Kinda hard, causes u to think- u actually learn, sometimes gets off on tangents
Only class I've ever withdrawn from...yet i passed calculas and advanced acct.
One of the worst professors I've had, dreaded going to every class. Belittled student opinions.
The worst teacher I've ever experienced. I had to drop the class because she made it so difficult. She said if taking just for gen ed credit then to leave the class. this class is a gen ed category. DO NOT TAKE!!!
mean and nasty. indirectly accused a group of male students wearing greek letter of date**** during a lecture. takes attendence.

very hard, big presentation, makes you think, very passionate about her beliefs...
Fixated on marxism. Will only except viewpoints that agree with hers (and this was in a class where almost everyone was already a leftist). Goes off on so many tangents that the course material is never covered. Aslo shared a bit too much personal info
Will not accept any other views but her own. Will debate whole class period on one topic until everyone gives up and says they agree with her. Everyone is entitled to their opinion -- well not in this class. "Pretend" to see her views to get a
Should be fired. Terrible teacher as well as a terrible person. Hates men. Only accepts her own opinions, everyone else is wrong.
I love this class and this teacher, for all of those who gave her a bad rating, it's because you refuse to open your minds. the only one teacher here that knows what she is talking about, is passionate and cares.she belongs @ Columbia.
the reason i will vote as conservative as possible in the next election

"biased"- yes. but what does that mean? that she has solid beliefs and backs them up with examples and arguements? yes. great teacher, if you want to learn some things, not if you want to flyby doing nothing. if you want a different view
She only see's thing her way. I dropped the class the first day man I wished I would of looked on here before taking her class. She made it very clear that if you are conservative you will fail her class. Nothing but hard tests and lots of project. SAY NO
What a terrible person and teacher. Not open to any viewpoints other than her own. Hates men. Your opinions are wrong, no matter what. No one take this class, she won't have anything to teach.
May have matured since previous comments were made. As a male with moderate politics, I did disagree with some points she made but the focus of class has shifted away from discussion/debate toward understanding feminist readings.
She will terrify you on the first day. However, as the course progressed, I grew to understand/ respect her. Diff views than me, (i'm a guy) but I believe she is a great professor. Her intention is not to brainwash, it is to increase social awareness.
Very intimidating firt couple days of class, but got better as the minimester went on. I'm a conservative, and she completely disagreed with my viewpoints, but she didn't fail me like previous person thought. Very opinionated and stubborn on her ideas.

This woman does not even look at you when you speak to her in class. She has little respect for her students unless you agree verbatim with her beliefs. The course was never on topic. To be a professor and have respect you must give it,and she does not.
The teacher seems very knowledgable and passionate. The material is very interesting.
She talks more about racism than sexism. I got so sick of hearing about how i oppress everyone. She isv very well educated, but extremely annoying, and WILL ****you off.
I DO NOT like her class, nothing like I expected! The class has nothing to do with women! It's hard! She is too interested in the Economic side of things and talks constantly about stuff that I have no clue what shes talking about! The end of the semester project seems like a waste of time...
It was a hard class and she was very demanding, but I really learned a lot. If you are interested in the subject and you are willing to work, it's a great class.
Her class is great. Most students who hate the class are usally very closed minded and try not to even understand what she's teaching. You learn a lot from her class, but it's no longer high school. Be prepared to work! She's not going to hold your hand like a baby! She did come from Columbia U.
This class is really hard! I don't think she realizes that most people are taking 2 or 3 other classes then just hers. Prepare to READ,READ,READ... too much to do in too little time. What's the point of cramming it in if it's just going to overwhelm us? I did not like her class at all.

An excellent teacher and an excellent class for those who want to learn about diversity and women's equality.
Don't take any classes with this professor. She's always late and lets you out late. She constantly goes off on tangents instead of actually teaching the material. Not helpful with students questions. HW, classwork, projects are all wastes of time. I would never be in another of her classes.
