Her class is boring, but she really tries to explain everything to students. She is kinda funny, nice, full of passion.
she is a great prof. very funny lady. makes you work with classmates which makes the whole class participate. if you are a outspoken person, you'll do well in the class
Fun, caring
She'd tell you exactly what's gonna be on the test and she also allows you to get extra credits during the course. As long as you study the notes, then you'll definitely get an A in the class.
energetic teacher, keeps you awake hehe
she's so fun and tries to keep ur attention... her class is interesting if ure interested in chinese.. she tells u exactly wut's gonna be on the test and she does give u some work but its all relevant so no problem... !!
very nice teacher, very kind person, skool is always boring but a funny and exciting teacher makes up for that. never got bored in her class, had a great time!!!
she is good.... every chapter vocab test , mid and final.. and oral test... but, if u study 1 hour? before EACH test.. u can get A
she talks too much. she talks things that she shouldn't had to say. she's easy to give minus points to people. sentimental teacher. just remember, she's so fussy and talks unimportant stuff too much. boring.
i supposed to get an A on her class, but you know what she doesnt like me (neither do i), so instead B for me. ARGHH... if you want to get an A, make sure come to class always, and be "nice" to her.
She is GREAT! She tells stories about the characters so you can remember them easily. And we had role play and lots of chances to speak Chinese.
i think i don't dislike her. she is caring and nice, but her class is kind of not that clear. her english is soso... but still, she is a good person. btw, her tests are very detailed, u gotta study carefully and thoroughly~~
her class is okay.. but shes funny when she starts talking about other things besides chinese.. shes a good teacher
she's a great teacher!!! A small woman w/ a BIG personality. she's very funny and keeps u awake in class. she also had a thing about singing chinese songs when i took the class. if ur gonna take a chinese class, take it w/ her. i really enjoyed the class.
Nice and cool.
She is unfair.Looks down on students she dislike. Tends to favor certain students and believe it or not, she grades more harsh on students she dont like. I wrote the same answer as someone else but i got deducted for it-her exvuse:it was messy!!!!
Hard for non-Chinese students. Calls on everyone to participate in class. Nice teacher, but goes through the material kinda fast. Sometimes hard to understand. Need to study a lot because of many quizzes, tests, and you will be called on during class. Will look dumb if you do not understand subject.
She resented the fact that an African American would dare to take her class and get to see her culture's dirty laundry. However, its okay to do this to African Americans. She stated of course you're going to get an A to her Asian students. She was argumentative suspicious stubborn and implacable.
She is **** towards African Americans. She couldnt' wait to punish me for daring to take her class. She considers African Americans barbarians.she is just plain hateful, arrogant, will not listen to students like me. She talks too loud and fast. She can also be sneaky. She tried to set me up.
She does NOT know how to teach. She does not really teach in the class. All we do in the class are just discuss with classmates and watch video. She is super unclear. You have to read her mind in order to get a good grade...
That's complete B.S.! She does not single you out because of your race. As a matter of fact, she favors non-asian students! Just for being non-asain, you already have an advantage. Shes 10 times harder on asain students... which I find that unfair. She's a GREAT teacher and has a really big heart.
I'm not asian and I did well in her class. I didn't notice any favouritism. I felt we were all equal and we were there to learn to Chinese, as she was there to teach it. She is one of my favourite teachers. She is great and I will continue my Chinese studies with her!
For all of you students who think she is **** are just dumb. No wonder why you didn't do good in the class. You are probably the people who give her the bad impression that non-asian students don't do well. I am very much a white girl and I got an A in both of her classes. She is a great teacher
Pro:Easy tests Con: Unclear, favors some students over others, grades writing assignments base on what she "thinks" you deserve. Prof.Wei consider not teaching CH10 because she is so unclear about her requirements. She graded paper w/o any comments or evidence to show why u got the grade. She just grades based on what she thinks u deserve. Not reco
I cant belive anyone would have anything bad to say about her! She is one of the best teachers I have ever had. Here class is a bit hard, and she dose expect more out of certain students. But she is very excited about teaching, and she dose have a sense of humor so she will mess w/ you in class. But she is a great teacher, you need to take her clas
Dr.Wei is an okay teacher. Her lectures are not that clear, you have to pay 120% attention to her class. However, she talks lots of stories and her own experience, which are funny and helpful for understanding the text. Also, she gives out study guides for hw assignments and tests(easy as long as study). She likes students to participate.
The first couple days were cool because she went at a good learning speed. However, she upped the freakin work the 2nd and 3rd week and I was lost. She expects too much out of students and leaves the lost behind. She seems nice but really not that great of a teacher.
