thanks to her, she made me changed my major from Business to Political Science.
Hated her! She grades unfairly, moves too quickly, and gets mad when you don't understand her unclear instructions! If you're apathetic towards English, she'll make you hate it! Don't take her!
This teacher is way anal. There's a paper almost every two weeks, but she doesn't really prepare you to start writing it until about 2-4 days before it's due. She definitely knows what she's talking about, even though it's hard to get what she's saying. She's really intense. I guess she talks with a passion.. but way intense. It's kinda funny hahaa
Once you see she's a hard grader, you'll wish you can change your major. I did, POITICAL SCIENCE
I sat in on one of her classes this week. She's nuts. Clearly a control freak. I'm definetly dropping her class. I don't recommend her unless you want a military, controlling mother type teacher. Not me. I'm too old for that . definetly NOT HOT
She's like your mom: she's a pain in the rear, but means well and will challenge you. This class isn't for everyone, but if you can deal with her, you'll lean alot. 5/6 papers..last week, no classes. Oh, and she only gives A's and C's or D's-- no B's. Weird.
LOVES to listen to herself talk. Thinks she knows everything and leaves NO creative leway. Definately makes me hate writing and I'm a journalism major. Has favorites and I am one and I still hate the class. she's tough too...
My first essay grade was a D+, which is failing in her class. She made me realize I needed to actually try. My second was a B- and my final paper was an A. She went out of her way to help me learn and she really pushed me. I didnt like her at first, but she ended up being my fav.profes.Take her if you are willing to work, not if u want an easy ride
I had her 3 yrs ago & I'll never forget the KOSHER RULE & the fact on how she made me reflect on ALL MY ESSAYS w/the most important reserch. Thanks to her, my major is SOCIOLOGY.
She's EVIL!! Don't take her!! She grades too hard for a lower division class. Also, never be late and always turn in your paper on time!! I was late once when papers were due and she almost didn't take my paper that I spent billions of hours working on! If you do have to take her, good luck...you're gonna need it!

If you do what she asks you'll do great. She gives you an outline of EXACTLY what she wants. Show up to class and pretend to care and she'll really like you.
i actually like hoffman. she can be really mean sometimes but she means well. she pushes you to be the best in writing. you'll learn a lot from her, specifically mla format, oh you'll be glued to that. don't take it if you're not willing to work!
she is a little crazy..but she tells you EXACTLY what she wants (which does kinda suck cuz you have no creative ideas of your own) but you can do well that way.
bombed first essay, but do EXACTLY what she wants in structure and you'll do ok. but i dont recommend her
Horrible.
if you want to learn how to write... then Hoffman is the right prof. she pushes hard but she is kind hearted and wants to get the best out of you. listen to her instructions and follow her guides... if you do then you will be fine, got an A- in the class..
Take this class if you think you can suck up, because if you dont laugh at every joke and love her to death your grade will suffer.
She's very intimidating at first, but once you know the material you realize that she just knows what she's talking about. She grades hard, but teaches well. As long as you follow her rules you'll do just fine. She even raised my grade a little at the end because she knew I put in a lot of effort into my final paper. She's great!
Taught me how to write professionally and easy to understand. Start papers when assigned b/c she has HIGH expectations. I was not a good writer in HS, but got A's on all papers in her class. Be sure to make yourself known in her class and she'll love you. VERY NICE AND VERY EXCELLENT PROFESSOR! Wrote 3 papers only, 2 quizzes, read 1 book.
If you want to learn how to write correctly, this is your professor. She wrote the book so she knows her stuff. She is hard at first, but if you stick with her, she gets better and attendance is mandatory.
do not take her specially if its your first semester. I constantly got the right answer in class and she still talked down to me. she makes you feel stupid. her assignments are ridiculously difficult and long. dont take her but if you do prepare to put in a lot of hours and work and do the things the way she wants not in any way that interests you
This professor is very nice and helpful. She does expect a lot from her students but you will learn how to write correctly. I was an okay writer going into the class and I got As and Bs on my papers. She explains what she is looking for in the papers and as long as you have everything, you will get a good grade.
Very friendly, but vapid. I lost all faith in what she said when she mentioned "czechoslovakia" .. ummm, its been the Czech Republic since the 90s.
Her standards are "unreachably" high so that it's standard that most of the class fails, and she is completely self obsorbed, believing that her way is perfect and the only way
She is a Funny southern lady who has funny sayings and keeps you interested. She tells you exactly what she wants from you and doesn't stray from the syllabus. 5 big assignments determine your grade: 3 papers and 1 test and novel test. If you want to learn how to write a research paper take her class.
Really intense class to say the least. Attendance mandatory, if you don't go you'll get on her bad side! Honestly just take notes and do everything she tells you to and you'll get an easy A. I did for sure. She's not as tough as everyone says she is. If you can take directions and write at all, you'll be fine.
This is a good teacher, but a very hard grader. She tells you exactly what she wants and how she wants it. She cares tremendously about her students. She lectures a lot at the beg. of the semester, and confrences towards the end instead. If you want to learn MLA, and how to write, then take this class, but be prepared to work CRAZY hard.
