Eccentric in the good way. Very artiste. She gets mad if people don't do work, but is very good at what she teaches. Mostly she wants students to learn about themselves in the class, so it's an eye-opener. Get on her good side and she is fantastic.
She is an awesome! If you want to learn more about yourself and how to become a much better writer ... Take her! She is different from most teachers and I would say my writing had improved at least 25% from only half of the semester so far. Also NEVER miss a workshop!! At least without a Dr.s Note
Good Professor. Very helpful and approachable.
loooooooved her! very funny and had wonderful class lectures with a lot of class involvement so i never fell asleep hahah...wonderful teacher and i would request her to anyone!
I LOVE this professor! She can easily come off as a hard ass but she's soo "real" and in your face. But also kind and sincere. She'll teach you a lot and you get to go on fieldtrips! U'll get to know a lot people as well as their & your own style of writing. Like a good book she may require lot of assigments but she's a good fast read ;)
She is snide and not a fair grader. Plays favorites to those who worship her and ignore those with individualistic ideas. Bad professor and very disorganized.
In the class you will write one fiction story >1250 words, one non fiction>1250 words and a bunch of poems. you'll write about two more two page papers about an artistic event you have gone to withen the semester. Go to class meetings- she takes attendence. She's very nice and cool. You will do moderate amounts of work but thier are no tests!
Prof. Miller knows her stuff. Lectures short yet packed w/info. Gives insightful, honest feedback on writing assignments; any criticism is matched w/suggestions to strengthen your piece. As her student, you'll feel supported & encouraged in your creative writing endeavors. You will be a better writer because of this fantastic professor.
Prof. Miller is the type of teacher that will encourage you do write without guilt or limitations.Without sounding corny, this class allowed me to express feelings with a sense of anonymity.Prof. Miller is not like your typical stuffy english teacher-she's really cool and is in touch with what our age group thinks and feels. You wont regret taking he
Thanks to Professor Miller, I am about to have an essay published! She gives excellent advice on ways to strengthen creative pieces. She encourages students to submit their pieces for publication. I revised a piece based on her suggestions and submitted it to Reed Magazine. Reed accepted my essay for publication in the 2008 edition.
Wonderful professor who shows great concern for her students and the improvement (and encouragement) of their work. If you want to have fun AND develop your writing, this is the place for you.
Terrible organization of the course. No tests/quizzes, and homework never graded. Perfect attendance, full class contribution, full participation, full effort and quality, yet still only a B+. Had no idea what my grade would be at end of semester or why it was a B+ and not an A. Other classmates said the same.
Great class for mature students who don't need babysitting and hand-holding. You take from it what you bring to it, and Prof. Miller will help you extract the best. Not for cry babies who want to be rubber-stamped through college!
She's an awesome teacher and even more importantly she's an awesome person. I enjoyed her course so much.
Great class learned a lot. You have to want to write in class, you cant come to class and expect to breeze through. it takes work but your going to come out a better writer in the end
Great Teacher! Very interesting class, Prof Miller gives great feedback on all your essays! She also helps you to think about essays that you read in a different light. Organized enough, not disorganized. Not a ton of homework but a lot of reading. Random quizzes occasionally and lots of group work.
Learned alot about different types of creative writing, yet she provided little help other than basic instruction for learning to write new types of writing, could of went into more depth of what is expected in her assisgments. Group work is good, class was fun.
The best thing about taking miller is that even on days you feel like not going to class, you leave feeling like it was worth it. She also gives you positive feedback and constructive criticism of your work. and YAY! no tests!
Class with Professor Miller was relaxing, fun, and a great learning experience. Great, and I mean GREAT discussions each class, and always looked forward to it. She takes note when people are absent, and provides good feedback with essays. Participation is pretty big. Journal writing each class, everything was graded. Definitely recommended!
Great class, inspired me enough to declare my major in creative writing. I highly recommend the class and the professor for anyone who is even remotely interested in writing.
