he's pretty good at 'controlling' the class average at around 50%(usually 40%- for midterms). So its your call if or not take his class.
You'll need to do quite a lot of practice on your own for this course (few hours a week), so it'll really burn you if you're lazy. Textbook isn't all that useful especially without a solution manual.
One of the harder courses you'll come by in CS lower level courses. I recommend avoid taking his class if you can, unless you have strong grasp of MACM 101. His overhead notes are difficult to read + his accent doesn't help. The textbook for this course are one of the worst I've seen too. Very frustrating. Visit Macm workshop frequently!
The course is pretty difficult. You will have to pre-read the text, attend lecture, and review after. His additional question for weekly homework is pretty much impossible. However, the exams are fare and pretty easy if you practice the essental material. The exams are clear and the questions are straight forward.
I used to think that as long as I tried hard enough myself, it doesnt matter how bad the proof is. This doesnt work at all for his class. No examples at all given to the class. The textbook doesnt provide any example either. No help from TA. AVIOD HIM !!!
Bad teaching techniques mixed with a strong french accent. You will need to put forward a substantial effort if you are looking to get a good mark with him as your'e teacher. Of course if you can speak french you may do better...
all im going to say is french should be a prerequisite for his courses....no joke! i dont really know if hes bad at teaching or not because he is speaking a different language.
If you know french by any chance this prof is for you! He CANNOT teach, I'm telling you the truth. His french accent combined with constant mistakes make his lectures pointless. He stresses too much on formal definition/theories rather than examples. Also, the examples he uses in lecture are directly from the text book without any proper explanatio
His accent isn't all that bad, but he's so focused on getting through the material that he rushes through without taking time to really teach. But, when he's covered the day's material and sees that he has extra time, he'll explain everything in a nice, clear "summary" that's really worth catching. So just hope he runs ahead of schedule, every day.
He taught the material well. His writing can be difficult to interpret at times. A decent prof. However, he assigns super long and difficult assignments. You will need superior math and programming skills in order to complete these assignments. Content seems to go beyond any 2nd year math course. Take math modelling courses as late as you can!
His assignments are tough, especially since they were weighed so heavily on the grade. Exams were fairly easy with the final being scaled quite a bit. His teaching style can be dry but if something is not clear, just ask him and he'll explain really well.
Though I received a good mark in the class, I hated this course. It was more of a survey course in applied mathematics. The assignments were tedious and we were only given two hours on the final. I can imagine the material being very difficult if you haven't taken upper division courses. I am so glad this course is never being offered again.
OK, I self-studied Linear Algebra by watching Yale open course video first, so I find this course kinda easy. Regarding the prof, his accent, well, is sexy, but makes me hard to follow, and I finally get used to his hand writing. He got a nice shape!
Hated this class so much. he said he was disappointed with the students, but honestly, he can't expect everyone to learn things the way he did, not everyone is exceptionally exceptional like him. really tough assignments with failing average and shortened final exam time, but not a shortened exam. couldn't understand him for half a semester.
awesome french accent, its nice to listen to but the way he explains things, you might as well not go to lecture and study by yourself. he uses the old overhead projectors instead of the new ones they have
His notes are not very helpful. His exams are difficult and lengthy. Do not take this course with him.
DO NOT TAKE WITH HIM.
His accent is hard to understand and he teaches very fast. His exams are theory/concept based instead of application based. Expect low grades.
His notes were rushed and no context was given for anything. There were constant mistakes in his notes. The whole course seemed to be about definitions and doing things his way. I got an entire question on a midterm wrong because I solved the question correctly using a method I found on the internet rather than his confusing way of teaching it.
His notes are useless. Prof lectures by definition without useful examples. Tests are theory based and do not in any way resemble homework problems. Be prepared to repeat the course.
Cedric teaches linear algebra in the most confusing way. What I mean by confusing is he does not have solid examples of questions that arises in tests and assignments. Instead he wastes his time giving you examples of corollaries. This class is actually pretty easy but you MUST do examples in the book. Do not rely on the lecture!
His assignments and final were really hard. I couldn't believe this was 200level course. Just avoid his class.
There's a few things this prof could improve. Writing's not always clear for notes, french accent can be a problem for some people, sometimes makes mistakes on the notes, and his notes don't explain steps to questions in much detail (uses theories & definitions). The math assignments don't help for exams very much. I recommend textbook questions.