This class is not easy but you'll definitely learn a lot. Hoffman might seem intimidating at first but once you get to know her she's really nice. Her essays are not easy but if you follow exactly her directions you'll do good. MLA!! She does a lot of conferences with her students which really help. Just follow her directions and don't miss class!
umm shes ridiculous. she is so cocky and obsessed with talking about her kids its hard not to laugh the whole time because of her funny sayings and how hard she tries to use big words when shes talking
She cares a lot about MLA, its her world. If you turn in your paper after the beginning of class she wont accept it. This class was a horrible experience. I dont recommend her, especially if your not excited about writing!
This lady is very unclear. She expects a lot! I spent hours in the library dong anything and everything possible but she just did not like me. Do not take this class unless it is a last resort. She has favorites and I was not one of them!
I went to class everyday, got A's in all the assignments apart from the three research papers and fell short of a C+ because my essays didn't improve. Besides the fact that she takes herself too seriously, she did express exactly what she wanted in each paper. Don't take this class if you're not willing to start on essays way in advance.
Although the first couple classes you will be tempted to drop because she seems difficult and wierd, dont do it. I actually really enjoyed her class because of her funny sayings and how into herself she was. If you improve from your first to third papers its an automatic B and surprisingly i learned a lot
She' ridiculous... unless you are super into writing 25 page long papers... then DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS! Go to class and dont be late to conferences..she's anal about tardiness. Super hard grader. Nice teacher if you are nice to her. Cares for her students and is obsessed with MLA. She also goes against what the book teaches sometimes. LAME!
Number 1: Proffessor Hoffman is a self-proclaimed difficult teacher...Number 2: She is my favorite teacher ever. She is a true scholar and teaches to TEACH, not pass you along college. The only way to get an A in her class is to follow her instructions to the T but the end result is so rewarding that you will thank her later for pushing you. =)
Did not care for Hoffman at all. She's very opinionated and biased. She barely explains the papers, especially the final paper. When writing your essays, you have to follow her format exactly, which tends to make very little sense.
EXCELLENT PROFESSOR! Her class is difficult, you must attend each class, and you must follow her instructions exactly. But she explains and prepares you perfectly for each paper. YOU WILL LEARN A LOT!!
She is quite intimidating at first but honestly, if you listen to her she will tell you exactly what she wants. If you do it, you are going to get an A. She is a bit of an MLA nazi but she will help improve your writing 100%. If you're willing to put in the work I HIGHLY recommend her, especially if you are interested in graduate school.
She tells everyone that they are going to fail the first essay, about 70 percent did. The essays are extremely long and theres an exorbanent amount of reading. If you do what she asks then you have a possibility of getting an A. She doesnt really like if you ask questions in class, she'll interupt you several times. Shes very into herself.
Knows what she's talking about, good office hours/ conferences, not a lot of classes due to conferences
This is a tough class. If you don't have an interest in writing research papers, this class is not for you. Three Papers, one final exam (on a book). Those are the major grade-makers. If you want to improve your writing skills, she's the one. I got an A, but with lots of hard work and time spent. If you just want an easy A, don't take this class.
Mrs. Hoffman is a smart lady, therefore she expects a lot from her students. Her class if definitely difficult ... you have to write four papers (three of which are big), read a 300 page book, and do other readings as well. If you don't know MLA really well she'll take off a ton of points. You learn how to write a good paper but its a hard class.
great teacher! really into herself and her kids. has a weird way of speaking, says little annoying things, you'll hear them. I learned a lot though! A LOT of research. not an easy A class but if you want to challenge yourself, take it. Well worth it!
EXCELLENT professor. Go to EVERY SINGLE lecture and show up ON TIME; you can't afford to miss anything. She tells you exactly what she wants in each paper, so take good notes and follow instructions!! I was afraid to take Hoffman from what I read in other reviews, but I highly recommend her class if you want to learn how to write. I *earned* an A.
Hard to understand when she explains things.
Write 6 essays ~ 5 are 3-5 pgs, final is about 10 pgs long. Not great office hours, so catch her after class. Recommend sticking around after class to hear other people questions; it might help you out. Very smart and respectable woman. FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS, you will do fine and learn a lot. Buy the textbooks, need them when writing papers.
If you love to learn and work hard then go for it, but if you're like me and could careless about the class and just want a good grade and are just taking it because its mandatory then run far far away because if i can remeber correctly mrs. hoffman states that "If you are not struggling than you aren't learning." Most people don't like to struggle
Heinous! If you are a procrastinator like me she'll torture you with her essays. I was like "whaaat the....?" half the time but I got a B in the class sooooo uhhhh idk how that works :P She told me I improved a lot so i guess her teachings work but yeah I still don't like her.
Hoffman was awesome..but insane. Major eye candy though. Her class is extremely difficult, unless you enjoy writing, which I'm sure no one does. 3 long research papers (which I like to call stupid, stupid, and stupid), an exam on a novel, and an easy A presentation. When she says research, she wants research. That's the hard part. Do not recommend.
Okay, lets just be honest. She is one hell of a teacher. It is not an easy class guys. I pulled off an A- by sleeping over at state. You have a total of 14 grades. She can break that down for you but basically you have 3 MAJOR LONG research papers, 2 essay exams, some quizzes, and projects. Other than that, shes a great professor to learn from [:
Hoffman pushed me to become a better writer. She is ABSOLUTELY clear about what she wants in each essay and is VERY organized. Her essays are long and tedious and this is DEFINITLY not a class you can procrastinate in. My final paper was 15 pgs long and finished in one night. I aced the class. NOT an easy A whatsoever!
