Very fun teacher. Can go to her at any time for help.

Makes science fun! Class is challenging but she is very helpful
Great teacher and very helpful. Her ethics class was pretty interesting although it would have been nice to have more time to cover some of the issues that came up. I also had her and Mrs. Lynn Kennedy for CHEM 1211/1212 labs and I would recommend them!
Material for class doesn't seem to match up with a Sci 1000 class - she goes off the subject much too often.
She's highly intelligent and sometimes seems to forget that we are not on her level! lol Her tests are a bit challenging but overall she's a pretty good teacher. Just needs to work on clarity at the novice level.
She is an awesome teacher and will do anything to help. She is very friendly and treats you like an adult. I have had her for 3 classes and highly recommend her. Her tests can be challenging, esp. the take home portions but you always learn something.
Do not take this professor over the summer. She packs all of the information in, which is expected, but she doesnt make it very clear. She was a good teacher but her exams were extremely difficult.
lot of fun in lab
Funny, nice, and outgoing. She will help you with anything you need. Makes Chemistry more easy to learn and understand.
ALL THE TESTS AND QUIZZES WERE TAKE HOME BUT THEY ARE TOUGH.--PLAN TO SPEND A FEW DAYS WORKING ON THEM...BUT OVERALL SHE IS VERY HELPFUL AND A DELIGHT TO TALK WITH OUTSIDE OF CLASS
she's not that hard people. she gives out weekly quizzes (take home) so you can boost your grade up. tests are hard, but you do one third of it as a take home. i got an A in that class, and i know chemistry pretty well now b/c of her.
good teacher
Dr. MacGowan is a very good professor. She gives you take home portions of the test, as well as take home quizzes. Do these early so you can ask for help if you need it- her door always seems to be open and she is very helpful. The lab grade and the OWL homework also help your grade- so use it to your benefit. I highly recommend!
Great with explaning complex topics
She is extremely hard!! I loved Chemistry in High School but she made it not so enjoyable. She talks about elements as if they are people and sometimes her jokes go over one's head. Shes sweet though
Great Professor. Fun to listen to, kinda comical. If you do the work assigned and do decent on the tests, you will do well.
AWESOME TEACHER!!! Had her for Fall and taking one of her Summer classes this summer!!!!
SHe approaches the Lab experience with a sense of humor, and provides you with all the tools you should need to get the job done. She answered every question I had, and I enjoyed the semester. Definitely looking to sign up for her for Chem 2 in the fall.
great professor. shes one of the nicest teachers but gives a lot of work. your grade reflects what you put into it. if you do the assignments do well on tests, which arent that bad, then you'll do fine. lots of opp's for extra credit too. definetly recommended
MUST TAKE THIS PROFESSOR FOR CHEM! She is great and explains all the concepts clearly and concisely. Had her for lab as well and her good nature and ability to help you understand carried over to that as well. Her tests may be harder for others but she makes up for it by driving home the major concepts and critical information. GREAT!!1
She is not only a WONDERFUL Chem teacher, but she's extremely kind and understanding. Her sense of humor makes class more enjoyable, and she is always willing to help you outside of class, no matter how swamped she is. She makes you work, but you come out actually having learned something.
Dr. Mac is willing to help you with problems that you don't understand but once you get into lecture you're totally confused. She talks way to way and those out of class assignments are horrible. I dropped her class and i def. will not take her again.
her tests are extremely difficult our class average for most of tests was 66% dont take her
Great Teacher! Not an extremly easy class but not hard either. Go to class and do the OWL homework. If you have questions ASK.. she is very helpful!!
She is hard if you don't attend her lectures. Her tests are really hard and confusing. She gives out of class homework worth like 40pts which is hard as hell. She's a nice lady though...if you ask her questions and come to class then she'll even pass you if your failing the class!! DO the Owl!
Dr. MacGowan is an excellent teacher! She's tough, but she just wants to make sure that everyone understands a concept inside and out. I had her for CHEM 1212 Lab: there's a quiz every lab day, lab reports, 2 formal lab reports, a presentation and a final. I got an A in her class. She is always willing to help! Recommend!
Great teacher for first time teaching a class. Extremely understanding and adjusted the work load as the semester went on. Would definitely take her again. She made the class fun and interesting.
