Cathy is simply amazing! She is kind and she cares about students. I hated English before taking her class but now I feel confident. Take her!
Cathy is a great teacher! Very helpful and clear. Makes the class super fun if you don't enjoy English. Helps a lot during essays and gives great feedback.
cathy jones, she is awesome! great great great feed backs on essays. she is most definitely willing to help you if you are up for the help. A+ teacher! she is awesome, and i just love having her as a teacher!
One of the best English teachers you'll ever have! She's super fun and gives great feedback on homework and essays! She'll always be willing to help you if you make the effort to go to her office hours (plus she gives extra credit for office visits!) actually makes class enjoyable, even though the content is dull. She is amazing! TAKE HER CLASS!
Ms. Jones has an awesome personality and she cares about her students. However, her course was designed around some depressing topics and I did not feel I had the freedom I needed for the 1A class. There were 3 essays with a research paper. The earlier essays we were required to rewrite them so it came out to be a total of 6 essays.. A LOT of work
Cathy Jones is an amazing teacher. She really wants to help you do better. I really do recommend that you go into office hours. She also makes funny remarks.
4 Essays, Several Reading responses, small homework assignments. Pretty easy grader. Super nice.
Took Cathy Jones for English 903 and 1A. She is the best teacher I ever had. She gives great feedback and helps you on your essays. She made me feel confident in writing. I wish she teach English 1B ):. I'm going to miss her class. I highly recommend her.
She is a very difficult professor, not easy to work with. she is too picky
Very aggressive and stubborn personality. Very picky about irrelevant details. Disreputable.
She's very picky about every single word you use, English is my second language and she left me with 0 confidence. whenever I wrote an Essay, I got my paper back with tones of disappointing outlines....
TOUGHEST grader for a lit/film class. All A's in 4 Eng. classes & won an essay contest. I got an F on all four papers. She's too harsh on unnecessary bits. Even if ur there everyday & do your best. it's not good enough for her. I am mad i had to withdrawal 6 weeks b4 the semester ended. she wants us to do well but she's actually more discouraging
I got A's in four English classes with two separate teachers but failed all of Mrs. Jones's papers and revisions. She was overly critical about the tiniest of details, such as google docs MLA not meeting HER MLA criteria. She's also harsh with rules, she thinks you're tardy if you aren't literally IN your seat by 9:20. I found her to be too picky.
She gives out a lot of homework every class so be prepared. She instructs that the homework must be print out and brought to class to receive points which makes attendance mandatory. I found myself dreading to go to her class after a few weeks because the work load became so heavy.
She is straight up mean. She pushes her beliefs on all students and if you have different opinion your grade will suffer.
Best teacher ever! Shes tough but you will learn. Love her. Would take anything with her.
Mrs. Jones is an amazing and challenging teacher. Her classes are hard, no doubt, but all you need to do is show up on time and get your work done. If you have trouble, she'll always respond and makes sure that you genuinely understand the material. Her class isn't hard if you just make an effort.
Argues with students, and won't grade papers completely. She will tell you to revise a paper even though she did not give you revisions to work on. She graded 3/4 of my essay that was 3 1/2 pages long and told me to revise it. As far as I know I thought I did a good job. How am I suppose to improve or learn in this class.
She makes up definitions for words like redo, and late. She thinks they're the same.
She is very harsh on grading your paper and work. She wants you to make an effort in her her class and writing but she wont make an effort in grading properly so you can learn from your mistakes. She's not clear with her notes and revises, and she will have a lot of moments in class where she will complain about your work and her pay grade.
She seriously ruined all confidence I once had with writing. Her comments are not helpful but instead come across as rude. Cathy is just straight up mean. If you can take another profs class, I would.
Although Mrs. Jones is a tough grader, she is an amazing teacher. She makes you work for your grade instead of slacking back. She transformed my writing. Shes very cool when you talk to her, and will provide help if needed. If youre not willing to put in work, this isnt the teacher for you.
Cathy was the best professor I've ever taken. She helped me improve my writing so much, and she truly cares about her students. I wish I could take another class with her.