I've taken two courses with Dr. Rio, and yes, she is a tough teacher. Meaning that she requires her students to THINK and not regurgitate material. Tests are essay, attendance is mandatory, but you WILL learn in this class. Paper is not too bad, group presentations help grades out alot. Good prof
I hated this class. She is rude. If you are male or a conservative or a republican you will probably share my views on this lady. She is the perfect teacher for this class. I got a B+ in the class but hated every second of it. Make a tally on how many times she says don't take my word for it.
She isnt a bad lady, but the class was so confusing. i never knew what was going on. i did ok in the class, only because i studied the review sheet for the tests so hard. other than that, i couldnt even tell u what i learned. i wouldnt recommend this class
one of the few classes at Towson where i actually learned something of use
prof rio knows what shes talking about. shes a hard teacher, but shes worth it. you will learn so much from her if you actually pay attention in class.
Dr. Rio's class can be hard most of the time, but as long as you take good notes and raise your hand in class, it should be OK. Though her ideas may seem unworldly or extreme, rather than ignoring her listen to what she has to say, because most of it is surprisingly true. She's one of the few Prof. who will actually teach you something worthwhile.
If this class is difficult for anyone, it's because that person didn't demonstrate an interest in the subject matter. This professor is looking for someone to listen - and, since she makes some very interesting points (she's an economist teachiing women's studies), that shouldn't be too hard.
This was my first class at Towson and I really grew to like Dr. Rio a lot. I've since been assigned to her for advising and she has worked with me on a directed reading. LOVE HER!! Be prepared to work hard, pay attention and participate.
I only took this class to fill up space. but I ended up really liking it. Though its a WMST class, I've learn more in one of her classes than I do any other. Be prepared to work though!
dont take it, its hard and you have no idea whats going on even if you pay attention. she just stands there and talks about stuff and i guess those are the lectures but when you get the tests, you're completely lost. i ended up taking it pass/fail, and i might not even pass. shes a horrible teacher. interesting course tho just get a diff teacher
She encourages students to ask quetions and when you do she yells at you and makes u feel stupid. She is very hard and you only have a mid-term and a final and 1 group presentation. Not an easy A. i worked my butt off and im still only getting a B.
Rio is very into Women Studies but she never makes anything clear. The study guide for the exams are very helpful... make sure you do them even though they are alot of work... if you wanna work for your grade... then its a good class but if you dont... NOT GOOD.
she is a difficult teacher, but VERY interesting and very informative. really knows what shes talking about, and the study guides make the test really clear. you do a lot of work, but i have learned more in this class than any other class i've taken.
She'll close her eyes and start teaching. You WILL learn... One of the best I have ever encountered. Great asset to the department.
She is a hard teacher, but you will learn something from her class. Make sure you DO NOT FALL BEHIND ON READINGS! The study guide is long, but if you take good notes you will be fine. The group presentation needs to be interesting as does the individual presentation. Attend class, pay attention, and participate and you will be sure to enjoy class.
you have to print out soo many articles and she makes you sit in the circle like many other WMST teachers. when shes done talking if you dont have anyone to contribute to the conversation she gets mad and its sooo boring. never lets you out early even if shes done and no one is talking. the book is a big deal too
She is horrible, she's not helpful with anything, and interupts you during your presentations, doesn't care what your opinion is on the subject. Takes off point if you don't use specific words on your exams...DO NOT TAKE HER!!! Worse professor I ever had!
Very difficult person to deal with, she doesn't help you if you need it, doesn't make any sense half the time, and thinks she is the smartest person in the subject. Your opinion doesn't mean a thing, and if you want to know your grades..yeah good luck with that! she'll let you know where you stand AFTER the drop date! DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!!!!!!!!
very very hard professor. she expects a LOT of her students, including mandatory participation. If you do not read, you will fail. If you do not take copious notes on every word she says, you will fail. Don't take this class "for fun" or as an elective- it's not worth it
She was one of my favorite teachers at towson! She taught me so much, and while she may be a bit crazy, it's really fun to be in her class. She expects a lot from her students, but that's just want Towson needs! She can be kind of scary, but that is just because of her passion for the subject which have really impacted my education :) love her!