Great Professor. Real Black and White in her class, if you do what she tells you to, you'll have NO PROBLEM! She's awesome, if you need help, you have to ask. The ones who don't like her obviously don't follow directions well. If you listen, pay attention and do what she says, you will be just fine. Lots of work!
She WANTS you to be on time..Sometimes starts the class 5 min early, and ends a couple mins late. If you're a min or two late to class, she tells you try to be on time. Class has 3 big essays, one short presentation, a book exam, and other small assignments. Hard class, you got to start on things early. She also does not use e-mail or blackboard.
Hoffman absolutely terrified me the first few classes. I am an english major, and passed my AP's, but I still felt like it would be close to impossible to pass. She is very intimidating, but it's really for the best. VERY ARDUOUS class but I can definitely say I'm a better writer now than I was before. She has favorites!
Very intimidating at first, but as the class progresses you can see that all she wants is for her students to do well. You will need 3 books for her class. Easy class because she explains exactly what she wants down to the last detail, but lots of work. Overall a very good teacher and an even nicer person, recommended!
Pretty intense class, but I learned A LOT... I did exactly what she asked for and followed the sample essays, which help A LOT, and got an A. Would recommend her to anyone that wants to learn MLA by heart and hear her say the same quotes every class
She is INSANE. I learned a lot about writing and thought I did well in the class. But she doesnt use blackboard so I never really knew my grade. Turns out I got a C- and I can't email her to find out why because she refused to give out her email. Either way, only take her if you have a bunch of time to waste on a low level course.
Very Hard, & not so clear. DO NOT miss class or she will really get on you & your grade will drop. The essays were pretty hard and she's a very tough grader. If you don't pass the last paper you fail the class, no questions asked. Very Intense class. Try to find a different teacher to take. My advice: pass the WPA, try not to have to take RWS 305W!
She makes my life a nightmare. This class is so hard. She treats everyone like there grad writing students. She grades on what she teaches, however 75% of her class time is spent talking about herself and her children. She will make you learn the mla and the criteria, becasue if you don't she WILL fail you. Its intense.
HARD, HARD, HARD! But I did learn alot. She tells you exactly what she wants and you better do it if you want to pass.
Mrs. Hoffman makes you work! But she's also very inspiring and gives you a lot of direction for the way she wants papers to look like. I would say take this class if you like a challenge and really want a professor who cares about how you're doing within the course.
To describe the class in a nutshell: HARD, CONFUSING, and at times boring. she's a very hard grader, she can be very misleading with outlines. Other than that, shes a caring and helpful teacher, but this isnt a class for anyone lazy.if you're looking for an easy writing class dont take this one. You're writing will improve, but so will your stress
Cathy is tough and demanding. However I did learn A LOT from her. She goes into depth with her assignments (5 papers). Follow the criteria and you should be okay. She also makes students buy the textbook she wrote...
My first class with her i wanted to drop and crash another course. She is extremely intense and demands a lot from her students. However as long as you follow the requirements and do what she says its easy despite the work. I got A's and B's on all my papers and I hate writing and learned ALOT.
Definitely a tough class, but I learned a lot. She was pretty fair if you put forth an effort and she was always willing to help clarify and help with essays. She really wants students to do well. Just follow exactly what she says and its not too difficult to get an A.
Extremely hard class, lectures are very boring, does not go over instructions for papers clearly. Got A's and B's on 4/5 papers and on last one got a D so I got a D+ for the class. Avoid at all costs unless you are a really good writer.
Oh, Professor Hoffman. She is a very passionate and intense professor who knows her stuff. This class ended up being difficult despite her laying out every essay how she wants it. She explains the essays in class but doesn't get near specific enough in my opinion. Go to her office hours if you want a shot at getting an A.
I always thought I was great in English, but Hoffman's class kicked my butt. That being said, if you work hard and pay attention, you're going to learn so much! She's an amazing teacher who really cares about her students. She does tons of conferences so a lot of times, you don't have to go to class, just a one on one with her. Take her and learn!
The first day she claimed to be the hardest grading English professor at the school boasting her Ph.D degree and what not. But honestly, its all a scare. I received A-/B's on all the papers except for the last one, im not sure what I received on it because I didn't go to her office hours. I still got a B in the class tho!! Take her if you wanna act
Shes a very demanding teacher. She can come off as being mean but shes just passionate about english. Its a hard class but fair. If you want to learn shes the perfect professor. I learned so much in this class it surprised me
TOugh teacher hard to take notes. interesteing topics to write on but the articles and journal finding is very time consuming
Very tough teacher but very rewarding teaching. She is very passionate about the subject and encourages her students as well as helps them. If you want to be a better writer, take this class.
She rambles on all the time and never stops talking, whether it has to do with the questions people ask her or her own personal life. She cares a lot about her students even if she can be annoying. Just use exactly what she says in lecture in the papers and she will think you are brilliant. Easy A.
She was the best teacher I had at SDSU, hands down. She is one tough cookie. Her class is a challenge but she was captivating and inspirational. I loved the way she conducted the class.
Professor Hoffman is my absolute favorite teacher from my entire college experience at SDSU. She works hard and expects her students to do the same. She is passionate and dedicated to her craft. If you take her class seriously you will do well. Once again...love her!