Good teacher ! I love to learn more about Chinese 10 from her !

A complete ******..she's unclear, unhelpful, and favors students.
she's not as bad as it seems. her test questions are all from the outlines she gives out. she grades easy on the group presentations as long as u do a nice powerpoint and keep eye contact w/ the audience.
you should take her class i recomened it don't list to the other people. almost every one in chinese 1 class want to take chinese 2 with her agian
Too easy of a class. Pass that class without much study. Mainly because I'd probably have taken Chinese lessons when I was young. Anyways, the class is easy. Based on vocabulary test, oral presentation, test, and final. No midterm. She's a bit unclear at times. But she knows her Chinese. Then again she does teach at USC.

the best prof ever
she ll drop you / your grade if you miss more than 3 of her classes.
shes ok.. quiz almost evryday, not hard if you study.. tests are ok too.. english is not very clear but shes a good teacher.. attendance is very important.. overall good teacher.. i recommend her.
Prof. Wei is not a hard teacher but her lectures always seem like she is being rushed and there is not enough time for everything. At times the class was boring but Wei is not a very hard grader.
Professor Cathy is a very traditional Chinese teacher. She cares about the attendence. Tests are not that hard as long as you study the study guide. Final is the sum of prior tests. Two essays for the whole semester and one powerpoints project. The cool thing in the test is that she would tell you the essay questions before the tests!
She is a very nice professor and getting an A in her class is very easy because she tells you exactly what will be on the test.Although her instruction may sometimes seems vague, but you should understand her if you pay attention. And she's very helpful if you ask questions.
I totally loved her class. She has a quirky sense of humor. She moves fast in her lessons. Pay attention because she might call on you. Mess up and she will make fun of you. There was this poor guy in our class who had accidentally pronounced a word wrong. Instead of telling her that he had a question he ended up asking her if he could kiss her.LOL
best teacher ever .
She is probably the best chinese teacher that I've ever had. I've taken 3 years of chinese in high school, clarity sucks. Ms. Wei's teaching is better. She is also really nice, with cute humor. It's easy if you study! I totally recommend this teacher for the Chinese American's who want to learn mandarin. :)
A very traditional chinese teacher. The powerpoint project is extremely important. She will like you if you do good on it. Tests are okay, straight forward from the study guide, just study. Overall, she is a nice teacher, fair grader, interesting lecture, but always very rush.
Great teacher. Highly recommended
I took her for chinese 10 and it was an easy A. tests are based off the book and notes, so just review them prior to the test and you'll be fine. powerpoint is worth a lot in that class, so you better do a good job. overall, she is a nice teacher and you'll learn
Coolest teacher ever, i have taken her Chinese 1 before, and get an easy A.Interesting lecture. willing to teach, and very helpful. I learn a lot in her class. Study the hw, then you will be fine on the tests.
Great professor especially in the area of Chinese as a language! I recommend her, she is funny and workload is not much, you have a quiz on the characters most of the days you meet. She is very clear on grammar and etc. take her for Chinese!!
I love this professor's teaching method. It really works. Well, maybe; her CHNSE1 was really easy. I look forward to her the next course with her.
She keeps the class really fun and lighthearted, and she manages to teach Chinese culture well alongside grammar and vocabulary.
I really enjoyed Wei's class, she was very helpful and the class was very interactive. You never know when she'll call on you, so pay attention!
Fun Prof. :] unlike other pcc courses, must work (study and do hw) # of hours to units of class. if u want an a, 5 unit = at least 5 hours of study/hw per week.
straight forward teacher. do the work pass the class. expect vocab tests once or twice a week, end of chapter tests to make sure you know what you learned, midterm & final that are summed up from the chapters. overall easy if you put in effort.
She's ok. But, she means everything she says. She has an interesting sense of humor. Also, she has a Taiwanese background. In Taiwan, in the old days, the teacher talks, the students just shut up and listen, no questions. Keep that in mind. Other than that, she knows what she's talking about and unless necessary, don't ask too many questions.
