very detailed, easy to understand, works with students not against them
Lets you use notes on the tests and quizzes!!!
gives us answers on quizzes, dresses cool
very very very sexy
USE NOTES ON TESTS! YAY!
She's the bomb-diggity. She really helped me out.
very unhelpful
Very helpful and very forgiving.
Dr. Whitlock was the first math teacher I ever had that made any sense to me. She's very approachable and makes examples very real-life. and non-scary. She helped me get much more comfortable with algebra and years later I'm the one who helps other students. Who would have guessed...
She could teach this class to a fifth grader. She just explains things that well. Take her for a math class if you can. I wish I had taken her for calculus.
Fresh off the farm, Whitlock is a safe bet. She moves at a reasonable pace, gives a good, friendly lecture, and knows that most of the students in the class are there because of a major/gen. ed. requirement. Still, the weekly quizzes get old--fast. Take her if you need the credit and don't mind the B or the C on your GPA.
Lovely prof. Really nice and always willing to help outside of class. Knows what she's talking about. Fairly laid back, so is her grading. All around great prof.
This class was really easy and the everything was straight forward. Shes a good teacher if you do not understand the material, but the class is boring.
Had her for Humanities 414. She was obviously out of her league and had no business being in a humanities classroom. I did well on everything but I was surprised at the end to get a C. This was because she approved my final essay topic but because she personally disagreed with the subject matter. She let her own feelings cloud her objectiveness.
I took prof witlock for hum 414 and truly enjoyed the class. she treated us fairly and as equals. she is honest and facilitates exellent class discussions. a very fair grader and appears to enjoy teaching this humanities coarse. she is highly open minded in regards to alternative views and topics.
GREAT professor. Really teaches well and makes sure everything is understood. She teaches the class at a good pace, grades fairly, and is very personable. She always gives help if you ask. I actually became interested in math through her class (had always been bored/hated it in the past.)
She is incredible! She will help you whenever you need it, makes class fun, the class isn't easy, but she is still an incredible professor, and really works hard to make you understand. She also lets you have a "cheat sheet" for tests.
She give me a B in the class, and she was never helpful.
Very cool professor. Always in a good mood, never mean to students. She is relatively easy, but expects you to participate and learn the material. Best introductory math teacher in UNCA. Remember she does not have a ph.D., so she does not teach upper level math courses. She is also really cool person and has a life outside of math - which is good!
Great! Awesome teacher and a pretty easy class!
I am a senior and I put off Calculus because I hate math, but this class was made enjoyable and I owe it ALL to Whitlock. She is GREAT! One of the BEST teachers I've ever had, maybe even THE BEST!
She's a great teacher. Always helpful and in a positive mood. The online homework is really easy. She allows you to make cheat sheets for the tests. Make that cheat sheet. You cannot memorize all the formulas in your head.
Great Professor. Extremely clear, organized, and helpful. Made me appreciate math for the first time. If you stay on top of your homework, the class shouldn't be too bad. Tests are always types of problems you have already covered at least once and are representative.
Does not live up to others comments, plays favorites
She's probably the best math teacher I've ever had...every single statistic concept is broken down to a level that you can easily understand it, and her love of teaching shines through in every class period. If you have the chance to take Statistics with her, DO IT. You'll be so very glad you did.
Puts on a show of being nice. Point out a mistake however, and her dark side shows. If you dare question her she will quickly become biased and vengeful.
She might be a good math teacher, but she's terrible with humanities. She doesn't care about views/opinions that are outside her own and shows no interest in anything remotely different from her own world. Don't take for humanities unless you want an easy A... and a mind-numbing class.
I thought she was a wonderful teacher. If you show up to class everyday, it is an easy class. She gives great notes and allows a sheet on every test with any information you want to have (this was amazing) I highly recommend her!
I LOVE this teacher! She's willing to help you understand anything! And, she made me love math! TAKE HER!
Seemed arrogant and biased against students in general. Wold recommend taking 185 with someone else.
Does not seem to interact well with non-traditional students. If you are non-traditional take someone else.
I loved her! She is an amazing teacher she helps you with anything you need. All you need do is attend the class. The Quizes are super easy you can have a cheat sheet and if you do the HW you'll be fine
TAKE MS WHITLOCK! SHE IS AWESOME! MADE CLASS EASY, NOT TOO INTENSE. WE WERE ALLOWED TO USE FORMULA SHEETS ON THE TESTS! TAKE MS WHITLOCK
I absolutely love Professor Whitlock. She is very organized and knows what she is teaching. She lets you use formula sheets which in my opinion helped me learn. Go to class, take good notes and you are all set.
Love this professor takes her time going over the material and really helps get the students involved.
She is funny and seems cool and fair, unless... who knows. Her grading system is a mystery and often unfair in comparison with identical work of other students. She can be confusing. Grading is a mystery if you want to go over and recalculate. Agree with another comment, If you not traditional or something else- watch out.