I am very glad to have been in Professor Hoffman's class. She is NOT the easiest teacher, but it is definitely doable. She is extremely clear in her requirements of you. Three essays written for the semester, meaning you have 1-1 1/2 months to write each one. She is very passionate about her work, and I would recommend attending every class.
Class seems tough at the start but she goes into detail about what she want. Give her the papers to proper formatting and show up for the days you have class and you should pass! She is very passionate about the class.
Not happy with teacher! Im taking her for RWS and she hasnt taught me anything my teachers in highschool havent. I'm confused/ frustrated. She is angry when you ask question, and her conferences are pointless. They don't help me in understanding what I could do better just all the things that I did wrong. Wished I dropped it.
This women thinks that she has taught her students how to write. If anything leaving this class I am more confused then ever. Everytime I go in and get my grades she has no offical grading rubris so I begin to wonder if she is grading on what she thinks is good or what actually meets the criteria of good. Don't take you will be saving yourself hell
Not an easy class, but very rewarding. Hoffman is truly passionate about writing and it shows. She has high expectations for all of her students. Those who struggle with writing might find this class to be extremely frustrating, but those who have a passion for it.. you won't be disappointed!
If you want to write 10 page essays with about 20 sources then take this class. This class took up so much time and was so boring. Hoffman is nice but a tough grader
So far, she scares me. She thinks she's the best writer and teacher for it, but really, she's just egotistical. Expects us to write at graduate level, and talks about the same thing, MLA. I'm just hoping a pass with a C, at least.
I just finished her course. She claims to be a hard professor and whatnot. She did not challenge me at all. I did the least amount of work I could to get through this class. I can write essays as fast as I can spit. I have been published and I thought her class could use improvements. Interesting character, but just a busywork class.
Before taking this class I was terrified by the comments, but in reality if you actually do what she says and put in a good amount of time you will be fine. I am an average writer and with some hardwork i actually ended up with an A in class,i was so freakn excited! You definetly need the book so be ready to reference her a lot :)
I started all the essays the night before they were due. Its possible to do well but I definitely wouldn't recommend her. She makes you do three to four times the work of the other RWS200 teachers and doesn't give much guidance for improvement. Nice person, but ridiculous demands and tangents for a teacher. Stay away if possible
She's a great teacher, smart, and definitely has the passion for the job, but honestly she gives way to much work and her expectations are way too high. The class is pretty much 3 2000 word essays that need atleast 20 sources. It's hard to write, but I can't begin to imagine how she grades it all. She'd be perfect if her workload was cut in half.
If you enjoy writing research papers that require (IF YOU WANT AN A) 45 sources and a minimum of 10 pages, then take this lovely class. Warning: it may require long hours of research (MUST BE SUPER LEGIT AND ACADEMIC RECENT SOURCES) Also it may take hours to get the format perfect (b/c thats what Hoffman wants).
Prof. Hoffman is a really intelligent person that knows what she's talking about. This class is challenging, but it's nothing that anyone can't do if they don't procrastinate. There's three research reports and one final based on a book reading. Papers require at least 20 sources to be up to her MINIMUM standards. You definitely learn in this class
Every single day in class was pretty much the same, but she drilled MLA into our heads. I got good grades on my papers and I wrote them all the day before or the day that they were due. Had to use academic journals as sources. A lot of assigned textbook reading, but you only need to read the novel for which you have to write an in-class essay.
Cathy is amazing! She will kick your butt like a great coach, but in the end, you will be a much better writer for it. I had her for my sophomore year, then went to UC Berkeley and many of my instructors asked me who I had for a critical writing instructor because they were floored by how much better I was prepared than my fellow classmates.
Professor Hoffman is an amazing, very inteligent lady. The course may be intimidating at first but if you do what she asks you'll be fine. She is very big on MLA and research papers, but, gives you tons of help and resources for it. In the end you'll be a better writer because of her.
Professor Hoffman is a lovely lady and these reviews don't do her justice. She is a brilliant woman and her class is indeed a bit challenging but if you do as she says and fulfill the requirements she gives of the papers you will do just fine.
Professor Hoffman runs a tight ship with high expectations; however, her instructions are very clear and she is always willing to help her students. Do not be intimidated by lengthly papers and high vocabulary- more than enough time is given for each of the three essays. The most important aspect of this class is: you will leave as a better writer.
She is really nice and passionate about what she is doing. If you care about your grade and are attentive she is there to help. However, DO NOT take her if English is not your best subject. You have few chances to make up and your only real help is writing center. Definitely not an easy A.
Professor Hoffman is VERY specific on what she wants in her essays, down to how many paragraphs and what to include, and if you don't follow her requirements she'll dock you big time. She VERY big on MLA and citing sources, each essay will easily have 30. Be ready to do a lot of research on every essay (3) you write. You'll have to work for an A.
She is a very tough grader and makes you work for it no doubt, but its all worth it in the end. If you want to improve your writing this is the class for you. SO glad I took this class. Be prepared to work but trust me it all will help you for the better. No tests and about 5 papers.
Amazing teacher! One of the best professors I have had. She is extremely specific with what she is looking for, pays attention to detail and correct MLA format. It's a challenging class but I would definitely recommend her.
One of the best professors in SDSU. Although she is a tough grader but she is very nice and explains well for every required paper. She really inspired me and helped me in improving my writing. Would recommend her and would take her again.