Terrible prof. When you ask questions, it seems like he takes it really personally. He's actually quite rude if you don't understand something. French should be a prerequisite for a class with him. Thick accent & I have trouble understanding him. He makes a lot of mistakes when doing examples, and tries to clarify through canvas afterwards. AVOID!
Very confusing, I only go to lecture to take notes and try to comprehend them afterwards with other resources. Makes multiple mistakes throughout the lecture. Avoid if you can.
Avoid if you can especially if you are not strong in math like I am. Makes the simplist concepts confusing, better off learning from textbook, online sites and piratically spending all your time in the math workshops with the TA's.
His accent and handwriting make lectures quite a bit more difficult. The textbook doesn't help all the time because he occasionally uses methods not in the book and expects STRICTLY those methods for quizzes and exams. The quizzes and hwk are much easier than the exams, making it hard to gauge exam difficulty and to practice for.
My biggest mistake this semester was not reading in advance. With his accent and complex examples I feel if I had read the textbook in advance I could have done better. Note* Most his "examples" is him proving the theory, and those are hella confusing. Only take notes of his actual examples.
Cedric helped make a difficult subject somewhat clear. The homework questions he created taught me more than many of the questions from the textbook. His exams are difficult but his lectures give you an idea of what kind of questions he's going to ask. No big surprises here. Understand the lecture notes and do all of the homework questions!
Confusing, just learn from the text.
His French accent is hard to understand sometimes and he messes up A LOT of the examples in his lecture notes (his lecture notes are also almost directly from the textbook). If you take the time to really understand what he's doing or took calculus in high school, you'll do decently well.
VERY thick French accent. Sometimes screws up examples. Spend time doing the assigned textbook questions (that don't need to be handed in) and maybe watch some Khan Academy on YouTube OR take calc in high school then you'll do fine
Don't expect to pass if you don't understand French. Weekly assignments, (difficulty came in deciphering the questions). Midterms were straight from assignments, final was much more challenging. Fair professor, intimidating to talk too. Will ridicule you in class for asking questions.
Chauve has a bit of an accent and his writing takes a while to get used to but his lectures are fairly decent. Tests are difficult but he will tell you exactly what kind of questions there are and if he doesn't you can ask him to in his review classes and then practice those kinds of questions out of the textbook and you'll be fine.
the worst professor i've ever seen. he doesn't know the hell he's talking about. wouldn't recommend to anybody
Hard marker and poor at teaching. Strong accent makes him tough to understand. Would not recommend!
He's probably one of my favourite profs. He's willing to give out extra help during his office hours. His accent just takes time to get use to.
Better to read the textbook than to attend lecture. His examples can be confusing, everything you need to know is in the textbook.
He has a very harsh accent, and his extremely difficult to understand. I feel that his midterm and final are fair game but you really need to know your material. Over all what are on his exams are what he has covered in class. Make sure you do the practice problems in the textbook as those helped me a lot.
He is terrible, avoid if possible!!!
Explains nothing in lectures.. Ended up teaching myself everything
Kinda tough class
Really bad at explaining things. Examples are totally unrelated to tested question, which is totally unrelated to lecture, which is totally unrelated to text. He confuses himself during class, loses his train of thought and just rights random numbers. Very unpleasant.
Doesn't explain anything. Just confuses me. Everything he says. It is like just random numbers spewing from his mouth. His classes are poorly organized, impossible, and he is a terrible teacher.
Run away. Sign up for 150, 151, 152, 157 anything else.
Very confusing... Midterm asked really obscure questions and wasn't worded correctly. Prof ended up removing last 4 questions cause all 400 students got it wrong. Stay away.
His thick accent makes it nearly impossible to understand what he is saying and even if you do manage to catch a few words, he usually mixes them up. He explains things very poorly and he is just an overall awful teacher. If you have ANY choice at all, don't choose this teacher.
Impossibly difficult. Workshop and TAs are useless, and midterm is deceptive.
He is a mean and vindictive person. Will remove even more marks if you ask for a remark. Can't teach, don't know if he actually knows material, because he's impossible to understand. Moves crazy fast, can't even write down notes, let alone process info. Average was a fail. Don't know why he wants failure for students.
Has a weird way of explaining things, but it makes sense. Getting used to his accent takes some time.
Didn't read his notes once and got 98% on the midterm. not even worth attending lecture, read the textbook and teach yourself if you want to pass
hard to understand what he's saying most of the time, and he screws up the lecture notes a LOT. but he will tell you what is on exams
Worst teacher ever. Avoid avoid avoid.