She's a bit overwhelming at first, but after a week or so the class is fine. She knows what she's talking about. I only took this class for a gen-ed requirement and it's one of my favorite classes yet at Towson.
HER TESTS ARE ALL SHORT ANSWER NO MULTIPLE CHOICE. Even if you answer it thoroughly she still doesnt give you full credit.
The first two days i thought I was going to absolutely hate prof Rio. But as the semester went on she grew to be my favorite professor. The class is dificult, but not AT ALL impossible. CLASS PARTICIPATION WILL GIVE YOU AN EDGE UP!! She is extremely passionate about what she teaches and overall an absolutely fantastic teacher.
Rio knows what she is talking about. Men might be a little scared of her at first but she is a very knowledgable teacher. You will learn a lot about issues around the world that affects women and all others. 1 final, midterm split into 2 exams, first one harder, second easy, 5-7 pg paper on female chauvinist pig book.
When I started the class I was not a fan. As time progressed Rio made me look at things in a totally new light! Because of her I want to do a second degree in Women's Studies!!! Her class is one of my favorites ever at Towson. Read, read, read and take good notes. She likes detail and she is very knowledgable on the subject!
Shes very passionate about her class. Umm. the class overall was ok. I did learn certain social things that otherwise id be blind too. I always passed her tests. They weren't too bad, and it was easy to make up points on the essays. Shes ot one of those close minded hard core feminists. Id take her again.
I loved this class! She was a tough grader, but really taught me a lot and I took a lot from this class. Doesn't really respond to e-mails and she may seem a bit intimidating at first, but if she feels you're truly trying in class, she can be very helpful. Take good notes and you should do fine.
I would not reccomend her. She's...crazy. She rants about all the problems in the country and has a LOT of opinions. If you say anything that she doesn't agree with, she treats you like you are stupid. She's white, but she seems like she really wants to be black. It's weird. There's a midterm and a final. Two difficult projects. A lot for a Gen-Ed.
At first she may seem like a horrible teacher, but believe me she is great! She is very passionate about the subject and she really opens your eyes to what the world is really like. I def recommend it! Take it if you can! There are a few homework assignments in the beginning, one individual project, one group project, and 2 exams. Study!
If you are looking for a class where the professor is passionate and you actually learn something, take WMST 231 with Rio. It's a GenEd but its really valuable. a lot of reading is required but as long as you do the articles at the end of the chapter you will do okay. tests are mainly vocabulary and short answer to demonstrate you paid attention.
Rio really is a great professor. She is passionate about what she teaches and you will take a lot from her class. It's not an easy A, and you have reading after every class but its well worth it. 2 major projects. Midterm and Final are moderate but come to class and follow her review and youll do fine. Over all an amazing professor.
At first she is very intimidating. But she is a wonderful teacher and so engaged in the class. She loves to teach. A lot of interesting information learned! Take her!! The first day she tries to scare you off, but don't leave. Its worth it to stay.
I was extremely disappointed in this class. The topic of HBO's THE WIRE and other topics covered were very interesting however she is extremely condescending. She always talks about how no one puts any effort in when most of the students work very hard. She also expects you to come in every THURSDAY night from 7-10 PM for "extra credit"
Prof. Rio is very knowledgable but she decides to express her knowledge in an extremely condescending way. I thought I would look forward to this class because it was based on The Wire but I dreaded it. She thinks 99% of students at Towson don't care about their education, it's ridiculous. Stay away!
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. Rio is a difficult professor. She will cut you off in the middle of your presentations. Strict grader, attendance is mandatory. Very rarely lets you out early. She is very strongly opinionated, does not accept any other opinions but her own. Do not speak in her class. You will regret it.