Coming from a very writing heavy high school I felt very confident in my writing. When I got to her class, her comments were so specific, it seemed as if I didn't have her style of writing I would fail. There was no such thing as constructive criticism. IF YOU ARE NOT CONFIDENT IN YOUR WRITING I DO NOT RECOMMEND!
Horrible teacher that plays favorites. If you get on her bad side, she will score your work poorly and make sure you fail.
The only feedback I've received on my essays was that everything is 'vague', which is ironic since the feedback is vague itself. Unless you conform her specific form of writing-- which is awfully strict and nitpicky-- you're bound to fail. I have gotten A's on all my previous essays, now I've failed every essay in this class (so far).
It's been a couple years since I attended WV, but I still remember the stuff she taught. It was hard, but it really prepared me for the hard work once I transferred to University. I always went to her office hours, and asked specific questions, so I knew what direction to go in. She was helpful. Put the hard work in now so you won't have to later!
Cathy Is very caring and wants to help but she grades really harshly. She wants her essay's written a very specific way and if you have the slightest difference in writing style, get ready to get a bad grade on it. Her comments on the essays were unhelpful. I got really good scores on my essays until I came into her class; failed almost all of them
She cares about all her students. Had her for 2 semesters 1A/1B and she may grade hard, but its because she cares and wants to prepare her students. She may be tough but if you need an extra push then shes the right teacher. always avalible to talk and help.
Took her class about a year ago. She was nice at first, but after a few months she started becoming cold and passive aggressive towards me. She ended up making a comment about my ADHD and sent me a private message telling me I'm better off not showing up. I had a 30 minute breakdown in the Disability Services Office over her. Be warned.
I took the class as part of my GE. Prof. Jones is a good teacher, but she is not very encouraging. She will find ways to bring you down. Her feedback is good, but you will never get a feedback that will encourage you to do better. For me, I did ok in the class, was hoping to do better, but lost all hope to be the best by around the halfway point.
I really thought Cathy would be a great teacher. But as time went on, she got cold. She destroyed any confidence I had in writing, and even when I took her feedback (which by the way, is very brief and not easy to understand) and corrected my work, she says I'm totally off track. Told us every class we weren't good writers. So unmotivating!!!
Honestly, in the beginning, I expected Cathy to be a kind and caring teacher. Over time she became rude and I barely even wanted to attend her class. She is a tough grader and wants everything done HER. EXACT. WAY. It doesn't really allow you to grow, it just makes you work towards reaching her personal standards. Definitely do not recommend.
This class was HARD. You cant BS any of the homework responses because she will not hesitate to give you a 0. You need to put a lot of effort into this class. She grades essays harshly and gives very vague feedback thats pretty unhelpful. She was really passive aggressive and rude in her feedback too which made me scared to write essays lol
At first she seems all happy happy and then she totally destroys you and is super rude and really breaks your spirit.
it was too difficult of a class for me mentally and I had to drop it
Cathy Jones was one of the hardest professors I've ever had. She didn't know boundaries when speaking to her students. She was very discouraging, although she gave very honest feedback. She makes no exceptions, and her personality is hard to get along with. She is a good teacher, and prepares you. But, this class is much harder than others.
Shes really hard but gives good feedback. No exceptions for late work
Do not listen to these other reviews. Cathy is a clear grader, even telling you exactly what the 'fixed' version of your mistake would be. She is caring, respectful, and interesting. I have a re-found passion for reading. She is unique in the sense that you actually have to work to get a good grade. No participation trophies in this class Loved it!
Usually 1b is super poetry heavy. She took into account how tedious this could be so she made it more writing heavy and 'poetry-like' novels. I took another 1b class and it was not nearly as interesting. You can't 'half do' the work, this is a class where you have to participate coherently. Just actually do the homework, it really isn't much.
I actually really got along with Cathy. Her life story is pretty interesting and can really identify with community college students. I feel as though I got great feedback from her and really grew as a writer. I'm off to a four year next year and actually feel prepared. This is the first time since middle school I feel like I've learned anything.
