I have never had an intriguing class, like this she is helpful, but the six weeks course as bad because everything was so rushed. She tried so props to her. She gives an interesting aura to English she loves it nice class
Professor Gil was very helpful and clear during her classes and makes the effort to make sure everyones on track with a one on one meeting with her in the middle of the course.
Such an inspiration as a professor. She really cares for her students and will help long as she sees you're willing to do the work. She doesn't accept late work so be sure to turn everything in on time. Very passionate about teaching. Totally enjoyed her class.
Probably the best teacher I have ever had. She teaches English 2 in a way that makes you wish you had class everyday. Class is enjoyable, fun, and overall you learn a lot. Would recommend this class to anyone who wants a teacher that enjoys what she does and who is a master in what she does!!!
Best teacher I've had. Genuinely passionate about teaching English. Always willing to help. Instead of giving highly structured prompts she really encourages her students expand their minds and gives freedom in writing assignments. It is nice to have a teacher who is so authentic. I gained a new liking for poetry and writing from her class!
She's one of the professors who will really cares about her students. She is willing to help, support, and understand her students to be successful in their academic goals. Getting an A will be guaranteed, if you do all the works and hws as you told to do on time. She's very reasonable and enthusiastic professor. I will def. take her for ENGL 2.
She is one of the rare professor who will actually care about her students and always willing to help, support, and understand them. Her class mostly designed for students and teacher discussion based lectures. If you do all the assignments and homeworks which you are mandatory to do it on time, you will get an A. I will def. take her for ENG 2.
To take her class is to love her & walk away with lessons you can actually apply to life. One of the very few who takes the time to personally learn your situation inside & outside of class. She is then able to uniquely help you understand based on your strong areas, & your weak areas. Wants you to pass and become successful. with her, you will.
She was very enthusiastic about teaching. She communicates with students very much. Sometime, she might give you unclear assignments, but there's no answer in all of assignments. Everything will be the answer, just be creative writer. just enjoy the class, and participate in discussion. As it is eng2, be a creative and critical writer. u'll be good
Professor Gil is the best professor I've ever had. Plan on taking her again soon. I would recommend that anyone takes her class. So caring, and just an awesome human being!!
NICEST MOST CARING PROFESSOR EVER! She literally offers us candy in class. She makes the class fun and you actually get to know the people in it well. ALWAYS laugh at her jokes! Seriously. Class is however, very confusing and I'm not sure how much I learned. But she is still one of the nicest teachers I've ever had. She's truly a friend. Easy A.
I have grown immensely from her open, yet professional teach style. I used to despise English, but she allows her students to find passion in writing by not forcing a strict regiment upon them. The syllabus is slightly confusing, but she is helpful in clarifying any loose-ends. It isn't easy but extremely rewarding. Wonderful all-around experience.
She is the best professor I have had in SMC. She is organized and very clear about the work she assigns. Attendance is a must and all work should be completed on time. she alsi gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. stay on task and you will get an A that you have to work for.
My favorite teacher at SMC. She is hilarious, and makes the lessons funny and interesting. Most of your grade is based off a 25 pg portfolio due at the end of the semester. It may sound intimidating, but it's not. It's just a 10 pg research paper and a collection of polished essays and a speech from earlier in the semester. An easy A. I love her.
By far one the best English classes I have ever taken. She is one of the greats. In a world where you can learn anything from a google search she makes the classroom experience relevant again.
She is talented in cultivating incisive thinkers. I attended English 1 class in Santa Monica College, and it was the best I've ever taken. Her class was well organized enough to cover every part of writing and critical thinking. Most of all, I have to say I really enjoyed her class!
I think she is the most helpful teacher that I have taken so far. If you want to study a lot under nice professor, I take her class. You will learn a lot about English
Prof Gil is the sweetest person ever! She loves teaching and is so passionate about it. She may be unclear of her assignment, but don't be afraid to ask questions. She'll literally go out of her way to try and help you and make sure you understand. Your grade is ultimately the portfolio due at the end of semester. Just don't slack off on drafts!
She is different with other English 1 teacher, she gives her students freedom to express what they want to write . Class focus on discussions, no tests . A lot of writing , but you will work for your grade. Work hard , do research and show your effort - you will get an A. I'm a second language speaker and I make it.
Martinez-Gil is such a sweet teacher. Take her class! She is a great teacher and is willing to help you if you need it.
TAKE HER CLASS. YOU WONT REGRET IT!!!!!
she is a very nice professor. Knowledgeable & helpful. Care about her students. Take her
Professor Martinez is extremely fond of Literature. She knows the content well and does an excellent job teaching it. On the contrary, she can be unclear and confusing with assignments, which is why a student must ask questions and communicate with her constantly. Consitent effort and quality is expected.