If you take Calculus in highschool MATH154 with Cedric is not difficult. As long as you do the homework, and read his notes you will do good. Quizzes and midterms are very fair, everything he asked was from homework, quizzes, or notes.
Hard to understand in lecture and found it difficult to decipher his questions in weekly assignments. Terrible at explanations and teaching. I ended up teaching myself everything using khan academy and the textbook. Definitely avoid him if you can!!!
It is hard to understand what he is saying and simply you would understand a thing in his lectures. WORST CLASS EVER!!!
Has a really thick accent and his writing can be hard to understand at times. Goes through the lesson very quickly & does not explain the concepts very well so make sure to read the textbook or learn the material online. The weekly quizzes are straight from the homework. midterms are fair but you'll have to understand all the concepts VERY well
Fortunately, his accent wasn't that hard to get used to, but he doesn't explain anything well in lectures at all. He confuses himself sometimes and gets corrected by students, at least, one lecture a week. Easy course if you took (and did well in) high school calculus, but if not you're on your own and will have to teach yourself everything.
he goes very fast through his notes and always has mistakes in his lecture notes, easy to get used to his accent, but did not explain anything at all, midterms were fair, final exam was hard
Difficult to understand, makes mistakes often. Workshop is useless. AVOID if possible.
Hardest class ever. If you're a first year, don't take this course with Cedric Chauve. His accent is extremely hard to understand, and so are his notes. Just avoid this prof, you'll thank yourself later.
Lectures can be quite difficult to understand, they're very by the book and that can make them hard to grasp at first. Easier to just learn from the textbook but I wouldn't skip class. Midterms and final were very fair, nothing out of left field and completely doable. You can get over his accent quickly and he's a great dude if you talk to him.
Yes first year calculus may be hard (especially if you did not take Calculus 12). This is so for this course, as well as all calculus courses. Yes he has an accent. This is so for this professor, as well as many other professors you will encounter in your university career. He's not super engaging, but he's lighthearted and loves math.
The class is impossibly difficult. So many people keep saying it will be hard if you didn't take Calc 12. That isn't true, it will be impossible. If Calc 12 makes such a difference the prof should require that as a pre-req not Pre-Calc 12. Hard to understand. All exams and quizzes are obscure and hard to follow.
If you didn't take Calc 12, it will be HARD. Do as many or all the questions from the textbook... It will definitely help you throughout the course.
i didnt take Calc 12 but did really well in this class. Its easy if you read every question on the assignment and make sure you understand it. He made the hard questions on the midterms and exam bonus which was great and totally bumps up your grade.
keep up with the notes and homework and you'll do fine!
Cedric was not very helpful in class. His accent made him very difficult to understand and he would get frustrated with himself fairly frequently during class when he would mess up something. Just use the textbook to study. If possible, AVOID HIM!
I'm not great at math, especially calc, but his lectures cleared so many things up for me. Yes his accent takes getting used to, but once you do, his teaching is really clear. The homework and exams were really fair and not too difficult. I never went to office hours, but he didn't seem to like his students very much.
You will get used to his accent! He is ORGANIZED; i.e. you should read in advance, finish assignments before quizzes, and read summary notes every week. He is CONSISTENT; He will tell you what will be on the exam, and you should be on top of every subject that he tests. He is generous in grading. Also, It's an 'n' not an 'm' (you'll see).
Excellent lecturer. Fair marking scheme, but he will make you work for your grade.
Cedric gets a bad rap on here - maybe it's from previous years teaching, I don't know. He's not bad at all - MACM 201 is a rough course, and yeah, the guy has at least one typo or error per slide, but if you do the homework questions and properly review, you'll find the assessments are relatively simple. I know people that got a C- with 45%.
His lectures are very organized. Explain everything clearly. His accent is not a big problem, you will get used to it quickly. Best prof!
Professeur très passionné. Explique correctement.
This class teaches his area of expertise so he is knowledgeable. The material is a good blend of classical results and some useful modern results. Homework and exams felt hard at first but became easier with experience. He speaks with a heavy French accent and puts out more typos in written material than any SFU prof I know. Otherwise, solid prof.
Dr. Chauve was trying to cover as much material as possible and sometimes, it was hard to understand the def w/out instant examples. The stuff can be a bit challenging. Definitely go to his office hours. He would answer your questions and help with your hw. Be prepared for some French accent but it's still understandable. Generally, a nice prof!!