I learned more from Prof. Rio than any other of my professors! She is the one who got me thinking and rethinking what I thought I knew! Her lectures are delivered for the most part without notes...she knows her topics and she's well versed in hersubject matter. I would recommend her class(es) to anyone.
Very passionate about the subject. Tests are hard but if you study a lot its not that bad. She gives the study guide about a day before the final with ALOT of questions and vocab to know when only some was on the test. Learned alot though I would recommend her
TAKE HER!! She completely changed my outlook on everything- in a good way! She is very knowledgeable, helpful, and passionate about the subject. She has taught me more than what is just on tests. I recommend taking any class she teaches, at first she might intimidate you but she is awesome!!
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES, unless you are a womens studies majors. Has opinion that she pushes on you, even if you tell her you dont agree. Tests are all about her opinion she gave you in lecture, not the text or your own opinion.
Awesome professor. She is extremely passionate and intelligent, prior to taking this class my interest was low but Dr.Rio has truly changed my perspective on everything. Take this class WITH this professor, because it truly is Life- Changing!!!
Dr. Rio is intimidating, but she knows her stuff. Tons of previous reviewers say that she only wants to hear her own opinions. But they aren't her opinions. She backs up everything she says with facts and examples to prove it. She's old fashioned, and she is a tough grader. But you will learn SO MUCH. If you want to learn, you will.
HARD! I received a B+ but I am an A student. This is a core class so it's supposed to boost you grade, not have you struggle to get a B. The class itself is interesting though.
Take Dr. Rio and she really will change your life. The class has been one of the very few classes that truly connect to the real world and shows you things about society that you never knew. Prof. Rio elaborates on topics and always gives examples to vocabulary. She is a very passionate, knowledgeable woman and students can really learn a lot.
Professor Rio is amazing. Everyone should take a class with her. Don't let her scare you off the first class, I think she just tries to scare off the slackers. This class does require work and reading but it was so interesting it was worth my time.
This woman knows her stuff and her classes can very interesting. However, her lectures are very repetitive and you will hear the same thing over and over again. She definitely has power trip going on too. Most ridiculous thing is you have to ask her to use the bathroom. This is college not elementary school. Tough grader. You've been warned.
Come to class, do the readings, don't expect to wing the tests, she's a nice lady whose class will make you think.
Rio can seem very intimidating at first, but trust me, she's not as scary as the semester goes by. This class isn't too difficult, but you do have to stay on top of things. Just listen to the key points she says, read the textbook, and do well on the mini presentation and group project and you'll be fine!
Do not let her scare you off the first day. She's not that bad. Just follow the rules and READ THE SYLLABUS. Study guides are so handy.
She's a tough professor but her expectations are crystal clear. If you do the readings and work as instructed, you will do well. You will work hard but you will learn so much.
People get on Ms. Rio because she can come off pretty intense, but she is an amazing teacher. You will learn so much in this class! two tests, where she let you choose to define 10 out of 12 def and answer 4 out of 6 short answer. One extra credit question per test. One personal presentation and one group presentation both accompanied with papers.
I loved Professor Rio. She can be scary, but she is very passionate about what she teaches. I learned a lot from her and her class is one of the few that I will remember. She is a tough grader, but if you pay attention in class and follow guidelines, you will do fine. Only a midterm, a final, a solo presentation and a group presentation.
She is really tough and can come off as very intimidating, but you do learn a lot and the material is interesting. Very tough grader. Showed up an hour late to the final and made us take the WHOLE thing in only one hour, which was really not appreciated and refused to talk calmly with us about it.
Hands down the worst professor I have ever had. She has the strongest personality I have ever encountered and if you do not share her views, she will 100% not like you. She is really condescending and rude, so I found the lectures really difficult to listen to. She rants about respect, yet she has none for her students. Do not take her class.
If you take this class, the best and wisest advice any person can give you is GET OUT! Save yourself and as many people as you possibly can. Tough grader, irrationality is her go to method and bigotry is her specialty.