She is an amazing Professor. Trust me you want to take her! She is very willing to help and will reply to your emails asap. She loves literature and her positive attitude is phenomenal. I absolutely loved her. Will wait to take her for English 2.
She is a great professor! The class is great, you will definitely learn a lot! Be ready to work! You definitely won't regret taking the class.
Easiest class I've ever taken. The problem is you don't learn anything. Her teaching method is ridiculous as it is best suited for a kindergarten class. Take for an ez A. Take someone else if u want to learn critical analysis.
I took Profe's class for two semesters, and to be honest you get what you put into to the class. If you want to half ass the class don't bother enrolling, you will need to work. She is forgiving but don't always count on it. Easily the most concerned teacher on campus, don't join if you're not an active learner. She is very helpful if you're there
Professor Martinez-Gil is an inspiration, to all students from all walks of life. She strives to make every student a better writer and have an extraordinary understanding of rhetoric of the English language. I can gladly say she is the best professor I have ever had and she will go out of her way to help you with any assignment. Excellent Teacher!
Sit around people who seem cool, they will be your group until the end of the semester. Do the reading ahead, please. Participate on ecompanion. Do extra credit assignments. Work on your essay way before its due, you will have along time to do it. She expects you to know how to right so be careful. Have a clear thesis, use sources, and have fun yal
Simply the best take her you won't regret it!!!
Her lectures are long and boring but mostly confusing I wont get this class if I was you. I think the only way you will pass is if you become the teachers pet and laugh at everything she says.
Professor Gil is hands down the best professor I have ever had. If you open yourself up to her ideas and unique teaching methods you will learn so much about yourself and even life in general. She will bring out the absolute best in you if you let her. Incredibly inspirational and very helpful. Take her and engage in class, you will not regret it.
Prof. Martinez is one of the best teachers at SMC. Although her teaching style isn't typical, it is intriguing , fun, and inspirational. I not only learned how to write an essay but I received multiple life lessons that I will cherish forever. It is a class that requires you to think for yourself. Wish I could write more! Highly recommend.
I could never have enough space to describe the life changing experience she provides. Profe is kind, funny, smart, talented. Took her for two classes, and although I might have forgotten the syllabus @ this point, I can ASSURE YOU that for the rest of your academic and professional life her lessons will be in the back of your mind to guide you.
Clearly a fun class that allows students to show creativity in its course. Masterworks and midterm is overall easy to follow and classes are made to build upon how to make a good essay at end. End assignment is about 15-20 pages built from beginning to end of semester
Literally the best professor ever at SMC! At first she may come of as hard and a lot of work but if you work on your papers throughout the entire semester you will be good. The final is basically all your papers. Make sure to send in your paper for feedback from her because it helps and you will get an A if you do. If she is available take her!
Amazing OVERALL!! Great spirit and great human being in general. Her class is very informative. Taking her again for Engl 1 amd then Engl 2. She's THAT great!!
One of my fave profs ever!! She'll try her best to help you through any confusion/tough spot you have. You have to do all of the homework and try to improve on essays, and do the reading, but it's still a super fun class!! She's hilarious, has fun anecdotes, and the group work helps out a lot more than you'd think!! Highly recommend her!
Wonderful woman, she has high expectations of you but she will do everything she can to help you. So warm, lovely and kind. LOVELY!
Profe is the most inspirational, caring & passionate. She is one of the few professors that actually cares about their students & about what you take from the class, not just an assignement but rather how you can take what you learn and apply it to life. Her classes are life changing. Lectures are amazing & interactive!
Profe is the most incredible professor I have ever had at SMC, the kind of educator you remember for many years to come. Her criteria is clear and her workload is very reasonable, she truly cares for her students and creates a fun atmosphere full of discussion, rather than mundane, teacher focused lectures. Don't miss out on such a unique class.
Profe is amazing. She cares about her students a lot ! As long as you put in the effort and participate in class, it's not hard to get an A.
Profe is the standard for college education. She sees potential in everyone, and will draw every ounce of it out of you. Her teaching methodology will inspire you to rise to the occasion, and improve your skill in academia. She expects you to strive for excellence, & will do everything possible to guide you towards your best work. No one better!!!
Profe is absolutely wonderful. Her love of English and Latin American literature is infectious. She's enthusiastic, extremely supportive, communicative and inspiring. She brings out the best in everyone.
I learned a lot from this class. Profe inspired us to have our own voices and be critical thinking and writing. She encouraged me to be confident as an international student. My English has been improved dramatically through writing blogs, preparing group presentations, writing essays and so on. It was quite useful and I love this class.