I loved this class so much. Truly one of my favorite courses I have ever taken at West Valley. Cathy is organized, caring, and clear! I had such a great time and this was a very great introduction to the English department at WV. I'm going to take her 1b course for sure. It wasn't easy, it was challenging but in the best of ways.
What's cool about this class is that you get to know Cathy in a really personal way. She is kind, sweeting, sassy, and she'll push you to become better. If you're looking for somebody who will molly coddle you, you're looking in the wrong place. However, you'll actually grow. I feel like she got a lot of slack for not being a push over :(
Great class, really reading heavy but the literature is actually pretty interesting. The first book is pretty challenging at first but you get used to the style after a while. Cathy is pretty dope, funny, and sometimes you'll get to hear her occasional swearing which makes the class that much funnier. Cool class, challenging but cool.
I messed up by not doing some of the readings and not showing up to class. But as soon as I caught up and started engaging in class I saw immediate results. I guess its not one of the typically easy classes you're going to take at West Valley. Sometimes it feels like the other profs just give you credit for existing. I grew as a reader in this clas
In this class you have a direct line to Cathy. She gives your her personal phone number and will text you, email you, whatever if something is up. She is super good at communication and will tell you exactly what you need to do. If you stop doing well, she's on your butt trying to make sure you'll succeed, texting and emailing you. Its sweet.
You read a lot and you can't slack off. It was like what college should be like. I almost missed the challenge. She's a great and funny lady.
LOTS OF READING YOU CANNOT STOP WORKING EVER. She doesn't take late work. Best way to get a good grade on the essays: keep sending her your drafts until she likes them. She takes time out of her personal life to grade essays, you can get a good grade if you utilize her dedication. Hard but rewarding.
Don't listen to the other reviews its almost like they are fake, but trust me u don't want to take this class.
Alright I am going to keep it a buck with y'all this class push me closer to edge every day.
I cannot fathom a worse form of tourer than this class. I look out the window sometime and wonder if today is the day.
The professor was borderline disrespectful, and always has a sassy attitude with students outside of class (especially in critiques) There were no chances to take a breath in this class due to the heavy workload, and overall, I felt extremely unmotivated in all aspects of college because of this class. PLEASE think before enrolling.
Mrs. Jones is a highly polarizing teacher; either students hate her or love her. In my observations, students who drop the class or fail simply are students that want an easy A and are indifferent if they actually improve their writing. To pass the course, it's really simple, Revise, revise, revise.
All the people complaining want participation trophies for the half-a work that most community college professors will give you. She was good but you can't get away with turning in lazy trash for credit. It wasn't an easy A I guess.
This class is terrible, she is very passive aggressive. She will tell you, that you are doing something wrong but won't tell you how to fix it, just that you are doing it wrong. This class has made me lose all motivation for college and now I don't want to do anything because she won't like my work anyway. Your work has to be up to her liking 24/7.
Terrible class. you never have a chance to breath or take a break its work 24/7, and everything has to be 100% on time. not a minute late, no excuses. I DO NOT recommend this class.
You have a life outside of school? not anymore. do you have a job or other classes outside of jones' class? she doesn't care. she thinks you should drop everything and only do school 24/7. she will often say that she got to school early for the class, or she took time out her day to help you when in reality this is her job she gets paid to be here.
I thought students were just being tough on these reviews but she does not care what goes on in your life, she says you can talk to her but she will not be understanding at all. She will call you out in class in front of everyone. If you're writing something for her class she will tell you it's wrong but not how to fix it. She picks at everything.
I'm a little surprised to see Jones have such low ratings, I personally thought she was amazing. She would take time out of her personal life to answer your questions and there was always an opportunity to revise your work for a better grade. Just don't be lazy. She's caring and understanding, what more could you ask for in a professor?