I absolutely loved Professor Rio. Everyone who says she's not an easy A is right. You have to work for your grade but it's worth it. I learned a lot in this class and wouldn't hesitate to take it again. Take notes, pay attention, go to class, use her rubrics and study guides and you'll pass. You'll love her, she's passionate and intelligent.
A lot of people complain about how "tough" she is but honestly if you put forth the effort and try you'll do fine. She's very passionate and wants her students to learn the material and be successful. She has very clear grading criteria and follow the study guides for the exams! I wouldn't have wanted to take this class with any other professor!
The class was not difficult as long as you understood her point of view. I did not agree with her, but made sure to repeat what she wanted. She has no respect for the students and was not very helpful. She seemed to be in a bad mood a lot.
I loved Professor Rio, she's so passionate about what she teaches. She scared me so badly on the first day but the class was not nearly as hard as it seemed. As long as you have a good grouop to do projects and study for the midterm and final it shouldn't be hard to get an A or B in the class
I was one of the few guys in the class, and it is certainly possible to pass if you work for it. She is very opinionated but I learned more in this class than anything else at Towson so far. Both textbooks are 100% mandatory.
Worst teacher I have ever had in my entire academic career.
Professor Rio is a very straightforward person. If you don't read then you won't pass. All of her exams are written. Attendance is mandatory. She is very passionate about her subject which makes it interesting. Some people may feel intimidated at times because she comes off as a very strong and opinionated person but she means well.
Such an interesting class but such an awful person to teach it. Mrs. Rio is great on her own, super interesting and opinionated but not a good professor. She will not put any notes or slides on blackboard so she expects you to write down everything in class but she goes way too fast. Her midterm and final are ridiculously hard!! Grades too hard too
Prof Rio is probably the most interesting professor I've ever taken at Towson. She cares so much about the topic and really did change the way I look at our society. BUT, She's a super hard grader and her tests are extremely difficult. She's only prof I've had that has you write in chicago style so get ready to fail that.
Within moments of being in Dr. Rio's class, I realized that THIS was why I had gone back to school. She's incredibly bright and I always look forward to her lectures and discussions. She is organized, accessible, and pretty much exudes competence. She expects her students to behave like adults and to exercise appropriate respect. And in return they can expect the same. Dr. Rio is clearly dedicated and is truly an excellent professor.
Don't fall for the hype. This class is strictly reading so unless you love to read then DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! I am a math/chemistry person so believe me when I say this class was NOT for me. There are 2 papers not horrible but certainly not easy. There are two exam (midterm and final) ALL OPEN ENDED! Don't say I didn't warn you.
Rio is a tough grader and really makes you work for it. You should read; she gives pop quizzes. You'll also need the text book for your mini and group projects. She takes attendance every time. She talks a lot, she does know what she's talking about, so take notes because it's all game for the midterm and finals. Very opinionated, but educational.
Professor Rio has a very strong personality and often comes off as intimidating. However, she is a generally a pretty easy grader. Very little homework, just an individual paper and presentation, group paper and presentation, midterm, and final. Definitely read the book. Her lectures are interesting but she often rambles and rants.
Rio cares about her class, and if you show that you don't care, well you're in a rut. Do the readings, take really good notes, and good luck. She can be a little condescending at points and overbearing, but there were moments where I really liked her. GO TO CLASS, she takes attendance at the beginning and don't be late. Interesting content
The first day of class she is very intimidating but will tell you how the class will go. She is very passionate and cares about her students and wants you to do well as long as you put in the work. She does not give out easy A's you have to work to get them. The first test I got a 98% and studied her study guide and paid attention in class.
Loved Professor Rio!! Very strict but lets you know exactly what she expects!! 4 little homework assignments in the beginning, 2 projects (one group, one individual), midterm and a final. Pay attention in class, take good notes, and review the study guides and you'll do fine!! p.s. she doesn't post on blackboard so attendance is important!!
extremely hard greater, and extremely liberal and voices it all the time. she doesn't use blackboard so you're always unsure of your grade.