She is a good teacher. I took her summer class, so it was a lot of reading and writing. She grades fair. Very interesting class. I enjoyed the class. I would take her again for this class if I had to.
Her tests are soo hard. She's not the professor you should take for an easy A, I studied quite a bit for her class and only made a B. She's always available if you need her and always willing to help.
Awesome teacher. Must take her. I had her for Chem 1211 and she was very nice and helpful. Her tests aren't hard but tricky. She is willing to help anyone. If you don't understand, ask questions. Must Attend her lectures. She is the best but also tough. Recomended!!!
I had her lab and it was fun. She is fun and explains concepts well. She made VERY tough exams and quizzes. They did not have trick questions, but were a major challenge nonetheless, despite major studying!
One of the best teachers i ever had. She has a great way to make the class interesting. Word of caution; You may want to read the textbook for additional info, because sometimes the test question are based on material from it. Attend lectures and do OWL. You'll Be Fine.
very good teacher but you need to study for the class she explains things very well
Love Dr. Mac! She's awesome! I am terrible at science and earned an A in her class. She radiates with a passion for teaching! She taught some great tips for teaching young children for cheap!
I must say, I am not good at Chemistry to begin with, but I definitely recommend doing the OWL homework and the back of the book problems. Also, go to class because you get points even just for taking the quizzes! She is willing to help outside of class which is good because she moves fast!
She is a great teacher. Easy to relate to and gives a good lecture. All her powerpoints are on Vista. Just pay attention in class, and if you have a good chem background that helps too!
She is a good professor. She's a little absent-minded and can ramble during her lectures. Make sure you do the online homework because there are questions that will help you for the tests. Warning: her tests are *VERY* challenging, but if the whole class doesn't do well she will usually either curve it or offer a retake option.
Dr. Mac is a great chem professor! I disagree that she's absent minded. She always has interesting and intellectual things to say, and she's wonderful to talk to one on one. Her tests aren't that difficult if you like chemistry, but the questions can be tricky. Also, try to keep up with the homework so you don't end up doing them all last minute.
Very kind and smart teacher. DR. Mac does everything by PowerPoint and her notes are on vista. Helps you when you need it. Tests were hard, but as long as you STUDY and do the online homework and quizzes, you can pass. Don't procrastinate with the homework either.
Dr. Mac is probably one of the sweetest and most intelligent professors on campus. Her class is extremely hard but she is very helpful. If you want to learn something about general chemistry, I suggest you sign up for her class. People just looking for an easy A, good luck because you wont find it here. Make sure you do all the online homework!
I did not think this professor did a good job of teaching at all. She taught as if her students were already experts in chemistry. She goes WAY too fast and talks in Greek. If you take her, go ahead and learn the first couple chap cause she skips the basic ion bonds & atom stuff. I'm an A student but I could not follow her at all. Dropped with a W.
Very good teacher, will do anything to make sure you understand. She tries to keep class interesting and she isn't boring. I would definitely take her again if i had the chance! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Took her for 1211 lab. Her instructions are not very clear, and when she teaches she seems to get so caught up in what she is teaching that she forgets her students don't know everything she does about chemistry. She doesn't make much sense when she teaches.
A very fast, non boring pace. If you are going to learn something, you better pay attention. Don't be afraid to stick your hand up in the air to ask a question. Funny, sweet and sincere about making sure everyone understands. Not an easy A, but I highly recommend.
Her lab is simple to follow, but her grading is eratic. She will grade you as hard as possible whether you understood what she was trying to get you to understand or not. Very difficult to work with.
Dr. Mac is a good professor. She only offers this particular ethics course once every few semesters, but I wouldn't say "jump" at the chance to take it. Only 4 assignments (essays) and a final (another essay). She is certainly nice, but she turns an interesting topic into a boring subject through her approach.
one of the nicest prof. armstrong has to offer. very helpful as well. taking lab (summer) with her has been a pleasure and i would highly recommend. helps you step by step unlike other lab instructors who make you figure it out on your own.
I had Dr. Mac for chem lab and she was awesome. She is extremely helpfull just go and ask. Lab material is covered in a slightly unusual way. It is an investigative form of research and you must do the work to comprehend and do well. Dr. Mac is A+++++++
Had her for chem lab! she is awesome and helpful! She explains exactly what you have to do in lab, and most lab teachers do not! She is very clear on what she wants and grades fairly on lab reports! I recommend her if you can get into her class, they fill up quick!