You will love English and love her quirky ways really quick. She is just a great teacher and nice human being.
hard but faire, supportive, funny and makes sure you understand the material respect her she will earn it from you and shes super nice!
CLASS SUMMARY: 10 small HW assignments: 1 blog review every week, it's literally half a page FINAL/GENREWORKS PORTFOLIO: She gives u 2 choices Option 1: she will let u write 1 really long paper on a topic of ur choice (9-11 pg) Option 2: she will let u write 2 smaller papers with each having a different topic, 2 essays that r 4-5 pages each
Profé refuses to lower her expectations of her students which is a real blessing in disguise. I came out of the class with an immense respect of the writing process and for her as a mentor, professional, and person. Dont take her class for grantedyoull be robbing yourself of the opportunity to grow as a student and as an adult
Simply the best take her you won't regret it!!! She says u need to buy the textbook but in reality, u rly dnt bc there is an online version for free. GOOD LUCK
She is very nice, however, I felt like I was in middle school, not college level. Perhaps because it was only a 6 week course, but I really didn't learn anything either. You also must show up every day, because you are graded on attendance. She's an extremely slow grader. Watch what you say, she's kinda offended by a lot.
Prof Gil is cheerful but she managed to make this scholars class extremely aggravating. The coursework blog posts, a group project, and a 20 pg final project was not hard at all BUT she managed to make it all difficult by not explaining assignments. She can be really impolite to some students especially when they ask questions for clarification
She was a great professor. Very passionate about english, and empathetic with students who did not enjoy the subject (you still have to work for it though, so don't take adv and slack off). Lots of new readings, discussions, group projects, a movie. Her lectures would sometimes drag, but were very moving and informative nonetheless. I recommend!
Attendance is important for Professor Gil as her Classes are small and she gets to know everyone. She is not afraid to call you out if you do something wrong, but I would still recommend taking her as she know how to help you grow as a writer. The text book is on canvas and the workload is reasonable. Do not be intimidated at her 20 page syllabus.
Very professional and knowledgeable professor. Classes work as tertulias where students participate in group discussions, sharing their thoughts on the material read. Professor is very respectful and open to students' feedback. She reviews written projects very quickly along with feedback. Fun class, student-centered with an engaging professor.
Lectures and lessons are disorganized. Sort of rude, unnecessarily calling students out for human mistakes which made the learning setting pretty uncomfortable. Asking for help was hard as she often interrupted before a student could fully explain. Work load is pretty manageable and you can easily get an A w a bit of effort.
Profe was one of the most special and thoughtful people I have ever met throughout my college experience. She is not only a good teacher but also a person who cares about the future of her students. She holds her classes in a way that leads us to think and always makes sure that every one is comfortable and understanding her thoughtful lectures.
Through group discussions and projects, students often present course material and evidence in support of their analyses. This format creates a dynamic and interactive experience. Professor is helpful, fair, and passionate. Her enthusiasm, knowledge in lectures, and personal feedback made me truly appreciate the process of writing and literature.
Funny but serious, passionate therefore tough to play. Absolutely have to try, show improvement if you want her to lighten up on you. There's always hw BUT it's quick reads & easy however her directions aren't always clear ask questions, you work in groups always. 2 essays, 2 letters, no tests, lectures, late work pass if exceptional, PARITCIPATE!!
A true asset to the Literature Department! DON'T be fooled by first time impressions. She is extremely caring and charasmatic. take the time to know her and meet with her one-on-one. She is extremely passionate about her lectures, which may confuse you but ASK QUESTIONS! Literature is a bliss! Her assignments are a joy. NO LAZYNESS! SHOW RESPECT!
Shes is an amazing teacher who understands todays generation. Shes a big activist and wants the best for her students. Easy to talk to and gives students an amazing experience while learning about literature.
Some of her assignments dont make sense but she will explain. Loved her class because she let us express our views. Very fun class and she is very understanding.
Professor Martinez-Gil was an amazing and inspirational Professor. I took her during a shortened term and she couldn't have been more helpful in keeping me on track. I definitely recommend her course. You will not regret taking her! She really cares for every student and does the most for each student to succeed.
We had some little assignments here and there but majority of your grade is determined by the final project, which unfortunately like many other of the assignments, has an unclear grading criteria. I gave her solid ratings bc her class was mostly easy and she isn't a bad prof., but her class can be very disorganized and unclear at times.
She is the rare type of professor who is teaching with God's blessing. I mean nothing religious. Languages are just her nature and passion. Thus she teaches it so understandable and inspirable at the same time. Even you hated to write before, after class with professor Gil, you will find yourself constantly writing smth and feeling good about it.