Professor Whitlock is the best math teacher I have ever had. She is super nice, easy to understand, helpful, and great at teaching Statistics. She is a superior teacher!
Cathy is a great math professor. I had her for calculus 1 and she was very clear and easy to understand. She keeps the class involved through active participation and she is always willing to take a moment and answer questions before moving on if someone is confused or stuck. She definitely made calculus enjoyable!
She is a very interesting teacher, if you show that you are trying and ask for help she will assist you in any way. She can be biased but just be nice to her and you're good, I highly recommend taking her class.
While she may be a Math professor, she does a great job with Humanities. I wish she taught 414 because I would def take her. She makes the class interesting and we have a lot of interesting, discussions. She does tend to show some biases toward feminists and those that may not agree with Obama, but not so much that it is an issue, just noticeable.
By far the best math teacher I have ever had- she is clear as well as able to explain material to even the least math savvy individual. I highly suggest taking a course by her! Both her Statistics and Calculus courses are incredible!
I love her, though I never had her for math. She was my advisor and I had her for a freshmen colloquium called Honeybees and Humans (Honors). She's such a cool and aproachable person. Very quirky and pleasant to be around. Genuinely cared about our class.
Cathy is a great math professor. She is funny and is very clear in her directions and teachings. She makes even a lit major want to learn about calculus.
Cathy is amazing - she makes calc very easy and fun, and is always willing to help you out. Even if you get a bad test grade, you will probably pass. She teaches clearly and effectively, with a personality that is always enjoyable. If you can get into her section, take it! I personally don't like math textbooks, so I didn't even buy it + I was fine
Vector Calculus seems like a boring course before you even know what you're getting into. But Cathy makes it fun and very easy to understand. She is a very personable person and always comes into class with a smile on her face. Easily the best college calculus professor I've had.
Whitlock is awesome and definitely cares about the course material. She gives extracredit and is passionate about calc 2. She makes calc 2 as easy as it possibly can be, and it's still hard. Mathlab is helpful too, the only thing is that kinda sucks is that she gives mymathlab homework often. Pearson sucks, math lab at unca is helpful tho- GO TO IT
Whitlock's 178 on Honeybees is so much fun. She is so passionate about bees, which makes her teaching style interesting and engaging. We do a lot of different hands-on activities, like processing honey and making lip balm. I said easy A, but that's only if you come to class, pay attention, and take good notes. I recommend this class.
I've had Professor Whitlock for Calc 1, Calc 3, and Stat 185. I thoroughly enjoyed every class, and put off taking stat so I could take it with her. I always learn a ton from her. She's high-energy, so her classes are a lot of fun. As long as you work hard and pay attention, you will do fine.
Bless Cathy Whitlock. I declared a math major because I wanted to take my classes with her. She's fun and engaging and so kind. She remembers all of her students. I took calc 3 with her over the summer and I actually looked forward to going to class. I have taken stat185/calc1/calc3 with her so far.
She is a great teacher. It is easy to tell that she really enjoys her job which can be rare.
Whitlock is an amazing professor. I had her over the summer and she was very helpful and made everything easy. This is a lot for me considering I am not great at math at all but I took the course as a part of the liberal arts core requirement.
She is an awesome person and a great lecturer! Her class and quizzes are really straightforward, but the exams are incredibly difficult! No curve either. If math isn't your strong suit, you better spend hours studying and looking at the practice test because the exams are HARD!
For the 178 Honey Bees and Humans she let our tests be open note. I have not taken a math class with her yet but will next semester. I loved her so much that I wanted to have a class with her again.
Professor Whitlock was such a sweet and funny lady. I had her for Honeybees and Humans and she always made things so interesting and let us do a lot of hands on projects.
I love her. She is savage. EX/ Student: "I was destined to be right." Cathy: "No you weren't." Homework is optional. Do suggest doing it though, it is helpful. She works with you if you are stressed, have work, or are confused.
She is literally one one of the nicest professors I've ever had. I absolutely loved her for Calc 2 and I hope I can take another class with her. She is always willing to take a moment to explain things clearly if someone doesn't understand the material.
Shes okay. Not great for my personality. Shes nice, but a bit out there. Completely nice, but select personality.
I'd give her a solid 4.5 only docking because every once and a while, a test/quiz question is a little out of left field for what youve been studying. Very acceptabl and there are no stupid questions with her. Always willing to help those who ask for it (that means you have to ask) and couldnt be more clear on what is expected. Extra credit chance
Fantastic professor. She's super passionate about math. Lectures are extremely organized and palatable for the content being so difficult. Lots of helpful non-mandatory homework. Lots of in class examples primarily from the textbook, so it is important to attend class regularly. Great for those not-so-math-inclined students!
She was fantastic. I cannot math. at all. She made statistics super easy to comprehend and I ended up making a really good grade. If you miss a class you can just go to her office hours and she'll explain everything. You can also choose to do homework for credit or not do it. I highly recommend, but her lectures can get a little boring sometimes.