This lady i have deep respect for. Yes her class wasn't easy, however she truly made me a better writer. She is so helpful and I worked very hard. This class will not be an easy A, you have to work for it. But when you do, she sees that. The first teacher who I actually felt wanted to help me personally as a writer.
If you follow exactly as she says you will do well in this class. Just follow her directions EXACTLY. Long papers with a lot of sources, but you will learn how to write. If you are willing to work hard and learn how to write, then take her class. Not an easy A.
Not always the most understanding, sometimes to the point of being irrational. The only thing a computer is good for to her is being a glorified typewriter, she doesn't even give out an email. Ask her a question she'll answering it, but not before she makes you feel stupid for asking it.
I deeply respect professor Hoffman. Although she comes off initially as intimidating she is a super nice person who really will help you a lot. The papers are really long and she is obsessed with MLA, however, she is REALLY specific on what she wants in the papers so if you do that then you will be fine. This is the first English class I've enjoyed
Cathy is one of those teachers who you look back and thank for challenging and pushing to do better than the bare minimum. As long as you really try hard she will recognize that and work with you. She's really picky about citations so learn that fast. She initially came off a bit unapproachable but I promise her office hours are worth it.
Professor Hoffman is a really hard-working and inspirational professor. Although she might seem a bit disorganized during class, her assignments (essays) are well explained and gives good feedback in how to improve your writing after she grades it. Overall take this class since it is easy and an A is guaranteed.
Professor Hoffman tells you exactly what she wants for each paper, but if you do not follow it exactly you probably won't get a passing grade on your paper. Also if any of your MLA is off you will not get a passing grade. There were extremely long and tedious papers in this class. However, they did prepare me for writing real research papers.
Not an easy A class. Makes you work for it, 5 essays. Most of them are 5 to 7 paragraphs. Syllabus is not like other 305W classes. MLA is very important. The hardest part of the essays are that you need to read a lot of scholarly journals. At the end, you do learn a lot from her. Brags about her son EVERY SINGLE CLASS! If you want to learn take her
Prof. Hoffman will assign essays & will REFUSE to help you if you have a question about the assignment. When I asked her a question about my essay, she told me to find help from anyone but her. She does not clarify anything about the assignments. She doesn't explain assignments well but she is a tough grader? The overall grade's based off 5 asgmt.
Prof. Hoffman teaches you how to write. Sure, she can be strict and picky at times, but she knows what she's talking about. She assigns 3 research papers during the semester and she has high expectations for them. The way she organized the class just made sense. I really enjoyed taking her class although it was long and difficult. Get ready to work
Prof. Hoffman is a sweet lady, but will really make you work hard if you want to get a good grade in this class. If I recall correctly, there's 3 or 4 big essays that make a big chunk of your grade and other in class assignments. But, she will teach you how to become a better writer no doubt about that.
Looking for an easy A? Not a fan of coming to class, especially a requirement? RUN! 6 papers, (1 mini oral essay, 2 hefty research papers) all papers are require research, so start early. *as long as you follow her guidelines you'll do fine. Never have met a prof that cared about her students more. If you want to improve your writing-TAKE HER.
This professor is simply mean and rude when you don't follow the exact specifications for each assignment, which aren't always clear. I would never take her class again. Barely passed.
Don't take this class if you aren't prepared to put in a lot of work. I personally am not very strong when it comes to writing, but Professor Hoffman is very helpful when preparing the paper. When class is scheduled you need to go, but many of the classes are cancelled for conferences. Get ready to write long papers with lots of sources!
Professor Hoffman truly cares about your success in the future. She was very specific as to how she wants the essays written so you will get an A if you do exactly what she says. You will learn a lot in this class, but don't take her if you want an easy A because there is A LOT of work.
She is very specific to what she wants. Which can be a good and bad thing. I felt like I did not have any creative freedom in the class to write how I wanted. I do not mean I am an excellent writer, but I have always done fairly well in all my english courses. If you really care about learning how to write research papers she is the teacher for you
listen to what she needs to say, pay attention in class. DO NOT procrastinate and wait to write an essay... it will definitely kill your grade. I recommend to ask for feedback, she will try her best to help you.
Hoffman has been my favorite professor at SDSU. She is extremely straightforward in what she expects from her students and thoroughly describes the quality difference between an A, B, and C paper. As long as you follow the prompt (3 papers) and take notes in class, you will get at least a B. GO TO OFFICE HOURS, they really make a difference.
One of the easiest classes iv taken. Just listen and do what she says and you will get an A. Try to make it a habit of going into office hours before a paper is due so she can give you feedback and see you are trying your best and it will REALLY help your grade too.
Pretty easy, got an A. Handful of quick essays that are reading and lecture based. As long as you go to class, and do what she says on the assignments, you'll get an A. Go to office hours and ask Q's, she will see that you care and grade better if you show you care and are putting in effort.
Hoffman is an interesting professor. She requires attendance but doesn't give much useful information during her lectures plus they are very boring. She is very full of herself and often talks about how smart she is. Her papers require a lot of work and time, don't procrastinate.