This professor is very experienced and passionate about gender studies. She is a great lecturer and she is very clear with what she wants. She only gave a midterm and a final. She can be intimidating but she cares a lot about her students. Make sure you read because she will be able to tell If you didn't and she will write it on your midterm lol
Prof. Rio is intimidating and can be a condescending tends to ramble during lectures about her views and beliefs. Very few grades- 4 little homework assignments, individual paper and presentation, mid term, group presentation and paper, and the final. Do the primary readings and show up for class. She's not a hard grader if you write her opinions
Professor Rio is very smart and has a lot of experience. She is very honest and clear about what she wants, but can be a bit unreasonable. Grades very harshly... which gives the class its difficulty. Class discussion is interesting and eye opening. Really study because she grades the essays, projects, and tests very HARD.
Do not take this class if you are expecting an easy A. You definitely have to work for it. It was an alright class I feel I learned a lot but at times she expected too much. There was only tests were a midterm and final. They weren't too hard just a load of material to study for such a short exam. There were 2 presentations an individual&group.
She seems intimidating at the start of the semester, but you will do well if you hustle and put in effort. You don't necessarily have to do every reading, but do most or you won't do well. The group project will either save or ruin your grade, so make sure to chose your group members wisely. Great personality!
A midterm and a final, as well as one individual projects and one group project. The group project can easily screw you over if you have bad partners. Prof. Rio isn't the easiest teacher in the world, so don't expect an easy A. She is not boring by any means and it isn't a super hard class. Only a few HW worksheets at the beginning.
Professor Rio is very disrespectful towards students. She treats you like we are in grade school. We aren't even allowed to go to the bathroom without asking her. Shes so rude and doesn't care about the students. She verbally attacks students and its her way or the highway. Not an easy core.
She is overall okay. she is very strict with the assignments and not many things in the grade book. in class we had one group presentation go and not fully understand the syllabus and she completely embarrassed them and made someone cry. she does not explain any assignment well unless you ask. if you Read the book you should be fine.
This is not an easy core and she will make you work for your grade Do EXACTLY as the syllabus projects and you should be fine. There is a midterm and final but it's not really that bad, just be sure to study. She doesn't use blackboard so you won't know your grade. If taking this for a core try anything else first.
Absolutely hate this professor. If youre a male DO NOT TAKE HER!! She hates men, and makes it quite obvious in class that she feels that way. She also told us you should drop the class if you have an opposing viewpoint, or are conservative.-because u wont pass. DO BETTER TU!! makes you raise your hand to use bathroom like youre a child again
Possibly the strictest professor at Towson. This core is NOT an easy A- Prof Rio is VERY passionate about the subject and takes her job VERY seriously. Prepare to go out of your way to receive any help on assignments and prepare for exams as she is not very... empathetic. Does not use Blackboard.
She is so disrespectful and very contradicting. She tells you to act as an adult, but does things like makes you raise your hand to go to the bathroom and threatens students with pop quizzes if you don't participate. Although, she makes you not want to! You say one thing she doesn't like and she rips you apart in the class, takes advantage of core.
Professor Rio is very passionate about what she teaches and often will confront a student who doesn't agree with her. Maybe it's because of being online but workload is very heavy especially with lectures. Only a midterm and final but be prepared to do all extra work to get good grades on exams. Gets a bad rep but helps the students who try.
Rudest professor I've ever had. Blatantly disrespects students, can't take feedback. She gives very little instruction on assignments and grades harshly. Avoid her if you can.