Prof Cathy Wei is the nicest and coolest professor ever!! 2 tests, 2 writing,1 quiz, 1 presentation, and participation. this class is very easy but u gotta review what she lectures and her questions in order to ACE the tests! this class is fun and interesting! the presentation is easy u get to choose ur own topic. TAKE HER! I LOVE HER n this class
Fair grading system, but power trips a lot
BEST TEACHER EVER! so funny, and cool, and smart, and intelligent, and elegant, and.. um.. cute=]. SUPER NICE, well don't be a fkn **** and expect her to be super nice to you, if you want to participate in class or want to get picked on the most, sit right in her face:), exactly what i did. LOVE HER, i wish shes teaching chn 3 4 whatever, ill take
Sigh...what to say. She's nice and pretty lenient on grading, but she is really not qualified to teach this class. She is EXTREMELY hard to understand. What should have been my easiest class become my most frustrating one. Her lectures were unimaginably boring and uninspired. It's an easy class, but god...it might not be worth your sanity.
Funniest and cutest teacher ever! Love the way she teaches and she's really funny! Take her!!!
She's amazing. Total HS style of teaching, really involved, totally fobby, and really awesome. She even gives out free food. I learned a lot, more than I expected, and it wasn't even remotely boring. Just don't be the quiet kid that sits in class not participating. -_-" Remember, it is a languages class. The more you speak up, the faster you learn.
This is a fairly easy class for anyone to pass. All you need to do is dedicate some time to study for easy quizzes and tests after every chapter. If you need to clarify something, Dr. Wei will be more than happy to clarify it for you. Dr. Wei is one of the most passionate and fun professors I've had at PCC. Take her! :)
Pretty good professor.
She is a fun teacher but I think she is the hardest one compared to the other chinese teachers. Also, she does not give any extra credits.
She is very easy if you pay attention and dedicate time to study. She is not always clear but this was one of my fav. Class.. I payed attentio and studied at home. This class would of been easier if i didnt have a daughter or a job..so if you dnt have any resposibilities this class will be a piece of cake:)
PCC has great language teachers, Cathy Wei is not one of these. Her spoken English grammar & syntax are poor, making her explanations difficult to understand. She is frequently disorganized, does not encourage students to do more than what is required, & she belittles what students do know. One of the poorest teachers I've ever had.
Challenging professor but worth taking! teaches well and pushes you to learn. 10-item vocab quizzes every chapter. she reviews before tests and gives hints. do your homework. it's very helpful and not hard anyway. practice & remember vocabulary words. buy workbook and textbook. you'll definitely learn how to speak and read chinese after the course.
She challenges you to learn chinese. For sure, you definitely learn a lot. very outgoing, very helpful. 10-item vocab quizzes every chapter. do your homework. it's very helpful, does not take a lot of time and not hard anyway. practicing & remembering all the vocabulary words are time-consuming but are very important for you to pass.
she is really nice and helpful, but if you are taking more than three classes i wont recommend you to take her class because her class takes a lot of time to practice and to learn the vocab words. almost every other day you will have a quiz with 10 words and it can be really overwhelming, so be ready!
Laoshi is extremely nice, helpful, and a lenient grader. There is a lot to memorize in characters and pinyin so it's not an easy course, however you will learn quite a bit. It's important to spend time practicing outside the classroom if you want to do well.
She is energetic and tries to make class fun (though she doesn't always succeed). There is lots of food involved! The class is pretty easy overall, but she is not the best at explaining grammatical concepts. You don't have many choices for Chin 2 professors, so you can't go wrong with her.
Super easy and very helpful. must study for quizzes and memorize the characters but of course that is a given. her tests are very simple and she is a generous grader.
Hated her style of teaching. The lecture was ok but the quizzes were useless. Everyone just tried to memorize the vocab on the day of and tried to pass the quiz. She does these Sentences, everyone waits in line to say their sentence when class ends and it takes forever! Like there's a long line and I need to go to my next class! Zoe Wu is better!!!
She is such a sweet heart. It is very obvious that wants the best for your future and, although she nags, it is in a motherly way. She made me want to continue learning Chinese. We need more passionate and loving professors like her.
Awesome teacher!! I learned so much in the class!!! My chinese improved so much in 6 weeks!! Highly recommended
You can definitely take her class and pass. Just do the HOMEWORK!! the tests are based off the homework. Do the homework and you'll be fine. She's pretty funny and she brings FOOD!!! idk if thats just because she taught a night class but OMG FOOD. PARTICIPATION hella bumps up your grade too!! Good luck!
She is the best mandarin teacher that I've taken. I felt that her lectures and explanations of the texts and grammar structures were easier to understand than in other classes. She really tries to help non native speakers. Be sure to participate in class and do your homework because the points really add up. She is very friendly and funny.
Participate in class and do your homework because the points really add up. Stay off your phone, she will call you out. She really tries to help her students, and provided EC upon request. Her lectures are very useful, but this class is definitely difficult. She is the best mandarin teacher that I've taken and one of my favorite PCC teachers.