If you love writing long extensive in depth papers take this class. She is a hard grader and if you don't write what she wants to hear you will not get a good grade. I've heard from other students that their RWS200 classes aren't as hard as Hoffman's. There are so many writing assignments and her instructions are never clear. She doesn't use email
really great professor, my favorite so far. she's been the only prof to push me to do the best i can. she tells you exactly what she wants in each paper if you listen. take notes and record as many lectures as you can. don't procrastinate. the writing is not creative, it's an academic writing class and it will help you later on. GO TO OFFICE HOURS.
Professor Hoffman can come off as quite intimidating and intense , however she is very caring and wants to see everyone succeed. She lectures often, which is nice because she will go over exactly what she expects to see in your essays and exactly what not to do. We also had a writing fellow in our class who was very helpful.
Please do yourself a favor and don't take her. I love writing and I read her reviews thinking i would be able to gain more knowledge. I learned absolutely nothing. And she loves to brag. There were 3 essays and each was with at least 15 sources with at least 16 pages (My largest was 28 pages). Every other teacher gave the most of about 7 pages.
I'm not going to lie: her class was difficult. However, she 's a great lady and an excellent professor. She's very caring and methodical, so you'll know exactly what's needed to do well on her essays (5 of them). Do attend her office hours!! She's super helpful and less intimidating one on one. My writing improved immensely. Class is worth it
Take her class! I was hesitant about taking it when I saw these reviews last year, but I improved drastically in writing in such a short period of time. I'm not going to lie, her class does entail some work. She wants to challenge her students to the best of her ability, but taking her RWS 200 course fully prepared me for my entire college career.
I took Hoffman for RWS200 and had friends in her 100 class, too. In all honesty there are far better and easier teachers you can take for either class. I didn't write a single essay less than 10 pages and my final paper was 27 pages which was ridiculous. She also grades tough and puts nothing in blackboard so you won't know your grade until the end
I liked her. Hoffman challenges and pushes her students to reach their full potential, which not all professors take the time to do. Take notes, and always record her lectures. She does not grade easily, so if you're looking for an easy A, don't bother enrolling in her class. It's an academic class, not a creative writing class. Go to office hours!
Hands down the best professor I have ever had. Her class is tough and requires multiple long papers. If you want an easy class do not take her, but if you genuinely want to improve your writing, there is no better professor. If you put in the work your writing will improve drastically.
Do not take Professor Hoffman if you're simply looking to fulfill a GE requirement. She is a great professor and clearly she knows what she's doing, but I regret taking her class. I am a science major and there is nothing I hate more than writing essays. This class is way too intense for a 200 level class and the essays requirements are ridiculous.
Hoffman expects a lot out of you as a student, but is very clear in what she expects. Highly recommend taking this class if you want to become a better writer. I was already a fairly strong writer before taking her class and in one semester alone I improved drastically. Do not be discouraged of taking her.
Professor Hoffman is a great teacher. She clearly cares about her students and the subject matter. Take this class if you like writing and want to become a better writer. Go to office hours! She is accessible and highly encourages office hour attendance. She explains in depth what she wants from each essay so take notes and attend class.
Unless you are a superb writer and are unafraid of a tough class, I would suggest not taking Hoffman. It's hard to impress her because she reuses topics from past years for her papers. Get ready to print a lot of pages of articles and essays. Has conferences 15 days of the semester. Will improve your writing, but it will be a struggle.
A little bit confusing in lectures but overall tells you exactly what you need to do in order to succeed. Explains things sufficiently. Intimidating at first but a great teacher.
Hoffman knows what she is talking about and is very "rigorous" as she described herself. 5 papers in all, not the type of essays you can BS in one night and expect a good grade. She's a smart Prof and she wants you to succeed but it comes with a ton of reading and putting time into the papers. Not an easy A.
Professor Hoffman is a rigorous teacher that expects effort and respect out of students. Throughout the semester, it is one paper after the other but through her lectures she explains exactly what she wants, paragraph by paragraph, in the paper. She appreciates when students go to office hours. Took her class randomly and am taking her RWS200 class
Professor Hoffman is kind, but her class is one of the most paper-heavy RWS 200 courses on campus. The only thing you do in this class is write research papers and take an exam on a novel, and none of my papers were shorter than 12 pages, with the longest being 25. Do not take this class if you're looking for an easy, quick GE.
I enjoyed Prof. Hoffman as a person, but as a teacher, she TAUGHT very little. Classes were filled with her mostly telling us WHAT she wanted in her papers rather than HOW we should write them. Expect A LOT of research as she enjoys long works cited pages. DO NOT procrastinate on essays. Five very long essays, one novel exam. Expect to work A LOT.
She's tough and it makes me that much more proud of myself that I passed her class. You don't have as many class lectures when you meet with her one-on-one in conferences (maybe about 5 or 6 times), but she helps you immensely there. She is hard, but a bada** prof who WILL help you improve your writing, even if you don't enjoy English, like me
If you want to learn how to write, Prof. Hoffman is the person who can teach you how to. She lectures about what she wants in her papers but you will be expected to read and write, since obviously this is a writing class. She is super caring and will meet you in person atleast 5 times over the semester to give you feedback on how you can improve.
Definetely a difficult class and much more intensive than other similar courses. However professor Hoffman is brilliant in her teaching and you will become a much better writer by taking her class. Would recommend to anyone seeking to become a stronger student.