She's an amazing teacher. She will help you if you have any questions, in or out of class. She's highly experienced, and if you actually want to learn something, take her class. You have to study though, you can't just procrastinate your way through..
Dr. MacGowan is great! she is willing to help you in both lecture and lab! She explains the material for class in simple english so that you can understand easily. I HIGHLY recommend dr macgowan.
Dr. MacGowan is absolutely the best professor EVER. She is willing to work with you until you understand everything. She is brilliant and passionate about chemistry. I don't understand how ANYONE can get a bad grade in her class. She does everything she can to help you get a good grade i.e. extra credit etc AND explains everything in layman's terms
excellent teacher! she really understands the students point of view and gives test questions through out the class. attendance is not mandatory, but attendance+homework is 50% of your grade!
tough, but fair. Great professor
I took MacGowan for Chem one and transferred to USC (my dream college) and I am now in organic chemistry and she still helps me out even though I am not a student anymore. By far the nicest person and best teacher I have had to date. Her lectures made everything very clear and any questions I had I asked and got a crystal clear explanation.
She really knows her chemistry. She is really passionate about chemistry and expects you to be in class. If you skip class, you will be behind. She is very fair. As long as you do all the online homework assignments and homework, you should be ok. Only 4 tests worth 40% of grades and not she is not easy, but fair. Use online homework to study
She is very knowledgeable and passionate about chemistry. Not easy and hard tests, but very fair. Do not skip class and complete all assignments ontime, use online homework to help study for tests. KNOW YOUR IONS AND OXIDATION #'S. Enjoyed the class but had to work for it.
Tough Tests but she's fair overall, willing to help you in class if you ask for help -- P also she gives Partial Credit ...
This professor is one of the toughest I've had all year. I wouldn't recommend her to anyone.
Dr. Mac is probably one of my favorite professors in the Chemistry department. She is a hoot and she tells you exactly what she wants. She loves for you to come to her if you have any issues. If you put in effort she will as well.
Professor Macgowan was an awesome instructor, She's very clear during lectures. She gives partial credit which is amazing. Her exams are tough but she is completely fair with grading. She does give an extra credit assignment to help with final. She is willing to some text if you have a lot in one day. I highly recommend her!!!
Dr. MacGowan is a great professor. She provides many ways for the student to pass the class. She has quizzes and homework that count a lot towards your average grade. The test are really tough. You must study extremely well. Also taking advantage of the extra credit opportunities can help you pass. She grades fairly and is willing to help.
Dr. Mac is by far one of the best teachers there, a tough grader, but more than willing to go the extra mile to help you.
She is awesome. She cares, she gives clear instructions about what will be on the tests, and you learn a lot. She gives practice problems. As long as you study them and get them down, you will do well. She also used to work for Ford so I really enjoyed her. 10/10 would take again.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!! All the other comments about her are so nice but that's only because she's a nice person. Her tests are the hardest tests I've ever taken and they don't line up with the notes, book, or the homework so you're kinda on your own for studying. Even my tutor couldn't help me because the information was too hard for her.
Ignore any negative comment on this message board. Anyone that doesnt do well in her classes are people who dont use office hours correctly. Dr. MacGowan is the best. She explains everything so well. She gives a practice test and practice problems. Some of which show up on the exam. Id take her for every chemistry class offered if I could.
You are allowed to use your notes on your last exam and final exam. She averages your lowest and highest test grade that will help boost your grade a whole letter grade. I strongly recommend her. She does not care on attendance - you will have a few homework assignments and quizzes but not too many.
Dr. MacGowen was a great professor. She does move quickly in the lecture and tends to talk in circles but utilize her office hours. Always do the practice exams cause some questions can show up on the test. Just take advantage of the practice problems/exam practice and the class will play out well for you.
I took CHEM 1211 w/ Dr. MacGowan this summer. I haven't taken chem in 6 years so the material was hard for me but she does her best to make sure you understand and gives you plenty opportunities to succeed. Gives practice exams which have questions that will be on the tests. Willing to answer any questions you have. Good sense of humor, was great!
Great professor! I will be taking her again for 1152. I have realized that the grade you receive is what you work for. I never missed class and sat up front. Exams would always range from 20s - 90s. It isn't a class you can slack off in. Her exam questions are just like her notes and lectures, so just pay attention. You get study guides & tutoring.