I do not recommend taking any class with this professor. Her lectures, which she grades attendance for attending, are mostly unrelated to the class assignments, she jumps from topic to topic which makes it very hard to follow what's going on, and on top of that, she gives an attitude when students ask questions for clarification on assignments.
I took her 8-week arranged hours course, which means we never had any lectures, only assignments. For the whole short semester, she never graded any of my assignments until after the deadline, which made it so confusing for me to know how I was doing in class. Never got any feedback. It didn't even feel like I had a teacher to be honest.
She's a pretty good prof. She talks a lot about her life and sometimes doesn't really get too much into the lecture. She takes forever to grade, but I love that she lets you write about personal things without judgement. I would recommend, she's also an activist, and is very passionate about what she teaches.
She tends to ramble, but nonetheless, she's a pretty good professor. She talks a lot about her life during lectures, but her assignments are pretty easy, although they are a bit confusing at times. I loved that she let us write about whatever we wanted, although she takes forever to grade. Just follow the prompt and you'll get full credit.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. Very supportive and fair. At the end of the day, she wants all her students to succeed and I 1000% recommend her to anyone.
Tends to ramble a lot about things loosely connected to lectures. Communication on what is required for assignments isn't always clear. Grades late. That said, she wants every student to succeed and is very understanding. Just try to participate and do your best on assignments and you're golden.
Prof Gil's class is very disorganized. She wouldn't post the material for the week until Monday or Tuesday and in a 6-week winter class, it made planning difficult. But she is a fair grader and the assignments were interesting. The workload was manageable. I wouldn't rush to take her class again but she is a solid choice for English 2.
As a first semester student I expected to struggle more but this professor was very fair to me and understood if you needed extensions due to situations. She does want class participation and will call on you, overall pretty nice class with plenty of time to do assignments that were all posted ahead of time.
Teacher doesn't explain assignments well. Always makes her own assignments that aren't normal. Encourages asking questions then gets mad when you ask questions. Always making different and difficult assingments because she claims she teaches in a different way. Whole class is a mess. Always goes off topic when speaking
As long as you read the criteria and participate you will get a good grade in her class. Also very accommodating when certain circumstances arises.
I enjoyed Profe Martinez-Gil's class. The pacing was surprisingly good compared to other 8 week courses I have taken, and the deductions for late assignments where small. She likes to talk to her students a lot through chat and like to hear thoughts, so don't be afraid to speak you mind. Plus, no textbook required. Y'all should take her!
Take this class! This is my absolute favorite professor thus far in my academic career. Profe crafts an enlightening course that focuses on personal and academic development. She is easily available to provide guidance when needed. There is a lot of reading in each chapter but assignments are written on the literary pice of your choice. Loved this
we can't add Eng 2 for such a long time just because after even TWO weeks for the midterm, she still didn't give us the permission for Eng 2. Then after ALL the amazing professors have been chosen and closed, she will then let you know relax, I am gonna pass the permission now. Wow, that's just so grateful. I'm so angry about that, that's it.
Great professor who always has a good attitude towards students who do their work on time. DO NOT take this class if you aren't willing to participate in lectures or group work. It's a fun class though :)
Honestly, it was a great class, and I loved the teacher. She is very passionate about teaching English and will accommodate the students. She cares about participation; if you show up early and are prepared to learn daily, she will treat you better. If you take this class be sure to come in early and say good morning every class :)
Profe Gil is the best! You can tell how passionate she is about what she teaches. Her lectures are full of fun, she is very encouraging and answers all questions with clarity and truly cares about her students. As long as you show up and do your assignments, she WILL always help you. You will learn a lot. Take her class, you won't regret it!!
Prof. Martinez-Gil never responds her emails and barely gives any feedback, she once kicked a girl out of her zoom meeting for no reason and gave her an attitude in front of class. Would never take.
Prof. Martinez-Gil's lectures are very heavy and expect us to know everything, She never responds to her emails. She forbids us from having our cameras off in zoom class, even for bathroom breaks or personal reasons.
Prof. Martinez-Gil deeply cares about her students and it shows through her teaching. She's an amazing mentor, she ensures her classroom is welcoming and a supportive space. Her zoom classes are very interactive, it's easy to form connections with her and your peers! Her lectures/assignments are engaging and prepare you for upcoming big projects.
Professor Martinez-Gil is one of the most passionate professors I have had. She is very knowledgeable in English and genuinely cares about her students' learning. She takes time to explain concepts clearly, gives meaningful feedback, and creates an engaging, supportive class environment.