If you like to write, take Cathy's class. She's funny, supportive, and honest with her students, and the assignments are a lot of fun. She's one of the few professors I've had who managed to give directions without discouraging individual style.
I had Professor Miller for English 1B and she was so nice. We spent the semester reading and writing about the presidential election since it was going on at the time. I never was interested in the news or politics before this class. She made me realize that we need to be more concerned about voicing our opinions. She was chill and very helpful.
I had Professor Miller for creative writing and non-fiction writing. For both classes she was very supportive of my writing. What I liked most about her teaching style is that she treats the students like adults. What this means is that our ideas are listened to with much respect--something which not too many professors do well with. Overall great!
Professor Miller is great! The material we covered was really interesting and we had some really fun class discussions. She has a great sense of humor, and she made the class very enjoyable.
She is awesome. Always willing to clarify or provide extra help. It's like she really cares if we learn the material. She teaches with an effective style that is engaging and captivating. I would take this class again if I had the chance.
Professor Miller shows great concern for her students and the improvement of their work.
Great instructor. Cares a lot. Very informed. I refer back to what I was taught by Prof Miller very often in my own teaching. She was tough, but I highly recommend her.
Seemed more interested in telling the class about her own career rather than furthering ours as future career writers. Did not provide helpful criticism on papers returned. Not a super hard teacher, but definitely made me question my choice as an English major.
Great professor! Always there for assistance. Heavy work load, but by the end of semester your writing skills will improve at least 25%. Take this class.
Cathy is a great teacher and I learned a lot in her class. I have a job now because of what I learned from Cathy!
Prof. Miller's classes are wonderful for anyone who is interested in becoming a professional writer. She knows the ins and outs of the business and gives students real world as well as writing and editing skills. Her texts are always interesting and relevant, her teaching style is engaging, and her classes have been the most useful to me.
She was an excellent teacher! Obviously very intelligent, and was able to bring out the best in my writing. Thanks Cathy!
Great professor, sweet, intelligent, cares about the class, helpful exercises. I would recommend!
When I took her creative writing class, I was considering changing majors. By the end of the semester, I had changed my mind.
She was not very helpful with questions and concerns that students had. She was very disorganized. Did everything I could to try to get a good grade (showed up, participated, did assignments) in the class, but ended up with a B. She played favorites with students with better "talent."
This professor is veru helpful, her class was challenging. She provided useful feedback about students work. I learned a lot from this class.
Prof. Miller challenges you, but in a constructive way. To be honest... to this day, I have never had a better english teacher than prof. Miller. I really feel my writing improved after taking this class. If you want to finally learn how to write, take her class!
I have always associated writing with punishment... but Prof. Miller revealed to me the value of written word. I now experience pleasure rather than pain when I sit down to write. I had never understood rhetoric until Prof. Miller opened my eyes to the power of well written words. If you want to improve your writing skills, talk to Prof. Miller.
Extremely effective teacher for creative writing. Helps the students understand how to commit to writing in a smooth and fun-filled atmosphere.
Wonderful teacher. Prof. Miller is truly interested in teaching her students the "craft" of writing. You will have to work hard, but you will learn the discipline involved in being a serious writer.
I had her for non-fiction. She is willing to discuss writing craft with students. Her comments are helpful, but students really need to put forth an effort- you can NOT breeze through this class
Pr. Miller, isn't a professor whose going to crack the whip on you, and make sure that you're "doing all of your homework," but she is quite knowledgeable. She's very approachable, and she's very experienced. If you put all of your effort into her assignments you'll get a lot out of her classes.
Had her for my creative writing class. One of my favorite professors at SJSU. Really great to talk to and helps you if you have any questions. I don't know how anyone CANNOT like her class. It's the best!
Writing in Prof. Miller's class is a serious art. Anyone who puts effort into the class will be a better writer by the end of the semester.