Dr. Mac is a really nice person and shes very laidback in her tests. She curves a lot too.
She is the hardest Professor EVER, with the WORST tests! I studied for HOURS for each test and I understood the material, but then the tests and I got Ds and one B because they are CRAZY. The class average on one test was a 30. But DO THE HOMEWORK AND QUIZES, that got me up a whole letter grade. She also is demeaning when you get something wrong.
Dr. MacGowan is brilliant. She means well, but goes through material very quickly and slightly scattered. She doesn't do a great job of answering questions during lectures and has a condescending attitude in general. One-on-one during her office hours, she can be a lot nicer and more helpful. In general, she can be hard to follow and discouraging.
Dr. Macgowan is one of the hardest professors that I have ever taken. If you have the choice not to take her, DON'T. She does not care about the students understanding in class. When asking questions in lecture she will respond ignorantly and make you feel dumb. Good luck with her tests, the hardest tests ever.
I'm not sure how Dr MacGowans 1211 lecture is, but I cried every single night in her 1212 lecture. Ended up retaking with a different professor and quickly fell back in love with chemistry. I've loved 1211, 1212 (with new prof), & 3401. Nice lady, but i wouldn't recommend her to anybody.
There's weekly homework that counts toward grade; the weekly quizzes are extra-credit. The 5 exams get difficult overtime. To prepare, do many practice problems. Understand the content and the formulas. Her lectures may be great when it comes to simplifying chemistry, but her tests ask questions that are detailed and overlooked in lecture.
I took online chem w/ lab. Clear structure with everything open to work at your own pace with due dates in line. Every unit has homework and quiz with multiple attempts and a lab and then you take the exams. Exams are way harder than homework and quizzes so watch out! When I was confused she was immediately available for a zoom meeting to explain.
I took her Spring Chem 1211 she "was on the board that creates standardized testing, and know how to write tricky tests". I passed all her HW, and stuff but failed EVERY TEST/EXAM, because Level 1 Lecture but Level 3 Test/Exam. I have had a straight A GPA up to Junior Year Spring Semester when I took this class. SAVE YOUR GPA AND SKIP HER!!!!!
Nice professor, however, even if you try to prepare for the exams, they're always difficult! The homework she gives is doable but the exams are the things to worry about. I'm still taking her class as of right now and so far I failed one, barely passed 2, and still have two more left. If I had a choice I would have chosen a different professor
Very genuine professor, was very helpful for me. Her lectures were a bit difficult to follow. The HW and Exams were next level application, but she was great with grade curves and for a class I probably should have failed, I passed with a B. She was very open to meeting to explain things further, and responded to emails timely.
A decent professor but the way she teaches is not my fav. She goes through material fast and she's always making jokes or has a jokey tone that's a bit off putting. I signed up for Padgett since I had MacGowan for 1211 and didn't like her but ended up getting put in her class anyways which is highly annoying. If she did lecture vids she'd be a 5/5
Dr. Mac is amazing. I LOVED her. She doesn't make the course any more difficult than it already is. Tests aren't too heavily weighed but they are tough. She is a very fair graded and will give credit if she can see where your thought process is. attendance is not mandatory, but DONT SKIP lecture helps for tests!
Absolutely loved her class. PowerPoints were very straightforward and taught everything that you need for the exam. Take advantage of the extra credit opportunities, and actually do the homework because it helps. She made Chem make sense to me and didn't make the class harder than it needed to. Would take her again in a heartbeat
Dr. Mac is a great lecturer and genuinely cares about her students. She makes sure you understand the material and is very fair and lenient about grading. I would highly recommend her!
She's not great, but still better than Yvonne Roach. Always willing to help, just sometimes makes things harder to understand and you need to ask for additional explanations. Then again, at least she teaches you the material, unlike Yvonne Roach, who just expects you to automatically know it and absorb the info like you're Spongebob or something.
She was an alright professor but the course seemed very unorganized. Attendance wasn't mandatory but if you do decide to go to the lecture I wouldn't miss any classes because there is no way to tell where she left off in the class you missed. Nothing she said came off of the slides. I would take notes on what she says and look at the slides later.
They really just let anyone be a professor!