For the first month of Cathy's class, I absolutely loved her! She was amazing, funny, and helpful. It truly seemed like she cared about her students. For the sake of making this short, fast forward to the end she became rude, harsh, and eventually crushed my love for writing as well as my self-esteem. All of my classmates felt the same.
to keep this quick and easy very rude and tough grader. Does not know boundaries
This professor is terrible. I thought I was the only one having problems with this teacher but it seems like every other bad review is spot on. Doesn't give good feedback, expects you to talk to her even on your weekends, acts like you don't have any other class, jobs, family except for her. Grades poorly, don't expect points for your homework.
Cathy's really cool if you show that you're putting in effort into her class. If ur a slacker/late all the time/bad attitude, she'll have a bad attitude w you, so it's better to adjust and get on her good side by doing your part (this goes for 1A & 1B) office hours = extremely helpful, she's very accessible! gonna miss her, she's a tough lady :))
The kids who are knocking her down are those quintessential community college students who think they should get an A for existing. She's fine if you do your homework, listen, and ask questions. As for the kids who say she doesn't tell you how to fix things- if you actually ask her, she'll tell you exactly...
Shes doesnt seem to care about what the student is going through. Assigns way too much reading in a short amount of time. It would take me a minimum on 2-3 to finish the reader and homework. Counts sicks days towards absences. Take a different teacher if youre just taking the class for credits.
When I initially met her, she was friendly and entertaining, but as time went on, she abruptly became haughty. You put a lot of effort into it and have reviewed your papers multiple times, but she still says terrible things about you. She has the biggest ego ever, too!
Many reviews make Cathy out to be rude and unprofessional, but she is just real and upfront with her students. She is understanding to those who are struggling. Her feedback may sound rude, but her comments have the students best interest at heart. She's available to clarify any confusion during or outside of class. She's a great professor overall!
I'll put it simply: If you're an English major and you want the best out of your work and feedback to really help you improve in your field of study, take this class. She's great at giving cold, honest feedback. If you aren't an English major and simply want to take this class for credit, STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASS. You will be frustrated and drop.
Professor Jones brought a better student out of me. Yes, I agree that she was harsh at times, and she is a heavy, and I mean heavy criticizer, but she is fair with her comments and really helped me improve as a writer. So, if you want a class where you can just cruise through the semester, don't pick Professor Jones.
Honestly her personality is alright and her class is sometimes fun. Only problems I have with her is that she is very strict with grading and gives at least one new assignment per class; if you fall behind a little then your chances of passing get lower until the very end of the semester. Also, she grades your attendance.
Mrs. Cathy Jones is an awesome professor. She is a SUPER tough grader and it isn't easy to get a good grade in this class, however if you put in the time and effort with her, she will put the time and effort in with you. she will let you redo assignments AND essays if you are unsatisfied. she goes through step by step of what she is looking for.
She doesn't really have a plan of what to teach when it comes to her classes. She comes into class always saying I don't have a plan for today. She's a really harsh grader when it comes to reading journals as well. Don't take her class!!!
Simply put, a total bully. She completely lacks self-awareness. Assigned more homework than my math, econ, and geography classes combined; despite saying she barely assigns homework. If you miss class she gets EVEN. It's a fight to take her class, never had a teacher treat her students like enemies before.
Professor very presumptuous about all her students. She immediately made claims and statements such as "you don't know how to read" and "you don't know how to truly write an essay". Grading is very nitpicky when detailed but otherwise a majority of the feedback is short and unhelpful such as "good!" or "?" or "not quite". HW load was poorly managed
Don't take this class if you just want to get credit. If you love English and are passionate about this subject, then go ahead. Professor Jones is not just a tough grader; she is a harsh grader because her comments will break your spirit. Expect a new homework assignment after every class. If you choose to take this class, good luck.
Please do not take this class. Learn from my mistake. She grades unfairly and doesnt tell you what she wants from you, leaving you in the dark. She grades your paper by belittling you and talks down to you rather than helping you. She changes her resubmission policies mid semester without telling anyone. She is rude and grades unfairly.