5 essays total and each one 7 paragraphs, about 7-9 pages long and about at least a 2 page works cited. grades your papers in front of you in conference and will make you cry. super smart lady and knows what shes talking about but expects way too much from a 100 level class. at least my RWS 200 class seems like a piece of cake in comparison.
Prof. Hoffman, although one of the most difficult professors I've taken, has been one of my favorites. Her essays were long and tough, but improved my writing tremendously. Do not take this class if you are willing to work, but if you want to actually greatly improve your writing, Hoffman is the way to go!
very disappointed!!
Cathy Hoffman will definitely pound the inner writing skills out of you. All of her essays require 25 or more recent and reliable sources, and she grades heavily. Don't take her class if you would have more than 15 units total with it. She does help you out a ton with writing, and you get over 20 days off from classes, so that is a definite plus.
nice, interesting woman with an immense passion for English, essays are terribly confusing, very hard class. go to office hours. class is a lot of work, but she gives mostly As and Bs if you put in all the work
You have 5 papers throughout the semester, all kinds of weird topics and she is very specific about what she wants. take notes on her lectures and if you put in a normal amount of effort you will easily get a B. Don't miss class though.
She is fantastic at teaching you how to write a 10 page research paper, if you're into that. Hardest English class I've ever taken. Each essay is 30-40 scholarly sources as in journals, PhD dissertations, and books with MLA citations typed out. No easy bib! Only recommend for those that need strong writing skills. Do not take for an easy A.
hardest class I've ever taken. There are about five writing assignments throughout the semester with the most random prompts and she expects a lot of detail in writing. Each assignment is around 2,000 words. Instead of teaching in class she goes over how she wants these assignments written and all of the requirements. Easy grader if you do the work
I've never been more terrified of anyone in my life. It was the utter fear of this woman that I was motivated to do well in this class. With that being said, the class grade is based on 3 research papers, 1 novel exam, and 1-on-1 conferences. Hoffman is extremely intimidating because of high expectations, but she will make you a better writer.
if you like her class you're likely a class pet. she does not teach about writing just citations. she only grades on APA format and if you don't have that down she will give you a bad grade. there are multiple lengthy papers. do not take this class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FOR EASY GE. Wrote 4 Papers. A 13 page, a 12 page that required me to print 2 additional copies of an 11 page journal, a 22 page, and a 30 page essay in this class. Probably had to drop 10 dollars for printing total. Take a different RWS200 professor so you can spend more time with friends, clubs, and on your major classes
Cathy Hoffman is an incredible professor, but her class is definitely not easy. The class is based on three research papers and an exam on a novel. She really knows what she is talking about and shows you exactly how to conduct research and organize your findings into a professional paper. She is life goals, a fashion icon, and pretty funny too.
Proff Hoffman knows her stuff. She goes off on tangents sometimes. She will have writing conferences for 4 weeks where you have no class. The papers are long but the grade is mostly about the format and generally having the right idea for the content of the paper.
Professor Hoffman was by far the best professor I have ever had. She will absolutely make you work for your grade, but she genuinely cares about every student. She will make time for you and give you all the information and feedback you need to become a better writer.
One of the worst classes I have ever taken, get ready to write 10-15 page papers with 20-25 academic sources and journals. This is not an easy GE, Hoffman thinks we are all writing Doctoral dissertations and treats us so. Expect to spend 15-30 hours on obnoxiously difficult and particular papers to get a C.
If you are looking for a good RWS teacher she is not the one, especially for a freshman. Everything you do in this class that has a large contribution to your grade you can expect to be locked in a room for at least three days to complete it. She grades you on going to her meetings to get feedback. Completely inconsiderate of the pandemic.
Too many papers and too tough of a grader
I can't tell if she loves or hates me; she is very intimidating. The class is manageable, there aren't TOO many assignments, but there is always something due. You have to read three extra books that other RWS200 students don't have to read. **ALSO don't buy the textbooks you don't need them.
She grades the essays very harshly. She looks at every detail including making sure each work cited citation is correct. She does have conferences and gives feedback. The last paper is extremely long and took me several weeks to do.
Don't even try RUN AWAY. The papers you will be assigned will be ridiculous especially for a freshman. Find another teacher, trust me it will be worth it. Very very very demanding old hag that will work you to the bone with these papers.
As an online class, RWS 200 with Prof. Hoffman was great because there was very little lecture time, and she gave weeks for the papers. Difficult grader, but fair. If you listen to her videos, she tells you exactly what she wants. Not much homework outside of papers, so really give them your all.
Great feedback when discussing past and current essays. 4 essays, 1 trilogy exam. Value and Fact essays will be the most difficult things you've done, but they teach you a lot about good writing and source searching. You develop a lot of skills with her. Definitely recommend although you'll be doing a ton of essay prep and writing.
She teaches her pupils how to write to professional and academic standards. There were two 2k word papers which required a fair bit of research (maybe 10 hours of reading/skimming academic papers each). She is more than willing to help you out in office hours. Once you complete this class, writing will be easy. Also, the novellas were great!
Professor Hoffman is a strict grader. We wrote many essays and for each one we wrote, we never received feedback. We had two conferences, and you have to be on top of those because if you miss one due to wifi problems, she will not care and negotiate. So, be on top of everything. Watch her lectures. Ask for feedback because she won't give you any.