Professor Miller is one of my favorite professors at SJSU. She is a passionate and intelligent woman and her classes are amazing and informative. She broadened my horizons to all the genres of creative writing and made writing creative nonfiction enjoyable. I owe my style and my love of the craft to Professor Miller.
Cathy provided an awesome atmosphere for writing and workshopping with other student writers. She made her class a great stepping stone to publishing your writing and feeling comfortable reading your work.
she was awesome, i love her
I started the class with another professor but switched with a senior who needed that section. I wasnt sure at first about Cathy but she is a great teacher! I was inspired to go deeper into my writing and I still think some of the best work I have ever done was in her class. Also, almost everyone showed up every day, so that tells you something.
She loves the word...exigence....great teacher....really helped me to improve my writing
This was a great class! I loved it and it was a lot of fun. Miller is a great teacher who understands her students and wants to learn about them as individuals. She wants to know the students thoughts and what we have to offer. The stories we read in this class were also a great selection. Not a very hard grader. I would recommend this class
Phenomenal feedback, plenty of guidance and room granted to spread your wings. Each class was a mystical experience. Would gladly take classes under this professor again.
She's very dramatic, which makes her both kind of "out there" and creative.
I took her for both creative writing and non-fiction and I adore her! She has a very unique way of teaching. She is a well accomplished writer so she grades hard because she knows whats out there. She is honest about what she likes and encourages people to write. Be prepared to work hard for an amazing outcome!
A great teacher that I've had 3x now! She really seems to enjoy what she does and has a world of experience to relay. Fair grader but always expects the best from you. Also, she always has such a great style and the outfits she wears +s so much more to the classroom experience. She's also quite funny but very strict about people talking over others
fun teacher and always upbeat. workload is by far less than u expect. just do all the essays and u'll pass not doubt about it.
Cathy Miller is passionate about what she teaches and knows what she's talking about. The class is informative and helpful for improving your writing. 3 of the students in her class, including myself, won the non-fiction writing contest at SJSU the semester we took her class. She is a great person to learn from.
Great professor, fun and encouraging of student work, but very honest in her feedback, too.
brings in authors, is really enthusiastic about our writing careers, very personable--someone to emulate!
Cathy Miller is an excellent professor whose experience in the real world is truly an asset to writers. The knowledge that I have gained from taking two of her classes has helped me tremendously. I use the techniques that I have learned from her, and am grateful to have had the opportunity to have her as my instructor. She is an asset to SJSU!
Cathy Miller's nonfiction writing seminar was one of the most informative and engaging courses in my MFA course work. Her teaching style is informative, supportive and practical since she brings first-hand knowledge of the writing/publishing world. I learned things in this course that I use every time I sit down to write.
She is a great professor! She's one of the few professors that really challenge you to do better. You learn about politics and life in her class as well as grammar and rhetoric! She gives you her expectations, and lets you decide which way you want to meet those in your paper.I still use what I've learned in her class freshman year at SJSU at UCD.
Loved this english class. Not boring at all. The assignments were legit and were explained clearly. I'd recommend this professor.
This non-fiction was great experience for me as an English major. Cathy treats the students like mature adults and treats the class as a practice for a career in writing. Nothing about the class is trivial. She gives excellent, pertinent feedback as well. You will write better by the end of the semester.
I took narrative nonfiction with Cathy and found the class to be one of the most rewarding and informative I've taken at state. She's approachable, knowledgeable, and very interested in seeing her students succeed. I give her an A++.
I have taken all Prof. Miller's classes. It was not until her class at SJSU where I learned how to write. Her skillful teaching tactics assisted me in my Business writing and made my 100W class possible with an A+! I highly recommend Prof. Miller for any student wanting to learn the craft of writing, or wanting to improve their skills.
I owe Mrs. Miller so much credit for my current writing career. She was so helpful and encouraging. She took us on field trips to see famous writing haunts in San Francisco. Without her guidance, I would never be a magazine editor today. Thanks, CAM!