Professor Whitlock has a great personality and she cares about you understanding the criteria and succeeding. If I could I would take her again just for the jokes.
She's just great, class is too.
She is a fun person and okay teacher. She will take points off though on tests even if you get the answer right. This is extremely frustrating. She is very picky about showing your work. Quite a tough grader. Be prepared.
AMAZING Professor. Yes, there's lots of tests - it's Calculus. You get better by practicing. She is not a tough grader, she gives partial credit! Of course you need to show your work. If you go to class, do your hw, and get help you will get an A or B.
Professor Whitlock is probably my favorite math professor ever had. She was very clear and gave lots of examples in class and provided lots of practice materials. There is homework due every class which is expected of any math course. Practice and repetition is key. There are about 5 tests throughout the semester, be sure to study for them!
Dr. Whitlock is one of the sweetest people on the planet! She is so easy to talk to, and she makes sure that her students are well prepared for the tests. She's very thorough with her teaching and provides numerous examples on each topic. If need be, she is willing to push back due dates for students if we don't feel prepared enough for tests.
Cathy's MATH 191 course was amazing. She was always in a good mood and radiating positivity. 10/10 recommend - and I'm not one who likes math!
Just a stellar math teacher. Struggled a bit with the online format, but who can handle a bunch of groggy Zoom students during 8AM Calc II? She cares greatly for your learning and for the content itself, and she'll go through great pains to answer any questions you have--but you've gotta pay attention. The most (and only) fun you'll have at 8AM.
Professor Whitlock is seriously the best math professor I have ever had and she makes calculus super easy. I cannot emphasize enough what a wonderful human being and teacher she is. :)
Whitlock is the best teacher I have ever had and I am not even a math major. She is entertaining and repetitive , things that make concepts and equations stick. She is also a slower pace so you have the ability to absorb what she is teaching. She has different grading scales so she will give you the one where it benefits you the most! TAKE HER!!
I had a great time taking Calculus with Professor Whitlock. She was really funny, and made the challenging course really manageable. There's optional homework on definite that really helped me feel confident when I came into class. I would never want to take math with another professor!
Very good Professor, knows her stuff!
Took fys humans and honeybees and it was amazing. got to visit the beehives, collect honey, make chapstick from the beeswax. We learned all about honeybees, other bees, and other pollinators. very fun fys and she is so kind and easy going and it was a very easy class to get a good grade in
Cathy was my professor for my First Year Seminar and we focused on Honeybees. I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS FYS ENOUGH. We had multiple opportunities to have a 'hands on' experience with honeybees on campus! We bottled the campus bees honey and made beeswax chapstick. The actual classwork and homework was minimal but be prepared to talk to your neighbors
She is the best! She let us have one page of notes for our tests which made getting a good grade super achievable. She is super nice, caring and available for communication. She was organized and great at putting in grades quickly as well as giving good feedback There were a lot of assignments and tests, but that's kinda standard for a math course.
Literally the best, would recommend for anyone
The BEST professor. I couldn't recommend her enough. Attendance is mandatory. You are allowed front/back full notebook paper of cheat sheet for every quiz. The only tests are your midterm and final. 1 cheat sheet on midterm and 2 sheets on the final. Homework is every class, but unlimited attempts. Take her class if you can!!!
Knows and understands what she's talking about and you can tell. Very enthusiastic, but sometimes she would make me feel stupid when I had a question. She's okay, on the better side of the math professors I've had. I would recommend her.
Prof Whitlock is amazing, even as someone who doesn't enjoy math. She taught the content well and reserved the beginning of class for asking questions about the homework (which has unlimited attempts!). Don't get into a habit of skipping class, because things can get confusing fast if you do. Loved her class!
Brought a great attitude to our 8 a.m. class that made the math much more bearable.
As a person who HATES math, she made the class bearable. Short homework quizzes on what you learned in class everyday, 10 questions max. She allows you to leave class once she is done lecturing, but encourages students to stay in case they need help with the homework. You are allowed a full front and back "cheat sheet" for exams.
Love love loveddd Cathy. This class was very easy and very easy to follow along with. There were little quizzes in every class, but they can easily be done in five to ten minutes. Cathy was super fun, and she was super sweet, and it was easy to feel comfortable in her classroom.
MY FAVORITE PROFESSOR EVER I LOVE HER!!!!!
I absolutely LOVED this professor. I struggle a lot in math and definitely would have failed without her. She made lecture entertaining and educational, connecting to larger aspects while still preparing us for the tests. I don't test well in math, so to get C or higher was amazing. Homework was very light and we had all the resources to study.
Cathy Whitlock is, without a doubt, the best math teacher I have ever had. She is extremely patient and teaches math in a way that I could understand using practice problems to teach the material and guiding us through it. If you have questions, ask. She's a professor who won't make you feel stupid no matter what. Love her