Hoffman is a very strict grader. There are a total of 4 essays, and the Value and Fact essays are the hardest things to do. It doesn't help that after an essay, she doesn't give any feedback, so I had to figure out what I did wrong, which did not help. When writing essays, you have to do it by her standards. Good luck on this class, you'll need it.
She's a really nice person, but HARD grader. Office hours help, very willing to tell you what to do to get an A. Expect to put in hours and hours of work/reading. Detailed grading. You can choose what you want to write your essays on, but she's looking for depth and MANY, MANY (up to 40+) sources. If you put in the work, there's much to learn.
Definitely makes you work for your grade, but she makes her expectations clear during lectures and conferences. Not an easy class, but will make you a better writer by the end. Workload consisted of 4 large essays2000+ words. LARGE emphasis on MLA and properly citing sources. Goes off on tangents during conferences/lectures, but it's funny.
She gives out 5 essays. Shes nice but her class is rigorous so you better prepare yourself. one of my favorite professors, but i wouldnt suggest you take this class if you dont want to be challenged.
Hoffman expects nothing less than a student's best work. Her feedback is amazing as even the littlest mistakes will be brought to light, and that is for good reason. She cares about her students, but most importantly she wants them to succeed. She will change your perspective on what it means to be a good writer.
She is an extremely strict grader so the papers require A LOT of time. u will CONSTANTLY be writing intense research papers. She'll also tell ur class she expects you all to fail certain papers (discouraging!!). Want an extension so u can go to ur grandmas funeral? not gonna happen bc I QUOTE "grandmas die thats what they do" so better suck it up!
Trust me...do not do this to yourself. If your taking other difficult classes, this will literally drown you. I'm taking 17 credits and I have never felt more stress. This teacher and her class will start to become all you think about and you will literally begin to lose your sanity. Don't do it ever. Even if your grandma dies, better be in class..
She is a very bad professor!! Take anyone else but her for RWS 200!! Trust me!!! She is horrible, she grades very tough and provides very little feedback. During her lectures in class, she talks so fast and I was not able to understand and learn anything. DO ANYTHING ELSE BUT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR!!!
Horrible teacher! her criticism was so unclear did not put grades on Canvas unit last minute. overall, crushed all my confidence in my writting. AVOID IF POSSIBLE!
Hoffman is quite possibly the hardest professor I have EVER taken, and that includes upper divisions. She assigns 8-12 page papers with 15-20+ current, academic, peer-reviewed sources that MUST fit her criteria. While my friends were breezing through 3 page analyses for 200, I was ripping my hairs out spending my weekends writing her essays. AVOID.
Hard essays (took weeks to write). A lot of research. Bad feedback from the teacher. Rude to students. Trashy lectures. Dont take RWS 200 with Professor Hoffman! RUN AWAY.
She is a great teacher and you will genuinely learn a lot about writing. However, she has a very specific writing style which is VERY hard to perfect. She does a great job teaching you how to perfect it if you're willing to put in the extra time. Also this is a class you can not miss be at all lectures.
Hoffman was the worst teacher I've ever had. She gave us extremely long, tedious, awful papers to write and expected us to know exactly what to do with very little information. If you miss even one of her classes you will be in big trouble. The essays were excruciating. 10+ page papers with a minimum of like 30 scholarly sources
Overall, this class was difficult. While Hoffman will set you up for the future, it is just far too difficult to be considered a GE class. I have talked to people who say that this is one of the hardest classes at SDSU. You can count on having 25+ page papers and using 40+ academic sources every paper. Take at your own risk.
She is genuine when she wants students to succeed in writing but came off as wrong. It might've been a joke but she stated it did not matter if a loved one passed away or an accident happened--you must attend class! Papers were usually 10 pages with 20-50 academic sources. She grades very sternly too and expects to fail some of your papers.
She was quite the teacher. This was the hardest class I had as a freshman student at SDSU. I felt like my life revolved around her class and writing essays. She is nice to talk to when you go to her conferences, but she is also very strict. Overall, this class was TOUGH, but now, writing is too easy, and I write papers so fast.
This class is very difficult if you do not put in the work. It is mostly writing papers and research. It felt excruciating at the time, but looking back now I really think it helped open my horizons and enrich me academically.
Class is a majority essays which have a strict criteria to follow along with an insane amount of required sources. The entire course is going to be based off of long, source HEAVY essays. Harsh grader that does not take any excuses as to why something may be late. Must have mandatory meetings with her as well before/ after each essay.
Prof. Hoffman is very intimidating but she clearly defines what she wants and how she wants it and even gives examples. If you follow the guide she gives you then you should be fine but the essays were long and very tedious work.
This class was just the death of me. You will pass if you put in the work but there is SO MUCH work. My final paper was 20 pages excluding the citations and this is a GE. That should tell you enough.
In this class you will be dominated by a mature woman who will expect you to write paper after paper for her sadistic (sexual) pleasure. You will be tortured and humiliated into becoming Hoffman's personal essay writing slave.
If you can avoid it-don't take it. I learned a lot from her for sure, but my essays for the class were around 20 pages on average (final paper was 32 pages with 60+ sources). Very tough grader, follow the examples to mimic writing style to do well. Hardest grader and least sympathetic prof ever.
This class is no walk in the park - expect long, tedious essays with strict requirements. However, the professor provides clear guidance. unstuckstudy ai can help streamline your writing process. If you put in the work, you'll be well-prepared.