Cathy is alright the workload is a lot and the grading can be a bit difficult but the classes are fun and it's mainly just discussing what happened in the books and providing clarity for everyone. The hard part is trying to feedback. You HAVE to go to office hours or else you will fail. She expects you to write the essay the way she wants.
You will be insulted in this class and she will not bother to try and see things from your perspective. If you are not dedicating your entire life to college she doesn't believe you deserve to be here. She believes she wrote the book on English and if you don't write your essay the exact way she wants it, she will fail you. Goodluck you'll need it.
For the love of all that is holy, do not take her class. The workload is VERY heavy, VERY unorganized, and VERY stressful. The constant backtracking, re-editing, and emailing will get very annoying very fast, and if you are not 100% dedicated to college, good luck. Too much work in too little time. Very disappointed. Seemed nice at first. :(
Had a good experience pretty normal/less workload than what I had in hs was able to balance easy with sports. Just try to build a relationship and act like you care. This made it easy for me and her to help me with my writing. She can be picky on writing but tbh she damn near wrote my whole essay. Just show up and care about class a little and u g
This professor has two different personas: in person she is relaxed & encouraging, but her comments online come across curt and annoyed. While I appreciate that she takes time commenting on my drafts, not all of her comments make sense and she gets angry if you don't respond quickly. Instructions for assignments are rambling and wordy.
The job of a TEACHer is to make sure students LEARN. When a number of students get D's and F's on papers more than halfway through the course it's clear that learning is not happening - partly because this professor cannot TEACH. Making a barrage of critical, snarky, Google comments is not teaching! I really wanted to learn but it's not happening.
She's blunt, funny, good stories (over sharing a bit), and very engaging. Also very very strict essay grader, you must stay on top of reading (2 hours every night min.). If u must take her class just follow her directions well—once she made me delete a paragraph and wrote one for me on an essay. Anti-intellectual and just wants you to agree w her
I've always excelled at english but cathy made me feel hopeless at times. Rigorous and draining. She shuns anyone who challenges her opinions and seems to follow a script. I actually did well because I put SO much energy into it, but it was rough. She doesn't take a lot seriously. If u like english save urself and don't take her
Cathy is extremely strict on attendance and adds it as a grade, so if you're an athlete and have to miss class for sports PLUS you get sick? It reflects in your grade. She couldn't care less if you coordinate with her. You must write exactly like her and she's extremely condescending. Even if you're good at English, she crushes your spirit.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF YOUR MENTAL HEALTH DON'T TAKE HER CLASS Passed with a good grade after dropping 2 other classes and many sleepless nights don't let her trick you with the nice act for the first 2 weeks it was a trap!
Cathy is the best! I took 1A with her and taking 1B this semester with her again. She's super funny and no BS, no agenda. She's hard but if you do the work it's no problem. Wants you to actually use your brain and learn something. Seems like the haters on here still want to be in high school.
No matter how much effort was put into each assignment it was never the way she wanted it. She seems to have a very 1-dimensional outlook on topics that could have different ideas to it. She also does not care about her students and is easily the worst English teacher I've had in my educational career.
On one hand, this class is really really tough, we speedran two papers for two books, writing short, very dense, analytical papers. But!! She is horrifically available to response, and If you took ap lit in high school, or ap lang for that matter, this won't be anything you haven't seen before. She also has infinite snacks! Would take again :)
She is strict, harsh, inconsiderate and impatient. I was told to catch up on work, but later told I couldn't submit it. No matter what I did, it felt like I was set up to fail. The professor wasn't very understanding, even when I reached out for help and explained my struggles. If you need flexibility or support, please do not take her class.
I took her class in 2022, and let me tell you, when I didn't respond to her comments right away she would be very rude and disrespectful.Especially after opening up on how much I personally took on at home. She brought her person Life into it suggesting how she manages it well. I got told I had a disability in this class by her.
Very disrespectful and rude! She was a "my way or the Highway" kind of teacher; she would nitpick my word choices, and if you didn't do it exactly as she wanted it you would have to redo the entire thing. I had to re-write my final essay because I wouldn't go into detail about my experiences with my mental health and trauma (very personal topics).