SAVE YOURSELF!!!!!!! SHE IS THE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. MY CLASS AND HER ARUGED ALL THE TIME BECAUSE SHES JUST TERRIBLE. SHE IS SO DISRESPECTFUL, SHES UNFAIR AND SHE TREATS HER STUDENTS LIKE CHILDREN. SHE DEMANDS RESPECT EVEN WHEN SHE DOESN'T GIVE IT BACK AND SHE CAN BE SO SARCASTIC FOR NO REASON. I hate it here! TAKE SOMEONE ELSE IF U CAN
A lot of reading. The class in itself should not be difficult or stressful but, she made it extremely hard with her teaching style and attitude towards students. She's very rude, unfair, and condescending. She's one of those professors that doesn't give clear direction but if you don't do it the way she wants it she takes points off. Don't take.
Do not take her class, she's very disrespectful towards students and lacks the ability to take constructive criticism. There were moments where we would rudely interrupt a student and would look very inpatient and act rude when students are presenting projects. Despite her "experience" she is a horrible professor is never focused.
Knowledgable and passionate, but struggled with online instruction. I've taken her class pre-covid and it was a much better experience than online. She can be unclear with assignments, but she is willing to help/meet with students who have questions. She only enters few grades for the semester, so make sure to do well on graded assignments.
Professor Rio was incredibly passionate about the topics she taught in this class. Content was very relevant, drawing on readings about Baltimores history as well as recent news articles. If you complete the in-class assignments you will be prepared for the exams! A tough class but totally manageable if you keep up with readings & ask questions!
she was a great professor, supportive. She makes you work for your grade. She couldn't reopen the discussions which was super annoying also but overall she a great psych professor I shes to the point.
I had several issues with Professor Rio when I was in her class. She is not very understanding at all (even in the case of a death in the family). She was very rude and hostile in class and tended to talk to her students as if they were dumb. That being said she is very knowledgeable in her field but she is not a good person in my eyes.
Prof. Rio is a tough grader but is so interested in what she teaches. She is a hard core feminist and loves to share her opinions to the class. Her lectures are very long and boring but the material you are learning is not. Shes accesible out side of class but not very lenient with due dates and deadlines.
Rio knows the subject matter very well but she is not the best at portraying that. Hard to follow and confusing. 2 project, 1 group project, 2 exams, daily readings but not required because you don't turn anything in they are mostly just for notes for the exam. Doesn't take attendance. Not approachable, makes you feel stupid if you ask questions.
Passionate and makes sure her students study. Per previous comments, she doesn't hate men and never expects you to always agree with the ideas in course material, she is tolerant and expresses it often. Exams are brutal, study guides get released 1-2 days before. There aren't many assignments to help your grade so exams are critical. Textbook heavy
Professor Rio is the most difficult person I have ever had to cooperate with. She is so blatantly disrespectful towards students. If you say one thing she doesnt completely agree with, she will blow up and make you out to be an idiot. Makes faces at students presentations and interrupts but still uses that as their presentation time. Horrible class
I think Prof. Rio gets a lot more flack than what she deserves. She knows what she's talking about & she's great at laying info out in a way that makes it easy to digest. She is very inflexible but a lot of male professors are the exact same way and don't get the same criticism. My only critique is that she takes FOREVER to grade assignments.
Professor Rio, is by far the most critical professor I have had at Towson. She does not work to accomodate the needs of her students. She is not understanding to mistakes or anything that will inconvenience her time. Her comments on Exams are often unnecessary and rude. She speaks with a harsh tone and to me is overall not a people person.
Worst teacher I have ever had. Yes she knows what she is talking about and really cares, but she is very rude. Everything has to be on her time and the way she wants it and to be perfect. Very tough grader when comes to quizzes and there's 2 exams and they take up 50% of your final grade.
The study guide she gives us has too many terms to memorize just to be asked for a couple of vocabs. This class is hard to manage while taking other classes. Take this class with someone else if you want to take an enjoyable class. There is a lot of reading and note-taking. I liked the presentations we did though but the tests were terrible.
Took WMST with prof. Rio in 2006. Came to leave this review bc I can't believe all the bad ones. Yes, she is tough; yes, she will challenge you. But that is what college is about. Nearly 20 years later I still cite prof Rio and her class as life changing. She is amazing, and working through the difficulty of her class pays off in the long run.