I really learned a great deal about the four different genres of creative nonfiction in her class. And I credit her with giving me the courage to "voice" my views on the value of writing, as well as with helping me develop my interviewing skills to write profile features. Thanks CAM!
Cathy Miller is a great Creative Writing Professor. She always positively encouraged my writing, and constructively criticized when needed. Her classes were always enjoyable and she is one of my favorite professors at SJSU.
Prof. Miller provided an excellent survey of personal essay writing. As a non-creative english major, this class was outside my comfort zone. I learned a great deal about the process of personal writing which in turn has brought depth to my literature criticism writing.
Professor Miller is one of my most favorite teachers at the whole university! She explains things very clearly, is very helpful to students, and has a wonderful sense of humor and a strong passion for her work and teaching. I highly recommend anyone that's interested in taking creative writing to take her class!
Professor Miller was a teacher that any student would love. She made all the materials interesting and made us motivated to work at our hardest. Because of her, I became hooked on writing non-fiction! Whatever they're paying her, it's not enough.
A LOT of pertinent reading, and the reading is actually discussed. The work load is high but very applicable and inspiring.
This professor will grade you harshly if you don't write "realistic" fiction. The last time I checked, fiction is not required to be realistic.
Professor Miller was the best English teacher I had at SJSU. We read from a number of short stories and books that were relevant and interesting. She introduced us to writers I never would have otherwise read. As long as you read the assignments and complete your papers you will do well. Don't be afraid to ask her for help!!!
Professor Miller was great! English 71 was a great introductory class for creative writing. She covered all the elements of how to produce poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. We did group work frequently, discussing our own writings and published works that exemplified aspects of creative writing we focused on that week. Great Class, Great Teacher!
This teacher was wonderful! Even though I could've kept up easily with assignments and the rest of the class, but had so many personal issues with my computer, she definitely understood where I was coming from and helped me out to pass. She's extremely organized, and really cares about her students progression in the class. She's hilarious too!
Professor Miller encouraged the class to discuss about the literature pieces with entire class, and it helped me open up the new perspectives and informed me many ways to interpret the literature by exchanging idea with the classmates. Professor Miller is helpful, and she is talented in introducing people to the world of literature.
Prof. Miller was a great teacher all around. She was very respectful to the diversity of the class and really has a lot to say about literature. She forces her students to participate in class. Her grading methods are fair and assignments are relevant to the texts.
Miller spend as much time discussing creative writing as she did pushing her political ideologies, going as far as to insinuate that during the 2004 election that if Bush was re-elected we'd all be drafted. She made it part of our grade to go watch Michael Moore's current documentary in theatres and write about it in our journals....
very quirky. but stern
Professor Miller is great! She makes even the most shy student feel confident about writing and she has a great sense of humor. I loved her class!
She is a wonderful professor. When you write papers for her class make sure they mean something to you. If you write about stuff your not actually feeling deeply about then of course your grade will reflect that. Aside from being a great professor who is knowledgeable, she is also a genuine human being. REAL.
I initially did not like her, but her advice grew on me. She doesn't deal with specifics as much as I would have liked, but she does give useful critiques. Obviously, she has a ton of experience in the subject (creative nonfiction) and it definitely shows in her teaching.I would recommend her, if you can handle criticism.
Not considering myself a creative writer, I reluctantly signed up for Prof. Miller's class. By the end of the term, I had composed a small collection of poetry one of which was published in Reed Magazine. Prof. Miller is a valuable asset to the literary community at SJSU, and a teacher who brings out the best in students.
group specific classes and a high work load depending on the group you are in
She is the best of the MFA faculty by far. She gives excellent feedback on work, way more than other instructors. She also brings in the real world of publishing and what it means to be a working writer. Some of the books we read were mediocre. She was very skillful at handling workshop. If ur in the MFA, take as many of her classes as u can.