She's a really, really hard grader and her feedback is not the best, she wants her class to be VERY prioritized and she does help but she can be very confusing. I would not take a class with her again.
Do not take her class. She is extremely passive-aggressive and rude. There are many comments on here about her being rude and disrespectful because it is true!!. I saw someone mention that she puts on a nice act for the first two weeks and it could not be more true. Stay far away from this class she will make your life so hard.
If you like your life DO NOT take her class. Her comments are insanely unprofessional and rude. Don't even bother opening up about your personal life because she couldn't care less. Protect your peace and happiness and stay far, far away from her and the humiliation ritual she calls a class.
On one hand, she's great at responding to feedback in a timely manner and always has a clear outline of what to do in class. However, it's difficult to understand her feedback, and often times, her classroom feels like commands from an army general rather than a teacher. I've never cried in a Zoom meeting until I was in her class.
Absolutely terrible teacher who gives confusing feedback. Constantly nitpicks, takes me more than 2-3 hours to complete one day of homework. Save yourself and drop this class before she destroys your gpa and life😭
Seriously do not take her class, especially for 1B. She's extremely rude, contradicting, and condescending. If you're an athlete definitely steer clear. She's inflexible and unkind. Needs every thing to be her way even if its wrong. I feel like I'm being cyber bullied every time I get a message from her. Most rage baiting class ever.
Ive never had a teacher like this in my life. No matter how much effort you put into your paper it is NEVER gonna be enough for her becuz shes so close minded. If youre ideas arent like hers she will sh1t on you until you get it right. DONT take her at all the semester isnt even over and more than half the class ended up dropping the class.
she is super kind and easy to talk to but her gradin feedback isn't clear and she wants something both simple and college level out of your work? idek
Snarky, passive-aggressive, and condescending. She clearly hates her job and makes it everyone's problem. Her feedback is vague and unhelpful. She and her class have next to no redeeming qualities. If you actually want to learn and develop your writing skills, stay far away from this class.
She's hard and wants you to work. But she lets you revise anything you want so if you do the work its impossible to fail. Super funny and nice. Just have to do the work and ask for revisions if you need it. She's a no BS kind of person.
This lady genuinely thinks she invented the subject. Don't expect good grades unless you can perfectly replicate her semi-colon spamming & pretentious writing style. Her idea of feedback is snarky & berating comments over Google Docs & Canvas. Not only that, she has 'hidden participation points' weighted enough to drop you from an A+ to failing.
I don't understand the reviews Cathy receives. She was one of the best teachers I've ever had, and I wish I could've taken her 1A too. She values hard work and effort, and if you put in that effort, you'll be fine. Don't let these comments deter you from Cathy; they are likely from individuals who thought they could get by with the bare minimum.
She gives good feedback and you can revise anything you want for a better grade, which I really liked. The essays were done in steps so it didn't feel overwhelming. But, you have to come to class and work and not slack too much. But I kinda liked that she has standards...it made me feel like I was really in college and doing something.
turn back now.
Ms. Jones has a high standard for ALL her students (hates the “slacker” mindset) Show her effort and she will return that effort 10 fold. I WOULDN'T recommend this class for someone looking for an easy A but if you enjoy communicating through literature, I would 110% recommend. take this class; one of the best teachers I've ever had.
I took her class a couple years back and her attitude is volatile. My mom was in the hospital while I was in her class and she told me during early morning office hours that I had to either prioritize my dying mother or school. Never once have I had any professor say that to me let alone to my face. She doesn't care about your time. Avoid!
Not great! I've always done well with English in school but struggled in her class. Very strict grading and expects your writing to be perfect (college professor level). I was respectful with her but she came off as very passive aggressive and condescending in her essay feedback. MAYBE she is a good teacher for a English major. I'd skip!
Based on my experience in this class, we didn't have any homework. If you didn't finish your work you could finish it for hw and turn it in next class. You can revise anything you want for more points and feedback. In the beginning of the semester, there is a lot of group work, and towards the end of the semester, it's independent work.