Professor Wei is someone who encourages you to participate and enthusiastic in teaching students Chinese. I learned a lot from her. She is hilarious and gives extra credit, so take advantage of it! I would definitely take her again.
She's okay. For the most part, she's nice, but there were times when she contradicted herself and then blamed the class. I found that to be annoying. She makes everyone talk and participate in her class, but that's pretty essential when it comes to learning a new language. She likes to share food very often.
Strict on attendance. Quizzes on vocabulary almost every class, so be on time. Tests are basically straight from the vocabulary and sentence structures discussed during lecture. You need to follow her instructions since she was strict on this. One field trip to the Huntington Garden. Not super easy, but A is guaranteed if you put a little effort.
This is her first year teaching Chinese 3 and in my opinion, she's a great teacher, she has her own sense of humor and that's what I like about her. She's a little picky on attendance but just be on time. It's not that hard. Her class isn't too hard to get an A. Put in a little effort and you'll be fine.
Professor Wei is very caring and every time you meet there will be a test, mainly about characters, English meaning, and pinyin. In the test, she provides hints and they are free points. She is willing to reschedule tests if something else is required to do. She doesn't want to overwhelm the students. You do role plays, remembering Chinese dialogue
Cathy completely de-mystifies learning Chinese. She is funny and patient. Probably the best thing is the way she takes all pressure and embarrassment out of publicly speaking a new language. Even if you bomb the oral portions, she's gentle and enthusiastic and there's never an awkward pause as she corrects you and lets you try again. Blown away.
Very nice in the beginning She becomes like a crazy rude woman after the drop/Withdrawal day passes. She acts like a dictator in the classroom. She often yells and screams at students. I have no idea how she became an instructor at Pasadena College. She should not be treating her students this way.
Wei Laoshi is an incredible teacher. She is really blunt and funny (I could see how some people could interpret it as 'rudeness' but she's always laughing when she teases students). Participation is a must. She goes really in-depth with her lectures and also provides cultural anecdotes and fun activities, too. I highly recommend taking her class!
Really rude teacher, tries to act friendly but is very passive aggressive and bothers everyone about anything that doesn't go her way. Very set on the way she does work
I would take her class if she teach advanced Chinese cause I've taken 2 of her classes and they are totally great as I all get A. She's funny in Asian style but I don't get why people keep saying that she's rude. She even offers foods in in-person class. Not a hard grader even I submitted late assignments a lot.
The reviews about Cathy being rude is true. If you email her a question about an assignment she'll respond very harshly and sarcastically. Not professional at all and is very passive-aggressive. Online course was highly unorganized and hard to know what assignments were due at what time. Better off taking another professor without these issues.
Extremely rude. Many people in the comments justifying her behavior by saying she teaches "the Chinese way", but this not true. I have taken Chinese classes previously, but they aren't as rude as her. She belittles students in class and her instructions/due dates are unclear. Bad at using online tech like Canvas/Zoom too, and blames it on students.
The Professor is very rude and passive aggressive. When things do not go her way she does belittle students. I would not take this Professor ever again. Be careful. And read others comments before hand.
Today is the last day of this class, and I like her class. She's a very nice teacher and very kind. Make sure you don't finish work late, otherwise you'll get a late penalty. I personally dislike the late penalty because I'm taking dual enrollment and I sometimes forget that I have homework in this class, and then I got late when I see the work.
Professor Wei was one of the best teacher's I have ever had! She is very clear about what she expects, & she has faith that each of her students can get there! Lot's of homework, but if organized, you'll be fine! Unlike the untrue comments say, she is super nice, very organized, & definitely a teacher - & class - I would strongly recommend taking!!
She often calls out students during class. Also very strict about syntax, and even as a heritage speaker, this class was pretty hard. Lectures will mostly be in Simplified Chinese, however, test questions include both Simplified and Traditional characters. Each week's homework assignment took me about 3-4 hours to complete... DON'T FALL BEHIND!!
Professor Cathy Wei is an extremely knowledgeable instructor. Attendance is mandatory, but it is well worth it in the end because you learn so much. I would love for her to be my Chinese professor all through the program. She is the best. I would positively recommend you taking her class if you ever get a chance - you would not regret it.
Insanely boring lectures, not at all tech-savvy, condescending, will humiliate you for getting things wrong. Participation is 10% of grade. Workload is not bad but class is too hard for complete beginner Chinese learners. My Chinese is at a solid HSK 2 level and I was struggling by the end of the semester. Fast-paced.