Dr. Chauve is a caring professor. The exams were very fine and easy in comparison to lecture notes. The only problem I had was about the coding questions in assignments. I was feeling like if those questions were not helpful because most of the codes were written by professor before, and only small parts required to complete. Thank you Dr.Chauve
CEDRIC IS GREAT! if you pay attention to the questions in class and watch all the prelectures youll be fine. Hes funny and reasonable, not sure why his score is so bad.. just make sure you pay attention and youll be good :)
lectures are so hard to understand, he is NOT good at explaining topics, his exams are really hard, avoid him at all cost, he always makes mistakes during lectures which makes you even more confused
A few years after taking this, I still remember him as a caring lecturer. When the midterms were graded, he had a long discussion with us about common errors and things that he could do better as an instructor. His lecture slides can get dense, but he listened class feedback (giving us a summary for major topics along with practice questions).
3 midterms, 1 final, as well as every week there is an online assignment and a written assignment. Attendance is not technically necessary but there are Iclicker questions so i would recommend going as it affects your grade. Exams are hard, and often mistakes made in the questions on the exams, mistakes in lectures and examples, and assignments.
I quite enjoyed his lectures, they were very helpful and informative. However, there are hard weekly assignments, three difficult midterms which most of the class did not finish, and one slightly harder final. Keep on top of your assignments and study lots. But he is very accessible and helpful outside of class. He has great TAs as well.
he can't explain anything for the life of him, his exams are very difficult, he often makes mistakes during lectures and doesn't realize till the very end, HE WILL LOWER YOUR GPA
Very hard to understand what he is explaining most of the time and examples are not great representation of whats on exams.
There was a lot of assignments and homework per week which made it a bit tedious to keep up with. Other than that Cedric would try to provide some help to deal with test anxiety and even gave some extra points on some of the midterms due to some typos. Overall, he's not too bad but was a little bit confusing at times.
His midterms were mostly fair in terms of difficulty, but the exam was harder then all 3 midterms and required a lot of theory knowledge and stuff after midterm 3. Overall he was alright, the ACW TAs helped a ton for me because he made a lot of mistakes in his lectures.
He is ok although he could have given us more practice problems during lecture to help with midterms and exams. The midterms are not that hard, time is the only factor that can affect the score. For the exams, it is pretty similar to the practice final. However, it requires a lot of stuff and knowledge from all lectures combined.
French accent and interesting cursive, beware. Overall a decent prof, confusing at times but you can tell he tried. Tough questions on exams were made bonus marks if very little were able to get it right. If you do the assignments properly, you'll be fine.
Not sure why he has such a low rating. He had 3midterms and 1final, which might sound like a lot but it was actually pre easy since we only had to focus on certain sections at a time. He does have a lot of homework each week, but I found it rlly helpful, esp since his lectures were unclear most of the time. Overall pre easy esp if u took calc in hs
I was expecting to struggle a lot in this class since I didn't take calc in highschool but it didn't have a big impact (although I definitely recommend taking it or at least have a friend who did to help you along the way). The french accent didn't affect his lectures whatsoever in my opinion and the TA's in the ACW were very helpful and patient.
3 midterms, first midterm was a confidence boost, the other ones and the final were not easy, written assignments are more similar to exam question ,lectures can be confusing, however he responds to emails quickly and turned the questions that most people got wrong on the midterm to bonus questions.
Chauve is a funny and thorough professor. His accent is not hard to understand. If you watch your video lectures and take notes during lectures, you'll do very well in the class. Test questions are not hard; they are exactly like his notes and the written assignments. He grades tests tough, so be careful with small errors.
His accent is very difficult to understand as well as his handwriting. The midterms were so time limited that many students could not finish all the questions. He made mistakes in the lectures, midterms, and the final exam. Although he doesn't say anything disrespectful, his tone seems like he hates his students. Worst professor at SFU. AVOID!!!!!
I wouldn't recommend taking class with this prof. Heavy accent but can get used to it. Makes mistakes almost every lecture and runs out of time while confusing himself and others. Typos on almost all assignments and exams (3 midterms + final). Made questions most failed on exams a bonus marks though. Can tell he cares but also easily annoyed.
Okay so despite the terrible grade I will say it's mostly my fault. If you study ahead you'll do fine, his tests are pretty fair. Lectures though are super boring and his accent made understanding him at some points quite difficult. There's also a good chunk of assignments that can help boost your grade and is what probably helped me pass.