You definitely want to study in this class because there are about 6 assignment grades for the entire course and the tests are usually made up of words you need to define and critical thinking/ application of whatever we learned (but the take a while to grade things) I highly recommend her because she is the best teacher for women in perspectives
Prof Rio is extremely passionate about this subject, and that makes her lectures very captivating. As long as you keep good attendance, you will do well. Textbook optional, I never read it and did good overall.
Overall, this course felt very important to take. All topics learned all valuable for anyones future. Prof. Rio is strict, and a tough grader. Although prof. Rio is very educated in the material, she once yelled at a student for turning in a paper ONE minute after class started. Idk, this course is hot and cold.
I waited until I was a senior to write this review so that I could say with confidence that Prof. Rio is the worst professor I have ever met. She tried to unfairly ruin my presentation until I said I will contact the dean or board of directors. Rio is a miserable lady with too much power, and I saw her disrespect many students... DO NOT TAKE!
this was asynchronous. since there's no lecture, so there's more homework. it's just one assignment per week, but you have to do a lot of reading and movie-watching (1 hour+ long videos) and then write a paragraph or two. the assignments are not hard!! just dedicate time to finish them. she gives feedback for everything. it is not hard!
she's passionate about what she teaches but not worth the stress she can give you, ESPECIALLY over a course people only take to get the core out the way. She's very rude. No electronics in this class so make sure you bring a pen and paper. Doesn't upload any grades on blackboard, she said "keep your graded assignments so calculate your grade."
Overall this class was interesting and she is passionate about this class. She is VERY strict with assignments but just follow the rubric and you'll be fine. No electronic class and she has tests that are just on definitions.
Some of these reviews are far too harsh on her. She is very passionate about this topic and adds a few jokes when teaching. She comes off a bit harsh but all she wants is for her students to succeed. The assignments are not difficult and you are given a fair amount of time to complete them.
Prof. Rio knows her stuff, but the strict policies and tough grading can be stressful. Avoid distractions, stay on top of readings, and use study tools like Unstuckstudy to prep for the challenging exams. Overall, an informative course if you're willing to put in the work.
She is so passionate about what she teaches and although the tests can be challenging, there are very few and if you study, you will ace them. She genuinely cares about what she teaches and wants to see her students to succeed. She could come off a bit harsh but that's just her. She likes when students participate even if you just throw out a guess
She is very passionate about feminism and her lectures were always interesting and engaging. She definitely gets political, but I feel like she had to given the content she taught. Your final grade is based a lot on quizzes, exams, and papers, but she is a fair grader. Also, she is incredibly knowledgeable about the content.
Professor Rio is very serious and strict about her class. Everything is by the syllabus, she won't even answer a simple question if it's on the syllabus. She has you print out every paper, and there's a no-electronic policy. Her teaching is good, understandable, and thorough. Her quizzes are just definitions you must know word for word by her term.
Professor Rio is so unbelievably strict, like she won't even excuse a minor technical difficulty, she won't respond to emails there's no understanding or compromise no matter how hard you try. I don't know I personally would not recommend her.
This class was easy she is just a really tough grader very nit picky. This class was online mainly discussion posts based most of the assignments require you to watch a film roughly 1-2 hours long and supporting readings. She does give feedback which is not very helpful, also not responsive with emails takes her days or even weeks to respond.
Absolutely terrible. Picks favorites and if you don't agree with her point of view or participate regularly she will grade everything harsher. Took points off my quizzes for missing a single word that wasnt in the definition SHE provided, and that she didn't take off for other people.
Grad Student: Dr. Rio is a fave of mine! The readings are a lot and there are weekly blackboard assignments to ensure that you read the material, but everything os clearly labeled in the syllabus! As long as you participate and read you will do well. She breaks down the material to ensure that we really understood what we were reading.
